Existing Santali Bible translations

Santali does have real prior Bible-translation history: the Norwegian Santal Mission, led by Lars Olsen Skrefsrud and Hans P. Boerresen from the 1860s-70s, produced foundational Santali grammar and Scripture translation work, chiefly in Roman and Bengali script. This is genuine, notable translation history, unlike languages in this pipeline with no prior Scripture translation at all.

Where existing translations fall short for this curriculum

  • Predates Ol Chiki standardization: the historic Norwegian Santal Mission translation work predates Ol Chiki’s 1925 invention and its more recent official recognition, so no settled Ol Chiki-script edition of that translation tradition currently anchors this Language Package the way the Bible Society of India’s Hindi Old Version anchors Hindi.
  • No settled doctrinal-study vocabulary: the existing translation tradition is oriented toward Scripture narrative and devotional text, not doctrinal instruction; compound theological terms needed for a study curriculum (justification, imputed righteousness, obedience of faith) do not have crystallized renderings even in the historic tradition, let alone in Ol Chiki.
  • Fragmented script landscape compounds the gap: because Santali Christian literature is published across at least four scripts (Roman, Bengali, Devanagari, Ol Chiki) depending on region and publisher, there is no single reference edition a translator can consult the way a Hindi translator consults the BSI Old Version.

Readiness assessment

Santali’s translation-tradition readiness is comparable to Fulfulde’s in this pipeline: real historic missionary translation work exists, but it does not amount to a settled, doctrinally reviewed reference for a study curriculum, and the additional script-standardization gap (Ol Chiki’s recency) adds a further layer of unsettledness beyond Fulfulde’s dialect fragmentation. Nearly every compound term in translation_memory.json is marked provisional and pending confirmation by a Santali-speaking theologian and, separately, by a native Ol Chiki-literate typesetter.
