Regional Analysis

Thai is the national language of Thailand and functions as a shared second language for several ethnic and religious minorities within the country, but the audience for this curriculum spans communities with meaningfully different relationships to the Thai Christian vocabulary this Language Package establishes.

Regional variation relevant to translation

• Established Thai Protestant communities, concentrated in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and pockets of the northeast, already use the Thai Standard Version’s settled register for core terms like พระเจ้า, พระเยซู, and พระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์. This Language Package follows that established usage rather than inventing new renderings.
• First-generation believers from a Thai-Buddhist background, a growing share of the intended audience, encounter this vocabulary without prior church-community context, which raises the stakes on getting the first explanation of high-risk terms (especially incarnation and grace) right the first time.
• Northern and Isan dialect speakers generally read the Central Thai literary register used in Bible translation without difficulty, so this Language Package does not attempt dialect-specific renderings; it targets the same national literary standard used by THSV.
• Ethnic minority Christian communities (Karen, Hmong, and others within Thailand) often use their own mother-tongue Scriptures alongside Thai; this curriculum assumes Thai as the working language and does not address those separate translation traditions.

Implications

Regional consistency matters most for reaching Buddhist-background Thai readers who don’t share the established Protestant community’s settled vocabulary — the glossary’s job is to give this reader group unambiguous terms that resist collapsing into the country’s pervasive Buddhist-Brahmanic religious vocabulary.
