Semantic Analysis
Several Odia terms in this Language Package carry a narrower or broader semantic range than their English source word, which affects how consistently they can be used across contexts.
Narrower-than-English terms
- ପବିତ୍ର ଲୋକ (saints): English “saints” can informally mean “especially holy people,” but ପବିତ୍ର ଲୋକ must be used for all believers corporately (Romans 1:7), never for an elite literary-devotional class — that narrower, elevated sense belongs to ପଞ୍ଚସଖା, the title of the revered Odia Vaishnav poet-saints, and is explicitly rejected for this use.
- ଆହୂତ / ଆହ୍ୱାନ (called/calling): the same English word “called” covers at least three distinct senses in Romans (called to apostleship in 1:1, called to be saints in 1:7, and effectual calling to salvation in 8:28–30). The Odia rendering is context-sensitive and must be checked against which sense is active in each verse.
Broader-than-English terms
- ସାମର୍ଥ୍ୟ (power): used consistently for “power of God” (Romans 1:16) specifically to avoid ଶକ୍ତି, which has a much broader field in Odisha tied to the Shakta/mother-goddess devotional tradition (Maa Samaleswari, Maa Tarini). ସାମର୍ଥ୍ୟ is semantically narrower and safer.
- ବିଶ୍ୱାସ (faith): covers both “belief” and “trust” in Odia, capturing Romans’ sense of active, personal trust in Christ without needing two separate words.
A term whose narrowest sense is dangerously specific, not just broad
- ଠାକୁର: unlike most false-friend words in this pipeline, which are broad generic terms with an unwanted extra meaning, ଠାକୁର’s problem is the opposite — its most common everyday sense is narrow and specific: it names Jagannath. A translator reaching for a “safe generic honorific” could unknowingly reach for the one word in Odia that is least generic and most tied to a single named deity. This is flagged prominently in
translation_memory.json’s notes for both “lord” and “god.”
Implication
Where an Odia term’s semantic range differs from its English source, or where — distinctively in this Language Package — a term’s danger lies in being unexpectedly specific rather than unexpectedly broad, the glossary’s notes field exists specifically to flag the mismatch for translators.
