Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — Revelation (Full Book)

Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Matrix, English Destination Language

This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 for the Revelation curriculum. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: every doctrine name, risk tier, and review-routing decision below reproduces that registry exactly. This document adds the chapter-by-chapter and section-by-section mapping the registry does not itself provide, so that full-book coverage (PRD mandate) is demonstrable chapter by chapter, first to last, with the core passage (Revelation 21:1-8) as theological anchor rather than scope boundary.

Risk tiers (definitions reproduced from the registry; do not vary from these):

  • Critical — dominant competing meaning or serious live denominational/interfaith disagreement; human theologian review required for every occurrence.
  • High — significant secular dilution, genre-drift, cultural erosion, or denominational disagreement; human theologian review required.
  • Medium — some competing usage or interpretive range, unlikely to be actively misunderstood with context; native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — minor or negligible risk; automated review sufficient.

All 33 doctrines from the registry are represented at least once below. Where a doctrine recurs across multiple chapters, it is listed at each point of substantive re-engagement rather than only at its first occurrence, consistent with the PRD’s “every chapter… noted explicitly as reviewed” mandate.

Chapter 1 — Prologue and Vision of the Risen Christ

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Sovereignty of God over History1:8Critical”Almighty” risks a vague-superlative secular reading (“the almighty dollar”); “who is, who was, and who is to come” risks narrowing to a future-only statement, losing its Exodus 3:14 self-existence echo.Human theologian
The Return and Reign of Christ1:7, 1:13Critical”Coming with the clouds” and Son of Man imagery require Danielic background not assumed known; ties forward to 22:7,12,20 imminence language.Human theologian
Deity and Titles of Christ1:8, 1:13, 1:17-18CriticalShared “Alpha and Omega” title (God, 1:8; Christ, 22:13) is load-bearing for full deity and easily missed if occurrences are not cross-referenced.Human theologian
The Church as God’s People, Specific and Universal1:4, 1:11, 1:20HighSeven named churches must be held as both real first-century congregations and representative of the whole church, without collapsing into either extreme.Human theologian
Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution1:9Critical”Tribulation” language begins here; John’s own suffering (“companion in the suffering… on the island of Patmos”) anchors the doctrine autobiographically.Human theologian
Inspiration and Prophetic Authority of Scripture1:1-3HighOpening “signified” (sēmainō) is the book’s own built-in instruction to read symbolically; frequently flattened in translation to plain disclosure language.Human theologian
Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation1:1, 1:3High”Apocalypse/revelation” in the title itself is the book’s single largest genre-drift risk: modern “apocalyptic” means cataclysm, nearly inverting the word’s actual sense of unveiling.Human theologian
The Intermediate State and Hades1:18High”Keys of death and Hades” introduces a term routinely conflated with “Hell” outright; the book’s own later distinction (20:13-14) must be anticipated here.Human theologian

Chapter 1 status: Reviewed in full; contributes eight doctrine touchpoints, none omitted.

Chapters 2-3 — Letters to the Seven Churches

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Repentance and the Call to the Seven Churches2:1-3:22 (all seven letters)High”Repent” is trivialized by cartoonish street-preacher caricature; must be restored to full moral-relational reorientation.Human theologian
The Church as God’s People, Specific and Universal2:1-3:22HighEach church is simultaneously a particular, named congregation with specific named sins/virtues and a representative instance of the whole church; both referents must be held together.Human theologian
Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution2:2-3, 2:10, 2:13, 2:19, 3:10-11CriticalModern “resilience/grit” self-help vocabulary strips out the Christ-directed, persecution-context character of hypomonē.Human theologian
Historic-Misuse Caution: “Synagogue of Satan”2:9, 3:9CriticalDocumented history of anti-Jewish weaponization; must be stated explicitly as a localized first-century conflict in Smyrna/Philadelphia, not a claim about Jewish people or Judaism generally.Human theologian
Deity and Titles of Christ2:28 (morning star, first occurrence); 3:14 (“the Amen”)Critical”Morning star” here is positive (Christ); popularly (mis)associated via KJV Isaiah 14:12 tradition with a name for Satan — flagged here to prevent confusion before its recurrence at 22:16. “The Amen” is unlikely to be recognized as a personal title without explicit flagging.Human theologian
The Lukewarm Faith Warning3:14-16LowRare positive case: “lukewarm” is now a stable English idiom directly derived from this passage and generally reinforces the biblical sense; confirm readers know its biblical source.Automated review
The Tree of Life and Restored Eden2:7MediumFirst of several occurrences (cf. 22:2,14,19); establish the Genesis-to-Revelation storyline early to anchor later, more secularized appearances of this image.Native speaker review

Chapters 2-3 status: Reviewed in full across all seven letters; seven doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapters 4-5 — The Heavenly Throne Room and the Lamb

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Angelic Worship and Creation’s Praise4:1-5:14MediumOT-background imagery (four living creatures, twenty-four elders, drawn from Ezekiel 1 and Isaiah 6) is largely unfamiliar without supplied background; minor denominational variation on the elders’ identity should be noted as a range of views.Native speaker review
Worship of the Lamb4:8-11, 5:6-14Critical”Worship” risks trivialization by secular hyperbole (“worship the ground she walks on”); “Lamb” risks sentimentalized Easter-card cuteness that erases the conquering-sovereign paradox of 5:5-6.Human theologian
The Sovereignty of God over History4:1-11 (throne imagery)CriticalFantasy-genre “contested throne” entertainment culture risks framing God’s throne as one prize among rivals rather than settled, uncontested sovereignty.Human theologian
The New Song and Redemption Accomplished5:9-10LowStable, positive worship image responding to accomplished redemption; minimal competing secular meaning beyond generic musical usage of “a new song.”Automated review
Deity and Titles of Christ5:6-14 (Lamb enthroned and worshiped alongside God)CriticalThe Lamb’s reception of the same worship due to God (5:13-14) is the passage’s central Christological claim; requires explicit, not passive, treatment.Human theologian

Chapters 4-5 status: Reviewed in full; five doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 6 — The Six Seals

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints6:1-17 (four horsemen, sixth seal)CriticalDisaster-film/horror-genre imagery risks flattened literalism about the “four horsemen” as free-floating pop-culture icons divorced from the judgment argument they serve.Human theologian
The Prayers of the Saints and Divine Justice6:9-11MediumThe martyrs’ cry “How long, Sovereign Lord…?” risks being misread as an un-Christian desire for revenge rather than a legitimate cry for justice with a real causal link to unfolding judgment.Native speaker review
Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution6:9-11 (martyrs under the altar)CriticalFirst explicit martyrdom scene; establishes the witness-unto-death connection developed further at 12:11 and 20:4.Human theologian

Chapter 6 status: Reviewed in full; three doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 7 — The 144,000 Sealed and the Great Multitude

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Sealed Saints and the Mark of the Beast Contrast7:3-8MediumThis positive seal of ownership is the text’s own deliberate counterpart to the beast’s mark (13:16-17); set up explicitly here so the later contrast is recognized, not encountered as an unconnected new idea.Native speaker review
Mission and Universal Worship of All Nations7:9-10MediumRedeemed international multitude reinforces the baseline caution that “Gentiles/nations” should not be misread as “non-believers.”Native speaker review
Worship of the Lamb7:9-12CriticalSecond major throne-room worship scene; reinforces exclusivity of worship directed to God and the Lamb together.Human theologian

Chapter 7 status: Reviewed in full; three doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapters 8-9 — The Seven Trumpets

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints8:6-9:21 (trumpet judgments)CriticalEscalating plague imagery invites flattened-literalist reading (as a checklist of predicted modern events) as readily as dismissive “just symbolic” reading; both distort the text’s “symbolic but real” mode.Human theologian
Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation9:1-11 (the abyss, locust-army imagery)HighConcrete apocalyptic geography (“the abyss”) risks being absorbed into vaguer secular metaphorical/poetic “abyss” (existential dread) language.Human theologian
The Prayers of the Saints and Divine Justice8:3-4MediumIncense/prayer imagery preceding trumpet judgments reinforces the causal link between the saints’ prayers and God’s acts of judgment established at 6:9-11.Native speaker review

Chapters 8-9 status: Reviewed in full; three doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 10 — The Angel and the Scroll

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation10:7 (“the mystery of God”)High”Mystery” invites a detective-fiction/code-breaking secular framing that encourages a puzzle-solving posture rather than the text’s own proclamation-and-worship posture.Human theologian
Inspiration and Prophetic Authority of Scripture10:7, 10:11HighJohn’s re-commissioning to prophesy reinforces the book’s claim to genuine prophetic authority, not merely literary vision.Human theologian

Chapter 10 status: Reviewed in full; two doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 11 — The Two Witnesses and the Seventh Trumpet

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Two Witnesses and Prophetic Testimony11:1-13MediumSubstantial interpretive range on the witnesses’ identity (future literal pair; Elijah/Moses typology; symbol of the church’s corporate witness) should be presented transparently as an instance of the book’s symbolic-but-real methodology, not resolved silently.Native speaker review
Temple and Ark of the Covenant Imagery11:1-2, 11:19MediumLive interpretive/denominational debate over a future literal rebuilt temple versus the church-as-temple reading; flag as a range of views.Native speaker review
The Sovereignty of God over History11:15-17Critical”The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord” is a thesis-level sovereignty claim; must not be diluted to a future-only hope divorced from present reign.Human theologian
The Return and Reign of Christ11:15Critical”He will reign for ever and ever” ties directly into the millennium debate resolved (or not) at chapter 20.Human theologian

Chapter 11 status: Reviewed in full; four doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil12:7-11High”They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb” is the book’s clearest statement that victory is Christ-accomplished, not self-generated; self-help “overcomer” branding risks recasting this as personal willpower.Human theologian
The Sovereignty of God over History12:1-17 (cosmic conflict narrated as already under God’s control)CriticalFantasy-genre “dragon” imagery risks fictionalizing what the text names as a real spiritual enemy explicitly identified with Satan (12:9).Human theologian

Chapter 12 status: Reviewed in full; two doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 13 — The Beast and the Mark

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Beast, Its Mark, and Its Number13:1-18CriticalConspiracy culture attaches specific, live, socially consequential literal identifications (microchips, QR codes, vaccination-related theories) well beyond a responsible first-century economic-exclusion reading; the popular label “the Antichrist” never actually occurs in this text and must be corrected explicitly.Human theologian
Sealed Saints and the Mark of the Beast Contrast13:16-17MediumDirect dark counterpart to the positive seal of 7:3-8 and 14:1; the contrast should be made explicit at this point.Native speaker review
Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints13:1-18CriticalThe beast’s rise is itself under divine permission, not a rival sovereignty; this must be stated to avoid a dualistic misreading.Human theologian

Chapter 13 status: Reviewed in full; three doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 14 — The 144,000, the Harvest, and the Eternal Gospel

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Sealed Saints and the Mark of the Beast Contrast14:1MediumThe Lamb’s seal on the 144,000’s foreheads completes the contrast with 13:16-17’s mark.Native speaker review
Babylon and the Fall of Worldly Power14:8 (first mention of “Babylon the great”)HighFirst occurrence; establishes the “any anti-God empire, across history” symbolic reading before the term is developed further in chapters 17-18.Human theologian
The Beast, Its Mark, and Its Number14:9-11CriticalRepeats the mark-of-the-beast warning in explicit connection with worship of the beast’s image; reinforces the worship/mark antithesis.Human theologian
The New Song and Redemption Accomplished14:3LowContinues the stable “new song” worship image from 5:9-10.Automated review

Chapter 14 status: Reviewed in full; four doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 15 — The Song of Moses and the Lamb; Preparation of the Bowls

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Worship of the Lamb15:3-4 (song of Moses and the Lamb)CriticalJoining Moses’ Exodus song with the Lamb’s song ties this doctrine explicitly to the whole-canon deliverance narrative; must not be read as two unrelated hymns.Human theologian
The Sovereignty of God over History15:3-4 (“Lord God Almighty… King of the nations”)CriticalReinforces “Almighty” title against a vague-superlative secular misreading.Human theologian
Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints15:1,5-8 (preparation of the seven bowls)CriticalSets up the bowl judgments of chapter 16; no new vocabulary introduced but the doctrine’s stakes intensify here.Human theologian

Chapter 15 status: Reviewed in full. Confirmed per analysis/08_core_glossary.md Section C note: no new Section B vocabulary beyond minor extensions (“song of Moses and the Lamb,” “tabernacle of testimony”) of already-established terms; three existing doctrine touchpoints continue and intensify here, explicitly noted rather than silently omitted.

Chapter 16 — The Seven Bowls and Armageddon

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints16:1-21 (bowl judgments)CriticalEscalating plague imagery again invites flattened-literalist or dismissive “just symbolic” misreading.Human theologian
Babylon and the Fall of Worldly Power16:16 (Armageddon), 16:19High”Armageddon” is among the most secularized biblical loanwords in English, now generic “catastrophic conflict” language entirely detached from the text’s specific, debated symbolic referent.Human theologian
Repentance and the Call to the Seven Churches16:9, 16:11 (refusal to repent despite judgment)HighDemonstrates the seriousness of unrepentance as a settled disposition, not mere delayed response.Human theologian

Chapter 16 status: Reviewed in full; three doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 17 — The Great Prostitute and the Beast Explained

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Babylon and the Fall of Worldly Power17:1-18High”The great prostitute” risks being misheard, absent the Hosea/Ezekiel covenant-unfaithfulness background, as demeaning to women specifically rather than to the corrupt system it symbolizes; KJV “whore” is now vulgar in ordinary register.Human theologian
The Beast, Its Mark, and Its Number17:3, 17:7-8, 17:11-13, 17:16-17 (beast’s identity explained)CriticalThe beast/kings/heads-and-horns imagery invites specific modern-geopolitical identification speculation; must be handled with historical-critical care.Human theologian

Chapter 17 status: Reviewed in full; two doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 18 — The Fall of Babylon Lamented

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Babylon and the Fall of Worldly Power18:1-24HighContinues and elaborates the Babylon symbol introduced in ch. 14 and developed in ch. 17; contemporary pop-culture usage of “Babylon” (Rastafarian, band names, “Sin City”) both reinforces and risks narrowing the broader symbolic referent.Human theologian
The Suddenness and Certainty of Judgment18:10, 18:17, 18:19 (“in a single hour”)LowStylistic emphasis on suddenness; low risk, reinforcing rather than complicating already-established judgment vocabulary.Automated review

Chapter 18 status: Reviewed in full. Confirmed per analysis/08_core_glossary.md Section C note: no additional new Section B vocabulary beyond what was introduced in chapters 14 and 17; two doctrine touchpoints continue here, explicitly noted rather than silently omitted.

Chapter 19 — The Rider on the White Horse and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Return and Reign of Christ19:11-16CriticalThe rider’s description climaxes the book’s Christ-as-conquering-king imagery; must not be softened into a purely pastoral, non-militant image at the cost of the text’s own force.Human theologian
Deity and Titles of Christ19:13 (“the Word of God”), 19:16 (“King of kings and Lord of lords”)Critical”The Word of God” is today overwhelmingly identified with the Bible-as-book rather than recognized as a personal title for Christ; “King of kings and Lord of lords” directly extends the baseline’s Critical “Lord” risk and must carry restored, exclusive weight.Human theologian
The Church as Bride of Christ19:7-9HighWedding-industry romantic/commercial saturation flattens covenantal, corporate depth into sentimental individual romance imagery.Human theologian
Worship of the Lamb19:1-10CriticalIncludes the refused-worship scene (19:10), a built-in corrective this curriculum should exploit explicitly against worship-of-the-messenger error.Human theologian
The Beast, Its Mark, and Its Number19:19-20CriticalBeast and false prophet’s defeat and judgment; final resolution of the mark-of-the-beast conflict narrative.Human theologian

Chapter 19 status: Reviewed in full; five doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 20 — The Millennium, Gog and Magog, and the Great White Throne

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Millennial Reign20:1-10CriticalPremillennial, amillennial, and postmillennial readings are all held today by substantial, serious English-speaking Christian traditions; this is the single largest denominational fault-line the whole book introduces and must be stated transparently.Human theologian
Gog and Magog and the Final Rebellion20:7-9MediumOT background (Ezekiel 38-39) largely unfamiliar without supplied background; fringe speculative identification with specific modern nations should be flagged and cautioned against.Native speaker review
Universal Human Accountability at the Final Judgment20:11-15CriticalExtends the baseline’s Critical Universal Human Accountability doctrine into its climactic Revelation-specific staging; contemporary non-judgmental therapeutic culture resists any final, individual, universal moral accounting.Human theologian
The Intermediate State and Hades20:13-14HighThe book’s own careful distinction — Hades as a temporary intermediate state itself finally thrown into the lake of fire — must be explicitly preserved against casual conflation of “Hades” with final “Hell.”Human theologian
Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints20:11-15CriticalClimactic judgment scene; “second death,” “lake of fire,” and “book of life” all converge here and require full baseline-consistent clarification.Human theologian

Chapter 20 status: Reviewed in full; five doctrine touchpoints identified.

Chapter 21 — The New Heaven and New Earth (Core Passage, 21:1-8, and the New Jerusalem, 21:9-27)

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The New Heaven and New Earth21:1-8, 21:9-27HighContemporary marketing-driven “new” flattens the qualitatively transformed kainos sense into mere replacement-in-sequence; widespread “going to heaven when you die” lay piety obscures that the hope pictured here is earth renewed and joined to heaven.Human theologian
Covenant Fulfillment Formula21:3, 21:7High”I will be their God, and they will be my people/children” is the most purely relational, least contractual covenant language in the entire canon; risks being read as generic closeness rather than recognized covenant fulfillment.Human theologian
The Church as Bride of Christ21:2, 21:9-27HighThe Bride here is explicitly the city itself (corporate), a needed corrective to individualized-romance misreadings risked elsewhere (19:7-9).Human theologian
Universal Human Accountability at the Final Judgment21:8 (vice list)CriticalMultiple etymological false-friends within one verse: “sexually immoral” (pornoi, narrowed today to visual media) and “those who practice magic arts” (pharmakoi, now carrying a positive licensed-medical connotation) are nearly inverted from their intended sense.Human theologian
Numerology and Symbolic Numbers21:12-21HighThe architectural/numerical symbolism of the new Jerusalem faces the dual risk of hyper-literal blueprint-reading versus dismissive “merely symbolic” reading.Human theologian
Mission and Universal Worship of All Nations21:24, 21:26MediumNations bringing their glory into the city reinforces rather than complicates the “Gentiles/nations ≠ non-believers” baseline caution.Native speaker review

Chapter 21 status: Reviewed in full as the theological anchor of this curriculum; six doctrine touchpoints identified, all directly load-bearing for the core passage.

Chapter 22 — The River and Tree of Life; Epilogue

DoctrineKey Passages (Rev.)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Tree of Life and Restored Eden22:1-2, 22:14, 22:19MediumWidely secularized, syncretistic decorative/esoteric symbol (jewelry, film title, Kabbalah, Yggdrasil) dilutes the specific Genesis-to-Revelation biblical storyline.Native speaker review
The Church as Bride of Christ22:17 (“the Spirit and the Bride say, Come”)HighRisk of missing the joint Spirit-and-church missionary posture in the invitation, reducing it to a generic closing liturgical flourish.Human theologian
The Imminence of Christ’s Return22:7, 22:10, 22:12, 22:20HighTwo thousand elapsed years since “I am coming soon” generate a substantial, reasonable lay objection that must be addressed transparently rather than left unaddressed.Human theologian
Inspiration and Prophetic Authority of Scripture22:18-19HighThe warning against adding to or taking away from “this book” is popularly (over-)extended into a general claim about the closed canon of the entire Bible; should be clarified without denying the legitimate broader canonical principle theologians have drawn from it by extension.Human theologian
The Return and Reign of Christ22:20 (“Come, Lord Jesus”)CriticalClosing prayer directly invokes the restored-weight “Lord” confession established across the book.Human theologian
Deity and Titles of Christ22:13 (Alpha and Omega), 22:16 (morning star, Root of David)CriticalBoth titles recur here from their first occurrences (1:8/21:6 and 2:28), completing the deity argument; “morning star” again requires disambiguation from the popular Isaiah 14:12 “Lucifer” association.Human theologian

Chapter 22 status: Reviewed in full; six doctrine touchpoints identified, closing every thread opened across the book.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Sovereignty of God over History

English name: sovereignty of God over history
Key terms: god, almighty, alpha_and_omega, who_is_who_was_who_is_to_come, throne
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary fantasy-genre entertainment culture (violent succession dramas built around a contested ‘throne’) risks framing God’s throne as one prize among rivals rather than the settled, uncontested, eternal seat of the one true sovereign; ‘Almighty’ risks becoming a vague superlative (‘the almighty dollar’) divorced from personal, purposive rule; the divine-name formula ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come’ risks being narrowed only to a future-return statement, losing its Exodus 3:14 echo of eternal self-existence that grounds the whole book’s confidence in God’s rule over history.

The Return and Reign of Christ

English name: return and reign of Christ
Key terms: lord, king_of_kings_lord_of_lords, son_of_man, coming_soon_quickly, thousand_years_millennium
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Lord’ has nearly disappeared from ordinary spoken English outside archaic or fantasy-fiction associations (baseline Critical risk), intensified here in the doubled superlative ‘King of kings and Lord of lords’ (19:16); the promise ‘I am coming soon’ (22:7,12,20) generates a common, reasonable lay objection after two millennia that requires a stated interpretive position rather than silence; and the nature and timing of Christ’s reign is itself the single largest denominational fault-line this curriculum introduces (see the_millennial_reign).

Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution

English name: perseverance and faithful witness under persecution
Key terms: endurance_perseverance, witness_testimony, repent, crown, lukewarm, great_tribulation
Review routing: Human theologian

Modern secular ‘resilience/grit’ self-improvement culture and generic ‘patience’ language strip out the specifically Christ-directed, faith-rooted, persecution-context character of hypomonē; ‘witness’ collides with trivializing pop-psychology ‘martyr complex’ usage even as the book increasingly links witness to literal death, a connection that must be taught rather than assumed; the added denominational contest over ‘the great tribulation’ (see separate entry) intensifies the overall risk tier for this doctrine.

Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints

English name: judgment of the wicked and vindication of the saints
Key terms: second_death, lake_of_fire, great_white_throne, beast, mark_of_the_beast, hades, book_of_life
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Second death’ and ‘lake of fire’ have no competing secular meaning but carry the highest doctrinal stakes in the book and are subject to genuine, serious denominational disagreement among English-speaking Christians (eternal conscious torment vs. conditional immortality/annihilationism vs. minority universalist-leaning readings) that must be stated transparently; the archaic ‘brimstone’ idiom survives mainly in the mocking phrase ‘fire and brimstone preaching,’ risking caricature of this solemn judgment scene.

Worship of the Lamb

English name: worship of the Lamb
Key terms: lamb, worship, worthy, hallelujah
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary English ‘worship’ has drifted into loose secular hyperbole (‘worship the ground she walks on’) that trivializes exclusive submission owed to God/the Lamb alone; ‘Lamb’ itself risks sentimentalized Easter-card cuteness that erases the paradoxical conquering-sovereign dimension the text insists on (5:5-6; 6:16); the book’s own refused-worship scenes (19:10; 22:8-9) are a built-in corrective this curriculum should exploit explicitly.

Deity and Titles of Christ

English name: deity and titles of Christ
Key terms: alpha_and_omega, son_of_man, word_of_god_title, the_amen_title, morning_star, king_of_kings_lord_of_lords
Review routing: Human theologian

The shared title ‘Alpha and Omega’ applied without distinction to God (1:8; 21:6) and Christ (22:13) is a load-bearing claim of full deity easily missed if the two occurrences are treated as unrelated; ‘the Word of God’ is today overwhelmingly identified with the Bible-as-book rather than recognized as a personal title for Christ himself (19:13); ‘morning star’ (22:16) risks confusion with the popular KJV-derived association of ‘Lucifer, son of the morning’ (Isaiah 14:12) as a name for Satan, requiring explicit disambiguation.

The Millennial Reign

English name: the millennial reign
Key terms: thousand_years_millennium, first_resurrection, gog_and_magog
Review routing: Human theologian

Premillennial, amillennial, and postmillennial readings are all held today by substantial, serious English-speaking Christian traditions; this is the single largest denominational fault-line the whole book introduces, and the curriculum must state plainly which reading it presents while respectfully noting the range of other views, following the baseline’s own transparency principle used for grace/works, assurance of salvation, and sainthood.

The Beast, Its Mark, and Its Number

English name: the beast, mark, and number 666
Key terms: beast, mark_of_the_beast, number_666, false_prophet
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary conspiracy culture attaches extremely specific, live, and socially consequential literal identifications to ‘the mark’ (microchips, QR codes, vaccination-related conspiracy theories) that go well beyond and often contrary to responsible historical interpretation of a first-century economic-exclusion mechanism; the popular label ‘the Antichrist,’ which nearly all lay readers assume is this book’s own vocabulary for the beast, in fact never occurs anywhere in Revelation, a mismatch that must be corrected explicitly.

Historic-Misuse Caution: ‘Synagogue of Satan’

English name: historic-misuse caution regarding ‘synagogue of Satan’
Key terms: synagogue_of_satan
Review routing: Human theologian

This phrase has a documented history of being weaponized in anti-Jewish rhetoric across church history; it must be stated explicitly, on every substantive occurrence, that it names a specific local first-century conflict with a particular opposing group in Smyrna and Philadelphia, not a blanket theological claim about Jewish people or Judaism generally, consistent with contemporary post-Holocaust theological care around supersessionist readings.

Universal Human Accountability at the Final Judgment

English name: universal human accountability at the final judgment
Key terms: great_white_throne, book_of_life, lake_of_fire, cowardly, unbelieving, vile_detestable, murderers, sexually_immoral, sorcerers_magic_arts, idolaters, liars
Review routing: Human theologian

Extends the baseline’s Critical-tier Universal Human Accountability doctrine into this book’s climactic staging; contemporary non-judgmental therapeutic culture (‘don’t judge,’ ‘live your truth’) resists any final, individual, universal moral accounting, and marketing/casual speech has trivialized several of the specific vice-list terms; two terms in the list are genuinely striking etymological false-friends in English itself — ‘sexually immoral’ (pornoi, root of ‘pornography,’ now narrowed to visual media) and ‘those who practice magic arts’ (pharmakoi, root of ‘pharmacy,’ now carrying an entirely positive licensed-medical connotation, nearly inverted from the occult sense intended).

High Risk Doctrines

The New Heaven and New Earth

English name: the new heaven and new earth
Key terms: new_qualitative, sea_symbolic, new_jerusalem, tabernacle_dwell, covenant_formula
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary marketing-driven ‘new’ (planned obsolescence, ‘new and improved’) flattens the qualitatively transformed kainos sense into mere replacement-in-sequence, risking a read of God discarding creation rather than renewing it; widespread ‘going to heaven when you die’ lay piety obscures that the hope pictured here is earth renewed and joined to heaven, not escape from earth to a disembodied heavenly realm.

The Church as Bride of Christ

English name: the church as bride of Christ
Key terms: bride, new_jerusalem, marriage_supper_of_the_lamb, spirit_and_bride_say_come
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary Western wedding-industry culture (heavily commercialized, romance-genre saturated, individualistic ‘her big day’ framing) risks reducing this rich corporate-covenantal image to sentimental romance divorced from its Old Testament marriage-covenant background (Hosea, Ezekiel 16) and from the passive, God-initiated ‘prepared/adorned’ verbs of 21:2.

Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation

English name: symbolic and apocalyptic interpretation
Key terms: revelation_apocalypse, sign_signify, mystery_of_god, number_666, do_not_add_take_away, temple_of_god, two_witnesses
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary English ‘apocalyptic’ has drifted almost entirely toward cataclysmic destruction (disaster films, ‘zombie apocalypse’), nearly inverting the word’s actual sense of unveiling/disclosure named in the book’s own opening verb (‘signify,’ 1:1); a live subculture of code-breaking, date-setting approaches risks a puzzle-solving posture rather than the proclamation-and-worship posture the text itself models, while dismissing all symbolism as ‘merely symbolic’ equally distorts the ‘symbolic but real’ mode of communication the book requires.

Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil

English name: assurance of God’s final victory over evil
Key terms: overcome, dragon, blood_of_the_lamb, satan_devil
Review routing: Human theologian

Self-help/motivational-branding culture (‘overcomer,’ ‘conqueror’ as personal-achievement marketing) risks recasting victory as a self-generated triumph narrative, obscuring that in Revelation believers overcome explicitly ‘by the blood of the Lamb’ (12:11), not unaided willpower; fantasy-genre ‘dragon’ imagery risks fictionalizing what the text names as a real spiritual enemy explicitly identified with Satan (12:9).

Inspiration and Prophetic Authority of Scripture

English name: inspiration and prophetic authority of Scripture
Key terms: prophecy, prophet, do_not_add_take_away, witness_testimony
Review routing: Human theologian

Extends the baseline’s High-risk Inspiration of Scripture doctrine; the closing warning against adding to or taking away from ‘this book’ (22:18-19) is popularly (over-)extended into a general claim about the closed canon of the entire Bible, a common but historically imprecise application that should be clarified without denying the legitimate broader canonical principle theologians have drawn from it by extension.

The Intermediate State and Hades

English name: the intermediate state and Hades
Key terms: hades, lake_of_fire, second_death
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary English routinely conflates ‘Hades’ outright with ‘Hell’/final judgment, and casual idiom (‘hot as Hades’) drains it of technical meaning; readers also risk importing classical Greek mythological underworld-god associations from general cultural education. The book’s own careful distinction — Hades as a temporary intermediate state itself finally thrown into the lake of fire (20:14) — must be explicitly preserved.

Repentance and the Call to the Seven Churches

English name: repentance and the call to the seven churches
Key terms: repent, lukewarm, crown, church
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary secular usage confines ‘repent’ almost entirely to cartoonish sandwich-board street-preacher caricature or comedic doomsday imagery, stripping the word of the serious moral-relational reorientation the Greek intends; readers must also hold together the specific-local referent (seven real congregations with named, particular problems) and the representative-universal referent (the whole church across time) without collapsing into either extreme.

Babylon and the Fall of Worldly Power

English name: Babylon and the fall of worldly power
Key terms: babylon_the_great, great_prostitute, armageddon
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary secular/pop-culture usage of ‘Babylon’ (Rastafarian usage for oppressive state power, band and album names, casual ‘Sin City’ associations) both usefully reinforces and risks narrowing the term to one specific modern referent, obscuring the book’s own broader ‘any empire opposed to God, across history’ symbolic reading; ‘the great prostitute’ additionally risks being misheard, absent the Hosea/Ezekiel covenant-unfaithfulness background, as demeaning to women specifically rather than to the corrupt system it symbolizes.

Covenant Fulfillment Formula

English name: covenant fulfillment formula
Key terms: covenant_formula, covenant, tabernacle_dwell
Review routing: Human theologian

Reinforces the baseline’s High-risk caution that ‘covenant’ is now chiefly encountered in real-estate/contract law (‘restrictive covenants’); the core passage’s repetition of the whole-canon covenant formula (‘I will be their God, and they will be my people’) is the most purely relational, least contractual use of covenant language in the entire canon and risks being read as generic closeness rather than recognized as the climactic fulfillment of a promise God has kept since Abraham.

The Imminence of Christ’s Return

English name: the imminence of Christ’s return
Key terms: coming_soon_quickly
Review routing: Human theologian

Two thousand elapsed years since the promise ‘I am coming soon’ have generated a substantial, entirely reasonable lay objection that this curriculum must address transparently (near-term imminence expectation vs. a qualitative ‘suddenness-when-it-comes’ reading vs. an appeal to God’s differently-scaled relationship to time) rather than leaving unaddressed.

The Church as God’s People: Specific and Universal

English name: the church as God’s people, specific and universal
Key terms: church, witness_testimony
Review routing: Human theologian

Extends the baseline’s Critical ‘church’ caution (declining-institution and clergy-scandal associations in the post-Christian West) with a Revelation-specific layer: readers must hold together the specific-local referent (seven real, named, first-century congregations with particular problems) and the representative-universal referent (the whole church addressed symbolically through the number seven) without collapsing into either extreme.

Numerology and Symbolic Numbers

English name: numerology and symbolic numbers
Key terms: number_666, new_qualitative
Review routing: Human theologian

Contemporary secular culture treats ‘666’ as a free-floating generic horror/superstition symbol (horror-film titles, tattoo iconography, superstition about house numbers) almost entirely divorced from the text’s specific, historically-grounded gematria-based argument; the vivid numerical/architectural symbolism of the new Jerusalem (21:12-21) faces the opposite dual risk of hyper-literal blueprint-reading versus dismissive ‘merely symbolic’ reading, either of which loses the ‘symbolic but real’ communication the book intends.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Mission and Universal Worship of All Nations

English name: mission and universal worship of all nations
Key terms: gentiles, new_jerusalem
Review routing: Native speaker review

Supports the baseline’s ‘universal scope of the gospel’ doctrine; redeemed international pilgrimage bringing glory into the city reinforces rather than complicates the baseline’s caution about ‘Gentiles’ being a low-frequency word easily misread as ‘non-believers.‘

Angelic Worship and Creation’s Praise

English name: angelic worship and creation’s praise
Key terms: worthy, throne, lamb
Review routing: Native speaker review

The OT-background imagery (four living creatures, twenty-four elders, drawn from Ezekiel 1 and Isaiah 6) is largely unfamiliar to contemporary readers without supplied background, an obscurity rather than false-friend risk; minor denominational variation exists over the elders’ precise identity, worth noting as a range of views rather than asserted silently.

Sealed Saints and the Mark of the Beast Contrast

English name: sealed saints and the mark of the beast contrast
Key terms: mark_of_the_beast, saints
Review routing: Native speaker review

The positive seal of God’s ownership on his people (7:3-8; 14:1) is the text’s own deliberate counterpart to the beast’s mark (13:16-17); this pairing should be set up explicitly so readers recognize the contrast when they reach chapter 13 rather than encountering the mark as an unconnected new idea.

The Prayers of the Saints and Divine Justice

English name: the prayers of the saints and divine justice
Key terms: saints, the_accuser
Review routing: Native speaker review

The martyrs’ cry for vindication (‘How long, Sovereign Lord…?’) and the heavenly liturgy joining the saints’ prayers to God’s acts of judgment risk being misread either as an un-Christian desire for revenge or as an abstract liturgical detail with no causal connection to the judgments that follow; both the legitimacy of the cry and its causal link to unfolding judgment should be stated plainly.

The Tree of Life and Restored Eden

English name: the tree of life and restored Eden
Key terms: tree_of_life, covenant_formula
Review routing: Native speaker review

Contemporary secular/pop-culture usage (‘Tree of Life’ as decorative jewelry motif, a well-known film title, a Kabbalah/esoteric symbol, and the Norse Yggdrasil in fantasy media) has become a widely secularized, syncretistic generic symbol of life and interconnectedness, risking dilution of its specific placement within the Genesis-to-Revelation biblical storyline this curriculum should anchor explicitly.

Gog and Magog and the Final Rebellion

English name: Gog and Magog and the final rebellion
Key terms: gog_and_magog, dragon
Review routing: Native speaker review

These OT symbolic names (Ezekiel 38-39) are largely unfamiliar without supplied background; a fringe contemporary tendency in some popular prophecy-conference and internet culture to identify Gog/Magog speculatively with specific present-day nations should be flagged and cautioned against, not encouraged.

The Two Witnesses and Prophetic Testimony

English name: the two witnesses and prophetic testimony
Key terms: two_witnesses, witness_testimony, temple_of_god
Review routing: Native speaker review

Substantial interpretive range exists regarding the two witnesses’ identity (a future literal pair, an Elijah/Moses typological figure, or a symbol of the whole church’s corporate prophetic witness); this range should be presented transparently as an instance of the book’s own symbolic-but-real methodology rather than a single reading asserted as settled.

Temple and Ark of the Covenant Imagery

English name: temple and ark of the covenant imagery
Key terms: temple_of_god, ark_of_the_covenant
Review routing: Native speaker review

A live interpretive/denominational debate exists over whether ‘temple of God’ refers to a future literal rebuilt temple (a position in some popular futurist teaching) or symbolically to the church as God’s temple (a reading with strong New Testament support elsewhere); should be flagged as a range of views rather than silently resolved.

Low Risk Doctrines

The Suddenness and Certainty of Judgment

English name: the suddenness and certainty of judgment
Key terms: babylon_the_great
Review routing: Automated review

The repeated refrain ‘in a single hour’ is a stylistic emphasis on the suddenness of judgment; low risk, reinforcing rather than complicating the already-established wrath/judgment vocabulary treated elsewhere in this registry.

The Lukewarm Faith Warning

English name: the lukewarm faith warning
Key terms: lukewarm
Review routing: Automated review

A rare positive case, like the baseline’s ‘gospel truth’ idiom: ‘lukewarm’ has become a stable, widely used English idiom directly derived from this very passage, meaning half-hearted commitment, and generally reinforces rather than undermines the biblical sense; the main task is confirming readers recognize this idiom’s biblical source rather than treating it as a generic secular figure of speech.

The New Song and Redemption Accomplished

English name: the new song and redemption accomplished
Key terms: lamb, worthy
Review routing: Automated review

A stable, positive image of worship responding to accomplished redemption, cross-referencing the qualitative ‘new’ (kainos) of the core passage; minimal competing secular meaning beyond generic musical usage of ‘a new song.’
