Cross-Reference Analysis

Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — 2 Timothy — English → Japanese

Methodology Note

This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 3: a full cross-reference matrix of every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological connection, and every parallel to other curricula in this language package — principally the Romans baseline — found across the entire book of 2 Timothy, chapter by chapter, first to last. The core passage (2 Timothy 3:14–4:5) is treated with the same verse-level granularity as the surrounding chapters; it is the theological anchor of the curriculum, not the boundary of this analysis’s scope.

Citation format. All citations in this internal analysis document use the normalizable English format required for Phase 1 artifacts: full English book name, chapter, colon, verse (or verse range with a hyphen) — e.g., 2 Timothy 3:16, Romans 1:3-4, Psalm 62:12, Numbers 16:5, Genesis 15:6. No abbreviations. This is distinct from the Japanese-facing citation convention already established in the baseline (12_ai_translation_requirements.md), which requires Japanese book names and the format ローマ人への手紙3:23. Section 5 below provides the English-to-Japanese book-name mapping table required to translate every citation in this document into that Japanese convention at Phase 2.

Connection-type taxonomy used throughout:

  • Quotation — a verbatim or near-verbatim citation of an OT text.
  • Allusion — a clear but not verbatim echo of an OT/NT text or concept.
  • Typology — an OT person, office, or event functioning as a pattern fulfilled or echoed in the NT.
  • Parallel (Romans) — a passage in 2 Timothy that shares vocabulary, doctrine, or rhetorical structure with a specific Romans passage already governed by the baseline Language Package, requiring rendering consistency.
  • Parallel (NT, other) — a passage sharing content with another NT book outside Romans, noted for completeness but without a rendering-consistency mandate from this language package.
  • Background — biographical/historical material with no direct doctrinal or intertextual weight.

PART A — Cross-Reference Matrix by Chapter

Chapter 1

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionConnection TypeTranslation Sensitivity
2 Timothy 1:5Faithful Transmission of the GospelLois, Eunice, TimothyActs 16:1; Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (teach the words to your children)Allusion/backgroundLow. Generational transmission language; distinguish sincere, content-fixed faith transmission from Japan’s generic ancestral household religious continuity (butsudan family observance) — the content transmitted is a fixed gospel, not an evolving family piety.
2 Timothy 1:6The Charge to Preach the Word (ministry commissioning)Timothy, Paul; typologically Moses/JoshuaNumbers 27:18-23; Deuteronomy 34:9 (Moses commissions Joshua by the laying on of hands)TypologyMedium. “Laying on of hands” (手を置くこと) must not be conflated with Japanese Buddhist master-to-disciple dharma transmission (法灯継承, 以心伝心) — the same caution already flagged for παραθήκη in 08_core_glossary.md applies here: this is commissioning for a fixed task, not confirmation of a disciple’s own attained realization.
2 Timothy 1:9Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; Grace (baseline)none namedRomans 9:11 (“not because of works but because of him who calls”); Ephesians 1:4; Titus 3:5Parallel (Romans)Critical. Reuse baseline 恵み (grace), 召された/召し (called/calling) exactly; this verse is a compressed restatement of Romans 9:11’s not-by-works logic.
2 Timothy 1:10Deity of Christ / Incarnation (baseline); Assurance of RewardChristIsaiah 25:8 (“he will swallow up death forever”); 1 Corinthians 15:54-57Allusion + Parallel (NT)High. First occurrence of ἐπιφάνεια (see glossary #6); render consistently with 4:1 and 4:8. Resurrection language reuses baseline 復活.
2 Timothy 1:12Assurance of Reward; Perseverance under SufferingPaulRomans 8:38-39 (nothing can separate)Parallel (Romans)Critical. Assurance grounded in God’s unshakable character/ability, not an on-giri repayment relationship — same caution as Romans 8:38-39.
2 Timothy 1:16-18Perseverance under SufferingOnesiphorus(no direct OT/NT quotation)BackgroundLow.

2 Timothy 2:2Faithful Transmission of the GospelPaul, Timothy, “faithful men”2 Thessalonians 2:15; 1 Corinthians 11:2 (tradition received and delivered)Parallel (NT, other)High. Verb form of παραθήκη (entrust, #17 in glossary); render with the same 委ねる root used for the noun form in 1:12, 1:14.
2 Timothy 2:4-6Perseverance under Sufferingsoldier, athlete, farmer1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (athletic imagery); James 5:7 (farmer’s patience)Parallel (NT, other)Medium. Keep athletic vocabulary consistent through to 4:7-8’s crown imagery.
2 Timothy 2:8Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; Messianic Promise (baseline)Jesus Christ, DavidRomans 1:3-4 (near-verbatim gospel-content summary)Direct Parallel (Romans)Critical. Must render ダビデの子孫 (seed of David) and 復活 (resurrection) identically to the baseline Romans rendering — this verse is functionally a compressed restatement of Romans 1:3-4 and must read as the same doctrinal formula in both curricula.
2 Timothy 2:11-13Assurance of Reward; Faithful Transmission (creedal formula)none named (early creedal/hymnic fragment)Romans 6:8 (“if we have died with Christ, we believe we will also live with him”)Direct Parallel (Romans)Critical. Render 共に死ぬ/共に生きる consistently with Romans 6:8’s established vocabulary.
2 Timothy 2:12bAssurance of Reward (negative)noneMatthew 10:33 (“whoever denies me before men, I will deny him”)Parallel (NT, other)High.
2 Timothy 2:13Assurance of RewardnoneNumbers 23:19 (“God is not man, that he should lie”); Romans 3:3-4 (“let God be true though every one were a liar”)Allusion + Parallel (Romans)Critical. God’s faithfulness here is unilateral and self-grounded (“he cannot deny himself”), not a reciprocal on-giri debt; must not be softened into a general truism about mutual fidelity.
2 Timothy 2:15Guarding Sound DoctrineTimothyRomans 14:18 (“approved by men,” contrastive echo — here approved by God)Parallel (Romans)Medium.
2 Timothy 2:19aGuarding Sound Doctrine; Assurance of RewardnoneNumbers 16:5 (LXX: “the Lord knows those who are his own”)Quotation/AllusionHigh. Connects forward to Romans 8:29 and Romans 11:2’s foreknowledge language; flag for theologian review as a formal OT quotation embedded in a doctrinal statement.
2 Timothy 2:19bGuarding Sound DoctrinenoneNumbers 16:26 / Isaiah 52:11 (“touch no unclean thing”) / Leviticus 24:16 (source disputed among commentators)Quotation/Allusion (textual source uncertain)Medium. Note the source-uncertainty explicitly in any teaching material; render the general sense (“depart from wickedness”) without overcommitting to one specific OT source text.
2 Timothy 2:20-21Guarding Sound DoctrinenoneRomans 9:21 (potter/vessel imagery); Jeremiah 18:1-6 (potter and clay)Parallel (Romans) + OT typologyMedium. Vessel imagery (器) is low-collision and natural in Japanese.
2 Timothy 2:22Guarding Sound DoctrinenoneRomans 6:12-13 (flee sin, present yourselves for righteousness)Parallel (Romans)High. Reuse baseline 義, 信仰, 平安 exactly.

Where individual vice terms overlap with Romans 1:29-31’s list, use the same Japanese renderings already fixed for those Romans terms (e.g., 高慢=arrogant, 冒涜的=blasphemous) for full cross-curriculum consistency.

Acts 13:8 (Elymas, NT parallel)Allusion to Exodus narrative via extra-biblical named traditionMedium. Transliterate names per standard convention (ヤンネス, ヤンブレ); brief note that these names are extra-biblical Jewish tradition, not found in the Exodus text itself.

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionConnection TypeTranslation Sensitivity
2 Timothy 4:6Assurance of RewardPaulPhilippians 2:17 (same “poured out as a libation” phrase, σπένδομαι); Numbers 15:5, 10; Exodus 29:40 (OT drink-offering)Direct Quotation-level Parallel (Philippians) + OT typologyMedium-High. Avoid drawing any equivalence to Shinto ritual sake-offerings (o-miki); the referent is the OT/Jewish sacrificial system specifically.
2 Timothy 4:7Assurance of RewardPaul1 Corinthians 9:24-26; Philippians 3:12-14 (press on toward the goal); Hebrews 12:1 (the race set before us)Parallel (NT, other)High. Athletic-imagery consistency required through to 4:8.
2 Timothy 4:8Assurance of RewardChrist (the righteous judge)Psalm 62:12 (LXX Psalm 61:13); James 1:12 (“crown of life”); Revelation 2:10; 1 Peter 5:4 (“crown of glory”); 1 Corinthians 9:25Parallel (NT, multiple)Critical. See glossary #7 (crown of righteousness) — combines the Critical baseline term 義 with the new term 栄冠.
2 Timothy 4:9-13Faithful Transmission of the Gospel (personal/background)Demas, Crescens, Titus, Luke, Mark, Tychicus, Carpus(no direct OT/NT quotation)BackgroundLow.
2 Timothy 4:10Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days (negative example)Demas1 John 2:15 (“do not love the world”)Parallel (NT, other)Medium. Deliberate lexical echo with 4:8: the same verb ἀγαπάω (“loved”) is used of loving Christ’s appearing (v.8, positive) and Demas loving “this present age” (v.10, negative) — must be rendered with the identical Japanese verb (愛した) in both places to preserve Paul’s intentional contrast.
2 Timothy 4:14Assurance of Reward (negative/divine justice)Alexander the coppersmithPsalm 62:12 (LXX 61:13, “you will render to each according to his works”); Proverbs 24:12; Romans 2:6 (quoting the same Psalm)Direct Parallel (Romans)Critical. Must render “the Lord will repay him according to his deeds” consistently with however Romans 2:6 renders the same underlying Psalm 62:12 formula (主が…その行いに応じて報いてくださる) — this is the same OT quotation surfacing in both curricula and must not diverge.
2 Timothy 4:16-17Perseverance under Suffering; Assurance of RewardPaulPsalm 22:21 (deliverance from “the mouth of the lion/dogs”); Daniel 6:20-23 (Daniel rescued from the lions’ den, typology)Allusion + TypologyHigh. The lion’s-mouth image is not native to Japanese cultural imagery (lions are not indigenous to Japan) and may need brief contextualizing for clarity, though this is a comprehension issue rather than a doctrinal-collision risk; the Daniel typology is a strong, teachable parallel worth foregrounding in curriculum materials.
2 Timothy 4:17bThe Charge to Preach the Word; Faithful Transmission of the GospelPaulPsalm 71:15-16, 18 (proclaiming God’s righteousness to all generations); Acts 9:15 (Paul’s commissioning to the Gentiles)AllusionMedium.
2 Timothy 4:18Assurance of RewardnoneMatthew 6:13 (Lord’s Prayer, “deliver us from evil”); Romans 11:36; Romans 16:27 (Pauline closing doxology form, “to whom be glory forever and ever, Amen”)Parallel (NT, other) + Direct Parallel (Romans doxology form)High. Reuse baseline 神の国 with the mandatory Romans 14:17 anchoring note; the doxology’s Japanese phrasing should echo the closing-doxology form already used for Romans 11:36 and 16:27 for cross-curriculum consistency (see 10_biblical_theme_map.md, doxology thread).
2 Timothy 4:19-22Faithful Transmission of the Gospel (background)Priscilla, Aquila, household of Onesiphorus, Erastus, Trophimus, Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, TimothyActs 18:2 (Priscilla and Aquila)Background/Parallel (NT, other)Low.

PART B — Core Passage (2 Timothy 3:14–4:5): OT/NT Connections in Detail

The core passage carries a dense concentration of citations already surfaced in Part A’s chapter-boundary notes above; this section consolidates and expands them for the passage’s dedicated theological weight.

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionConnection TypeTranslation Sensitivity
2 Timothy 3:14Faithful Transmission of the GospelTimothy, Paul, Lois, Eunice (implied)(no direct quotation; consolidates 1:5, 3:10)Internal cross-reference within 2 TimothyLow.
2 Timothy 3:15Inspiration and Sufficiency of ScriptureTimothyPsalm 119:9-11; Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (childhood formation in Scripture)Allusion/thematic parallelMedium.
2 Timothy 3:16Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripturenone2 Peter 1:20-21 (“no prophecy… men spoke from God”); Psalm 19:7-11; Hebrews 4:12Parallel (NT, other) + thematic OT parallelCritical. Central doctrinal anchor of the whole curriculum; see glossary #1 (θεόπνευστος). Flag every occurrence for human theologian review without exception, per 08_core_glossary.md.
2 Timothy 3:17Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture”the man of God” (title echoing OT prophetic office, e.g., Elijah, Moses)1 Kings 17:18 and other OT “man of God” texts (typological title background)Typology (title)Medium-High.
2 Timothy 4:1The Charge to Preach the Word; Assurance of RewardChristActs 10:42; Romans 2:16; Romans 14:9-10 (Christ as judge of the living and the dead)Direct Parallel (Romans)Critical. Render κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς consistently with however Romans 14:9-10 renders this same judgment formula.
2 Timothy 4:2The Charge to Preach the WordnoneIsaiah 58:1 (“cry aloud… declare”); Ezekiel 3:17-19; Ezekiel 33:1-9 (watchman motif)Typology/AllusionMedium. The OT watchman typology (Ezekiel) is a strong, low-risk teaching bridge for “in season and out of season” urgency and may be foregrounded in curriculum materials.
2 Timothy 4:3-4Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last DaysnoneIsaiah 30:9-11 (“who say to the seers, ‘do not see’… speak to us smooth things”); Jeremiah 5:31 (false prophets prophesy falsely, and the people love it so)Allusion (classic OT prophetic-rejection pattern)High. This is a strong OT prophetic-literature parallel to the “itching ears” dynamic and a valuable teaching bridge, but must not be conflated with Japan’s 占い (fortune-telling/divination) framework already flagged Medium risk for the baseline’s prophet/prophecy entries — the OT pattern in view is rejection of God’s true spokesmen, not divinatory prediction.
2 Timothy 4:5The Charge to Preach the Word; Perseverance under SufferingnoneRomans 10:14-15 (“how will they hear without a preacher… how beautiful the feet of those who preach”)Direct Parallel (Romans)Medium. Render 伝道者 (evangelist) and the underlying “sending/preaching” logic consistently with Romans 10:14-15’s established framing.

PART C — Messianic References

PassageMessianic ContentConnection TypeTranslation Sensitivity
2 Timothy 2:8”Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David”Direct fulfillment statement, near-verbatim parallel to Romans 1:3-4Critical. Must match Romans baseline rendering of ダビデの子孫 and 復活 exactly.
2 Timothy 1:10”the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death”Fulfillment allusion to Isaiah 25:8High. See ἐπιφάνεια entry (glossary #6).
2 Timothy 4:1Christ as the one “who is to judge the living and the dead,” identified with “his appearing and his kingdom”Messianic judge/king motif; cf. Isaiah 11:3-5 (messianic judgment prophecy)Critical. Ties together Lordship of Christ, Kingdom of God (baseline), and ἐπιφάνεια.
2 Timothy 4:8Christ as “the righteous judge” awarding “the crown of righteousness”Messianic judgeship consummated at the Second ComingCritical. See glossary #7.

PART D — Typological Connections

OT Type2 Timothy Fulfillment/EchoPassage(s)Translation Sensitivity
Moses commissions Joshua by laying on of hands as his successor (Numbers 27:18-23; Deuteronomy 34:9)Paul commissions Timothy through the laying on of hands and a charge to continue the ministry2 Timothy 1:6, 4:1-5Medium. Must not be assimilated to Japanese dharma-lineage succession models (see 08 glossary παραθήκη note); the “successor” pattern here is guardianship of fixed content, not attainment-confirmation.
Elijah’s mantle passed to Elisha; Elijah’s departure (2 Kings 2:1-14)Paul’s imminent departure (“the time of my departure has come,” 4:6) and transfer of ministry responsibility to Timothy2 Timothy 4:6-8 (cf. 1:6, 2:2)Low-Medium. A fruitful teaching parallel (departing servant, continuing ministry through a successor) with low collision risk if introduced only as an illustrative pattern, not a direct one-to-one identification.
Daniel delivered from the lions’ den (Daniel 6:16-23)Paul rescued “from the lion’s mouth”2 Timothy 4:17High. See Part A, 4:16-17 note above.
The OT sacrificial drink-offering (libation) poured out alongside the burnt offering (Numbers 15:5, 10; Exodus 29:40)Paul’s self-description as “poured out as a libation”2 Timothy 4:6 (cf. Philippians 2:17)Medium-High. See glossary #22; avoid Shinto o-miki equivalence.
The Davidic covenant promise of an enduring royal line (2 Samuel 7:12-16)“Jesus Christ… the offspring of David”2 Timothy 2:8Critical. Reuse baseline ダビデの子孫/Davidic Covenant apparatus exactly.
Egyptian magicians opposing Moses (Exodus 7:11-12, 22)Jannes and Jambres named as historical precedent for opposing God’s messenger2 Timothy 3:8Medium. See Part A, 3:8 note above.

PART E — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Parallels with Romans

Because 2 Timothy and Romans will both be studied within the same Japanese-language curriculum ecosystem, the following passages are identified as sharing either a direct OT quotation or a near-verbatim doctrinal formula with the Romans baseline. The Japanese rendering in 2 Timothy materials MUST match whatever rendering is fixed for the corresponding Romans passage; any deviation must be flagged for human theologian review before publication.

Assurance grounded in God’s character, not human effortRomans 8:38-392 Timothy 1:12Consistent 確信 (conviction/assurance) vocabulary; both passages must resist on-giri reciprocity framing per baseline Critical grace caution.

PART F — Citation Normalization: English-to-Japanese Book Name Mapping

All citations above use normalized English form for internal Phase 1 tracking. At Phase 2, every citation appearing in learner-facing material must be converted to its Shinkaiyaku Japanese book-name form per the baseline’s citation convention (書名 章:節, e.g., ローマ人への手紙3:23). The following table extends the baseline’s partial book-name list (Romans, Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk, Joel) to cover every book cited in this document:

Coverage Confirmation

All four chapters of 2 Timothy have been reviewed for OT quotations, allusions, messianic references, typology, and Romans-curriculum parallels:

  • Chapter 1 (1:1–18): reviewed. Key connections: Numbers 27/Deuteronomy 34 typology (1:6), Romans 9:11 parallel (1:9), Isaiah 25:8 allusion (1:10), Romans 8:38-39 parallel (1:12).
  • Chapter 2 (2:1–26): reviewed. Key connections: Romans 1:3-4 direct parallel (2:8), Romans 6:8 direct parallel (2:11-13), Numbers 16:5/16:26 quotation (2:19), Romans 9:21/Jeremiah 18 typology (2:20-21), Romans 6:12-13 parallel (2:22).
  • Chapter 3 (3:1–13 reviewed here; 3:14–4:5 core passage covered in full in Part B): reviewed. Key connections: Romans 1:29-31 direct parallel (3:1-5), Exodus 7 allusion via Jannes/Jambres (3:8), Psalm 34:19 allusion (3:11).
  • Chapter 4 (4:6–22 reviewed here; 4:1–5 core passage covered in full in Part B): reviewed. Key connections: Philippians 2:17/OT libation typology (4:6), Psalm 62:12/Romans 2:6 direct parallel (4:14), Daniel 6 typology (4:17), Romans 11:36/16:27 doxology parallel (4:18).

No chapter was found to contain zero cross-reference material; every chapter of 2 Timothy is textually dense with OT/NT intertextuality and Romans-curriculum parallels, consistent with the letter’s character as a compressed, citation-rich final charge.
