Romans repeatedly makes claims that intersect with two distinct Bodo religious currents in different ways — an indigenous animist tradition and a later Sanskritized reform movement. Naming both explicitly, rather than treating Bodo as a variant of generic Hindu risk reasoning, is part of this curriculum’s job.
| Romans doctrine | Adjacent Bodo-context concept | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| Salvation (फोरायनाय) | No native equivalent in Bathouism; Brahma Dharma imported मोक्ष-style liberation | Salvation must be taught as a new category (reconciliation with a personal God through Christ), not corrected from an existing wrong word, since Bathou ritual life targets this-life protection and prosperity rather than an afterlife destiny. |
| Incarnation (मानसि गुदि सोलायनाय) | Doudini trance-possession during Kherai puja | The incarnation is the eternal Son’s permanent, personal assumption of human nature; the doudini’s trance is a temporary ritual state in which a medium’s own identity recedes, which is the opposite structure. |
| Grace (मोफादांनाय दान) | Reciprocal offerings to Bathoubwrai/Kherai pantheon; Brahma Dharma’s पुण्य merit | Grace is unearned favor given apart from both ritual exchange and accumulated merit — it contradicts both frameworks at once, not just one. |
| Resurrection (जिउनाय सोलायनाय) | फिन जोनोम — rebirth, absorbed into Bodo discourse via Brahma Dharma’s Hindu-influenced teaching | Resurrection is bodily, historical, and once-for-all; it ends the cycle of death rather than continuing a cycle of rebirth. |
| God as personal Father (ईश्वर, आफा) | बाथौबुरै as an aniconic elder-deity within a populated pantheon | The biblical God is not one great elder-spirit among the Kherai pantheon’s many recognized deities and ancestral spirits, but the one Lord over all. |
Why this matters for translation
Each row above requires a different remedy: some (incarnation, resurrection, grace) are about rejecting a nearby wrong concept, while salvation specifically is about building a concept that has no native starting point at all. translation_memory.json and this comparative table exist to keep translators from treating all of these as the same kind of problem.
