Regional Analysis

Mandarin is the standard national language across mainland China, Taiwan, and Chinese-diaspora communities worldwide, but the religious vocabulary and script convention a Bible study audience expects varies meaningfully by region and political context.

Regional variation relevant to translation

• Mainland Chinese Christian communities overwhelmingly use Simplified characters and the Chinese Union Version (和合本, CUV), typically the “Shen edition” (神版) in Protestant contexts. This Language Package follows that established usage.
• Taiwan and diaspora communities commonly use Traditional characters and sometimes prefer the “Shangdi edition” (上帝版) of the CUV, reflecting a different denominational history. This package is scoped to Simplified/神版 for mainland-oriented curriculum use; a Traditional-character adaptation would require its own review pass, not a mechanical character conversion, since some vocabulary choices differ by tradition, not just script.
• State-religious-policy context: mainland China regulates registered religious practice through official channels (e.g. the Three-Self Patriotic Movement for Protestant churches); unregistered (“house church”) networks use largely the same core vocabulary but may be more cautious with mission/evangelism framing given legal sensitivities. This curriculum’s language choices should remain religiously precise without requiring political commentary.
• Urban vs. rural and generational register: the target reading level for this curriculum assumes urban, general-education literacy. Younger, more secularized urban readers may have less exposure to classical-Chinese-derived theological vocabulary than older readers with a Confucian-classics education background.

Implications

This Language Package prioritizes Simplified-script, mainland-oriented Union Version vocabulary as its baseline, while flagging in translation_memory.json notes where a term’s cultural loading (e.g. 天命, 成圣) requires active clarification regardless of region.
