Core Glossary
Core Glossary: 1 Timothy (English → Persian)
This glossary lists every load-bearing theological term identified across the full analysis of 1 Timothy 1-6 (analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md). Terms marked [TM] are already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and are reused here exactly, with no deviation. Terms marked [NEW] are proposed additions to translation memory arising specifically from 1 Timothy’s vocabulary and are the required output of this Step for later formal registration in Phase 1 Steps 2+.

Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: عدالت
Transliteration: edalat
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: پارسایی
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 6:11, listed among virtues Timothy is to ‘pursue.’ Must be taught as pursued fruit flowing from a standing already granted through faith, not a status earned by the pursuit itself, to avoid collapsing into پارسایی-style Zoroastrian-inflected achieved virtue.
Salvation
Approved rendering: نجات
Transliteration: nejat
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:15 (‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’) and, in its disputed verbal form, 2:15 (‘saved through childbearing’). See new entry ‘saved_through_childbearing’ below for the compounded risk 2:15 introduces on top of the baseline’s tahrif/Karbala-intercession cautions.
Law
Approved rendering: ناموس
Transliteration: namus
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: شریعت
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:7-9 (‘teachers of the law,’ ‘the law is good if one uses it lawfully’). New collocation ‘used lawfully’ (νομίμως) renders as ناموس را بهدرستی به کار بردن; the ناموس/شریعت departure rationale documented in the baseline applies unchanged.
Messiah
Approved rendering: مسیح
Transliteration: Masih
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. The collocation ‘Christ Jesus’ dominates 1 Timothy; every occurrence must actively assert Christ’s own primary, sufficient redemptive role against the Mahdi-displacement risk, especially where 1 Timothy pairs مسیح with mediator (2:5), ransom (2:6), or appearing (6:14) language.
Intercession
Approved rendering: شفاعت
Transliteration: shafa’at
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: ἔντευξις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 2:1 (ἔντευξις) as one of four prayer-categories for civil rulers — a distinct sense (the church’s horizontal intercessory prayer) from Christ’s unique mediatorial role at 2:5 (see new entry ‘one_mediator’). Both legitimately share شفاعت, but teaching must explicitly disambiguate the two senses in the same lesson unit so 2:1’s practice never dilutes 2:5’s exclusivity claim.
Jesus
Approved rendering: عیسی
Transliteration: Isa
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout 1 Timothy, almost always in the fixed collocation ‘Christ Jesus’; the Quranic prophet-only, non-crucified, non-divine narrative must be actively corrected at every occurrence, especially in the mediator (2:5), ransom (2:6), and appearing (6:14) passages.
God
Approved rendering: خدا
Transliteration: Khoda
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: الله
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 1:1, 2:3, 4:10 apply ‘Savior’ to God the Father alongside Christ Jesus — see new entry ‘savior_god_the_father’ for the specific dual-Savior risk this creates for a tawhid-consistent reader.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: روحالقدس
Transliteration: Ruh-ol-Qods
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 4:1 (‘the Spirit expressly says’) and arguably 3:16 (ἐν πνεύματι, ‘vindicated in/by the Spirit’); the created-being-versus-divine-Person distinction from the Jibril/Gabriel identification must be made explicit at every occurrence.
Father
Approved rendering: پدر
Transliteration: pedar
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:2, ‘grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.‘
Lord
Approved rendering: خداوند
Transliteration: Khodavand
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: سرور
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:2, 1:12, 1:14, 6:3, 6:14, and climactically in the 6:15 doxology (‘Lord of lords’); must convey exclusive, supreme lordship at every occurrence, especially where paired with the appearing (ظهور) and mediator doctrines.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: تجسد
Transliteration: tajassod
Doctrine: Incarnation
Inherited from Romans package. Directly restated by 1 Timothy 3:16’s creedal hymn fragment, ‘manifested in the flesh’ (see new entry ‘manifested_in_the_flesh’). Reinforce the Zoroastrian-emanation (Amesha Spentas) caution specifically, since the hymn’s poetic cadence could be aesthetically assimilated to a Persian devotional-hymnic register describing an emanated intermediary being’s appearance.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: اطاعت ایمانی
Transliteration: eta’at-e imani
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Must be kept distinct from the household-order doctrine’s domestic اطاعت (submission) usage at 1 Timothy 3:4 and 6:1-2 (see new entry ‘submission_domestic’), which is a different, non-soteriological, relational category, not this faith-grounded soteriological one.
One Mediator
Approved rendering: واسطه
Transliteration: vaseteh
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Original: εἷς μεσίτης θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων
Category: Christology
New term. εἷς μεσίτης θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων, 1 Timothy 2:5. Render with the exclusivity numeral explicit and inseparable — ‘یک واسطه’ / ‘تنها یک واسطه’ — never bare واسطه without the numeral in this verse’s context. Twelver Shia piety’s popularly central doctrine of ongoing intercession/mediation through the Twelve Imams and shrines makes this the single highest-stakes verse in the letter for this audience; softening the exclusivity to ‘a great mediator’ would fatally weaken the claim.
Ransom For All
Approved rendering: فدیه
Transliteration: fadyeh
Doctrine: Ransom and Substitutionary Atonement
Original: ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων
Category: Salvation
New term. ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων, 1 Timothy 2:6. فدیه is an established Quranic/Islamic legal-religious ransom term — a positive bridge, but also a serious risk of assimilation into the popular Shia pattern where Hussein’s Karbala suffering is understood to benefit mourners. Must always occur adjacent to explicit ‘sufficient, once, for all people’ language, taught in the same breath as the ‘one mediator’ exclusivity claim.
Manifested In The Flesh
Approved rendering: در جسم ظاهر شد
Transliteration: dar jesm zaher shod
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christology
New term. ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί, 1 Timothy 3:16. Uses the common verb ظاهر شدن deliberately, NOT the technical eschatological noun ظهور (see ‘appearing_of_christ’). Directly restates the baseline incarnation (تجسد) Critical doctrine; reinforce the Zoroastrian-emanation caution given the hymn’s poetic, hymn-like cadence.
Apostasy Depart From Faith
Approved rendering: دور شدن از ایمان
Transliteration: dur shodan az iman
Doctrine: Apostasy and Departure from the Faith
Rejected alternatives: ارتداد
Original: ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως, 1 Timothy 4:1. FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: ارتداد is the precise Islamic-jurisprudence technical term for apostasy from Islam, carrying real capital-punishment stakes under classical fiqh and aspects of Iran’s penal code for converts. This descriptive phrase is mandated instead, to avoid importing life-and-death legal stakes onto a pastoral-doctrinal warning and endangering underground house-church readers.
Blasphemer
Approved rendering: کفرگو
Transliteration: kofr-go
Doctrine: Blasphemy and the Mercy Shown to Paul
Original: βλάσφημος
Category: Sin
New term. βλάσφημος, 1 Timothy 1:13. کفر is the primary technical category in Islamic theology for unbelief/blasphemy against God and can be adjudicated in Iranian law alongside apostasy-adjacent charges carrying severe penalties. Must not be softened, but must be taught with awareness it could otherwise sound like a capital religious crime casually forgiven.
Saved Through Childbearing
Approved rendering: با فرزندآوری نجات خواهد یافت
Transliteration: ba farzand-avari nejat khahad yaft
Doctrine: Saved Through Childbearing
Original: σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας
Category: Salvation
New term. σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας, 1 Timothy 2:15. Syntactically and theologically disputed clause (kept safe through childbirth / spiritually saved conditioned on continuing in faith-love-holiness / typological reference to Christ’s birth). Reuses Critical-tier نجات; a careless literal rendering risks sounding like salvation conditioned on successful childbirth. Must never be rendered without an accompanying interpretive note regardless of which reading is chosen.
Guard The Deposit
Approved rendering: امانت را حفظ کن
Transliteration: amanat ra hefz kon
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον
Category: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
New term. τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον, 1 Timothy 6:20. امانت is a major Quranic/Islamic ethical-legal concept (Quran 4:58, 33:72) for a trust that must be faithfully kept — the best available Persian word, but typically generic ethical trustworthiness rather than a fixed body of revealed doctrinal content. Every occurrence must specify referentially what the amanat is: the apostolic gospel content this letter has just summarized. Recommend the fuller phrase امانتِ ایمان where space allows.
Appearing Of Christ
Approved rendering: ظهور
Transliteration: zohur
Doctrine: The Eschatological Appearing of Christ
Original: ἐπιφάνεια
Category: Eschatology
New term. ἐπιφάνεια, 1 Timothy 6:14 (‘the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ’). ظهور is the precise, load-bearing technical term of Twelver Shia eschatology for the awaited reappearance of the Hidden Twelfth Imam (al-Mahdi), one of the most religiously and politically potent phrases in Iran’s devotional and state-ideological vocabulary. Per baseline precedent with قیامت and مسیح, the term is retained but must be paired at every occurrence with explicit correction that Christ’s own ظهور is singular, sufficient, and not preparatory to or subordinate to any other awaited figure’s reappearance.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: انجیل
Transliteration: Injil
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: مژده
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:11, ‘the glorious gospel of the blessed God,’ paired with جلال (glory). Must convey an authoritative announcement, not generic good news among competing religious teachings, and must not concede the tahrif (corruption) assumption about the NT record.
Grace
Approved rendering: فیض
Transliteration: feyz
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: لطف
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:2, 1:14 (‘the grace of our Lord overflowed to me’), 6:21. The verb ‘overflowed’ at 1:14 must not be allowed to reinforce feyz’s Illuminationist/Mulla Sadra emanation association; teach as a specific, personal gift tied to Christ’s mercy toward a persecutor, not an ontological outpouring.
Faith
Approved rendering: ایمان
Transliteration: iman
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs densely throughout 1 Timothy (1:2, 1:4-5, 1:14, 1:19, 2:7, 2:15, 3:9, 3:13, 4:1, 4:6, 4:12, 5:8, 6:10, 6:12, 6:21). 3:13’s ‘faith that is in Christ Jesus’ models the required practice of always naming the object of ایمان explicitly, guarding against the Shia Imamate creedal-assent layer documented in the baseline.
Apostle
Approved rendering: رسول
Transliteration: rasul
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 1:1 adds the collocation ‘apostle of Christ Jesus by the command (ἐπιταγή) of God our Savior’ — reinforce that Paul’s authority to command sound doctrine throughout this letter rests on divine commissioning, not self-claimed status, directly relevant to Guarding the Deposit of Faith.
Called
Approved rendering: دعوتشده
Transliteration: da’vat-shode
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλητός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. No direct κλητός occurrence in 1 Timothy, but the underlying concept governs Timothy’s own commissioning (1:18, 4:14); retained for cross-document consistency.
Calling
Approved rendering: دعوت
Transliteration: da’vat
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Retained for cross-document consistency; underlying concept present in Timothy’s charge and commissioning passages though the exact noun does not recur in 1 Timothy.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: تقدیس
Transliteration: taqdis
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. The cognate ἁγιασμῷ appears in 1 Timothy 2:15 (‘faith and love and holiness’) as one of three fruits named alongside the disputed clause; teach as fruit, not the ground, of the verse’s meaning.
Church
Approved rendering: کلیسا
Transliteration: kelisa
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: امت
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 3:5 (‘church of God’), 3:15 (‘household of God, the church of the living God’), 5:16. Reinforce the underground house-church reality documented in the baseline: this ‘household’ language names the home-based congregational form most Persian-speaking believers actually experience.
Sin
Approved rendering: گناه
Transliteration: gonah
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτωλός
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:9, 1:15 (Paul as ‘foremost of sinners’), 5:20, 5:22, 5:24. Paul’s self-designation reinforces Romans 5’s federal-headship argument against both fitrah and Chinvat-Bridge deeds-weighing defaults.
Prophet
Approved rendering: پیامبر
Transliteration: payambar
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: προφήτης / προφητεία
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:18, 4:14 — ‘the prophecies previously made about you,’ referring to Timothy’s own commissioning; retain finality-of-prophethood caution from baseline.
Overseer
Approved rendering: اسقف
Transliteration: osqof
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: ἐπίσκοπος / ἐπισκοπή
Category: Church Leadership
New term. ἐπίσκοπος/ἐπισκοπή, 1 Timothy 3:1-2. اسقف for the office-holder; مقام نظارت for the office/function itself. Must be taught as a functional, plural, character-tested congregational role exercised within the underground house-church network, never a state-recognized clerical rank or a source of independent doctrinal authority parallel to Shia ruhaniyat/marja’iyat.
Elder
Approved rendering: کشیش
Transliteration: kashish
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Rejected alternatives: شیخ
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church Leadership
New term. πρεσβύτερος, 1 Timothy 5:17, 5:19 (office sense; also 5:1 age-respect sense, رendered مرد سالخورده/بزرگتر there). شیخ rejected for its heavy Sufi/Islamic-clerical title resonance. کشیش/اسقف must be taught as two names for one office, never two ranks in a hierarchy, avoiding a Catholic/Orthodox-style multi-tier clergy system or a single-marja’-style outsized individual authority.
Husband Of One Wife
Approved rendering: مردی که تنها یک زن دارد
Transliteration: mardi ke tanha yek zan darad
Doctrine: Marital Fidelity of Church Leaders
Original: μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα
Category: Church Leadership
New term. μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα, 1 Timothy 3:2, 3:12. Direct collision with Iranian Shia-permitted polygyny (up to four wives) and mut’ah (temporary marriage, a Twelver Shia-specific institution). Must be taught as a positive, explicit contrast with both, not a neutral biographical detail.
Godliness
Approved rendering: دینداری
Transliteration: dindari
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Rejected alternatives: خداپرستی
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Godliness
New term. εὐσέβεια, recurring across 1 Timothy 2:2, 2:10, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:3, 6:5-6, 6:11. خداپرستی considered and rejected as too narrow (‘worship’ sense only). دینداری risks being heard as taqwa-style law-observant merit accumulation; must be consistently anchored to its NT sense as fruit of grace already received (1:14), never a merit-earning devotional achievement.
Contentment
Approved rendering: قناعت
Transliteration: qana’at
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: αὐτάρκεια
Category: Godliness
New term. αὐτάρκεια, 1 Timothy 6:6-8. Richly cultivated Sufi/Persian literary virtue (Sa’di, Hafez) — a genuine cultural asset — but classical Persian qana’at is typically self-generated philosophical detachment, whereas Paul’s autarkeia is grounded in active trust in God’s provision and paired with, not substituted for, active godliness and good works (6:17-19).
Mystery Of The Faith
Approved rendering: راز ایمان
Transliteration: raz-e iman
Doctrine: The Mystery of the Faith
Rejected alternatives: سرّ ایمان
Original: τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως, 1 Timothy 3:9, required of deacons held ‘with a clear conscience.’ راز is deeply embedded in Persian Sufi devotional poetry as an ongoing, ineffable, esoteric secret for advanced initiates — nearly the inverse of Paul’s mystērion, a now-fully-disclosed, publicly proclaimed, universally accessible truth. Every occurrence must explicitly teach this reversal.
Mystery Of Godliness
Approved rendering: راز دینداری
Transliteration: raz-e dindari
Doctrine: The Mystery of Godliness and the Incarnation
Original: τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον, 1 Timothy 3:16, introducing the creedal-hymn fragment. Compounds the راز esoteric-secret risk (see ‘mystery_of_the_faith’) with the دینداری taqwa-collapse risk (see ‘godliness’); both correctives must be applied together at every occurrence.
Pillar And Foundation Of Truth
Approved rendering: ستون و بنیاد حقیقت
Transliteration: sotun va bonyad-e haqiqat
Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth
Original: στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Ecclesiology
New term. στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας, 1 Timothy 3:15. حقیقت carries significant weight in Persian Sufi/Islamic philosophical vocabulary as al-Haqq, ultimate mystical Reality accessed through esoteric ascent; must be anchored to the specific, propositional, publicly-revealed apostolic gospel content (cf. 3:16), and taught as a function the church performs even without a legally recognized building.
Doctrines Of Demons
Approved rendering: تعلیمات شیاطین
Transliteration: ta’limat-e shayatin
Doctrine: Doctrines of Demons and Deceiving Spirits
Rejected alternatives: دیو, جن
Original: πνεύματα πλάνα καὶ διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. πνεύματα πλάνα καὶ διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων, 1 Timothy 4:1. دیو rejected (Zoroastrian mythological-monster/Shahnameh resonance); جن rejected (Quranic morally-mixed spirit category). شیاطین (Satan and followers, consistently evil, opposed to God) matches the NT sense; clarify NT demonology is not equated with Quranic jinn cosmology. Also covers ‘deceitful spirits’ (ارواح گمراهکننده) in the same verse.
Myths And Endless Genealogies
Approved rendering: افسانهها و نسبنامههای بیپایان
Transliteration: afsaneh-ha va nasab-nameh-haye bi-payan
Doctrine: Myths and Endless Genealogies
Original: μῦθοι καὶ γενεαλογίαι ἀπέραντοι
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. μύθοις καὶ γενεαλογίαις ἀπεράντοις, 1 Timothy 1:4; cf. 4:7’s ‘myths and old wives’ tales’ (افسانههای کفرآمیز و پیرزنی). نسبنامه intersects directly with the Twelver Shia doctrine of verified sayyid descent and the Imamate’s own genealogical succession from Ali through the Twelve Imams; must be framed as targeting a specific first-century speculative controversy, not a blanket verdict on lineage-consciousness generally.
Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering: تعلیم صحیح
Transliteration: ta’lim-e sahih
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία, 1 Timothy 1:10, 4:6, 6:3. صحیح is the exact technical term Islamic hadith science uses to certify a transmitted saying as authentic (versus da’if/weak or mawdu’/fabricated) — a useful structural bridge, but teachers must make explicit that the verifying authority is the apostolic gospel itself, not a hadith-style isnad chain-of-transmission methodology.
Savior God The Father
Approved rendering: نجاتدهنده
Transliteration: nejat-dahande
Doctrine: Savior Language Applied to Both God and Christ
Original: σωτήρ (θεοῦ)
Category: God
New term. σωτήρ applied to θεός (God the Father), 1 Timothy 1:1, 2:3, 4:10, alongside ‘Christ Jesus our Savior’ elsewhere. Built on TM salvation’s نجات root. Must be explicitly taught that these are not competing or contradictory claims but reflect one triune saving purpose, guarding against a tawhid-consistent reader’s instinct to treat them as two separate, competing claims to unique deity.
Mercy
Approved rendering: رحمت
Transliteration: rahmat
Doctrine: Blasphemy and the Mercy Shown to Paul
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation
New term. ἔλεος, 1 Timothy 1:2, 1:13, 1:16. رحمت is one of the two central divine names in Islam (al-Rahman, al-Rahim) — broadly compatible, genuinely positive overlap — but must be anchored specifically to Christ’s atoning work as its ground (1:14-16), not treated as a generic, ritually-invoked divine attribute detached from the cross.
Women In Church Service
Approved rendering: زنان
Transliteration: zanan
Doctrine: Women in Church Service
Original: γυναῖκας
Category: Church Leadership
New term. γυναῖκας, 1 Timothy 3:11. Genuinely unresolved interpretive question in the Greek text itself (wives of deacons, or women serving in a diaconal role); acute pastoral stakes given many Iranian house-churches are functionally led by women due to the scarcity and legal exposure of publicly identified male leaders. Translation must preserve the deliberately non-committal source ambiguity rather than silently disambiguating toward either reading; mandatory interpretive note required.
Able To Teach
Approved rendering: قادر به تعلیم دادن
Transliteration: qader be ta’lim dadan
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: διδακτικός
Category: Church Leadership
New term. διδακτικός, 1 Timothy 3:2. This qualification presumes ordinary tested believers, not a credentialed clerical class, may be recognized as authoritative teachers — a direct structural contrast to the Shia requirement of years of seminary (hawza) training before religious teaching authority is recognized.
Good Testimony With Outsiders
Approved rendering: حسن شهرت / نام نیک
Transliteration: hosn-e shohrat / nam-e nik
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Rejected alternatives: شهادت
Original: μαρτυρία καλὴ ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν
Category: Church Leadership
New term. μαρτυρία καλὴ ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν, 1 Timothy 3:7. شهادت rejected as primary rendering: its dominant contemporary sense in Persian is ‘martyrdom’ (especially Shia Karbala martyrdom theology), not everyday ‘testimony/reputation.’ حسن شهرت/نام نیک avoids accidentally invoking martyrdom-theology in an unrelated qualification-list context; شهادت is reserved for genuine witness/testimony contexts.
Double Honor
Approved rendering: احترام دوچندان
Transliteration: ehteram-e do-chandan
Doctrine: Honor and Material Support for Elders
Original: διπλῆ τιμή
Category: Church Leadership
New term. διπλῆ τιμή, 1 Timothy 5:17, understood to include material remuneration (‘the laborer deserves his wages,’ 5:18). Intersects delicately with the real economic vulnerability and lack of legal employment status of underground house-church pastors in Iran; acute, non-merely-lexical pastoral-application stakes.
Quietness And Authority In Worship
Approved rendering: آرامش و عدم تسلط
Transliteration: aramesh va adam-e tasallot
Doctrine: Women’s Conduct and Teaching Authority in Worship
Original: ἡσυχία / αὐθεντεῖν
Category: Public Worship
New term. ἡσυχία/αὐθεντεῖν, 1 Timothy 2:11-12. آرامش is permitted here (unlike its baseline rejection for peace) because this is an unrelated worship-conduct lexical domain, not the soteriological peace-with-God sense; must remain clearly distinguished from peace (سلام). Requires mandatory theologian-level framing distinguishing the text’s own debated argument from contemporary Iranian gender-legal politics, avoiding unintended alignment with or reaction against state messaging.
Medium Risk Terms
Holy
Approved rendering: مقدس
Transliteration: moqaddas
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 2:8, ‘lifting holy hands’ in prayer — a ritual-gesture context; retain the relational-moral sense, not a ritual-purity requirement for prayer posture.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: غیریهودیان
Transliteration: gheyr-yahudian
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: امتها
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 2:7, ‘a teacher of the Gentiles.‘
Glory
Approved rendering: جلال
Transliteration: jalal
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:11, 1:17, and in 3:16’s creedal hymn (‘taken up in glory’). Continue to distinguish Christ’s specific historical glory from generalized Sufi mystical-aesthetic jalal/jamal categories.
Fellowship
Approved rendering: مشارکت
Transliteration: mosharekat
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: κοινωνικός
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. The cognate κοινωνικούς appears at 1 Timothy 6:18, ‘ready to share’ — an ethical-generosity sense related to but distinct from the corporate participation sense of Romans; keep مشارکت’s root-resonance-with-shirk caution in view.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: عطایای روحانی
Transliteration: ‘ataya-ye ruhani
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Original: χάρισμα
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 4:14 of Timothy’s own personal ministry gift (χάρισμα), conferred through prophecy and the laying on of the council of elders’ hands — a singular, commissioning-specific instance rather than Romans 12’s corporate gift-list; still requires the روحانی qualifier.
Peace
Approved rendering: سلام
Transliteration: salam
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: آرامش
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:2, ‘grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Never render as آرامش. Note: آرامش is separately permitted in this curriculum only for the unrelated worship-conduct sense of 2:11-12 (‘quietness’), never for this soteriological peace-with-God sense — see ‘quietness_and_authority_in_worship’ below.
Deacon
Approved rendering: شماس
Transliteration: shammas
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Rejected alternatives: خادم (as primary)
Original: διάκονος
Category: Church Leadership
New term. διάκονος, 1 Timothy 3:8, 3:12-13. Retain the distinction between شماس (the technical office) and generic خادم (‘servant’) devotional language used elsewhere of all believers; collapsing the two blurs Qualifications for Church Leadership by implying every act of service is the formal diaconate, or that the diaconate is merely honorific.
Different Doctrine
Approved rendering: تعلیم دیگر/نادرست دادن
Transliteration: ta’lim-e digar/namoradorost dadan
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Original: ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖν, 1 Timothy 1:3, 6:3. Descriptive rendering; low independent collision risk beyond the ‘sound_doctrine’ entry’s own note.
Hospitable
Approved rendering: مهماننواز
Transliteration: mehman-navaz
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: φιλόξενος
Category: Church Leadership
New term. φιλόξενος, 1 Timothy 3:2. Mehman-navazi is an intensely cultivated, near-sacred Persian cultural virtue — a genuine asset — but must be anchored to the specific NT purpose (receiving traveling believers, especially where hospitality carries real security risk in the underground house-church network) rather than left as generic Persian social custom.
New Convert
Approved rendering: تازهایمان
Transliteration: tazeh-iman
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: νεόφυτος
Category: Church Leadership
New term. νεόφυτος, 1 Timothy 3:6. Since nearly the entire Iranian believing community consists of first-generation Muslim-background converts, ‘recent convert’ is a much larger proportion of any congregation than in settings with generational Christian families; teach as tested maturity over time, never a permanent second-class status for converts.
Clear Conscience
Approved rendering: وجدان پاک
Transliteration: vejdan-e pak
Doctrine: The Mystery of the Faith
Original: καθαρὰ συνείδησις
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. καθαρὰ συνείδησις, recurring 1 Timothy 1:5, 1:19, 3:9, 4:2. وجدان (vejdan) is a relatively neutral, modern Persian ethical-philosophical term, so lexical collision risk is low; the higher risk is theological flattening — teach as a Spirit-informed conscience tethered to sound doctrine (3:9’s own pairing), not a generically well-adjusted psychological state or autonomous inner moral compass.
Seared Conscience
Approved rendering: وجدانی داغخورده
Transliteration: vejdan-i dagh-khorde
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Original: κεκαυστηριασμένη συνείδησις
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. κεκαυστηριασμένη συνείδησις, 1 Timothy 4:2. A conscience rendered morally numb through habitual suppression of truth — the negative counterpart to ‘clear conscience.’ Preserve the medical-branding metaphor (scar tissue from a hot iron).
Tested Before Office
Approved rendering: نخست آزموده شوند
Transliteration: nokhost azmude shavand
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: δοκιμάζω
Category: Church Leadership
New term. δοκιμαζέσθωσαν, 1 Timothy 3:10. A proving process over time (as of testing metal for genuineness), not an instantaneous credential check; important corrective to any tendency, present in some house-church settings under leadership scarcity, to install leaders quickly without a proven track record.
Standing Gained Through Service
Approved rendering: مقام نیکو
Transliteration: maqam-e niku
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: βαθμός
Category: Church Leadership
New term. βαθμός, 1 Timothy 3:13. مقام risks being read as a formal, permanent clerical rank or title (as in Sufi/Shia religious hierarchy); pair with a clarifying phrase to avoid institutionalizing what the Greek presents as an organic, earned reputation for faithful service.
Widow Indeed
Approved rendering: بیوهی واقعی
Transliteration: bive-ye vaqe’i
Doctrine: Care for Widows and the Household of Faith
Original: χήρα ὄντως
Category: Care for the Household of Faith
New term. χήρα ὄντως, 1 Timothy 5:3-16. Positive overlap with Islamic charitable widow-care categories (zakat recipients, hadith commendation) — a genuine bridge; but the passage’s family-first, criteria-based enrollment logic (age, character, reputation, 5:9-10) is structurally distinct from the zakat-recipient model and must be taught as such.
Laying On Of Hands
Approved rendering: گذاردن دستها
Transliteration: gozardan-e dast-ha
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and Ministry Commissioning
Original: ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν
Category: Church Leadership
New term. ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν, 1 Timothy 4:14, 5:22. Could be assimilated to folk-Islamic and Sufi practices of a holy person’s touch transmitting baraka (spiritual potency); must be taught as a symbolic act of commissioning and corporate affirmation, not a magical transfer of power.
Council Of Elders
Approved rendering: شورای کشیشان
Transliteration: shura-ye kashishan
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and Ministry Commissioning
Original: πρεσβυτέριον
Category: Church Leadership
New term. πρεσβυτέριον, 1 Timothy 4:14. Must be taught as a plural, collegial, mutually-accountable body, resisting drift toward a single authoritative cleric figure — avoiding both a monarchical bishop model and any parallel to a single Shia marja’ figure’s outsized individual authority.
Love Of Money
Approved rendering: پولدوستی
Transliteration: pul-dusti
Doctrine: Love of Money and Godliness as False Gain
Original: φιλαργυρία
Category: Ethics
New term. φιλαργυρία, 1 Timothy 3:3 (ἀφιλάργυρος), 6:10 (‘a root of all evils’). Broadly compatible vocabulary linking the deacon/overseer qualification to the letter’s closing warning; low/medium collision risk.
Falsely Called Knowledge
Approved rendering: معرفتی که به دروغ علم نامیده میشود
Transliteration: ma’refati ke be doroq elm namide mishavad
Doctrine: Falsely-Called Knowledge
Original: ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις
Category: Sound Doctrine
New term. ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις, 1 Timothy 6:20. علم (‘ilm) is intensely venerated in Islamic culture as a devotional virtue and a substantial ground of Shia clerical authority; this verse critiques a specific identifiable false teaching claiming the label ‘knowledge,’ and must never be abbreviated to علم alone lest it sound like a broad suspicion of learning or scholarship generally.
King Of Kings Lord Of Lords
Approved rendering: شاه شاهان و خداوند خداوندان
Transliteration: shah-e shahan va khodavand-e khodavandan
Doctrine: The Doxology of Divine Sovereignty
Original: ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων
Category: God
New term. ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων, 1 Timothy 6:15. ‘Malik al-Mulk’ (King of the Kingdom) is itself a recognized Quranic divine title (Quran 3:26), giving شاه شاهان real positive resonance; ensure the doxology is read as continuous with the immediately preceding Christ-centered charge (6:13-14), since the grammatical referent of ‘he’ in 6:15 is itself debated among interpreters and should be flagged, not silently resolved.
Alone Has Immortality
Approved rendering: تنها او بیمرگی دارد
Transliteration: tanha u bi-margi darad
Doctrine: The Doxology of Divine Sovereignty
Original: ὁ μόνος ἔχων ἀθανασίαν
Category: God
New term. ὁ μόνος ἔχων ἀθανασίαν, 1 Timothy 6:16. Literary Zoroastrian immortality themes are present in Persian religious culture but are not doctrinally competing; low collision risk beyond standard care for the exclusivity term μόνος.
Good Confession
Approved rendering: اعتراف نیکو
Transliteration: e’teraf-e niku
Doctrine: The Good Confession
Original: ἡ καλὴ ὁμολογία
Category: Christology
New term. ἡ καλὴ ὁμολογία, 1 Timothy 6:12-13. اعتراف/اقرار structurally resembles the Islamic shahada as a public, defining verbal act of religious allegiance — a genuine point of productive contact — but must be explicitly and consistently tied to this curriculum’s own confession content, cross-referencing the baseline’s fixed, verbatim rendering of Romans 10:9’s ‘Jesus is Lord’ (عیسی خداوند است).
Bondservants And Masters
Approved rendering: غلامان، بردگان / اربابان
Transliteration: gholaman, bardegan / arbaban
Doctrine: Household Order and Submission
Original: δοῦλοι / δεσπόται
Category: Household Order
New term. δοῦλοι/δεσπόται, 1 Timothy 6:1-2. Requires a clear historical-context note (this addresses a specific ancient social institution, not a timeless endorsement of slavery or commentary on contemporary labor relations); historical Islamic law (Sunni and Shia fiqh alike) likewise regulated rather than abolished slavery, a shared background requiring pastoral care, not comparative point-scoring.
Household Management
Approved rendering: به خوبی سرپرستی/مدیریت کردن
Transliteration: be khubi sarparasti/modiriyat kardan
Doctrine: Household Order and Submission
Original: προΐστημι
Category: Church Leadership
New term. προΐστημι, 1 Timothy 3:4-5, 3:12, 5:17. Caution: سرپرستی is the very word the baseline’s adoption entry documents as Iran’s weaker legal-custodianship term (rejected there for denying full inheritance rights). Its use here for household management is a different, non-technical sense and is acceptable, but must not bleed back into or soften the adoption doctrine’s insistence on فرزندخواندگی.
Submission Domestic
Approved rendering: اطاعت
Transliteration: eta’at
Doctrine: Household Order and Submission
New term. ὑποταγή, 1 Timothy 3:4 (children’s submission to a father’s godly authority). Domestic-relational, not soteriological; must be kept distinct from TM obedience_of_faith (اطاعت ایمانی), a different, faith-grounded theological category, despite the shared root.
King Eternal Immortal Invisible
Approved rendering: نافانی و نادیدنی
Transliteration: nafani va nadidani
Doctrine: The Doxology of Divine Sovereignty
New term. ἄφθαρτος/ἀόρατος, 1 Timothy 1:17 (‘the King eternal, immortal, invisible’). Positively compatible with Islamic apophatic divine-attribute language (God’s incorporeality/invisibility is a shared conviction); low collision risk, anticipates the fuller doxology of 6:15-16.
Low Risk Terms
Prophecy
Approved rendering: نبوت
Transliteration: nabovat
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: προφητεία
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:18, 4:14 in connection with Timothy’s commissioning.
Exhort
Approved rendering: تشویق کردن
Transliteration: tashviq kardan
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:3, 5:1, 6:2 (παρακαλέω) — apply the baseline’s context-sensitivity rule (نصیحت کردن for entreaty/charge; تشویق کردن for encouragement) verse by verse.
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: شکرگزاری
Transliteration: shokr-gozari
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs 1 Timothy 2:1, 4:3-4 (‘received with thanksgiving’).
Above Reproach
Approved rendering: بیملامت
Transliteration: bi-malamat
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: ἀνεπίλημπτος / ἀνέγκλητος
Category: Church Leadership
New term. ἀνεπίλημπτος/ἀνέγκλητος, 1 Timothy 3:2, 3:10. A legal/forensic standard of observable public integrity, not sinlessness. Low independent collision risk.
Dignity Gravitas
Approved rendering: وقار
Transliteration: vaqar
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: σεμνότης / σεμνός
Category: Church Leadership
New term. σεμνότης/σεμνός, recurring across overseer (3:4), deacon (3:8), women/wives (3:11), and general worship-conduct instructions (2:2). Low collision risk.
Boldness In Faith
Approved rendering: دلیری / اطمینان
Transliteration: deliri / etminan
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: παρρησία
Category: Faith
New term. παρρησία, 1 Timothy 3:13, produced by faithful diaconal service. Real, non-metaphorical stakes for underground house-church deacons operating under genuine legal risk; teach as Spirit-given confidence appropriate to that context, not reckless public exposure.
Partiality
Approved rendering: طرفداری
Transliteration: tarafdari
Doctrine: Honor and Material Support for Elders
Original: πρόσκλισις
Category: Church Leadership
New term. πρόσκλισις, 1 Timothy 5:21. Favoritism or bias, warned against in the handling of accusations against elders. Low collision risk; standard ethical vocabulary.
Faithful Saying Formula
Approved rendering: این سخن درست است
Transliteration: in sokhan dorost ast
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
New term. πιστὸς ὁ λόγος, a fixed formula recurring across the Pastorals (1 Timothy 1:15; 3:1; 4:9; also 2 Timothy 2:11; Titus 3:8). Signals settled apostolic teaching, not personal opinion. Formulaic; low collision risk, but must be rendered identically at every occurrence across all Pastoral Epistles documents for cross-document consistency.
Love Agape
Approved rendering: محبت
Transliteration: mohabbat
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Rejected alternatives: عشق
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith
New term. ἀγάπη, recurring throughout 1 Timothy (1:5, 1:14, 2:15, 4:12, 6:11). محبت is the established, low-risk Persian Christian term for self-giving love; عشق (the passionate/romantic-mystical love vocabulary of Sufi poetry) is rejected to avoid importing unwanted Sufi romantic-union connotations onto Christian self-giving love.
