Critical Risk Terms
Circumcision
Approved rendering: ختنہ
Transliteration: khatnah
Doctrine: Circumcision and the New Creation
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 2:11 uses this term METAPHORICALLY (‘circumcision made without hands’) — the requirement-vs-practice distinction still applies with added nuance since the word is non-literal here. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.
Cross Crucifixion
Approved rendering: صلیب / مصلوب
Transliteration: ṣalīb / maṣlūb
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:20 (‘blood of his cross’) and 2:14 (‘nailed to the cross’) both presuppose the historical crucifixion Qur’an 4:157 denies. Automatic mandatory theologian flag, every occurrence, no exceptions — the single highest-priority standing escalation rule in this Language Package, doubly load-bearing in this letter since two distinct doctrines (cosmic reconciliation, cancellation of the legal record) depend on it within four verses.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: قیامت
Transliteration: qiyāmat
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: پنر جنم
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER used bare in Colossians — always combined with the mandatory qualifying phrase مُردوں میں سے جی اُٹھنا (see firstborn_from_the_dead and buried_and_raised_with_christ entries below) to distinguish Christ’s own unique, prior resurrection from the general end-times resurrection (qiyamat) Islam affirms.
God
Approved rendering: خدا
Transliteration: k͟hudā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: اللہ
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Never اللہ, per the baseline’s Khuda-tradition choice.
Jesus
Approved rendering: یسوع
Transliteration: yasū’
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: عیسیٰ
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used consistently as یسوع مسیح throughout Colossians; never bare عیسیٰ.
Lord
Approved rendering: خداوند
Transliteration: k͟hudāvand
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: مالک, آقا
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 3:17-24 uses خداوند repeatedly in application to household-code service (‘serving the Lord Christ’).
Son Of God
Approved rendering: خدا کا بیٹا
Transliteration: k͟hudā kā beṭā
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ابن اللہ
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Underlies Colossians 1:13 (‘kingdom of the Son’), 1:15, 17 (firstborn, pre-existence). Every occurrence requires the eternal-not-begotten clarifying note per the baseline’s standing rule — the single most important recurring annotation requirement, intensified in this letter by 1:15-17’s compression.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: روح القدس
Transliteration: rūḥ al-qudus
Doctrine: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:8 (‘love in the Spirit’).
Messiah
Approved rendering: مسیح
Transliteration: masīḥ
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used throughout as یسوع مسیح; content behind the title (eternal Son, full deity bodily, died and rose) goes well beyond Quranic al-Masih.
Father
Approved rendering: باپ
Transliteration: bāp
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:2, 12; 3:17. Distinguish from the human-father household-code sense at 3:21 (see do_not_provoke_children below).
Image Of God
Approved rendering: صورت
Transliteration: sūrat
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:15. Christ as the visible, exact, eternal manifestation of the invisible God — not a likeness among others. Collides directly with tawhid’s rejection of any visible representation of Allah (Qur’an 112); a contested hadith (‘Allah created Adam in His sūrah’) is a double-edged bridge, useful for opening conversation but risky if taken to license anthropomorphism. Reused at 3:10 in a DIFFERENT (imago Dei, derivative) sense — must be explicitly distinguished each time from this christological sense. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Firstborn Of All Creation
Approved rendering: پہلوٹھا
Transliteration: pahlauṭhā
Doctrine: Sonship and Eternal Pre-existence of Christ
Original: πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:15. Established Urdu Bible term (Exodus usage) for firstborn, here a RANK/inheritance term (cf. Psalm 89:27 LXX), NOT an origin-in-time term. Every occurrence must be paired with 1:16’s clarification that all things were created THROUGH him, not that he is among created things — misreading this as origin-in-time would ironically concede the Islamic position that Isa is a created being. Reused at 1:18 as firstborn_from_the_dead (separate entry). Mandatory theologian review.
All Things Created In Him
Approved rendering: اُس میں سب چیزیں پیدا ہوئیں
Transliteration: us meñ sab chīzeñ paidā hu’īñ
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: ἐν αὐτῷ ἐκτίσθη τὰ πάντα
Category: Creation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:16. Direct attribution of creative agency to Christ — the single most direct creation-agency collision in the letter, since al-Khāliq (Creator) is an exclusive divine title in Islamic theology. Must never be softened to ‘through him God created’ in a way reducing Christ to a mere instrument — the Greek grammar assigns him a constitutive role. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Through Him And For Him
Approved rendering: اُسی کے وسیلے سے اور اُسی کے لیے
Transliteration: usī ke wasīle se aur usī ke li’e
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: διὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτόν
Category: Creation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:16. Doxological formula elsewhere reserved for God alone (cf. Romans 11:36); applying it specifically to Christ is the doctrinal point and must not be diluted into a merely instrumental reading.
Before All Things
Approved rendering: سب چیزوں سے پہلے
Transliteration: sab chīzoñ se pahle
Doctrine: Sonship and Eternal Pre-existence of Christ
Original: πρὸ πάντων
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:17. Direct pre-existence and eternality claim. Reinforces the eternal-Sonship annotation already mandatory in the baseline for خدا کا بیٹا; must be read together with, not apart from, that note.
Holds All Things Together
Approved rendering: اُسی میں قائم رہتی ہیں
Transliteration: usī meñ qā’im rahtī haiñ
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: قیوم (rejected as too baldly asserting the exclusive divine title al-Qayyum in a single loaded word)
Original: τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν
Category: Creation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:17. Functionally equivalent to the divine attribute of sustaining/preserving all things — exclusively Allah’s prerogative in Islamic theology as al-Qayyum. Must not be softened to a vague ‘everything is connected to him.’ Descriptive compound deliberately chosen over the single Arabic-derived noun to give room for explanatory teaching. Mandatory theologian review.
Firstborn From The Dead
Approved rendering: مُردوں میں سے جی اُٹھنے والا پہلوٹھا
Transliteration: murdoñ meñ se jī uṭhne wālā pahlauṭhā
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ as Firstborn from the Dead
Original: πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν
Category: Eschatology
EXTENDS baseline resurrection entry. Colossians 1:18. Must never stand as bare قیامت, which risks conflation with the general end-times resurrection all humanity awaits per Islamic eschatology (a doctrine Islam affirms, unlike the crucifixion). Reuses the baseline’s mandatory qualifying phrase combined with پہلوٹھا (rank). Mandatory theologian review.
Preeminent In Everything
Approved rendering: ہر چیز میں سب سے پہلا / سب پر افضل
Transliteration: har chīz meñ sab se pahlā / sab par afz̤al
Doctrine: Sonship and Eternal Pre-existence of Christ
Original: πρωτεύων
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:18. Summarizing climax of the Christ-hymn (hapax legomenon πρωτεύων). افضل carries respectful devotional register (used of prophets’ relative excellence in Islamic discourse); must be anchored to the hymn’s absolute, exclusive claim, not read as merely ‘more excellent among comparable figures.‘
Fullness Pleroma
Approved rendering: بھرپوری
Transliteration: bharpūrī
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: کمال (rejected — already claimed by کامل’s Sufi attainment resonance)
NEW COINAGE for this curriculum, no prior Urdu Christian Bible precedent. Colossians 1:19; sharpened at 2:9. Must be tracked as a single fixed rendering across both occurrences without exception — if any Phase 2 translator drifts to a near-synonym at either occurrence, the letter’s cross-referential logic (1:19 anticipating 2:9) is silently broken. One of the two most theologically explosive terms in the letter (with صورت): claiming the totality of divine being dwells in a human, historical man collides directly with tawhid (Qur’an 112). Must always appear paired with مجسم ہونا (baseline incarnation term). Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence, no exceptions.
To Dwell Permanently
Approved rendering: سکونت کرنا / بسنا
Transliteration: sukūnat karnā / basnā
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: κατοικῆσαι
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:19. Must convey settled permanence, not temporary visitation — the permanence itself is precisely the doctrinal point being made, against any softer heterodox alternative framing.
Reconciliation Apokatallaxai
Approved rendering: ملاپ
Transliteration: milāp
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: مصالحت (more legal/diplomatic register, viable only as a secondary gloss, less relationally warm)
Original: ἀποκαταλλάξαι
Category: Salvation
NEW COINAGE for this curriculum (no Romans/Galatians baseline precedent — ἀποκαταλλάσσω does not occur there). Colossians 1:20 (cf. Ephesians 2:16, the only other NT occurrence). Attested in wider Urdu Bible tradition (2 Corinthians 5:18-20). Deliberately distinguished from صلح (peace, the resulting STATE, already fixed) — ملاپ names the active, cross-accomplished restoration of a broken relationship. Colossians 1:20 uses both together; the Urdu must preserve the double emphasis, never collapse to one word. Mandatory theologian review given direct dependence on the crucifixion.
Fullness Of Deity Bodily
Approved rendering: تمام الوہیت کی بھرپوری جسمانی طور پر
Transliteration: tamām ulūhiyyat kī bharpūrī jismānī taur par
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians — THE SINGLE HIGHEST-PRIORITY TERM IN THIS ENTIRE LANGUAGE PACKAGE, exceeding even the crucifixion-negation risk in doctrinal density. Colossians 2:9. Fixed compound of بھرپوری + الوہیت + جسمانی طور پر; must never be split across a sentence in a way any component could be individually softened. Maximal, direct collision with tawhid (Qur’an 112). Must always carry the mandatory incarnation-collision note. Mandatory human theologian review, every single occurrence, no exceptions.
Deity Godhead
Approved rendering: الوہیت
Transliteration: ulūhiyyat
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:9 (θεότης, distinct from θειότης/‘divine quality,’ Romans 1:20). Arabic-derived, directly parallel to Islamic theological vocabulary for divine nature (tawḥīd al-ulūhiyyah) — genuine shared vocabulary for the CONCEPT of deity, but predicating it of a human historical figure is exactly the collision point. Never used standalone outside the fixed fullness_of_deity_bodily compound.
Bodily Somatikos
Approved rendering: جسمانی طور پر
Transliteration: jismānī taur par
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:9. Pairs with fixed مجسم ہونا (baseline incarnation term) at every occurrence; the adverbial pivot making 2:9 the letter’s most acute incarnation-and-deity statement.
Buried And Raised With Christ
Approved rendering: اُس کے ساتھ دفن ہوئے / اُس کے ساتھ جی اُٹھے
Transliteration: us ke sāth dafn hu’e / us ke sāth jī uṭhe
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: συνταφέντες … συνηγέρθητε
Category: Union with Christ
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:12; reprised 3:1. Believers’ baptism-union with Christ’s death and resurrection, inheriting BOTH the crucifixion-negation risk (Qur’an 4:157) AND the resurrection-conflation risk in a single personal-identity claim. Must reuse the baseline’s mandatory مُردوں میں سے جی اُٹھنا qualifying phrase without exception. Automatic theologian-review flag, every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: خوش خبری
Transliteration: khush khabrī
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: انجیل شریف کی تعلیم
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used throughout Colossians (1:5, 23; 4:3 as ‘mystery of Christ’ companion). Distinguish from انجیل used alone (tahrif/corruption doctrine risk).
Grace
Approved rendering: فضل
Transliteration: faz̤l
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: رحمت, احسان, کرم
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:2, 6; 3:16; 4:6.
Faith
Approved rendering: ایمان
Transliteration: īmān
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:4, 23; 2:5, 7, 12 — object of faith (Christ specifically) must remain explicit at every occurrence.
Saints
Approved rendering: مقدس لوگ
Transliteration: muqaddas log
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: ولی
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:2, 4, 12, 26; never ولی (Sufi shrine-veneration category).
Redemption
Approved rendering: چھڑایا / چھٹکارا
Transliteration: chhuṛāyā / chhuṭkārā
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Rejected alternatives: فدیہ
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:14, immediately preceding and grounding ‘forgiveness of sins’ — this dependency must be preserved in translation.
Flesh
Approved rendering: جسم
Transliteration: jism
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Rejected alternatives: نفس (risks importing the Sufi nafs-discipline system)
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 2:11, 18, 23; 3:5 (adjacent). Must be kept distinct from بدن (see body_metaphor entry below) — جسم is reserved for the ethical/anthropological sense (σάρξ), never the church-body metaphor (σῶμα).
Idolatry
Approved rendering: بت پرستی
Transliteration: but-parastī
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package (works_of_the_flesh_idolatry), unchanged. Colossians 3:5, identified with covetousness. Genuine overlap with shirk; do not soften.
Holy
Approved rendering: پاک
Transliteration: pāk
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: طاہر
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:22 (‘holy and blameless’), 3:12.
Called
Approved rendering: بلایا گیا
Transliteration: bulāyā gayā
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: دعوت دی گئی
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 3:15 (‘to which you were called in one body’). دعوت avoided for da’wah-conflation reasons.
All Things Ta Panta
Approved rendering: سب چیزیں / ساری کائنات
Transliteration: sab chīzeñ / sārī kā’ināt
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: τὰ πάντα
Category: Creation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:16-20, repeated four times. مخلوق-adjacent vocabulary is genuine shared ground with Islamic creation theology; doctrinal weight is in Christ standing decisively outside and over the category. Must remain consistently rendered across the entire hymn (1:16-20) since the passage’s rhetorical force depends on identical recurrence.
Thrones Dominions Rulers Authorities
Approved rendering: تخت، حکومتیں، حکمرانیاں، اختیارات
Transliteration: takht, hukūmateñ, hukmrāniyāñ, ikhtiyārāt
Doctrine: Spiritual Powers Created, Subordinated, Disarmed
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Creation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:16; reused 2:15. Fixed fourfold formula (cf. Ephesians 1:21; 6:12). Genuine partial overlap with Islamic angelology and popular jinn-hierarchy folk belief — a real bridge, but the text’s claim that Christ CREATED and OUTRANKS every rank must not be lost to mere descriptive cosmology. Native speaker plus theologian review recommended.
Head Of The Body The Church
Approved rendering: سر / سربراہ
Transliteration: sar / sarbarāh
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:18; reused 2:10, 19; and reused of the husband in the household code at 3:18. Must be tracked identically across all four occurrences; a translator note at 3:18 should point back to 1:18 so the analogy (not identity) between the two headships is visible. Native speaker plus theologian review at 3:18 given intersection with gender-role expectations.
Beginning Arche
Approved rendering: اِبتدا / اصل
Transliteration: ibtidā / aṣl
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:18. Must be distinguished in context from ἀρχαί (rulers, plural, v.16, thrones_dominions_rulers_authorities entry) despite the shared Greek root; a brief distinguishing note is recommended.
Father Was Pleased
Approved rendering: خدا کو یہ پسند آیا / خدا نے یہ چاہا
Transliteration: k͟hudā ko yih pasand āyā / k͟hudā ne yih chāhā
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: εὐδόκησεν
Category: God
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:19. Implicitly Trinitarian statement (unstated subject most naturally the Father); must preserve sovereign divine pleasure/resolve, not mere permission or accident, since the verse implies a distinction of persons doctrinally significant against a strict Islamic unitarian frame.
Having Made Peace
Approved rendering: صلح کرا کے / صلح قائم کر کے
Transliteration: ṣulḥ karā ke / ṣulḥ qā’im kar ke
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιήσας
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians (verbal/achieved sense of the fixed صلح noun). Colossians 1:20. Must be read together with ملاپ above, not collapsed into it — one names the achieved state, the other the restorative act.
On Earth Or In Heaven
Approved rendering: خواہ زمین کی چیزیں ہوں خواہ آسمان کی
Transliteration: k͟hwāh zamīn kī chīzeñ hoñ k͟hwāh āsmān kī
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἴτε τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἴτε τὰ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:20. Merism echoing 1:16; consistency with that verse’s phrasing should be preserved so the reader hears the deliberate structural echo between creation and reconciliation.
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: گناہوں کی معافی
Transliteration: gunāhoñ kī ma’āfī
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Redemption
Original: ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:14; 2:13. Risks assimilation to the Islamic maghfirah framework (mercy weighed against deeds, no mediating atonement) if presented in isolation. Must always be taught as flowing FROM redemption (a costly ransom, the immediately preceding clause in 1:14), never as an unconditional mercy-grant apart from any atoning basis.
Kingdom Of The Son
Approved rendering: بیٹے کی بادشاہی
Transliteration: beṭe kī bādshāhī
Doctrine: Inheritance in Christ
Original: ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Kingdom
EXTENDS baseline kingdom_of_god entry. Colossians 1:13. Sharpens the baseline’s generic خدا کی بادشاہی by making the Son himself, not generic ‘God,’ the kingdom’s ruler — reinforcing sonship_of_christ.
Hostile Enemy
Approved rendering: دشمن
Transliteration: dushman
Doctrine: Universal Scope and Unity in Christ
Original: ἐχθρός
Category: Sin
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:21. Names an inherited, active relational hostility toward God, not merely occasional wrong acts — exceeds the Islamic fitrah (natural purity) framework of individual accountability and must be taught explicitly as an additional claim.
Mystery
Approved rendering: راز
Transliteration: rāz
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Sovereignly Revealed
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Revelation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:26-27; reused 2:2; 4:3 (mystery_of_christ entry). Strong resonance with Sufi kashf (mystical unveiling attained through discipline) — the same risk the baseline flags for مکاشفہ. Every occurrence must carry a note that this mystery (‘Christ in you, the hope of glory’) is sovereignly disclosed by God, never humanly attained — directly relevant to chapter 2’s polemic against self-made ascetic wisdom.
Human Tradition
Approved rendering: انسانوں کی روایت
Transliteration: insānoñ kī riwāyat
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:8. روایت is precisely the term for transmitted religious authority in Islamic discourse (hadith-transmission, isnad); an unqualified rendering risks sounding like a categorical attack on the authority of transmitted religious tradition as such. Must be anchored explicitly and narrowly to the specific Colossian syncretism, never generalized. Mandatory theologian review.
Dead In Trespasses Made Alive
Approved rendering: گناہوں میں مُردہ / زندہ کر دیا
Transliteration: gunāhoñ meñ murdah / zindah kar diyā
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Redemption
Original: νεκρούς … ζωοποιήσας
Category: Salvation
EXTENDS baseline sin entry. Colossians 2:13. Total spiritual deadness (not merely accumulated individual sins) must be explicitly taught as going beyond the Islamic fitrah (natural purity) framework of individual, non-inherited accountability.
Record Of Debt
Approved rendering: قرض کی تحریر
Transliteration: qarz kī taḥrīr
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose: Shadow and Substance
Original: χειρόγραφον
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:14. Legal-financial metaphor for the law’s condemning record; must be read together with legal_decrees_dogmata below as naming the law’s condemning record specifically, cancelled at the cross — not a claim about debt/finance generally.
Legal Decrees Dogmata
Approved rendering: احکام
Transliteration: aḥkām
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose: Shadow and Substance
Original: τοῖς δόγμασιν
Category: Covenant
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:14. احکام is a live, significant term in Islamic legal-theological vocabulary (aḥkām al-shar’iyyah). An unqualified statement that Christ ‘cancelled the decrees’ risks being heard as a general claim about the abrogation of religious law as such. Requires the same narrow-scope discipline the Galatians baseline established for شریعت and شریعت کے اعمال. Mandatory theologian review.
Disarmed Rulers And Triumph
Approved rendering: حکمرانوں اور اختیارات کو غیرمسلح کر دیا / فتح کے جشن میں دکھایا
Transliteration: ḥukmrānoñ aur ikhtiyārāt ko g͟hair-musallaḥ kar diyā / fatḥ ke jashn meñ dikhāyā
Doctrine: Spiritual Powers Created, Subordinated, Disarmed
Original: ἀπεκδυσάμενος τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας … θριαμβεύσας
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:15. Reuses ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι vocabulary fixed at 1:16. θριαμβεύσας alludes to the Roman military triumph, unfamiliar to Urdu readers — requires a mandatory cultural-historical footnote (no lexical substitute resolves this). Depends on the historical crucifixion for its force.
Shadow And Substance
Approved rendering: پرچھائیں / اصل حقیقت
Transliteration: parchhā’iñ / aṣl ḥaqīqat
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose: Shadow and Substance
Original: σκιά … σῶμα
Category: Covenant
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:17. Directly parallel to the Galatians baseline’s law/grace and paidagogos/guardian cautions. Must be taught with the same narrow-scope discipline: the Mosaic ceremonial system specifically is in view, not a claim that Torah or religious law generally was always meaningless.
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: خود ساختہ مذہب
Transliteration: k͟hud-sākhtah maz’hab
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:23. Same risk pattern as human_tradition above: could be heard as a broad dismissal of ‘man-made religion’ generally rather than Paul’s narrow target (one specific ascetic-legalistic-mystical system at Colossae). Same narrow-scope discipline as شریعت کے اعمال in Galatians. Human theologian review required for pastoral framing.
Seek Things Above
Approved rendering: اُوپر کی چیزیں تلاش کرو
Transliteration: ūpar kī chīzeñ talāsh karo
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: τὰ ἄνω ζητεῖτε
Category: Union with Christ
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:1-2. Inherits the union-with-Christ/resurrection risk profile from συνηγέρθητε (2:12); the exhortation itself is otherwise low-risk.
Life Hidden With Christ
Approved rendering: تمہاری زندگی مسیح کے ساتھ خدا میں پوشیدہ ہے
Transliteration: tumhārī zindagī masīḥ ke sāth k͟hudā meñ poshīdah hai
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Rejected alternatives: فنا / فنا فی اللہ (explicitly rejected — must never be used in this context)
Original: ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ
Category: Union with Christ
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:3. Risk of Sufi fana’ (self-annihilation into the divine) misreading — must be taught relationally (participatory union by grace), never ontological absorption. Extends the Galatians baseline’s fana’-caution for co-crucifixion identity language.
Old Self
Approved rendering: پرانا انسان
Transliteration: purānā insān
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:9. Individual identity-renewal counterpart to the baseline’s corporate/cosmic نئی مخلوق (new creation, Galatians 6:15); track this distinction so readers do not conflate individual and corporate senses.
New Self
Approved rendering: نیا انسان
Transliteration: nayā insān
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ὁ νέος ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:10. Distinct from but thematically related to نئی مخلوق; individual counterpart.
Renewed In The Image Of The Creator
Approved rendering: علم میں نیا بنایا جانا خالق کی صورت کے مطابق
Transliteration: ‘ilm meñ nayā banāyā jānā k͟hāliq kī ṣūrat ke mutābiq
Doctrine: Individual Renewal in the Image of the Creator
Original: ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν κατ’ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος αὐτόν
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:10. Reuses صورت (image) from 1:15 but in the imago Dei (Genesis 1:26-27) sense — humanity’s derivative image-bearing, NOT Christ’s unique deity-image. Must be explicitly cross-referenced and distinguished from the image_of_god entry to avoid conflating a christological Critical-tier claim with an anthropological one.
No Distinction In Christ
Approved rendering: یونانی، یہودی، ختنہ، نامختون، وحشی، سکوتھی، غلام، آزاد
Transliteration: yūnānī, yahūdī, khatnah, nā-makhtūn, waḥshī, sakōthī, ghulām, āzād
Doctrine: Universal Scope and Unity in Christ
Original: Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος
Category: Church
EXTENDS baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles and circumcision/uncircumcision entries. Colossians 3:11, broadening Galatians 3:28’s triad with ethnic categories unique to this letter (barbarian/Scythian). Must retain Paul’s own specific categories, never reframed via an ummah/believer-kafir framework.
Submit Be Subject
Approved rendering: تابع ہونا / اطاعت کرنا
Transliteration: tābi’ honā / iṭā’at karnā
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: اسلام-root vocabulary (explicitly forbidden per baseline standing rule)
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:18. Deliberately NOT rendered with any term echoing اسلام’s root meaning, per the baseline’s standing forbidden-substitution rule, though the semantic proximity of ‘submission’ is unavoidable and must be flagged for pastoral framing rather than avoided outright. Native speaker plus human theologian review required given intersection with gender-role and family-authority expectations.
Reward Of The Inheritance
Approved rendering: میراث کا اجر
Transliteration: mīrās kā ajr
Doctrine: Inheritance in Christ
Original: τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν τῆς κληρονομίας
Category: Household
EXTENDS baseline heir_inheritance entry. Colossians 3:24. میراث is a major, precisely codified category in Islamic jurisprudence (farā’iḍ, fixed inheritance shares); readers may default to that legal-technical frame. Must be explicitly taught as grace-promised reward, never calculated legal entitlement.
Mystery Of Christ
Approved rendering: مسیح کا راز
Transliteration: masīḥ kā rāz
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Sovereignly Revealed
Original: τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Revelation
Reuses the راز rendering fixed at 1:26-27 (see mystery entry). Colossians 4:3. Same Sufi-kashf caution applies — sovereignly disclosed, never humanly attained.
Medium Risk Terms
Church
Approved rendering: کلیسیا
Transliteration: kalīsiyā
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: مسجد, امت
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:18, 24; 4:15-16. Never مسجد or امت.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: خدا کی بادشاہی
Transliteration: k͟hudā kī bādshāhī
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Sharpened in Colossians 1:13 as specifically ‘the kingdom of the Son’ — see kingdom_of_the_son entry below for the extension.
Elemental Principles
Approved rendering: دنیا کے ابتدائی اصول
Transliteration: dunyā ke ibtidā’ī uṣūl
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: False Teaching
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 2:8, 20; same pastoral care regarding ritual-calendar systems (Ramadan, prayer times, Hajj) applies directly to Colossians 2:16’s festival/new-moon/sabbath list.
Slavery
Approved rendering: غلامی / غلام
Transliteration: ghulāmī / ghulām
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 3:22-4:1 uses this in its socio-historical household-code sense; never politicize toward a named living community.
Heir Inheritance
Approved rendering: وارث
Transliteration: wāris
Doctrine: Adoption and Sonship
Inherited from Galatians extension of Romans package, unchanged. Underlies the reward_of_the_inheritance extension at Colossians 3:24; inheritance by grace-promise, never merit.
Apostle
Approved rendering: رسول
Transliteration: rasūl
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: نبی
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:1, 23-25. Distinguish from διάκονος (minister, see minister_diakonos below) and from the Quranic scripture-bearing-messenger paradigm.
Peace
Approved rendering: صلح
Transliteration: ṣulḥ
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: سلامتی
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:2; 3:15. Must be kept distinct from ملاپ (reconciliation, the active restorative act — see reconciliation_apokatallaxai below); صلح names the resulting peaceful state.
Invisible God
Approved rendering: غیر دیکھا ہوا / پوشیدہ
Transliteration: ghair dekhā huā / poshīdah
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: ἀόρατος
Category: God
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:15. Genuine shared ground with Islamic transcendence doctrine (Qur’an 6:103); low risk alone, sets up εἰκών’s higher risk.
Visible And Invisible Things
Approved rendering: دیکھی اور اَن دیکھی چیزیں
Transliteration: dekhī aur an-dekhī chīzeñ
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: τὰ ὁρατὰ καὶ τὰ ἀόρατα
Category: Creation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:16. Low risk alone; sets up the higher-risk fourfold spiritual-powers list that follows.
Body Metaphor
Approved rendering: بدن
Transliteration: badan
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:18, 24; 2:19; 3:15. Reserved exclusively for the church-body metaphor (σῶμα); جسم (already fixed for σάρξ/‘flesh’) must never be substituted here. Hard translation-memory rule, not stylistic preference, since ordinary spoken Urdu often uses جسم loosely for ‘body’ generally.
Love Agape
Approved rendering: محبت
Transliteration: muḥabbat
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and New Life in Christ
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians as a standalone TM entry (previously only embedded in other baseline doctrine notes). Colossians 1:4, 8; 2:2; 3:14; 3:19 (husbands). Genuine bridge word, also significant in Islamic devotional/Sufi usage (ishq/muhabbat); guard against flattening into generic sentiment or romantic-ishq connotation.
Dominion Of Darkness
Approved rendering: تاریکی کا اختیار
Transliteration: tārīkī kā ikhtiyār
Doctrine: Spiritual Powers Created, Subordinated, Disarmed
Original: ἡ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:13. Sets up the ἐξουσίαι vocabulary reused at 1:16 and 2:15; track consistently across all three occurrences.
Stewardship
Approved rendering: خدا کی طرف سے دی گئی ذمہ داری
Transliteration: k͟hudā kī taraf se dī ga’ī zimmedārī
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: οἰκονομία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Church
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:25. Paul’s apostolic commission as an administrative trust, not personal authority.
Mature Perfect
Approved rendering: کامل
Transliteration: kāmil
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: τέλειος
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:28; 4:12. کامل carries strong Sufi spiritual-attainment resonance (insān-e-kāmil, ‘the perfect/complete human,’ sometimes applied to Muhammad or advanced masters). Must be anchored explicitly to Christ-formed maturity through the gospel, not attainable ascetic/mystical progress — directly opposes ch.2’s critique of self-made spiritual attainment, a teaching point rather than a pure liability.
Philosophy And Empty Deceit
Approved rendering: فلسفہ اور خالی دھوکا
Transliteration: falsafah aur k͟hālī dhokā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: φιλοσοφία καὶ κενῆς ἀπάτης
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:8. Lexically safe; risk is pastoral-rhetorical, not doctrinal — must not be taught as a blanket condemnation of reasoned thought, which would be needlessly alienating in a culturally sophisticated Urdu literary environment.
Festival New Moon Sabbath
Approved rendering: تہوار، نئے چاند کا تہوار، سبت کے دن
Transliteration: tahwār, na’e chānd kā tahwār, sabt ke din
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose: Shadow and Substance
Original: ἑορτή, νεομηνία, σάββατα
Category: Covenant
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:16. Directly analogous to the baseline’s elemental_principles pastoral-care note regarding the Islamic calendar’s own observances (Ramadan, prayer times, Hajj) — must never be taught dismissively of any specific calendar practice, Jewish or otherwise.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: فرشتوں کی پرستش
Transliteration: farishtoñ kī parastish
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:18. A rare genuine point of AGREEMENT rather than collision — Islamic theology also forbids angel-worship as shirk. Should be actively highlighted as common ground with brief historical framing (a specific Hellenistic-Jewish mystical practice), not treated as an additional alarm.
Puffed Up By Fleshly Mind
Approved rendering: اپنے جسمانی خیالات کی وجہ سے فضول طور پر پھولا ہوا
Transliteration: apne jismānī k͟hayālāt kī wajah se faz̤ūl taur par phūlā huā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: φυσιούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ νοὸς τῆς σαρκός
Category: Sin
EXTENDS baseline flesh entry. Colossians 2:18. Reinforces the caution that جسم must not collapse into simple body-negation; names self-inflated religious pride specifically.
Severity To The Body
Approved rendering: جسم کے ساتھ سختی
Transliteration: jism ke sāth sak͟htī
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ἀφειδία σώματος
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 2:23. Distinct from 3:5’s put_to_death_earthly_nature (Paul’s own positive instruction); names the false teachers’ ascetic self-punishment specifically, which Paul rejects as powerless.
Compassion
Approved rendering: دردمندی
Transliteration: dardmandī
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:12. Safe, shared virtue vocabulary.
Humility Positive Sense
Approved rendering: خاکساری
Transliteration: k͟hāksārī
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:12. Same Greek root as the FALSE, ascetic-imposed humility critiqued at 2:18, 23 — same word, opposite evaluative force. Context must clearly distinguish the two senses; a brief contrastive note at 3:12 recommended.
Bearing With And Forgiving
Approved rendering: برداشت کرنا / معاف کرنا
Transliteration: bardāsht karnā / ma’āf karnā
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἀνεχόμενοι, χαριζόμενοι
Category: Sanctification
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:13. Forgiveness must be anchored to ‘as the Lord has forgiven you’ — a costly, Christ-patterned forgiveness, not unconditional mercy alone, per the maghfirah-model caution already established for grace/justification/salvation.
Love The Bond Of Unity
Approved rendering: محبت جو کاملیت کا بندھن ہے
Transliteration: muḥabbat jo kāmiliyat kā bandhan hai
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and New Life in Christ

Transliteration: iṭā’at karo
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑπακούετε
Category: Household
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 3:20 (children) and 3:22 (bondservants), distinct grounding for each — must not be conflated, and neither should be conflated with religious da’wah-obedience vocabulary.
Fear Of The Lord Service
Approved rendering: خداوند کا خوف
Transliteration: k͟hudāwand kā k͟hauf
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: φοβούμενοι τὸν κύριον
Category: Household
NEW for Colossians (reuses fixed خداوند). Colossians 3:22. خوف (reverence) is safe, shared reverence-vocabulary.
Justice And Fairness Masters
Approved rendering: انصاف اور برابری
Transliteration: inṣāf aur barābarī
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα
Category: Household
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 4:1. Historical-institutional caution per baseline slavery entry: must never be politicized toward a named living community; teach as tempering, not endorsing, the institution.
Wisdom Toward Outsiders
Approved rendering: حکمت سے چلو اُن کے ساتھ جو باہر ہیں
Transliteration: ḥikmat se chalo un ke sāth jo bāhar haiñ
Doctrine: Prayer and Mission to Outsiders
Original: ἐν σοφίᾳ περιπατεῖτε πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω
Category: Mission
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 4:5. حکمت is a genuine shared-vocabulary bridge term (also a significant Quranic virtue, al-Ḥakīm). Given real social/legal sensitivity around proselytization in Urdu-speaking contexts, foreground this counsel pastorally as consistent with the baseline’s anti-confrontational evangelism framing.

Doctrine: Apostleship

Category: Church
