This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning Revelation chapters 1–22. Terms marked REUSED are fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and must be reproduced exactly, unchanged. Terms marked NEW are Revelation-specific additions proposed for this curriculum’s translation memory extension in Phase 2. Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions.

D. Notes for Phase 2 Translation Memory Extension
- All entries in Section A must be inserted into the Revelation-specific
translation_memory.jsonextension unchanged from the Romans baseline; no re-derivation permitted. - All entries in Section B are proposed new canonical renderings for Revelation and should be reviewed and ratified by a human theologian before Phase 2 segment translation begins, per the escalation rules in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Three lexical collisions require the highest level of translator vigilance across the whole curriculum, each meriting a dedicated standing translator note in the Phase 2 system prompt:
- isilo (beast) vs. the historical Zulu/Ndebele royal praise-title “iSilo.”
- iNkosi yamakhosi (King of Kings/Lord of Lords) vs. the historical Ndebele royal title “iNkosi,” already flagged Critical in the baseline.
- abathakathi (sorcerers, Rev 21:8, 22:15) — a live, socially dangerous accusation-term in contemporary Zimbabwean society, requiring pastoral framing alongside doctrinal accuracy.
- The doctrine of Christ as Sole Mediator (baseline Critical doctrine) receives its fullest New Testament reinforcement in Revelation through: intercession/incense (ch. 8), the accuser-vs.-intercessor contrast (ch. 12), the tabernacling presence of God (ch. 21:3), and the beatific vision “they will see his face” (ch. 22:4). These four passages should be cross-referenced together in Phase 2 doctrine teaching notes.
This glossary should be read alongside analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md for full contextual and verse-level justification of every entry. It extends, and does not contradict, the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: uNkulunkulu
Transliteration: uNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sovereignty of God
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The established Nguni term for the Supreme Being; the doctrinal risk is its traditional theological framing as remote, reached through amadlozi. Revelation’s throne-room visions (ch. 4-5, 21-22) climax the direct-access theme; cross-reference ‘The Sovereignty of God over History’ and ‘Christ as Sole Mediator (Revelation’s Fulfillment).’
Jesus
Approved rendering: uJesu
Transliteration: uJesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Standard established transliteration. In Revelation, the object of persevering testimony (1:9; 12:17; 19:10; 20:4) and of the church’s eschatological longing (22:20, ‘Woza, Nkosi Jesu’); cross-reference ‘The Return and Reign of Jesus Christ.‘
Lord
Approved rendering: iNkosi
Transliteration: iNkosi
Doctrine: Lordship of Jesus Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Must convey exclusive, supreme lordship exceeding the historical Ndebele royal title. Reaches its climactic form in Revelation as ‘iNkosi yamakhosi’ (19:16); cross-reference ‘The Return and Reign of Jesus Christ.‘
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: uMoya oNgcwele
Transliteration: uMoya oNgcwele
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifting
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον / τὰ ἑπτὰ πνεύματα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Must never be conflated with amadlozi or a plurality of possessing spirits; Revelation’s ‘seven spirits’ (1:4; 4:5; 5:6) symbolize the one Spirit’s fullness before God’s throne, not seven separate spirits.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: umbuso kaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: umbuso kaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ / τοῦ κόσμου … τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package; risk ESCALATED from baseline Medium to Critical for Revelation. At 11:15 this doctrine reaches totalizing force (‘the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord’); must not evoke nostalgia for the historic Ndebele kingdom under Mzilikazi/Lobengula — God’s reign displaces, not merely joins, every earthly power.
Salvation
Approved rendering: usindiso
Transliteration: usindiso
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs at 7:10, 12:10, 19:1 in worship refrains; must not be reduced to deliverance from persecution alone but taught as eternal reconciliation with God.
Grace
Approved rendering: umusa
Transliteration: umusa
Doctrine: Grace
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; risk aligned to Critical per Revelation registry. Bookends the whole letter (1:4; 22:21); the ‘water of life without payment’ (21:6; 22:17) is this same grace-gift extended to its final eschatological scope.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ukulunga
Transliteration: ukulunga
Doctrine: Righteousness of God
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. At 19:8 (‘the righteous deeds of the saints’) and 22:11, must be read as the fruit of grace, not merit accumulated toward entry into the new Jerusalem.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ukuvuka kwabafileyo
Transliteration: ukuvuka kwabafileyo
Doctrine: Resurrection of Jesus Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Central to Rev ch. 20 (the first resurrection); must not be conflated with a deceased person joining the amadlozi.
Intercession
Approved rendering: ukuncengela
Transliteration: ukuncengela
Doctrine: Prayer
Original: implied via θυμιάματα … αἱ προσευχαὶ τῶν ἁγίων (8:3-4); contrasted with ὁ κατήγορος (12:10)
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reinforces the Christ-as-sole-mediator doctrine: the saints’ prayers ascend directly to God (8:3-4), contrasted with Satan’s role as accuser (12:10-11). CRITICAL: teach explicitly that no ancestral intermediary is needed.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: iNdodana kaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs at 2:18 (address to Thyatira); must be taught as unique, co-equal deity, not an ancestor or spirit-being; cross-reference ‘The Deity and Eternality of Christ.‘
Alpha And Omega
Approved rendering: u-Alfa lo-Omega, ukuqala lokuphela
Transliteration: u-Alfa lo-Omega
Doctrine: The Deity and Eternality of Christ
Original: τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ
Category: God
NEW. Transliterate the Greek letter-names and ALWAYS pair with ‘ukuqala lokuphela’ (the beginning and the end), since the letters alone carry no meaning in Ndebele. Applied to God (1:8) and Christ (22:13), affirming Christ’s full deity.
Hades
Approved rendering: iHayidesi
Transliteration: iHayidesi
Doctrine: Eternal Punishment and the Second Death
Rejected alternatives: kwelabaphansi
Original: ᾅδης
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Transliteration deliberately avoids ‘kwelabaphansi’ (the ancestral underworld/amadlozi realm). Christ alone ‘holds the keys of Death and Hades’ (1:18) — not ritual specialists or ancestral mediators.
Satan
Approved rendering: uSathane
Transliteration: uSathane
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: Σατανᾶς
Category: Evil/Judgment
NEW. Standard transliteration. Must be taught as a personal created being in defeated rebellion, never conflated with amadlozi or treated as a spirit category ritual specialists might negotiate with or appease.
Devil
Approved rendering: udiyabholi
Transliteration: udiyabholi
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: διάβολος
Category: Evil/Judgment
NEW. Same referent as uSathane (12:9; 20:2); teach the two Ndebele terms as naming one and the same defeated enemy.
Second Death
Approved rendering: ukufa kwesibili
Transliteration: ukufa kwesibili
Doctrine: Eternal Punishment and the Second Death
Original: ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος
Category: Judgment
NEW. Eternal separation from God distinct from ordinary physical death (2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8). Must never be softened into a metaphor for social disgrace.
Book Of Life
Approved rendering: incwadi yokuphila
Transliteration: incwadi yokuphila
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: ἡ βίβλος τῆς ζωῆς
Category: Judgment
NEW. God’s own sovereign record established before creation (17:8; also 3:5, 13:8, 20:12,15, 21:27), on the basis of Christ’s work — not a ledger of merit accumulated through good deeds or ritual correctness.
Lamb
Approved rendering: iWundlu
Transliteration: iWundlu
Doctrine: Worship of the Lamb
Original: ἀρνίον
Category: Christology
NEW. THE central christological/worship title of the book (~28 occurrences). Must always be marked as a title for Christ alone; worship of the Lamb must be sharply distinguished from animal sacrifice/slaughter offered to appease or honor amadlozi.
Dragon
Approved rendering: idrakoni
Transliteration: idrakoni
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: δράκων
Category: Evil/Judgment

Ancient Serpent
Approved rendering: inyoka endala
Transliteration: inyoka endala
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: ὁ ὄφις ὁ ἀρχαῖος
Category: Evil/Judgment
NEW. Explicit identification of the dragon/Satan with the Genesis 3 serpent (12:9; 20:2). Serpents carry ambivalent spiritual symbolism in Southern African tradition (ancestral messengers, water-spirits); this identification must be unambiguous — a decisively defeated enemy, never a spirit to respect, fear ritually, or negotiate with. Always modify with ‘endala’ and pair explicitly with ‘uSathane.‘
Beast
Approved rendering: isilo
Transliteration: isilo
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: τὸ θηρίον
Category: Evil/Judgment
NEW. THE single most historically loaded lexical collision in the book: ‘isilo’ is the established Bible-translation rendering of ‘beast’ AND the historic Zulu/Ndebele royal praise-title (iSilo, used of kings such as Mzilikazi and Lobengula). Retain the established rendering (per Bible-tradition precedent) but mandate a disambiguation footnote at EVERY occurrence (ch. 11,13,14,15-17,19-20): this names a horrifying creature representing evil, never a royal honorific, and no living or historical ruler may be casually identified with it.
Mark Of The Beast
Approved rendering: uphawu lwesilo
Transliteration: uphawu lwesilo
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: τὸ χάραγμα τοῦ θηρίου
Category: Evil/Judgment
NEW. A visible mark of allegiance to the beast’s system (13:16-17). Must be kept lexically distinguishable from ‘uphawu lukaNkulunkulu’ (the seal of God) despite sharing the base noun ‘uphawu’ — the contrast is a central teaching point, not incidental.
Word Of God Title
Approved rendering: iLizwi likaNkulunkulu
Transliteration: iLizwi likaNkulunkulu
Doctrine: The Deity and Eternality of Christ
Original: ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ

Approved rendering: iNkosi yamakhosi
Transliteration: iNkosi yamakhosi
Doctrine: The Return and Reign of Jesus Christ
Original: βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίων
Category: Christology
NEW. The climactic superlative title of the returning Christ (19:16) — the superlative, doubled form of ‘iNkosi,’ already Critical in the baseline for its collision with historical Ndebele royal titles. Must be taught as placing Christ above every human king, past or present, including the historic Ndebele monarchy.

Transliteration: ukuvuka kokuqala

Original: καινὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ καινὴν γῆν

Sorcerers
Approved rendering: abathakathi
Transliteration: abathakathi
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: φαρμακοῖς
Category: Judgment
NEW. Practitioners of magical arts/spells who manipulate spiritual power apart from God (9:21 implied; 18:23; 21:8 core-passage occurrence; 22:15). One of the most culturally loaded and socially dangerous terms in Ndebele society — witchcraft accusations carry real-world violent consequences in Zimbabwe. MANDATORY theologian and pastoral-sensitivity review at every occurrence; teaching notes must explicitly forbid application to real-world naming/accusation of specific individuals.
Worship
Approved rendering: ukukhonza
Transliteration: ukukhonza
Doctrine: Worship of the Lamb
Original: προσκυνέω
Category: Worship
