CRITICAL: Reformed perseverance-of-the-saints doctrine reads Romans 8’s assurance language as settled and complete; Catholic theology maintains ongoing uncertainty pending final perseverance and purgatorial purification. This contrast is sharp enough that softening it in either direction would misrepresent one tradition’s actual teaching to its own readers.
