Core Glossary

Core Glossary: 1 Timothy (Ndebele)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning all six chapters of 1 Timothy. Terms already fixed in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json are marked (baseline reuse) and must be rendered exactly as recorded there. Terms new to this curriculum are marked (NEW) and proposed here with a risk tier consistent with the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework, for registration into an extended translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json / doctrine_risk_registry.json in a subsequent phase.

C. Chapters Reviewed with No Additional New Terms Beyond Those Listed

Every chapter of 1 Timothy (1-6) has been reviewed above and contributes at least one new term or doctrine-relevant reuse; there is no chapter in this short letter without load-bearing theological vocabulary. Repetition of qualification vocabulary between 3:2-7 (overseers) and 3:8-13 (deacons), and between 3:3/3:8 and 6:10 (love of money), is intentional in the source text and has been noted above rather than re-tabulated, to preserve the letter’s own internal cross-referencing for translators.

D. Cross-Reference to Existing Baseline Doctrine Registry

The following doctrines newly emphasized in 1 Timothy map onto already-registered Critical doctrines in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json and should be treated as direct reinforcements requiring the same mandatory theologian review routing, not as separate risk categories:

  • Christ as the One Mediator → baseline the_mediator_christ_alone (Critical)
  • Incarnation elements in 3:16 → baseline incarnation (Critical)
  • Lordship language in 6:15 → baseline lordship_of_christ (Critical)
  • Savior/salvation vocabulary throughout → baseline salvation (Critical)
  • Sovereignty of God in 1:17, 6:15-16 → baseline sovereignty_of_god (Critical)

New doctrines introduced by this curriculum with no direct baseline precedent (Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching, Qualifications for Church Leadership, Public Worship and Prayer [as a distinct worship-order doctrine beyond baseline’s general “prayer”], The Church as Pillar of Truth, Godliness and Contentment, Care for Widows and the Household of Faith, Guarding the Deposit of Faith) should be added as new entries to an extended doctrine_risk_registry.json in the next phase, using the risk tiers assigned per term above.

Critical Risk Terms

Lord

Approved rendering: iNkosi
Transliteration: iNkosi
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Reinforced at maximal strength by 1 KuThimothi 6:15’s ‘King of kings and Lord of lords.’ Household ‘masters’ (δεσπόται, 6:1-2) must never be rendered iNkosi, to preserve this title’s exclusive Christological weight.

Incarnation

Approved rendering: ukuba ngumuntu
Transliteration: ukuba ngumuntu
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί (cf. 1 Tim 3:16)
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Directly underlies 1 KuThimothi 3:16’s creedal hymn clause ‘God was manifested in the flesh’; must never suggest temporary spirit-possession.

Intercession

Approved rendering: ukuncengela
Transliteration: ukuncengela
Doctrine: Prayer
Original: ἔντευξις
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Part of the fourfold prayer list (1 KuThimothi 2:1); directly reinforces the Christ-alone-mediator doctrine stated explicitly two verses later at 2:5.

Jesus

Approved rendering: uJesu
Transliteration: uJesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. ‘Christ Jesus’ consistently rendered ‘uKristu Jesu’ throughout 1 Timothy.

God

Approved rendering: uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Central to every doctrine in this curriculum; the risk is not the word itself but its traditional theological framing as remote and reached through amadlozi rather than directly through Christ.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: uMoya oNgcwele
Transliteration: uMoya oNgcwele
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifting
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Contrasted directly with ‘deceitful spirits’ and ‘teachings of demons’ in 1 KuThimothi 4:1; must never be conflated with amadlozi or any created spiritual being.

Salvation

Approved rendering: usindiso
Transliteration: usindiso
Doctrine: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Underlies the new term ‘uMsindisi’ (Savior), used repeatedly of God and Christ in 1 Timothy (1:1, 2:3, 4:10); must remain exclusive Christ-alone reconciliation, never deliverance sought through healers or ancestors.

Sound Doctrine

Approved rendering: imfundiso ephilileyo
Transliteration: imfundiso ephilileyo
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία
Category: Doctrine

The letter’s organizing health/sickness metaphor (1 KuThimothi 1:10, 6:3), contrasted with ‘sick’ teachers (6:4); must be preserved consistently, not flattened to a bare word for ‘correct.‘

Deceitful Spirits

Approved rendering: imimoya ekhohlisayo
Transliteration: imimoya ekhohlisayo
Doctrine: The Reality and Danger of Deceptive Spirits
Original: πνεύματα πλάνα
Category: Spiritual Warfare

Touches the same territory as amadlozi in traditional cosmology (4:1). Must not legitimize amadlozi as a benign parallel category, nor be read as dismissing the reality of a hostile spirit realm. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.

Teachings Of Demons

Approved rendering: imfundiso yamadimoni
Transliteration: imfundiso yamadimoni
Doctrine: The Reality and Danger of Deceptive Spirits
Original: διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων
Category: Spiritual Warfare

‘Idimoni’ must be kept doctrinally and lexically distinct from amadlozi, which traditional religion generally regards as protective kin-spirits (4:1). Mandatory theologian review.

Mystery Of The Faith

Approved rendering: imfihlo yokholo
Transliteration: imfihlo yokholo
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons); Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως
Category: Doctrine

Pauline ‘mystery’ is truth God has revealed to all in Christ, the opposite of secret initiate-only knowledge (3:9). Must be sharply distinguished from esoteric or exclusive hidden knowledge claimed by izangoma/izinyanga. Mandatory theologian review.

Mediator

Approved rendering: umlamuli
Transliteration: umlamuli
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Original: μεσίτης
Category: Christology

Directly instantiates the baseline’s existing ‘Christ as Sole Mediator’ Critical doctrine. 1 KuThimothi 2:5 is the most direct canonical statement of that doctrine; Christ alone, not amadlozi, not any human intercessor, stands as umlamuli between uNkulunkulu and humanity. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.

Ransom

Approved rendering: inhlawulo
Transliteration: inhlawulo
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Original: ἀντίλυτρον
Category: Salvation

Direct cultural collision: the ordinary Ndebele word for a customary compensation/appeasement payment (2:6). Must be taught as a once-for-all, sufficient payment to God for sin, never a repeatable social-reparation payment or a payment made to an offended ancestor.

Savior

Approved rendering: uMsindisi
Transliteration: uMsindisi
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator; Salvation (1 Timothy Reinforcement)
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation

Directly related to the baseline’s Critical ‘salvation’/usindiso family (1:1, 2:3, 4:10). Must be the exclusive personal divine agent of usindiso, never one of several potential sources of deliverance alongside healers or ancestors.

Saved Through Childbearing

Approved rendering: ukusindiswa ngokuzala abantwana (interpretive; requires footnote)
Transliteration: ukusindiswa ngokuzala abantwana
Doctrine: Public Worship and Prayer; Salvation (1 Timothy Reinforcement)
Original: σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας
Category: Salvation

MANDATORY THEOLOGIAN REVIEW: ‘saved’ here (2:15) shares the root of the baseline Critical usindiso and must never suggest childbirth as a means or condition of eternal salvation. Footnote must clarify interpretive options and anchor usindiso everywhere else in its established Christ-alone sense.

Mystery Of Godliness

Approved rendering: imfihlo yokukhonza uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: imfihlo yokukhonza uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth; Godliness and Contentment
Original: τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον
Category: Doctrine

Introduces the creedal hymn of 3:16. Combines two Critical collision-risk terms; same warnings apply as for ‘mystery of the faith’ and ‘godliness’ below.

God Manifested In The Flesh

Approved rendering: uNkulunkulu wabonakala enyameni
Transliteration: uNkulunkulu wabonakala enyameni
Doctrine: Incarnation (1 Timothy Reinforcement)
Original: Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christology

The incarnation (3:16); must never suggest temporary spirit-possession, a recognized traditional phenomenon. This is God the Son permanently, historically becoming human.

Godliness

Approved rendering: ukukhonza uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: ukukhonza uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Ethics

SEVERE COLLISION WARNING: the verb ‘-khonza’ is the identical verb used for venerating amadlozi (‘ukukhonza amadlozi’). Recurs across five chapters (2:2, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:3, 6:5-6, 6:11). Every occurrence must keep the object explicit and exclusive to uNkulunkulu.

Godliness As A Means Of Gain

Approved rendering: ukukhonza uNkulunkulu njengendlela yenzuzo
Transliteration: ukukhonza uNkulunkulu njengendlela yenzuzo
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: πορισμὸν… τὴν εὐσέβειαν
Category: Ethics

The false teachers’ specific error (6:5) of treating godliness as profit; relevant to perceptions of paying for spiritual benefit as with izangoma/izinyanga.

King Of Kings And Lord Of Lords

Approved rendering: iNkosi yamakhosi leNkosi yeziNkosi
Transliteration: iNkosi yamakhosi leNkosi yeziNkosi
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ (1 Timothy Reinforcement)
Original: βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων
Category: God

6:15’s supreme doxological title; the strongest reinforcement in this letter of the baseline’s warning that iNkosi must exceed every historical royal title Ndebele culture has attached to that word, including the monarchy under Mzilikazi and Lobengula.

Only Sovereign

Approved rendering: uMbusi Oyedwa
Transliteration: uMbusi Oyedwa
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God (1 Timothy Reinforcement)
Original: μόνος δυνάστης
Category: God

God’s unique, unshared sovereign rule (6:15); reinforces the baseline’s Critical Sovereignty of God doctrine.

King Of The Ages

Approved rendering: iNkosi yaphakade
Transliteration: iNkosi yaphakade
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God (1 Timothy Reinforcement)
Original: βασιλεὺς τῶν αἰώνων
Category: God

Doxological climax of chapter 1 (1:17); this eternal kingship must exceed any historical royal title, including the Ndebele monarchy.

Show Godliness To Ones Own Household

Approved rendering: ukukhonza uNkulunkulu ngokunakekela indlu yakhe
Transliteration: ukukhonza uNkulunkulu ngokunakekela indlu yakhe
Doctrine: Care for Widows and the Household of Faith; Godliness and Contentment
Original: εὐσέβειαν ἀσκεῖν τῷ ἰδίῳ οἴκῳ
Category: Household

Family duty as an expression of reverence toward uNkulunkulu specifically (5:4); same -khonza collision warning applies.

Guard The Deposit

Approved rendering: gcina okuphathisiweyo
Transliteration: gcina okuphathisiweyo
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: φύλαξον τὴν παραθήκην
Category: Doctrine

This curriculum’s summary doctrine (6:20). A legal/commercial entrustment image resonating positively with Ndebele customary practices of entrusting valued property to a trustworthy custodian; risk lies in under-translating to a bare word for ‘teaching’ or over-literalizing as a physical object. Mandatory theologian review.

High Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: umusa
Transliteration: umusa
Doctrine: Grace
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Must not be softened into general kindness or treated as reward for ritual observance. Anchors Paul’s testimony of grace to ‘the foremost of sinners’ in 1 KuThimothi 1:14-16, the tonal keynote of the whole letter.

Faith

Approved rendering: ukholo
Transliteration: ukholo
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Recurs constantly across 1 Timothy chapters 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6; object must stay anchored to Christ/the gospel, including in compounds such as ‘depart from the faith’ and ‘deny the faith.‘

Approved rendering: ukungcweliswa
Transliteration: ukungcweliswa
Doctrine: Sanctification

Law

Approved rendering: umthetho
Transliteration: umthetho
Doctrine: Righteousness of God
Original: νόμος

Sin

Approved rendering: isono
Transliteration: isono
Doctrine: Humanity’s Sinfulness
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτωλός
Category: Sin

Inherited from Romans package. Related adjectival form ‘isoni’ (sinner) used in ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’ (1 KuThimothi 1:15).

Glory

Approved rendering: udumo
Transliteration: udumo
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Rejected alternatives: inkazimulo

Prophet

Approved rendering: umphrofethi
Transliteration: umphrofethi
Doctrine: Authority of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: isangoma

Father

Approved rendering: uBaba
Transliteration: uBaba
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Not thematically prominent in 1 Timothy but retained for consistency in Trinitarian references.

Transliteration: ukufundisa imfundiso eyahlukileyo
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Original: ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω
Category: Doctrine

The specific danger Timothy must guard against (1:3, 6:3); distinguish from legitimate doctrinal development or debate.

Myths

Approved rendering: izinganekwane
Transliteration: izinganekwane
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Original: μῦθοι
Category: Doctrine

Direct vocabulary collision with the genuinely valued Ndebele oral-tradition folktale genre; must be scoped explicitly to speculative religious teaching presented as doctrine (1:4, 4:7), never to traditional storytelling as a cultural art form.

Falsely Called Knowledge

Approved rendering: ulwazi olubizwa ngamanga
Transliteration: ulwazi olubizwa ngamanga
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις

Transliteration: ukunikelwa kuSathane
Doctrine: The Reality and Danger of Deceptive Spirits
Original: παραδίδωμι τῷ Σατανᾷ

Overseer

Approved rendering: umbonisi
Transliteration: umbonisi
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Original: ἐπίσκοπος / ἐπισκοπή
Category: Leadership

Transliteration: ukubusa
Doctrine: Public Worship and Prayer

Transliteration: insika lesisekelo seqiniso
Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth
