What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Linguistic Gap Analysis

Linguistic Gap Analysis: Ephesians (English → Greek)

0. Purpose and Method

This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 8 for the Ephesians curriculum: it maps where the Greek language actually has gaps against English theological vocabulary, and — because this is the Greek Language Package — where the language has the opposite problem the rest of the pipeline faces: too much word, in the wrong direction.

As established in the baseline translation_memory.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json, Modern Greek is the direct linguistic descendant of Koine Greek. For nearly every term below there is no cross-linguistic gap in the ordinary sense — the modern word is the New Testament’s own word. The analytical task is therefore to classify each term along two independent risk axes, exactly as the baseline models:

  • Axis A — Secular bleaching: has centuries of ordinary, non-religious Modern Greek usage worn a theologically loaded NT word down into something mundane, bureaucratic, or commercial (κλήση → phone call; διαθήκη → last will; προορισμός → travel destination)?
  • Axis B — Patristic/liturgical accretion: has Greek Orthodox theology, developed natively in Greek and directly accessible to a Modern Greek reader without any translation barrier, layered additional technical meaning onto the word (μυστήριον → the Seven Sacraments; ἐνέργεια → the Palamite uncreated energies; σῶμα Χριστού → the Eucharistic host)?

A term can sit on neither axis (a lexical asset — retain as-is), on one axis (fence in one direction), or — as Ephesians produces more than any other book studied so far in this pipeline — on both axes simultaneously (the highest-risk category, requiring the heaviest translator-note apparatus).

A third, much smaller category is genuine missing vocabulary: places where Greek has no ready-made single word at all, Koine or Modern, and a compound or paraphrase is structurally necessary regardless of drift.

This document builds directly on analysis/08_core_glossary.md and assets/bible_term_registry.json (already produced) and does not repeat their full entries; it re-sorts the same evidence into the four PRD-mandated Step 8 deliverables: (1) doctrine vocabulary matrix, (2) missing-vocabulary vs. crowded-neighborhood inventory, (3) transliteration-vs-paraphrase decisions, (4) ranked ambiguity list.

1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix

For each of the nine curriculum doctrines: the available Greek term(s), the specific weakness class (secular bleaching / patristic accretion / crowded neighbor / missing vocabulary / none), and the recommended handling strategy.

1.1 Salvation by Grace through Faith

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
χάρη (grace)Secular bleaching (charm; legal pardon)[BASELINE Critical] Reuse exactly; mandatory anchor note every occurrence, especially 2:5, 2:8, 1:6-7.
πίστη (faith)Mild secular bleaching (generic self-belief)[BASELINE High] Reuse exactly; keep object of faith = Christ explicit.
σωτηρία / σεσωσμένοι (salvation/saved)Patristic accretion (theosis)[BASELINE Critical] Reuse exactly; preserve the perfect-passive “already accomplished” force of 2:8 against an exclusively ongoing-deification reading.
νεκρός (dead in sin)Mild secular softening (funeral-word vividness can paradoxically read as metaphor for weakness)[NEW Medium] Retain literal “dead”; gloss as total incapacity, not sickness.
έργα (works, unqualified)False-friend collision with baseline’s Galatians-specific έργα νόμου[NEW High] Retain έργα; explicit note that scope here is all human merit, not Torah-observance specifically — the baseline term is a trap, not a match.
ποίημα (workmanship)Secular bleaching (dominant modern sense = “poem”)[NEW High] Retain with mandatory gloss “skilled handiwork,” never left to stand alone.
δώρο (gift)None — rare asset[NEW Low] Ordinary “present” sense reinforces Paul’s point; no fencing needed.

Assessment: No missing vocabulary. The doctrine’s single highest-stakes term (χάρη) is already a Critical baseline entry; Ephesians adds one genuine trap (έργα vs. έργα νόμου) not previously modeled because Romans/Galatians only needed the Torah-specific sense.

1.2 Election and Predestination in Christ

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
εκλογή (election)Secular bleaching (political elections)[BASELINE High] Reuse exactly.
προορισμός / προορίζω (predestined)Severe secular bleaching (dominant sense = travel destination)[NEW Critical] No competing Greek word exists; this is the single most language-structural risk in the doctrine — see §4 ranked list.
πρόθεση / θέλημα / ευδοκία (purpose/will/pleasure)None significant[NEW Medium] Gloss ευδοκία as free, gracious pleasure, not preference.
υιοθεσία (adoption)None significant[BASELINE Medium] Reuse exactly.
κλήση (calling)Severe secular bleaching (phone call, traffic summons)[BASELINE Critical] Reuse exactly; recurs as Ephesians 4’s opening structural exhortation — reactivation required at every occurrence, not a single footnote.

Assessment: No missing vocabulary — the crisis here is entirely secular bleaching, compounded because two of the doctrine’s core terms (κλήση, εκλογή) are already baseline Critical/High, and a third (προορισμός) is new and arguably worse than either.

1.3 The Church as the Body of Christ

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
σῶμα (Χριστού) (body of Christ)Patristic/liturgical collision with the Eucharistic host[NEW Critical] Mandatory disambiguating note at first occurrence (1:23); never suppress the sacramental resonance, but never let it silently substitute for the ecclesial-corporate sense.
κεφαλή (head)Crowded neighbor (modern “CEO/administrative head” sense)[NEW High] Anchor to the organic, nourishing, body-uniting sense of 4:15-16.
πλήρωμα (fullness)Crowded neighbor (modern “ship’s crew”); background Gnostic technical term[NEW High] Gloss as “totality/completeness,” not “crew.”
ανακεφαλαίωση (unite under one head)Missing vocabulary — rare compound, mildly opaque even to native readers[NEW High] Retain the compound but pair with an explanatory gloss, not a bare transliteration.
εκκλησία (church)Crowded neighbor (institutional Church of Greece; building)[BASELINE Medium] Reuse exactly.
ενότητα (unity)Crowded neighbor (modern “national unity” political rhetoric)[NEW Medium] Keep cross-ethnic, Spirit-given referent explicit.
οικοδομή (building up)Crowded neighbor (construction industry)[NEW Medium] Gloss as edification.
καταρτισμός (equipping)Crowded neighbor (vocational job-training)[NEW Medium] Gloss as whole-body strengthening.
τέλειος ανήρ (mature manhood)Crowded neighbor (Aristotelian “perfect/complete”; individualized misreading)[NEW Medium-High] Anchor as corporate maturity, not individual sinlessness.

Assessment: This doctrine contains Ephesians’ single most theologically dense cluster of new Critical/High terms; one genuine missing-vocabulary item (ανακεφαλαίωση).

1.4 Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
έθνη (Gentiles)Crowded neighbor (nationalist έθνος)[BASELINE Medium] Reuse exactly.
περιτομή (circumcision)None[BASELINE Low] Reuse exactly.
διαθήκες της επαγγελίας (covenants of promise)Double crowded neighbor (legal will; “profession”)[BASELINE High] Reuse exactly; both drifts must be fenced together.
πολιτεία (commonwealth)Crowded neighbor (modern nation-state)[NEW Medium] Compounds the baseline’s Ισραήλ caution.
καινός άνθρωπος (one new man)Crowded neighbor within the same book (must not merge with 4:24’s νέος ἄνθρωπος)[NEW High] Corporate referent, explicitly distinguished from the individual-referent term below.
καταλλαγή (reconciliation)None significant[NEW Medium] Retain dual (vertical + horizontal) reference.
μεσότοιχον του φραγμού (dividing wall)None — asset[NEW Low-Medium] Vivid, historically groundable.
ναός άγιος (holy temple)Crowded neighbor (physical church building)[NEW Medium] Anchor to corporate believers, not architecture.

Assessment: No missing vocabulary; the doctrine’s chief risk is an intra-book crowded neighborhood (καινός vs. νέος ἄνθρωπος), unique to Ephesians among this pipeline’s curricula so far.

1.5 The Mystery of Christ Revealed

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
μυστήριο (mystery)Severe patristic/liturgical collision — τα Ιερά Μυστήρια = the Seven Sacraments[NEW Critical] Highest-stakes new term in the book; mandatory note every occurrence (1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19).
μυστήριο μέγα (great mystery, marriage)Same collision, intensified by marriage itself being a Sacrament/Mystery[NEW Critical] Heaviest-handling item in the entire curriculum.
οικονομία (stewardship)Crowded neighbor (national economy) and a rare positive patristic asset (θεία οικονομία aligns with Paul’s own sense)[NEW High] Exploit the aligned asset explicitly in the note rather than only warning against the financial-news sense.
συγκληρονόμοι / σύσσωμα / συμμέτοχοι (fellow heirs etc.)None significant[NEW Medium] Preserve triple repetition rhetorically.
πολυποίκιλη σοφία (manifold wisdom)None — asset[NEW Low]

Assessment: No missing vocabulary; this doctrine contains the single sharpest patristic-accretion collision in the whole book (μυστήριον), rivaled only by ἐνέργεια below.

1.6 Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
ενέργεια / ενεργώ (power at work)Dual-axis collision: secular “electricity” AND patristic Palamite uncreated-energies doctrine[NEW Critical] The single most theologically loaded word in Modern Greek religious vocabulary; anchor to Paul’s contextual sense at every occurrence (1:19-20; 2:2; 3:7, 3:20; 4:16).
επουράνια (heavenly places)Not a false reading, but an unfamiliar technical category[NEW High] Note at first occurrence (1:3) that this differs from ουρανός/παράδεισος generically.
κοσμοκράτορες + αρχαί/εξουσίαι/πνευματικά της πονηρίας (cosmic powers)Crowded neighbor (modern journalistic use for political/business “kosmokrators”)[NEW Critical] Composite; must not be flattened into socio-political critique of human power structures.
πανοπλία (armor)None — asset[NEW Medium] Comprehension support only.
μεθοδεία (schemes)Crowded neighbor (neutral μέθοδος root risks blandness)[NEW Medium] Anchor to cunning/deceit, not mere technique.
διάβολος (the devil)None[NEW Low]
θυρεός (shield, 6:16)Missing vocabulary in ordinary register — archaic word, displaced by ασπίδα in everyday Greek[NEW Low-Medium] Retain θυρεός (matches the specific large Roman shield); brief comprehension gloss, not doctrinal fencing.

Assessment: This doctrine houses two of the book’s three most severe dual-axis Critical terms (ἐνέργεια, κοσμοκράτορες), plus one genuine register-level missing-vocabulary item (θυρεός).

1.7 Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
υποτάσσομαι (submit)Crowded neighbor (national/military occupation-subjugation connotation)[NEW Critical] Requires theologian AND native-speaker joint review; preserve 5:21’s mutuality-first frame before 5:22-24.
κεφαλή (head, marriage sense)See §1.3[NEW High] Maximum pastoral sensitivity at 5:23.
αγάπη (love)Crowded neighbor (indiscriminately broad modern usage — romance, family, soccer)[NEW Medium] Anchor to costly, self-giving pattern for 5:25-33.
σωτήρ (savior)Crowded neighbor (secular “rescuer,” e.g. lifeguard, sports “savior”)[NEW High] Retain full christological weight.
μυστήριο μέγαSee §1.5[NEW Critical]
δούλοι (bondservants)Crowded neighbor (chattel-slavery connotation; live metaphor for degrading subjugation)[NEW High] Retain lexically; require careful pastoral-application framing, not lexical substitution.
κύριοι (masters, lowercase)Identical-word collision with Κύριος (the Lord, Critical baseline term)[NEW High] Strict typographic/capitalization discipline throughout ch. 6.
παιδεία και νουθεσία Κυρίου (discipline/instruction)Adjacent to baseline’s forbidden-inversion παιδαγωγός (Galatians)[NEW Medium] Do not import the restrictive-custodial connotation; do not flatten into mere schooling.
λουτρόν, μία σάρξ, ὑπακούετε/τιμᾶτεNone — assets, LXX-quotable[NEW Low]

Assessment: No missing vocabulary; this doctrine has the highest concentration of culturally sensitive, not merely lexically ambiguous terms in the book (υποτάσσομαι, δούλοι) — risk here is application-framing risk layered atop translation risk.

1.8 Gifts for Building Up the Church

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
απόστολοι, προφήτες, ευαγγελιστές, ποιμένες, διδάσκαλοιCrowded neighbor (institutional job-title flattening)[NEW Medium] Anchor as Spirit-given functions, not an org chart.
πνευματικά χαρίσματα (spiritual gifts)Crowded neighbor (secular “natural talent/charisma”)[BASELINE Medium] Reuse exactly.
χαρίζομαι (forgiving)Shares root with χάρη’s Critical secular senses[NEW Medium] Positive teaching asset (grace-forgiveness transparency) if not trivialized.
οικοδομή, καταρτισμός, τέλειος ανήρ, πλήρωμα, σῶμα, κεφαλήSee §1.3Cross-listed; same strategies apply.

Assessment: No new missing-vocabulary or Critical items beyond those already logged under §1.3; this doctrine is compositionally dependent on the Body-of-Christ vocabulary cluster.

1.9 Walking in Newness of Life

Available term(s)WeaknessRecommended strategy
περιπατώ (walk/conduct)Mild bleaching — metaphorical sense not the reader’s first association[NEW Medium] Recurs as the book’s structural motif (2:2, 2:10, 4:1, 4:17, 5:2, 5:8, 5:15); reinforce each time.
παλαιός άνθρωπος / νέος άνθρωπος (old/new self)Crowded neighbor within the book (must not merge with 2:15’s corporate καινός ἄνθρωπος)[NEW High] Individual referent, explicitly distinguished.
τέκνα φωτός, καρπός του φωτός (children/fruit of light)None significant[NEW Low/Medium] Keep καρπός singular per established Galatians convention.
πληρούσθε εν Πνεύματι (filled with the Spirit)Framing risk (revivalist vs. sacramental-liturgical expectation)[NEW Medium] Present ongoing-imperative sense; avoid both extremes.
σφραγίδα/σφραγίζω (sealed)Crowded neighbor (bureaucratic stamp)[NEW High] Anchor to owner’s-mark/authenticity sense.
αρραβώνας (guarantee/down payment)Crowded neighbor (modern “engagement/betrothal”) — double-edged, exploitable with a note given ch. 5’s bridal imagery[NEW High] Never leave unglossed.
ψαλμοί, ύμνοι, ωδές πνευματικέςNone — asset[NEW Low]

Assessment: No missing vocabulary; the doctrine’s risk is dominated by two crowded-neighborhood High-risk terms (σφραγίδα, αρραβώνας) plus the recurring intra-book παλαιός/καινός ἄνθρωπος distinction already logged under §1.4.

2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods

2.1 Genuine Missing Vocabulary (no ready single word, Koine or Modern)

These are the only items in the entire Ephesians curriculum where the problem is a true lexical gap rather than drift or collision — Greek simply has no compact, transparent word:

TermIssueStrategy
ανακεφαλαιώσασθαι (1:10, unite under one head)Rare compound, opaque even to educated native readersRetain with mandatory explanatory gloss (“to bring everything together under Christ as head”); never a bare transliteration
θυρεός (6:16, shield)Archaic register word, displaced by ασπίδα in everyday speechRetain (it correctly specifies the large rectangular Roman shield, unlike ασπίδα); brief comprehension gloss only, no doctrinal risk
ῥήμα vs. λόγος distinction (6:17, “sword of the Spirit… the word of God”)Both words are common, but the specific choice of the actively-spoken ῥήμα over the general λόγος has no natural one-word equivalent contrast in ordinary usageNote the distinction explicitly; do not silently default to λόγος
τέλειος ἀνήρ as a corporate category (4:13)Greek has τέλειος and ἀνήρ, but no compact idiom for “the church’s collective full-grown maturity” as opposed to an individual’sParaphrase-support gloss required alongside the retained phrase

Observation: Ephesians has markedly less genuine missing vocabulary than a typical cross-linguistic Language Package in this pipeline would — Greek’s zero-gap advantage holds even for this letter’s dense, architecturally complex vocabulary (πλήρωμα, ἀνακεφαλαίωσις, ἐνέργεια, μυστήριον are all already Greek words, just crowded ones). Only four items above require an actual paraphrase-support strategy rather than a fencing/anchoring strategy.

2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods (need active fencing)

These are words where Greek has too much available meaning pressing in from either secular life or Orthodox theological/liturgical life, requiring deliberate disambiguation rather than vocabulary invention. Organized by pressure source:

Secular-bleaching pressure (everyday usage crowds out the theological sense):

  • προορισμός (predestined → travel destination) — most severe in this category
  • κλήση (calling → phone call/traffic summons) — baseline, recurs intensively in ch. 4
  • εκλογή (election → political vote) — baseline
  • σφραγίδα (sealed → bureaucratic stamp)
  • αρραβώνας (guarantee → engagement ring)
  • πλήρωμα (fullness → ship’s crew)
  • οικοδομή (building up → construction industry)
  • καταρτισμός (equipping → vocational job training)
  • κεφαλή (head → CEO/administrative chief)
  • ποίημα (workmanship → poem)
  • υποτάσσομαι (submit → coerced occupation/subjugation)
  • διαθήκη (covenant → last will) — baseline, recurs at 2:12
  • πολιτεία (commonwealth → nation-state)
  • ναός (temple → physical church building)
  • ενότητα (unity → national-political unity)
  • αγάπη (love → indiscriminately broad usage)
  • σωτήρ (savior → generic rescuer)
  • δούλοι/κύριοι (bondservants/masters → chattel slavery; Lord-title collision)

Patristic/liturgical-accretion pressure (Orthodox theology crowds the NT sense):

  • μυστήριον (mystery → the Seven Sacraments) — most severe in this category
  • σῶμα Χριστού (body of Christ → the Eucharistic host)
  • ενέργεια (power at work → Palamite uncreated divine energies) — also secularly bleached, see below
  • μυστήριο μέγα (great mystery of marriage → marriage as Sacrament)
  • αγιασμός-adjacent ἁγιάζω (sanctify → the Epiphany water-blessing rite; carried from baseline)

Dual-axis pressure (both directions simultaneously — the highest-risk cell of the whole matrix):

  • ενέργεια/ἐνεργέω — electricity AND uncreated energies
  • μυστήριον / μυστήριο μέγα — bleached toward “puzzle/secret” in loose colloquial use, while simultaneously over-determined toward “Sacrament” in formal/liturgical use
  • κοσμοκράτορες (composite with ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι) — bleached toward political-strongman journalism while also carrying the weight of a NT-unique, cosmologically loaded hapax legomenon

No other Language Package documented in this pipeline’s baseline shows this triple dual-axis concentration; Ephesians is measurably the highest-density chapter-for-chapter risk profile encountered so far for Greek specifically because chapters 1, 3, and 6 each contribute one dual-axis Critical term.

3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions

Decision typeApplies toRationale
Retain Koine/Modern word verbatim, no gloss needed (zero-gap asset)βάπτισμα, απόστολος, προφήτης, διάβολος, δόξα (contextually), πανοπλία, ψαλμοί/ύμνοι/ωδές πνευματικές, μία σάρκα, ακρογωνιαίος λίθος, πρεσβεύω, παρρησία, δώρο, έλεος, τέκνα φωτόςWord is stable, living, and carries no significant secular or patristic drift; matches baseline’s “Low risk / asset” category.
Retain Koine/Modern word, mandatory explanatory note (crowded neighborhood, one axis)κλήση, εκλογή, διαθήκη, κεφαλή, πλήρωμα, σωτήρ, αγάπη, δούλοι, κύριοι, υποτάσσομαι, οικοδομή, καταρτισμός, τέλειος ανήρ, ναός άγιος, ενότητα, πολιτεία, σφραγίδα, αρραβώναςThe word is correct and required (it is the NT’s own word); the risk is reader default-association, not lexical error. A brief anchoring note redirects to the intended sense without requiring a different word.
Retain Koine/Modern word, mandatory explanatory note (dual-axis, both directions)μυστήριο, μυστήριο μέγα, ενέργεια/ενεργώ, σώμα (Χριστού), κοσμοκράτορες (composite)Highest note-density requirement in the book; a single sentence-length gloss is insufficient — Phase 2 material teaching these passages should include a standing sidebar/footnote apparatus, not just an inline clause.
Retain rare/archaic word, comprehension gloss only (no doctrinal fencing needed)θυρεός, ρήμα (distinguished from λόγος), προσαγωγήThe word is simply less familiar in ordinary registers, not competing with a wrong meaning; a brief “in plain terms” aside suffices.
Retain compound, mandatory explanatory paraphrase (missing vocabulary)ανακεφαλαιώσασθαι, τέλειος ἀνήρ (corporate sense)No natural single-word equivalent conveys the full compound sense; paraphrase must run alongside the retained term, not replace it.
New coinage/compound not required anywhere in this bookUnlike some Language Packages in this pipeline, Ephesians requires zero brand-new Greek coinages; every gap is resolved by retaining an existing (Koine or Modern) word plus a note, confirming this Language Package’s structural advantage even under heavy doctrinal density.
Forbidden substitution (word exists but must never be used unglossed / must never be substituted with a “more modern-sounding” alternative)μαγεία (never φαρμακεία, carried from Galatians, not present in Ephesians but retained in shared translation memory), δωρεάν (never for “in vain,” Galatians-carried), προορισμός (never softened by avoiding the word altogether in favor of a paraphrase that hides the doctrine), υποτάσσομαι (never rendered as a coercive-only synonym that erases 5:21’s mutuality)Distinguishes “needs a note” from “must never be quietly avoided or swapped” — the doctrine must still be taught using the theologically correct, if risky, word.

4. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities in Ephesians

Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × likelihood of misreading × absence of a safe alternative word), consistent with the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework:

  1. μυστήριον / μυστήριο μέγα (1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19) — Collides head-on with τα Ιερά Μυστήρια, the standing Orthodox name for the Seven Sacraments, in the opposite semantic direction (revealed secret vs. ongoing sacred rite). No alternative word exists. Critical.
  2. ἐνέργεια / ἐνεργέω (1:19-20; 2:2; 3:7, 3:20; 4:16) — The single most theologically overloaded word in Modern Greek religious vocabulary: simultaneously “electricity” in secular use and the Palamite uncreated-energies doctrine in Orthodox mystical theology. Critical.
  3. προορισμός / προορίζω (1:5, 1:11) — Dominant Modern Greek meaning is “travel destination”; no competing word exists to relieve the pressure. Structurally worse than the baseline’s κλήση case because tourism usage is even more universally dominant than the phone-call sense of κλήση. Critical.
  4. σῶμα (Χριστού) (1:23; 4:12, 4:16; 5:23, 5:29-30) — Identical wording to the consecrated Eucharistic host received in Holy Communion; the ecclesial and sacramental senses are related but must not be silently merged in either direction. Critical.
  5. κοσμοκράτορες (composite with ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι/πνευματικά τῆς πονηρίας, 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:12) — NT-unique word with a live contemporary journalistic sense (political/business strongmen) that offers an ideologically comfortable but doctrinally wrong socio-political reading in place of Paul’s claim about real personal spiritual enemies. Critical.
  6. μυστήριο μέγα specifically at 5:32 — Compounds risk #1 with the fact that marriage (γάμος) is itself a Sacrament of the Orthodox Church; the single most pastorally delicate verse-level collision in the book. Critical.
  7. υποτάσσομαι (5:21-24) — Carries national/military-occupation connotations of coerced subjugation in ordinary Modern Greek discourse; Paul’s mutual-submission frame (5:21) preceding the wife-specific application (5:22-24) is easily lost, and contemporary gender-role sensitivities compound the purely lexical risk. Critical, requiring joint theologian + native-speaker review.
  8. κλήση (1:18; 4:1, 4:4) — Baseline Critical term, but Ephesians raises its severity further by making it the opening word of the letter’s entire ethical section (4:1, “walk worthy of the calling”); a single missed reactivation cascades through the whole paraenetic unit.
  9. δοῦλοι / κύριοι (6:5-9) — Two compounding risks: (a) modern chattel-slavery connotations attaching to δούλοι raise real pastoral-framing questions independent of translation accuracy; (b) lowercase κύριοι is visually and aurally identical to the Critical baseline term Κύριος, risking “obey your masters” blurring into “obey your Lords” without strict typographic discipline.
  10. σφραγίδα / σφραγίζω (1:13; 4:30) — Dominant modern sense is a bureaucratic office stamp; the ancient owner’s-mark-of-authenticity sense requires active recovery, structurally parallel to the baseline’s κλήση case.
  11. αρραβώνας (1:14) — Universally read today as “engagement/betrothal”; double-edged, since the letter’s own ch. 5 bridal imagery makes this partly exploitable, but it must never be left unglossed or the financial-guarantee sense of Paul’s own argument disappears entirely.
  12. πλήρωμα (1:23; 3:19; 4:13) — Dominant secondary modern sense is a ship’s or aircraft’s “crew”; unglossed, 1:23 risks a nonsensical “crew of Christ” misreading.
  13. εκλογή (1:4) — Baseline High risk; Ephesians places it at the letter’s doxological opening, raising the stakes of a first-impression misread as political-electoral.
  14. έργα (unqualified, 2:9) vs. the baseline’s Mosaic-specific ἔργα νόμου — a genuine false-friend trap precisely because the correct baseline pattern from Galatians does not apply here; translators pattern-matching to Galatians will wrongly narrow Paul’s universal claim.
  15. καινός ἄνθρωπος (2:15, corporate) vs. παλαιός/νέος ἄνθρωπος (4:22-24, individual) — an intra-book crowded neighborhood unique to Ephesians: two doctrinally distinct categories (corporate Jew-Gentile unity vs. individual moral renewal) sharing nearly identical vocabulary within five chapters of each other.
  16. κεφαλή (1:22; 4:15; 5:23) — Risk of flattening Paul’s organic, nourishing, body-uniting headship image into a merely administrative CEO/hierarchy sense, at maximum pastoral sensitivity in the marriage application of 5:23.
  17. οικονομία (3:2, 3:9) — Dominant modern sense is “the [national] economy”; unusually, the Orthodox technical phrase ἡ θεία οικονομία is a rare case where patristic accretion actually supports rather than distorts Paul’s sense, and the note should exploit rather than merely guard against this.
  18. τέλειος ἀνήρ (4:13) — Risk of an individualized “sinless perfection” misreading (drawing on τέλειος’s Aristotelian philosophical weight) displacing Paul’s corporate, whole-body maturity sense.
  19. διαθήκες τῆς ἐπαγγελίας (2:12) — Double compounding of two already-Critical/High baseline drifts (legal will; mis-derivation to “profession”) landing in a single genitive phrase.
  20. ναός ἅγιος (2:21) — Risk of reading Paul’s corporate-believers-as-temple claim as a statement about church architecture, given ναός’s dominant modern building-referent.

5. Full-Book Chapter Coverage Confirmation

Per the PRD’s full-book coverage mandate, every chapter of Ephesians has been surveyed for load-bearing vocabulary; no chapter is silently omitted. Summary of doctrinal/vocabulary load by chapter:

6. Summary Recommendations for Phase 2

  1. Add προορισμός, σῶμα (Χριστού), μυστήριον/μυστήριο μέγα, ἐνέργεια/ἐνεργώ, and κοσμοκράτορες (composite) to the Critical Forbidden Substitutions list in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, alongside the existing baseline Critical terms (Κύριος, κλήση, εκλογή, διαθήκη, σωτηρία, δικαίωση, χάρη).
  2. Require joint theologian + native-speaker review (not either alone) specifically for υποτάσσομαι, δούλοι, and κύριοι (lowercase) in Ephesians 5-6, given the compounding of lexical risk with contemporary social sensitivity.
  3. Institute a standing footnote/sidebar apparatus, not merely inline clauses, for the three dual-axis Critical terms (μυστήριον, ἐνέργεια, κοσμοκράτορες), since a single gloss sentence cannot carry the required disambiguation load across five-plus recurring occurrences each.
  4. Track the intra-book crowded neighborhoods explicitly in the segment cache: καινός ἄνθρωπος (2:15) vs. παλαιός/νέος ἄνθρωπος (4:22-24) must never be rendered identically or cross-referenced without a distinguishing note.
  5. No new Greek coinage is required anywhere in this curriculum — every genuine gap (ανακεφαλαιώσασθαι, θυρεός, corporate τέλειος ἀνήρ) is resolved by retaining an existing word plus a mandatory paraphrase-gloss, not by inventing new vocabulary. This is a structural advantage worth preserving explicitly for Phase 2 workers unfamiliar with this Language Package’s zero-gap character.

This document extends but does not alter any baseline Romans/Galatians entry in translation_memory.json or bible_term_registry.json. See 07_semantic_analysis.md for verse-level discussion and 08_core_glossary.md for the full term inventory underlying this gap analysis. See 12_ai_translation_requirements.md for the enforcement instructions these findings feed into.
