God
CRITICAL: Malay Christians have used Allah for God since the earliest Malay Bible translations (from 1629), and it remains the term used in the Alkitab today, particularly established among Christians in Sabah and Sarawak. Its use by non-Muslims has also been the subject of significant, ongoing legal and political contest in Malaysia (including a 2013 Court of Appeal ruling restricting non-Muslim use of the word in Peninsular Malaysia, and a 2021 High Court ruling in Kuching affirming a Christian’s right to use it), making this Language Package’s single most legally and politically sensitive term, not only a theological one.
