Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 1 Thessalonians (Greek Destination Language Package)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all five chapters of 1 Thessalonians. Terms already present in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE — reuse exactly]; new terms proposed for this curriculum are marked [NEW — proposed addition]. Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical/High/Medium/Low) and drive Phase 2 review routing exactly as documented in doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Glossary Table

| 8 | Lord | Κύριος | Kýrios | Critical | Lordship of Christ | throughout (1:1,3,6,8; 2:15,19; 3:8,11,12,13; 4:1,2,6,15,16,17; 5:2,9,12,23,27,28) | BASELINE | Never let it register as “Mister”; anchor to Septuagint YHWH background, especially at 4:15-17 and 5:2 (Day of the Lord). |

| 12 | glory | δόξα | dóxa | Medium | Deity of Christ / God | 2:12,20 | BASELINE | Guard against “fame/acclaim” secular sense. |
| 13 | election | εκλογή | eklogí | High | Effectual Calling | 1:4 | BASELINE | Guard against “political election/voting” secular sense. |
| 14 | Holy Spirit | Άγιο Πνεύμα | Ágio Pnévma | Critical | Sanctification / God | 1:5,6; 4:8; 5:19 | BASELINE | Third Person of the Trinity; “do not quench the Spirit” (5:19) is a new context requiring care — see #46. |
| 15 | Father | Πατέρας | Patéras | Critical | Adoption into God’s Family / God | 1:1,3; 3:11,13 | BASELINE | God as personal Father; stable. |

| 20 | peace | ειρήνη | eiríni | Medium | Peace with God | 1:1; 5:3,23 | BASELINE | Distinguish from Hesychast contemplative-stillness sense. |
| 21 | salvation | σωτηρία | sotiría | Critical | Salvation | 5:8,9 | BASELINE | Zero-gap NT word; guard against theosis-only reframing — armor-of-hope image at 5:8. |
| 22 | exhort / comfort | προτρέπω (default) / παρηγορείτε or ενθαρρύνετε (4:18 exception) | protrépo / parigoreíte / entharrýnete | Medium-High | Mutual Edification / Hope in Grief | 4:18; (general παρακαλέω occurrences) | BASELINE with documented exception | Baseline default προτρέπω fits exhortation-to-duty contexts; 4:18’s grief-comfort register requires the exception — see semantic analysis Part A, v.18. Flag every 4:18 occurrence for consistency review. |
| 23 | mutual edification / build up | οικοδομή / οικοδομεῖτε | oikodomí / oikodomeíte | Low | Mutual Edification | 5:11 | BASELINE | No significant risk. |
| 24 | boast | καυχώμαι | kavchóme | Low | Salvation | 2:19 (“crown of boasting”) | BASELINE | Living idiom in church register. |
| 25 | prophecy | προφητεία | profiteía | Low | Fulfillment of Prophecy / Inspiration of Scripture | 5:20 | BASELINE | Stable, unambiguous. |
| 26 | hope | ελπίδα | elpída | Medium | Hope in Grief | 1:3; 4:13 | NEW | Anchor to certain expectation grounded in Christ’s resurrection, not everyday probabilistic “hoping.” Also a common Greek given name — culturally warm, zero lexical gap. |
| 27 | parousia / coming (of Christ) | παρουσία | parousía | CRITICAL | The Return of Christ | 2:19; 3:13; 4:15; 5:23 | NEW | HIGHEST PRIORITY NEW TERM. Modern secular sense = “attendance/presence” (school/work records); Orthodox liturgical asset = fixed phrase “Δευτέρα Παρουσία” (Second Coming, Last Judgment iconography). Mandatory translator note every occurrence; must invoke the liturgical compound’s register without importing excess judgment-emphasis into 1 Thess 4’s comfort context. |
| 28 | meeting (the Lord) | (εἰς) ἀπάντησιν (τοῦ Κυρίου) | apántisin (tou Kyríou) | CRITICAL | The Return of Christ / Resurrection of Believers | 4:17 | NEW | Modern secular sense = “answer/reply” — near-total bleaching of the original technical sense (civic delegation formally welcoming an arriving dignitary). Retain in direct Scripture quotation for liturgical continuity; mandatory explanatory note in all surrounding prose; consider προϋπαντώ-based paraphrase in explanatory (non-quotation) text. |
| 29 | caught up | αρπαγησόμεθα (fut. pass. of αρπάζω) | arpagisómetha (arpázo) | High | The Return of Christ / Resurrection of Believers | 4:17 | NEW | Modern dominant senses = grab/snatch/kidnap/rob (αρπαγή = “abduction/robbery” in crime reporting). Risk of a hostile-seizure misreading of a joyful, divinely-initiated event. Mandatory translator note; lean on passive voice and surrounding glorious imagery (clouds, meeting, “always with the Lord”). |
| 30 | fallen asleep (death) | κεκοιμημένοι / κοιμηθέντες | kekoimiméni / koimithéntes | Low | Resurrection of Believers / Hope in Grief | 4:13,14,15 | NEW, asset | Modern Greek preserves this euphemism directly and productively (κοιμητήριο = cemetery; “εκοιμήθη” = standard obituary language). No gloss required. |
| 31 | shout of command | κέλευσμα | kéleusma | Medium | The Return of Christ | 4:16 | NEW | Rare in ordinary modern speech but preserved in Divine Liturgy register (“Κέλευσον, Δέσποτα” — the deacon’s command to the celebrant), a genuine liturgical asset to invoke in teaching. |
| 32 | archangel | αρχάγγελος | archángelos | Low | The Return of Christ | 4:16 | NEW, asset | Reinforced by Orthodox devotion to the Archangels (Ταξιάρχες), Feast of the Archangels (Nov. 8). No drift risk. |
| 33 | trumpet (of God) | σάλπιγγα (Θεού) | sálpinga (Theoú) | Low | The Return of Christ / The Day of the Lord | 4:16 | NEW, asset | Reinforced by Last Judgment iconography (“η σάλπιγγα της Δευτέρας Παρουσίας”). No drift risk. |
| 34 | dead in Christ | νεκροί εν Χριστώ | nekroí en Christó | Critical | Resurrection of Believers / Christian Identity in Christ | 4:16 | NEW; uses BASELINE εν Χριστώ concept | ”In Christ” must retain its union-with-Christ force, not merely “Christian” as a generic label. |
| 35 | clouds | νεφέλες | nefélai/nefeles | Low | The Return of Christ | 4:17 | NEW, asset | Theophany/Ascension association (Acts 1:9) directly accessible to Greek reader. |
| 36 | always with the Lord | πάντοτε σύν Κυρίω | pántote sýn Kyrío | Low-Medium | Hope in Grief / Resurrection of Believers | 4:17 | NEW; uses BASELINE Κύριος | The passage’s pastoral climax; render with warmth per baseline Romans 8/12 tone guidance. |
| 37 | full assurance | πληροφορία → recommend πλήρη βεβαιότητα | plirophoría → plíri vevaiótita | High | Gospel / Faith | 1:5 | NEW | Modern secular sense = “information/data” (news bulletin sense) — anchor with “full certainty/conviction” phrasing rather than πληροφορία alone. |
| 38 | boldness | παρρησία | parrisía | Medium | Gospel / Christ-Centered Ministry | 2:2 | NEW | Modern secondary sense risks impertinence/audacity connotation; anchor to Spirit-given gospel confidence. |
| 39 | idols | είδωλα | eídola | Low | Sanctification / Universal Human Accountability | 1:9 | NEW | Stable; culturally distant but no drift risk; needs historical framing for full impact. |
| 40 | wrath | οργή | orgí | Medium | The Day of the Lord | 1:10; 5:9 | NEW | Guard against reduction to human emotional anger; this is righteous divine judgment. |
| 41 | Satan | Σατανάς | Satanás | Low | Sin | 2:18 | NEW | Universally stable; real personal adversary, not metaphor. |
| 42 | affliction / tribulation | θλίψη | thlípsi | Low-Medium | Sanctification / Hope in Grief | 1:6; 3:3,4,7 | NEW | Fully alive word; ensure the specifically persecution-for-faith sense is not diluted to generic “hardship.” |
| 43 | tempter | πειραστής | peirastís | Low | Sin | 3:5 | NEW | Reinforced by Lord’s Prayer petition; stable personal-adversary sense. |
| 44 | crown (of boasting) | στέφανος | stéfanos | Medium | Christ-Centered Ministry | 2:19 | NEW | Distinguish from the Orthodox wedding-crown (στεφάνωμα) association; this is a victor’s/honorary wreath, not bridal imagery. |
| 45 | holiness (abstract quality) | αγιωσύνη | agiosýni | Medium | Sanctification | 3:13 | NEW | Distinct from αγιασμός (process); names the resulting consecrated character/state. |
| 46 | sexual immorality | πορνεία | porneía | High | Sanctification | 4:3 | NEW | Modern narrowing to commercial prostitution specifically risks under-scoping Paul’s broader prohibition; explanatory broadening required. |
| 47 | lust / desire | επιθυμία | epithymía | Medium | Sanctification / Sin | 4:5 | NEW | Modern default sense is neutral/positive (“wish”); needs “passion of lust” qualifier to retain NT’s negative charge at 4:5. |
| 48 | brotherly love | φιλαδελφία | filadelfía | Low | Christian Fellowship | 4:9 | NEW | Zero-gap, fully stable. |
| 49 | love | αγάπη | agápi | Low | Faith Working through Love / Christian Fellowship | 1:3; 3:6,12 | NEW | Zero-gap, fully stable; also a common given name. |
| 50 | times and seasons | χρόνοι και καιροί | chrónoi kai kairoí | Medium | The Day of the Lord | 5:1 | NEW | Greek uniquely retains χρόνος/καιρός distinction — asset for teaching “not a calendar date but a decisive moment.” |
| 51 | Day of the Lord | ημέρα Κυρίου | iméra Kyríou | High | The Day of the Lord | 5:2 | NEW; uses BASELINE Κύριος | Risk of confusion with unrelated Κυριακή (“Sunday,” ordinary weekly use); mandatory disambiguating note; sustain Κυρίου’s judgment-force against a merely calendrical reading. |
| 52 | thief (metaphor) | κλέφτης | kléftis | Low | The Day of the Lord | 5:2,4 | NEW | Stable; keep metaphor’s point (unpredictability) clear, not a comment on Christ’s character. |
| 53 | peace and security | ειρήνη και ασφάλεια | eiríni kai asfáleia | Low-Medium | The Day of the Lord | 5:3 | NEW; ειρήνη BASELINE | ασφάλεια carries a modern commercial-insurance connotation; the false-confidence point still lands in context but merits a brief note. |
| 54 | birth pains | ωδίνες | odínes | Low | The Day of the Lord | 5:3 | NEW, asset | Standard, fully alive obstetric term (“ωδίνες τοκετού”); metaphor transfers with full force. |
| 55 | sons of light / darkness | υιοί φωτός / υιοί σκότους | yioí fotós / yioí skótous | Low-Medium | The Day of the Lord | 5:5 | NEW | Ethical-identity dualism; guard against importing a Gnostic-sounding metaphysical dualism — Paul’s use is ethical, not cosmological. |
| 56 | watchful / sober | γρηγορώ / νήφω | grigoró / nífo | Low | Sanctification / The Day of the Lord | 5:6 | NEW, asset | Reinforced by the personal name Γρηγόριος (“Gregory”) and the living adjective νηφάλιος (“sober”). |
| 57 | breastplate / helmet | θώρακας / περικεφαλαία | thórakas / perikefalaía | Medium | Salvation / Hope in Grief | 5:8 | NEW | θώρακας now primarily anatomical/medical (“thorax”) in Modern Greek, risking loss of the armor image; περικεφαλαία is elevated/literary rather than the everyday κράνος — a deliberate stylistic choice to flag, not an error. |
| 58 | quench (the Spirit) | σβήνω / μη σβήνετε | svíno / mi svínete | Medium | Sanctification | 5:19 | NEW; uses BASELINE Άγιο Πνεύμα | Modern default sense is mundane appliance/light-switch “turning off”; the fire-of-the-Spirit register (cf. Acts 2) must be actively reactivated in context. |
| 59 | test / examine | δοκιμάζω | dokimázo | Low | Sanctification | 5:21 | NEW | Stable, common word; no drift risk. |
| 60 | spirit, soul, body | πνεύμα, ψυχή, σώμα | pnévma, psychí, sóma | Medium | Sanctification | 5:23 | NEW | Conceptual risk parallel to baseline’s flesh/spirit caution: guard against importing a rigid philosophical trichotomy the text may not be pressing as systematic doctrine. |
Risk Tier Summary for This Curriculum
| Tier | Count (new terms) | Count (baseline reused) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Critical | 3 new (παρουσία, ἀπάντησις, νεκροί εν Χριστώ) | 9 reused (grace, church-adjacent saints, calling, Lord, Son of God, resurrection, Holy Spirit, Father, salvation) | All require human theologian review on every occurrence per baseline escalation rules. |
| High | 5 new (πληροφορία, πορνεία, ημέρα Κυρίου, αρπάζω, and the παρακαλέω/4:18 exception) | 4 reused (gospel, faith, election, sanctification) | Human theologian review required. |
| Medium | ~14 new | 6 reused | Native speaker review recommended; several (κέλευσμα, στέφανος, θώρακας/περικεφαλαία, σβήνω) are genuinely Greek-specific drift patterns not present in the baseline Romans/Galatians package. |
| Low | ~15 new (several flagged as cultural assets) | 3 reused | Automated review sufficient; a notable number are net assets (κοιμηθέντες, αρχάγγελος, σάλπιγγα, ωδίνες, γρηγορώ/νήφω) rather than risks. |
Required Translation Memory Updates Before Phase 2
The following new entries must be added to translation_memory.json (version increment required) before any Phase 2 segment translation of 1 Thessalonians begins, per the baseline’s own update procedure in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md:
parousia→ παρουσία (Critical)meeting_the_lord→ απάντησις (Critical)caught_up→ αρπάζω/αρπαγησόμεθα (High)fallen_asleep→ κοιμάομαι/κεκοιμημένοι (Low, asset)full_assurance→ πληροφορία / πλήρη βεβαιότητα (High)day_of_the_lord→ ημέρα Κυρίου (High)sexual_immorality→ πορνεία (High)comfort_one_another→ παρηγορείτε / ενθαρρύνετε (Medium-High, documented exception to baseline προτρέπω default at 1 Thess 4:18)archangel→ αρχάγγελος (Low, asset)trumpet_of_god→ σάλπιγγα Θεού (Low, asset)shout_of_command→ κέλευσμα (Medium)quench_the_spirit→ μη σβήνετε το Πνεύμα (Medium)hope→ ελπίδα (Medium)sons_of_light→ υιοί φωτός (Low-Medium)
All fourteen require human theologian sign-off before entering active translation memory, consistent with the baseline’s rule that any new Critical or High risk term must be flagged for theologian review at the point of first entry.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: χάρη
Transliteration: chári
Doctrine: Grace
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package: CRITICAL — Modern Greek ‘χάρη’ has broadened into everyday senses of personal charm and legal pardon; must be anchored to unmerited divine favor. Frames this letter’s opening and closing epistolary formula (1:1; 5:28); here the risk is liturgical-formula flattening rather than argumentative contrast, but the same secular senses must be actively fenced.
Holy
Approved rendering: άγιος
Transliteration: ágios
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package: identical word to ‘saints’ below — Greek does not distinguish the adjective from the noun-category the way English does. Underlies this letter’s repeated ethical vocabulary (αγιασμός, αγιωσύνη, chs. 3-5).
Saints
Approved rendering: άγιοι
Transliteration: ágioi
Doctrine: Sainthood
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package: identical risk profile to Romans 1:7. In 1 Thessalonians 3:13 (‘with all his saints’), the term describes the whole gathered company of believers, living and dead, assembled at Christ’s coming — the corporate, all-believers sense must not collapse into canonized, name-day sainthood. Mandatory disambiguating note required.
Calling
Approved rendering: κλήση
Transliteration: klísi
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package: CRITICAL secular-bleaching risk (ordinary phone call / traffic summons). In 1 Thessalonians this doctrine recurs three times — 2:12 (‘God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory’), 4:7 (‘God has not called us for impurity but for holiness’), and climactically 5:24 (‘faithful is he who calls you’) — the closing occurrence is the letter’s final ground of assurance and must not be allowed to register with bureaucratic flatness.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ανάσταση
Transliteration: anástasi
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package: bodily, historical, once-for-all — never a cyclical-rebirth reading. In 1 Thessalonians this term is also the direct textual basis for the curriculum’s own new doctrine ‘Resurrection of Believers’ (4:14, 16): Christ’s own historical resurrection is the pattern and guarantee of believers’ future bodily resurrection. Reinforced (not undermined) by ανάσταση’s centrality to Greek Orthodox Πάσχα, but must be actively bridged from the Paschal devotional association to this letter’s specific future-believer’s-resurrection claim, not left as devotional flattening.
Lord
Approved rendering: Κύριος
Transliteration: Kýrios
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package: never let it register with the flatness of the everyday honorific; anchor to the Septuagint/YHWH background. This is the single most frequent title in 1 Thessalonians (20+ occurrences: 1:1,3,6,8; 3:8,11-13; 4:1-2,6,15-17; 5:2,9,12,23,27-28), and its force is maximally load-bearing at 4:16-17 (‘the Lord himself will descend… to meet the Lord’) and 5:2 (‘the day of the Lord’).
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Υιός του Θεού
Transliteration: Yiós tou Theoú
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package: unique, eternal, co-equal Sonship, never adoptive. At 1:10 (‘to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead’) this Sonship is the direct ground of believers’ entire eschatological expectation.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ιησούς
Transliteration: Iisoús
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package: standard NT and liturgical form. Occurs throughout, paired repeatedly with Χριστός and Κύριος (e.g. 1:1,3; 4:14; 5:9,23).
God
Approved rendering: Θεός
Transliteration: Theós
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package: standard and unambiguous. Constant referent throughout (e.g. 1:1,4,9; 2:12-13; 4:1,3,5,7-8; 5:9,18,23).
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Άγιο Πνεύμα
Transliteration: Ágio Pnévma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package: personal third Person of the Trinity, never an impersonal force. Confirms the gospel’s arrival (1:5), is the source of joy amid affliction (1:6), grounds the call to sanctification (4:8), and must not be ‘quenched’ by the congregation (5:19) — the personal referent must be preserved in this last context especially, against any Watchtower-style impersonal-force reading.
Father
Approved rendering: Πατέρας
Transliteration: Patéras
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Frames the letter’s opening address (1:1,3) and Paul’s prayer to ‘our God and Father’ for the way back to Thessalonica (3:11) and the church’s sanctification (3:13).
Salvation
Approved rendering: σωτηρία
Transliteration: sotiría
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package: guard against the Orthodox theosis-only reframing (gradual participatory deification) displacing Romans’/this letter’s emphasis on a decisive reconciliation received by faith. At 5:8-9, salvation is the ‘helmet’ hope believers wear, and God’s purpose for believers is explicitly salvation, not wrath — the image’s decisiveness (a helmet put on, not a lifelong unfolding alone) should be preserved alongside the legitimate ongoing-transformation sense elsewhere in Scripture.
Parousia
Approved rendering: παρουσία
Transliteration: parousía
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Category: Eschatology
NEW, CRITICAL — the book’s central and highest-priority new term (2:19; 3:13; 4:15; 5:23). Two-directional risk: (1) near-total secular bleaching to flat administrative ‘presence/attendance’ (school/workplace attendance sheets are literally titled ‘παρουσίες’); (2) competing liturgical accretion via the fixed compound ‘Δευτέρα Παρουσία’ (Second Coming), permanently associated with Last Judgment iconography, which risks importing excess judgment-emphasis into 1 Thessalonians 4’s comfort-first pastoral context. Mandatory translator note every occurrence, actively invoking the Hellenistic royal-arrival background while moderating judgment-heaviness specifically at 4:13-18. Must never be rendered as an invisible or undetectable presence (a Watchtower-specific doctrine foreign to Paul’s text, which describes a shout, an archangel’s voice, a trumpet, and believers visibly meeting Christ, 4:16-17).
Meeting The Lord
Transliteration: eis apántisin tou Kyríou / proüpantó ton Kýrio
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Category: Eschatology
NEW, CRITICAL — the single most severe secular-bleaching risk in this book. At 4:17, Modern Greek ‘απάντηση’ has been completely repurposed as ‘answer/reply’; unassisted, the phrase can register as nonsensical or flattened (‘to the answer of the Lord’) at the passage’s emotional and doctrinal climax. The original sense is the Hellenistic civic technical term for a delegation going out to formally welcome an arriving dignitary and escort him back in procession. Retain ‘εις απάντησιν του Κυρίου’ in direct Scripture quotation for liturgical continuity with the historic Greek Bible text; mandatory explanatory note every occurrence; use the living compound verb ‘προϋπαντώ’ in surrounding paraphrastic/teaching prose, following the Today’s Greek Version (TGV) precedent.
Dead In Christ
Approved rendering: οι νεκροί εν Χριστώ
Transliteration: hoi nekroí en Christó
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Category: Christology
NEW. ‘εν Χριστώ’ must retain full union-with-Christ force, not merely ‘Christian’ as a generic religious-affiliation label. At 4:16 the temporal marker ‘first’ directly answers the Thessalonians’ grief-driven fear that the deceased are disadvantaged relative to the living at Christ’s coming.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: ευαγγέλιο
Transliteration: evangélio
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package: identical to the NT’s own εὐαγγέλιον; zero translation gap; guard against the modern secular ‘any good news’ sense. In 1 Thessalonians, repeated at 1:5; 2:2,4,8-9; 3:6, tied to Paul’s founding ministry among the Thessalonians and its confirmation ‘in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full assurance’ (1:5).
Faith
Approved rendering: πίστη
Transliteration: písti
Doctrine: Faith
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package: personal trust in Christ, not generalized loyalty or self-belief. Anchors the letter’s opening triad ‘work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope’ (1:3), Timothy’s report (3:2,5,6,7,10), and the breastplate image (5:8).
Sanctification
Approved rendering: αγιασμός
Transliteration: agiasmós
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package: also the specific name of the Epiphany Great Blessing of Water rite; must not narrow to that ritual sense. Stated as God’s revealed will three times in one short unit in this letter (4:3,4,7) and again in the climactic benediction (5:23).
Called
Approved rendering: κλητός
Transliteration: klitós
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλητός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package: context-sensitive across ministry-calling, sainthood, and salvation senses; check which is active per occurrence in this letter.
Election
Approved rendering: εκλογή
Transliteration: eklogí
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package: must not default to the ballot-box connotation. At 1:4 (‘knowing… your election’), grounds the entire letter’s confidence in the Thessalonians’ salvation.
Caught Up
Approved rendering: αρπαγησόμεθα (αρπάζω)
Transliteration: arpagisómetha (arpázo)
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Category: Eschatology
NEW, High risk. At 4:17, Modern Greek ‘αρπάζω’ is dominated by negative, often criminal senses (grab violently, snatch, abduct/kidnap). Unmitigated, this risks a hostile-seizure misreading of a joyful, divinely-initiated gathering. Retain the verb (no adequate substitute preserves both suddenness and divine agency); lean on the passive voice and surrounding glorious imagery (clouds, meeting, ‘always with the Lord’); mandatory translator note every occurrence. Must retain Paul’s plain, corporate address to all believers (‘we who are alive’), never a class-restricted reading.
Full Assurance
Approved rendering: πλήρη βεβαιότητα
Transliteration: plíri vevaiótita
Doctrine: Gospel
Category: Faith
NEW, High risk. Modern Greek ‘πληροφορία’ has been entirely bleached into the neutral informational sense (news bulletin/data). At 1:5, prefer the paraphrase ‘πλήρη βεβαιότητα’ (full certainty/conviction) over the bare noun πληροφορία, whose modern sense is now dominant enough to surface on a first reading even with a supporting note.
Sexual Immorality
Approved rendering: πορνεία
Transliteration: porneía
Doctrine: Sanctification
Category: Sanctification
NEW, High risk. Modern Greek ‘πορνεία’ has narrowed sharply to mean commercial prostitution specifically, risking a serious under-scoping of Paul’s broader prohibition of all illicit sexual activity at 4:3. Mandatory explanatory broadening in surrounding prose so adultery or premarital sexual activity are not implicitly exempted.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: ημέρα Κυρίου
Transliteration: iméra Kyríou
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Category: Eschatology
NEW, High risk. A stable, zero-gap OT/NT technical term readable directly from the Septuagint background, but ‘ημέρα’ alone risks a merely calendrical reading unless ‘Κυρίου’ actively sustains its full divine-judgment force. Uniquely in Greek, must be explicitly distinguished from the unrelated, purely calendrical ‘Κυριακή’ (Sunday), which shares the same root. Mandatory disambiguating note at 5:2.
Comfort One Another
Approved rendering: παρηγορείτε αλλήλους
Transliteration: parigoreíte allílous
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Category: Faith
NEW — DOCUMENTED EXCEPTION to the default ‘exhort’ entry above. At 4:18 the register is unmistakably grief-comfort, not exhortation-to-duty; mechanically applying προτρέπω would misrepresent Paul’s pastoral purpose. Render with παρηγορείτε (‘console,’ cf. the living Orthodox funeral-consolation noun παρηγοριά) or ενθαρρύνετε (‘encourage’). This is the letter’s pastoral hinge verse for the ‘Hope in Grief’ doctrine; flag every occurrence of παρακαλέω in this letter for register check against this exception before applying the baseline default.
Medium Risk Terms
Church
Approved rendering: εκκλησία
Transliteration: ekklisía
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package: distinguish the local, gathered congregation from the institutional national-Church sense or the physical building. Opens the letter’s address (‘to the church of the Thessalonians,’ 1:1).
Peace
Approved rendering: ειρήνη
Transliteration: eiríni
Doctrine: Peace with God
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package: distinguish from the Hesychast mystical-contemplative sense of inner stillness. Opens the letter’s greeting (1:1), names the false slogan of the unprepared at the Day of the Lord (‘peace and security,’ 5:3), and closes in the title ‘the God of peace’ (5:23).
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: ευχαριστία
Transliteration: efcharistía
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package: distinguish general gratitude from the sacramental Eucharist. Appears in the letter’s opening thanksgiving formula (1:2), Paul’s gratitude for the word’s reception (2:13), and the closing exhortation ‘give thanks in all circumstances’ (5:18).
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: βασιλεία του Θεού
Transliteration: vasileía tou Theoú
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. At 2:12 believers are called ‘into his own kingdom and glory.‘
Gentiles
Approved rendering: έθνη
Transliteration: éthni
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. At 4:5, marks the contrast group ‘who do not know God,’ framing the sanctification unit’s warning against sexual immorality.
Glory
Approved rendering: δόξα
Transliteration: dóxa
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. At 2:12 believers are called ‘into his own kingdom and glory’; at 2:20 the Thessalonians themselves are Paul’s ‘glory’ at Christ’s coming.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: δύναμη Θεού
Transliteration: dýnami Theoú
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. At 1:5, the gospel came ‘not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full assurance.‘
Hope
Approved rendering: ελπίδα
Transliteration: elpída
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Category: Faith
NEW for this curriculum. Modern Greek ‘ελπίδα’ (also a common given name; zero lexical gap) skews toward informal, probabilistic optimism in everyday use. Must be anchored at 1:3 and especially 4:13 (‘so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope’) to certain expectation grounded in Christ’s own historical resurrection (4:14), not uncertain wishing. Central to the letter’s distinctive ‘Hope in Grief’ doctrine.
Shout Of Command
Approved rendering: κέλευσμα
Transliteration: kéleusma
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: κέλευσμα
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Rare in ordinary Modern Greek speech but preserved as a genuine liturgical asset in the Divine Liturgy, where the deacon’s exhortation ‘Κέλευσον, Δέσποτα’ (‘Command, Master’) to the celebrant carries the identical root. Actively invoke this register in teaching material at 4:16 rather than treating the word as merely archaic.
Always With The Lord
Approved rendering: πάντοτε σύν Κυρίω
Transliteration: pántote sýn Kyrío
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Inherits the Critical ‘Lord’ risk (must not flatten σύν Κυρίω to a ‘with Mister’ register). This is the passage’s true doctrinal climax and the specific pastoral answer to grief (4:17b); render with warmth consistent with the baseline’s Romans 8/12 tone guidance, not with mechanical brevity.
Boldness
Approved rendering: παρρησία
Transliteration: parrisía
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: παρρησία (root of ἐπαρρησιασάμεθα)
Category: Church
NEW. Modern Greek ‘παρρησία’ can carry a mildly negative connotation of overstepping bounds (impudence) alongside its positive civic ‘free speech’ sense; anchor to Spirit-given gospel confidence, not brashness. At 2:2.
Wrath
Approved rendering: οργή
Transliteration: orgí
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ὀργή
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Modern Greek ‘οργή’ is common and stable for everyday anger/temper; must be anchored to God’s righteous, judicial wrath, not a merely emotional human-scale outburst. At 1:10 and 5:9, connected forward to the Day of the Lord’s judgment framework.
Affliction
Approved rendering: θλίψη
Transliteration: thlípsi
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Fully alive word for both ordinary sorrow and, in Christian usage, persecution; ensure the specifically faith-related, persecution-for-the-gospel sense (1:6; 3:3-4,7) is not diluted into generic ‘hardship of life.‘
Crown Of Boasting
Approved rendering: στέφανος καυχήσεως
Transliteration: stéfanos kavchíseos
Doctrine: Christ-Centered Ministry
Category: Christology
NEW. ‘στέφανος’ is stable but carries a strong competing Modern Greek resonance toward the Orthodox marriage sacrament’s crowning rite; a brief clarifying note distinguishing this victor’s/honorary wreath image from the wedding-crown association is advisable wherever taught. At 2:19.
Holiness Abstract
Approved rendering: αγιωσύνη
Transliteration: agiosýni
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιωσύνη
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Distinct lexeme from αγιασμός (the ongoing process); names the resulting consecrated moral state/character — the goal-state of Paul’s prayer at 3:13. Distinguish process (αγιασμός, chs. 4-5) from resulting character (αγιωσύνη, 3:13) explicitly in teaching material.
Lust Desire
Approved rendering: πάθος επιθυμίας
Transliteration: páthos epithymías
Doctrine: Sanctification
Category: Sin
NEW. Modern Greek ‘επιθυμία’ is usually neutral or positive in everyday use; the NT’s negatively-charged, specifically sexual sense at 4:5 requires the qualifying phrase ‘πάθος επιθυμίας,’ never bare επιθυμία, to avoid a flattened, morally neutral reading.
Times And Seasons
Approved rendering: χρόνοι και καιροί
Transliteration: chrónoi kai kairoí
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: χρόνοι καὶ καιροί
Category: Eschatology
NEW, genuine Greek-specific teaching asset. The live χρόνος (chronological duration) / καιρός (appointed, decisive moment) distinction directly supports the ‘not a calendar date but a decisive moment’ point at 5:1.
Peace And Security
Approved rendering: ειρήνη και ασφάλεια
Transliteration: eiríni kai asfáleia
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια
Category: Eschatology
NEW. ειρήνη inherits the baseline Medium risk. ‘ασφάλεια’ carries a strong modern commercial-insurance connotation (life insurance, insurance companies) alongside general ‘safety/security’; the false-confidence point of 5:3 lands clearly in context but merits a brief note preventing a narrow financial-security misreading.
Sons Of Light
Approved rendering: υιοί φωτός
Transliteration: yioí fotós
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Stable dualistic metaphor; guard against importing a Gnostic-sounding cosmic/metaphysical dualism — Paul’s use at 5:5 is ethical-identity, not metaphysical.
Breastplate Helmet
Approved rendering: θώρακας / περικεφαλαία
Transliteration: thórakas / perikefalaía
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: θώραξ…
Category: Salvation
NEW. ‘θώρακας’ is now primarily anatomical/medical (‘thorax’) in Modern Greek, risking loss of the martial armor image; ‘περικεφαλαία’ is elevated/literary rather than the everyday ‘κράνος’ — a deliberate stylistic register choice to flag in teaching material, not an accident. At 5:8.
Quench The Spirit
Approved rendering: μη σβήνετε το Πνεύμα
Transliteration: mi svínete to Pnévma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Category: God
NEW. Modern Greek ‘σβήνω’ is the completely ordinary verb for turning off a light, phone, or appliance, or extinguishing a literal fire. The fire-of-the-Spirit imagery (cf. Acts 2) must be actively reactivated in context or the command at 5:19 risks reading as a trivial appliance instruction.
Spirit Soul Body
Transliteration: pnévma, psychí, sóma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Category: Sanctification
NEW. The conceptual risk mirrors the baseline’s σάρξ/flesh caution: Greek philosophical heritage (Platonic/Stoic anthropology, absorbed into popular piety) could lead a reader to import a rigid tripartite anthropology the text may not be pressing as systematic doctrine at 5:23. Present as an expression of the whole person’s preservation, not a proof-text for a specific anthropological system.
Low Risk Terms
Prophecy
Approved rendering: προφητεία
Transliteration: profiteía
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: προφητεία
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. At 5:20, congregational prophetic utterances are not to be despised.
Exhort
Approved rendering: προτρέπω
Transliteration: protrépo
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package as the default rendering of παρακαλέω in exhortation-to-duty contexts (4:1, 4:10, 5:14). DOCUMENTED EXCEPTION for this curriculum: do NOT apply προτρέπω at 1 Thessalonians 4:18 — see the separate ‘comfort_one_another’ entry for the required grief-comfort register substitution.
Boast In The Cross
Transliteration: kavchóme ston stavró
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: καυχάομαι
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (root καυχάομαι). In 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, the same verb root is applied to Paul’s ‘crown of boasting’ over the Thessalonians themselves at Christ’s coming — a legitimate extension of the baseline sense to boasting in fellow believers’ faithfulness, not a new object of boasting rivaling the cross.
Apostle
Approved rendering: απόστολος
Transliteration: apóstolos
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package: stable, unambiguous. Implicit at 1:1 (Paul, Silas, Timothy); explicit at 2:6 (‘though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ’).
Fallen Asleep
Approved rendering: κεκοιμημένοι / κοιμηθέντες
Transliteration: kekoimiméni / koimithéntes
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: κεκοιμημένοι / κοιμηθέντες
Category: Eschatology
NEW, genuine asset. Modern Greek preserves this euphemism directly and productively — κοιμητήριο (‘sleeping-place’) is the ordinary word for cemetery, and ‘εκοιμήθη’ is standard obituary/church-announcement language for a death. No gloss required at 4:13,14,15. Must not be taught alongside any denial of a conscious intermediate state with Christ (a Watchtower-specific soul-sleep doctrine foreign to Paul’s comfort argument, which depends on the deceased being genuinely ‘with the Lord’).
Archangel
Approved rendering: αρχάγγελος
Transliteration: archángelos
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: ἀρχάγγελος
Category: Eschatology
NEW, genuine asset. Reinforced by Greek Orthodox devotion to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (Ταξιάρχες), with a major feast (Σύναξις Αρχαγγέλων, November 8). At 4:16.
Trumpet Of God
Approved rendering: σάλπιγγα Θεού
Transliteration: sálpinga Theoú
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: σάλπιγξ θεοῦ
Category: Eschatology
NEW, genuine asset. Reinforced rather than undermined by its place in Byzantine Last Judgment iconography (‘η σάλπιγγα της Δευτέρας Παρουσίας’). At 4:16.
Clouds
Approved rendering: νεφέλες
Transliteration: nefeles
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: νεφέλαι
Category: Eschatology
NEW, genuine asset. The theophanic association (Exodus, Christ’s Ascension at Acts 1:9, the Transfiguration) is directly accessible to a Greek reader without translation. At 4:17.
Idols
Approved rendering: είδωλα
Transliteration: eídola
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: εἴδωλα
Category: Sin
NEW. Stable; culturally distant for a contemporary Greek reader (no live idol-worship social reality) so requires historical framing in teaching notes, but no lexical drift risk. At 1:9.
Satan
Approved rendering: Σατανάς
Transliteration: Satanás
Doctrine: Sin
Original: Σατανᾶς
Category: Sin
NEW. Stable and universally recognized; a real personal spiritual adversary, not a metaphor for impersonal misfortune. At 2:18.
Tempter
Approved rendering: πειραστής
Transliteration: peirastís
Doctrine: Sin
Original: ὁ πειράζων
Category: Sin
NEW. Stable; reinforced by the Lord’s Prayer petition familiar in Greek liturgical use (‘μη μας αφήσεις να πέσουμε σε πειρασμό’). At 3:5, Satan’s role as tester of the Thessalonians’ faith through persecution.
Brotherly Love
Approved rendering: φιλαδελφία
Transliteration: filadelfía
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: φιλαδελφία
Category: Church
NEW. Zero-gap, fully stable term; no drift risk. At 4:9, love within the believing community already ‘taught by God.‘
Love
Approved rendering: αγάπη
Transliteration: agápi
Doctrine: Faith Working through Love
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith
NEW. Zero-gap, fully stable term; also a common given name, lending genuine cultural warmth. At 1:3 (opening triad) and 3:6,12 (Paul’s prayer that it increase and overflow).
Thief
Approved rendering: κλέφτης
Transliteration: kléftis
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: κλέπτης
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Stable, common word. Keep the metaphor’s point (unpredictability of timing) clear in teaching material so it is not misheard as a comment on Christ’s own character. At 5:2,4.
Birth Pains
Approved rendering: ωδίνες
Transliteration: odínes
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ὠδίν
Category: Eschatology
NEW, genuine asset. Standard, fully alive Modern Greek obstetric vocabulary (‘ωδίνες τοκετού’); the metaphor for the Day’s sudden, unavoidable, escalating onset transfers with full force. At 5:3.
Watchful Sober
Approved rendering: γρηγορώ / νήφω
Transliteration: grigoró / nífo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν
Category: Sanctification
NEW, genuine asset. Reinforced by the common Greek personal name Γρηγόριος (‘the watchful one’) and the living adjective νηφάλιος (‘sober’). At 5:6.
Test Examine
Approved rendering: δοκιμάζετε
Transliteration: dokimázete
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: δοκιμάζετε
Category: Church
NEW. Stable, common word (δοκιμή, ‘test/trial’); no drift risk. At 5:21, discernment applied to claimed spiritual utterances.
