Core Glossary
Core Glossary: Galatians (English–Greek–Ndebele)
This glossary covers every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from every chapter of Galatians (1–6). Terms marked [BASELINE REUSE] carry over the exact Ndebele rendering recorded in the Romans translation_memory.json and must not be altered. Terms marked [NEW] are introduced by Galatians and require new translation-memory and doctrine-risk-registry entries in Phase 1 Step 2/3 deliverables. Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low).

Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 1:1 stresses Paul’s apostleship comes ‘through Jesus Christ and God the Father,’ reinforcing the direct-access theme; uNkulunkulu must never be framed as remote or reached only through amadlozi.
Jesus
Approved rendering: uJesu
Transliteration: uJesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Standard, well-established Nguni Bible transliteration used consistently throughout Galatians.
Messiah
Approved rendering: uMesiya
Transliteration: uMesiya
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. ‘uKristu’ is used interchangeably as the pervasive proper-name usage in Galatians; ‘uMesiya’ preserves messianic-title background where relevant.
Lord
Approved rendering: iNkosi
Transliteration: iNkosi
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Must continue to exceed the historical royal/chieftaincy connotation this word carries in Ndebele history.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Adoption and Sonship
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Core passage anchor: Galatians 2:20’s ‘faith of the Son of God’ grounds the crucified-with-Christ statement in Christ’s unique divine identity.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: uMoya oNgcwele
Transliteration: uMoya oNgcwele
Doctrine: Fruit of the Spirit
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 5’s flesh/Spirit contrast and 5:22-23’s fruit list both require this term to remain the divine Person himself, never conflated with amadlozi or a possessing spirit.
Grace
Approved rendering: umusa
Transliteration: umusa
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 5:4’s ‘fallen from grace’ and 2:21’s ‘nullify the grace of God’ both depend on umusa retaining its unearned character against works-of-the-law logic.
Faith
Approved rendering: ukholo
Transliteration: ukholo
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Repeatedly paired directly with uJesu Kristu (2:16, 2:20, 3:22) to resist drift toward generalized trust or ancestral petition.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ukulunga
Transliteration: ukulunga
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Central to the core passage (2:21) and Abraham’s citation (3:6); must not collapse into moral or ritual/customary correctness.
Justification
Approved rendering: ukulungisiswa
Transliteration: ukulungisiswa
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: δικαίωσις / δικαιόω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Repeated three times in Galatians 2:16 alone; must remain a legal verdict credited by faith, never earned through Torah-observance.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: ukubalelwa ukulunga
Transliteration: ukubalelwa ukulunga
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 3:6-9 makes Abraham the paradigm case for every believer, Jew or Gentile.
Accursed
Approved rendering: kaqalekiswe
Transliteration: kaqalekiswe
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Original: ἀνάθεμα
Category: Gospel
CRITICAL: Paul’s twice-repeated judicial pronouncement (1:8-9) against false-gospel preachers. Must be taught as God’s own divine-judicial curse on false teaching, sharply distinguished from isiqalekiso as practiced in traditional witchcraft/ancestral-curse belief, understood as requiring ritual removal by a traditional specialist. Requires mandatory translator note at first occurrence.
Works Of The Law
Approved rendering: imisebenzi yomthetho
Transliteration: imisebenzi yomthetho
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: ἔργα νόμου
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL, the heart of the core passage (2:16 x3, 3:2, 3:5, 3:10). Must be sharply distinguished from ‘imisebenzi elungileyo’ (good deeds generally) AND from ritual/customary obligations toward amadlozi performed to maintain good standing.
Faith In Christ
Approved rendering: ukholo kuJesu Kristu
Transliteration: ukholo kuJesu Kristu
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: πίστις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: the object of ukholo must always be explicit and recoverable as uJesu Kristu (2:16, 2:20, 3:22), resisting any drift toward generalized trust or ancestral petition.
Crucified With Christ
Approved rendering: ukubethelwa esiphambanweni kanye loKristu
Transliteration: ukubethelwa esiphambanweni kanye loKristu
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ
Original: συσταυρόω (Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι)
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: must echo the baseline’s ‘once-for-all, not cyclical’ framing for resurrection. Must NOT suggest a repeatable ritual death/rebirth rite, spirit-possession, or joining the amadlozi. Appears at 2:20 (core passage) and 6:14 (crucifying the flesh, 5:24).
Flesh Sinful Nature
Approved rendering: inyama
Transliteration: inyama
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Original: σάρξ (moral sense)
Category: Sin
CRITICAL: ‘inyama’ is the everyday word for meat/body. Chapter 5’s repeated flesh/Spirit contrast (5:16-24) must clearly signal the moral-spiritual sense through context, never confused with meat offered in ancestral sacrificial ritual.
Curse
Approved rendering: isiqalekiso
Transliteration: isiqalekiso
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: κατάρα
Category: Covenant
CRITICAL, directly parallel to ‘accursed’: ‘Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us’ (3:13) must be taught as God’s own righteous covenant judgment removed only through Christ’s substitutionary curse-bearing — never through ritual cleansing, appeasement, or traditional curse-removal practice.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: imimoya eyisisekelo yomhlaba
Transliteration: imimoya eyisisekelo yomhlaba
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Freedom
CRITICAL: sits extremely close to traditional Ndebele belief in spiritual forces governing natural cycles, seasons, and fortune, mediated through amadlozi and ritual specialists. Must be taught (4:3, 4:9) as a real but defeated form of spiritual bondage Christ has ended, never validated. Constructed phrase, not an inherited Bible-tradition term; confirm stability with Ndebele theologians before wide use.
Sorcery
Approved rendering: ubuthakathi
Transliteration: ubuthakathi
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Original: φαρμακεία
Category: Sin
CRITICAL — the single most culturally loaded term newly introduced by Galatians. A live, seriously feared social category in Ndebele communities tied to accusation, suspicion, and social rupture. Must be translated exactly (5:20), never softened, but requires urgent pastoral/theologian framing outside the translated text given real-world witchcraft-accusation volatility.
Fruit Of The Spirit
Approved rendering: izithelo zoMoya
Transliteration: izithelo zoMoya
Doctrine: Fruit of the Spirit
Original: καρπὸς τοῦ πνεύματος
Category: Sanctification
CRITICAL: must preserve the ‘fruit’ (organic, grown, singular, 5:22-23) vs. ‘gifts’ (bestowed, distributed, plural — izipho zoMoya) distinction; must not be reduced to an achievable checklist nor confused with fortune granted through ritual correctness.
New Creation
Approved rendering: isidalwa esitsha
Transliteration: isidalwa esitsha
Doctrine: Circumcision and the New Creation
Original: καινὴ κτίσις
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: must convey an ontologically new spiritual reality created by God in Christ (6:15), never a self-improved moral state, a ritual re-initiation, or a traditional cleansing/renewal rite performed to restore standing with the ancestors or community. Resolves the circumcision controversy opened in chapter 2.
Cross
Approved rendering: isiphambano
Transliteration: isiphambano
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ
Original: σταυρός
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: extends the crucified-with-Christ term coined at 2:20 into 6:12, 6:14; must carry the same once-for-all, non-repeatable atoning force and must not be softened into a generic symbol of suffering or hardship.
High Risk Terms
Father
Approved rendering: uBaba
Transliteration: uBaba
Doctrine: Adoption and Sonship
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Underlies Galatians 4:6’s ‘Abba, Father’ cry sent by the Spirit into believers’ hearts.
Gospel
Approved rendering: ivangeli
Transliteration: ivangeli
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Gospel
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged; risk elevated from Romans’ Medium to High for this curriculum per Step 6/7 analysis, since the entire letter is structured around defending this one true gospel against a rival counterfeit (1:6-9).
Law
Approved rendering: umthetho
Transliteration: umthetho
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Appears in nearly every chapter with a wider functional range than in Romans (condemning, custodial/guardian, positively reframed as ‘law of Christ’ in 6:2); never rendered with a term for customary law or ancestral taboo.
Sin
Approved rendering: isono
Transliteration: isono
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτωλός
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 1:4 and 2:15-17 establish universal need for justification common to Jew and Gentile; distinct from ritual impurity or ancestral offense.
Called
Approved rendering: obiziweyo
Transliteration: obiziweyo
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Original: κλητός (concept, cf. καλέσαντος)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 1:6 and 1:15 both use this sovereign-summons vocabulary; must not be read as an ancestral spirit’s call to mediumship.
Calling
Approved rendering: ubizo
Transliteration: ubizo
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Underlies Galatians 1:15’s account of Paul’s calling before birth.
Election
Approved rendering: ukukhethwa
Transliteration: ukukhethwa
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Original: ἐκλογή (concept)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Underlies Galatians 1:15’s ‘set apart before I was born’; must not be rendered with a term implying impersonal or ancestrally-determined fate.
Covenant
Approved rendering: isivumelwano
Transliteration: isivumelwano
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 3:15-17 and the Hagar/Sarah ‘two covenants’ argument (4:24) both depend on this term’s binding, relational sense.
Adoption
Approved rendering: ukutholwa njengomntwana
Transliteration: ukutholwa njengomntwana
Doctrine: Adoption and Sonship
Original: υἱοθεσία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 4:5 restates the identical Romans 8 doctrine; resonates positively with Ndebele kinship/inheritance values when kept anchored to full legal sonship.
Glory
Approved rendering: udumo
Transliteration: udumo
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: inkazimulo
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, translation unchanged. Galatians 1:5 and 1:24 both use this in doxological/testimony contexts.
Different Gospel
Approved rendering: ivangeli elinye
Transliteration: ivangeli elinye
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Original: ἕτερον εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Gospel
Must never read as a legitimate alternative form of the gospel; reinforce with ‘elingasilo iqiniso’ (which is not the truth) at first occurrence (1:6-7) to lock in the counterfeit sense.
Distort Gospel
Approved rendering: ukuphambanisa
Transliteration: ukuphambanisa
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Original: μεταστρέφω
Category: Gospel
Describes active corruption of the gospel’s content by false teachers (1:7), not a mere difference of emphasis.
Traditions Of The Fathers
Approved rendering: imikhuba yabokhokho
Transliteration: imikhuba yabokhokho
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Original: παράδοσις
Category: Apostleship
High risk: sits extremely close to Ndebele ancestral-custom and amadlozi-veneration vocabulary. Paul (1:14) describes his pre-conversion zeal for inherited Jewish religious custom specifically; must always be qualified with ‘eyamaJuda’ (of the Jews) and never read as a general verdict on all ancestral tradition.
Set Apart
Approved rendering: ukwehlukaniswa
Transliteration: ukwehlukaniswa
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Original: ἀφορίζω
Category: Apostleship
God’s sovereign selection of Paul for apostleship ‘before I was born’ (1:15); links to the calling/election doctrine cluster and must convey personal divine purpose, not impersonal fate.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: ukusoka
Transliteration: ukusoka
Doctrine: Circumcision and the New Creation
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
The physical Jewish covenant-sign rite. Circumcision itself carries no salvific weight in Ndebele custom, but the greater danger is the reverse: any ritual requirement being smuggled back in as necessary for full acceptance before God. Must stay tied to the physical Jewish rite (2:3, 2:7-9, 2:12, 5:2-3, 5:6, 5:11, 6:12-13), resolved by 6:15’s new creation.
Freedom
Approved rendering: inkululeko
Transliteration: inkululeko
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Original: ἐλευθερία
Category: Freedom
HIGH cultural-resonance risk: this is the same word used for Zimbabwe’s own political/liberation history from colonial rule. Must always be explicitly re-anchored to freedom from the law’s condemnation and sin’s power through Christ (2:4, 5:1, 5:13), never left to stand alone.
Truth Of The Gospel
Approved rendering: iqiniso levangeli
Transliteration: iqiniso levangeli
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Original: ἀλήθεια τοῦ εὐαγγελίου
Category: Gospel
Must convey that the gospel has one fixed, recoverable content that conduct (as with Peter at Antioch, 2:14) can contradict even without verbal denial.
Fallen From Grace
Approved rendering: ukuwa emuseni
Transliteration: ukuwa emuseni
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Original: ἐκπίπτω τῆς χάριτος
Category: Salvation
Built on umusa; requires careful doctrinal framing (5:4) so as not to suggest salvation is lost through a single moral lapse — the referent is specifically reverting to law-based self-justification. Gloss with ‘ngokuphenduka emthethweni’ where needed.
Faith Working Through Love
Approved rendering: ukholo olusebenza ngothando
Transliteration: ukholo olusebenza ngothando
Doctrine: Faith Working through Love
Original: πίστις δι’ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη
Category: Faith
Combines baseline ukholo with uthando (5:6). Must preserve that love is faith’s fruit/expression, not a separate meritorious work added to faith for justification.
Blessing
Approved rendering: isibusiso
Transliteration: isibusiso
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: εὐλογία
Category: Covenant
Must be read as God’s own covenant favor granted through faith in Christ (3:8-9, 3:14), not a blessing bestowed by ancestors through ritual observance.
Promise
Approved rendering: isithembiso
Transliteration: isithembiso
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: ἐπαγγελία
Category: Covenant
Distinguish God’s unilateral covenant promise (3:14-22, 4:23, 4:28) from a negotiated agreement or a vow made to appease ancestral spirits.
Seed Of Abraham
Approved rendering: inzalo (kaAbrahama)
Transliteration: inzalo (kaAbrahama)
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: σπέρμα
Category: Covenant
The Ndebele collective noun most naturally suggests plural descendants; Paul’s singular-referent argument (3:16, = Christ specifically) must be preserved via explanatory apparatus (e.g., ‘hatshi inzalo eziningi kodwa munye — nguKristu’), not left to default to ‘all Abraham’s descendants generally.‘
Guardian
Approved rendering: umqeqetshi
Transliteration: umqeqetshi
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Rejected alternatives: umlondolozi owalinda size sikhule (descriptive phrase, rejected as less standard)
Original: παιδαγωγός
Category: Covenant
‘The law was our guardian until Christ came’ (3:24-25). Contemporary usage of ‘umqeqetshi’ suggests an ongoing coach/trainer; must always be qualified with ‘kwaze kwafika uKristu’ (until Christ came) to force the temporary, subordinate, preparatory reading.
Heir
Approved rendering: indlalifa
Transliteration: indlalifa
Doctrine: Adoption and Sonship
Original: κληρονόμος
Category: Salvation
Connects to the adoption doctrine (3:29, 4:1, 4:7) — must convey full inheritance right within God’s family, resonant with (and correctable by) strong Ndebele kinship/inheritance customs.
Slave
Approved rendering: isigqili
Transliteration: isigqili
Doctrine: Adoption and Sonship
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Salvation
Contrasted with ‘son’ as the pre-adoption status now surpassed (4:1, 4:7); distinguish from voluntary household service. Handle with sensitivity given the term’s heavy historical weight from regional slave-raiding history; keep strictly textual/metaphorical.
Observing Special Days
Approved rendering: ukugcina insuku, izinyanga, izikhathi, leminyaka
Transliteration: ukugcina insuku, izinyanga, izikhathi, leminyaka
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Original: παρατηρέω ἡμέρας, μῆνας, καιρούς, ἐνιαυτούς
Category: Covenant
Paul’s rebuke (4:10) maps unusually closely onto ritual calendar observance tied to ancestral rites and seasonal ceremonies in Ndebele tradition; must be framed as critique of treating calendar-observance as necessary for standing before God, not a blanket rejection of all religious calendars.
Yoke Of Slavery
Approved rendering: ijogwe lobugqili
Transliteration: ijogwe lobugqili
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Original: ζυγῷ δουλείας
Category: Freedom
‘Do not submit again to a yoke of slavery’ (5:1); pairs with the freedom entry as its negative counterpart.

Transliteration: ukuhamba ngoMoya
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Original: περιπατέω πνεύματι

Transliteration: ukuthwalelana imithwalo
Doctrine: Bearing One Another’s Burdens
Original: βαστάζετε τὰ βάρη ἀλλήλων
Category: Ethics
‘And so fulfill the law of Christ’ (6:2). Must be taught as voluntary, Spirit-motivated mutual support, not conflated with obligatory clan/kinship burden-bearing duties or debts owed to extended family/ancestral lineage structures.

Approved rendering: isambulo
Transliteration: isambulo
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Original: ἀποκάλυψις
Category: Apostleship
Standard Nguni Bible term (cf. the book title ‘Isambulo’ for Revelation); must convey direct divine disclosure of the gospel to Paul (1:12, 1:16), not a diviner’s (isangoma) revelation. Qualify with ‘okuvela kuNkulunkulu’ (from God) where ambiguity is possible.

Approved rendering: abazalwane bamanga
Transliteration: abazalwane bamanga
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Original: ψευδάδελφος

Transgressor
Approved rendering: isephulamthetho
Transliteration: isephulamthetho
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Original: παραβάτης
Category: Covenant
Built on umthetho; Galatians 2:18 ironically applies this to reverting to law-keeping-as-boundary, not its abandonment. Must be read as one who breaks God’s law, not a customary-law offender.
Flesh Bodily
Approved rendering: inyama
Transliteration: inyama
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ
Original: σάρξ (neutral sense)
Category: Christology
Ordinary bodily/earthly existence, the neutral sense at 2:20; must be disambiguated by context from the moral ‘sinful nature’ sense dominant in chapter 5, since the same Ndebele word (inyama) covers both.
Love
Approved rendering: uthando
Transliteration: uthando
Doctrine: Faith Working through Love
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Ethics
Appears in 5:6, the fruit-of-the-Spirit list, and 6:2’s ‘law of Christ.’ Must be distinguished from love expressed as social/kinship obligation or as a means of securing ancestral or communal favor.
