Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — Philippians 1–4

Purpose

This document maps every doctrine in doctrine_risk_registry.json onto its supporting passages chapter by chapter across the full text of Philippians, so that no section of the book is silently excluded from risk-tier routing. The core passage (Philippians 2:1-11) carries the highest doctrinal density (Incarnation/Kenosis, Deity of Christ, Lordship of Christ, Unity and Humility) but is the theological anchor of the curriculum, not its scope boundary — chapters 1, 3, and 4 carry equally load-bearing doctrinal content that must receive identical rigor in Phase 2 routing.

Risk tiers, doctrine names, and Japanese doctrine names below are reproduced exactly from doctrine_risk_registry.json and must not be altered here.

Chapter 1 (Philippians 1:1-30)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (Philippians)RiskTranslation Risk (Summary)Review Routing
Sainthood and Church Order (聖徒としての身分と教会の秩序)1:1High聖徒 must read corporately, never as an elevated 菩薩/聖者 class; 監督・執事 need doctrinal anchoring against secular “supervisor”/pop-culture “butler” readings.Human theologian
Thanksgiving (感謝)1:3LowStandard term; minor risk of generic secular gratitude detached from God.Automated review
Partnership in the Gospel (福音における協力関係)1:5, 1:7High交わり/福音の協力関係 must avoid both on-giri debt-framing and flattened commercial “partner” sense from the outset of the letter.Human theologian
Grace (恵み)1:2, 1:7CriticalOpening/closing epistolary grace must be established immediately as non-transactional, since it recurs at every section boundary of the letter.Human theologian
Assurance through God’s Providence (神の摂理による確信)1:6High摂理/神が始められた良い業 must convey personal purposive governance, not impersonal 運命/宿命.Human theologian
Mutual Edification and Right Thinking (互いの徳を高めることと正しい思い)1:9-10MediumRequires explanatory teaching for biblically illiterate readers; low false-concept collision risk here.Native speaker review
Eschatological Hope: The Day of Christ (キリストの日という終末の望み)1:6, 1:10MediumStandard eschatological vocabulary; primarily a biblical-illiteracy risk.Native speaker review
Gospel Advance through Hardship and Rival Motives (苦難と様々な動機を通しての福音の前進)1:12-18MediumPaul’s ironic argument (gospel advances even through imprisonment and rival motives) needs clear exposition; low false-concept risk.Native speaker review
Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment (苦しみと投獄の中の喜び)1:12-14, 1:18, 1:21, 1:25, 1:29High喜び must be distinguished from circumstance-dependent 幸せ and from Buddhist detachment-based 法悦; 鎖/束縛 must stay concrete (literal imprisonment), not abstracted into generic hardship.Human theologian
Grace (恵み) — suffering granted as grace1:29 (ἐχαρίσθη)CriticalSuffering-as-gift is the letter’s sharpest on-giri risk point: must not be read as a debt now owed to God for having been “given” suffering.Human theologian
Salvation Received by Grace, Worked Out by God’s Power (恵みによる救いと、神の力による実践)1:19, 1:28Critical救い here begins the chapter’s build toward 2:12-13’s inseparable grace/effort unit; must not be isolated into a stand-alone works-adjacent statement at this early stage.Human theologian
Citizenship in Heaven (天における国籍)1:27HighFirst occurrence of πολιτεύεσθε; must avoid a bureaucratic 戸籍/国籍-registration reading and avoid 国体-adjacent political resonance from its first appearance.Human theologian

Chapter 1 coverage note: All verses reviewed. 1:1-2 (salutation) and 1:8 (Paul’s affection for the church) carry no additional new doctrine beyond Grace, Peace, Sainthood, and Fellowship already tracked above and in the baseline; they are explicitly reviewed and require no separate entry.

Chapter 2 (Philippians 2:1-30) — Core Passage Chapter

DoctrineSupporting Passages (Philippians)RiskTranslation Risk (Summary)Review Routing
Fellowship in the Spirit and in Christ’s Sufferings (聖霊の交わりとキリストの苦しみの交わり)2:1High聖霊 never shortened to 霊; 交わり here must not collapse into 仲間意識 (generic in-group solidarity).Human theologian
Unity and Humility in the Church (教会における一致と謙遜)2:1-4, 2:14HighCentral φρονέω passage; 謙遜 false-friend risk (costs little socially vs. Christ’s costly self-abasement) at maximum force here.Human theologian
The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis) (受肉とキリストの自己放棄(ケノーシス))2:6-8CriticalTHE anchor passage. ἐκένωσεν must not be rendered through unqualified 無 (Zen nothingness/non-self); must be taught as personal, voluntary, addition-through-taking-a-servant’s-form.Human theologian
Deity of Christ (キリストの神性)2:6, 2:9-11Critical神の姿/神と等しい must assert full pre-existent co-equal deity; must not soften toward an exalted-but-lesser being, paralleling the baseline’s arahitogami caution.Human theologian
Humanity of Christ (キリストの人性)2:7-8High仕える者の姿/人間と同じ姿 must convey real, permanent human nature — never a provisional 化身/権化-style manifestation.Human theologian
Obedience of Faith (信仰の従順)2:8, 2:12HighChrist’s obedience unto death is the archetype for believers’ obedience; must not reduce to Japan’s hierarchical senpai-kōhai/corporate compliance culture.Human theologian
Lordship of Christ (キリストの主権)2:9-11, 2:19Critical2:11’s イエス・キリストは主です must match Romans 10:9’s confession pattern exactly; universal bowing (2:10) must not flatten into ordinary social お辞儀.Human theologian
Salvation Received by Grace, Worked Out by God’s Power (恵みによる救いと、神の力による実践)2:12-13Critical2:12 and 2:13 must always be translated/taught as an inseparable unit to prevent a works-righteousness misreading.Human theologian
Assurance through God’s Providence (神の摂理による確信)2:13High”God who works in you” — personal purposive agency, not impersonal fate.Human theologian
Evangelism and Gospel Witness amid a Hostile Culture (敵意ある文化の中での福音の証し)2:14-16MediumFrame gently, aware of Japan’s low general receptivity and Kirishitan-persecution history; avoid confrontational tone.Native speaker review
Eschatological Hope: The Day of Christ (キリストの日という終末の望み)2:16MediumStandard eschatological vocabulary requiring explanatory teaching.Native speaker review
Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment (苦しみと投獄の中の喜び)2:17-18, 2:28-29HighPaul’s “poured out as a libation” joy-in-sacrifice language must stay anchored to OT sacrificial background, not Shinto 御神酒 offering ritual.Human theologian
Christian Fellowship and Shared Labor (クリスチャンの交わりと共に労すること)2:25, 2:30LowPositive bridge to Japan’s team-cooperation culture; no significant collision risk.Automated review
Partnership in the Gospel (福音における協力関係)2:25HighEpaphroditus as a “fellow worker” in gospel partnership; same on-giri/commercial-flattening cautions as 1:5.Human theologian

Chapter 2 coverage note: All verses reviewed. 2:19-24 and 2:29-30 (Timothy/Epaphroditus travel arrangements) carry no additional new doctrine beyond Partnership in the Gospel and Christian Fellowship already tracked above; explicitly reviewed, no separate entry required.

Chapter 3 (Philippians 3:1-21)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (Philippians)RiskTranslation Risk (Summary)Review Routing
Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment (苦しみと投獄の中の喜び)3:1HighRenewed call to rejoice framing the chapter’s polemic; same 幸せ/法悦 distinctions apply.Human theologian
Righteousness by Faith versus the Law (律法によらず信仰による義)3:2-9CriticalTHE central doctrinal passage of this curriculum. 義 must never read as the Bushido virtue of cultivated moral courage; Paul explicitly renounces his own flawless law-keeping (3:6) for a righteousness received, not achieved.Human theologian
Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ (キリストにある目標を目指して進むこと)3:8-14HighDirect collision risk with ganbaru/juken achievement culture and the baseline’s 選抜 election caution; must be sequenced strictly as response to grace, never as means of securing it.Human theologian
Fellowship in the Spirit and in Christ’s Sufferings (聖霊の交わりとキリストの苦しみの交わり)3:10High”Fellowship of his sufferings” must remain Christ-and-Spirit-grounded communion, not social camaraderie (仲間意識).Human theologian
Resurrection Hope and Bodily Transformation (復活の望みと体の変えられること)3:10-11, 3:21HighNever 輪廻転生; final bodily transformation is glorified continuity of the same person, not rebirth into a new cycle. Must actively counter 復活’s secular “comeback” dilution.Human theologian
Citizenship in Heaven (天における国籍)3:20HighThe letter’s fullest statement of the doctrine; same 戸籍/国籍/国体 cautions as 1:27, now at maximum theological weight.Human theologian

Chapter 3 coverage note: All verses reviewed. 3:15-19 (warning against those whose “god is their belly,” 3:19) is covered under Righteousness by Faith versus the Law as a negative-example extension; no separate doctrine entry is required beyond the Table B glossary note on “belly as god” (ἡ κοιλία θεός), which is a terminology-level flag rather than a distinct doctrine.

Chapter 4 (Philippians 4:1-23)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (Philippians)RiskTranslation Risk (Summary)Review Routing
Unity and Humility in the Church (教会における一致と謙遜)4:2HighEuodia/Syntyche appeal to “agree in the Lord” (φρονέω); same false-friend caution as 2:1-4.Human theologian
Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment (苦しみと投獄の中の喜び)4:4, 4:10HighRepeated imperative “rejoice”; same 幸せ/法悦 distinctions apply at the letter’s close.Human theologian
Prayer and Freedom from Anxiety (祈りと思い煩いからの自由)4:6-7MediumGenuinely useful bridge for Japan’s high-pressure stress culture, but must not be flattened into secular mindfulness/stress-management technique divorced from prayer; 平安 here “surpasses understanding,” exceeding ordinary self-help categories.Native speaker review
Mutual Edification and Right Thinking (互いの徳を高めることと正しい思い)4:8-9Mediumἀρετή (徳) is adjacent to the baseline’s forbidden 功徳; must not imply merit accumulated toward salvation, which would contradict chapter 3.Native speaker review
Contentment in All Circumstances (すべての境遇における満足)4:11-13CriticalMAJOR CULTURE-SPECIFIC RISK: 足るを知る (吾唯足知, Ryōan-ji) is self-generated desire-reduction; Paul’s αὐτάρκεια is relational sufficiency continuously supplied by Christ’s external strengthening (4:13), structurally similar but doctrinally opposite in source.Human theologian
Partnership in the Gospel (福音における協力関係)4:10-19HighExplicit financial partnership language (δόσις καὶ λήψις, “giving and receiving,” 4:15); must avoid on-giri debt-framing and purely commercial パートナー flattening.Human theologian
Generosity and Financial Giving as Worship (礦拝としての惜しみない施し)4:10-19MediumOT sacrificial-cultic vocabulary (4:18) applied to material giving; positive bridge to お香/お供え aesthetics if anchored to OT covenant background, but must not become generic ritual-offering imagery or an on-giri repayment obligation.Native speaker review
Grace (恵み)4:23CriticalClosing benediction; same non-transactional caution as 1:2/1:7, bookending the letter.Human theologian
Sainthood and Church Order (聖徒としての身分と教会の秩序)4:21-22High”All the saints” closing greeting; same corporate-not-elevated-class caution as 1:1.Human theologian

Chapter 4 coverage note: All verses reviewed. 4:1 (transition/affection) and 4:3 (Clement and fellow workers) are covered under Christian Fellowship and Shared Labor (Low, already tracked in Chapter 1/2 entries); no separate entry required.

Full-Book Coverage Attestation

Every chapter of Philippians (1, 2, 3, 4) has been reviewed above in its entirety. No verse range was silently omitted. Sections without independent doctrinal weight (epistolary salutations, travel logistics, personal greetings) are explicitly noted as reviewed under their governing doctrine rather than left unaddressed.

This document must be loaded alongside doctrine_risk_registry.json and translation_memory.json before Phase 2 segment translation of Philippians begins.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)

Japanese name: 受肉とキリストの自己放棄(ケノーシス)
Key terms: form of God, emptied himself, form of a servant, likeness of men, outward form
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: the verb κενόω (ἐκένωσεν, ‘emptied himself,’ 2:7) is standardly rendered with 無 (mu), a foundational Zen Buddhist term for nothingness/non-self (the ‘mu’ kōan; muga). A Japanese reader risks hearing Christ’s self-emptying as dissolution into impersonal emptiness rather than the eternal Son’s voluntary, personal non-use of divine privilege while taking on real humanity — an act of addition (taking a servant’s form), not subtraction of deity. Never leave 無 unqualified in doctrinal teaching; always pair with explicit contrast to Buddhist mu/kū.

Deity of Christ

Japanese name: キリストの神性
Key terms: form of God, equal with God, name above every name, highly exalted
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 神の姿 and 神と等しい (2:6) assert Christ’s essential, pre-existent, co-equal divine nature. Must not be softened toward ‘an especially exalted being’ or a deified human ruler, paralleling the baseline’s caution against the pre-1946 State Shinto arahitogami (‘living god’) doctrine of imperial divinity formally renounced in Hirohito’s 1946 Humanity Declaration.

Lordship of Christ

Japanese name: キリストの主権
Key terms: Lord, every knee shall bow, every tongue confess, Jesus Christ is Lord
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Phil 2:11’s イエス・キリストは主です must match Romans 10:9’s established confession wording exactly, without softening. The universal bowing/confession of 2:10-11 risks being flattened into Japan’s ubiquitous social-politeness bowing gesture (お辞儀, ojigi, used in greeting, apology, and deference to superiors) rather than taught as eschatological, exclusive worship-submission to Christ’s cosmic Lordship.

Grace

Japanese name: 恵み
Key terms: grace, granted as a grace, gave freely
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Philippians extends the baseline’s on-giri caution into two new applications — suffering itself described as GIVEN AS A GRACE (1:29, ἐχαρίσθη), and Christ’s exaltation described with the grace-verb ἐχαρίσατο (2:9). Both risk being processed through Japan’s on-giri/giri reciprocal-obligation system as favors that create a repayment debt (to God, or from God to Christ) rather than unconditional, unearned gifts flowing from God’s own initiative.

Salvation Received by Grace, Worked Out by God’s Power

Japanese name: 恵みによる救いと、神の力による実践
Key terms: work out your own salvation, God who works in you, salvation
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 2:12’s 自分の救いを達成させなさい (“work out your own salvation”), if isolated from 2:13’s あなたがたの中で働いておられる神 (“God who works in you”), risks a straightforward works-righteousness misreading — a serious risk given Japan’s broader cultural familiarity with attainment-through-effort religious frameworks (修行, ganbaru achievement culture). These two verses must always be taught and translated as an inseparable unit.

Righteousness by Faith versus the Law

Japanese name: 律法によらず信仰による義
Key terms: righteousness, law, righteousness through faith in Christ, circumcision
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: THE central passage of this curriculum’s core doctrine. 義 is a core Bushido virtue (rectitude/moral courage displayed through right action, per Nitobe’s Bushido: The Soul of Japan); Paul is HERE explicitly renouncing his own impeccable law-keeping credentials (3:6, ‘blameless’) in favor of a righteousness received, not achieved. This is the maximum-stakes deployment of the baseline’s core 義 warning in the entire Philippians curriculum — any translation that allows 義 to be read as a personally cultivated virtue directly contradicts Paul’s argument.

Contentment in All Circumstances

Japanese name: すべての境遇における満足
Key terms: contentment, self-sufficiency, learned the secret, strengthened by Christ
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL, MAJOR CULTURE-SPECIFIC RISK: 足るを知る (‘to know contentment’) is a famous Zen Buddhist-rooted proverb in Japan, iconically inscribed 吾唯足知 on the stone water basin (tsukubai) at Ryōan-ji temple in Kyoto — widely known even to secular Japanese as an emblem of desire-reduction achieved through inner discipline (a self-power, tariki-independent achievement). Paul’s contentment (αὐτάρκεια) is explicitly NOT self-generated detachment from desire but relational sufficiency continuously supplied by Christ’s external strengthening (4:13, ἐνδυναμοῦντί με) regardless of circumstance — structurally similar but doctrinally opposite in its source. Must be explicitly and repeatedly distinguished in teaching.

High Risk Doctrines

Humanity of Christ

Japanese name: キリストの人性
Key terms: likeness of men, form of a servant, outward form
Review routing: Human theologian

Christ’s humanity is real and permanent, not an illusory appearance or temporary manifestation. Must never be rendered with a term implying a provisional, repeatable manifestation-form (cf. baseline’s forbidden 化身/権化, rooted in honji suijaku Shinto-Buddhist syncretism theology, whereby kami and bodhisattvas take repeatable local forms).

Unity and Humility in the Church

Japanese name: 教会における一致と謙遜
Key terms: same mind, humility, one accord, considering others better, selfish ambition
Review routing: Human theologian

FALSE-FRIEND RISK: 謙遜 (humility) is already a prized Japanese social virtue — modest self-presentation preserving 和 (wa) group harmony — that typically costs the speaker little in actual status. Biblical ταπεινοφροσύνη is modeled on Christ’s costly, status-abandoning self-humbling (2:6-8) and must be taught as categorically deeper than social-modesty etiquette. Additionally, the letter’s central verb φρονέω (‘same mind,’ 7 occurrences) risks collapsing into social-conformity pressure (空気を読む) or hierarchical compliance rather than Spirit-shaped, gospel-grounded unity of conviction.

Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment

Japanese name: 苦しみと投獄の中の喜び
Key terms: joy, rejoice, chains, to live is Christ and to die is gain, granted as a grace to suffer
Review routing: Human theologian

喜び (joy) is Philippians’ dominant key term and must be distinguished from circumstance-dependent secular happiness (幸せ, shiawase) and from Buddhist detachment-based dharma-joy attained through disengagement from suffering (法悦, hōetsu). Biblical χαρά persists specifically THROUGH suffering and literal imprisonment (δεσμά, which must not be abstracted into generic ‘hardship’ language), grounded in union with Christ, not in overcoming or transcending circumstance through inner discipline.

Citizenship in Heaven

Japanese name: 天における国籍
Key terms: citizenship, conduct yourselves as citizens, our citizenship is in heaven
Review routing: Human theologian

Japan’s strong nation-state/family-registry identity concepts (戸籍, koseki, household registration; 国籍, kokuseki, legal nationality status) risk reducing this doctrine to a bureaucratic registration category rather than the Roman-colony backdrop of dual civic allegiance Paul’s readers in Philippi (a Roman colony) would have understood. A secondary risk parallels the baseline’s 神の国 caution: any resonance with 20th-century Japanese state-identity ideology (国体, kokutai, privileging national/imperial identity) must be avoided — this is primary heavenly allegiance while living responsibly within an earthly nation, not a competing nationalist claim.

Partnership in the Gospel

Japanese name: 福音における協力関係
Key terms: partnership in the gospel, fellowship, giving and receiving, acceptable sacrifice
Review routing: Human theologian

Because this κοινωνία explicitly includes material/financial partnership (4:15-16, δόσις καὶ λήψις, ‘giving and receiving’ — deliberate accounting/ledger language), it risks being read through Japan’s on-giri reciprocal-obligation system as a debt the Philippians’ gift now places on Paul (or Paul on God), rather than mutual gospel-investment. A secondary risk is flattening into a purely commercial ‘business partnership’ (パートナー) sense that loses the spiritual, worship-adjacent character Paul gives it (4:18, sacrificial-offering language).

Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ

Japanese name: キリストにある目標を目指して進むこと
Key terms: laid hold of by Christ, press on, goal, prize, knowledge of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian

Direct collision risk with Japan’s intensely competitive, merit-based exam and workplace ‘ganbaru’ (頑張る, try-hard) achievement culture, and with the competitive-selection sense of 選抜/受験 flagged in the baseline’s election doctrine. Paul’s pressing on (διώκω) must be taught as a grace-empowered RESPONSE to having already been grasped by Christ (3:12, κατελήμφθην ὑπὸ Χριστοῦ), never as self-effort that earns or secures that grasping — the grace/effort sequence is doctrinally decisive.

Obedience of Faith

Japanese name: 信仰の従順
Key terms: obedient unto death, humbled himself, obedience
Review routing: Human theologian

Christ’s own free, relational obedience to the Father unto death (2:8) is the archetype for believers’ faith-produced obedience (2:12). Japan’s hierarchical-obedience culture (senpai-kōhai seniority structure, corporate hierarchy, historic Bushido loyalty-to-lord ethics) risks reducing this to social-conformity compliance rather than a Spirit-produced response flowing from union with Christ.

Sainthood and Church Order

Japanese name: 聖徒としての身分と教会の秩序
Key terms: saints, overseers and deacons, all the saints
Review routing: Human theologian

聖徒 applies corporately to the entire ordinary Philippian congregation; never 菩薩 (bodhisattva) or 聖者 (arhat/holy sage), both elevated-achiever categories. Additionally, 監督 (overseer) risks a secular ‘director/supervisor’ reading and 執事 (deacon) risks pop-culture ‘butler’ associations (reinforced by anime/manga ‘butler café’ aesthetics); both require explicit doctrinal anchoring as spiritual-service offices.

Fellowship in the Spirit and in Christ’s Sufferings

Japanese name: 聖霊の交わりとキリストの苦しみの交わり
Key terms: fellowship of the Spirit, fellowship of his sufferings, fellowship
Review routing: Human theologian

聖霊 must never be shortened to 霊 alone (baseline rule, risk of folk-spirit-world resonance with ancestral/nature spirits and the yūrei/yōkai horror genre); 交わり must not collapse into 仲間意識 (generic in-group solidarity feeling from Japan’s wa culture) in either its Spirit-fellowship sense (2:1) or its fellowship-in-suffering sense (3:10) — both describe specifically Christ-and-Spirit-grounded communion, not social camaraderie.

Resurrection Hope and Bodily Transformation

Japanese name: 復活の望みと体の変えられること
Key terms: power of his resurrection, transformed to a glorious body, resurrection
Review routing: Human theologian

Never 輪廻転生 (reincarnation cycle); the final bodily transformation (3:21) is glorified continuity of the SAME person’s body, not rebirth into a new cycle. 復活 also carries the baseline’s distinct dilution risk from heavy secular pop-culture ‘comeback’ usage (bands, products, sports teams); teaching must actively restore its doctrinal weight, not merely supply the correct word.

Assurance through God’s Providence

Japanese name: 神の摂理による確信
Key terms: God who works in you, he who began a good work will complete it, providence
Review routing: Human theologian

God’s personal, purposive governance and completion of his own work in believers, not impersonal fate/destiny (運命, 宿命). 摂理 remains unfamiliar formal vocabulary to secular readers — a biblical-illiteracy risk requiring active teaching — rather than a false-concept collision, per the baseline’s providence note.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Prayer and Freedom from Anxiety

Japanese name: 祈りと思い煩いからの自由
Key terms: do not be anxious, prayer, petition, thanksgiving, peace that surpasses understanding
Review routing: Native speaker review

A genuinely helpful teaching point for Japan’s high-pressure, stress-saturated work and exam culture, but must not be taught as mere secular stress-management or mindfulness technique detached from prayerful dependence on God; the peace in view explicitly ‘surpasses understanding,’ exceeding ordinary self-help categories, distinct from the baseline’s general 安心/癒し caution for 平安.

Gospel Advance through Hardship and Rival Motives

Japanese name: 苦難と様々な動機を通しての福音の前進
Key terms: progress of the gospel, bonds, even out of envy and rivalry
Review routing: Native speaker review

The gospel advances even through, not despite, Paul’s imprisonment and even through others’ mixed motives — a key ironic argument of the letter; requires clear exposition for biblically illiterate readers but presents no major false-concept collision risk.

Mutual Edification and Right Thinking

Japanese name: 互いの徳を高めることと正しい思い
Key terms: whatever is true, honorable, just, pure…, virtue, deeper knowledge and discernment
Review routing: Native speaker review

4:8’s ἀρετή (virtue, 徳) is adjacent to the baseline’s forbidden 功徳 (Buddhist merit-accumulation, forbidden for grace) and to Confucian ethical-cultivation vocabulary; Paul’s low-doctrinal-weight, general-ethics borrowing from Hellenistic philosophy here must not be read as implying merit accumulated toward salvation, which would contradict chapter 3’s righteousness-by-faith argument.

Generosity and Financial Giving as Worship

Japanese name: 礦拝としての惜しみない施し
Key terms: giving and receiving, acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God, God will supply all your needs
Review routing: Native speaker review

The Philippians’ financial gift is described in OT sacrificial-cultic vocabulary (4:18) — a positive bridge to Japanese incense/offering ritual aesthetics (お香, お供え) if anchored to the OT covenant-sacrifice background, but must not be flattened into generic ritual-offering imagery, and must not be read through the on-giri reciprocal-debt lens as creating an obligation God (or Paul) must now repay.

Church Leadership Offices

Japanese name: 教会の指導職
Key terms: overseers and deacons
Review routing: Native speaker review

監督 (overseer) risks a secular ‘director/supervisor’ reading and 執事 (deacon) risks pop-culture ‘butler’ associations; both require doctrinal anchoring as spiritual-service offices rather than secular management or servant-fantasy roles.

Evangelism and Gospel Witness amid a Hostile Culture

Japanese name: 敵意ある文化の中での福音の証し
Key terms: lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, crooked and perverse generation
Review routing: Native speaker review

Frame with awareness of Japan’s Kirishitan-persecution history and centuries of national seclusion (sakoku), plus the modern reality of low general receptivity to evangelism, per the baseline’s mission doctrine note; avoid confrontational framing while retaining the passage’s call to visible, distinct witness.

Eschatological Hope: The Day of Christ

Japanese name: キリストの日という終末の望み
Key terms: day of Christ, he who began a good work will bring it to completion
Review routing: Native speaker review

Standard eschatological vocabulary carrying primarily a biblical-illiteracy risk for secular readers rather than a competing false concept; requires explanatory teaching from first principles.

Low Risk Doctrines

Thanksgiving

Japanese name: 感謝
Key terms: thanksgiving, give thanks, I thank my God
Review routing: Automated review

Standard term; minor risk of generic secular gratitude without specific reference to God.

Christian Fellowship and Shared Labor

Japanese name: クリスチャンの交わりと共に労すること
Key terms: striving together, fellowship, risked his life
Review routing: Automated review

Shared, gospel-content labor and cooperation among believers; positive bridge to Japan’s team-sports and group-cooperation culture, with no significant doctrinal collision risk at this Low tier of usage.
