This curriculum’s glossary covers 47 terms drawn from Romans 1-16, each recorded in full in translation_memory.json with its approved Thai rendering, transliteration, doctrine link, risk tier, and rejected alternatives.
Highest-priority terms for translator onboarding
Before translating any Romans segment, translators should be drilled on the Critical-risk terms first, since these carry the highest cost of error and the most tempting false-friend alternatives:

Each entry records the doctrine it supports, so a reviewer flagged on a doctrine (e.g. Incarnation) can immediately see every term tied to that doctrine.
Maintenance note
Any new term encountered during Phase 2 translation that is not yet in this glossary must be added to translation_memory.json before the segment is finalized, following the same fields and risk-assessment process documented in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
God

Rejected alternatives: เทวดา, พระพรหม
CRITICAL: Never use เทวดา (a deva, one of many minor deities in the Buddhist-Brahmanic cosmology) or พระพรหม (Brahma, worshipped at popular shrines such as the Erawan Shrine). พระเจ้า is the established Thai Christian term for the one supreme personal Creator.
Grace
Approved rendering: พระคุณ
Transliteration: phra khun

Rejected alternatives: บุญ, กรรมดี, บารมี
CRITICAL: Never use บุญ (merit) or กรรมดี (good karma), and never บารมี (accumulated charisma/perfection built over lifetimes, a concept applied to both monks and the monarchy). พระคุณ must be taught as favor given apart from any accumulated merit.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: พระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์
Transliteration: Phra Winyan Borisut
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: วิญญาณ, ผี
CRITICAL: Never use วิญญาณ alone or ผี (a ghost or spirit in Thai folk animism). The qualifiers พระ and บริสุทธิ์ together mark this as the divine, personal third Person of the Trinity, not an ancestral or nature spirit.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: ความชอบธรรมที่ทรงถือว่าเป็นของเรา
Transliteration: khwam chop tham thi song thue wa pen khong rao

Rejected alternatives: บุญที่สะสมไว้
Righteousness credited by God, not earned. บุญที่สะสมไว้ (merit that has been accumulated) is explicitly rejected as the opposite doctrinal direction.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: การทรงบังเกิดเป็นมนุษย์

Rejected alternatives: การอวตาร
CRITICAL: NEVER use การอวตาร (avatar). Thai popular religion, through its Brahmanic-Hindu layer (the Ramakien epic, the royal title ‘Rama’ used by the Thai monarchy, and the popular cult of Vishnu’s avatars), makes ‘avatar’ the single most natural-sounding but doctrinally false rendering available. การทรงบังเกิดเป็นมนุษย์ = the eternal Son permanently taking on a single human nature, once, not a temporary divine descent that could recur.
Jesus
Approved rendering: พระเยซู

Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
CRITICAL: Standard Thai Bible form. The honorific prefix พระ (phra) is shared with Buddha images, monks, and Thai royalty, so teaching notes should reinforce that its use here marks unique deity, not generic sacredness.
Justification

Compound phrase required; no single Thai word carries the forensic sense. Never render as ‘gaining merit’ (การได้บุญ).
Lord
Approved rendering: องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า
Transliteration: ong phra phu pen chao

Rejected alternatives: เจ้านาย, ท่านผู้นำ
CRITICAL: In Romans 10:9 the confession ‘Jesus is Lord’ = พระเยซูทรงเป็นองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า. Thai carries an extensive royal honorific register applied to the monarchy; this term must clearly convey Christ’s unique, supreme divine Lordship and never blur into ordinary respectful address (เจ้านาย, ท่านผู้นำ) or read as a claim about political sovereignty.
Messiah
Approved rendering: พระเมสสิยาห์

CRITICAL: Never use พระศรีอริยเมตไตรย (Phra Si Ariya Metrai), the future Buddha of popular Thai millenarian expectation. The transliterated พระเมสสิยาห์ preserves the unique, exclusively fulfilled OT promise.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: การเป็นขึ้นจากตาย
Transliteration: kan pen khuen chak tai

CRITICAL: NEVER use การเกิดใหม่ or การกลับชาติมาเกิด (rebirth/reincarnation into a new existence within the cycle of samsara). การเป็นขึ้นจากตาย = the same body raised bodily, once for all, not a new life in the wheel of rebirth.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ความชอบธรรม

Rejected alternatives: บุญกุศล, ความดี
CRITICAL: Never use บุญกุศล (merit and wholesome karma) or generic ความดี (goodness). ความชอบธรรม = right standing before God granted by faith, not a moral score accumulated through practice.
Salvation

Transliteration: khwam rot
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: การบรรลุนิพพาน, การหลุดพ้น
CRITICAL: NEVER use การบรรลุนิพพาน (attaining nibbana) or การหลุดพ้น (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). ความรอด = deliverance BY God THROUGH Christ, a rescue by another, not a state self-attained through discipline and insight.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: พระบุตรของพระเจ้า
Transliteration: Phra But khong Phra Chao
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: เทพบุตร, อวตารของพระเจ้า
CRITICAL: Full phrase required. Never use เทพบุตร (a minor deva/celestial being’s son) or อวตารของพระเจ้า (an avatar of God). Conveys eternal, unique Sonship within the Godhead, not a lesser divine being or a temporary manifestation.

Aramaic term of intimacy preserved in Romans 8:15. Retain the transliteration alongside พระบิดา to convey filial closeness the formal title alone may not carry.

Transliteration: phu thi song riak
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: ผู้ที่ได้รับเชิญ
Context-sensitive: in 1:1 = called to apostleship; in 1:7 = called to be saints; in 8:28-30 = effectual calling to salvation. Distinguish from a mere invitation (ได้รับเชิญ) that can be declined without consequence.

Never conflate with โชคชะตา (fixed fate/destiny), a common Thai folk-astrological frame for a person’s life path.

God as personal, relational Father. Avoid พ่อขุน (the paternalistic ‘father-ruler’ title of Sukhothai-era Thai kingship), which frames fatherhood as benevolent political rule rather than intimate family relationship.
Glory

Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: บารมี
บารมี (the accumulated moral perfection and charisma attributed to great monks and to the monarchy across lifetimes) must never substitute for พระสิริ; God’s glory is his own inherent radiance and honor, not something built up over time.

Established Thai Bible term meaning ‘excellent news’. Must be qualified as the unique proclamation of salvation through Christ, not any pleasant announcement (ข่าวดี).

Set apart for God and morally pure. ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ leans toward the sacred potency of an object (an amulet or shrine); keep บริสุทธิ์ for moral/relational holiness.

Approved rendering: ธรรมบัญญัติ
Transliteration: tham banyat
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: พระธรรมวินัย
Mosaic Law. พระธรรมวินัย specifically names the Buddhist monastic disciplinary code; ธรรมบัญญัติ is the established Bible term and must be kept distinct.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: การเชื่อฟังที่มาจากความเชื่อ
Transliteration: kan cheuafang thi ma chak khwam cheua
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: การถือศีลอย่างเคร่งครัด
Romans 1:5 and 16:26. Obedience flowing from faith, not strict precept-observance (การถือศีลอย่างเคร่งครัด) performed to build merit.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: ฤทธิ์เดชของพระเจ้า
Transliteration: rit det khong Phra Chao
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: อำนาจศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของวัตถุมงคล
God’s own personal power to save; never the sacred potency ascribed to amulets and holy objects (วัตถุมงคล) in Thai folk practice.

Romans 1:3; conveys physical lineage and fulfillment of the Davidic covenant promise.
Sin

บาป is shared vocabulary with Thai Buddhism, so it must always be anchored to an offense against a personal God, not left as the impersonal negative-karma sense of อกุศลกรรม that simply lowers one’s merit balance.

Established Thai Christian term for a directly commissioned, authoritative sent-one; อาจารย์ใหญ่ (senior teacher) understates the delegated authority.

The gathered people of God. Never use วัด (Buddhist temple compound), which names a sacred site, not a congregation.

Faith
Approved rendering: ความเชื่อ
Transliteration: khwam cheua

Rejected alternatives: ศรัทธา
Object of faith must always be specified as Christ. ศรัทธา (saddha) carries strong Buddhist devotional connotation, reverential confidence toward the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha; ความเชื่อ keeps the term closer to personal trust in a specific person.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: คนต่างชาติ
Transliteration: khon tang chat
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: ชาวต่างประเทศ
Non-Jews; established term. ชาวต่างประเทศ (foreigner) is too narrowly political/ethnic for the theological category.
Intercession

Rejected alternatives: การบนบานศาลกล่าว
Prayer on behalf of others addressed to God directly, not การบนบานศาลกล่าว (vowing/bargaining with a spirit shrine for favor), a common Thai folk-religious practice.

Established, religion-neutral Thai Christian term for a commissioned task. งานเผยแผ่ศาสนา (propagating a religion) is closer to how Buddhist institutional expansion is described and should be avoided as the primary rendering.

In Romans 5:1, relational peace with God through justification, not the meditative mental calm (ความสงบทางใจ) pursued through Buddhist mindfulness practice.

Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: พระอรหันต์
พระอรหันต์ (arahant) denotes someone who has personally attained enlightenment through monastic discipline. วิสุทธิชน must be taught as every believer set apart in Christ, not a spiritually elite class.
