Semantic Analysis — 1 Corinthians (English → Urdu)
Preliminary Note on Continuity with the Baseline
This analysis extends, and never contradicts, the Romans/Galatians Urdu Language Package. Every term already recorded in translation_memory.json or bible_term_registry.json (e.g. گناہ, فضل, ایمان, راستبازی, نجات, قیامت, خداوند, خدا کا بیٹا, مسیح, یسوع, خدا, روح القدس, پاک, مقدس لوگ, تقدیس, کلیسیا, رسول, بلایا گیا, بلاہٹ, غیر قوموں, جلال, خدا کی قدرت, رفاقت, آزادی, جسم, صلیب/مصلوب, بت پرستی, شکرگزاری, خدا کی بادشاہی, شریعت, عہد, ختنہ, نامختون) is reused exactly below without re-litigating its risk tier or reasoning, which remains as recorded in the baseline. This document’s new contribution is (a) the verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage, (b) the chapter-by-chapter identification and risk-assessment of terms new to this curriculum, and (c) explicit flagging of 1 Corinthians’ distinctive doctrinal-collision profile, which differs from Romans/Galatians in several important ways:
- The Lord’s Supper (ch. 11) introduces a distinct dietary-law collision (blood, wine) not present in Romans/Galatians, structurally similar in severity to the crucifixion-denial risk already flagged as this Language Package’s highest-priority category.
- Head covering (ch. 11) and women’s silence (ch. 14) introduce a live, contemporary gender-practice collision (parallel to, but doctrinally distinct from, Islamic hijab/purdah discourse) not present in the Romans/Galatians baseline.
- The general resurrection of believers (ch. 15) is, unusually, a point of genuine doctrinal bridge rather than pure collision with Islamic qiyamat (both traditions affirm a future bodily resurrection), even though the mechanism (in Christ, as firstfruits) and scope still require careful distinction.
- Idol meat (ch. 8, 10) introduces a structural — not merely lexical — parallel to halal/haram dietary law, requiring comparative-theology framing rather than a simple word-choice fix.
PART 1 — Core Passage: 1 Corinthians 15:1–11 (Verse-by-Verse)
15:1
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand…”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| γνωρίζω | gnōrizō | to make known, remind | inform, remind, declare | ”I would remind,” “I make known,” “I declare” | Paul re-presents settled apostolic tradition, not a novel teaching | یاد دلاتا ہوں | Low |
| εὐαγγέλιον | euangelion | good news | the gospel message; a proclaimed announcement | ”gospel,” “good news” | The specific, fixed apostolic message about Christ (defined in vv.3-5) | خوش خبری (baseline, reused exactly) | High (baseline) |
| εὐηγγελισάμην | euēngelisamēn | I announced good news | preached, proclaimed | ”preached,” “proclaimed,” “announced” | Paul’s original founding proclamation at Corinth | خوش خبری کی منادی کی | High (shares baseline gospel risk) |
| παρελάβετε | parelabete | you received | to receive a tradition, accept, take up | ”received,” “accepted” | Technical term (with παρέδωκα, v.3) for transmission of authoritative tradition — not private opinion | قبول کیا | Medium — must not be flattened to generic “heard” |
| ἑστήκατε | hestēkate | you stand, you have stood | to stand firm, be established | ”you stand,” “in which you now stand” | Present abiding position of the Corinthians on this gospel foundation | تم قائم ہو | Low |
15:2
“…and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| σῴζεσθε | sōzesthe | you are being saved | present passive; ongoing salvation | ”you are saved,” “you are being saved” | Present-tense salvation flowing from continued adherence to the gospel content of vv.3-5 | نجات پا رہے ہو | Critical (baseline نجات risk applies in full — see baseline notes on Islamic najat mechanism) |
| κατέχετε | katechete | hold fast, retain | hold firmly, possess, retain | ”hold fast,” “hold firmly” | Perseverance in the received gospel as the condition (not the ground) of ongoing assurance | قائم رکھنا | Medium |
| εἰκῇ | eikē | in vain, without cause | fruitlessly, groundlessly | ”in vain,” “for nothing” | Warns that professed faith untethered from the historical gospel content is empty | بے فائدہ / بےکار | Low |
| ἐπιστεύσατε | episteusate | you believed | to trust, to have faith | ”believed,” “trusted” | Object-specific faith in the gospel just defined | ایمان لائے | High (baseline ایمان risk — object of faith must remain explicit: the gospel of vv.3-5, not generic belief) |
15:3
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,“
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| παρέδωκα | paredōka | I handed over, delivered | to transmit tradition officially | ”I delivered,” “I passed on” | Technical rabbinic/apostolic transmission-formula language; marks vv.3-5 as fixed, pre-Pauline creedal material | سپرد کیا / پہنچایا | Medium — must convey formal transmission of authoritative tradition, not casual telling |
| ἐν πρώτοις | en prōtois | among the first things, of first importance | primary, foundational | ”as of first importance,” “first of all” | Marks the death-burial-resurrection sequence as the non-negotiable core of the gospel | سب سے پہلے، نہایت اہم بات | Low |
| Χριστός | Christos | Anointed One | title/name for Jesus as Messiah | ”Christ,” “Messiah” | The crucified Anointed One — content exceeding the Qur’anic al-Masih | مسیح (baseline, reused exactly) | Critical (baseline messianic_promise risk) |
| ἀπέθανεν | apethanen | he died | to die, literal death | ”died,” “he died” | A real, historical death — the load-bearing premise the Qur’an (4:157) denies | مرا / وفات پائی | Critical — see crucifixion note below; must never be softened toward “seemed to die” |
| ὑπὲρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν | hyper tōn hamartiōn hēmōn | on behalf of / for our sins | substitutionary, vicarious | ”for our sins,” “on account of our sins” | Substitutionary atonement — Christ’s death addresses guilt, not merely instruction or example | ہمارے گناہوں کے لیے | Critical (compounds baseline گناہ risk with baseline crucifixion/atonement risk) |
| κατὰ τὰς γραφάς | kata tas graphas | according to the Scriptures | in fulfillment of, consistent with | ”according to the Scriptures,” “as the Scriptures foretold” | Old Testament fulfillment (esp. Isaiah 53); ties to baseline fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine | کلامِ مقدس کے مطابق | High (baseline inspiration_of_scripture / fulfillment_of_prophecy risk) |
15:4
“that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,“
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ἐτάφη | etaphē | he was buried | to bury, entomb | ”was buried,” “he was buried” | Confirms the death was real and physical — burial is evidentiary, not merely narrative detail | دفن ہوا | High — new term for this curriculum; its evidentiary function (real death, real body, real tomb) directly counters the Qur’anic “it was made to appear so” reading of 4:157 and must be preserved, not glossed over |
| ἐγήγερται | egēgertai | he has been raised | perfect tense — a past act with ongoing, abiding results | ”was raised,” “has been raised,” “is risen” | The perfect tense signals Christ’s resurrection as a settled, permanent, present reality, not a one-time event receding into the past | جی اٹھا ہے (perfect force retained) | Critical (baseline resurrection_of_christ risk — see baseline note distinguishing Christ’s unique, already-accomplished resurrection from the general end-times قیامت) |
| τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ | tē hēmera tē tritē | on the third day | specific, dated, historical | ”on the third day,” “the third day” | Concrete historical specificity, resisting mythologization | تیسرے دن | Low |
| κατὰ τὰς γραφάς | kata tas graphas | according to the Scriptures | (repeated from v.3) | — | Reinforces Old Testament fulfillment for the resurrection specifically | کلامِ مقدس کے مطابق | High (as v.3) |
15:5
“and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ὤφθη | ōphthē | he was seen, he appeared | to be seen, to show oneself, to appear | ”appeared,” “was seen,” “showed himself” | Introduces the eyewitness-testimony chain (repeated 5x in vv.5-8); the resurrection is presented as verifiable historical fact, not vision or metaphor | دکھائی دیا / ظاہر ہوا | Critical — new evidentiary term for this curriculum; must retain the sense of an objective, witnessed appearance (not a subjective inner experience), since the entire apologetic weight of vv.5-8 rests on it |
| Κηφᾷ | Kēpha | Cephas (Aramaic “Rock”) | proper name (= Peter) | “Cephas,” “Peter” | First named eyewitness | کیفا | Low (proper name) |
| τοῖς δώδεκα | tois dōdeka | to the twelve | the twelve apostles as a body | ”the twelve,” “the twelve apostles” | Corporate, official apostolic witness | بارہ رسولوں کو | Medium (baseline رسول risk applies) |
15:6
“Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| πεντακοσίοις ἀδελφοῖς | pentakosiois adelphois | five hundred brothers | a large, named group of witnesses | ”500 brothers,” “500 people” | Mass eyewitness testimony, verifiable in principle by Paul’s contemporaries | پانچ سو بھائیوں کو | Low |
| ἐκοιμήθησαν | ekoimēthēsan | they fell asleep | euphemism for death | ”have fallen asleep,” “have died" | "Sleep” as a resurrection-hope euphemism for a believer’s death — presupposes the resurrection just argued | سو گئے (نیند کی طرح موت) | Medium — must be recognizable as a euphemism for death, not confused with literal sleep; carries the same hope-laden nuance as “asleep in Christ” throughout ch. 15 |
15:7
“Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| Ἰακώβῳ | Iakōbō | James | proper name (the Lord’s brother) | “James” | Additional named, checkable witness | یعقوب | Low (proper name) |
| τοῖς ἀποστόλοις πᾶσιν | tois apostolois pasin | to all the apostles | the full apostolic company | ”all the apostles” | Completes the official apostolic witness chain | تمام رسولوں کو | Medium (baseline رسول risk) |
15:8
“Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ἔσχατον | eschaton | last, at the end | final, last of all | ”last of all,” “finally” | Paul closes, not opens, the witness list — he is not claiming primacy | سب کے بعد | Low |
| ὥσπερ τῷ ἐκτρώματι | hōsper tō ektrōmati | as to the one born abnormally/prematurely | a rare, harsh self-deprecating metaphor (miscarried or untimely birth) | “as to one untimely born,” “as to a miscarriage” | Paul’s self-abasing description of the abruptness/unworthiness of his own apostolic calling | ناوقت پیدا ہونے والے کی طرح | Medium — rare, difficult Greek idiom; translators must not soften Paul’s self-abasement into a neutral phrase, nor over-literalize the biological image in a way that distracts |
15:9
“For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ἐλάχιστος τῶν ἀποστόλων | elachistos tōn apostolōn | least of the apostles | smallest, most insignificant | ”least of the apostles” | Grace, not merit, grounds Paul’s apostleship (anticipates v.10) | رسولوں میں سب سے چھوٹا | Medium (baseline رسول risk) |
| ἐδίωξα τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ θεοῦ | ediōxa tēn ekklēsian tou theou | I persecuted the church of God | to pursue with hostile intent, persecute | ”persecuted the church of God” | Paul’s pre-conversion hostility to the church, contrasted with present grace-empowered ministry | خدا کی کلیسیا کو ایذا دی | Medium (baseline کلیسیا risk) |
15:10
“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| χάριτι θεοῦ | chariti theou | by the grace of God | unmerited divine favor | ”by the grace of God,” “God’s grace” | Grace as the sole ground of Paul’s transformed identity and calling — apart from merit | خدا کے فضل سے | High (baseline فضل risk — must not be read through a rahmat-plus-deeds framework) |
| εἰμι ὅ εἰμι | eimi ho eimi | I am what I am | present identity-statement | ”I am what I am” | Paul’s identity is entirely grace-constituted, not self-achieved | جو کچھ میں ہوں | Low |
| ἐκοπίασα | ekopiasa | I labored, worked hard | to toil, labor exhaustively | ”I worked harder,” “I labored more” | Grace produces, rather than excludes, vigorous effort — guards against a passive misreading of grace | زیادہ محنت کی | Medium — must not be heard as effort earning standing (re-importing works), but as grace’s fruit |
| ἡ χάρις ἡ σὺν ἐμοί | hē charis hē syn emoi | the grace with me | grace as an active, present co-working power | ”the grace of God that is with me,” “God’s grace working in me” | Grace as ongoing empowering presence, not a one-time past event only | خدا کا فضل جو میرے ساتھ ہے | High (baseline فضل risk) |
15:11
“Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.”
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| κηρύσσομεν | kēryssomen | we proclaim, we preach | herald’s public proclamation | ”we preach,” “we proclaim” | Unified apostolic proclamation regardless of which apostle speaks — the message, not the messenger, is authoritative | منادی کرتے ہیں | Medium — new term for this curriculum (κηρύσσω), distinct in nuance from εὐαγγελίζομαι (v.1); conveys official, authoritative public heralding |
| ἐπιστεύσατε | episteusate | you believed | (repeated from v.2) | — | Closes the ring: the Corinthians’ faith rests on this single, shared, apostolic gospel | ایمان لائے | High (baseline ایمان risk) |
Core Passage Synthesis
1 Corinthians 15:1–11 is the pipeline’s most concentrated statement of the resurrection_of_christ doctrine already flagged Critical in the baseline, but it adds two dimensions the Romans material did not foreground to the same degree:
- An evidentiary, eyewitness-chain structure (ὤφθη repeated five times, named individuals and a 500-person group) that functions apologetically, anticipating and countering a “resurrection did not really happen” reading — directly relevant to Qur’an 4:157’s denial of the crucifixion (and by extension the reality the resurrection presupposes).
- A formal tradition-transmission formula (παρέδωκα/παρέλαβον) marking vv.3-5 as a fixed, pre-Pauline creedal core — useful for teaching that this is not one apostle’s private theological development but the church’s earliest common confession.
Every segment in this passage touching θάνατος/ἐτάφη/ἐγήγερται/ὤφθη must be automatically routed to human theologian review, per the existing baseline escalation rule for crucifixion/resurrection/messianic material, extended here explicitly to burial and appearance language as the concrete evidentiary planks the doctrine stands on.
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 — Divisions, the Cross, and the Wisdom of God
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| κλητὸς ἀπόστολος | klētos apostolos | called apostle | summoned to apostolic office | ”called to be an apostle” | Reuses baseline called/apostle senses (1:1) | بلایا گیا رسول | High/Medium (baseline) |
| σχίσματα | schismata | tears, divisions | factions, splits, rifts | ”divisions,” “factions,” “quarrels” | Corinthian party-loyalty around teachers (Paul, Apollos, Cephas) rather than Christ | تفرقے | Medium — new term; standard word for schism/faction, no significant syncretism risk, but doctrinally load-bearing for the whole letter’s occasion |
| σοφία (τοῦ κόσμου) | sophia (tou kosmou) | wisdom (of the world) | human cleverness, rhetorical/philosophical skill, in contrast to God’s wisdom | ”wisdom of the world,” “worldly wisdom” | The cross overturns human wisdom-standards entirely | دنیا کی حکمت | High — new term; حکمت is a major, positively-loaded Islamic theological category (Allah’s hikmah; also a title of the Qur’an as “the Book of Wisdom”); must be anchored specifically to worldly/human wisdom being overturned by the cross, not read as devaluing حکمت as such |
| σοφία θεοῦ | sophia theou | wisdom of God | God’s redemptive wisdom, embodied in the cross | ”wisdom of God,” “God’s wisdom” | The cross itself — an apparent folly — is in fact God’s saving wisdom | خدا کی حکمت | Critical — same term, opposite pole; must be tied explicitly and repeatedly to the cross (صلیب) so it is not heard as generic praise of divine hikmah in the Islamic theological sense, which does not include a crucified Messiah |
| μωρία | mōria | foolishness, folly | absurdity, foolishness | ”foolishness,” “folly” | The cross is “foolishness” to those without faith — a deliberate, ironic reversal | بیوقوفی / حماقت | Medium — must retain Paul’s ironic, provocative force; do not soften into a neutral “difficult teaching” |
| σταυρός | stauros | cross, stake | instrument of Roman execution; by metonymy, the crucifixion event and message | ”the cross,” “the message of the cross” | The center of the gospel and, per baseline, the point of sharpest collision with Qur’an 4:157 | صلیب (baseline, reused exactly) | Critical (baseline cross_crucifixion) |
| δύναμις θεοῦ | dynamis theou | power of God | God’s saving, effective might | ”power of God” | The cross, though weakness by worldly standards, is God’s saving power | خدا کی قدرت (baseline, reused exactly) | High (baseline power_of_god) |
| καυχάομαι | kauchaomai | to boast | to take pride in, glory in | ”boast,” “take pride” | Corinthian boasting in status/wisdom/teachers is corrected: “let him who boasts, boast in the Lord” | فخر کرنا | Low-Medium — standard term; theological point is the object of boasting (self vs. Lord), not the word itself |
| κοινωνία τοῦ υἱοῦ | koinōnia tou huiou | fellowship of the Son | shared participation with Christ | ”fellowship with his Son,” “called into fellowship” | Reuses baseline fellowship (رفاقت) applied specifically to union with the Son | اُس کے بیٹے کی رفاقت | High — combines baseline رفاقت (Low) with باپ کے بیٹے/خدا کا بیٹا sonship risk (Critical); the sonship annotation requirement applies here even though this is a fellowship-verse, not a Christology-proof-text |
Chapter 2 — The Spirit, Human Wisdom, and the Mind of Christ
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| πνευματικός | pneumatikos | spiritual (person) | one who has and discerns by the Spirit | ”the spiritual person,” “spiritual people” | Those indwelt by the Spirit, able to discern spiritual truth | روحانی انسان | Medium — new term; keep anchored to Spirit-indwelling, not a vague “religious/mystical” category |
| ψυχικός | psychikos | soulish, natural (person) | one without the Spirit, relying on unaided human faculties | ”the natural person,” “the unspiritual man” | The unregenerate person who cannot receive Spirit-given truth | نفسانی انسان | High — flagged with the same caution as the Galatians جسم/نفس note: نفسانی risks importing the Sufi nafs-discipline framework (in which nafs is a moral faculty to be trained/purified) rather than Paul’s sharper category of one who altogether lacks the Spirit; a clarifying note is recommended at first occurrence |
| μυστήριον | mystērion | mystery, hidden thing now revealed | a previously hidden divine plan now disclosed in the gospel | ”mystery,” “secret,” “hidden wisdom” | God’s wisdom, once hidden, now revealed in Christ crucified | راز | Medium — new term; distinguish from Sufi/mystical “hidden knowledge” categories (kashf, haqiqah, esoteric secret attained through spiritual discipline); this μυστήριον is disclosed by revelation to all believers, not an elite attainment |
| νοῦς Χριστοῦ | nous Christou | mind of Christ | Christ’s own perspective/discernment, given to believers by the Spirit | ”the mind of Christ” | Believers, taught by the Spirit, share Christ’s own understanding | مسیح کا ذہن | Medium — new term, low intrinsic risk, but doctrinally significant (union with Christ’s own perspective, not merely imitation) |
| ἀποκαλύπτω (via τὸ πνεῦμα) | apokalyptō | to reveal, uncover | disclose what was hidden | ”revealed,” “revealed to us through the Spirit” | Revelation category reused from Galatians (مکاشفہ); here applied to the Spirit’s ongoing revealing work in believers generally, not only apostolic commissioning | مکاشفہ | Medium (baseline term, extended sense) |
Chapter 3 — Divisions Continued; the Church as Field, Building, Temple
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| θεμέλιος | themelios | foundation | base, groundwork | ”foundation” | Christ alone as the church’s only legitimate foundation (3:11) | بنیاد | Low |
| ναός θεοῦ | naos theou | temple of God | sanctuary, dwelling place of deity | ”temple of God,” “God’s temple” | The church corporately (and, in 6:19, the believer individually) as God’s dwelling place — replacing the Jerusalem temple, not a mosque or shrine | خدا کا ہیکل | High — new term; ہیکل is the established Urdu Bible term for the Jerusalem temple; must never be rendered as مسجد (mosque), which imports an entirely different religious-institutional category, per the baseline’s church/kingdom cautions |
| μισθός | misthos | wage, reward | payment, recompense | ”reward,” “wages” | Reward for faithful ministry-labor, distinguished from salvation itself, which is not earned | اجر / انعام | Medium — must be kept distinct from نجات (salvation), which is never earned; مسیح’s ministers are rewarded for faithful service after salvation is already secured by grace, not rewarded into salvation |
| πῦρ δοκιμάσει | pyr dokimasei | fire will test | testing/refining by fire | ”the fire will test,” “tested by fire” | Eschatological testing of ministry-work’s quality, not of personal salvation status | آگ آزمائے گی | Low-Medium |
Chapter 4 — Apostles as Stewards and Servants
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ὑπηρέτης | hypēretēs | servant, assistant | subordinate helper (originally a rower) | “servant,” “assistant” | Apostles as Christ’s subordinate servants, not independent authorities | خادم | Low |
| οἰκονόμος | oikonomos | household manager, steward | one entrusted with another’s resources | ”steward,” “manager” | Apostolic ministry as entrusted stewardship of God’s mysteries, accountable to God, not human approval | مختار / نگہبان | Medium — new term; note possible overlap in sense with the Galatians baseline’s نگہبان (guardian/paidagogos), though the underlying Greek and theological point differ (household steward vs. temporary custodial guide); use مختار as primary to avoid confusion, reserving نگہبان for the Galatians paidagogos sense |
| κρίνω | krinō | to judge | evaluate, assess, condemn | ”judge,” “pass judgment” | Human judgment of ministers is premature; final judgment belongs to the Lord | عدالت کرنا / فیصلہ کرنا | Low-Medium |
Chapter 5 — Church Discipline and Holiness
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| πορνεία | porneia | sexual immorality | any sexual activity outside marriage | ”sexual immorality,” “fornication” | The specific case (a man with his father’s wife) triggering the discipline instruction | زنا / بدکاری | High — established Urdu Bible usage renders this زنا, but زنا is also the precise Islamic hudud-law criminal category with its own evidentiary requirements (four witnesses) and prescribed corporal punishment; church discipline in 1 Cor 5 (removal from fellowship, restorative in aim) must be clearly distinguished from that criminal-legal framework — this is a pastoral, not judicial, category. بدکاری may be preferred in explanatory material to reduce the collision. |
| ζύμη | zymē | leaven, yeast | a small corrupting agent that spreads through the whole | ”leaven,” “yeast” | Uncorrected sin corrupts the whole church community, as leaven spreads through dough | خمیر | Low-Medium — standard image; note conceptual (not legal) overlap with the Islamic dietary category of unleavened/leavened food is minimal and not a collision risk here, since Paul’s use is purely metaphorical |
| ἐξαίρατε (τὸν πονηρόν) | exairate | remove, take out | expel, purge | ”remove,” “purge,” “expel” | Formal removal of an unrepentant member from the congregation | خارج کر دینا | Medium — new term for formal church discipline; must be framed as a restorative, congregational act, not a punitive civil sentence |
| παραδοῦναι τῷ Σατανᾷ | paradounai tō Satana | to hand over to Satan | formal exclusion from the protected community | ”deliver over to Satan,” “hand him over to Satan” | Severe formal discipline, removing the protective covering of the church community — aimed at eventual restoration (cf. 2 Cor 2) | شیطان کے حوالے کر دینا | High — must not be read as a magical curse-formula; it is a description of removing someone from the church’s spiritual protection, with restoration as the ultimate goal |
Chapter 6 — The Body, Lawsuits, and Sexual Ethics
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| κρίνεσθαι (ἐπὶ τῶν ἀδίκων) | krinesthai | to be judged, to litigate | to go to law, bring lawsuits | ”go to law,” “take to court” | Believers suing one another before secular courts, rather than resolving disputes within the church | مقدمہ بازی کرنا | Medium |
| σῶμα | sōma | body | the physical body — here, a positive theological category | ”body,” “the body” | Distinct term from σάρξ (“flesh,” rendered جسم per the Galatians baseline). The believer’s σῶμα is “a member of Christ” (6:15) and “a temple of the Holy Spirit” (6:19), destined for resurrection | بدن | High — CRITICAL TERMINOLOGY NOTE: this Language Package renders σάρξ (flesh, in its Galatians self-reliant/sinful-nature sense) as جسم per the existing baseline. σῶμα must NOT also be rendered جسم, or the letter’s positive body-theology (temple, member of Christ, resurrection body) will collapse into the same word used for the negative “flesh” category, destroying an important distinction Paul himself maintains. This Language Package therefore introduces بدن as the dedicated Urdu term for σῶμα throughout 1 Corinthians (chs. 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15) |
| ναὸς τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος | naos tou hagiou pneumatos | temple of the Holy Spirit | the believer’s body as God’s dwelling place | ”temple of the Holy Spirit” | Individual application of the ch. 3 corporate temple image; grounds sexual ethics in the Spirit’s indwelling presence | روح القدس کا ہیکل | Critical — compounds baseline روح القدس risk (Quranic ruh al-qudus/Jibreel identification) with the ہیکل caution above; must affirm the Spirit’s full divine personhood indwelling believers bodily, a claim with no Islamic theological counterpart |
| κολλώμενος (τῇ πόρνῃ) | kollōmenos | joined, glued to | to be intimately united with | ”joined to a prostitute,” “united with” | Sexual union creates a real, not merely symbolic, “one flesh” bond (quoting Genesis) | جڑ جانا / ملنا | Medium |
| μία σάρξ | mia sarx | one flesh | a Genesis quotation describing marital/sexual union | ”one flesh” | Note: this is σάρξ, not σῶμα — rendered consistently with the جسم baseline choice | ایک جسم | Medium — must remain consistent with جسم as the established rendering of σάρξ; do not substitute بدن here |
| ἠγιάσθητε, ἐδικαιώθητε, ἀπελούσασθε | hēgiasthēte, edikaiōthēte, apelousasthe | you were sanctified, justified, washed | a three-part conversion formula | ”washed, sanctified, justified” | Full conversion described as cleansing, holiness-consecration, and forensic acquittal together | دھوئے گئے، پاک کیے گئے، راستباز ٹھہرائے گئے | Critical — the middle and third terms reuse baseline پاک/تقدیس and راستباز ٹھہرایا جانا exactly; دھوئے گئے (washed) is new and must be distinguished from Islamic ritual ablution (wudu/ghusl), per the same caution already recorded for پاک/طاہر in the baseline |
Chapter 7 — Marriage, Singleness, and Calling
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| γάμος | gamos | marriage | the marital union/institution | ”marriage,” “to marry” | Marriage as good, but not obligatory or superior to singleness | شادی | Medium — low lexical risk, but note Islamic marriage (nikah) is a distinct contractual-legal category (mahr, specific witnessed contract); Paul’s instructions should not be assumed to map onto that legal framework |
| παρθένος | parthenos | virgin | an unmarried, sexually chaste person (also used of unmarried daughters generally) | “virgin,” “the unmarried” | Paul’s own commended state; singleness as a valid, even advantageous, calling for undivided devotion | کنواری / کنوارا | Low |
| χωρίζω / χωρισθῆναι | chōrizō | to separate, divide | to divorce, separate | ”separate,” “divorce” | Instructions on divorce, especially in mixed believer/unbeliever marriages | جدا ہونا / طلاق | High — طلاق is the specific, procedurally defined Islamic legal term for divorce (unilateral pronouncement, iddah waiting period, specific witnessed procedure); Paul’s pastoral instruction here is not a legal code of that kind. Prefer جدا ہونا (to separate) in doctrinal exposition, while acknowledging طلاق will be the term readers use for the civil act itself |
| ἄπιστος | apistos | unbelieving, faithless | without faith, non-believer | ”unbeliever,” “unbelieving spouse” | The believing spouse’s situation in a religiously mixed marriage | غیر ایمان دار | High (baseline ایمان risk — object of faith must remain Christ-specific even in this negative form) |
| χάρισμα | charisma | gift | a grace-given ability or state | ”gift,” “gift from God” | Both marriage and singleness are, in different ways, χαρίσματα — Spirit/grace-given, not self-achieved states | خدا کی نعمت | Medium — reuses the conceptual root of baseline روحانی نعمتیں (spiritual gifts), applied here to a life-state rather than a ministry-function; keep the “unearned, grace-given” sense forward |
| περιτομή / ἀκροβυστία | peritomē / akrobystia | circumcision / uncircumcision | (7:19) “neither counts for anything; keeping the commandments of God is what matters" | "circumcision… uncircumcision” | Direct reuse of the Galatians principle inside a different practical context (marriage/calling chapter) | ختنہ / نامختون (baseline, reused exactly) | Critical (baseline circumcision risk — mandatory theologian review, per Galatians precedent, applies to this occurrence as well) |
Chapter 8 — Idol Meat, Conscience, and the Confession of One God and One Lord
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| εἰδωλόθυτον | eidōlothyton | meat sacrificed to idols | food ritually offered to a pagan deity, then sold/eaten | ”food offered to idols,” “idol meat” | The specific Corinthian controversy: may believers eat meat that passed through pagan temple ritual? | بتوں کو چڑھایا ہوا گوشت | Critical — this is a STRUCTURAL, not merely lexical, parallel to halal/haram dietary classification in Islamic law (meat’s ritual status determining its lawfulness for consumption); must be handled as comparative theology, explaining that Paul’s issue is the meat’s association with idol worship and its effect on conscience, categorically different in mechanism from halal slaughter law, even though the practical question (“can I eat this meat?”) will feel structurally familiar to readers |
| συνείδησις | syneidēsis | conscience | the inner faculty of moral self-awareness | ”conscience” | The weaker believer’s conscience must not be needlessly wounded by the stronger believer’s liberty | ضمیر | Medium — genuinely shared, low-risk vocabulary (also a recognized Islamic ethical-psychological category); the risk is doctrinal application (protecting others’ consciences), not translation of the word itself |
| γνῶσις | gnōsis | knowledge | intellectual understanding, insight | ”knowledge" | "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (8:1) — correct doctrine without love is dangerous | علم | Medium — علم is a highly esteemed Islamic category (seeking ilm is a religious duty); the contrast Paul draws is not against knowledge as such but against knowledge divorced from love, a nuance that must be preserved carefully |
| ἐξουσία | exousia | authority, right | permission, liberty, right to act | ”right,” “liberty,” “authority” | The “right” to eat idol meat, which must be voluntarily limited for the sake of others | اختیار / حق | Medium — new term, distinct from آزادی (eleutheria/freedom, per the Galatians baseline); ἐξουσία here is a permitted right that may be voluntarily set aside, not the deeper freedom-from-law-and-sin category |
| εἷς θεός… καὶ εἷς κύριος | heis theos… kai heis kyrios | one God… and one Lord | (8:6) Paul’s confessional counter-formula to pagan polytheism | ”one God, the Father… and one Lord, Jesus Christ” | A foundational monotheistic confession that simultaneously affirms the unique Lordship of Jesus alongside the Father | ایک ہی خدا… اور ایک ہی خداوند | CRITICAL — new doctrinal flashpoint unique to this book: the confessional form (“there is one…”) closely echoes the shahada’s tawhid structure, which could be misread either (a) as simple agreement with Islamic monotheism, eliding the Trinity, or (b) if not carefully taught, as implying two separate gods (ditheism). Must be taught explicitly alongside Trinitarian doctrine: one God in three Persons, the Father and the Son both fully within that one divine identity — neither a bare tawhid restatement nor a two-gods claim. Mandatory theologian review. |
Chapter 9 — Apostolic Rights, Reward, and Self-Discipline
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ἐξουσία (τοῦ μὴ χρήσασθαι) | exousia | right (not to use) | (as ch. 8) apostolic right to material support | ”right,” “authority” | Paul’s voluntary relinquishing of a legitimate right for the gospel’s sake | اختیار / حق | Medium (as ch. 8) |
| ἀγών / τρέχω | agōn / trechō | contest, race / to run | athletic-competition imagery | ”race,” “run the race” | Disciplined Christian living compared to an athlete’s training | دوڑ | Low |
| στέφανος | stephanos | wreath, crown | victor’s prize (perishable laurel vs. imperishable heavenly reward) | “crown,” “wreath,” “prize” | Contrast between a perishable athletic prize and the imperishable reward of faithful ministry | تاج | Low-Medium |
| ὑπωπιάζω (τὸ σῶμα) | hypōpiazō | to strike under the eye, subdue | discipline severely, bring under control | ”discipline my body,” “buffet my body” | Rigorous self-discipline of the σῶμα (بدن) to remain fit for ministry — not ascetic self-punishment as an end in itself | اپنے بدن کو تابع کرنا | Medium — must not be read as merit-earning asceticism (works-at-judgment adjacent risk) nor conflated with Sufi ascetic bodily-discipline practice aimed at nearness to God |
Chapter 10 — Idolatry, the Table of the Lord, and Communal Warning
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| εἰδωλολατρία | eidōlolatria | idol worship | the practice/sin of worshiping idols | ”idolatry” | Israel’s wilderness idolatry as a warning example for the church | بت پرستی (baseline, reused exactly from Galatians) | High (baseline works_of_the_flesh_idolatry) |
| πειρασμός | peirasmos | temptation, testing | trial, enticement to sin | ”temptation,” “trial” | God provides a way of escape from every temptation (10:13) | آزمائش | Low-Medium |
| κοινωνία (τοῦ αἵματος/σώματος) | koinōnia | fellowship, participation | shared partaking | ”participation,” “fellowship” | Participation in Christ’s body and blood through the Supper — reuses baseline رفاقت concept but with sacramental specificity | رفاقت / شرکت | High — baseline رفاقت (Low risk generally) escalates here because it is applied to sacramental participation in Christ’s body and blood, not merely social fellowship; see ch. 11 blood/wine notes below |
| τράπεζα κυρίου / τράπεζα δαιμονίων | trapeza kyriou / trapeza daimoniōn | table of the Lord / table of demons | a place of ritual, covenantal participation | ”the Lord’s table,” “the table of demons” | Sharp either/or: one cannot participate in both pagan sacrificial worship and the Lord’s Supper | خداوند کی میز / بدروحوں کی میز | High — new term بدروح (evil spirit/demon) requires comparative-theology care: distinct from, but potentially conflated with, the Islamic jinn concept in popular reception; must be clarified as a term for spiritual beings in active opposition to God, not a folk-belief category |
Chapter 11 — Head Covering, and the Lord’s Supper
This chapter contains this Language Package’s second-highest-priority new collision category (after the crucifixion itself), spanning two distinct doctrinal risks.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| κατακαλύπτω | katakalyptō | to cover down, veil | to cover the head | ”cover her head,” “have her head covered” | Paul’s instruction on women’s head covering in worship, grounded in a creation-order argument (11:3-12) | سر ڈھانپنا | CRITICAL — this instruction sits directly alongside, but is doctrinally distinct from, the live, highly contested contemporary Islamic hijab/purdah discourse (a legal-devotional obligation grounded in Qur’anic and hadith material, not in Paul’s creation-order argument). Risk runs in both directions: the passage could be wrongly used to endorse hijab as a Christian requirement, or wrongly dismissed as culturally irrelevant because “we don’t do that.” Mandatory theologian review; frame as a first-century Corinthian worship-order instruction with a creation-theology rationale, never as commentary on, endorsement of, or polemic against Islamic veiling practice specifically. |
| κεφαλή | kephalē | head | literal head; metaphorically, source/authority | ”head,” “headship" | "The head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God” (11:3) — a headship/order argument | سر / سربراہی | High — gender-authority theology is sensitive in both Christian and Muslim social contexts; must be taught with the passage’s own qualifications (11:11-12, mutual interdependence “in the Lord”) intact, not extracted as a standalone authority-hierarchy proof text |
| κυριακὸν δεῖπνον | kyriakon deipnon | the Lord’s supper | the sacred communal meal instituted by Christ | ”the Lord’s Supper” | The church’s central sacramental meal, established in the tradition Paul “received” and “delivered” (same verbs as 15:3) | خداوند کا کھانا / عشائے ربانی | Critical — عشائے ربانی is the established Urdu Christian liturgical term (parallel to “Eucharist”); low lexical risk in itself, but the entire rite’s content (bread as body, cup as blood) carries the doctrinal weight below |
| ἄρτος | artos | bread | literal bread; symbolically, Christ’s body | ”bread" | "This is my body” — the bread as a sign of Christ’s body given for believers | روٹی | Medium |
| ποτήριον | potērion | cup | drinking vessel; by metonymy, its contents (wine) | “cup,” “the cup" | "This cup is the new covenant in my blood” | پیالہ | Medium |
| αἷμα | haima | blood | literal blood; here, sacrificial/covenantal blood | ”blood,” “my blood” | Christ’s sacrificial, covenant-establishing blood, symbolically received in the cup | خون | CRITICAL — a distinct new collision category for this Language Package, comparable in severity to the crucifixion-denial risk: Qur’an 2:173, 5:3, 6:145, and 16:115 categorically prohibit the consumption of blood as unclean. Even understood symbolically/memorially (never literally, per historic Protestant Urdu church teaching), “drink of my blood” language will register as viscerally forbidden to a reader formed by this dietary law. This requires explicit sacramental/memorial framing (a sign and remembrance, not literal ingestion of blood) at every occurrence, alongside acknowledgment that even the symbolism will need careful, respectful explanation, not silent translation. Mandatory theologian review. |
| οἶνος | oinos | wine | fermented grape drink | ”wine” | The cup’s contents in the historical setting; also the subject of the Corinthians’ abuse (getting drunk, 11:21) | مے / شراب | High — wine/alcohol (khamr) is categorically prohibited in Islamic law; this compounds the blood-collision above. Sacramental use must be explained as a symbolic, church-specific practice, not a general endorsement of alcohol consumption; some pastoral contexts substitute grape juice, a translation-adjacent practice question to flag for the Cultural Context document, not a lexical fix |
| ἀνάμνησις | anamnēsis | remembrance | memorial, commemorative recollection | ”in remembrance of me” | The Supper as a repeated memorial act, not a repeated sacrifice | یادگاری / یاد میں | Medium — helps anchor the “symbolic, not literal” framing needed for the blood/wine risk above |
| διακρίνων τὸ σῶμα | diakrinōn to sōma | discerning the body | to judge rightly, distinguish, recognize appropriately | ”discerning the body,” “without recognizing the body” | Self-examination before participating, recognizing the Supper’s sacred, corporate significance | بدن کو پہچاننا / امتیاز کرنا | Medium — reuses بدن (established for σῶμα per ch. 6 note) |
Chapter 12 — Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| χαρίσματα | charismata | gifts | Spirit-given enablements | ”spiritual gifts,” “gifts” | Reuses baseline روحانی نعمتیں exactly | روحانی نعمتیں (baseline, reused exactly) | Medium (baseline spiritual_gifts) |
| Ἰησοῦς Κύριος (ὁμολογία) | Iēsous Kyrios | ”Jesus is Lord” | confessional formula | ”Jesus is Lord" | "No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (12:3) — ties directly to the baseline’s single most important confession (Romans 10:9) | یسوع خداوند ہے | Critical (baseline lordship_of_christ — must render “without qualification,” per the existing baseline validation rule, now recurring in this book) |
| βαπτίζω (ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι) | baptizō | to immerse, baptize | ritual immersion; here, Spirit-baptism into one body | ”baptized,” “baptized into one body” | All believers, regardless of background, are united into one body by one Spirit (12:13) | بپتسمہ (لینا) | High — new term for this curriculum (baptisma is not present in the Romans/Galatians baseline TM); established transliterated Urdu Christian term, low lexical risk, but must be distinguished from Islamic ritual purification (wudu/ghusl), which is repeated and works-related, whereas Christian baptism (like the Spirit-baptism in view here) is a once-for-all incorporation into Christ’s body |
| σῶμα Χριστοῦ | sōma Christou | body of Christ | the church as Christ’s organic, unified, diverse body | ”body of Christ” | The chapter’s central ecclesiological image: one body, many members, mutual interdependence | مسیح کا بدن | High — reuses بدن per the ch. 6 terminological decision; this is a distinct and important doctrinal category from کلیسیا (church, the baseline institutional/congregational term) — both are needed and must not be collapsed into one word |
| μέλος / μέλη | melos / melē | member, limb | body part | ”member,” “members” | Individual believers as differentiated, interdependent parts of the one body | اعضاء | Low |
| διακρίσεις πνευμάτων | diakriseis pneumatōn | distinguishing of spirits | discernment of spiritual sources | ”distinguishing between spirits” | A specific gift for discerning true from false spiritual activity — relevant to the بدروح caution in ch. 10 | روحوں کی تمیز | Medium |
| ἰάματα | iamata | healings | acts/gifts of healing | ”gifts of healing” | Spirit-given healing ability | شفا (کی نعمتیں) | Medium — شفا is genuinely shared vocabulary (a recognized Quranic term for healing, e.g. Qur’an 17:82); low syncretism risk, but note the shared root as a potential bridge point for teaching, not a collision |
Chapter 13 — Love as the Greater Way
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ἀγάπη | agapē | love | self-giving, unconditional, covenantal love | ”love,” “charity” (older translations) | Without ἀγάπη, even the most impressive spiritual gifts and sacrifices are worthless (13:1-3); ἀγάπη is patient, kind, not self-seeking, and never ends | محبت | CRITICAL — the single most important new term in this book outside the resurrection material. محبت is broad, shared vocabulary across Urdu religious and literary registers: it carries strong associations with Sufi devotional ishq/mahabbat (mystical love of the Divine attained through spiritual discipline), with romantic-poetic love (the dominant register in Urdu ghazal literature), and with generic compassion. Paul’s ἀγάπη is none of these primarily: it is a specific, self-sacrificial, covenantal, other-directed love modeled on Christ’s own love (cf. Rom 5:8, reused conceptually here), given as fruit of the Spirit, not attained through ascetic discipline or romantic feeling. Every doctrinally weighted occurrence requires contextual anchoring (God’s love in Christ; love as the “greater way” than gifts) so it is not assimilated to either the Sufi mystical-love register or the secular-romantic register. |
| μακροθυμεῖ, χρηστεύεται | makrothymei, chrēsteuetai | is patient, is kind | descriptive verbs of ἀγάπη’s character | ”is patient… is kind” | The concrete behavioral content of ἀγάπη, guarding against a purely emotional or abstract reading | تحمل کرنا، مہربان ہونا | Low |
| ζηλοῖ, περπερεύεται, φυσιοῦται | zēloi, perpereuetai, physioutai | envies, boasts, is puffed up | negated qualities of ἀγάπη | ”envies… boasts… is arrogant” | ἀγάπη’s absence of self-interest, contrasted implicitly with the Corinthians’ own boasting/factionalism from ch. 1 | حسد کرنا، شیخی بگھارنا، مغرور ہونا | Low |
| τὸ τέλειον | to teleion | the complete, perfect thing | maturity, completion | ”the perfect,” “when the perfect comes” | Eschatological completeness, when partial gifts (prophecy, knowledge) give way to full, unmediated knowledge of God | کامل / تکمیل | Low-Medium |
Chapter 14 — Tongues, Prophecy, and Order in Worship
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| γλῶσσα (γλῶσσαι) | glōssa | tongue(s) | literal tongue/language; here, a Spirit-given gift of ecstatic or unknown-language speech | ”tongues,” “speaking in tongues” | A genuine but regulated spiritual gift, requiring interpretation for corporate benefit | زبانیں | Medium — must be distinguished as a specific, regulated spiritual phenomenon, not confused with ordinary multilingualism, nor sensationalized; low syncretism risk but real potential for confusion without context |
| προφητεία | prophēteia | prophecy | Spirit-inspired declaration | ”prophecy” | Reuses baseline پیشن گوئی exactly; preferred by Paul over uninterpreted tongues for corporate edification | پیشن گوئی (baseline, reused exactly) | Low (baseline prophecy) |
| ἑρμηνεία | hermēneia | interpretation | translation/explanation of an unclear utterance | ”interpretation” | The companion gift required to make tongues intelligible and edifying to the church | تفسیر / ترجمانی | Low-Medium |
| οἰκοδομή | oikodomē | building up | edification, construction | ”build up,” “edification” | The controlling purpose of all worship-gifts: the whole church’s benefit, not individual display | تعمیر | Low (reuses the conceptual root of baseline mutual_edification) |
| εὐσχημόνως καὶ κατὰ τάξιν | euschēmonōs kai kata taxin | decently and in order | fittingly, properly, in sequence | ”in a fitting and orderly way,” “decently and in order” | The chapter’s closing principle governing all the above: worship must be intelligible, edifying, and orderly, not chaotic | شائستگی اور ترتیب سے | Low |
| σιγάτωσαν (αἱ γυναῖκες) | sigatōsan | let them be silent | to keep silence, refrain from speaking | ”let the women keep silent” (14:34-35) | A disputed, context-dependent instruction on women’s speech in the gathered assembly | عورتیں خاموش رہیں | High — a sensitive gender-role instruction; must be handled, like the ch. 11 head-covering material, with explicit exegetical care regarding its scope (this specific congregational setting/practice, per most interpreters, not a universal prohibition on women’s speech or ministry generally) and cross-referenced with ch. 11’s veiling material and ch. 12’s gift-distribution, which does not exclude women. Flag for theologian review alongside ch. 11. |
Chapter 15 — Resurrection of Christ and of Believers (Remainder of the Chapter Beyond the Core Passage)
Verses 1–11 are treated in full above. The remainder of the chapter (vv. 12–58) develops the doctrine’s implications and introduces the following additional load-bearing terms:
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| ἀπαρχή | aparchē | firstfruits | the first, representative portion of a harvest, guaranteeing the rest | ”firstfruits” | Christ’s resurrection as the “firstfruits” guaranteeing believers’ future resurrection (15:20, 23) | پہلا پھل | Medium-High — the typological logic (Christ’s resurrection as the guarantee-pattern for believers’ future resurrection) is the doctrinal engine of this passage and must be preserved intact |
| ὁ ἔσχατος Ἀδάμ | ho eschatos Adam | the last Adam | Christ as the second/final representative head of humanity, contrasted with the first Adam | ”the last Adam” | Federal-headship typology: as in Adam all die, so in Christ all (who are his) will be made alive (15:22, 45) | آخری آدم | High — the theological category of “federal headship” (corporate representation) has no ready Islamic-theological counterpart and must be explained, not assumed familiar; reuses proper name آدم |
| ἀφθαρσία / ἄφθαρτος | aphtharsia / aphthartos | incorruption, imperishability | not subject to decay | ”imperishable,” “immortality” | The resurrection body’s new, permanent, decay-proof nature | لافانی / غیر فانی | Medium |
| σῶμα πνευματικόν | sōma pneumatikon | spiritual body | a real, physical, yet Spirit-transformed resurrection body | ”spiritual body” | Not a disembodied ghost-state, but a transformed, still-bodily existence — reuses بدن per established terminology | روحانی بدن | High — must resist two opposite errors: reducing the resurrection to a purely non-physical/spiritual-only survival (contradicting the whole chapter’s bodily emphasis), and treating “spiritual body” as merely the old body unchanged; also, note this doctrine of the general future bodily resurrection of believers is, unusually within this Language Package, a point of genuine bridge with the Islamic doctrine of qiyamat (bodily resurrection at the end of time is affirmed in both traditions) — though the specific mechanism (union with the risen Christ as “firstfruits,” applying to “those who belong to Christ,” 15:23) and its christological ground still require careful distinction from the general, universal resurrection-for-judgment of all humanity in Islamic eschatology |
| κέντρον τοῦ θανάτου | kentron tou thanatou | sting of death | the piercing, fatal power of death | ”the sting of death” | Death’s power to harm is nullified by Christ’s resurrection victory (15:55-56) | موت کا ڈنک | Low-Medium |
| νῖκος | nikos | victory | triumph, conquest | ”victory" | "Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (15:57) | فتح | Medium — فتح carries some historical-martial resonance in South Asian Muslim discourse (e.g., “Fatah Makkah,” the conquest of Mecca); should be clearly framed as spiritual victory over sin and death, not military/triumphalist language, to avoid an unintended connotation |
| μυστήριον (15:51) | mystērion | mystery | (as ch. 2) hidden truth now disclosed | ”mystery,” “I tell you a mystery” | The transformation of living believers at Christ’s return, previously undisclosed | راز | Medium (as ch. 2 note) |
Chapter 16 — Practical Instructions, Collection, and Closing Greetings
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Urdu Rendering | Risk |
|---|
| λογεία | logeia | collection | a gathered offering | ”the collection,” “the offering” | Practical instructions for gathering financial support for the Jerusalem church | چندہ | Low |
| φίλημα ἅγιον | philēma hagion | holy kiss | a formal greeting-kiss among believers | ”holy kiss” | A first-century cultural greeting convention, carrying the baseline پاک sense of set-apart, consecrated affection among believers, not romantic or ritual-purity connotation | پاک بوسہ | Medium — the doctrinal content (holy، set apart) is low-risk, but the practice of a kiss-greeting across genders raises a cultural-adaptation question (not a translation-word question) that should be flagged for the Cultural Context document; many contemporary Urdu-speaking congregations substitute a culturally equivalent greeting (embrace, handshake, “peace be with you”) while preserving the “holy” qualifier |
| μαρανα θα | marana tha | ”Our Lord, come!” | Aramaic imperative/vocative retained untranslated by Paul | ”Maranatha,” “Come, Lord!” | An early, spontaneous liturgical exclamation of longing for Christ’s return — reuses the baseline’s Abba-retention principle (preserve Aramaic transliteration for intimacy/antiquity) | مارانا تھا (کے ساتھ وضاحتی نوٹ: “ہمارے خداوند، آ!”) | Medium — per the baseline’s ابّا precedent, retain the Aramaic transliteration rather than only translating it, to preserve the phrase’s ancient, cross-generational liturgical character; always gloss at first occurrence |
Chapter 16 note: beyond the terms above, chapter 16 otherwise reuses established baseline vocabulary (شکرگزاری, رفاقت, کلیسیا, نعمت/فضل in the closing benediction) and introduces no further new theological categories.
Summary of Structural Findings for Phase 1
- Reused-term integrity: All Romans/Galatians baseline terms occurring in 1 Corinthians (گناہ, فضل, ایمان, نجات, قیامت, خداوند, خدا کا بیٹا, مسیح, یسوع, خدا, روح القدس, پاک, مقدس لوگ, تقدیس, کلیسیا, رسول, بلایا گیا/بلاہٹ, غیر قوموں, جلال, خدا کی قدرت, رفاقت, آزادی, جسم, صلیب/مصلوب, بت پرستی, شکرگزاری, خدا کی بادشاہی, شریعت, عہد, ختنہ/نامختون, مکاشفہ) are preserved exactly, with risk tiers unchanged from baseline.
- New terminological distinction required: σάρξ (جسم, per Galatians baseline) and σῶμα (بدن, newly introduced here) must remain two separate Urdu words throughout this curriculum; conflating them would erase Paul’s own body-theology in 1 Cor 6, 9, 12, and 15.
- Two new Critical collision categories unique to this book: (a) the blood/wine content of the Lord’s Supper (ch. 11) against Islamic dietary prohibition; (b) the head-covering/women’s-silence material (chs. 11, 14) against contemporary, live hijab/purdah discourse. Both require mandatory theologian review, at the same tier as circumcision in Galatians.
- One genuine doctrinal bridge unique to this book: the general future bodily resurrection of believers (ch. 15) is closer to Islamic qiyamat doctrine than most other doctrines in this Language Package, and should be taught partly as common ground, with careful distinction of mechanism and scope.
- One new confessional flashpoint: 1 Cor 8:6’s “one God… one Lord” formula requires explicit Trinitarian framing to avoid being misread either as tawhid-agreement or as ditheism.
- Love (ἀγάπη/محبت, ch. 13) is the single most important new non-collision-category term in the book and requires sustained contextual anchoring throughout, given its broad and religiously-loaded semantic field in Urdu.
