Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Ephesians | English → Bavarian
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning Ephesians 1–6. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked (baseline reuse) and MUST use the exact recorded Bavarian rendering; no alternative spelling or word choice is permitted. Terms new to this curriculum are marked (NEW) and are proposed here for the first time, pending Phase 2 Step 17 review and formal addition to translation_memory.json.
Risk tiers follow the definitions in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json: Critical and High require human theologian review; Medium requires native speaker review; Low requires automated review (with mandatory native-speaker dialect/orthography spot-check per the baseline’s standing rule for all Bavarian output).

Mandatory theologian review. |
| 52 | boldness | παρρησία | parrēsia | ”Zuversicht” / “Freimut” | NEW | Low-Medium | Mystery of Christ Revealed | 3:12; 6:19,20 | Low collision. |

Mandatory theologian review. |

| 64 | old self / old man | παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος | palaios anthrōpos | ”der oide Mensch” | NEW | Critical | Walking in Newness of Life | 4:22 | Paired verb pattern “ausziehn” (take off) — reuse same verb pair at 6:11 armor “put on” for authorial-link consistency. |
| 65 | new self / new man | καινὸς ἄνθρωπος (individual sense) | kainos anthrōpos | ”der neue Mensch” | NEW | Critical | Walking in Newness of Life | 4:24 | Same phrase as 2:15’s corporate “new man” — individual application; verb “anziehn” (put on). |
| 66 | devil | διάβολος | diabolos | Teufel | NEW | Medium | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 4:27; 6:11 | Collides with folk-carnival devil figure (Krampus/Perchten); distinguish from serious spiritual adversary. |
| 67 | grieve (the Spirit) | λυπέω | lypeō | ”traurig macha” | NEW | Low | Sanctification | 4:30 | Low collision. |
| 68 | imitators (of God) | μιμητής | mimētēs | ”Nochfolger” | NEW | Low | Walking in Newness of Life | 5:1 | Low collision. |
| 69 | offering and sacrifice | προσφορά / θυσία | prosphora / thysia | Gob und Opfer | NEW | High | Household Codes / Salvation by Grace | 5:2 | Collides with “Messopfer” (Mass sacrifice); risks implying Christ’s sacrifice is repeated rather than once-for-all. |

| 72 | submitting to one another | ὑποτάσσομαι | hypotassomai | unterordna | NEW | Critical | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 5:21,22,24 | Flagship term; mutuality of 5:21 must remain visibly connected to 5:22’s specific application. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 73 | savior | σωτήρ | sōtēr | Retter (caution: “Heiland” attested but Heil-root caution applies) | NEW | Critical | Household Codes / Salvation | 5:23 | Same Bavaria-specific Heil-root caution as baseline salvation entry; “Retter” preferred default. |
| 74 | one flesh | μία σάρξ | mia sarx | ”oa Fleisch” | NEW | Low-Medium | Household Codes | 5:31 | Genesis 2:24 quotation; low collision. |
| 75 | slave / servant | δοῦλος | doulos | Sklave | NEW | High | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 6:5-9 | Avoid “Knecht” (Bavarian agrarian farmhand role) — risks softening ancient slavery’s moral weight into benign historical farm-labor relationship. |

| 77 | armor (of God) | πανοπλία | panoplia | Waffenrüstung vo Gott / Rüstung | NEW | High | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 6:11,13 | Shares root with ch.4 “equipping”; medieval/knightly imagery culturally legible; guard against militarist/nationalist misreading. |
| 78 | wrestle / struggle | πάλη | palē | Ringa | NEW | High | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 6:12 | AVOID “Kampf” — Nazi-era contamination risk (Mein Kampf), same logic as baseline’s Heil caution, arguably sharper in Bavaria/Munich. |
| 79 | prayer and supplication | προσευχή / δέησις | proseuchē / deēsis | reuse Fürbitt family | baseline reuse | High | Prayer and Intercession | 6:18 | Altötting Marian-intercession collision risk persists per baseline. |

Cross-Reference Notes for Phase 2
- Terms #38 (Leib, body of Christ), #28 (Gheimnis, mystery), #51 (Mächt und Gwalten, spiritual powers), #44 (oa neuer Mensch, one new man), #45 (Versöhnung, reconciliation), #56 (Oanheit vom Geist, unity of the Spirit), #72 (unterordna, submission), #73 (Retter/Heiland, savior), and #24 (Vorherbestimmung, predestined) are the nine highest-priority Critical-risk NEW terms introduced by this curriculum and require dedicated entries in an updated
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonbefore Phase 2 begins. - All baseline-reuse terms in this table are locked exactly as recorded in the Romans
translation_memory.json; no deviation is permitted regardless of Ephesians-specific context. - Every NEW term in this glossary must be added to
translation_memory.jsonwith an assigned version increment before Phase 2 segment translation of the chapter in which it first appears, per the escalation procedure in12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Gerechtigkeit
Transliteration: Gerechtigkeit
Doctrine: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Ephesians within the armor-of-God metaphor (‘breastplate of righteousness’, 6:14); the borrowed standard-German compound must not be diluted by the surrounding military-narrative register.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Sohn vo Gott
Transliteration: Sohn vom Gott
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 4:13 (‘knowledge of the Son of God’) and underlies 1:20-23’s cosmic headship language; requires the same uncompromising, co-equal-deity rendering established in Romans.
Works
Approved rendering: Werk
Transliteration: Werk
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Original: ἔργα
Category: Salvation
NEW. The single most doctrinally load-bearing new term in the core passage (2:9-10). Ordinary, low-register farm/craft-labor word now bearing the sola-gratia antithesis; Altötting votive-offering piety is the most acute works/merit collision risk in the letter. The identical word must carry unmistakably different valence at 2:9 (excluded as basis) versus 2:10 (affirmed as fruit); mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
Gift Of Salvation
Approved rendering: Gschenk
Transliteration: Gschenk
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Rejected alternatives: Gnodngob’n (rejected: distinct referent, ministry enablement not salvation itself)
Original: δῶρον
Category: Salvation
NEW. Renders δῶρον at 2:8 — salvation itself as God’s gift. Must NEVER be collapsed with Gnodngob’n (χάρισμα, spiritual gifts) or with δωρεά/δόμα (Christ’s ministry gifts, 4:7-8); losing this distinction erases Paul’s referential precision.
Head
Approved rendering: Haupt
Transliteration: Haupt
Doctrine: Church as the Body of Christ
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Christology
NEW. Renders κεφαλή at 1:22; 4:15; 5:23. The household-codes application at 5:23 (husband as head of wife) compounds the headship-authority collision already present for Christ’s headship over the church; must always be taught paired with 5:25’s self-sacrificial-love qualifier, which the Bavarian rendering cannot itself enforce grammatically.
Body Of Christ
Approved rendering: Leib
Transliteration: Leib
Doctrine: The Church as the Body of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Körper (rejected: clinically anatomical, loses the theological metaphor entirely)
Original: σῶμα
Category: Christology
NEW. Renders σῶμα at 1:22-23; 2:16; 3:6; 4:4,12,16,25; 5:23,30. MAJOR COLLISION: identical to the Eucharistic ‘Der Leib Christi’ spoken over the consecrated host at every Bavarian Mass. No substitute word exists; mandate a companion clarifying phrase at first occurrence per unit (‘mir, de Gmoaschaft vo alle Gläubign, san sein Leib’). Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
Savior
Approved rendering: Retter
Transliteration: Retta
Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Rejected alternatives: Heiland (permitted only in clearly traditional devotional contexts with reviewer sign-off)
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Christology
NEW. Renders σωτήρ at 5:23. Avoid the beloved devotional term ‘Heiland’ (alive in Christmas-carol and chapel-name usage) as default, given the same Bavaria-specific Heil-root contamination caution documented in the baseline for salvation (Munich’s historic role as the Nazi movement’s headquarters). Pastoral teaching must make clear this headship/savior analogy is defined by 5:25’s self-sacrificial love.
One New Man
Approved rendering: oa neuer Mensch
Transliteration: oa neua Mensch
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Original: καινὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Church
NEW. Renders καινὸς ἄνθρωπος at 2:15. Given Munich’s specific historic role as the Nazi movement’s headquarters, this phrase requires heightened, historically-aware handling beyond the general German-language risk already documented in the Romans baseline for Jew/Gentile unity language. Always anchor ‘in Christus’ within the same clause; never let the phrase stand as a free-floating unity slogan. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Reconciliation
Approved rendering: Versöhnung
Transliteration: Versöhnung
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω / καταλλαγή
Category: Church
NEW. Renders ἀποκαταλλάσσω/καταλλαγή at 2:16. MAJOR COLLISION: identical to the post-Vatican-II Bavarian Catholic name for the Sacrament of Confession, ‘das Sakrament der Versöhnung’. Christ’s once-for-all cross-work must always be marked as a completed, historical, unrepeatable act (‘scho amal für ollzeit gschehn’), never phrased as an ongoing sacramental process. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Unity Of The Spirit
Approved rendering: Oanheit vom Geist
Transliteration: Oanheit vom Gaist
Doctrine: Unity of the Spirit in the Church
Original: ἑνότητα τοῦ Πνεύματος
Category: Church
NEW. Renders ἑνότητα τοῦ Πνεύματος at 4:3, followed by the sevenfold ‘one body, one Spirit… one God and Father’ formula (4:4-6). Deliberately reuses the ‘Oanheit’ root from the Romans baseline’s unity-of-Jews-and-Gentiles doctrine name for cross-curriculum consistency. This is the letter’s central ecclesial-unity term; mandatory theologian review.
Predestined
Approved rendering: vorherbestimmt / Vorherbestimmung
Transliteration: vorherbestimmt / Vorherbestimmung
Doctrine: Election and Predestination in Christ
Original: προορίζω
Category: Election
NEW. Renders προορίζω at 1:5,11. Borrowed as-is from standard German following the same register-gap pattern as Erwählung and Rechtfertigung — no native dialect coinage exists at all. Ephesians states this doctrine more explicitly and repeatedly than Romans 8-9; mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence. Do not invent a folk coinage here.
Mystery
Approved rendering: Gheimnis
Transliteration: Geheimnis
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Mystery
NEW. Renders μυστήριον at 1:9; 3:3,4,9; 5:32; 6:19. MAJOR COLLISION: identical to the Rosary’s Joyful/Sorrowful/Glorious/Luminous ‘Geheimnisse’, one of the most devotionally central words in Bavarian Catholic piety, pulling toward private meditative devotion rather than Paul’s sense of a formerly hidden truth now publicly disclosed. Also collides with Anthroposophy’s ‘Mysterium’ esoteric-initiation frame. Never let stand unglossed; pair with its plain content (fellow-heirs, same body, fellow-partakers, 3:6). Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Old Self
Approved rendering: der oide Mensch
Transliteration: der olde Mensch
Doctrine: Walking in Newness of Life
Original: παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος at 4:22, ‘put off’ with the clothing-verb ‘ausziehn’, matching Paul’s own ἀπεκδύομαι imagery. The same verb family reappears for the armor of God at 6:11 (‘anziehn’), a deliberate authorial link the Bavarian rendering must preserve. Mandatory theologian review given the doctrine’s centrality to the curriculum.
New Self
Approved rendering: der neue Mensch
Transliteration: der neua Mensch
Doctrine: Walking in Newness of Life
Original: καινὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders καινὸς ἄνθρωπος (individual sense) at 4:24, ‘put on’ with the clothing-verb ‘anziehn’. Shares vocabulary with 2:15’s corporate ‘new man’ (one_new_man) but applied individually here; must not be confused with or collapsed into that corporate term.
Mutual Submission
Approved rendering: unterordna
Transliteration: untaordna
Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Original: ὑποτασσόμενοι ἀλλήλοις
Category: Household
NEW. Renders ὑποτασσόμενοι ἀλλήλοις at 5:21, the governing principle for the entire household code (5:22-6:9). The mutuality of 5:21 must remain visibly connected to 5:22’s specific wife-to-husband application; loss of this connective thread is doctrinally significant given contemporary sensitivities around gender and authority. Always render 5:21 and 5:22 as a single connected teaching unit. Mandatory theologian review.
Rulers And Authorities
Approved rendering: Mächt und Gwalten
Transliteration: Mächte und Gwoitn
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Original: ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι, κοσμοκράτορες
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW. Renders ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι/κοσμοκράτορες at 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:12. Bavarian Alpine folk culture’s unusually live belief in ambient malevolent spiritual forces (Rauhnächte house-blessings, Perchtenlauf, Walpurgisnacht witch-lore) risks assimilating Paul’s teaching into an apotropaic, ritual-warding framework rather than Christ’s decisive, already-won cosmic victory (1:20-22). Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Gnad
Transliteration: Gnod
Doctrine: Grace
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In Ephesians this is the single most acute grace/works collision point in this curriculum (2:5,7,8; also 1:2,6,7; 4:7) given Bavarian Catholic folk piety’s devotional-transaction undertone at Altötting; must always resist that reading.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Erlösung
Transliteration: Erlesung
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Heil (Nazi-era contamination risk, acute in Bavaria specifically)
Original: σωτηρία / σέσωσμαι
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Ephesians 2:5 and 2:8 must render the ‘by grace you have been saved’ clause identically per cross-document consistency rules; also 6:17 (‘helmet of salvation’).
Saints
Approved rendering: Heiling
Transliteration: de Heiling
Doctrine: Sainthood
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at least seven times in Ephesians (1:1,15,18; 3:8,18; 5:3; 6:18), more densely than in Romans; the ‘alle Gläubign’ gloss discipline must be sustained across the whole letter, not applied once.
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Ephesians 6:9’s deliberate wordplay (‘their Master and yours is in heaven’) depends on kyrios carrying both ‘Lord’ and human ‘master’ simultaneously; preserve, do not smooth away, this ambiguity.
Church
Approved rendering: Kirch
Transliteration: Kircha
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: Gmoa (secular-administrative default, rejected)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:22; 3:10,21; 5:23-32; the temple/household-building imagery of 2:19-22 reinforces rather than corrects the building-centered default, requiring deliberate corporate-people teaching.
Law
Approved rendering: Gsetz
Transliteration: Gsötz
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2:15 (‘the law of commandments and ordinances’) as the specific content of the abolished ‘dividing wall’.
Sin
Approved rendering: Sünd
Transliteration: Sind
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2:1; the colloquial Bavarian ‘a Sünd is des scho’ (what a shame/waste) trivialization risk applies with full force since it undergirds the entire ‘by grace’ argument of the core passage.
Election
Approved rendering: Erwählung
Transliteration: Erwöahlung
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Original: ἐκλέγομαι
Category: Election
Inherited from Romans package. Ephesians 1:4 intensifies this Romans-documented register-gap risk by pairing eklegomai explicitly and repeatedly with the NEW term predestined (proorizo); see doctrine ‘Election and Predestination in Christ’.
Intercession
Approved rendering: Fürbitt
Transliteration: Fiabitt
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: προσευχή / δέησις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:16-19 (Paul’s prayer), 3:14-19 (Paul kneeling in prayer), 6:18-20 (intercession ‘for all the saints’); Altötting’s Marian/saint intercessory tradition risk applies at every occurrence.
Redemption
Approved rendering: Erlösung durchs Bluat vom Christus
Transliteration: Erlesung durchs Bluat vom Christus
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
NEW nuance of the baseline Erlösung term. Occurs at 1:7,14 and 4:30; carries a specific ‘ransom by blood’ nuance not to be flattened into the generic well-being/rescue sense of plain Erlösung.
By Nature
Approved rendering: vo Natur aus
Transliteration: vo Natua aus
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: φύσει
Category: Sin
NEW. Renders φύσει at 2:3. Must be rendered forcefully; a weak rendering risks implying sinfulness is optional or environmental only, undercutting the totality of grace argued in vv.4-9.
Mercy
Approved rendering: Barmherzigkeit
Transliteration: Barmherzigkeit
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Original: ἔλεος
Category: God
NEW. Renders ἔλεος at 2:4, the pivot of the core passage (‘But God, being rich in mercy’). Bavarian Catholic folk piety’s strong devotional tradition of mercy (Marian titles like ‘Mutter der Barmherzigkeit’, Divine Mercy devotion) risks a Marian-mediated frame rather than God the Father’s own direct mercy; anchor grammatically to ‘Gott der Voda’ in-context.
Fullness
Approved rendering: Füll
Transliteration: Fülle
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
NEW. Renders πλήρωμα at 1:10,23; 3:19; 4:13. Must be rendered consistently at all four occurrences given its role tying together Christology (1:10), ecclesiology (1:23), the Mystery doctrine (3:19), and the unity/maturity doctrine (4:13).
Fellow Heirs
Approved rendering: Miterben / gleicher Leib / Mitteilhaber
Transliteration: Mitearbn / gleicha Leib / Mitteilhaba
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Original: συγκληρονόμα / σύσσωμα / συμμέτοχα
Category: Church
NEW. Renders the stacked σύν- compounds συγκληρονόμα/σύσσωμα/συμμέτοχα at 3:6, the explicit content of the mystery. Pair every occurrence of ‘Gheimnis’ with this plain-language content to counter the Rosary-devotional collision risk. Preserve the σύν- (‘mit-’) prefix pattern across renderings.
Inheritance
Approved rendering: Erbschaft
Transliteration: Erbschaft
Doctrine: Election and Predestination in Christ
Original: κληρονομία / κλῆρος
Category: Election
NEW. Renders κληρονομία/κλῆρος at 1:11,14,18; 5:5. Bavarian rural farm-inheritance culture (the historic Erbhof institution) gives this word unusually strong, concrete lived resonance — vividly conveying a real, secured possession, but risking a literal-property expectation rather than the purely spiritual, non-competitive inheritance Paul describes. Must be taught explicitly as non-competing.
Heavenly Places
Approved rendering: s’Himmlische / de himmlischn Örter
Transliteration: s’Himmlische / de himmlischn Eata
Doctrine: The Church as the Body of Christ
Original: ἐπουράνιος
Category: Church
NEW. Renders ἐπουράνιος at 1:3,20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12. A key spatial-theological term linking the believer’s exalted position (2:6) to the spiritual battle (ch.6); must be tracked consistently across all five occurrences.
Slave
Approved rendering: Sklave
Transliteration: Sklave
Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Rejected alternatives: Knecht (the traditional Bavarian agrarian farmhand role — REJECTED: softens ancient chattel slavery’s moral weight into a benign historical farm-employment relationship)
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Household
NEW. Renders δοῦλος at 6:5-9. ‘Sklave’ preserves the term’s proper gravity; the passage’s actual pastoral thrust (mutual accountability before the one true Lord, exploiting the kyrios wordplay of 6:9) is taught explicitly alongside.
Armor Of God
Approved rendering: Waffenrüstung vo Gott
Transliteration: Woffnrüstung vom Gott
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Original: πανοπλία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW. Renders πανοπλία τοῦ θεοῦ at 6:11,13; shortened to ‘Rüstung’ in running text. Shares its root with the ch.4 ‘equipping’ vocabulary. Medieval/knightly imagery is culturally legible in Bavaria (castle/knightly regional heritage) — a modest protective factor — but must not be read as endorsing literal violence or nationalist militarism.
Spiritual Struggle
Approved rendering: Ringa
Transliteration: Ringa
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Rejected alternatives: Kampf (REJECTED: Nazi-era contamination risk via ‘Mein Kampf’ and ‘Kampfgeist’ propaganda, arguably sharper in Bavaria given Munich’s historic role as the movement’s headquarters)
Original: πάλη
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW. Renders πάλη at 6:12, the wrestling-arena term for close-quarters combat. ‘Ringa’ is a live Bavarian wrestling-sport term preserving the arena nuance safely. Mainstream German Bible translations routinely use ‘Kampf’/‘Ringkampf’ here; this curriculum deliberately departs from that precedent.
Evangelist
Approved rendering: Evangelist
Transliteration: Evangelist
Doctrine: Gifts for Building Up the Church
Original: εὐαγγελιστής
Category: Ministry
NEW. Renders εὐαγγελιστής at 4:11, one of the fivefold ministry offices. In Bavarian Catholic tradition ‘Evangelist’ primarily denotes the four Gospel-writers (‘die vier Evangelisten’, a fixture of church art/stained glass), not a NT preaching office; requires a clarifying gloss (‘wer’s Evangelium predigt und weiterträgt’) wherever the 4:11 sense is intended.
Walk
Approved rendering: wandln
Transliteration: wandeln
Doctrine: Walking in Newness of Life
Original: περιπατέω
Category: Walking
NEW. Renders περιπατέω at 2:2,10; 4:1,17; 5:2,8,15 — the governing metaphor for a person’s whole manner of life. Must be rendered identically at every occurrence to preserve the deliberate old-walk/new-walk inclusio between 2:2 and 2:10; never substitute a synonym for stylistic variety even where the moral-trajectory sense must be reinforced contextually against the word’s literal ‘stroll’ meaning.
Offering And Sacrifice
Approved rendering: Gob und Opfer
Transliteration: Gab und Opfa
Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
NEW. Renders προσφορὰν καὶ θυσίαν at 5:2, Christ’s self-giving death in explicit temple-sacrifice terms. Collides with ‘Messopfer’ (the sacrifice of the Mass), devotionally central and weekly repeated; risks implying Christ’s sacrifice is repeated rather than once-for-all. Must be marked explicitly as singular and historical.
Medium Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Evangelium
Transliteration: Evangelium
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Stable, liturgically familiar borrowed term. In Ephesians appears at 1:13, 3:6, 6:15, 6:19 (‘word of truth’, ‘mystery of the gospel’, ‘gospel of peace’).
Faith
Approved rendering: Glaam
Transliteration: Gloam
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. In Ephesians 2:8 faith must read as the instrumental channel of grace, never as a human contribution that itself earns salvation; also 3:12, 4:5,13, 6:16.
Called
Approved rendering: beruafa
Transliteration: beruaft
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Inherited from Romans package. Ephesians 4:1 ‘the calling to which you have been called’ reuses this verb pair.
Calling
Approved rendering: Beruafung
Transliteration: Berufung
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Election
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:18 and 4:1,4; per the forbidden-substitution list, must not collide unclarified with its everyday career-vocation sense.
Holy
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: hoalig
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:4 (election unto holiness) and 5:27 (the church presented holy and without blemish).
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Heiligung
Transliteration: Heiligung
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιάζω
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 5:26 (Christ sanctifying the church); the ‘washing of water’ imagery must not be read as a second, distinct sacramental act apart from Christ’s own action.
Adoption
Approved rendering: Kindschaft
Transliteration: Kindschaft
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Adoption (bare, legal-procedural)
Original: υἱοθεσία
Category: Election
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:5, the goal of predestination; now additionally paired with the NEW term Erbschaft (inheritance) at 1:11,14,18.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: Aufersteh’ng
Transliteration: Auferstehung
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Inherited from Romans package. Ephesians 2:6 (‘raised us up with him’, synēgeiren) and 1:20 reuse this root within the new syn- compound ‘mitn Christus auferstanden’; track alongside the NEW term made_alive_together.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: Gnodngob’n
Transliteration: Gnadengaben
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Original: χάρισμα
Category: Ministry
Inherited from Romans package. Extended in Ephesians to cover δωρεά/δόμα (4:7-8, Christ’s gifts to the church) as one family; must remain distinct from the NEW term Gschenk (δῶρον, 2:8, salvation itself).
Fellowship
Approved rendering: Gmoaschaft
Transliteration: Gemoaschoft
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Inherited from Romans package. Recommended as the clarifying companion phrase alongside the NEW term Leib (body of Christ) at first occurrence per unit, to anchor the corporate sense against the Eucharistic-collision risk.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: s’Reich vo Gott
Transliteration: des Reich vom Gott
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 5:5 (‘the kingdom of Christ and God’); distinguish from any political kingdom association.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: Heiden
Transliteration: Hoaden
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Unity
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2:11; 3:1,6,8; retains the same pejorative undertone documented in the baseline.
Glory
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. The doxological refrain ‘to the praise of his glory’ (1:6,12,14) must be rendered identically at each recurrence; also 3:16,21.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Kraft vo Gott
Transliteration: Kroft vom Gott
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:19-20, 3:7,16,20, 6:10; must retain the specific resurrection-power referent of 1:19-20, not a diffuse capability.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Messias
Transliteration: Messias
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Inherited from Romans package. Ephesians uses ‘Christus’ predominantly as part of Jesus’ proper name/title (‘in Christ Jesus’) rather than invoking the Messias title directly; retained for curriculum completeness and background teaching on Christ’s messianic office.
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: Bund
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Background term for 2:12’s ‘covenants of promise’, from which Gentiles were formerly excluded.
Providence
Approved rendering: Vorsehung
Transliteration: Vorsehung
Doctrine: Providence
Inherited from Romans package. Background concept for 1:11 (‘according to the purpose of him who works all things’) and 3:20 (‘according to the power at work within us’).
Mission
Approved rendering: Mission
Transliteration: Mission
Doctrine: Mission to the Nations
Inherited from Romans package. Background concept for Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles described throughout chapter 3.
Israel
Approved rendering: Israel
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2:12 (‘alienated from the commonwealth of Israel’); the same modern nation-state conflation risk documented in the baseline applies.
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Herrgott
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. God the Father’s own direct initiative at 2:4 (‘But God, being rich in mercy’) must not be displaced by a Marian-mediated mercy frame; use plain ‘Gott’, reserve ‘Herrgott’ for warm folk-devotional contexts only.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: Heiliga Geist
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:13-14 (seal and guarantee), 4:3-4 (agent of unity), 5:18 (filling); must not be rendered with a term for an impersonal life-force.
Father
Approved rendering: Voda
Transliteration: Voter
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:2-3,17; 3:14-15 (‘the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named’).
Forgiveness
Approved rendering: Vergebung
Transliteration: Vergebung
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Original: ἄφεσις
Category: Salvation
NEW. Occurs at 1:7, a concrete component of redemption. Low collision risk given familiarity via the Catholic sacrament of Confession, though see ‘reconciliation’ below for a sharper, distinct collision at 2:16.
Dead In Sin
Approved rendering: gestorbn
Transliteration: gschtorbn
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: νεκρός
Category: Sin
NEW. Renders νεκρός at 2:1,5. Must convey total spiritual incapacity, not sickness, weakness, or mere moral struggle; v.5’s ‘made alive’ must complete the death/life contrast unambiguously.
Trespasses
Approved rendering: Sünd / Fehltritt
Transliteration: Sind / Fehltritt
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: παράπτωμα
Category: Sin
NEW. Renders παράπτωμα (1:7; 2:1,5), paired with ἁμαρτία as a near-synonym for rhetorical weight. No native dialect coinage distinct from Sünd exists; fold into Sünd in ordinary register or use Fehltritt when the text visibly pairs it with hamartia. Loss of the doubling is acceptable register simplification, not doctrinal loss.
Wrath
Approved rendering: Zorn
Transliteration: Zorn
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ὀργή
Category: Sin
NEW. Renders ὀργή at 2:3 and 5:6. Colloquial ‘Zorn’ can denote mere irritability; must be anchored as God’s righteous judicial wrath, never left standing alone as capricious — it is immediately resolved into mercy at 2:4.
Desires
Approved rendering: Gluschtn
Transliteration: Gluschten
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἐπιθυμία
Category: Sin
NEW. Renders ἐπιθυμία at 2:3. A genuinely live dialect word for appetite/craving (e.g. of food), giving excellent register authenticity but risking trivialization of sinful desire into harmless appetite; the surrounding clause (‘of the flesh’) must carry the moral weight.
Love
Approved rendering: Liab
Transliteration: Liabe
Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: God
NEW. Renders ἀγάπη at 2:4; 3:17-19; 5:2,25,28. Everyday dialect ‘Liab’ defaults readily to romantic/familial affection; the self-giving, cross-shaped dimension must be reinforced by context, especially at 5:25 where the same word must carry both marital tenderness and Christ’s sacrificial self-giving simultaneously.
Divine Working
Approved rendering: Wirkung
Transliteration: Wirkung
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Original: ἐνέργεια
Category: God
NEW. Renders ἐνέργεια at 1:19; 3:7,20; register-gap abstraction, parallel to Kraft vo Gott.
Fellow Citizens
Approved rendering: Mitbürger / Hausleit vo Gott
Transliteration: Mitbiaga / Hausleit vom Gott
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Original: συμπολῖται / οἰκεῖοι τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Church
NEW. Renders συμπολῖται/οἰκεῖοι τοῦ θεοῦ at 2:19. Corporate-belonging language; low-medium collision risk.
Cornerstone Temple
Approved rendering: Eckstein / heiliger Tempel
Transliteration: Eckstoa / hoaliga Tempel
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: ἀκρογωνιαῖος / ναὸς ἅγιος
Category: Church
NEW. Renders ἀκρογωνιαῖος/ναὸς ἅγιος at 2:20-21. No living Bavarian temple architecture; strong general church-building association reinforces the baseline’s documented Kirch-building default, so the corporate-people sense requires deliberate teaching alongside this metaphor.
Dwelling Place
Approved rendering: Wohnung Gottes
Transliteration: Wohnung vom Gott
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: κατοικητήριον
Category: Church
NEW. Renders κατοικητήριον at 2:22, the church as a Spirit-indwelt dwelling place. Low-medium collision; straightforward extension of the temple metaphor.
Building Up
Approved rendering: d’Erbauung vom Leib
Transliteration: d’Erbauung vom Leib
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: οἰκοδομή
Category: Church
NEW extension of the Romans-baseline mutual-edification pattern. Renders οἰκοδομή at 2:21; 4:12,16,29, now explicitly applied to the body-of-Christ metaphor.
Sealed
Approved rendering: versiegelt
Transliteration: versiegelt
Doctrine: Election and Predestination in Christ
Original: σφραγίζω
Category: Election
NEW. Renders σφραγίζω at 1:13; 4:30. Must convey the ownership/security sense, not merely ‘closed up’. CAUTION: ‘Heilige Versiegelung’ is a distinct New Apostolic Church sacrament administered exclusively by living apostles; must never suggest sealing is a churchly ordinance rather than the Spirit’s own act at the moment of belief. Flag for theologian review wherever co-occurring with ‘Apostl’ in the same passage (e.g. ch.1).
Guarantee
Approved rendering: Pfand
Transliteration: Pfand
Doctrine: Election and Predestination in Christ
Original: ἀρραβών
Category: Election
NEW. Renders ἀρραβών at 1:14, the Spirit as first installment of the believer’s inheritance. Genuinely live modern Bavarian word (bottle/container deposit) risks trivializing the Spirit’s guarantee into a mundane commercial transaction; frame explicitly as God’s own guarantee of a certain future.
Stewardship
Approved rendering: Plan / Hausordnung Gottes
Transliteration: Plan / Hausordnung vom Gott
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Original: οἰκονομία
Category: Mystery
NEW. Renders οἰκονομία at 1:10; 3:2,9. Register-gap abstraction; low folk collision.
Revelation
Approved rendering: Offenbarung
Transliteration: Offenbarung
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Original: ἀποκάλυψις
Category: Mystery
NEW. Renders ἀποκάλυψις at 1:17; 3:3. Standard, liturgically familiar borrowed term.
Boldness
Approved rendering: Zuversicht / Freimut
Transliteration: Zuvasicht / Freimuat
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Original: παρρησία
Category: Mystery
NEW. Renders παρρησία at 3:12; 6:19-20. Low-medium collision; culturally legible concept of confident speech.
Inner Man
Approved rendering: s’Inwendige / innerer Mensch
Transliteration: s’Inwendige / inera Mensch
Doctrine: Walking in Newness of Life
Original: ἔσω ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders ἔσω ἄνθρωπος at 3:16, the locus of the Spirit’s strengthening; anticipates the new-self language of 4:22-24.
Rooted And Grounded
Approved rendering: verwurzelt und gegründet
Transliteration: verwuazelt und gegründet
Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Original: ἐρριζωμένοι καὶ τεθεμελιωμένοι
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders ἐρριζωμένοι καὶ τεθεμελιωμένοι at 3:17, rooted in love (Liab). Horticultural-architectural double metaphor; translates naturally, low collision.
Filled With The Spirit
Approved rendering: erfüllt sei vom Geist
Transliteration: efüllt sei vom Gaist
Doctrine: Walking in Newness of Life
Original: πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι at 5:18, contrasted with drunkenness; shares its root with Füll/πλήρωμα family, and is the empowering source of the household-code obedience that follows.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: Beschneidung / Unbeschnittne
Transliteration: Beschneidung / Unbeschnittne
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Original: περιτομή / ἀκροβυστία
Category: Unity
NEW. Renders περιτομή/ἀκροβυστία at 2:11. Requires explanatory OT/covenant background teaching; render literally rather than paraphrase, to keep the concrete Jew/Gentile identity marker visible.
Strangers
Approved rendering: Fremde und Ausländer
Transliteration: Fremde und Auslända
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Original: ξένοι / πάροικοι
Category: Unity
NEW. Renders ξένοι/πάροικοι at 2:12,19, the Gentiles’ former exclusion from covenant belonging. Legible, low-medium collision.
Dividing Wall
Approved rendering: Trennwand
Transliteration: Trennwand
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Original: μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ
Category: Unity
NEW. Renders μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ at 2:14, the Second Temple’s Jew/Gentile partition used metaphorically. Historical-temple background must be taught alongside; the metaphor of a wall coming down translates naturally on its own.
Enmity
Approved rendering: Feindschaft
Transliteration: Feindschoft
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Original: ἔχθρα
Category: Unity
NEW. Renders ἔχθρα at 2:14,16, active mutual hostility destroyed by Christ’s cross. Must convey active hostility, not merely passive difference.
Access
Approved rendering: Zugang
Transliteration: Zuagang
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Original: προσαγωγή
Category: Unity
NEW. Renders προσαγωγή at 2:18; 3:12, both Jew and Gentile sharing one access to the Father through the Spirit. Low-medium collision.
One Flesh
Approved rendering: oa Fleisch
Transliteration: oa Fleisch
Doctrine: Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Original: μία σάρξ
Category: Household
NEW. Renders μία σάρξ at 5:31, the Genesis 2:24 quotation grounding the household code in the creation ordinance of marriage. Low-medium collision.
Devil
Approved rendering: Teufel
Transliteration: Teifl
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Original: διάβολος
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW. Renders διάβολος at 4:27; 6:11. Collides with the folk-carnival devil figure of Krampus/Perchten processions, popularly experienced as a costumed, almost comic folk character; teaching contexts must distinguish Paul’s serious spiritual adversary from this folkloric association. Also relevant: Christadelphian denial of a personal devil must not be echoed.
Ministry Gift
Approved rendering: Gnodngob’n
Transliteration: Gnadengaben
Doctrine: Gifts for Building Up the Church
Rejected alternatives: a separate fourth coined word for ‘gift’ (rejected: unnecessary proliferation)
Original: δωρεά / δόμα
Category: Ministry
NEW usage folded into the existing baseline Gnodngob’n family. Renders δωρεά/δόμα at 4:7-8, Christ’s gifts to the church specifically manifested in the fivefold ministry offices of 4:11. Keep distinct from Gschenk (δῶρον, 2:8, salvation itself).
Equipping
Approved rendering: Ausrüstung
Transliteration: Ausrüstung
Doctrine: Gifts for Building Up the Church
Original: καταρτισμός
Category: Ministry
NEW. Renders καταρτισμός at 4:12, preparing believers for ministry service. Shares its root (‘rüsten’) with the ch.6 armor vocabulary — a useful pedagogical link between the two doctrines.
Workmanship
Approved rendering: Gschöpf
Transliteration: Gschöpf
Doctrine: Walking in Newness of Life
Original: ποίημα
Category: Walking
NEW. Renders ποίημα at 2:10, resolving the works/grace tension: not saved by works, but God’s own deliberate handiwork made for good works. Must convey dignified craftsmanship, not a diminished ‘mere object’.
Created
Approved rendering: gschaffa
Transliteration: geschaffen
Doctrine: Christian Identity in Christ
Original: κτίζω
Category: Walking
NEW. Renders κτίζω at 2:10; 4:24, a new-creation act paralleling the original creation. Ties to the Romans-baseline Christian-identity-in-Christ framework; new spiritual creation, not mere moral improvement of the old self.
Boast
Approved rendering: sich rühma
Transliteration: si rühma
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Original: καυχάομαι
Category: Salvation
NEW. Renders καυχάομαι at 2:9, the purpose clause: grace excludes boasting precisely because it excludes works as the basis of salvation. Culturally legible concept, low-medium collision.
Children Of Light Darkness
Approved rendering: Kinder vom Liacht / Finsternis
Transliteration: Kinda vom Liacht / Finstanis
Doctrine: Walking in Newness of Life
NEW. Renders τέκνα φωτός/σκότος at 5:8, identity-based ethics: live as what you now are, not what you were. Low-medium collision.
Low Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: Apostl
Transliteration: Apoastl
Doctrine: Apostleship
