Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis

Several Persian terms in this Language Package carry a semantic range shaped by Persian philosophical and mystical tradition, or by modern secular culture, distinct from the specifically Quranic collisions seen in Arabic.

Terms narrower than intended, via philosophical/mystical association

  • فیض (grace): broader and more metaphysically loaded than intended, since Illuminationist and Mulla Sadra philosophy use “feyz” for divine emanation, an automatic overflow of being. Must be narrowed back to a freely willed, personal gift given specifically through Christ.
  • جلال (glory): carries deep Sufi poetic resonance (Rumi, Hafez) as one of a pair of aesthetic-mystical divine attributes (jalal/majesty and jamal/beauty). This is a genuine asset for devotional weight but must be narrowed back to the specific, historical glory of Christ rather than left as generalized mystical splendor.

Terms narrower than intended, via modern secular culture

  • آرامش (peace, avoided here): heavily used in contemporary Iranian wellness and self-help culture for stress relief and mindfulness; رendering Romans 5:1’s peace with God this way would reduce a legal, relational reality to a psychological technique. سلام is used instead.

Terms broader than English, via shared Shia devotional categories

  • شفاعت (intercession): broader than English “intercession” because of its central role in popular Shia devotion (Muharram mourning, shrine pilgrimage seeking the Imams’ intercession). This broadness is a liability, not a convenience — Christ’s intercession must be actively distinguished as exclusive and complete, not one intercessor’s contribution alongside others.

Implication

Where a Persian term’s semantic range has been shaped by Persian philosophy, Sufi poetry, or modern secular culture — categories that don’t map onto Arabic’s more purely Quranic-collision risk pattern — the glossary’s notes field (see translation_memory.json) exists specifically to flag which sense is intended.
