Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference Analysis — Gospel of John (English → Japanese)
Method and Scope
This document maps every formal Old Testament quotation, every significant Old Testament allusion/typology, every messianic reference, and every meaningful parallel to the Romans curriculum, across all 21 chapters of John. Coverage is exhaustive at the chapter level; chapters contributing no new cross-reference material beyond items already logged are marked “reuse only” rather than omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
Two categories of translation sensitivity recur throughout and are called out wherever they occur:
- Shared-quotation sensitivity — an OT verse quoted verbatim in both John and Romans. These require identical Japanese Scripture-text rendering across both curricula, sourced from a single canonical OT text (Shinkaiyaku 2017), not independently retranslated per curriculum.
- Intra-book typological-chain sensitivity — a phrase or image (not itself an OT quotation) that recurs across multiple John chapters and must be rendered identically at each occurrence to preserve the chain’s traceability (e.g., “lifted up,” the absolute “I am,” the Passover Lamb motif).
Part A — Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix
Chapter 1 — Prologue, John the Baptist, First Disciples
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1-3 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | The Word (Logos) | Genesis 1:1 — allusion (“in the beginning”) | Critical. Render 初め (hajime) so as to visibly echo 創世記1:1’s 「初めに」; guard against 言霊-adjacent readings of ことば (see 08_core_glossary.md). |
| John 1:14 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ / Incarnation | The Word | Exodus 25:8; 40:34-35 — typology (tabernacle indwelling of God’s glory) | High. Render “dwelt” with a verb evoking tabernacling presence (宿る), not a generic “lived”; cross-reference baseline’s 受肉. |
| John 1:23 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | John the Baptist | Isaiah 40:3 — direct quotation | Medium. Match Shinkaiyaku OT wording for 荒野で叫ぶ者の声 exactly. |
| John 1:29, 36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | John the Baptist, Jesus | Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (silent lamb led to slaughter) — typology | Critical. First link in a typological chain completed at John 19:36; render 神の子羊 consistently at both ends of the chain. |
| John 1:45 | Messianic Promise | Philip, Nathanael | General reference to “Moses and the Prophets” (Deuteronomy 18:15 tradition) | Medium — biblical-illiteracy risk, not a specific-verse rendering issue. |
| John 1:51 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus, Jacob (typology) | Genesis 28:12 — typology (Jacob’s ladder) | Medium. Requires OT narrative background; Jesus as the reality Jacob’s vision anticipated. |
Chapter 2 — Cana; Temple Cleansing
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:17 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Psalm 69:9 — direct quotation (“zeal for your house has consumed me”) | CRITICAL SHARED QUOTATION — Romans 15:3 quotes the same psalm verse, applying it to Christ bearing others’ reproaches. Must render 詩篇69:9 identically in both curricula. See Part D, Rule 1. |
| John 2:19-21 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | Jesus | Typological self-reference to the Temple, reinterpreted as Christ’s body; cf. Zechariah 6:12-13 (temple-builder messianic imagery) — allusion | High. Preserve the double referent (literal Temple / Christ’s body); do not resolve into only one sense. |
Chapter 3 — Nicodemus (Core Passage) and John the Baptist’s Continued Witness
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3-8 | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Jesus, Nicodemus | Ezekiel 36:25-27 (cleansing water, new spirit); Ezekiel 37:1-14 (breath/Spirit gives life); Isaiah 44:3 (poured-out water/Spirit) — allusion | High. OT background must be taught explicitly; connects forward to John 7:38-39 and John 20:22. |
| John 3:14 | The New Birth / Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus, Moses (typology) | Numbers 21:8-9 — direct typology (bronze serpent) | Critical. First link in the “lifted up” (ὑψωθῆναι) chain completed at John 8:28 and 12:32-34; render 上げられる/高く上げられる identically at all three occurrences. |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World | God the Father | Not a direct OT quotation; thematic parallel to Deuteronomy 7:7-8 (God’s initiating covenant love) and to Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that… Christ died for us”) | High. The Gospel’s most publicly known verse; fix a single Japanese rendering for use across all curriculum documents (parallel to baseline’s Romans 1:16-17 consistency rule). See Part D, Rule 5. |
| John 3:19-21 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Jesus | Thematic continuation of the light/darkness dualism from John 1:4-5 — intra-book allusion, not OT quotation | Medium. See baseline caution on 闇/陰翳 aesthetic collision (08_core_glossary.md). |
| John 3:36 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | John the Baptist | Thematic parallel to Romans 1:18 (wrath of God revealed against unrighteousness) | Medium-High. See 07_semantic_analysis.md’s 神の怒り risk note. |
Chapter 4 — The Samaritan Woman
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:5-6 | God’s Love for the World | Jesus, Samaritan woman | Genesis 33:18-19; 48:22 — background (Jacob’s well/land at Shechem) | Medium. Biblical-illiteracy risk; supply covenant-historical background. |
| John 4:10-14 | Eternal Life through Faith | Jesus, Samaritan woman | Isaiah 55:1; Jeremiah 2:13; Jeremiah 17:13 — allusion (“living/fountain waters”) | High. See 08_core_glossary.md’s お神水 (Shinto sacred-well water) collision caution. |
| John 4:20-24 | Unity of the Father and the Son (implicit); worship | Jesus, Samaritan woman | Deuteronomy 12:5-14 (centralized worship); 2 Kings 17:24-41 (Samaritan syncretism) — background | Medium. Historical-background allusion. |
| John 4:42 | God’s Love for the World | Samaritans | Thematic parallel to Romans 3:29-30; 10:12 (no distinction, Jew and Gentile) via 世の救い主 | High. Reinforces baseline’s “universal_scope_of_gospel” doctrine; resist uchi-soto narrowing. |
Chapter 5 — Bethesda; Equality with the Father
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:1-18 | (background — Sabbath conflict) | Jesus | Exodus 20:8-11; Deuteronomy 5:12-15 — background legal allusion | Medium. Conflict is over Pharisaic application, not the commandment itself; reuse baseline 律法. |
| John 5:18 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Thematic parallel to Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all”) | Critical. See 07_semantic_analysis.md’s 神と等しい entry — an accurately perceived, not misunderstood, equality claim. |
| John 5:29 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Jesus | Daniel 12:2 — allusion (“some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt”) | High. Avoid 因果応報 framing; a personal forensic verdict, not automatic karmic outcome. |
| John 5:39, 45-47 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Jesus, Moses | Deuteronomy 18:15 (prophet like Moses); general “the Scriptures” | High. Teach as a network of Mosaic typologies (paschal lamb, bronze serpent, manna), not an isolated proof-text. |
Chapter 6 — Feeding of the Five Thousand; Bread of Life
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 6:31-33 | Eternal Life through Faith / The Seven “I Am” Statements | Jesus, Moses (typology), crowd | Exodus 16:4, 15; Psalm 78:24 — direct quotation cited by the crowd (“he gave them bread from heaven”) | Critical. Anchors “I Am the Bread of Life”; retain the manna cross-reference in teaching. |
| John 6:45 | Eternal Life through Faith | Jesus | Isaiah 54:13 — direct quotation (“they will all be taught by God”) | Medium. Verify wording matches Shinkaiyaku OT text. |
| John 6:53-58 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Anticipates Passover/sacrificial-meal imagery (Exodus 12) — allusion | High. See 08_core_glossary.md caution on cannibalism-taboo misreading. |
Chapter 7 — Feast of Tabernacles
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:38 | Holy Spirit as Counselor (anticipatory) | Jesus | Isaiah 58:11; Zechariah 14:8; Ezekiel 47:1-9 — composite allusion (eschatological rivers) | High. John interprets this Spirit-Christologically (7:39); teach as prophetic fulfillment, not generic refreshment metaphor. |
| John 7:42 | Messianic Promise / Davidic Covenant | crowd (in dispute) | Micah 5:2 (Bethlehem birthplace); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 — direct allusion | High. Parallels baseline’s “davidic_covenant” and “seed_of_david” Romans doctrine entries; render ダビデの子孫 identically. |
Chapter 8 — Light of the World; “Before Abraham Was, I Am”
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 8:12 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Jesus | Isaiah 9:2; Isaiah 60:1-3 — allusion | Critical. Second “I Am”; continues the light/darkness thread from John 1 and 3. |
| John 8:17 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Jesus | Deuteronomy 19:15 — direct legal-principle citation | Medium. Forensic register; reuse 証しする/証言する. |
| John 8:28 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Reuse of the “lifted up” chain (see John 3:14) | Critical. Second link; identical rendering required. |
| John 8:56-58 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus, Abraham | Genesis 17:17; 22:1-18 (Abrahamic promise); Exodus 3:14 — direct typological echo of the divine self-name | CRITICAL. The strongest surviving cross-linguistic divine-name echo (Japanese OT also renders わたしはある). Cross-teach with Exodus 3:14 explicitly. Cross-curriculum note: Romans 4 treats Abraham as the pattern of justifying faith (Genesis 15:6); John treats Abraham as anticipating Christ’s day. Render アブラハム per established baseline transliteration in both contexts. |
Chapter 9 — The Man Born Blind
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:1-3 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Jesus, disciples | Background: Deuteronomy 24:16; Ezekiel 18:20 (individual, not inherited, guilt) | Medium. Disciples’ assumption reflects a retributive-causality framework Jesus corrects; parallels baseline’s caution against 因果応報. |
| John 9:5 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Jesus | Reuse of Isaiah 9:2/60:1-3 (see ch. 8) | Reuse only — no new sensitivity. |
Chapter 10 — The Good Shepherd; Oneness with the Father
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1-16 | The Seven “I Am” Statements / Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Ezekiel 34:1-31 (false shepherds rebuked; God himself will shepherd); Psalm 23; Zechariah 11:4-17; Jeremiah 23:1-4 — composite typology | Critical. Requires the Ezekiel 34 background for the Good Shepherd/Door “I Am” statements to register as direct fulfillment claims. |
| John 10:34 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus | Psalm 82:6 — direct quotation (“I said, you are gods”) | High. A fortiori argument; must not be read as suggesting ordinary humans are literally divine, nor dilute 10:30’s ontological equality claim. |
| John 10:30 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Jesus | Thematic culmination of Deuteronomy 6:4 (Shema, “the LORD is one”), reapplied Christologically | Critical. See 08_core_glossary.md’s 一つ/和 risk note; monotheistic confession reapplied to Father-Son unity requires careful framing. |
Chapter 11 — Raising of Lazarus
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:25 | The Seven “I Am” Statements / Resurrection | Jesus | Daniel 12:2 (resurrection to life); Ezekiel 37:1-14 — typology | Critical. Fifth “I Am”; reinforce with Ezekiel 37 dry-bones typology. |
| John 11:1-44 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (anticipatory) | Jesus, Lazarus, Martha, Mary | Typological anticipation of Christ’s own resurrection; no direct OT citation | High. Narrative-sign function; connects forward to John 20. |
Chapter 12 — Triumphal Entry; the Hour Has Come
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13 | Messianic Promise | crowds | Psalm 118:25-26 — direct quotation (“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) | High. Retain the Passover-Hallel liturgical force of ホサナ; do not flatten to a generic cheer. |
| John 12:15 | Messianic Promise / Kingdom Mission | Jesus | Zechariah 9:9 — direct quotation | High. Establishes the humble-king pattern later clarified at John 18:36 (“my kingdom is not of this world”). |
| John 12:38 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Isaiah (narrator’s citation) | Isaiah 53:1 — direct quotation (“Lord, who has believed our report?”) | CRITICAL SHARED QUOTATION — identical citation used in Romans 10:16. Must render イザヤ書53:1 identically across both curricula. See Part D, Rule 1. |
| John 12:40 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Isaiah (narrator’s citation) | Isaiah 6:10 — direct quotation | High. Judicial hardening theme; teach as a personal God’s response to persistent unbelief, not impersonal karma. |
| John 12:41 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Isaiah (typological identification) | Isaiah 6:1-3 — John identifies the object of Isaiah’s temple vision as Christ’s glory | Critical. A direct deity-of-Christ identification; render so the identification (not merely a resemblance) is clear. |
Chapter 13 — Foot Washing; Betrayal Foretold
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (betrayal foretold) | Jesus, Judas | Psalm 41:9 — direct quotation | Medium. Betrayal-by-an-intimate motif; requires narrative background. |
Chapter 14 — The Father’s House; The Paraclete Promised
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:2-3 | (background — Father’s house) | Jesus | Typological echo of tabernacle/temple dwelling (Exodus 25:8) | Medium. Connect to baseline’s adoption/inheritance doctrine (子とされること). |
| John 14:16-17, 26 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jesus | Joel 2:28-29 (Spirit poured out); Ezekiel 36:26-27 (new spirit within) — anticipatory allusion | Critical. Cross-curriculum note: Romans 10:13 quotes Joel 2:32 (same chapter) on calling on the Lord’s name for salvation. Both curricula draw on the same prophetic chapter for related but distinct doctrines; note the shared prophetic source in teaching material without conflating the two applications. |
Chapter 15 — The True Vine
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 15:1-8 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Jesus | Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7 (vineyard song); Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15:1-8; Ezekiel 19:10-14 — composite vine/vineyard typology | Critical. Seventh “I Am”; OT vine imagery typically depicts Israel as a failed/unfruitful vine — now fulfilled/embodied in Christ himself. Significant salvation-historical claim requiring explicit teaching. |
| John 15:25 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (rejection) | Jesus | Psalm 35:19; Psalm 69:4 — direct quotation (“they hated me without a cause”) | High. Third occurrence of Psalm 69 material in John (see John 2:17, 19:28); same psalm structuring the Passion narrative. |
Chapter 16 — The Spirit’s Ministry; Overcoming the World
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 16:13 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jesus | Reuse of Joel 2:28-29 (see ch. 14) | Reuse only. |
| John 16:21 | (background — eschatological sorrow-to-joy) | Jesus | Isaiah 26:17; Isaiah 66:7-8 — allusion (messianic birth-pang imagery) | Medium. Figurative background; low collision risk. |
Chapter 17 — The High Priestly Prayer
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:17-19 | (background — sanctification) | Jesus | Exodus 28-29; Leviticus 8 — typology (priestly consecration) | High. Christ’s high-priestly self-consecration grounds the disciples’ sanctification; reuse baseline 聖化/聖い. |
| John 17:11, 21-22 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Jesus | Extension of John 10:30’s Deuteronomy 6:4 (Shema)-rooted unity theme to believers’ derivative unity | Critical. Must distinguish believers’ relational/missional unity from the Father-Son ontological unity it is patterned after, not identical to. |
| John 17:3 | Eternal Life through Faith | Jesus | Definitional deepening of John 3:15-16’s “eternal life”; thematic parallel to Romans 6:23 (eternal life as God’s gift in Christ) | Critical. Best available textual corrective to the 不老不死 (immortality) collision risk; cite directly whenever teaching John 3:15-16. |
Chapter 18 — Betrayal, Arrest, Trial Before Pilate
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 18:1 | (background typology) | Jesus, David (typology) | 2 Samuel 15:23 — typological allusion (David crossing the Kidron in flight from Absalom) | Medium. Jesus as the true, greater David facing betrayal; biblical-illiteracy risk, not syncretism risk. |
| John 18:5-6 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus | Reuse of the absolute ἐγώ εἰμι / Exodus 3:14 chain (see John 8:58) | Critical. The soldiers’ physical recoil is best explained by direct cross-reference to 8:58/Exodus 3:14. |
| John 18:9 | Providence / Assurance | Jesus | Internal fulfillment of John 6:39/17:12 (no external OT citation) | Low. Self-referential fulfillment within the Gospel. |
| John 18:36 | (background — clarifies Kingdom of God) | Jesus, Pilate | Thematic parallel to baseline’s 神の国 caution (Romans doctrine registry, “kingdom_mission”) | High. Reinforces, does not conflict with, baseline’s existing State-Shinto-era anchoring requirement for 神の国. |
Chapter 19 — Crucifixion and Death
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 19:14 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Exodus 12:1-13 — typological/chronological framing (Passover) | Critical. John’s chronology places Jesus’ death at Passover lamb slaughter, reinforcing the Lamb of God typology as literal-historical. |
| John 19:24 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Roman soldiers | Psalm 22:18 — direct quotation (“they divide my garments among them…”) | Critical. Psalm 22 is the OT’s most extensive crucifixion-typology psalm; flag for future cross-curriculum consistency tracking. |
| John 19:28 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Psalm 69:21 — direct quotation (“I thirst”) | High. Fourth Psalm 69 occurrence structuring John’s Passion narrative (see John 2:17; 15:25). |
| John 19:36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20 — direct typological fulfillment | CRITICAL. Completes the Passover Lamb chain begun at John 1:29, 36 (神の子羊); the two passages must be cross-referenced explicitly and rendered as one continuous typological arc. |
| John 19:37 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death / Judgment and Belief | Jesus | Zechariah 12:10 — direct quotation (“they will look on him whom they have pierced”) | High. Requires Zechariah’s larger eschatological-mourning context as background. |
Chapter 20 — Resurrection Appearances
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 20:9 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | disciples (unnamed) | Likely referent: Psalm 16:10 and/or Isaiah 53:10-12 (general reference to “the Scripture”) | Medium. Not a specific citation in the text itself; supply Psalm 16:10 in background teaching. |
| John 20:22 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jesus | Genesis 2:7 (breath of life into Adam); Ezekiel 37:9-10 (breath into the dry bones) — typological allusion | Critical. Deliberate new-creation echo; connect explicitly back to the New Birth doctrine of John 3. |
| John 20:28 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Thomas | Direct, personal application of both baseline terms 主 and 神 to Jesus | Critical. Reuse — see 08_core_glossary.md’s わが主、わが神 entry; reinforces baseline’s Critical 神-qualification rule rather than contradicting it. |
| John 20:31 | Eternal Life through Faith | Narrator (John) | The Gospel’s own purpose statement | Critical. Render identically across all curriculum documents, parallel to baseline’s Romans 1:16-17 fixed-rendering rule. |
Chapter 21 — Epilogue: Restoration of Peter
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 21:15-17 | (background — restoration/shepherd commission) | Jesus, Peter | Ezekiel 34:23; Jeremiah 3:15 — typological fulfillment (a faithful shepherd after God’s own heart) | Medium. Commissions Peter into the shepherd-typology established at John 10; reuse 良い牧者/羊を養う vocabulary. |
Part B — Messianic Reference and Typology Threads (Book-Spanning)
| Typological Thread | Key Passages | OT Root | Doctrine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passover Lamb | John 1:29, 36 → 19:14, 19:36 | Exodus 12:1-13, 46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death |
| Bronze Serpent | John 3:14 | Numbers 21:8-9 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; New Birth |
| Manna / Bread from Heaven | John 6:31-33, 35, 48-51 | Exodus 16:4, 15; Psalm 78:24 | The Seven “I Am” Statements; Eternal Life |
| Shepherd of Israel | John 10:1-16; 21:15-17 | Ezekiel 34; Psalm 23; Zechariah 11; Jeremiah 23:1-4; Jeremiah 3:15 | The Seven “I Am” Statements |

| ”Lifted Up” (crucifixion = exaltation) | John 3:14; 8:28; 12:32-34 | (intra-book, rooted in Numbers 21:8-9 typology) | Christ’s Substitutionary Death |
| Suffering Servant | John 1:29; 12:38; 19 (Psalm 22 cluster) | Isaiah 53; Psalm 22 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death |
| Davidic Kingship | John 7:42; 12:13, 15; 19:19 (King of the Jews) | 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Micah 5:2; Zechariah 9:9; Psalm 118:25-26 | Messianic Promise; Kingdom Mission |
| Creation Breath / New Creation | John 20:22 | Genesis 2:7; Ezekiel 37:9-10 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor; New Birth |

Part C — Parallels to Romans (Cross-Curriculum Doctrine Correlation)
| John Doctrine | Romans Doctrine (baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json) | Shared or Parallel Passage(s) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Deity of Christ; Sonship of Christ | John 1:1-3, 8:58, 20:28 ↔ Romans 9:5 | Both curricula anchor the same 神/主/神の子 terms to full, uncreated deity; John supplies pre-existence emphasis Romans does not develop at length. |
| The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Sanctification; Effectual Calling | John 3:3-8 ↔ Romans 8:9-11, 12:2 | John’s new birth is the entry event; Romans’ sanctification is the ongoing process — teach as sequential, not identical. |
| Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | Salvation; Faith | John 3:15-16, 17:3, 20:31 ↔ Romans 1:16-17, 6:23, 10:9-10 | Romans 6:23 (“the gift of God is eternal life”) is the closest single-verse Romans parallel; render 永遠のいのち identically in both curricula. |
| God’s Love for the World | Grace | John 3:16 ↔ Romans 5:8 | Near-verbatim thematic overlap (“God shows his love… while we were sinners”); recommend citing both together in teaching. |
| Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Universal Human Accountability | John 3:18-19, 5:29, 12:40 ↔ Romans 1:18-3:20, 2:6-11 | Both resist 因果応報 (impersonal karmic retribution) framing; judgment is a personal God’s forensic response. |
| The Seven “I Am” Statements | (no direct Romans parallel doctrine; unique to John) | John 6, 8, 10 (x2), 11, 14, 15 | Romans does not use ἐγώ εἰμι Christological formula; flag as a John-specific doctrine category requiring a new escalation rule in Phase 2 (see 08_core_glossary.md Part C). |
| The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Sanctification (Spirit’s ongoing work) | John 14:16-17, 26; 16:13 ↔ Romans 8:9-16, 26-27 | Romans’ 聖霊 usage (baseline, Critical) extends directly into the Paraclete material; maintain identical 聖霊 term, resolve 御霊 consistency flag per 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | Grace; Salvation (Romans 3:24-25 atonement language) | John 1:29, 10:11, 19:14-37 ↔ Romans 3:24-25, 4:25, 5:8 | Romans’ ἱλαστήριον/propitiation language (3:25) and John’s ὑπέρ (“for/on behalf of”) substitution language describe the same event from complementary angles; teach together. |
| Unity of the Father and the Son | (no direct Romans equivalent; closest is monotheistic confession implicit throughout) | John 10:30, 17:11, 21-22 | Unique to John; must be distinguished from Japan’s social-harmony ideal 和, per 08_core_glossary.md. |
Part D — Rendering Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Cross-Curriculum Terms
- Psalm 69 cluster (verbatim shared quotation). Psalm 69:9 is quoted at John 2:17 and at Romans 15:3 (different clause of the same verse). Psalm 69:4 is quoted at John 15:25; Psalm 69:21 is echoed at John 19:28. All Psalm 69 citations across both curricula must draw the underlying Japanese OT text from a single canonical source (Shinkaiyaku 2017 詩篇69篇) rather than being independently retranslated per curriculum or per occurrence.
- Isaiah 53:1 (verbatim shared quotation). Quoted at John 12:38 and at Romans 10:16 with identical Greek wording (Lord, who has believed our report?). Render イザヤ書53:1 identically in both curricula’s Scripture-quotation apparatus.
- Shared prophetic chapter, distinct application (Joel 2). Romans 10:13 quotes Joel 2:32; John 14:16-17/26 and 16:13 draw on the Spirit-outpouring promise of Joel 2:28-29 in the same chapter. These are not the same verse and must not be merged into a single citation, but teaching materials for both curricula may note the shared prophetic source.
- Intra-book typological chains are not OT quotations but require the same identical-rendering discipline. Specifically: (a) “lifted up” (上げられる/高く上げられる) at John 3:14, 8:28, 12:32-34; (b) the absolute “I am” (わたしはある-echoing forms) at John 8:58 and 18:5-6, 8; (c) 神の子羊 (Lamb of God) at John 1:29, 36 and its fulfillment at 19:36. A deviation in any one occurrence breaks the reader’s ability to trace the chain and must be flagged for human theologian review per baseline’s escalation rules.
- John 3:16 and John 20:31 fixed-rendering rule. Per baseline’s existing rule fixing the rendering of Romans 1:16-17 and Romans 8:28 across all documents, this curriculum adds: the Japanese rendering of John 3:16 and of John 20:31 (the Gospel’s purpose statement) must be identical across every teaching document in which either verse appears.
- Citation format. All Scripture references in final Japanese-language curriculum output follow the format fixed in
2:7). The Gospel of John itself is cited as ヨハネの福音書. - Deity-identification citations (Exodus 3:14; Isaiah 6:1-3). Where John cites or echoes an OT theophany text to identify Christ with YHWH (John 8:58; 12:41; 18:5-6), the surrounding Japanese exposition must apply baseline’s Critical 神 qualification convention (唯一のまことの神) to the identification being made, exactly as baseline requires for direct statements about God’s uniqueness — because these passages are direct Deity-of-Christ claims, not indirect ones.
- New OT book-name mappings required for this curriculum (not present in the Romans baseline’s citation list): 出エジプト記 (Exodus), 民数記 (Numbers), サムエル記第二 (2 Samuel), レビ記 (Leviticus), エゼキエル書 (Ezekiel), ダニエル書 (Daniel), ミカ書 (Micah), ゼカリヤ書 (Zechariah), マラキ書 (Malachi — background only, ch. 2 typology). These must be added to the Language Package’s book-name registry alongside baseline’s existing list (創世記, 詩篇, イザヤ書, ハバクク書, ヨエル書).
This document extends 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md and must be read together with them before Phase 2 processing of any segment containing an OT quotation, allusion, or Romans-parallel doctrine.
