Existing Dogri Bible translations

The Bible Society of India has published Scripture portions and a New Testament in Dogri, a relatively recent development that followed Dogri’s 2003 inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This Language Package follows established BSI Dogri renderings where they exist, and otherwise builds outward from Dogri’s own everyday vocabulary rather than borrowing Hindi Christian terms wholesale.

Where existing translations fall short for this curriculum

  • Doctrinal-study vocabulary is thin: because formal Dogri Bible translation work is recent, there is no settled glossary specifically for teaching doctrine (as opposed to translating narrative Scripture text) the way Hindi’s BSI Old Version/New Version tradition provides. This Language Package’s translation_memory.json is a first attempt to fill that gap for this curriculum, and should be reconfirmed against the current BSI Dogri Bible edition before wide deployment.
  • No documented treatment of the mannat vow-economy risk: existing Dogri Christian materials, where they exist, do not systematically flag the specific risk that grace, spiritual gifts, and salvation language could be reheard through the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage’s vow-for-boon transactional logic. This registry names that risk explicitly for the first time in a documented, reusable way.
  • Risk of silent Hindi substitution: because Dogri is under-resourced relative to Hindi, the path of least resistance in ad hoc translation work is to borrow Hindi Christian vocabulary directly. This Language Package deliberately records Dogri-specific alternatives (e.g. खरी खबर rather than सुसमाचार) precisely to resist that drift.

Readiness assessment

Dogri sits between Hindi’s mature translation tradition and Fulfulde’s or Santali’s much thinner one: it has real, recent Bible translation work to build on, but its doctrinal-study vocabulary is considerably less settled, and several terms in translation_memory.json are flagged for confirmation against the current BSI Dogri Bible edition and against native-speaker judgment before wide deployment.
