Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Matthew (English → Ndebele)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the entire book of Matthew, chapter 1 through chapter 28. Terms marked [Baseline TM] are already fixed in the Romans translation_memory.json and must be reused exactly, with no deviation. Terms marked [NEW] are proposed additions to the language package specifically required by Matthew’s curriculum and doctrines, extending but never contradicting the baseline.

Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions:

  • Critical — Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
  • High — Human theologian review required.
  • Medium — Native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — Automated review sufficient.

Total new terms proposed for the Matthew extension: 59, all cross-referenced to the baseline where a related term already exists, and none contradicting an existing baseline rendering.

Cross-Cutting Doctrinal Risk Notes for Ndebele (Matthew-Specific)

  1. “Kingdom of heaven” vs. “kingdom of God”: Matthew’s characteristic phrase (umbuso wamazulu) must be taught as referring to the identical reality as the baseline’s kingdom_of_god (umbuso kaNkulunkulu). Do not allow readers to infer two different kingdoms or a spatial afterlife-only referent for “heaven” (amazulu).

  2. Worship (ukukhonza) is the single highest-frequency Critical-risk term newly introduced by Matthew. Because “ukukhonza” legitimately covers homage to a chief and reverence toward ancestors as well as worship of God, every occurrence (2:2, 2:11, 4:9-10, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33, 15:25, 20:20, 28:9, 28:17) requires confirmation that the worship rendered to Jesus is being taught as the worship due to God alone.

  3. Demon/unclean spirit vs. amadlozi: this is a new and severe collision risk not present in the Romans baseline (which does not narrate exorcisms). Every demon/unclean-spirit passage (chs. 8, 9, 12, 15, 17) requires explicit teaching that biblical demons are hostile beings with no positive counterpart among the amadlozi.

  4. Blood and body (ch. 26) constitute the single highest new collision risk in the whole Matthew extension, given the centrality of blood-based ritual in establishing or renewing bonds with ancestors in traditional Ndebele religion. This doctrine requires the same theologian-review priority as the baseline’s intercession term.

  5. The temple veil (27:51) should be actively used as a positive teaching resource: it visually enacts the very doctrine the baseline identifies as most urgent for Ndebele audiences — that Christ has removed, once for all, the barrier that once restricted direct access to God.

This glossary extends, and does not contradict, the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json for Romans. All Table 1 terms must be enforced exactly as recorded in the baseline. All Table 2 terms are proposed for formal addition to the translation memory and bible term registry in the next Phase 1 step.

Inherited from Romans package; central to Matthew’s Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees doctrine (5:20, 5:48, 6:1-18, 23:1-36) — a Spirit-enabled heart righteousness, not stricter scribal-Pharisaic rule-keeping.

Justification

Approved rendering: ukulungisiswa
Transliteration: ukulungisiswa
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: δικαίωσις
Category: Salvation

Being made/declared righteous; kept distinct from moral improvement. Inherited from Romans package; underlies Matthew’s ransom saying (20:28) and blood of the covenant (26:28).

Salvation

Approved rendering: usindiso
Transliteration: usindiso
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

Must not be reduced to physical rescue or protection from misfortune. Inherited from Romans package; named at Jesus’ birth (1:21, ‘he will save his people from their sins’) and pressed as an urgent question in 19:25-26.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: ukuvuka kwabafileyo
Transliteration: ukuvuka kwabafileyo
Doctrine: Resurrection of Jesus Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Bodily, historical, once-for-all rising; must never be conflated with joining the amadlozi. Inherited from Romans package; narrated as accomplished fact in Matthew 28 after repeated prediction (12:40, 16:21, 17:23, 20:19, 26:32).

Lord

Approved rendering: iNkosi
Transliteration: iNkosi
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Exclusive, supreme lordship, exceeding the historical royal title carried by Ndebele kings. Inherited from Romans package; in Matthew underlies ‘iNkosi yamaJuda’ (2:2, 27:11-37).

Son Of God

Approved rendering: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal divine Sonship. Inherited from Romans package; confessed at 14:33, 16:16, 27:54; must remain sharply distinct from the generic ‘sons of God’ identity of believers (5:9).

Incarnation

Approved rendering: ukuba ngumuntu
Transliteration: ukuba ngumuntu
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο
Category: Christology

God the Son permanently becoming human, not temporary spirit-possession. Inherited from Romans package; grounded in Matthew’s virgin conception/Immanuel naming (1:18-23) and the body given at the Last Supper (26:26).

Messiah

Approved rendering: uMesiya
Transliteration: uMesiya
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology

The Anointed One fulfilled exclusively in Jesus. Inherited from Romans package; interchangeable with the new term ‘uKristu,’ preserve where the specific Jewish messianic-expectation background is in view, as in the genealogy (1:1, 1:16-17) and Peter’s confession (16:16).

Intercession

Approved rendering: ukuncengela
Transliteration: ukuncengela
Doctrine: Prayer
Original: ὑπερεντυγχάνει / ἔντευξις
Category: Faith

CRITICAL: prayer on behalf of others; Christ alone mediates, with no need for ancestral intermediaries. Inherited from Romans package; reinforced dramatically in Matthew by the torn temple veil (27:51).

Jesus

Approved rendering: uJesu
Transliteration: uJesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς / יֵשׁוּעַ
Category: Christology

Standard, well-established Nguni Bible transliteration. Inherited from Romans package; given at 1:21 with its own meaning explained (‘he will save his people from their sins’).

God

Approved rendering: uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Original: θεός / אֱלֹהִים / יהוה
Category: God

CRITICAL: the established Nguni term for the Supreme Being; the risk is traditional framing as remote and reached only through amadlozi. Inherited from Romans package; Matthew’s Immanuel theme (1:23, 28:20) and torn veil (27:51) both directly counter this framing.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: uMoya oNgcwele
Transliteration: uMoya oNgcwele
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifting
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God

The third Person of the Trinity, personal and divine, never amadlozi or a possessing spirit. Inherited from Romans package; present at the virgin conception (1:18,20), John’s prediction (3:11), Jesus’ baptism (3:16), the blasphemy warning (12:31-32), and the baptismal formula (28:19).

Imputed Righteousness

Approved rendering: ukubalelwa ukulunga
Transliteration: ukubalelwa ukulunga
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Original: ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην
Category: Salvation

Righteousness credited by faith, not earned. Inherited from Romans package; undergirds the grace/reward tension in Matthew 20:1-16 and the ransom saying of 20:28.

Christ

Approved rendering: uKristu
Transliteration: uKristu
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Used as title and increasingly as proper name (1:1, 1:16, 16:16, 16:20, 26:63). Interchangeable with ‘uMesiya’; both must be taught as pointing exclusively to Jesus, not one anointed figure among others.

Son Of David

Approved rendering: iNdodana kaDavida
Transliteration: iNdodana kaDavida
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Original: υἱὸς Δαυίδ
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Royal messianic title (1:1, 9:27, 12:23, 15:22, 20:30-31, 21:9, 21:15, 22:42) asserting Jesus’ legal and royal right to David’s throne. Distinct from ‘inzalo kaDavida’ (physical descent); reinforces, never rivals, Christ’s supreme lordship.

Immanuel

Approved rendering: uEmanuweli (uNkulunkulu ulinathi)
Transliteration: uEmanuweli
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: Ἐμμανουήλ
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. “God with us” (1:23, citing Isaiah 7:14; echoed 28:20). One of the most doctrinally important renderings in the whole curriculum: directly asserts uNkulunkulu is not remote or reached only through amadlozi, but personally present through Christ.

Virgin

Approved rendering: intombi emsulwa
Transliteration: intombi emsulwa
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: παρθένος
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Matthew 1:23. Must unambiguously convey sexual virginity, not merely youthful unmarried status, to preserve the miraculous conception and guard against readings of ordinary paternity or temporary spirit-possession.

King Of The Jews

Approved rendering: iNkosi yamaJuda
Transliteration: iNkosi yamaJuda
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Brackets the Gospel from birth (2:2) to death (27:11, 29, 37). Built on the Critical ‘lord’ term; the mocking irony must not undercut Christ’s genuine supreme kingship, exceeding the historical weight ‘iNkosi’ carries for Ndebele kings.

Worship

Approved rendering: ukukhonza
Transliteration: ukukhonza
Doctrine: Worship Due to God Alone
Original: προσκυνέω
Category: Worship

NEW TERM, highest-frequency Critical collision in Matthew. Occurs at least ten times (2:2, 2:11, 4:9-10, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33, 15:25, 20:20, 28:9, 28:17). ‘Ukukhonza’ also covers chiefly homage and amadlozi reverence; every occurrence describing worship of Jesus must make explicit this is worship due to God alone.

Son Of Man

Approved rendering: iNdodana yomuntu
Transliteration: iNdodana yomuntu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Jesus’ most frequent self-designation (~30 occurrences), drawing on Daniel 7:13-14. Combines humility (8:20) with supreme divine authority (9:6, 24:30); must not be reduced to mere self-reference or confused with an ancestor/spirit-being.

Demon

Approved rendering: idimoni / umoya omubi
Transliteration: idimoni
Doctrine: Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom
Original: δαιμόνιον / πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον
Category: Spiritual Warfare

NEW TERM, one of the highest-risk terms in the whole curriculum. Recurring chs. 8, 9, 12, 15, 17. Must be sharply distinguished from amadlozi, regarded in tradition as benevolent/neutral intermediaries, never evil beings to be cast out.

Hades

Approved rendering: amasango eHayidesi / isihogo
Transliteration: iHayidesi
Doctrine: The Church and Church Discipline
Original: ᾅδης
Category: Eschatology

NEW TERM. “The gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (16:18); the realm of the dead/death’s power, kept distinct from the amadlozi/spirit-world framework, not a place of ongoing communication with departed ancestors.

Eternal Life

Approved rendering: ukuphila okuphakade
Transliteration: ukuphila okuphakade
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus

Doctrine: Grace
Original: χάρις

Well-established Nguni Bible term for unmerited favor; must not be softened into reciprocal kindness or a reward for correctly honoring the ancestors. Inherited from Romans package; in Matthew the doctrine analysis elevates this doctrine’s practical risk to Critical because of the reward language in 5:3, 5:11-12, and 20:1-16, where ‘umvuzo’ must not collapse grace into merit.

Faith

Approved rendering: ukholo
Transliteration: ukholo
