Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis

Several Pashto terms in this Language Package carry a semantic range shaped by Pashtunwali’s tribal and honor-code vocabulary, distinct from the specifically Quranic collisions that dominate Arabic’s risk profile.

Terms narrower than intended, via honor-code association

  • صداقت (righteousness): does not carry an intuitive forensic guilt-innocence sense on its own in everyday Pashto usage; must be paired with honor-restoration framing to land with its full Romans 1:17 weight.
  • فضل (grace): risks being read through the melmastia hospitality code’s reciprocity expectation - a gift that obligates repayment - narrower than Paul’s wholly unmerited, non-reciprocal gift.

Terms broader than English, via customary-institution association

  • منځګړیتوب (intercession): broader and richer than English “intercession” because of its association with Pashtunwali’s nanawatai mediation custom. This broadness is a genuine asset here, unlike Persian’s shafa’at, but the analogy is imperfect (nanawatai still requires the guilty party’s own submission act) and must be calibrated, not treated as an exact equivalent.
  • تړون (covenant): broader than a simple legal “agreement,” carrying the weight of customary tribal treaty-making - an asset for conveying seriousness, but this Language Package must correct the implicit assumption that such pacts are negotiated between equals, unlike the unilaterally-initiated biblical covenant.
  • سوله (peace): broader than a private inner state, carrying the full weight of a war-ending negotiated settlement - a strong asset for Romans 5:1 once the connection to justification is made explicit.

Implication

Where a Pashto term’s semantic range has been shaped by Pashtunwali’s tribal and customary institutions rather than by a competing religious doctrine, the glossary’s notes field (see translation_memory.json) exists specifically to flag whether that association helps or risks the doctrinal sense intended.
