Linguistic Gap Analysis

Linguistic Gap Analysis

Romanian’s theological vocabulary is unusually deep, having developed continuously through over a millennium of Orthodox liturgical and patristic use. The gaps in this Language Package are conceptual gaps between theological systems, not missing words.

Terms requiring compound phrases or explicit construction

  • Imputed righteousness (dreptate imputată): a specifically Protestant Reformed systematic-theology category with no native Orthodox equivalent, since Orthodox theology folds justification into the larger, more holistic process of theosis. This compound phrase must be built and explained rather than assumed as already familiar to an Orthodox-formed reader.
  • Justification (îndreptățire): exists as a word in both traditions but needs an accompanying note explaining that Orthodox and Western Protestant readers will supply different theological content for the same term (see Comparative Theology).

Terms where Romanian’s existing vocabulary is an asset, not a gap

  • Mântuire, har, înviere, slavă: all have deep, liturgically reinforced Romanian renderings — resurrection and glory language in particular are stronger cultural assets in Romanian than in almost any other language in this pipeline, given their centrality to Orthodox liturgical life.
  • Mesia, Hristos: established, unambiguous terms with a settled, orthodox theological meaning across all Romanian Christian traditions.

Gap-filling strategy

Where a concept has no native Orthodox category (imputed righteousness) or carries divergent content across traditions (justification, salvation, grace), this Language Package attaches explanatory notes rather than inventing new vocabulary, preserving continuity with both the Synodal and Cornilescu translation traditions.
