Doctrine Analysis

2 Peter — Full Doctrine Analysis (Ndebele)

This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 for the 2 Peter curriculum in Ndebele. It extends the Romans Language Package doctrine framework and is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (2 Peter, Ndebele) — same 14 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. It provides the chapter-by-chapter doctrinal walkthrough (full-book coverage, chapters 1–3) required by the PRD, with the core passage (1:16–21) treated as the theological anchor rather than the scope boundary.

Baseline doctrines carried over from the Romans package (Sovereignty of God, Christ as Sole Mediator, Grace, Justification by Faith, Lordship of Christ, Sonship of Christ, Resurrection, Incarnation, Sin, God’s Calling and Election, Obedience of Faith, Authority of Scripture, Sanctification, Christian Identity in Christ, The Kingdom of God, Fellowship of Believers, Christian Encouragement, etc.) remain in force wherever their key terms recur in 2 Peter (see 08_core_glossary.md, Section A) and are not re-tiered here; this document tiers only the doctrines newly named or substantially re-shaped by 2 Peter’s own argument, matching doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly.

1. Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrinal Walkthrough

Chapter 1 (1:1–21)

Doctrinal content: Salvation through Christ the Savior (1:1); Growing in Christian Virtue (1:3–9); God’s Calling and Election (1:10); Certainty of Christ’s Return (1:11, 16–18); Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption (1:3–4); Sonship of Christ (1:17–18); The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture (1:19–21).

PassageDoctrineRiskTranslation riskReview routing
1:1Salvation through Christ the SaviorCritical”Our God and Savior Jesus Christ” is a single-figure construction; splitting uNkulunkulu and uMsindisi into two referents in Ndebele syntax would erase the deity-of-Christ claim.Human theologian
1:3–4Divine Nature and Escaping CorruptionCriticalimvelo yobuNkulunkulu / abahlanganyeli must read as relational-moral transformation through union with Christ, not literal spirit-incorporation (ukuthwasa-adjacent categories).Human theologian
1:5–9Growing in Christian VirtueHighisimilo esihle (aretē) must stay distinct from ukulunga (forensic righteousness) so virtue-growth teaching does not collapse justification into moral achievement; ukwesaba uNkulunkulu (eusebeia) must denote reverent devotion to the true God, not generic piety or fear of ancestral displeasure.Human theologian
1:10God’s Calling and ElectionHigh”Confirm your calling and election” must not read as strengthening a fate through ritual consultation, nor as human action grounding God’s prior sovereign choice.Human theologian
1:11The Kingdom of God (baseline) / Certainty of Christ’s ReturnMedium (baseline) / Critical”Eternal kingdom” reinforces umbuso kaNkulunkulu ophakade; entry language must not be read as a territorial inheritance echoing the historical Ndebele kingdom.Native speaker / theologian
1:12–15Reliability of Scripture (apostolic testimony) / Christian IdentityMediumithente lomzimba (tent = body) must not imply a separate indwelling spirit distinct from the person.Native speaker
1:16–18Sonship of Christ; Certainty of Christ’s ReturnCriticalPeter’s eyewitness claim of the Transfiguration; ofakazi ababonayo must denote verified firsthand observation, not a vision/trance experience; the Father’s ilizwi (voice) must be unambiguously God’s own spoken address, never a spirit’s utterance heard by a diviner.Human theologian
1:19–21The Reliability and Inspiration of ScriptureCriticalCore-passage anchor. ukuqhutshwa (nguMoya oNgcwele) for “carried along” is the single highest-priority forbidden-substitution term in the book — must never draw on spirit-possession/mediumship (ukuthwasa) vocabulary. umBhalo oNgcwele must retain unique divine authorship distinct from oral tradition, izaga, or ancestral pronouncements.Human theologian

Chapter 1 summary: Every major doctrine in the registry except “False Teachers,” “Day of the Lord,” “Patience of God’s Timing,” “Lordship and Redemptive Ownership,” “Hope of New Creation,” and “Sovereignty over Creation” is introduced or anchored here — chapter 1 is the doctrinal hinge of the book and carries the highest concentration of Critical-tier material.

Chapter 2 (2:1–22)

Doctrinal content: False Teachers and Their Judgment (2:1–22, dominant); Lordship and Redemptive Ownership of Christ (2:1); Day of the Lord and Final Judgment (2:3–9, in seed form via historical judgment examples); Sin (baseline, 2:14).

PassageDoctrineRiskTranslation riskReview routing
2:1False Teachers and Their Judgment; Lordship and Redemptive Ownership of ChristCritical / Highabafundisi bamanga names an internal-church threat and must never be blended with isangoma/inyanga vocabulary (which would wrongly externalize the threat) nor softened to “mistaken teachers.” uMninimandls (despotēs) and ukuthengwa (redemptive purchase) must reinforce, not diminish, Christ’s established lordship and must not read as ordinary commerce or ritual payment to secure ancestral favor.Human theologian
2:2–3False Teachers and Their JudgmentCriticalamanyala (sensuality) and exploitative “made-up words” must be read as moral corruption from within the community of faith.Human theologian
2:4–9Day of the Lord and Final Judgment (historical precedent: judged angels, the Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah; rescue of Noah and Lot)Criticalukuphoselwa endaweni yokujeziswa (Tartarus) must avoid both Greek-mythological substitution and any ancestral-spirit-realm connotation; ukukhulula (rescue) must be God’s own deliverance, not ancestral protection.Human theologian
2:10–16False Teachers and Their JudgmentHighabaqholo abazithembayo, abalawuli abakhazimulayo (glorious ones/angelic beings) must be read as angelic authorities, never amadlozi.Human theologian
2:17–19False Teachers and Their Judgment; Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption (inverse: enslavement to corruption)Criticalisigqila sokubola (slave of corruption) is the deliberate photo-negative of imvelo yobuNkulunkulu (1:4); the contrast must be visible in the rendering.Human theologian
2:20–22False Teachers and Their Judgment; Sanctification (baseline, inverted)CriticalRelapse imagery (ukubuyela emuva) must not be read as ritual re-defilement requiring ancestral cleansing, but as a moral-spiritual regression from a Christian profession.Human theologian

Chapter 2 summary: The chapter is dominated by one Critical doctrine (False Teachers and Their Judgment) sustained across 22 verses, reinforced by the High-tier Lordship/Redemptive Ownership doctrine at its opening verse and previewing the Critical Day-of-Judgment doctrine developed fully in chapter 3.

Chapter 3 (3:1–18)

Doctrinal content: Certainty of Christ’s Return (3:1–4, 10); Day of the Lord and Final Judgment (3:7, 10–12); Patience of God’s Timing (3:8–9, 15); Hope of New Creation (3:13); Sovereignty of God over Creation (3:4–7); Reliability of Scripture (3:2, 15–16, re: Paul’s letters); Growing in Christian Virtue / Diligence and Steadfastness (3:14, 17–18).

3:1–2The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture (baseline apostolic/prophetic authority)CriticalReasserts umphrofethi / umphostoli distinctions already established; no new lexical risk but doctrinal continuity must be preserved.Human theologian
3:3–4Certainty of Christ’s ReturnCriticalizideleli (scoffers) deny ukubuya kweNkosi; must not be softened into mere skeptics but preserved as those denying a specific, certain future event.Human theologian
3:5–7Sovereignty of God over Creation; Day of the Lord and Final JudgmentMedium / Criticalindalo and izakhi zendalo must be shown as God’s own handiwork under judgment, not a realm animated by resident nature-spirits (rain-spirits, mountain/river spirits — a live category in Ndebele cosmology).Native speaker (creation) / theologian (judgment)
3:8–9Patience of God’s TimingCriticalukubekezela must be purposeful, gracious forbearance giving opportunity for repentance — never fatalistic delay, divine forgetfulness, or passive waiting on a moody ancestor.Human theologian
3:10–12Day of the Lord and Final JudgmentCriticalusuku lweNkosi, umlilo, izakhi zendalo — judgment fire must not be confused with ritual/purification fire; the “thief” simile (isela) is low-risk but must retain suddenness.Human theologian
3:13Hope of New CreationCriticalamazulu amatsha lomhlaba omutsha must be God’s promised renewal under sovereign judgment, distinct from entering an ancestral spirit-world or joining the amadlozi; ukulunga there retains its forensic/relational root.Human theologian
3:14Christian Diligence and SteadfastnessLowStandard exhortation vocabulary (ukukhuthala, ongelasici); low ambiguity risk.Automated review
3:15–16Patience of God’s Timing (Paul’s letters as confirming witness); Reliability of ScriptureCritical / Highukubekezela reaffirmed; ukuphambanisa (to twist/distort Scripture) must locate the danger in human mishandling, not in Scripture’s own reliability.Human theologian
3:17–18Christian Diligence and Steadfastness; Growing in Christian Virtue (closing doxology)Low / Highukukhula (growth) and closing udumo (glory) doxology; standard, low-risk closing benediction language reusing baseline terms.Automated review / native speaker

Chapter 3 summary: Chapter 3 carries the heaviest concentration of Critical doctrines outside chapter 1 — Certainty of Christ’s Return, Day of the Lord, Patience of God’s Timing, and Hope of New Creation are all fully developed here, while the closing verses (3:14, 17–18) return to low-risk, standard exhortation vocabulary, explicitly reviewed and confirmed to introduce no new doctrinal risk.

3. Full-Book Coverage Confirmation

ChapterVersesNew/primary doctrines activeCoverage status
11:1–21Salvation through Christ the Savior; Growing in Christian Virtue; God’s Calling and Election; Certainty of Christ’s Return; Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption; Sonship of Christ; Reliability and Inspiration of ScriptureReviewed — highest doctrinal density in the book (core passage 1:16–21 anchors two Critical doctrines simultaneously)
22:1–22False Teachers and Their Judgment; Lordship and Redemptive Ownership of Christ; Day of the Lord and Final Judgment (historical precedent)Reviewed — single sustained Critical doctrine plus supporting High-tier doctrine
33:1–18Certainty of Christ’s Return; Day of the Lord and Final Judgment; Patience of God’s Timing; Hope of New Creation; Sovereignty of God over Creation; Reliability of Scripture (Paul’s letters); Christian Diligence and SteadfastnessReviewed — four Critical doctrines fully developed; closing verses (3:14, 17–18) explicitly reviewed and confirmed low-risk, standard exhortation content, introducing no new doctrinal risk

No chapter, section, or doctrine in 2 Peter is silently omitted. All 14 doctrines in doctrine_risk_registry.json are represented above with supporting passages drawn from across the full book (chapters 1–3), and every chapter’s contribution has been explicitly noted, including passages of low doctrinal density (e.g., 1:12–15’s travel/testament remarks; 3:14 and 3:17–18’s closing exhortations).

4. Cross-Cutting Observations for Phase 2 Handoff

  1. Two mediated-access collision points, not one. The Romans baseline’s single dominant risk (uNkulunkulu approached via amadlozi) is joined in 2 Peter by a second, equally severe collision: the Holy Spirit’s inspiration of Scripture and the language of “partaking of the divine nature” both sit directly on top of Ndebele spirit-possession/mediumship (ukuthwasa) categories. These two collision points (1:4 and 1:21) should receive the tightest forbidden-substitution enforcement in Phase 2.
  2. Internal vs. external threat distinction. Unlike Romans’ izangoma/izinyanga (openly traditional-religious figures), 2 Peter’s false teachers claim Christian legitimacy from within the church. Translators must resist any drift toward vocabulary that would relocate this threat outside the believing community.
  3. iNkosi’s royal/chieftaincy shadow recurs at scale. “Day of the Lord” (usuku lweNkosi) and “Master/Sovereign Owner” (uMninimandla) both build on the already-Critical iNkosi term; this book multiplies rather than dilutes that baseline risk and should be tracked as a single connected enforcement thread across all three chapters.
  4. Patience of God’s Timing is a genuinely new Critical doctrine not present in the Romans package; it requires its own dedicated forbidden-substitution entry (ukubekezela) distinct from, though related to, the baseline’s ukunakekela kukaNkulunkulu (providence).

This document is consistent with, and must be read alongside, translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, and 08_core_glossary.md for the 2 Peter Ndebele curriculum. It supersedes no baseline Romans doctrine tier and introduces no doctrine or risk tier not already present in doctrine_risk_registry.json.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture

Ndebele name: Ukwethembeka Lokuphefumulelwa koMbhalo oNgcwele
Key terms: scripture, prophetic_word, carried_along, more_sure, own_interpretation, myths, eyewitnesses, will_of_man
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: the single most sensitive doctrine in the book for a Ndebele audience. Peter’s description of the prophets ‘carried along’ by the Holy Spirit (1:21) sits directly on top of the Ndebele cultural category of a person being ‘carried’ or ‘ridden’ by an ancestral spirit (idlozi) during trance-possession (ukuthwasa); the rendering ukuqhutshwa (not any spirit-possession verb) must be used at every occurrence. umBhalo oNgcwele must also retain unique divine authorship distinct from oral tradition, izaga (proverbs), or ancestral pronouncements.

Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption

Ndebele name: Imvelo yobuNkulunkulu Lokuphepha Ukubola
Key terms: divine_nature, partakers, divine_power, corruption, evil_desire
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: imvelo yobuNkulunkulu (‘partaking of the divine nature’) is the highest-risk phrase in the book. Traditional religion has robust categories for a living person acquiring an ancestral spirit’s power or identity through mediumship, inheritance of a spirit, or ritual incorporation into the amadlozi. This doctrine must be taught unambiguously as relational, moral transformation through union with Christ by faith, never as literal absorption into or possession by a divine or spiritual being.

False Teachers and Their Judgment

Ndebele name: Abafundisi Bamanga Lokwahlulelwa Kwabo
Key terms: false_teachers, false_prophets, destructive_heresies, defilement, master_sovereign_owner, bought_redeemed, cast_into_tartarus
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: these figures claim Christian legitimacy from inside the church, unlike the openly traditional-religious izangoma/izinyanga flagged in the Romans registry. abafundisi bamanga and abaphrofethi bamanga must never be blended with isangoma/inyanga vocabulary (which would wrongly relocate the threat outside the church) and must never be softened to ‘mistaken teachers,’ or the chapter’s warning against internal corruption of the church is lost.

The Certainty of Christ’s Return

Ndebele name: Ukuqiniseka kokuBuya kweNkosi uJesu Kristu
Key terms: coming_of_christ, morning_star, scoffers, eyewitnesses
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: parousia (ukubuya) must denote an unambiguous future, personal, bodily/visible return, never a vague ‘presence,’ and must never be assimilated to an ancestral spirit’s ritual manifestation. Ikhwezi (morning star) carries rich pre-Christian Nguni cultural and personal-name significance and must be explicitly anchored to Christ (cf. Revelation 22:16) rather than left as a free-floating astral symbol.

The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment

Ndebele name: Usuku lweNkosi Lokwahlulela Okuphelele
Key terms: day_of_the_lord, day_of_judgment, fire_of_judgment, elements, dissolve_destroy, thief, judgment_condemnation
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: usuku lweNkosi builds directly on iNkosi, already flagged Critical in the baseline Romans registry for exceeding chieftaincy/royal connotations; that correction must be maintained here. Judgment fire (umlilo) must not be confused with ritual or purification fire used in traditional practice, and the cosmic elements (izakhi zendalo) must not be read as inhabited by nature-spirits.

Patience of God’s Timing

Ndebele name: Ukubekezela kukaNkulunkulu Ngesikhathi Sakhe
Key terms: patience_of_god, delay_of_promise
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ukubekezela must be taught as God’s purposeful, gracious forbearance giving opportunity for repentance, never as impersonal fate-delay, divine forgetfulness, or the kind of passive waiting expected of a supplicant hoping an ancestor’s mood will change in their favor.

Sonship of Christ

Ndebele name: Ubudodana bukaKristu
Key terms: son_of_god, father, beloved, voice, majesty, honor
Review routing: Human theologian

Reuses the baseline Critical doctrine. The Father’s audible voice from the Majestic Glory declaring Christ his beloved Son must be rendered so it cannot be mistaken for a spirit’s utterance heard by a diviner in trance; ilizwi (voice) must be unambiguously God’s own spoken address, not a mediumistic phenomenon.

Salvation through Christ the Savior

Ndebele name: Usindiso ngoKristu uMsindisi
Key terms: salvation, savior, christ
Review routing: Human theologian

The Granville-Sharp construction ‘our God and Savior Jesus Christ’ (1:1) names Jesus directly as both uNkulunkulu and uMsindisi; the Ndebele rendering must not split this into two separate figures, which would undercut the deity of Christ central to this curriculum. usindiso must not be reduced to physical rescue sought through ancestral appeasement.

Hope of New Creation

Ndebele name: Ithemba loMhlaba Omutsha Lamazulu Amatsha
Key terms: new_heavens_new_earth, righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian

amazulu amatsha lomhlaba omutsha must be taught as God’s own promised renewal of creation under his sovereign judgment, distinct from any traditional notion of the deceased entering an ancestral spirit-world or joining the amadlozi; ukulunga (‘righteousness dwells’ there) must retain its established forensic/relational root.

High Risk Doctrines

Growing in Christian Virtue

Ndebele name: Ukukhula Kwesimilo sobuKristu
Key terms: virtue, knowledge, self_control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly_kindness, love, full_knowledge
Review routing: Human theologian

isimilo esihle (aretē) must be kept distinct from ukulunga (forensic righteousness) so this growth-in-virtue teaching does not collapse justification into moral achievement; ukwesaba uNkulunkulu (eusebeia) must denote reverent devotion to the true God through Christ, not generic religious piety or fear of ancestral displeasure that motivates ritual observance in traditional practice.

Lordship and Redemptive Ownership of Christ

Ndebele name: Ubukhosi Lobunini bukaKristu Ngokuhlengwa
Key terms: lord, master_sovereign_owner, bought_redeemed
Review routing: Human theologian

uMninimandla (despotēs) reinforces, and must not diminish, iNkosi’s already-established exceeding of royal/chieftaincy connotations; ukuthengwa (redemptive purchase) must not be read as ordinary commerce or as a ritual payment made to secure ancestral favor.

God’s Calling and Election

Ndebele name: Ukubizwa Lokukhethwa nguNkulunkulu
Key terms: calling, election, confirmed_calling
Review routing: Human theologian

Reuses the baseline High doctrine. ‘Confirming your calling and election’ must convey a sovereign, God-secured summons that believers diligently live out, not a fate or destiny that could be strengthened through ritual ancestral consultation, and the confirming action must not be read as the ground of God’s own sovereign choice.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Sovereignty of God over Creation

Ndebele name: Ubukhulu bukaNkulunkulu Phezu kweNdalo
Key terms: creation, elements, heaven
Review routing: Native speaker review

indalo and izakhi zendalo must be shown as God’s own direct handiwork under his judgment, not a realm animated or governed by resident nature-spirits, a live category in traditional Ndebele cosmology (e.g. rain-spirits, territorial spirits associated with mountains and rivers).

Low Risk Doctrines

Christian Diligence and Steadfastness

Ndebele name: Ukukhuthala Lokuqina KwamaKristu
Key terms: diligent, steadfastness, grow
Review routing: Automated review

Standard, low-ambiguity exhortation language consistent with established Nguni Bible vocabulary; low risk of syncretistic misreading.
