Core Glossary
Core Glossary: 2 Thessalonians (English → Ndebele)
This glossary extends the baseline Romans translation_memory.json for the 2 Thessalonians curriculum. New terms specific to 2 Thessalonians are marked [NEW] and proposed for addition to translation memory in Phase 2. Risk tiers follow the same Critical/High/Medium/Low convention as doctrine_risk_registry.json.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coming (of Christ) | παρουσία | parousia | ukuza (kweNkosi) | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:1, 8, 9 | Must denote a single, bodily, visible, public event; never a private spiritual visitation like ancestral appearance. Also used ironically of the lawless one’s counterfeit “coming” (2:9) — lexical parallel must be preserved. |
| 2 | Day of the Lord | ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου | hē hēmera tou kyriou | usuku lweNkosi | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:2 | A fixed, definite, future historical day, not a recurring observance or vague future age. |

| 6 | Son of destruction | ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας | ho huios tēs apōleias | indodana yokubhujiswa | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3 | Semitic idiom (“destined for destruction”); must not be read as implying literal divine/spirit parentage; keep sharply distinct from “iNdodana kaNkulunkulu.” |

| 9 | The restrainer (impersonal) | τὸ κατέχον | to katechon | okubambayo | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:6 | Ndebele’s noun-class system mirrors Greek’s neuter/masculine restrainer pairing; identity must remain deliberately unresolved in translation. |
| 10 | The restrainer (personal) | ὁ κατέχων | ho katechōn | obambayo | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:7 | Paired with #9; must not be identified as an ancestral protective spirit (idlozi). |

| 13 | Activity / working (of Satan) | ἐνέργεια | energeia | ukusebenza (kukaSathane) | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:9, 11 | Must be distinguished from “amandla kaNkulunkulu” (God’s saving power, baseline term); a counterfeit, derivative, defeated satanic operation. |
| 14 | Signs and wonders (false) | σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ψεύδους | sēmeia kai terata pseudous | izibonakaliso lezimangaliso zamanga | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:9 | Supernatural display is not proof of divine origin or truth; relevant caution regarding claimed izangoma/izinyanga signs. |

| 20 | Eternal destruction | ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος | olethros aiōnios | ukubhujiswa okungapheliyo | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:9 | Conscious, unending exclusion from God’s presence; must not suggest becoming an ancestral or wandering spirit, nor simple annihilation without moral significance. |
| 21 | Vengeance / retribution | ἐκδίκησις | ekdikēsis | impindiselo | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:8 | God’s own righteous judicial retribution, not human revenge or an impersonal avenging-spirit mechanism (cf. ingozi belief). |

| 28 | Traditions | παραδόσεις / παράδοσις | paradoseis / paradosis | izimfundiso ezidluliselwayo | Critical | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:15; 3:6 | HIGHEST PRIORITY NEW TERM. Must never use “amasiko” (ancestral/cultural custom); this is fixed apostolic gospel teaching handed down, not inherited ancestral practice. See full risk notes in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| 29 | Stand firm | στήκετε | stēkete | manini liqinile | Medium | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:15 | Active, resolute posture, not passive staying-put. |
| 30 | Disorderly / idleness | ἀτάκτως | ataktōs | ngokungahlelekanga | Medium | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:6, 7, 11 | Refusal to live by the transmitted apostolic pattern; broader than simple laziness. |

| 35 | Temple of God | ναός | naos | ithempeli (likaNkulunkulu) | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:4 | Established loanword preferred; must not be rendered with a term for a traditional shrine/spirit-house (indumba) used in ancestral consultation. |

Critical Risk Terms
Salvation
Approved rendering: usindiso
Transliteration: usindiso
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Must not be reduced to rescue from misfortune sought through ancestral appeasement; in 2:13 it is God’s chosen outcome for believers, set against the judgment of 2:1-12.
God
Approved rendering: uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Must never read as remote or accessible only through amadlozi; this letter frames God as personally directing history toward a specific righteous judgment and rescue in Christ.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: uMoya oNgcwele
Transliteration: uMoya oNgcwele
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifting
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. In 2:13 the Spirit’s sanctifying work realizes God’s own choice; must not be conflated with a possessing spirit or amadlozi.
Jesus
Approved rendering: uJesu
Transliteration: uJesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Central to the letter’s contrast between Christ’s true, visible parousia and the lawless one’s satanic counterfeit parousia (2:1, 8-9).
Lord
Approved rendering: iNkosi
Transliteration: iNkosi
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Must exceed the historical royal/chieftaincy weight iNkosi also carries; used of Christ’s own destruction of the lawless one ‘by the breath of his mouth’ (2:8). Never apply this title, or any royal titling, to the man of lawlessness.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ukulunga
Transliteration: ukulunga
Doctrine: Righteousness of God
Inherited from Romans package. Root of the compound ‘righteous judgment’ (1:5) and the direct antonym-pair for ‘unrighteousness’ (adikia, 2:10,12); consistency between the two is essential for this letter’s forensic logic.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Inherited from Romans package. Retained here as the essential contrast anchor for ‘son of destruction’ (indodana yokubhujiswa, 2:3), which structurally parallels but theologically opposes this term; the two must be kept sharply distinct in teaching.
Coming
Approved rendering: ukuza
Transliteration: ukuza
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: παρουσία
Category: Eschatology
Renders parousia. Must denote a single, bodily, visible, public event, never a private spiritual visitation (amadlozi appearance in dreams, mediumship, possession). Used of Christ (2:1, 8) and, in deliberate Pauline parody, of the lawless one’s counterfeit coming (2:9) — the same word must be reused for both to preserve the parody, with explicit subject-marking at each occurrence.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: usuku lweNkosi
Transliteration: usuku lweNkosi
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου
Category: Eschatology
A fixed, definite, future historical day, never a recurring ritual observance or vague future age. The whole argument of 2:1-12 turns on refuting the false claim that this day had already arrived (2:2). Never transliterated from Greek; always this possessive compound, per established Nguni Bible convention.
Man Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: umuntu ongelamthetho
Transliteration: umuntu ongelamthetho
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: iNkosi engelamthetho
Original: ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
Renders ho anthrōpos tēs anomias (2:3, 8). Must not be conflated with merely an unusually wicked king or chief — a category with strong resonance given iNkosi’s royal weight in Ndebele memory (Mzilikazi, Lobengula) — nor with a bewitching person (umthakathi) operating through customary sorcery. Never title him ‘iNkosi’ in any form; keep him grammatically a mere ‘umuntu’ (person), a specific singular end-times figure directly empowered by Satan.
Son Of Destruction
Approved rendering: indodana yokubhujiswa
Transliteration: indodana yokubhujiswa
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας
Category: Eschatology
Renders ho huios tēs apōleias (2:3). Semitic ‘son of X’ idiom for one destined for destruction; must not be read as literal parentage, divine origin, or a spirit-being ‘born of’ destruction. Must be kept sharply distinct in surrounding teaching from ‘iNdodana kaNkulunkulu’ (Son of God), which this phrase structurally parallels but theologically opposes.
Restrainer Impersonal
Approved rendering: okubambayo
Transliteration: okubambayo
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: τὸ κατέχον
Category: Eschatology
Renders to katechon (2:6), the neuter-grammar restrainer. Ndebele’s oku- noun class naturally mirrors the Greek’s impersonal grammar. The restrainer’s identity is deliberately unresolved in the Greek and must remain unresolved in the Ndebele text; must never be identified as an ancestral protective spirit (idlozi).
Restrainer Personal
Approved rendering: obambayo
Transliteration: obambayo
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ὁ κατέχων
Category: Eschatology
Renders ho katechōn (2:7), the masculine-grammar restrainer, paired with okubambayo. This is God’s own sovereign restraint, directly or through an appointed agent — never ancestral protection.
Revealed
Approved rendering: ukwembulwa
Transliteration: ukwembulwa
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord; The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ἀποκαλύπτω / ἀποκάλυψις
Category: Eschatology
Renders apokalyptō/apokalypsis, applied to Christ’s own revealing (1:7) and the lawless one’s unveiling (2:3, 6, 8). Must convey a definite, public, unmistakable unveiling event, never a private vision or a diviner’s (isangoma’s) insight. Must remain lexically identical across all occurrences.
Strong Delusion
Approved rendering: ukusebenza kokuduha
Transliteration: ukusebenza kokuduha
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: ἐνέργεια πλάνης
Category: Judgment
Renders energeian planēs (2:11). God’s own righteous judicial response confirming in delusion those who already, deliberately, rejected the truth (2:10). Must be taught explicitly as sequential judicial hardening, not an arbitrary curse or ancestral affliction.
Judgment
Approved rendering: ukwahlulelwa
Transliteration: ukwahlulelwa
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: κρίνω / κρίσις
Category: Judgment
Renders krinō/krisis (2:12); the compound ‘righteous judgment’ (1:5) should render as ‘ukwahlulela okulungileyo,’ built visibly on the Critical root ‘ukulunga’ to keep the forensic sense legible. Must convey a formal judicial verdict from God, never misfortune, curse, or impersonal fate.
Eternal Destruction
Approved rendering: ukubhujiswa okungapheliyo
Transliteration: ukubhujiswa okungapheliyo
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος
Category: Judgment
Renders olethros aiōnios (1:9). Conscious, unending exclusion ‘away from the presence of the Lord’; must never suggest the person joins the amadlozi, becomes a wandering spirit (isipoko), or is simply annihilated without ongoing moral significance. Must always appear with its qualifying clause, never as a bare compound.
Traditions
Approved rendering: izimfundiso ezidluliselwayo
Transliteration: izimfundiso ezidluliselwayo
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Rejected alternatives: amasiko
Original: παραδόσεις / παράδοσις
Category: Church
Renders paradoseis/paradosis (2:15; 3:6). THE SINGLE HIGHEST-PRIORITY NEW TERM in this book. ‘Amasiko,’ the everyday Ndebele word for ‘traditions,’ denotes specifically ancestral/cultural custom (rites toward amadlozi, inheritance and kinship rules) and must NEVER be used here. This is the fixed body of apostolic gospel doctrine received from Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to be held fast and passed on unchanged — not inherited ancestral practice. Reinforce the ‘handed down by the apostles’ sense explicitly in teaching notes at every recurrence.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: umusa
Transliteration: umusa
Doctrine: Grace
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Unmerited favor; must not be softened into reciprocal kindness or a reward for ritual correctness. Frames the letter’s opening (1:2,12) and closing (3:18).
Faith
Approved rendering: ukholo
Transliteration: ukholo
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Object of faith must remain Christ; contrasts the Thessalonians’ growing faith (1:3-4) with those who refuse to believe the truth (2:12).
Called
Approved rendering: obiziweyo
Transliteration: obiziweyo
Doctrine: Calling of God
Original: κλητός / καλέω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Must convey God’s own sovereign summons (1:11; 2:14), never an ancestral spirit’s call to mediumship.
Calling
Approved rendering: ubizo
Transliteration: ubizo
Doctrine: Calling of God
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Grounds the Thessalonians’ assurance amid persecution (1:11).

Transliteration: ngcwele

Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Used of the saints among whom Christ will be glorified at his coming (1:10).
Saints
Approved rendering: abangcwele
Transliteration: abangcwele

Sanctification
Approved rendering: ukungcweliswa
Transliteration: ukungcweliswa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. The Spirit’s means of realizing God’s choice of the Thessalonians (2:13); distinguish from ritual cleansing rites for the ancestors.
Sin
Approved rendering: isono
Transliteration: isono

Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Implicit backdrop against which ‘lawlessness’ (anomia) in chapter 2 is a heightened, personified form.
Glory
Approved rendering: udumo
Transliteration: udumo
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Rejected alternatives: inkazimulo
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Used of believers obtaining Christ’s glory (2:14) and Christ glorified in his saints (1:9-10,12).
Father
Approved rendering: uBaba
Transliteration: uBaba
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Source of eternal comfort and good hope (1:1-2; 2:16); anchored to the specific Father-Son relationship, not a generic ancestral-elder figure.
Election
Approved rendering: ukukhethwa
Transliteration: ukukhethwa
Doctrine: God’s Calling and Election
Original: αἱρέομαι (verb, ἐκλογή concept)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. God’s choice of the Thessalonians ‘from the beginning’ (2:13) grounds their assurance amid the coming eschatological turmoil.
Law
Approved rendering: umthetho
Transliteration: umthetho
Doctrine: Righteousness of God
Original: νόμος (root of ἀνομία)
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Conceptual root of ‘anomia’ (lawlessness), the defining trait of the Man of Lawlessness; must not be rendered with customary-law or ancestral-taboo vocabulary.
Gathering Together
Approved rendering: ukubuthana
Transliteration: ukubuthana
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἐπισυναγωγή
Category: Eschatology
Renders episynagōgē (2:1). The final, once-for-all eschatological gathering to Christ; must be modified with an eschatological time marker so it is not flattened into ibandla’s ordinary weekly assembly.
Rebellion
Approved rendering: ukuhlubuka
Transliteration: ukuhlubuka
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἀποστασία
Category: Eschatology
Renders apostasia (2:3). A specific, definite religious defection from the Christian faith preceding the Day of the Lord, not general moral decline or political unrest.
Lawlessness
Approved rendering: ukungabi lomthetho
Transliteration: ukungabi lomthetho
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ἀνομία
Category: Eschatology
Renders anomia (2:3, 7). Rejection of God’s own moral law specifically; must not denote mere social disorder or violation of customary/ancestral taboo, which carry a distinct enforcement logic in Ndebele culture.
Mystery Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: imfihlo yokungabi lomthetho
Transliteration: imfihlo yokungabi lomthetho
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
Renders to mystērion tēs anomias (2:7). A hidden spiritual-moral reality already operative in history; must not carry connotations of occult or esoteric secret knowledge accessible through divination, a real risk given ‘imfihlo’s traditional associations.
Appearing
Approved rendering: ukubonakala
Transliteration: ukubonakala
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἐπιφάνεια
Category: Eschatology
Renders epiphaneia (2:8), paired with parousia to intensify certainty and visibility. Must exclude private ‘spiritual appearance’ readings of the sort claimed in ancestor-spirit visitation experiences.
Satanic Activity
Approved rendering: ukusebenza kukaSathane

Category: Eschatology
Renders dynamis kai sēmeia kai terata pseudous (2:9). Genuine-seeming supernatural displays rooted in and serving falsehood; must not be read as fake/non-supernatural, nor as proof of divine origin akin to claims made by izangoma/izinyanga.
Unrighteousness
Approved rendering: ukungalungi
Transliteration: ukungalungi
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: ἀδικία
Category: Sin
Renders adikia (2:10, 12). Direct antonym of ‘ukulunga’; consistency between the two terms is essential for the passage’s forensic logic. Anchor to ‘iqiniso’ (truth) as its paired concept.
Vengeance
Approved rendering: impindiselo
Transliteration: impindiselo
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: ἐκδίκησις
Category: Judgment
Renders ekdikēsis (1:8). Must always have an explicit divine grammatical subject; risk of being read as the impersonal ingozi avenging-spirit mechanism rather than God’s own deliberate, righteous, judicial act.
Persecutions
Approved rendering: ukuzingelwa
Transliteration: ukuzingelwa
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: διωγμοί
Category: Perseverance
Renders diōgmoi (1:4). Hostility endured specifically for the faith; always specify the cause clause (‘ngenxa yokholo’).
Perseverance
Approved rendering: ukukhuthazela
Transliteration: ukukhuthazela
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Perseverance
