Existing Maithili Bible translations

Maithili Scripture translation is recent and limited compared to most languages in this pipeline: full Bible Society translation work in Maithili postdates the major 19th-century Serampore-era translation projects that established settled Christian vocabulary for languages like Hindi, Bengali, and Assamese, and existing Maithili Scripture portions have historically leaned on Hindi Christian vocabulary and translation choices given Hindi’s dominance as Bihar’s language of administration, education, and existing Christian literature.

Where existing translations fall short for this curriculum

• Thin precedent for core doctrinal vocabulary: because there is no long-established, independently developed Maithili Christian translation tradition, several of this curriculum’s highest-risk terms (incarnation, sonship, justification) do not have a settled Maithili-specific rendering to follow the way Hindi’s देहधारण or पुनरुत्थान can be trusted as-is. This Language Package makes deliberate, defensible choices rather than assuming existing precedent.
• Risk of uncritical Hindi transplant: where Maithili translation work exists, it has sometimes reproduced Hindi phrasing and grammar directly rather than rendering doctrine in native Maithili syntax (postpositions, verb infinitives, honorific verb agreement) — this curriculum deliberately corrects that pattern rather than repeating it.
• No treatment of Mithila-specific cultural risk: no existing Maithili Christian material specifically addresses the Sita-exemplar substitution risk or the Panjikaran lineage-consciousness concern identified in Culture Analysis, both of which are unique to this region rather than generic to North Indian Hindi-adjacent languages.

Readiness assessment

Maithili is the least translation-ready language in this batch in terms of settled precedent, but this is substantially offset by its heavy shared Sanskrit tatsama vocabulary with Hindi, which lets this Language Package responsibly adapt well-tested Hindi Critical-risk term choices (with grammatical and cultural adjustment) rather than starting from nothing. The translation task here is disciplined adaptation and precedent-setting, not pure invention.
