Core Glossary
Romans — Core Glossary (Afar Language Package · Baseline v1.0)
TRI Phase 1 · Step 1 — Destination Language: Afar (Qafar af)
This glossary is the permanent baseline Translation Memory for Afar Romans/Pauline curricula. Every rendering below was chosen deliberately in 07_semantic_analysis.md and MUST be reused, unchanged, in all subsequent Afar Language Packages referencing these terms. Where a term is marked [NEOLOGISM], it is a provisional, documented coinage pending mother-tongue-translator (MTT) consultant validation — it is not to be silently altered without a recorded revision decision.
Risk Tier Legend
- Critical — direct collision with core Islamic doctrine or a doctrinally load-bearing concept entirely absent from the receptor theological system; requires mandatory catechetical framing beyond lexical choice.
- High — significant conceptual mismatch requiring deliberate clarification/glossing.
- Medium — partial overlap with existing religious concepts; usable with footnoting.
- Low — good lexical/conceptual fit; standard rendering.
Script & Register Baseline
- Script: Latin-based Qafar orthography.
- Register: formal literary Afar (elevated oratorical register), not colloquial speech.
- Loanword policy: Arabic-Islamic loanwords retained only where (a) no viable native alternative exists and (b) the term functions as a necessary “bridge word”; otherwise a lower-collision alternative is deliberately selected and documented (see Qaanuun, Farmoyta).
Master Term Table
| # | English Term | Greek (Translit.) | Afar Rendering | Risk | Doctrine(s) | Chapters | Rationale / Collision Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | God | Θεός (Theos) | Yalla | Critical (baseline, unavoidable) | All | 1–16 | Universal Afar term for God, cognate with Allah; no alternative exists. Risk lies in predications made of Yalla (Trinity, Sonship), not the noun itself. |
| 2 | Lord (of Christ) | Κύριος (Kyrios) | Rabbi / Rabbina (“our Lord”) | Critical | Union with Christ; Gospel as Power of God | 1, 4, 5, 8, 10, 14 | Asserts Christ’s co-equal divine lordship using the exact Islamic title for Allah’s unique Lordship (Rabb al-ʿĀlamīn). Highest-frequency collision term in the book. |
| 3 | Jesus | Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous) | Yesu (NOT Ciise/Qiisa) | Critical | Union with Christ; Gospel | 1–16 | Deliberately distinct from the Qur’anic name for the non-divine, non-crucified prophet-figure, to prevent silent referent-conflation. |
| 4 | Christ / Messiah | Χριστός (Christos) | Almasiixa | Medium | Union with Christ | 1–16 | Shared Qur’anic title (al-Masīḥ); bridge word requiring theological expansion (divinity, atonement) not present in Islamic usage. |
| 5 | Son of God | υἱός Θεοῦ (huios Theou) | Yallih Baxa | Critical | Union with Christ; Gospel | 1, 5, 8, 9 | Direct collision with Qur’an 112:3 (“He neither begets nor is begotten”); requires mandatory covenantal/messianic (not biological) framing at every occurrence. |
| 6 | God our Father | Θεὸς πατήρ (Theos patēr) | Ni Aabbaay Yalla | Critical | Union with Christ; Sanctification | 1, 8 | Familial/relational fatherhood-of-God language extends the Sonship collision to believers’ adoptive status. |
| 7 | Holy Spirit | Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον (Pneuma Hagion) | Ruux Qulqulluu | Critical | Sanctification and Life in the Spirit | 1, 5, 8, 9, 14, 15 | Mainstream Islamic exegesis (Qur’an 16:102) identifies “Holy Spirit” with the angel Gabriel, not a co-equal divine Person; standing chapter-wide risk in ch.8. |
| 8 | Gospel / Good News | εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion) | Injiil | Critical | Gospel as Power of God for Salvation | 1, 2, 10, 11, 15, 16 | Islamic doctrine holds the true Injil was lost/corrupted; the NT text will be challenged as inauthentic. No viable substitute term exists. |
| 9 | Apostle | ἀπόστολος (apostolos) | Farmoyta (NOT Rasuul) | Critical | Gospel; Christian Living/Unity | 1, 11, 15, 16 | Rasuul is reserved for Muhammad’s unique, sealed prophetic office; using it for Paul/the Twelve implies illegitimate new post-Muhammad messengers. Permanent lexical firewall decision. |
| 10 | Servant / Slave (of Christ) | δοῦλος (doulos) | cabdi | High | Union with Christ | 1, 6 | Cabdi is the standard, positive Islamic self-designation (“servant of Allah”); applying it to Christ makes an implicit, deliberate co-lordship claim. |
| 11 | Called | κλητός (klētos) | seecime | Low | Election | 1, 8, 9 | Good lexical fit; effectual-call sense should be reinforced in teaching, not lexically marked. |
| 12 | Set apart | ἀφορίζω (aphorizō) | maqana kah yekke | Low | Gospel | 1 | Clean fit; vocational consecration sense. |
| 13 | Holy / Saints | ἅγιος (hagios) | qulqulluu | Medium | Sanctification; Christian Living | 1, 6, 12, 15, 16 | Partial overlap with Islamic awliyāʾ (saints recognized by merit); Paul’s sense is a declared status from calling, prior to merit — reverse direction of causation. |
| 14 | Prophets | προφήτης (prophētēs) | nabii | Medium | Gospel; Law | 1, 3, 9, 11, 16 | Shared Qur’anic term with a fixed, closed prophetology culminating in Muhammad; must not imply Jesus is merely “a prophet” in that closed sense. |
| 15 | Holy Scriptures | γραφαὶ ἅγιαι (graphai hagiai) | Qulqulluu Kitaabih Cutuk | Medium | Gospel | 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16 | Kitaab shared with Islamic “Book” category; plural/textured Christian OT canon needs clarification vs. singular Islamic “the Book” concept. |
| 16 | Flesh (literal/physical) | σάρξ (sarx) — bodily sense | buxa | Medium | Union with Christ | 1, 4 | Must be disambiguated from the moral/sinful-nature sense (see #17); Afar lacks one word covering both Pauline senses. |
| 17 | Flesh (sinful nature) | σάρξ (sarx) — moral sense | buxa (contextually marked) | High | Sanctification; Original Sin | 6, 7, 8, 13 | Same lexeme as #16 but opposite theological register; translators must add periphrastic markers to prevent conflation across contexts. |
| 18 | Faith / Believe | πίστις / πιστεύω (pistis / pisteuō) | Iimaan / aamane | Critical | Justification; Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone | 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14 | Islamic īmān is creedal, propositional assent (six pillars); Pauline pistis is relational, self-entrusting trust that alone secures imputed righteousness. Highest-frequency doctrinal risk term in the letter. |
| 19 | Obedience of faith | ὑπακοὴ πίστεως (hypakoē pisteōs) | iimaanuh cangocinni | High | Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone | 1, 16 | Risk of being heard as “deeds required to validate faith” (works-inclusive) rather than faith’s inherently submissive nature. |
| 20 | Grace | χάρις (charis) | Ni’ma | High | Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone | 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 15, 16 | Islamic niʿmah is a favor compatible with, even responsive to, human merit/gratitude; Pauline grace is unmerited and prior to merit, overturning a wage framework. |
| 21 | Peace | εἰρήνη (eirēnē) | Salaan | Medium | Justification; Union with Christ | 1, 2, 5, 8, 14, 15, 16 | Strong recognizable bridge word (cf. Islamic greeting formula) but must be filled with the specific content “peace with God through justification” (5:1), not left generic. |
| 22 | Righteousness of God | δικαιοσύνη Θεοῦ (dikaiosynē Theou) | Yallih Cadaalat | Critical | Justification by Faith | 1, 3, 4, 9, 10 | The letter’s doctrinal hinge; default reading in the receptor framework is retributive/distributive justice, the opposite of Paul’s imputed righteousness. |
| 23 | Justify / Declare righteous | δικαιόω (dikaioō) | cadaalatoysa [NEOLOGISM] | Critical | Justification by Faith | 3, 4, 5, 8 | Constructed causative verb; no existing Afar term isolates the forensic-declarative sense. Must be locked as fixed rendering across all occurrences. |
| 24 | The righteous (one) | δίκαιος (dikaios) | cadaalatoyse marih | High | Justification by Faith | 1, 3, 5 | Passive/declarative sense (“declared righteous”) must be grammatically marked to avoid an achievement/self-attainment reading. |
| 25 | Salvation | σωτηρία (sōtēria) | korkobiya | High | Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone; Gospel | 1, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 | Islamic najāh is secured through a cumulative weighing of deeds and mercy at judgment, not faith-union with a crucified-risen Redeemer. |
| 26 | Wrath of God | ὀργὴ Θεοῦ (orgē Theou) | Yallih Cadhi | Medium | Justification; Gospel | 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 12, 13 | Genuine bridge (Islam affirms divine wrath); risk limited to the Christ-propitiated resolution of wrath (Critical, see #27), not the noun itself. |
| 27 | Propitiation / Mercy seat | ἱλαστήριον (hilastērion) | dambih fira-le qabxi [candidate] | Critical | Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone | 3 | Substitutionary, wrath-satisfying atonement via the Messiah’s death has no Islamic equivalent (crucifixion denied; no vicarious atonement doctrine). |
| 28 | Blood (atoning) | αἷμα (haima) | Diraq | Medium | Grace and Salvation | 3, 5 | Partial bridge via sacrificial-blood culture (Eid); Paul’s blood is substitutionary/once-for-all, not repeated ritual offering. |
| 29 | Redemption | ἀπολύτρωσις (apolytrōsis) | Fillo | Medium | Grace and Salvation | 3, 8 | Ransom-from-captivity metaphor; reasonably transparent. |
| 30 | Boasting | καύχησις (kauchēsis) | Xaaxu | Low | Justification by Faith | 3, 4, 5 | Clean fit. |
| 31 | Reckon / Credit / Impute | λογίζομαι (logizomai) | taashe [candidate] | High | Justification by Faith | 4 | Accounting/ledger metaphor central to imputed-righteousness mechanism; must be fixed and consistently forensic, not gradualist. |
| 32 | Promise | ἐπαγγελία (epangelia) | xagni | Low | Justification; Future of Israel | 1, 4, 9, 15 | Clean fit. |
| 33 | Circumcision | περιτομή (peritomē) | guddi | High | The Law and Its Purpose | 2, 3, 4 | Live, socially significant Afar Islamic practice; Paul’s heart-circumcision argument must not be heard as devaluing the cultural rite itself. |
| 34 | Uncircumcision | ἀκροβυστία (akrobystia) | guddi-inna | High | Justification by Faith | 2, 3, 4 | Same sensitivity as #33; Abraham justified prior to the rite is a sharp, useful, but delicate argument. |
| 35 | Law | νόμος (nomos) | Qaanuun (NOT Shari’a) | Critical | The Law and Its Purpose | 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13 | Permanent lexical firewall: avoids casting Paul’s law-argument as an attack on living Sharia. Baseline decision for all future Pauline curricula. |
| 36 | Sin | ἁμαρτία (hamartia) | Dambi | High (base) / Critical (universality claim) | Original Sin and Universal Guilt; Justification | 1–8, 14 | Base word is safe and well understood; the doctrinal claim of universal, inescapable, inherited guilt (ch.5) is the collision point, not the noun. |
| 37 | Adam (federal head) | Ἀδάμ (Adam) | Aadam | Critical | Original Sin and Universal Guilt | 5 | Shared Qur’anic figure, but the federal-headship doctrine (one man’s sin imputed as guilt to all) directly contradicts Qur’an 6:164/53:38. Top-priority teaching challenge. |
| 38 | Trespass | παράπτωμα (paraptōma) | qaskoyta | Medium | Original Sin | 4, 5, 11 | Reasonable fit. |
| 39 | Reconciliation | καταλλαγή (katallagē) | anee-le gino [candidate] | High | Grace and Salvation; Union with Christ | 5, 11 | Mechanism (hostility removed via Christ’s death) foreign to a framework lacking substitutionary atonement. |
| 40 | Reign (of grace/sin) | βασιλεύω (basileuō) | koroosita | Low | Grace and Salvation | 5, 6 | Clean fit. |
| 41 | Baptism | βαπτίζω (baptizō) | cuma / Cumaay [candidate] | High | Union with Christ | 6 | Risk of assimilation to Islamic ritual purification (wuḍūʾ/ghusl) rather than union-with-Christ’s-death/resurrection symbolism. |
| 42 | Old man / old self | παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος (palaios anthrōpos) | duma-le seehadaytu | Medium | Union with Christ; Sanctification | 6 | Reasonable fit. |
| 43 | Sanctification | ἁγιασμός (hagiasmos) | qulqullimaay | Medium | Sanctification and Life in the Spirit | 6 | Must be kept distinct from justification (cadaalat) to avoid merging forensic status and moral process. |
| 44 | Slavery / Freedom | δουλεύω / ἐλευθερόω (douleuō / eleutheroō) | naqas / korkobsima | Medium | Sanctification | 6 | Reasonable fit. |
| 45 | Desire / Covetousness | ἐπιθυμία (epithymia) | hab | Low | The Law and Its Purpose | 7 | Clean fit. |
| 46 | Inner man | ἔσω ἄνθρωπος (esō anthrōpos) | addal-le seehadaytu | Low | Sanctification | 7 | Clean fit. |
| 47 | Adoption (as sons) | υἱοθεσία (huiothesia) | ilma-le hinnaay [NEOLOGISM] | Critical | Union with Christ; Election | 8, 9 | Universalizes the Sonship collision to all believers; no existing Afar adoptive-legal term (kinship is clan/blood-based). Highest-sensitivity term-cluster alongside “Son of God.” |
| 48 | Foreknow / Predestine | προγινώσκω / προορίζω (proginōskō / proorizō) | duma-yaaxige / duma-qellise | High | Election and the Sovereignty of God | 8, 9 | Partial bridge with Islamic qadar, but Paul’s sense is specifically Christ-centered, soteriological election, not generic fatalistic decree. |
| 49 | Creation (groaning) | κτίσις (ktisis) | Ginooy | Low | Sanctification; Election | 1, 8 | Genuine bridge; creation as a sign (āyah) of the Creator. |
| 50 | Election | ἐκλογή (eklogē) | doorowya | High | Election and the Sovereignty of God | 9, 11 | Explicitly excludes even foreseen merit as the basis of God’s choice — a stronger claim than generic divine decree. |
| 51 | Harden | σκληρύνω (sklērynō) | qaduusiya / gaddiisa [candidate] | Medium | Election and the Sovereignty of God | 9 | Reasonable fit. |
| 52 | Mercy | ἔλεος (eleos) | Racmat | Medium | Election; Grace and Salvation | 9, 11, 12, 15 | Strong shared vocabulary (cf. ar-Raḥmān); risk is smoothing Paul’s sharper elective framing of mercy into generalized universal mercy. |
| 53 | Vessel | σκεῦος (skeuos) | qaraf | Low | Election and the Sovereignty of God | 9 | Clean fit. |
| 54 | Remnant | ὑπόλειμμα (hypoleimma) | horkocitte | Medium | The Future of Israel | 9, 11 | Reasonable fit. |
| 55 | Israel | Ἰσραήλ (Israēl) | Israa’iil | High | The Future of Israel | 9, 10, 11 | Lexically shared and low-risk; doctrinally/geopolitically sensitive re: contemporary political conflation — must stay bounded to first-century covenantal referent. |
| 56 | Confess (Jesus is Lord) | ὁμολογέω (homologeō) | qirri iyya | Critical | Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone | 10 | Inherits Rabbi/Kyrios risk (#2): confessing “Yesu is Rabbi” uses Islam’s exclusive Allah-confession formula. |
| 57 | Call on the name of the Lord | ἐπικαλέω (epikaleō) | migaq-le seece | Critical | Gospel; Grace and Salvation | 10 | Same Rabbi/Kyrios-of-Christ risk as #56. |
| 58 | Hearing / Word of Christ | ἀκοή / ῥῆμα Χριστοῦ (akoē / rhēma Christou) | maqaane / Almasiixih qangara | Low | Gospel as the Power of God | 10 | Clean fit. |
| 59 | Wild olive / Cultivated olive | ἀγριέλαιος / καλλιέλαιος | duqna-lo zayituun / seehadayti-lo zayituun | Medium | The Future of Israel | 11 | Reasonable horticultural fit. |
| 60 | Fullness | πλήρωμα (plērōma) | duudumu / gutuk | Medium | The Future of Israel | 11, 15 | Reasonable fit. |
| 61 | Mystery | μυστήριον (mystērion) | qellitte | Medium | The Future of Israel | 11, 16 | Partial bridge with Islamic al-ghayb; must clarify the “now disclosed” nuance vs. permanently hidden knowledge. |
| 62 | All Israel (will be saved) | πᾶς Ἰσραήλ (pas Israēl) | Israa’iil inkih | Critical | The Future of Israel | 11 | Most quoted/debated verse for geopolitical speculation; requires careful scope-bounding in teaching. |
| 63 | Living sacrifice | θυσία ζῶσα (thysia zōsa) | rabciny-le qabxi | Medium | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 12 | Needs unpacking against literal ritual-sacrifice (qurbān) associations. |
| 64 | Transformed / Renewed mind | μεταμορφόω / ἀνακαίνωσις (metamorphoō / anakainōsis) | korkobsima qansarut | Low | Sanctification and Life in the Spirit | 12 | Clean fit. |
| 65 | One body (church) | σῶμα ἕν (sōma hen) | inkih budda | Low | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 12 | Deliberately distinguished from buxa (flesh, #16–17). |
| 66 | Spiritual gift(s) | χάρισμα (charisma) | Ruuxa-le Ni’ma [candidate] | High | Sanctification; Christian Living | 1, 5, 12 | No isolated existing term for Spirit-given endowments; inherits χάρις/Ni’ma risk. |
| 67 | Brotherly love | φιλαδελφία (philadelphia) | toobokoy-kacnimay | Low | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 12 | Clean fit, built on established fictive-kinship term (#68). |
| 68 | Brothers (fictive kin) | ἀδελφοί (adelphoi) | toobokoy | Medium | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 1, 12, 14, 15, 16 | Must be established as fictive spiritual kinship, distinct from literal clan-based Afar kinship categories. |
| 69 | Governing authority | ἐξουσία (exousia) | Rukkib / Cangoyta | Medium | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 13 | Needs framing distinct from Islamic-governance authority ideals. |
| 70 | Love fulfills the Law | ἀγάπη…νόμου πλήρωμα (agapē…nomou plērōma) | kacnimay Qaanuun gutta | High | The Law and Its Purpose | 13 | Inherits Qaanuun-completion sensitivity (#35). |
| 71 | Judge (another believer) | κρίνω (krinō) | xukunta | Low | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 2, 14 | Clean fit. |
| 72 | Food (disputable) | βρῶμα (brōma) | maaqo | Medium | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 14 | Sensitive re: halal/haram identity markers; frame as intra-church charity, not halal commentary. |
| 73 | Kingdom of God | βασιλεία Θεοῦ (basileia Theou) | Yallih Ummattaay [candidate] | Medium | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 14 | Reasonable fit; content (righteousness/peace/joy) needs unpacking. |
| 74 | Stumbling block | σκάνδαλον (skandalon) | qaskiisa-le gexo | Low | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 14, 16 | Clean fit. |
| 75 | Minister / Service | λειτουργός / διακονία (leitourgos / diakonia) | xidma-le farmoyta / xidma | Medium | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 15 | Avoid priestly-office overtones that would elevate Paul prophet-like; reuses Farmoyta caution (#9). |
| 76 | Deacon/servant (Phoebe) | διάκονος (diakonos) | xidmi-le | Medium | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 16 | Term low-risk; social referent (named female minister) is a contextual-sensitivity flag for teaching. |
| 77 | Fellow worker | συνεργός (synergos) | xagla-le toobokoy | Low | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 16 | Clean fit. |
| 78 | Greet | ἀσπάζομαι (aspazomai) | salaan-cabbisa | Low | Christian Living and Unity in the Church | 16 | Reuses Salaan bridge (#21). |
| 79 | Glory (doxology) | δόξα (doxa) | Suge | Low | Gospel as the Power of God | 1, 8, 9, 11, 15, 16 | Clean fit for closing doxology usage. |

| 81 | Serve (cultic worship) | λατρεύω (latreuō) | qiibaadaysa | Medium | Gospel; Sanctification | 1, 12 | Reuses Islamic ʿibādah (worship exclusive to Allah) — safe when directed to God the Father via Christ’s ministry; must never imply a second object of worship without careful framing. |
| 82 | Nations / Gentiles | ἔθνη (ethnē) | ummattaa | Medium | Gospel as the Power of God | 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16 | Cognate with Islamic ummah; must not be confused with claims about a “Christian Ummah.” |
| 83 | Power of God | δύναμις Θεοῦ (dynamis Theou) | Yallih Duudda | Low (lexical) / High (doctrinal claim) | Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation | 1 | Term is safe; the claim that a proclaimed message is operative divine power for salvation is conceptually novel against a deeds-weighed framework. |
| 84 | Jew / Greek | Ἰουδαῖος / Ἕλλην (Ioudaios / Hellēn) | Yahuud / Giriig | Low | Gospel; The Future of Israel | 1, 2, 3, 9, 10 | Neutral, recognized ethnonyms regionally. |

Jesus
Approved rendering: Yesu
Transliteration: Iēsous
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: Ciise/Qiisa rejected — regional Qur’anic form denoting a non-divine, non-crucified prophet-figure

Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruux Qulqulluu
Transliteration: Pneuma Hagion / pneuma hagiōsynēs
Doctrine: Sanctification and Life in the Spirit
Mainstream Sunni exegesis (Qur’an 16:102) identifies ‘Holy Spirit’ with the angel Gabriel, not a co-equal divine Person. Standing chapter-wide risk in Romans 8. Inherited from Romans package.
Gospel Good News
Approved rendering: Injiil
Transliteration: euangelion / euangelizomai
Doctrine: The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: no viable substitute term exists in the region
Islamic doctrine holds the original Injil was lost/corrupted; must be paired with textual-integrity catechesis (cf. Rom 1:2). Inherited from Romans package.
Apostle
Approved rendering: Farmoyta
Transliteration: apostolos
Doctrine: The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation; Christian Living and Unity in the Church
Rejected alternatives: Rasuul rejected — reserved for Muhammad’s sealed prophetic office; permanent lexical firewall

Faith Believe
Approved rendering: Iimaan / aamane
Transliteration: pistis / pisteuō
Doctrine: Justification by Faith; Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone
Islamic iman/amana denotes creedal, propositional assent to six pillars; Pauline pistis is relational, self-entrusting trust. Highest-frequency doctrinal risk term in the letter. Inherited from Romans package.
Righteousness Of God
Approved rendering: Yallih Cadaalat
Transliteration: dikaiosynē Theou
Doctrine: Justification by Faith

Justify Declare Righteous
Approved rendering: cadaalatoysa
Transliteration: dikaioō
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: gradualist ‘becoming good over time’ verb rejected — collapses the forensic-declarative sense into a merit-process

Approved rendering: Qaanuun
Transliteration: nomos
Doctrine: The Law and Its Purpose
Rejected alternatives: Shari’a rejected — permanent lexical firewall; would cast Paul’s law-argument as anti-Sharia polemic

Approved rendering: Aadam
Transliteration: Adam
Doctrine: Original Sin and Universal Guilt
Shared Qur’anic figure, but federal-headship guilt-imputation directly contradicts Qur’an 6:164/53:38. Top-priority teaching challenge for this book. Inherited from Romans package.
Adoption As Sons
Approved rendering: ilma-le hinnaay
Transliteration: huiothesia
Doctrine: Union with Christ; Election and the Sovereignty of God
[NEOLOGISM, pending validation] Afar kinship is clan/blood-based; no existing adoptive-legal term. Universalizes the Son-of-God/Father collision to all believers. Inherited from Romans package.
Confess Jesus Is Lord
Approved rendering: qirri iyya
Transliteration: homologeō
Doctrine: Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone
Inherits the Rabbi/Kyrios risk: confessing ‘Yesu is Rabbi’ uses Islam’s exclusive Allah-confession formula. Inherited from Romans package.
Call On Name Of Lord
Approved rendering: migaq-le seece
Transliteration: epikaleō
Doctrine: The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation; Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone
Same Rabbi/Kyrios-of-Christ risk as confess_jesus_is_lord. Inherited from Romans package.
All Israel
Approved rendering: Israa’iil inkih
Transliteration: pas Israēl
Doctrine: The Future of Israel
Most quoted/debated verse for geopolitical speculation about Israel; requires careful scope-bounding in teaching. Inherited from Romans package.
Resurrection Of The Dead
Approved rendering: rabuk sooliya
Transliteration: anastasis nekrōn
Doctrine: Union with Christ; Justification by Faith; The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation
Qur’an 4:157 denies Jesus was crucified or killed; resurrection is categorically impossible in the dominant framework absent a death. Foundational, recurring collision (1:4; 4:24-25; 6:4-9; 8:11,34; 10:9). Inherited from Romans package.
High Risk Terms
Servant Slave Of Christ
Approved rendering: cabdi
Transliteration: doulos
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Standard positive Islamic self-designation (‘abd Allah’); applying it to Christ makes a deliberate co-lordship claim. Must never appear referentially bare (always ‘Almasiixih cabdi’). Inherited from Romans package.
Flesh Sinful Nature
Approved rendering: buxa (contextually marked)
Transliteration: sarx (moral sense)
Doctrine: Sanctification and Life in the Spirit; Original Sin and Universal Guilt
Same lexeme as flesh_literal but opposite theological register; requires periphrastic markers to prevent conflation across contexts (ch. 6-8, 13). Inherited from Romans package.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: iimaanuh cangocinni
Transliteration: hypakoē pisteōs
Doctrine: Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone
Risk of being heard as ‘deeds required for [Islamic-style] faith’ rather than faith’s inherently submissive character. Inherited from Romans package.
Grace
Approved rendering: Ni’ma
Transliteration: charis
Doctrine: Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone
Islamic ni’mah is a merit-responsive favor; Pauline charis is unmerited and prior to merit. Requires consistent doctrinal reinforcement (obligatory modifier: ‘ma-xiqinnah geytime’ — received without being earned). Inherited from Romans package.
The Righteous One
Approved rendering: cadaalatoyse marih
Transliteration: dikaios
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Passive/declarative sense (‘declared righteous’, not ‘righteous by conduct’) must be grammatically marked. Inherited from Romans package.
Salvation
Approved rendering: korkobiya
Transliteration: sōtēria
Doctrine: Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone; The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: najah (Islamic deliverance-from-Hellfire via deeds-weighing) rejected as functional equivalent — differing mechanism
Islamic soteriology secures deliverance through a cumulative weighing of deeds and mercy at judgment, not faith-union with a crucified-risen Redeemer. Inherited from Romans package.
Reckon Credit Impute
Approved rendering: taashe
Transliteration: logizomai
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: ordinary verb of ‘becoming’ rejected — implies gradual moral change rather than forensic accounting
[Candidate, pending validation of best existing Afar commercial/ledger term] Central mechanism-word for imputed righteousness. Inherited from Romans package.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: guddi
Transliteration: peritomē
Doctrine: The Law and Its Purpose
Live, socially significant Afar Islamic practice; Paul’s heart-circumcision argument must not be heard as dismissing the cultural rite itself. Inherited from Romans package.
Uncircumcision
Approved rendering: guddi-inna
Transliteration: akrobystia
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Abraham justified prior to the rite is a sharp, useful, but delicate argument for hearers whose culture ties religious legitimacy to circumcision status. Inherited from Romans package.
Sin
Approved rendering: Dambi
Transliteration: hamartia
Doctrine: Original Sin and Universal Guilt; Justification by Faith
Base word safe and well understood (High as base term); escalates to Critical wherever Paul’s totalizing universal/inherited-guilt claims are made explicit (ch. 5). Inherited from Romans package.
Reconciliation
Approved rendering: anee-le gino
Transliteration: katallagē
Doctrine: Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone; Union with Christ
[Candidate compound, pending validation] Mechanism (hostility removed via a mediator’s death) foreign to a framework lacking substitutionary atonement. Inherited from Romans package.
Baptism
Approved rendering: cuma / Cumaay
Transliteration: baptizō
Doctrine: Union with Christ
[Candidate term, pending confirmation of existing regional Christian usage] Risk of assimilation to Islamic ritual purification (wudu/ghusl) rather than union-with-Christ’s-death/resurrection. Inherited from Romans package.
Foreknow Predestine
Approved rendering: duma-yaaxige / duma-qellise
Transliteration: proginōskō / proorizō
Doctrine: Election and the Sovereignty of God
Partial bridge with Islamic qadar; Paul’s sense is specifically Christ-centered, soteriological election, not generic decree. Inherited from Romans package.
Election
Approved rendering: doorowya
Transliteration: eklogē
Doctrine: Election and the Sovereignty of God
Paul explicitly excludes even foreseen merit as the basis of God’s choice (9:11-12) — sharper than generic divine decree. Inherited from Romans package.
Israel
Approved rendering: Israa’iil
Transliteration: Israēl
Doctrine: The Future of Israel
Lexically low-risk (shared Bani Isra’il) but geopolitically high-risk; must stay bounded to the first-century covenantal referent, not the modern State of Israel. Inherited from Romans package.
Spiritual Gift
Approved rendering: Ruuxa-le Ni’ma
Transliteration: charisma / charisma pneumatikon
Doctrine: Sanctification and Life in the Spirit; Christian Living and Unity in the Church
[NEOLOGISM, pending validation] No existing Afar term isolates a Spirit-given individual endowment for communal benefit; inherits Ni’ma risk. Inherited from Romans package.
Love Fulfills The Law
Approved rendering: kacnimay Qaanuun gutta
Transliteration: agapē…nomou plērōma
Doctrine: The Law and Its Purpose
Inherits Qaanuun-completion sensitivity; brushes against Sharia-completion sensitivities. Inherited from Romans package.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Yallih Duudda
Transliteration: dynamis Theou
Doctrine: The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation
Term itself is safe; the claim that a proclaimed message IS operative divine power is doctrinally novel against a deeds-weighed soteriological backdrop. Inherited from Romans package.
Medium Risk Terms
Christ Messiah
Approved rendering: Almasiixa
Transliteration: Christos
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Shared Qur’anic title (al-Masih) for the same figure; bridge word requiring theological expansion (divinity, atonement), not avoidance. Inherited from Romans package.
Holy Saints
Approved rendering: qulqulluu
Transliteration: hagios
Doctrine: Sanctification and Life in the Spirit; Christian Living and Unity in the Church
Partial overlap with Islamic awliya’ (merit-earned sainthood); Paul’s sense runs the opposite direction — status prior to merit. Inherited from Romans package.
Prophets
Approved rendering: nabii
Transliteration: prophētēs
Doctrine: The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation; The Law and Its Purpose
Shared Qur’anic term with a fixed, closed prophetology culminating in Muhammad; must not imply Jesus is merely ‘a prophet’ in that closed sense. Inherited from Romans package.
Holy Scriptures
Approved rendering: Qulqulluu Kitaabih Cutuk
Transliteration: graphai hagiai
Doctrine: The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation
‘Kitaab’ shared with Islamic ‘the Book’ concept; plural, textured Christian OT canon needs clarification. Inherited from Romans package.
Flesh Literal
Approved rendering: buxa
Transliteration: sarx (bodily sense)
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Must be disambiguated from the moral/sinful-nature sense (see flesh_sinful_nature); one lexeme covers two Pauline senses. Inherited from Romans package.
Peace
Approved rendering: Salaan
Transliteration: eirēnē
Doctrine: Justification by Faith; Union with Christ
Strong recognizable bridge word (Islamic greeting formula); must be filled with the specific content ‘peace with God through justification’ (Rom 5:1). Inherited from Romans package.
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: Yallih Cadhi
Transliteration: orgē Theou
Doctrine: Justification by Faith; The Gospel as the Power of God for Salvation
Genuine bridge (Islam affirms divine wrath); risk limited to Christ’s propitiated resolution of wrath, not the noun itself. Inherited from Romans package.
Blood Atoning
Approved rendering: Diraq
Transliteration: haima
Doctrine: Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone
Partial bridge via sacrificial-blood culture (Eid/qurban); Paul’s blood is substitutionary and once-for-all, not repeated ritual offering. Inherited from Romans package.

Doctrine: Grace and Salvation by Faith Alone
Ransom-from-captivity metaphor is reasonably transparent. Inherited from Romans package.

Slavery Freedom
Approved rendering: naqas / korkobsima
Transliteration: douleuō / eleutheroō
Doctrine: Sanctification and Life in the Spirit
Reasonable fit; teach that biblical ‘freedom’ is freedom for righteous service, not autonomy. Inherited from Romans package.

Deacon Servant Phoebe
