Regional Analysis

Filipino (Tagalog-based) is the national language of the Philippines and the working language for this curriculum, but Catholic devotional intensity and Protestant/evangelical presence both vary meaningfully by region across the archipelago.

Regional variation relevant to translation

• Established Filipino Protestant and evangelical communities, present nationwide but especially concentrated in parts of Metro Manila, Mindanao, and among overseas Filipino diaspora congregations, already use the Ang Biblia/Magandang Balita Biblia’s settled register for core terms like Diyos, Jesus, and Espiritu Santo. • Devotionally intense Catholic regions (such as Cebu, home to the Santo Niño and the Sinulog festival, and other regions with strong fiesta and novena traditions) carry the highest concentration of the folk-devotional vocabulary this Language Package flags as high-risk (pamamagitan ng mga santo, image-centered incarnation devotion).
• First-generation evangelical believers from a folk-Catholic background, a significant share of the audience, encounter Protestant framing of familiar vocabulary (kaligtasan, mga banal) for the first time; getting the first explanation of Critical-risk terms right matters most for this group.
• Regional language communities (Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, and others) often read Filipino as a national second language for formal or religious material; this Language Package targets the national Filipino/Tagalog standard rather than these other Philippine languages.

Implications

Regional consistency matters most for reaching readers from devotionally intense Catholic regions, where the highest-risk folk-devotional vocabulary is also the most deeply practiced and emotionally significant — the glossary’s job is to give this reader group clear doctrinal framing without dismissing the devotional culture they come from.
