Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Gospel of John (English → Ndebele)

Purpose and Method

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md across the entire Gospel of John (chapters 1-21), with the core passage (John 3:1-21) as the theological anchor. Per pipeline rules:

  • Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json are marked [TM-REUSE] and reproduced with their exact recorded Ndebele rendering; these are never altered here.
  • Terms new to the John curriculum are proposed with a doctrine risk tier assigned using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json, ready for formal registration into an extended translation memory in Phase 2.
  • Doctrine categories reference the nine curriculum doctrines: Deity/Pre-existence of Christ (DPC), New Birth and Regeneration (NBR), Eternal Life through Faith (ELF), God’s Love for the World (GLW), Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (JBU), The Seven “I Am” Statements (SIA), Holy Spirit as Counselor (HSC), Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (CSD), Unity of the Father and the Son (UFS).

JesusuJesuuJesuCriticalall1-21[TM-REUSE].
LordiNkosiiNkosiCriticalDPC, CSD11, 13, 20, 21[TM-REUSE]. Collision with earthly “inkosi” (king/chief) recurs sharply at John 19’s “King of the Jews” inscription (see Table B); teach Christ’s lordship as exceeding both.

Holy SpirituMoya oNgcweleuMoya oNgcweleCriticalHSC1, 3, 7, 14-16, 20[TM-REUSE]. Never conflate with amadlozi or a diviner’s possessing spirit; John 20:22’s “receive the Holy Spirit” is a key text.

Word (Logos)λόγοςlogosiLizwiCriticalDPC1”umyalezo” (message) — rejected, too weak/impersonalMust be a personal title for the eternal, divine Son, not a mere message. Established Nguni Bible tradition term.
LightφῶςphōsukukhanyaHighJBU, DPC1, 3, 8, 9, 12Governing Johannine symbol for Christ/revelation; must not be blurred with indigenous concepts of spiritual illumination via diviners.
Darknessσκότος / σκοτίαskotos / skotiaubumnyamaHighJBU1, 3, 12Moral/spiritual opposition to Christ, not a benign physical absence of light.
World (theological, dual-sense)κόσμοςkosmosumhlabaCriticalGLW, JBU1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 12, 14-18”ilizwe” (nation/country) — rejected, too narrow/politicalTwo senses must be distinguished by context: (1) humanity as object of God’s love (3:16), (2) the God-opposing system under its “ruler” (12:31).

Born again / born from aboveγεννηθῇ ἄνωθενgennēthē anōthenukuzalwa kutshaCriticalNBR3”ukuzalwa kusukela phezulu” (born from above, standalone) — rejected as primary rendering since it loses the “again” sense driving Nicodemus’s confusion (v.4), though the “from above” sense must still be taught explicitlyDeliberate Greek double meaning; Ndebele cannot carry both senses in one word. Translator note mandatory.
Water (regeneration context)ὕδωρhydōramanziMediumNBR3, 4Must not reduce new birth to correctly-performed ritual washing.
Spirit / wind / breathπνεῦμαpneumauMoya / umoyaCriticalNBR, HSC3, 4, 7, 14-16, 20Ndebele “umoya” conveniently covers both “wind” and “Spirit” as in Greek — an asset preserving John 3:8’s wordplay. Context must distinguish the divine Person from ordinary wind and from amadlozi.
FleshσάρξsarxinyamaHighNBR, DPC1, 3, 6Creaturely, merely-human order of origin/existence; in 1:14, deliberately physical (“the Word became flesh”).

Notes for Phase 2 Extension

  1. All [TM-REUSE] terms above must be enforced with the same non-negotiable priority as in the Romans package; no deviation is permitted for John.
  2. All new terms in Table B should be formally added to an extended translation_memory.json for John before Phase 2 segment translation begins, following the same JSON schema as the baseline.
  3. The seven “I am” statements (Table B) should be treated as a linked set requiring a single, consistent Ndebele construction and cross-referenced translator notes, given their combined doctrinal weight (SIA + DPC).
  4. The absolute “I am” (8:58; 18:5-6) must be kept formally distinct from the seven predicated “I am [X]” statements in both rendering and footnoting, since it makes a different (and even higher) claim.
  5. “amaJuda” (the Jews) requires per-occurrence contextual review across the whole Gospel to avoid a mistranslation that implies collective ethnic culpability where the text specifically targets hostile religious authorities.

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering: uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Original: θεός
Category: God

CRITICAL: the established Nguni term for the Supreme Being. The doctrinal risk is not the word itself but its traditional theological framing as remote and reached through ancestral mediators (amadlozi); John 1:1,1:18,14:9-11 and 20:28 all press toward direct, personal access to uNkulunkulu through the Son. Inherited from Romans package.

Jesus

Approved rendering: uJesu
Transliteration: uJesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Standard, well-established Nguni Bible transliteration, used consistently across all 21 chapters of John. Inherited from Romans package.

Lord

Approved rendering: iNkosi
Transliteration: iNkosi
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Must convey exclusive, supreme lordship. The collision with ‘iNkosi’ as historical royal/chieftaincy title recurs sharply at John 19:19-22’s ironic ‘King of the Jews’ inscription (see king_of_the_jews) and converges with ‘uNkulunkulu’ at Thomas’s confession (20:28, see lord_and_god_confession). Inherited from Romans package.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal divine sonship. Recurs at John 1:34, 3:16-18, 5:25, 10:36, 11:4,27, 20:31. Must be kept distinct from ‘iNdodana yoMuntu’ (Son of Man) and ‘abantwana bakaNkulunkulu’ (children of God, believers). Inherited from Romans package.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: uMoya oNgcwele
Transliteration: uMoya oNgcwele
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God

The third Person of the Trinity, personal and divine; must never be conflated with amadlozi or a diviner’s possessing spirit. Central to John 3, 4, 7, 14-16, 20; John 20:22’s Genesis-2:7-echoing ‘receive the Holy Spirit’ is a key text. Inherited from Romans package.

Salvation

Approved rendering: usindiso
Transliteration: usindiso
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

Root shared with new terms ‘uMsindisi’ (Savior, 4:42) and the verb ‘asindiswe’ (be saved, 3:17). Must not be reduced to physical protection or deliverance from misfortune sought through ancestral appeasement. Inherited from Romans package.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: ukuvuka kwabafileyo
Transliteration: ukuvuka kwabafileyo
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Bodily, historical, once-for-all rising. Central to John 2:19-22 (Temple/body typology), 5:28-29, 11:23-26, and 20. Must never be conflated with a deceased person joining the amadlozi. Inherited from Romans package.

Incarnation

Approved rendering: ukuba ngumuntu
Transliteration: ukuba ngumuntu
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο
Category: Christology

The eternal Son permanently and uniquely assuming human nature; John 1:14 (‘the Word became flesh’) is the primary biblical text underlying this doctrine. Must not suggest temporary spirit-possession. Inherited from Romans package.

Messiah

Approved rendering: uMesiya
Transliteration: uMesiya
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology

The Anointed One, fulfilled exclusively in Jesus. Recurs at John 1:20,41, 4:25-26,29, 7:26-42, 11:27, 20:31. ‘uKristu’ is used interchangeably. Inherited from Romans package.

Righteousness

Approved rendering: ukulunga
Transliteration: ukulunga
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation

Right standing before God. Occurs at John 16:8,10, where the Spirit convicts the world ‘concerning righteousness.’ Must not collapse into dutiful conduct or moral achievement. Inherited from Romans package.

Word Logos

Approved rendering: iLizwi
Transliteration: iLizwi
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: umyalezo
Original: λόγος
Category: Christology

The eternal, pre-existent, divine Son, personified and identified as God from the Gospel’s opening verse (1:1,14,18). Established Nguni Bible tradition rendering. Must be marked as a personal divine title, never a mere message or created intermediary spirit.

World Kosmos

Approved rendering: umhlaba
Transliteration: umhlaba
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Rejected alternatives: ilizwe
Original: κόσμος
Category: Salvation

Two senses must be distinguished by context: (1) humanity as object of God’s love (3:16), (2) the God-opposing system under ‘the ruler of this world’ (12:31, 14:30, 16:11). ‘Ilizwe’ rejected as too narrow/politically loaded.

Believe

Approved rendering: ukukholwa
Transliteration: ukukholwa
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: πιστεύω
Category: Faith

John’s dominant verb (~98 occurrences) for the decisive human response to Jesus, built on the same root as ‘ukholo’ (faith, noun); root consistency between Romans and John is essential.

Eternal Life

Approved rendering: ukuphila okuphakade
Transliteration: ukuphila okuphakade
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Rejected alternatives: impilo ende
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Eschatology

Life in its fullest, God-given, spiritual sense, without end (occurs 17 times). Must not be reduced to this-worldly prosperity/longevity nor to joining the amadlozi after death.

Eternal Life Defined

Approved rendering: ukwazi uNkulunkulu (component of ‘ukuphila okuphakade’)
Transliteration: ukwazi uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ

John’s own definition of eternal life (17:3): relational, personal knowledge of God and Christ, not mere unending duration. Must be textually anchored, not left to inference.

Born Again

Approved rendering: ukuzalwa kutsha
Transliteration: ukuzalwa kutsha
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ukuzalwa kusukela phezulu
Original: γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν
Category: New Birth

CRITICAL, foundational to John 3:1-8. Greek anōthen carries both ‘again’ and ‘from above’; no single Ndebele word carries both. ‘Ukuzalwa kutsha’ preserves ‘again’ (driving Nicodemus’s misunderstanding, v.4); the ‘from above’ sense must be taught explicitly in vv.5-8. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence; must never be conflated with becoming a spirit-medium taken by an idlozi.

Spirit Wind Breath

Approved rendering: uMoya / umoya
Transliteration: uMoya
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God

CRITICAL. Ndebele ‘umoya’ conveniently covers both ‘wind/breath’ and ‘Spirit,’ preserving John 3:8’s wordplay as an asset. Context must always distinguish the divine Spirit from ordinary wind and from an ancestral spirit (idlozi); never leave ‘umoya’ unqualified in this discourse.

Truth

Approved rendering: iqiniso
Transliteration: iqiniso
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Revelation

Major recurring Johannine theme (chs. 1, 3, 4, 8, 14, 16, 17, 18), climaxing at ‘I am the truth’ (14:6). Must be rendered consistently across the whole Gospel; underlies ‘uMoya weqiniso’ (Spirit of truth).

Only Begotten

Approved rendering: ozelwe yedwa / iNdodana yakhe ezelwe yodwa
Transliteration: ozelwe yedwa
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: eyodwa yakhe
Original: μονογενής
Category: Christology

Uniquely, incomparably one of a kind (1:14,18; 3:16,18). Must not imply a favorite among several divine sons, nor be confused with ‘ukutholwa njengomntwana’ (believers’ adoption), a categorically different, non-eternal status.

Lamb Of God

Approved rendering: iWundlu likaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: iWundlu likaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Atonement

John the Baptist’s declaration (1:29,36), confirmed typologically at 19:36 (no bone broken). Requires explicit Passover/Isaiah 53 teaching background; must not be confused with animal sacrifice offered to appease ancestral spirits.

Son Of Man

Approved rendering: iNdodana yoMuntu
Transliteration: iNdodana yoMuntu
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology

Combines Daniel 7:13-14’s heavenly, glorious, judging figure with full identification with humanity (occurs 13 times: 1:51, 3:13-14, 5:27, 6:27,53,62, 8:28, 9:35, 12:23,34, 13:31). Must not be flattened into a generic phrase for ‘a human being,’ nor confused with ‘iNdodana kaNkulunkulu’ (Son of God).

Savior

Approved rendering: uMsindisi (womhlaba)
Transliteration: uMsindisi
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation

The Samaritans’ climactic confession title for Jesus (4:42), built on ‘usindiso’ root for noun-title consistency. Universalizes salvation’s scope beyond Israel/Samaria.

Pre Existent Glory

Approved rendering: udumo… ngingakabi khona umhlaba
Transliteration: udumo ngingakabi khona umhlaba
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)

John 17:5,24’s explicit, unambiguous statement of Christ’s personal pre-existence (‘the glory I had with you before the world existed’), reinforcing John 1:1. Must be preserved as a clausal statement, not compressed into a single word.

I Am Absolute

Approved rendering: Mina ngikhona / Yimi
Transliteration: Mina ngikhona
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι
Category: Christology

The absolute, unpredicated ‘I am,’ echoing Exodus 3:14 (8:58, ‘before Abraham was, I am’; re-enacted at 18:5-6). Formally distinct from the seven predicated ‘I am [X]’ statements. Mandatory translator note required at both occurrences, linking them to each other and to the divine name.

I Am Predicate

Approved rendering: Mina ngiyi-…
Transliteration: Mina ngiyi-
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι + predicate
Category: Christology

Fixed construction used consistently across all seven statements (6:35 bread; 8:12 light; 10:7,9 door; 10:11,14 good shepherd; 11:25 resurrection and life; 14:6 way/truth/life; 15:1,5 true vine). Each requires its own translator note flagging the divine-name echo; the exclusivity claim in each must never be softened into ‘a’ source among several.

It Is Finished

Approved rendering: Sekuphelile
Transliteration: Sekuphelile
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: Kwaphela
Original: τετέλεσται
Category: Atonement

Christ’s final word from the cross (19:30): a completed, sufficient, once-for-all accomplishment (debt paid in full). Must never be softened into resignation or defeat.

Equal With God

Approved rendering: ukulingana loNkulunkulu
Transliteration: ukulingana loNkulunkulu
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: ἴσος τῷ θεῷ
Category: Christology

Making oneself equal in nature/status to God the Father (5:18). Must be preserved as a true statement about Christ (John narrates the leaders’ charge as an accurate understanding of Jesus’s claim), not merely a hostile accusation.

Unity Father Son

Approved rendering: sibunye / -munye
Transliteration: sibunye
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν
Category: Christology

Direct assertion of essential unity between Son and Father (10:30), extended into Jesus’s prayer for believers’ unity (17:11,21-23). Must affirm real unity of essence/nature without collapsing the distinct persons (avoiding modalism); believers’ unity is modeled on, not identical in kind to, this.

Paraclete

Approved rendering: uMduduzi
Transliteration: uMduduzi
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Rejected alternatives: umsizi
Original: παράκλητος
Category: God

CRITICAL. Established Nguni/Zulu Bible tradition rendering (from ‘-duduza,’ to comfort). ‘Another Paraclete’ (14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7) implies continuity with Jesus’s own ministry. Must carry the fuller advocate/counselor/comforter range, never conflated with an ancestral spirit or a diviner’s possessing spirit.

Spirit Of Truth

Approved rendering: uMoya weqiniso
Transliteration: uMoya weqiniso
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: God

Built on ‘uMoya oNgcwele’ + ‘iqiniso’ (14:17, 15:26, 16:13). Reinforces that the Spirit’s ministry is never independent of, or in tension with, the truth revealed in Christ.

Lord And God Confession

Approved rendering: iNkosi yami loNkulunkulu wami
Transliteration: iNkosi yami loNkulunkulu wami
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: ὁ κύριός μου καὶ ὁ θεός μου
Category: Christology

Thomas’s confession upon seeing the risen Christ (20:28), the Gospel’s climactic confession of Christ’s full deity, built entirely on ‘iNkosi’ and ‘uNkulunkulu’ applied directly to the risen Jesus. Flag for mandatory theologian review.

Gospel Purpose Statement

Approved rendering: ukuze likholwe ukuthi uJesu unguKristu, iNdodana kaNkulunkulu… libe lokuphila
Transliteration: ukuze likholwe ukuthi uJesu unguKristu
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ἵνα πιστεύ[σ]ητε ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ… ζωὴν ἔχητε
Category: Salvation

The Gospel’s own explicitly stated purpose (20:31), joining believing, Messiahship, Sonship, and life in a single verse. Recommended anchor cross-reference verse for reviewing overall glossary consistency.

One Man Die For The People

Approved rendering: indoda eyodwa ifele abantu
Transliteration: indoda eyodwa ifele abantu
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection

Caiaphas’s unwitting prophecy of Christ’s substitutionary, vicarious death (11:49-52), remarkable for being placed in the mouth of Jesus’s chief opponent. The preposition ‘for/on behalf of’ must carry unmistakable vicarious/substitutionary force, not a weak ‘because of.‘

High Risk Terms

Father

Approved rendering: uBaba
Transliteration: uBaba
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

God as personal Father, anchored to the specific Father-Son Trinitarian relationship (5:17-23, 10:30,38, 14:9-11,28, 17), not a generic ancestral-elder figure, despite the strong positive resonance Ndebele kinship vocabulary carries. Inherited from Romans package.

Grace

Approved rendering: umusa
Transliteration: umusa
Doctrine: Grace
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Unmerited favor; appears in the hendiadys ‘grace and truth’ (John 1:14,1:17), presenting Jesus as the personal fulfillment of God’s covenant character. Must not be softened into reward for ritual correctness. Inherited from Romans package.

Transliteration: isono
Doctrine: Sin and Bondage to Sin

Category: Sin

Moral transgression before a personal God. Appears at John 1:29 (‘who takes away the sin of the world’), 8:21-24,34, 9:41, 16:8-9. Distinguish from ritual impurity or ancestral offense requiring appeasement. Inherited from Romans package.

Law

Approved rendering: umthetho
Transliteration: umthetho
Doctrine: The Law
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant

The Mosaic Law/Torah (John 1:17; 7:19-23). Kept distinct from the new term ‘umlayo’ (single commandment, e.g. the ‘new commandment’ of 13:34). Inherited from Romans package.

Holy

Approved rendering: -ngcwele
Transliteration: ngcwele
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification

Root of Peter’s confession ‘the Holy One of God’ (6:69) and of the new verb ‘ukungcwelisa’ (sanctify/consecrate) applied uniquely to the Son’s own mission-consecration (10:36, 17:19). Inherited from Romans package.

Election

Approved rendering: ukukhethwa
Transliteration: ukukhethwa
Doctrine: God’s Calling and Election (extended into John’s discipleship texts)
Original: ἐκλογή
Category: Salvation

Root extended into the new term ‘nginikhethile’ (‘I chose you,’ 15:16,19) and reinforced by ‘ukudonsa’ (draw, 6:44). Must not imply impersonal fate assigned by ancestral forces. Inherited from Romans package.

Calling

Approved rendering: ubizo
Transliteration: ubizo
Doctrine: God’s Calling and Election (extended into John’s discipleship texts)
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation

In John this concept surfaces mainly through ‘ukudonsa’ (the Father ‘draws,’ 6:44); the same distinction from an ancestral spirit’s call to mediumship applies. Inherited from Romans package.

Glory

Approved rendering: udumo
Transliteration: udumo
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: inkazimulo
Original: δόξα
Category: God

Central to John’s sign narratives (2:11), the cross (‘hour of glorification,’ 7:39, 12:23, 13:31), and the High Priestly Prayer’s pre-existence claim (17:5,24). Basis for new verb ‘ukudunyiswa’ (glorify). Inherited from Romans package.

Transliteration: ukukhanya

Original: φῶς
Category: Revelation

Governing Johannine symbol for Christ/revelation (1:4-9, 3:19-21, 8:12, 9:5, 12:35-36,46). Must be kept clearly christological/moral, not blurred with indigenous concepts of spiritual illumination associated with izangoma/izinyanga.

Darkness

Approved rendering: ubumnyama
Transliteration: ubumnyama
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: σκότος / σκοτία
Category: Revelation

The realm/condition of moral and spiritual blindness (1:5, 3:19, 12:35,46); must retain the moral-spiritual sense, not a benign absence of physical light.

Love Agape

Approved rendering: uthando / -thanda
Transliteration: uthando
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: ἀγαπάω / ἀγάπη
Category: God

Committed, self-giving, deliberate divine love (3:16, 13:1,34-35, 15:9-13, 17:23-26). Ndebele ‘-thanda’ does not lexically distinguish agapaō from phileō (surfaces sharply at 21:15-17); this must be carried in teaching notes, not the bare text.

Testimony

Approved rendering: ukufakaza / ubufakazi
Transliteration: ukufakaza
Doctrine: Testimony and the Authority of Scripture
Original: μαρτυρέω / μαρτυρία
Category: Revelation

Reliable eyewitness testimony, John’s central epistemological motif (chs. 1, 3, 5, 8, 15, 18, 19:35, 21:24); must be kept in a courtroom-reliability register, since the Gospel’s stated purpose (20:31) rests on this testimony.

Flesh

Approved rendering: inyama
Transliteration: inyama

Approved rendering: ukwahlulela
Transliteration: ukwahlulela
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief

Category: Judgment

Distinguish God’s saving purpose in sending the Son (not to condemn, 3:17) from the judgment unbelief nonetheless brings on itself (3:18); recurs at 5:22,27,30, 8:15-16,26,50, 9:39.

Judgment Noun

Approved rendering: isahlulelo
Transliteration: isahlulelo

Original: κρίσις
Category: Judgment

Names the judging event/verdict itself (3:19, 5:22,24,27,29, 9:39, 12:31, 16:8,11), a nuance distinct from the verb ‘ukwahlulela.‘

Condemn

Approved rendering: ukulahlwa / ukugwetshwa
Transliteration: ukulahlwa
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κρίνεται / κέκριται
Category: Judgment

Must convey a present, already-settled state (‘condemned already,’ 3:18), not merely a future threat. Standardize ‘ukulahlwa’ for the relational-exposure sense, ‘ukugwetshwa’ for explicitly forensic/final contexts (5:24,29).

Glorify

Approved rendering: ukudunyiswa
Transliteration: ukudunyiswa
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: δοξάζω
Category: Christology

Verb built on ‘udumo’ (glory, noun); in John, the cross itself is Christ’s ‘hour’ of glorification (7:39, 8:54, 11:4, 12:23,28, 13:31-32, 17:1,5,10).

Convict

Approved rendering: ukusola / ukuveza obala
Transliteration: ukusola

Original: ἐλέγχω
Category: Judgment

Same verb root links 3:20 (self-exposure by avoiding the light) and 16:8-11 (the Spirit’s convicting work concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment); the cross-reference must be preserved.

Overcome

Approved rendering: ukunqoba
Transliteration: ukunqoba
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection

Category: Atonement

‘I have overcome the world’ (16:33) anticipates the cross and resurrection as a decisive, already-certain victory over ‘the ruler of this world’ (12:31).

Abide

Approved rendering: ukuhlala (kuye)
Transliteration: ukuhlala
Doctrine: Discipleship and Fruitful Union with Christ
Original: μένω

Transliteration: ukudla inyama
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection

Transliteration: ukudonsa
Doctrine: God’s Calling and Election (extended into John’s discipleship texts)
Original: ἕλκω

Transliteration: ukukhulula
Doctrine: Sin and Bondage to Sin
Original: ἐλευθερόω / ἐλεύθερος
Category: Sin

Slave Of Sin

Approved rendering: isigqili sesono
Transliteration: isigqili sesono
Doctrine: Sin and Bondage to Sin
Original: δοῦλος τῆς ἁμαρτίας

Works Of God

Approved rendering: imisebenzi kaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: imisebenzi kaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sin and Bondage to Sin

Approved rendering: ukungcwelisa
Transliteration: ukungcwelisa
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ἁγιάζω
Category: Sanctification

Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Original: τέκνα θεοῦ

Approved rendering: amanzi aphilayo
Transliteration: amanzi aphilayo
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor

Doctrine: Worship in Spirit and Truth
Original: προσκυνέω

Approved rendering: ihola (lami)
Transliteration: ihola
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ὥρα
Category: Christology

Jesus’s theologically loaded term for his appointed time of death-glorification (2:4, 7:30, 8:20, 12:23, 13:1, 17:1); a technical marker, not a mere clock-hour.

Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: ὁ πατὴρ μείζων μού ἐστιν
Category: Christology

A statement of the Son’s voluntary, functional submission to the Father in his incarnate mission (14:28), not a denial of shared divine essence. Requires theologian-level teaching notes cross-referenced to 10:30 and 1:1 to avoid a subordinationist misreading.

Transliteration: nginikhethile
Doctrine: God’s Calling and Election (extended into John’s discipleship texts)
Original: ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς

Transliteration: iNkosi yamaJuda
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Category: Christology

Pilate’s inscription over the cross (19:19-22), intended mockingly but narratively true. Deliberately shares the root ‘-nkosi’ with ‘iNkosi’ (Lord); this ironic, mocked kingship must be taught as pointing to Christ’s true, surpassing lordship, not a failed rival to the historical Ndebele monarchy.

Kingdom Not Of World

Approved rendering: umbuso wami kawuveli kulumhlaba
Transliteration: umbuso wami kawuveli kulumhlaba
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God

Jesus’s statement to Pilate (18:36) distinguishing his kingdom’s source and nature from any earthly political kingdom; gives direct textual warrant for defusing ‘umbuso’s’ territorial/political weight from the historical Ndebele kingdom.

Transliteration: amaJuda
Doctrine: The Referent of ‘the Jews’ in John’s Narrative

Approved rendering: ithempeli
Transliteration: ithempeli
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection

Jesus applies ‘naos’ to his own body (‘destroy this temple… in three days I will raise it up,’ 2:19-21), a startling christological claim predicting the resurrection. Must carry the double reference (physical Temple / Christ’s body) via translator note.

Inherited from Romans package.

Apostle

Approved rendering: umphostoli
Transliteration: umphostoli
Doctrine: Mission and the Sending of the Son and the Church
