Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — Matthew (English → Ndebele)
This document is the full doctrine matrix for the Gospel of Matthew, covering every chapter from Mathewu 1 to Mathewu 28. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 29 doctrines, the same risk tiers (14 Critical, 10 High, 3 Medium, 2 Low), and the same review routing. This document does not introduce any new doctrine or alter any risk tier already assigned; it exists to (a) present the complete matrix in one place, (b) trace every doctrine across its full range of supporting Matthew passages, and (c) walk chapter-by-chapter through the whole book so that no chapter is silently skipped, per the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate.
Risk tier definitions (unchanged from baseline):
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.
Part 1 — Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Ndebele Doctrine Name | Risk | Supporting Passages (Matthew) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sovereignty of God | Ubukhulu bukaNkulunkulu Phezu Kwakho Konke | Critical | Mathewu 6:25-34; 10:29-31; 19:26; 28:18 | uNkulunkulu’s rule over provision, sparrows, human impossibility, and all authority must read as direct and personal, never mediated through amadlozi, and never flattened into passive fatalism (“kuvele kuyinjalo”). | Human theologian |
| 2 | Christ as Sole Mediator | UKristu Nguye Yedwa Umlamuli | Critical | Mathewu 9:2-6; 11:27; 27:51 | Jesus forgiving sin on his own authority and the torn veil must never be softened in a way that reopens space for an ancestral intermediary between the believer and uNkulunkulu. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Grace | Umusa | Critical | Mathewu 5:3; 5:11-12; 20:1-16 | ”umvuzo” (reward/wage) in the Beatitudes and the parable of the workers must be taught as gracious commendation flowing from prior grace, not wages earned by merit or ritual correctness. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Incarnation | Ukuba Ngumuntu kukaNkulunkulu iNdodana | Critical | Mathewu 1:1; 1:18-23 | The virgin conception and the Immanuel naming must convey permanent, unique divine embodiment, never temporary spirit-possession as recognized in traditional practice. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Sonship of Christ | Ubudodana bukaKristu | Critical | Mathewu 3:17; 11:27; 16:16; 17:5; 26:63-64 | Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal divine Sonship must stay sharply distinct from believers’ generic “sons of God” status (5:9) and from any ancestor/spirit-being framing. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Resurrection of Jesus Christ | Ukuvuka kukaKristu Kwabafileyo | Critical | Mathewu 12:40; 16:21; 17:23; 20:19; 26:32; 28:1-10 | Bodily, historical, once-for-all rising, narrated as accomplished fact; must never be conflated with a deceased person joining the amadlozi. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Lordship of Jesus Christ | Ubukhosi bukaJesu Kristu | Critical | Mathewu 2:2; 8:23-27; 21:9; 28:18-20 | ”iNkosi”/“iNkosi yamaJuda” carry the historical weight of Ndebele royal titles (Mzilikazi, Lobengula); Christ’s lordship must be taught as exceeding, not merely competing within, that framework. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David | Isithembiso soMesiya leNdodana kaDavida | Critical | Mathewu 1:1; 1:17; 9:27; 15:22; 21:9; 22:41-45 | ”iNdodana kaDavida” is a royal-kingship claim that must reinforce, not compete with, Christ’s supreme lordship; must not read as one royal or religious figure among others. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy | Ukugcwaliseka Kwesiprofetho Se-Testamente Elidala | Critical | Mathewu 1:22-23; 2:15; 2:17-18; 2:23; 4:14-16; 8:17; 12:17-21; 13:35; 21:4-5; 26:56; 27:9-10 | ”ukugcwalisa” must convey deliberate, divinely sovereign fulfillment of a specific prior prophetic word, never vague coincidence or a divinatory-style discernment of hidden meaning in events. | Human theologian |
| 10 | The Atoning Ransom and Blood of Christ | Inhlawulo Legazi likaKristu | Critical | Mathewu 20:28; 26:26-28 | The single highest collision risk in the curriculum: blood covenants are central to bonding with amadlozi in Ndebele tradition. Christ’s body and blood must be taught as a once-for-all, sufficient, unrepeatable sacrifice directly with uNkulunkulu, never assimilated to ancestral blood-ritual or appeasement. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | Ukulunga Okwedlula okwabaFarisi | Critical | Mathewu 5:20; 5:48; 6:1-18; 23:1-36 | ”ukulunga” must be taught as Spirit-enabled heart righteousness exceeding external scribal-Pharisaic rule-keeping, not merely stricter law observance, since “ukulunga” also denotes ordinary good/moral conduct in everyday usage. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Judgment and the End of the Age | Ukwahlulelwa Lokuphela Kwesikhathi | Critical | Mathewu 7:21-23; 13:36-43; 24:1-51; 25:1-46 | Christ’s parousia (personal, visible, historical return) must never be confused with an ancestral spirit’s reappearance or any cyclical reincarnation notion, given that the departed are believed to remain present as amadlozi. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Worship Due to God Alone | Ukukhonza Okufanele uNkulunkulu Yedwa | Critical | Mathewu 2:2; 2:11; 4:9-10; 14:33; 28:9; 28:17 | ”ukukhonza” legitimately covers both homage to a chief and reverence given to amadlozi; every occurrence describing worship of Jesus must make explicit this is worship due to God alone. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom | Ukuphikiswa Ngamadimoni Kombuso | Critical | Mathewu 8:28-34; 9:32-34; 12:22-32; 15:21-28; 17:14-20 | Biblical demons must be sharply distinguished from amadlozi, regarded in tradition as benevolent or neutral intermediaries deserving reverence, not hostile beings to be cast out; this category difference must never blur. | Human theologian |
| 15 | The Kingdom of Heaven | Umbuso Wamazulu | High | Mathewu 3:2; 4:17; 5:3-10; 13:1-52; 18:1-4 | ”amazulu” must not be read as the abode of amadlozi or a spirit-world reached only through ancestral mediation; “umbuso” carries the historical weight of the Ndebele kingdom under Mzilikazi/Lobengula, requiring reframing as God’s sovereign reign, not a territorial kingdom. | Human theologian |
| 16 | The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching | Igunya Lemfundiso kaJesu | High | Mathewu 5:1-2; 7:28-29; 21:23-27; 23:8-10; 28:18 | ”igunya” must be sharply distinct from the claimed authority of izangoma (diviners) and izinyanga (traditional healers), and must exceed any human religious-teacher title, including “rabi”/“umfundisi.” | Human theologian |
| 17 | The Church and Church Discipline | Ibandla Lokuqondiswa Kwebandla | High | Mathewu 16:18-19; 18:15-20; 18:21-35 | ”ukubopha lokukhulula” (binding and loosing) must be taught as authority derived from and exercised under Christ’s own authority for restoration, not independent ecclesial power, and not confused with binding/loosing rituals practiced by traditional healers. | Human theologian |
| 18 | The Great Commission | Umlayo Omkhulu Wokutshumayela | High | Mathewu 28:16-20 | ”ukwenza abafundi” must convey active discipling through baptism and ongoing teaching, not merely informing people about Jesus; “zonke izizwe” must be comprehensively universal, distinct from the baseline’s narrower “abezizwe.” | Human theologian |
| 19 | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus | Ubufundi Lentengo Yokulandela uJesu | High | Mathewu 4:18-22; 10:37-39; 16:24-26; 19:27-29; 26:39-42 | ”ukulandela” and “isiphambano” must convey total, costly, potentially fatal life-reorientation around Jesus, not casual admiration; “umphefumulo” must not be conflated with the soul continuing after death as an idlozi. | Human theologian |
| 20 | God’s Calling and Election | Ukubizwa Lokukhethwa nguNkulunkulu | High | Mathewu 4:18-22; 22:1-14; 24:22-31 | God’s sovereign summons (“many are called, but few are chosen,” 22:14) must not be flattened into fatalism nor confused with an ancestral spirit’s call to mediumship, a recognized vocation in Ndebele culture. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Humanity’s Sinfulness | Isono Sesintu | High | Mathewu 1:21; 3:7-10; 15:18-20; 26:28 | Moral transgression before a personal God must be distinguished from ritual impurity or an offense against amadlozi requiring appeasement. | Human theologian |
| 22 | The Law | Umthetho | High | Mathewu 5:17-20; 12:1-14; 15:1-9; 22:34-40 | The Mosaic Law, reinterpreted and fulfilled by Christ, must not be rendered with a term for customary law (isiko) or ancestral taboo, which carry a distinct enforcement logic in Ndebele culture. | Human theologian |
| 23 | Authority of Scripture (and True Prophecy) | Amandla eLizwi likaNkulunkulu leSiprofetho Seqiniso | High | Mathewu 1:22-23; 2:5-6; 7:15-23; 11:9-13; 23:29-37 | Biblical prophets and true prophecy must be sharply distinguished from isangoma or inyanga; the false-prophet warning (7:15) further requires discernment even among claimed Christian prophetic ministry. | Human theologian |
| 24 | Mercy and Love as the Heart of the Law | Isihawu Lothando Njengenhliziyo Yomthetho | High | Mathewu 5:7; 9:13; 22:37-40; 23:23 | ”isihawu” and “uthando” must reflect God’s own compassionate, self-giving character revealed in Christ, not social benevolence exchanged for reciprocal favor or kinship-network obligation. | Human theologian |
| 25 | Prayer | Umkhuleko | Medium | Mathewu 6:5-15; 7:7-11; 18:19-20; 26:36-46 | The Lord’s Prayer and Gethsemane model direct address to uBaba without ritual or ancestral intermediary; reinforces the Christ-alone-mediator doctrine above. | Native speaker review |
| 26 | Mission to the Gentiles | Umsebenzi Wokutshumayela Kwabezizwe | Medium | Mathewu 8:5-13; 15:21-28; 28:19 | Standard term, moderate ambiguity; care needed given Zimbabwe’s own Ndebele-Shona ethnic history when Jewish/Gentile categories are discussed, keeping focus on the biblical text. | Native speaker review |
| 27 | Universal Need for Salvation | Ukudingeka Kosindiso Kubo Bonke | Medium | Mathewu 3:9-10; 8:11-12; 21:43 | Both Jew and Gentile stand equally in need of salvation; requires care not to be read as ethnic favoritism or its opposite, given Zimbabwe’s own history of ethnic tension. | Native speaker review |
| 28 | Christian Encouragement | Ukukhuthazwa kuKristu | Low | Mathewu 5:11-12; 9:2; 14:27 | Standard, low-ambiguity encouragement and comfort language. | Automated review |
| 29 | Fellowship of Believers | Ubudlelwano Babakholwayo | Low | Mathewu 18:20 | The family-like bond of shared life in Christ; low ambiguity risk. | Automated review |
Risk totals (matching doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly): Critical 14 · High 10 · Medium 3 · Low 2 · Total 29 doctrines · 24 requiring theologian review · 3 requiring native speaker review · 2 automated-only.
Part 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Coverage (Mathewu 1–28)
Every chapter of Matthew is listed below with the doctrines from Part 1 that it carries, the load-bearing terms involved (per analysis/08_core_glossary.md), and the dominant translation risk to watch. Chapters are dense with doctrine throughout Matthew; none are doctrine-empty, but each is explicitly logged per the full-book-coverage mandate.
| Ch. | Doctrines Present | Key Terms | Dominant Translation Risk | Routing (highest applicable) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Incarnation; Jesus as Promised Messiah/Son of David; Fulfillment of OT Prophecy; Authority of Scripture; Humanity’s Sinfulness | incarnation, immanuel, virgin, seed_of_david, fulfillment, sin | Virgin conception (1:18-23) and Immanuel naming must be permanent divine embodiment, not spirit-possession; genealogy anchors the Davidic/messianic claim. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Lordship of Christ; Worship Due to God Alone; Fulfillment of OT Prophecy; Authority of Scripture | king_of_the_jews, worship, fulfillment, prophecy | The Magi’s “ukukhonza” (2:2, 2:11) toward the infant king must be flagged as worship due to God alone, not chieftain-homage; Herod’s rival kingship anticipates Lordship doctrine. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Sonship of Christ; The Kingdom of Heaven; Humanity’s Sinfulness; Universal Need for Salvation | father, holy_spirit, repentance, kingdom_of_heaven, sin | The Father’s voice (3:17) and the Spirit’s descent must be read as Trinitarian, not adoptive; John’s repentance call (ukuphenduka) must be transformative, not ritual appeasement. | Human theologian |
| 4 | The Kingdom of Heaven; Worship Due to God Alone; Discipleship and Cost of Following; God’s Calling and Election; Fulfillment of OT Prophecy | temptation, kingdom_of_heaven, worship, follow, calling, fulfillment | Satan’s demand for “ukukhonza” (4:9-10) is the sharpest early test case for worship-due-to-God-alone; the calling of the first disciples (4:18-22) models total, costly reorientation. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Core passage. Grace; Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees; The Kingdom of Heaven; Authority of Jesus’ Teaching; The Law; Mercy and Love; Christian Encouragement | kingdom_of_heaven, righteousness, perfect, law, mercy, adoption (5:9), reward, exhort | Highest doctrinal density in the book. Beatitude reward language (5:11-12, “umvuzo”) must not slide into merit; “ukulunga” in 5:20/5:48 must exceed Pharisaic rule-keeping; “abantwana bakaNkulunkulu” (5:9) must stay distinct from Christ’s unique Sonship. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Sovereignty of God; Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees; Prayer | providence, hypocrite, righteousness, father | The Lord’s Prayer (6:9) and “do not be anxious” (6:25-34) both model direct, unmediated address to uBaba; hypocrisy warnings (6:1-18) reinforce heart-level righteousness. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Judgment and the End of the Age; Authority of Jesus’ Teaching; Authority of Scripture; Prayer | judge, authority, false_prophet, prayer | ”Many will say to me, Lord, Lord…” (7:21-23) previews final judgment; the false-prophet warning (7:15) requires the umphrofethi/isangoma distinction to be actively maintained. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy; Lordship of Christ; Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom; Mission to the Gentiles; Universal Need for Salvation | fulfillment, lord, demon, gentiles | The Gerasene demoniacs (8:28-34) are the first full exorcism narrative; idimoni must never read as an amadlozi encounter, but as hostile opposition Christ’s authority (igunya) overcomes. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Christ as Sole Mediator; Jesus as Promised Messiah/Son of David; Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom; Mercy and Love; Christian Encouragement | intercession/forgive, son_of_david, demon, mercy, exhort | Jesus forgiving sin directly and audibly (9:2-6) is a direct-access set piece — no priest, no ancestor, no ritual intermediary is invoked. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Sovereignty of God; Discipleship and Cost of Following Jesus | providence, follow, cross (anticipated), soul_life | The Twelve’s commissioning previews cost-of-discipleship themes fully developed later (10:37-39); sparrows/hairs (10:29-31) ground God’s providence in personal, not fatalistic, care. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Christ as Sole Mediator; Sonship of Christ; Authority of Scripture | father, son_of_god, prophet, rest | ”All things have been handed over to me by my Father” (11:27) is a strong Sonship/mediator text; John the Baptist’s status as prophet (11:9-13) reinforces the prophet/isangoma distinction. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Resurrection of Jesus Christ; Fulfillment of OT Prophecy; Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom; The Law | resurrection, fulfillment, demon, blasphemy, sabbath, law | The “sign of Jonah” (12:40) is the first explicit resurrection prediction; the Beelzebul controversy (12:22-32) sharply distinguishes Spirit-empowered exorcism from demonic power, with the blasphemy warning attached. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy; Judgment and the End of the Age; The Kingdom of Heaven | fulfillment, mystery, kingdom_of_heaven, end_of_the_age, weeping_and_gnashing_of_teeth | The kingdom parables (13:1-52) require “imfihlo” (mystery) to be divine disclosure, not divinatory secret-knowledge; the wheat/weeds parable (13:36-43) previews final judgment. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Worship Due to God Alone; Christian Encouragement | worship, exhort | The disciples’ worship of Jesus after the water-walking (14:33) is an explicit worship-due-to-God-alone flag point; “Take heart, it is I” (14:27) models comfort grounded in Christ’s presence. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Jesus as Promised Messiah/Son of David; Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom; Humanity’s Sinfulness; The Law; Mission to the Gentiles | son_of_david, demon, defile, tradition, law, gentiles | The Canaanite woman’s plea to the “iNdodana kaDavida” (15:22) and her daughter’s deliverance is both a messianic-title and demonic-opposition passage; “defile” (15:18-20) must be heart-level, not ritual, contamination — note the collision with tradition (isiko) in 15:1-9. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Sonship of Christ; Resurrection of Jesus Christ; The Church and Church Discipline; Discipleship and Cost of Following Jesus | son_of_god, resurrection, church, keys, bind_and_loose, cross, follow | Peter’s confession (16:16) and the first resurrection prediction (16:21) anchor Christology; the keys/church founding (16:18-19) introduces derived, not independent, ecclesial authority; “take up his cross” (16:24-26) is the discipleship-cost thesis statement. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Sonship of Christ; Resurrection of Jesus Christ; Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom | beloved, glory, resurrection, demon, faith | The Transfiguration (17:5) repeats the Father’s “beloved Son” declaration heard at the baptism; the epileptic boy’s deliverance (17:14-20) again distinguishes demonic affliction from any ancestral-spirit framing. | Human theologian |
| 18 | The Church and Church Discipline; The Kingdom of Heaven; Prayer; Fellowship of Believers | church, keys, bind_and_loose, stumbling_block, forgive, kingdom_of_heaven, fellowship | The full church-discipline procedure (18:15-20) and the parable of the unforgiving servant (18:21-35) make forgiveness (ukuthethelela) foundational to discipline’s restorative aim, not punitive exclusion. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Sovereignty of God; Discipleship and Cost of Following Jesus | power_of_god, follow, eternal_life | ”With God all things are possible” (19:26) and Peter’s “what then will we have?” (19:27-29) frame discipleship’s cost against God’s sovereign, gracious provision, not a transactional ledger. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Grace; Resurrection of Jesus Christ; The Atoning Ransom and Blood of Christ | reward, resurrection, ransom | The parable of the workers (20:1-16) is the sharpest reward-vs-grace tension point in the book; “a ransom for many” (20:28) is the earliest explicit atonement statement, fully developed in ch. 26. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Lordship of Christ; Jesus as Promised Messiah/Son of David; Fulfillment of OT Prophecy; Authority of Jesus’ Teaching; Universal Need for Salvation | king_of_the_jews (anticipated), hosanna, son_of_david, fulfillment, authority, rejected_stone | The Triumphal Entry (21:9, “Hosana… iNdodana kaDavida”) fulfills specific prophecy (21:4-5); the rejected-stone citation (21:42-44, cf. 21:43) folds in the universal-salvation warning to Israel’s leadership. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Jesus as Promised Messiah/Son of David; The Law; Mercy and Love; God’s Calling and Election | son_of_david, love, called, election, covenant | ”Whose son is he?” (22:41-45) presses the Davidic-messianic identity to its logical (divine) conclusion; “love the Lord… love your neighbor” (22:37-40) names love as the Law’s summary; the wedding-feast parable (22:1-14) is the registry’s key “called/chosen” text. | Human theologian |
| 23 | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees; Authority of Jesus’ Teaching; Authority of Scripture; Mercy and Love | hypocrite, rabbi, authority, prophet, mercy, woe | The seven woes (23:1-36) are Matthew’s most sustained polemic against external, performative righteousness (umzenzisi); “you have one teacher” (23:8-10) relativizes every human “Rabi” beneath Christ’s authority. | Human theologian |
| 24 | Judgment and the End of the Age; God’s Calling and Election | end_of_the_age, parousia, sign, watch, election | The Olivet discourse’s “coming of the Son of Man” (parousia) is the single clearest test case against any ancestral-reappearance or reincarnation reading; the elect being gathered (24:22-31) ties judgment to election. | Human theologian |
| 25 | Judgment and the End of the Age | eternal_punishment, weeping_and_gnashing_of_teeth, talent | The sheep-and-goats judgment and the parable of the talents together define final, unending separation — “isijeziso esiphakade” must never be softened into a temporary or remediable state. | Human theologian |
| 26 | Sonship of Christ; Resurrection of Jesus Christ; The Atoning Ransom and Blood of Christ; Humanity’s Sinfulness; Discipleship and Cost of Following Jesus; Prayer; Fulfillment of OT Prophecy | son_of_god, resurrection, body, blood, covenant, sin, will_of_god, prayer, fulfillment | The Last Supper’s body/blood language (26:26-28) is the single highest new collision risk in the entire curriculum given Ndebele blood-covenant practice with amadlozi; Gethsemane (26:39-42) models submission to uBaba’s will without fatalism, directly and without intermediary. | Human theologian |
| 27 | Christ as Sole Mediator; Fulfillment of OT Prophecy | temple_veil, cry_of_dereliction, fulfillment, king_of_the_jews | The torn temple veil (27:51) is the strongest available positive teaching image for direct, unmediated access to God; the cry of dereliction is retained transliterated with gloss per the “Abha” convention and handled with the same care as Critical Christological terms. | Human theologian |
| 28 | Resurrection of Jesus Christ; Lordship of Christ; Sovereignty of God; Worship Due to God Alone; The Great Commission; Mission to the Gentiles; Authority of Jesus’ Teaching | resurrection, lord, worship, make_disciples, all_nations, baptism, holy_spirit, authority | The empty tomb (28:1-10), the disciples’ worship (28:9, 28:17), and the Great Commission’s Trinitarian formula (28:19) converge as the book’s doctrinal climax; “zonke izizwe” must read as comprehensively universal, and “ukwenza abafundi” as active, ongoing discipling. | Human theologian |
Coverage confirmation: All 28 chapters of Matthew have been reviewed against the doctrine set above. No chapter was found to be doctrine-empty; every chapter carries at least one Critical- or High-tier doctrine, consistent with Matthew’s dense theological structure. This chapter-by-chapter pass introduces no doctrine, risk tier, or Ndebele rendering beyond what is already fixed in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and analysis/08_core_glossary.md.
Part 3 — Notes on Consistency with the Baseline and the Registry
- No new doctrines introduced. This document uses exactly the 29 doctrines already defined in
assets/doctrine_risk_registry.jsonfor Matthew, in the same order of severity, with identical risk tiers and identical review routing. - Baseline doctrines carried forward unchanged. Every doctrine inherited from the Romans baseline (Sovereignty of God, Christ as Sole Mediator, Grace, Justification-adjacent Righteousness, Sonship of Christ, Resurrection, Lordship, Sanctification-adjacent categories, God’s Calling and Election, The Law, Authority of Scripture, Prayer, Mission to the Gentiles, Universal Need for Salvation, Christian Encouragement, Fellowship of Believers) retains its baseline Ndebele doctrine name and risk tier, extended here only with Matthew-specific supporting passages.
- Matthew-specific doctrines are additive, not substitutive. Incarnation, Sonship, Messianic Promise, Fulfillment of Prophecy, Atonement/Blood, Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees, Judgment/End of Age, Worship Due to God Alone, Demonic Opposition, Kingdom of Heaven, Authority of Jesus’ Teaching, Church and Church Discipline, Great Commission, and Discipleship/Cost of Following are all already present in the registry; this document supplies the full chapter trace that grounds each one across the whole book.
- The single dominant cross-cutting risk for Ndebele across nearly every Critical doctrine remains, as in the Romans baseline, the mediated-access cosmology of amadlozi: direct, personal access to uNkulunkulu through Christ alone must be reinforced at every Critical-tier occurrence, now dramatized concretely by Matthew’s Immanuel bracket (1:23; 28:20) and the torn temple veil (27:51).
This document extends, and does not contradict, translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json (Romans baseline) and the Matthew-specific assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and analysis/08_core_glossary.md. It is the Phase 1 Step 4 doctrine matrix deliverable for the Matthew curriculum in Ndebele.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Sovereignty of God
Ndebele name: Ubukhulu bukaNkulunkulu Phezu Kwakho Konke
Key terms: god, glory, providence, power_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
uNkulunkulu’s sovereign rule over all creation and provision (6:25-34) must be taught as direct and personal, not mediated through amadlozi, and not flattened into fatalistic acceptance of circumstance.
Christ as Sole Mediator
Ndebele name: UKristu Nguye Yedwa Umlamuli
Key terms: intercession, son_of_man, temple_veil, authority
Review routing: Human theologian
The torn temple veil (27:51) and Jesus’ direct authority to forgive sins on his own word (9:2-6) dramatize the removal of any intermediary; this must never be reintroduced through mediated-access phrasing elsewhere in translation or teaching, reinforcing the single most important doctrine for a Ndebele audience.
Grace
Ndebele name: Umusa
Key terms: grace, reward, imputed_righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
Reward language (‘umvuzo’) in the parable of the workers (20:1-16) and the Beatitudes (5:11-12) must be taught as gracious commendation flowing from prior grace, not wages earned — ‘umvuzo’s’ everyday sense of earned pay creates a live risk of collapsing grace into merit.
Incarnation
Ndebele name: Ukuba Ngumuntu kukaNkulunkulu iNdodana
Key terms: incarnation, immanuel, virgin, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
The virgin conception and Immanuel naming must convey permanent, unique divine embodiment, not a temporary spirit-possession of the kind recognized in traditional Ndebele religious practice.
Sonship of Christ
Ndebele name: Ubudodana bukaKristu
Key terms: son_of_god, father, beloved
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal divine Sonship must remain sharply distinct from the generic ‘sons of God’ identity given to believers (5:9) and from any honored ancestor or spirit-being framing.
Resurrection of Jesus Christ
Ndebele name: Ukuvuka kukaKristu Kwabafileyo
Key terms: resurrection, jesus
Review routing: Human theologian
Bodily, historical, once-for-all rising, narrated as accomplished fact in ch.28; must never be conflated with a deceased person joining the amadlozi, the culturally dominant understanding of what happens after death.
Lordship of Jesus Christ
Ndebele name: Ubukhosi bukaJesu Kristu
Key terms: lord, king_of_the_jews, son_of_man
Review routing: Human theologian
‘iNkosi’ and ‘iNkosi yamaJuda’ both carry the historical weight of Ndebele royal titles (Mzilikazi, Lobengula); Christ’s lordship must be taught as exceeding, not merely competing within, that framework.
Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Ndebele name: Isithembiso soMesiya leNdodana kaDavida
Key terms: messiah, christ, son_of_david, seed_of_david, david
Review routing: Human theologian
The specific Old Testament Davidic promise fulfilled exclusively in Jesus must not be read as one religious or royal figure among others; ‘iNdodana kaDavida’ is a royal kingship claim that must reinforce, not compete with, Christ’s supreme lordship.
Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
Ndebele name: Ukugcwaliseka Kwesiprofetho Se-Testamente Elidala
Key terms: fulfillment, prophecy, rejected_stone
Review routing: Human theologian
‘ukugcwalisa’ must convey deliberate, divinely sovereign fulfillment of a specific prior prophetic word, not vague coincidence or a general historical pattern the way traditional divination might claim to discern hidden meaning in events.
The Atoning Ransom and Blood of Christ
Ndebele name: Inhlawulo Legazi likaKristu
Key terms: ransom, body, blood, covenant
Review routing: Human theologian
The highest collision risk in the whole curriculum: blood covenants and blood-based ritual are central to establishing or renewing bonds with amadlozi in Ndebele tradition. Christ’s blood and body must be taught as a once-for-all, sufficient, unrepeatable atoning sacrifice directly with uNkulunkulu, never assimilated to ancestral blood-ritual or offered as appeasement.
Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Ndebele name: Ukulunga Okwedlula okwabaFarisi
Key terms: righteousness, perfect, hypocrite, law
Review routing: Human theologian
‘ukulunga’ must be taught as Spirit-enabled heart righteousness exceeding external scribal-Pharisaic rule-keeping, not simply stricter law observance — a live risk since ‘ukulunga’ also denotes ordinary good/moral conduct in everyday Ndebele usage.
Judgment and the End of the Age
Ndebele name: Ukwahlulelwa Lokuphela Kwesikhathi
Key terms: judge, end_of_the_age, eternal_punishment, parousia, weeping_and_gnashing_of_teeth
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s parousia (a personal, visible, historical return) must never be confused with an ancestral spirit’s reappearance or any cyclical notion of reincarnation — a serious risk in a culture where the departed are believed to remain present and active among the living as amadlozi.
Worship Due to God Alone
Ndebele name: Ukukhonza Okufanele uNkulunkulu Yedwa
Key terms: worship, son_of_god, lord
Review routing: Human theologian
‘ukukhonza’ legitimately covers both homage paid to a chief and reverence given to amadlozi in Ndebele usage; every occurrence describing worship of Jesus must make explicit this is the worship due to God alone.
Demonic Opposition to the Kingdom
Ndebele name: Ukuphikiswa Ngamadimoni Kombuso
Key terms: demon, blasphemy, kingdom_of_heaven
Review routing: Human theologian
Biblical demons must be sharply distinguished from amadlozi (ancestral spirits), which traditional Ndebele religion regards as benevolent or neutral intermediaries deserving reverence, not hostile beings to be cast out; this category difference must never be blurred.
High Risk Doctrines
The Kingdom of Heaven
Ndebele name: Umbuso Wamazulu
Key terms: kingdom_of_heaven, kingdom_of_god, mystery
Review routing: Human theologian
‘amazulu’ (heavens) must not be read as the abode of amadlozi or a spirit-world reached only through ancestral mediation; ‘umbuso’ also carries the historical weight of the Ndebele kingdom under Mzilikazi/Lobengula, requiring reframing as God’s sovereign reign, not a territorial kingdom.
The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
Ndebele name: Igunya Lemfundiso kaJesu
Key terms: authority, teach, rabbi, sabbath
Review routing: Human theologian
‘igunya’ must be sharply distinct from the claimed authority of izangoma (diviners) and izinyanga (traditional healers), and must exceed any human religious-teacher title, including ‘rabi’/‘umfundisi.‘
The Church and Church Discipline
Ndebele name: Ibandla Lokuqondiswa Kwebandla
Key terms: church, keys, bind_and_loose, stumbling_block, hades, forgive
Review routing: Human theologian
‘ukubopha lokukhulula’ (binding and loosing) must be taught as authority derived from and exercised under Christ’s own authority for restoration, not independent ecclesial power, and not confused with binding/loosing rituals practiced by traditional healers addressing spiritual bondage.
The Great Commission
Ndebele name: Umlayo Omkhulu Wokutshumayela
Key terms: make_disciples, all_nations, baptism, teach, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
‘ukwenza abafundi’ must convey active discipling through baptism and ongoing teaching, not merely informing people about Jesus or securing a one-time decision; ‘zonke izizwe’ must be understood as comprehensively universal, distinct from the baseline’s narrower ‘abezizwe.‘
Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Ndebele name: Ubufundi Lentengo Yokulandela uJesu
Key terms: disciple, follow, cross, soul_life, servant_slave, will_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
‘ukulandela’ and ‘isiphambano’ must convey total, costly, potentially fatal life-reorientation around Jesus, not casual admiration; ‘umphefumulo’ must not be conflated with the traditional concept of the soul continuing after death as an idlozi.
God’s Calling and Election
Ndebele name: Ukubizwa Lokukhethwa nguNkulunkulu
Key terms: called, calling, election, covenant
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s sovereign summons in ‘many are called, but few are chosen’ (22:14) must not be flattened into fatalism nor confused with an ancestral spirit’s call to mediumship, a recognized and significant vocation in Ndebele culture.
Humanity’s Sinfulness
Ndebele name: Isono Sesintu
Key terms: sin, demon, blasphemy
Review routing: Human theologian
Moral transgression before a personal God must be distinguished from ritual impurity or an offense against amadlozi requiring appeasement.
The Law
Ndebele name: Umthetho
Key terms: law, sabbath, tradition
Review routing: Human theologian
The Mosaic Law, reinterpreted and fulfilled by Christ, must not be rendered with a term for customary law (isiko) or ancestral taboo, which carry a distinct enforcement logic in Ndebele culture.
Authority of Scripture
Ndebele name: Amandla eLizwi likaNkulunkulu leSiprofetho Seqiniso
Key terms: prophet, prophecy, false_prophet, fulfillment
Review routing: Human theologian
Biblical prophets and true prophecy must be sharply distinguished from isangoma (diviner) or inyanga (traditional healer); the false-prophet warning (7:15) further requires discernment even among claimed Christian prophetic ministry.
Mercy and Love as the Heart of the Law
Ndebele name: Isihawu Lothando Njengenhliziyo Yomthetho
Key terms: mercy, love, hypocrite
Review routing: Human theologian
‘isihawu’ and ‘uthando’ must reflect God’s own compassionate, self-giving character revealed in Christ, not social benevolence exchanged for reciprocal favor or the deference/obligation customary within kinship networks.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Prayer
Ndebele name: Umkhuleko
Key terms: intercession
Review routing: Native speaker review
The Lord’s Prayer and Gethsemane model direct address to uBaba without any ritual or ancestral intermediary; reinforces the Christ-alone-mediator doctrine above.
Mission to the Gentiles
Ndebele name: Umsebenzi Wokutshumayela Kwabezizwe
Key terms: gentiles, all_nations, mission
Review routing: Native speaker review
Standard term with moderate ambiguity; care is needed given Zimbabwe’s own Ndebele-Shona ethnic history when Jewish/Gentile categories are discussed, keeping focus on the biblical text.
Universal Need for Salvation
Ndebele name: Ukudingeka Kosindiso Kubo Bonke
Key terms: sin, salvation, gentiles
Review routing: Native speaker review
Both Jew and Gentile stand equally in need of salvation; requires care not to be read as ethnic favoritism or its opposite, a sensitivity heightened by Zimbabwe’s own history of ethnic tension between Ndebele and Shona communities.
Low Risk Doctrines
Christian Encouragement
Ndebele name: Ukukhuthazwa kuKristu
Key terms: exhort
Review routing: Automated review
Standard, low-ambiguity encouragement and gratitude language.
Fellowship of Believers
Ndebele name: Ubudlelwano Babakholwayo
Key terms: church
Review routing: Automated review
The family-like bond of shared life in Christ; low ambiguity risk.
