Manipuri-speaking (Meitei) Bible study audiences are shaped by two distinct, currently practiced religious traditions, not a single dominant background with a historical minority exception. This dual, live reality matters for every theological document translated into Manipuri.

Core cultural currents

  • Sanamahism: the indigenous religion of the Meitei people, centered on Sanamahi (a household deity, elder brother of the ancestral serpent-deity Pakhangba) and the Umang Lai (forest and guardian deities honored at sacred sites through the Lai Haraoba festival). Lai Haraoba features a maibi, a priestess who enters ritual trance to communicate with and embody the Umang Lai, alongside maiba ritual specialists and healers. Sanamahism has undergone substantial modern revival tied to indigenous-identity movements.
  • Gaudiya Vaishnavism: introduced by the royal conversion of King Pamheiba (Garib Niwaz) in the early 18th century and deepened under King Bhagyachandra, who instituted the Manipuri Ras Lila, a Krishna-Radha devotional dance-drama tradition now recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage form. This remains the majority religious identity of most Meitei Hindus today, with well-developed bhakti (devotional love), seva (devotional service), and avatar theology.
  • Puya Meithaba (1729): the burning of indigenous Meitei religious manuscripts (puya), written in the native Meitei Mayek script, ordered following Pamheiba’s conversion to Vaishnavism. This is a foundational rupture in Meitei religious-literary memory, still actively referenced in contemporary Sanamahi-revival and script-revival movements, and shapes how this audience relates to claims about sacred, preserved texts.
  • Clan and royal lineage: Meitei kinship (yumnak, clan) and the historic Meitei kingship’s own claim of descent from the ancestral serpent-deity Pakhangba both give lineage and inheritance real cultural weight, shaping how adoption and “seed of David” language will land.
