Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: Revelation (Greek)
Methodology Note
This document maps every identifiable Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic/typological reference, and every cross-curriculum parallel to the Romans/Galatians Language Package, chapter by chapter across the whole of Revelation. Citations are given in normalized form (Revelation 21:1, Genesis 15:6, Romans 8:28) so they can be mechanically matched in Phase 2 tooling.
Revelation is the most OT-saturated book in the New Testament by allusion density, while containing almost no formal introduced quotations (“as it is written…”). Nearly every verse echoes prior Scripture — chiefly Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, the Psalms, and Exodus — without citation markers. For a Greek-reading audience this has a distinctive advantage flagged throughout 07_semantic_analysis.md: the Septuagint (Ο΄) wording of these OT source texts is directly legible in the same language as Revelation’s own text, so allusions that are invisible without scholarly apparatus in other languages can, in Greek, be shown to the learner side-by-side in their own shared vocabulary.
Risk tiers follow the baseline convention (Critical/High/Medium/Low). “Translation sensitivity” in each row addresses specifically what could go wrong in Greek rendering or framing, not general exegetical difficulty.
SECTION A — Chapter-by-Chapter OT/NT Cross-Reference Matrix
Revelation 1 — Prologue and Vision of the Glorified Christ
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 1:1 | Symbolic/Apocalyptic Interpretation | John | Amos 3:7 (God reveals to his servants); Daniel 2:28-29,45 (things that must soon take place) | αποκάλυψη must retain the “unveiling” sense, not journalistic “exposé” (baseline Medium note). |
| Revelation 1:5-6 | Sovereignty of God over History; Church as royal priesthood | Christ; the churches | Exodus 19:6 (kingdom of priests, holy nation); Psalm 89:27,37 (firstborn, faithful witness); Isaiah 55:4 | ἱερεῖς (priests) — reinforce corporate all-believers priesthood, distinct from ordained ιερέας (see 07, ch.1 note). |
| Revelation 1:7 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ | Daniel 7:13 (coming with the clouds); Zechariah 12:10 (they will look on him whom they pierced; every eye will see) | ἔρχεται vocabulary must render consistently across all “coming” texts (1:7; 3:11; 16:15; 22:7,12,17,20) — see Rendering-Consistency Rule 6 below. |
| Revelation 1:8 | Sovereignty of God over History | God (Pantokrator) | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 (I am the first and the last/I am he) | Παντοκράτωρ: keep narrative-sovereignty sense alive alongside its iconographic weight (see 07 ch.1 note). |
| Revelation 1:12-16 | Deity and Glory of Christ | Christ (glorified) | Daniel 7:9 (hair like wool); Daniel 10:5-6 (bronze, fire, brilliance); Ezekiel 1:24, 43:2 (voice like many waters, glory) | δόξα-adjacent imagery; guard against reading purely as static iconography rather than the book’s own dramatic vision. |
| Revelation 1:17-18 | Sovereignty of God over History; Resurrection | Christ | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6 (Alpha/Omega equivalents); Hosea 13:14 (keys of death) | “I am the first and the last, and the living one” — anchor to same divine-identity claim as 21:6/22:13. |

| Revelation 2:17 | New Creation; Assurance | the overcomer | Exodus 16:32-34 (hidden manna preserved); Isaiah 62:2; 65:15 (new name) | καινός (“new name”) — same qualitative-newness gloss required as at 21:1,5 (see Rule 3). |
| Revelation 2:20 | Idolatry/Compromise | Jezebel | 1 Kings 16:31; 18:4,13; 21:25 (Jezebel’s idolatry and persecution of prophets) | Symbolic reuse of a historical name for a local false teacher — frame as typological label, not a claim about the historical Jezebel’s soul. |

| Revelation 3:7 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | Christ | Isaiah 22:22 (key of the house of David) | κλεῖδα Δαυίδ — reuses baseline Δαβίδ (Low); messianic authority over access to God’s kingdom. |
| Revelation 3:9 | Sovereignty of God; Unity of Jews/Gentiles (negative case) | “synagogue of Satan” | Isaiah 45:14; 49:23; 60:14 (nations bowing before Israel, reapplied) | Requires the same historical-contextual framing flagged in 07 (ch.2-3): a specific local conflict, not a statement about Judaism as such — consistent with Romans 9-11’s careful handling in the baseline. |
| Revelation 3:12 | New Creation; New Jerusalem | the overcomer | Ezekiel 48:35 (the city named “The LORD is there”); Isaiah 62:2 (new name) | First occurrence of “new Jerusalem” motif fully developed at 21:2 — keep lexically linked (Rule 4). |
| Revelation 3:14 | Faithful Witness | Christ | Proverbs 8:22-30 (personified Wisdom, “beginning” background, loosely); Isaiah 65:16 (God of truth/Amen) | “the Amen, the faithful and true witness” — direct verbal link to 21:5’s πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί and 19:11; keep πιστός/αληθινός pairing consistent (Rule 9). |

Revelation 5 — The Lamb Who Was Slain
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 5:5 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | Christ | Genesis 49:9-10 (Lion of the tribe of Judah); Isaiah 11:1,10 (Root of David/Jesse) | Lion/Lamb paradox must be preserved intact, not smoothed — see Rule 11. |
| Revelation 5:6 | Worship of the Lamb; Judgment/Vindication | the Lamb | Isaiah 53:7 (led like a lamb to slaughter); Exodus 12:3-13 (Passover lamb); Genesis 22:8,13 (the lamb God will provide) | το Αρνίον — CRITICAL, must not activate the Easter roast-lamb (αρνί) association (see 07/08 full note). |

| Revelation 5:12-13 | Worship of the Lamb; Deity of Christ | the whole creation | Daniel 7:14 (dominion given to the son of man); 1 Chronicles 29:11 (yours is the kingdom, power, glory) | ἄξιος — theological “fitness to receive worship,” not everyday “competent” (see 07). |

| Revelation 6:9-11 | Judgment of the Wicked; Vindication of the Saints | the martyred souls | Genesis 4:10 (Abel’s blood crying out); Psalm 79:5,10 (how long, O Lord?) | ἐκδικέω/ἐκδίκησις — anchor to judicial vindication (δικαιοσύνη), not personal revenge (see 07/08 High-risk note). This cry is answered at Revelation 21:4. |
| Revelation 6:12-14 | Judgment of the Wicked | the sixth seal | Isaiah 34:4 (sky rolled up like a scroll, stars falling); Joel 2:10,31 (sun darkened, moon to blood) | Cosmic-collapse imagery; frame as apocalyptic convention drawn directly from named OT judgment oracles, not a scientific claim. |

| Revelation 7:14-17 | New Heaven and New Earth (anticipatory); Vindication | the great multitude | Isaiah 49:10 (no hunger, no thirst, no scorching heat); Psalm 23:1-2 (shepherd, still waters); Isaiah 25:8 (he will wipe away the tears from all faces) | Isaiah 25:8 is quoted here in seed form and again verbatim in fuller form at 21:4 — REQUIRE identical rendering of “wipe away every tear” at both 7:17 and 21:4 (Rule 12). |
Revelation 8-9 — The Seven Trumpets
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Revelation 8:7 - 9:19 | Sovereignty of God over History | the trumpet judgments | Exodus 7:14-12:30 (the plagues of Egypt: hail/fire, water to blood, darkness, locusts); Joel 1:1-2:11 (locust army as army of judgment) | The Exodus-plague pattern is the controlling OT template for the whole trumpet sequence; note this explicitly for the audience — it grounds the Sovereignty-over-History doctrine in a concrete, previously-enacted precedent. |
| Revelation 9:11 | Judgment of the Wicked | Apollyon/Abaddon | Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11 (Abaddon, place of destruction, paired with Sheol) | Ἀπολλύων — transparent Greek meaning (“Destroyer”); worth noting the Hebrew equivalent (Abaddon) is given alongside it in the text itself (9:11). |

| Revelation 12:5 | Messianic Promise; Return and Reign of Christ | the male child | Psalm 2:7-9 (today I have become your father… rule with an iron scepter); Isaiah 66:7 | Direct verbal reuse of Psalm 2:9’s rod-of-iron formula (also 2:27; 19:15) — Rule 7 applies. |
| Revelation 12:7-9 | Sovereignty of God over History | Michael; the dragon | Daniel 10:13,21; 12:1 (Michael, the great prince, in cosmic conflict); Genesis 3:1,14-15 (the serpent) | δράκων explicitly glossed in the text itself as “the ancient serpent…the Devil and Satan” (12:9) — direct self-interpretation; teach this as the model of how Revelation defines its own symbols. |
| Revelation 12:10-11 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness; Assurance of Victory | the martyrs | Zechariah 3:1-2 (Satan as accuser before the Lord); Job 1:6-11 (the accuser/adversary) | “By the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” — the book’s own definition of “overcoming,” which must govern the reading of ὁ νικῶν throughout (Rule 14; see 21:7). |
| Revelation 12:17 | Perseverance under Persecution | the dragon; the woman’s offspring | Genesis 3:15 (enmity between the serpent and the woman’s seed) | Direct fulfillment-echo of the protoevangelium — a major typological bridge from Genesis 3 to the whole book’s persecution narrative. |
Revelation 13 — The Beast and the Mark
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 13:1-2 | Judgment of the Wicked; Symbolic Interpretation | the beast from the sea | Daniel 7:2-7 (four beasts — lion, bear, leopard — combined into one composite beast) | Deliberate composite of Daniel’s four beasts into one, intensifying Daniel’s pattern; a clear textual signal that this is a symbolic amalgam, not a zoological description. |
| Revelation 13:5 | Perseverance under Persecution | the beast | Daniel 7:8,11,20,25 (“a time, times, and half a time”; boastful words; war on the saints) | Direct numeric/temporal echo from Daniel; teach the shared apocalyptic time-idiom rather than a modern calendrical calculation. |
| Revelation 13:11-12 | Symbolic Interpretation | the second beast/false prophet | Deuteronomy 13:1-3 (false prophets/signs testing loyalty) | Sets up the “false prophet” naming completed explicitly at 16:13. |
| Revelation 13:15-17 | Worship of the Lamb (negative counterpart) | the beast’s image; the mark | Daniel 3:4-6 (compulsory worship of the image, on pain of death) | Direct structural parallel to Daniel 3 (Nebuchadnezzar’s image) — a strong teaching asset for Perseverance under Persecution, since Daniel’s three companions model refusal under identical pressure. |
| Revelation 13:18 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | the number of the beast | (no direct OT citation; gematria convention shared with contemporaneous Jewish/Greco-Roman practice) | See 07/08 full note — explicit textual invitation to symbolic, not flatly literal, reading. |

| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 14:1 | Worship of the Lamb; Assurance | the 144,000 | Psalm 2:6 (Zion, God’s holy hill); Ezekiel 9:4 (sealed on the forehead) | Continuity with ch. 7’s sealed servants. |

| Revelation 14:8 | Judgment of the Wicked | Babylon (anticipatory fall) | Isaiah 21:9; Jeremiah 51:7-8 (Babylon has fallen, has fallen) | First occurrence of the “fallen, fallen” proclamation formula, completed at 18:2. |

| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 15:2-4 | Worship of the Lamb; Sovereignty of God | the victors; the song of Moses and the Lamb | Exodus 15:1-18 (the Song of Moses/Song of the Sea, after the Red Sea deliverance); Psalm 86:9-10; 111:2; Deuteronomy 32:4 | Direct, named quotation-fusion of the Exodus deliverance-song with a “new,” Lamb-centered fulfillment — a major typological bridge (Exodus deliverance → the Lamb’s greater deliverance). |
| Revelation 15:8 | Sovereignty of God over History | the temple filled with smoke | Exodus 40:34-35 (the glory-cloud fills the tabernacle); 1 Kings 8:10-11 (glory fills Solomon’s temple) | δόξα-adjacent imagery; the temple filling with glory here anticipates its removal in 21:22 (no temple needed, because God’s presence is now unmediated everywhere). |

| Revelation 17:9,12 | Symbolic Interpretation | the seven heads, ten horns | Daniel 7:7,20,24 (the beast’s horns as kings/kingdoms) | Daniel provides the direct interpretive key the text itself uses (17:9-14 is Revelation’s own explanatory decoding of its symbol) — a model passage for teaching symbolic method. |
| Revelation 17:14 | Return and Reign of Christ; Effectual Calling | Christ; “the called, chosen, and faithful” | Deuteronomy 10:17 (God of gods, Lord of lords); Daniel 2:47 | κλητοὶ καὶ ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ πιστοί — DIRECT verbal link to baseline Romans doctrines of Divine Calling (κλήση, Critical) and Election (εκλογή, High); this is the single clearest point of terminological overlap between the Romans and Revelation curricula (see Rule 16). |

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 18:2 | Judgment of the Wicked | Babylon | Isaiah 21:9; Jeremiah 50:2; 51:8 (Babylon has fallen, has fallen) | Completes the anticipatory proclamation begun at 14:8 — keep the “fallen, fallen” repetition intact in Greek, as it is in the source Isaiah/Jeremiah texts and in the NT Greek itself. |
| Revelation 18:4 | Perseverance under Persecution | God’s people | Jeremiah 51:45 (“Come out of her, my people”); Genesis 19:15-17 (flee Sodom); Isaiah 52:11 | Direct quotation of Jeremiah’s Babylon-exodus command — models active, costly separation from systemic evil, applied to the church’s contemporary situation. |

| Revelation 19:2 | Judgment of the Wicked; Vindication | God | Deuteronomy 32:43 (avenge the blood of his servants); 2 Kings 9:7 | εκδίκησις — same judicial-vindication anchoring required as at 6:10 (Rule “avenge/vindicate,” 08 #20). |
| Revelation 19:7-9 | Church as Bride of Christ | the Bride; wedding guests | Isaiah 61:10; 62:5 (bridegroom/bride imagery for God and his people); Hosea 2:19-20 (betrothal covenant renewal) | ὁ γάμος τοῦ ἀρνίου — keep corporate framing (whole Church, not an individual believer’s private romance) per 07/08 notes. |
| Revelation 19:11-13 | Sovereignty of God; Deity of Christ | Christ, the rider | Isaiah 63:1-3 (blood-stained garments, treading judgment alone); John 1:1,14 (the Word) | ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ — CRITICAL, direct Johannine title; must be anchored to the Logos-Christology, not read as “message” (see 08 #8). |
| Revelation 19:15 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ | Psalm 2:9 (rod of iron); Isaiah 63:1-3 (winepress) | ῥάβδος σιδηρᾶ — third occurrence, same Rule 7. |
| Revelation 19:16 | Sovereignty of God over History; Return and Reign | Christ | Deuteronomy 10:17; Daniel 2:47 (God of gods, Lord of lords) | βασιλεύς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίων — CRITICAL per baseline Κύριος; superlative intensification, do not soften. |
| Revelation 19:17-18 | Judgment of the Wicked | carrion birds | Ezekiel 39:17-20 (a gruesome sacrificial “supper” of birds and beasts feeding on the defeated) | Deliberate, ironic dark mirror of the “marriage supper” just described (19:9) — teach the intentional juxtaposition. |
| Revelation 19:20 | Judgment of the Wicked | the beast, false prophet | Daniel 7:11 (the beast’s body destroyed, given to the burning flame) | λίμνη τοῦ πυρός — first full occurrence; see High-risk note at 21:8. |
Revelation 20 — The Millennium and the Great White Throne
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 20:1-3 | Sovereignty of God over History | Satan, bound | Isaiah 24:21-22 (the host of heaven and kings of the earth shut up, punished after many days) | δέω/ἔδησεν — a bounded, temporary, divinely-permitted restraint, not final defeat (completed at 20:10). |
| Revelation 20:4-6 | Return and Reign of Christ; Resurrection | the martyrs, reigning | Daniel 7:9,22,27 (thrones, judgment given, the saints receive the kingdom) | “The first resurrection” — reuses baseline ανάσταση (CRITICAL); the sequence/scope distinction (first/second) is not a claim about repeated cycles — see 07/08 note. |
| Revelation 20:7-9 | Judgment of the Wicked; Sovereignty of God | Gog and Magog | Ezekiel 38-39 (Gog, from the land of Magog, final assault on God’s people, decisively defeated) | Direct, named typological reuse of Ezekiel’s Gog-Magog oracle as the pattern for history’s final rebellion — teach as typological escalation, not identical repetition of Ezekiel’s specific historical referent. |
| Revelation 20:11-13 | Judgment of the Wicked; Sovereignty of God | the dead, judged | Daniel 7:9-10 (thrones set up, books opened); Daniel 12:1-2 (names in the book, some to everlasting life, some to shame) | “The great white throne” — composite of already-established θρόνος vocabulary; the books-opened imagery directly modeled on Daniel. |
| Revelation 20:14-15 | Judgment of the Wicked | death, Hades, the unrepentant | (see Genesis 19:24 at 14:10; Isaiah 66:24) | “The second death” — CRITICAL, second-to-last of four occurrences (2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8); require identical rendering (Rule 17). |
Revelation 21:1-8 — Core Passage
Full verse-by-verse OT/NT cross-references are given in 07_semantic_analysis.md Section A. Summary of the passage’s OT anchors:
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 21:1 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Isaiah 65:17; 66:22 (I will create new heavens and a new earth); Genesis 1:1 (totality formula: heaven/earth) | καινός must retain qualitative “new-in-kind” sense directly inherited from Isaiah’s own שָׂמַיִם חֲדָשִׁים / LXX οὐρανὸς καινός — a rare case where the Hebrew source, the LXX rendering, and the NT’s own vocabulary are all recoverable in a single continuous Greek line for this audience. |
| Revelation 21:2 | New Jerusalem; Church as Bride | — | Isaiah 52:1 (Jerusalem, the holy city); Ezekiel 40-48 (the visionary new temple-city); Isaiah 61:10; 62:5 (bridal imagery) | See 07 v.2 notes (πόλιν τὴν ἁγίαν; νύμφη). |
| Revelation 21:3 | Sovereignty of God; New Heaven and New Earth | — | Exodus 25:8; 29:45 (I will dwell among them); Ezekiel 37:27 (my dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, they will be my people); Leviticus 26:11-12 | σκηνή/σκηνώσει — direct verbal echo of the LXX’s own σκηνή vocabulary in Exodus/Ezekiel, and of John 1:14’s ἐσκήνωσεν; a three-way canonical convergence uniquely visible to a Greek reader. |
| Revelation 21:4 | New Heaven and New Earth; Vindication | — | Isaiah 25:8 (he will wipe away the tears from all faces); Isaiah 65:19 (weeping and crying heard no more) | Direct, near-verbatim quotation; require identical rendering to the earlier partial quotation at 7:17 (Rule 12). |
| Revelation 21:5 | Sovereignty of God; New Creation | — | Isaiah 43:19 (I am doing a new thing); Isaiah 55:11 (my word…will accomplish what I desire) | “I make all things new” — climactic statement of the καινός motif; “faithful and true” (πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί) echoes 3:14; 19:11. |
| Revelation 21:6 | Sovereignty of God; Assurance of Victory | — | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 (Alpha/Omega equivalents); Isaiah 55:1 (come, buy wine and milk without cost); Psalm 36:9 (fountain of life) | δωρεάν — CRITICAL, context-reversed from the Galatians 2:21 forbidden sense (Rule 18); also echoes Isaiah 55:1’s own gratuitous-invitation language. |
| Revelation 21:7 | Assurance of Final Victory; Adoption | — | 2 Samuel 7:14 (I will be his father, and he will be my son — the Davidic covenant formula); Psalm 89:26-27 | Direct quotation of the Davidic sonship-covenant formula, now extended to every overcomer — a major typological bridge from the Davidic Covenant doctrine to universal adoption (baseline υιοθεσία). |
| Revelation 21:8 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Genesis 19:24 (fire and sulfur/brimstone); Deuteronomy 29:19-20 (curses on covenant-breakers); the vice-catalogue form echoes Galatians 5:19-21’s works of the flesh | See Rendering-Consistency Rule 19 below — direct cross-curriculum vice-list parallel with Galatians. |
Revelation 21:9-27 — The New Jerusalem Described
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 21:10-14 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Ezekiel 40:2 (in visions…he took me to a very high mountain); Ezekiel 48:30-35 (gates named for the tribes) | Structural template directly borrowed from Ezekiel’s temple-city vision; twelve gates/foundations unify OT (tribes) and NT (apostles) peoples of God — direct continuity with Romans 11:17-24’s olive-tree unity image. |
| Revelation 21:16-21 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Ezekiel 48:16-35 (measured city dimensions); Isaiah 54:11-12 (foundations of sapphires, gates of jewels) | Opulent building-material vocabulary drawn directly from Isaiah 54’s restoration oracle. |
| Revelation 21:22-23 | Sovereignty of God; Worship | — | Isaiah 60:19-20 (the Lord will be your everlasting light; sun and moon no longer needed); Ezekiel 48:35 | ναός (“no temple”) — see 07/08 High-risk note; the removal of a mediating structure, not a devaluation of worship. |
| Revelation 21:24-26 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles | the nations | Isaiah 60:3,5,11 (nations come to your light; kings bring their wealth; gates always open) | ἔθνη — reuses baseline Medium-risk term; direct fulfillment of Isaiah 60’s Zion-glorification oracle, and of Romans 15:8-12’s catena of Gentile-inclusion texts. |
| Revelation 21:27 | Judgment of the Wicked; Assurance | — | Isaiah 52:1 (the uncircumcised and unclean will not enter); Ezekiel 44:9 | Continuity with the book-of-life motif (3:5; 20:12,15). |
Revelation 22 — The River of Life and the Epilogue
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 22:1-2 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Genesis 2:9-10 (the tree of life; the river flowing out of Eden); Ezekiel 47:1-12 (river flowing from the temple, trees for healing on both banks); Zechariah 14:8 | Direct, deliberate bracketing of the whole canon: the garden of Genesis 2 restored and surpassed — the single clearest Genesis-to-Revelation inclusio in Scripture. Teach explicitly as the closing of the book’s frame opened at 21:1 and, canonically, at Genesis 1-3. |
| Revelation 22:3 | New Heaven and New Earth; Redemption from the Curse | — | Genesis 3:17-19 (the curse on the ground); Zechariah 14:11 (no more curse) | κατάρα — reuses baseline Medium-risk term from the Galatians curriculum (Redemption from the Curse doctrine, Galatians 3:10-13); direct thematic resolution — the curse introduced in Genesis 3 and borne by Christ per Galatians 3:13 is here finally and permanently lifted. |
| Revelation 22:3-4 | Worship of the Lamb | — | Exodus 33:20-23 (no one may see God’s face and live — now reversed); Psalm 17:15 | λατρεύω / “see his face” — see 07/08 High-risk λατρεία note; the ultimate unmediated-presence fulfillment of the σκηνή theme from 21:3. |
| Revelation 22:5 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Isaiah 60:19; Zechariah 14:7 (continuous day, no night) | Continuity with 21:23,25. |
| Revelation 22:12 | Return and Reign of Christ; Judgment | Christ | Isaiah 40:10; 62:11 (behold, his reward is with him); Proverbs 24:12 | ἔρχομαι vocabulary — Rule 6. |
| Revelation 22:13 | Sovereignty of God over History | Christ | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 | Alpha/Omega — third and final occurrence (1:8; 21:6; 22:13); see 08 #6, a zero-gap Greek asset. |
| Revelation 22:14-15 | Assurance of Final Victory; Judgment | — | Genesis 3:22-24 (access to the tree of life barred, now restored); (vice list echoes 21:8 and Galatians 5:19-21) | φαρμακεία recurs (final, fourth occurrence) — Rule 13 applies at every remaining instance. |
| Revelation 22:16 | Messianic Promise | Christ | Numbers 24:17 (the star out of Jacob); Isaiah 11:1,10 (root/branch of David) | “Root and offspring of David…the morning star” — direct messianic-title convergence, reusing baseline Δαβίδ (Low). |
| Revelation 22:17 | Church as Bride of Christ; Assurance | the Spirit and the Bride | Isaiah 55:1 (come, all who are thirsty) | δωρεάν — second correct/required occurrence, per Rule 18; νύμφη corporate sense per Rule (bride, see below). |
| Revelation 22:18-19 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation; Scripture’s authority | — | Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32 (do not add to or take away from the word); Proverbs 30:5-6 | Direct verbal borrowing of the Deuteronomic canon-formula, applied by Revelation to itself — grounds the doctrine of the book’s (and by extension Scripture’s) inspired, closed authority. |
| Revelation 22:20-21 | Return and Reign of Christ; Grace | Christ | (closing benediction form parallels the Pauline epistolary grace-benediction, e.g. Romans 16:20; Galatians 6:18) | “Ἀμήν, ἔρχου, Κύριε Ἰησοῦ” and the closing χάρις-benediction directly parallel the Romans/Galatians epistolary close — see Rule 20 below. |
SECTION B — Messianic References and Typology (Book-Wide Summary)
| Messianic Title/Type | Revelation References | OT Root Text | Typological Pattern | Rendering Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lion of the tribe of Judah | 5:5 | Genesis 49:9-10 | Royal/tribal messianic identity | Preserve juxtaposition with “Lamb” (5:6) intact — the paradox is the point. |
| Root/Branch of David | 5:5; 22:16 | Isaiah 11:1,10; Jeremiah 23:5 | Davidic royal lineage fulfilled | Reuses baseline σπέρμα Δαβίδ conceptual field from Romans 1:3. |
| The Lamb (slain, worthy) | ~28 occurrences, chs. 5-22 | Genesis 22:8,13; Exodus 12:3-13; Isaiah 53:7 | Passover/sacrificial substitution; Suffering Servant | CRITICAL — see full note, 07/08. |
| Son of Man | 1:13 | Daniel 7:13 | Exalted, judging, yet genuinely human figure | Distinct from, complementary to, baseline “Υιός του Θεού.” |
| The Word (Logos) | 19:13 | (background: Genesis 1:3 creative word; fulfilled John 1:1,14) | Eternal, creative, self-revealing divine speech incarnate | CRITICAL — anchor to Johannine Logos-Christology. |
| Key of David | 3:7 | Isaiah 22:22 | Messianic authority over access to the kingdom | Reuses baseline Δαβίδ. |
| Morning Star | 2:28; 22:16 | Numbers 24:17 | Messianic star-prophecy (Balaam’s oracle) | Consistent rendering across both occurrences required. |
| Rider on the White Horse / King of kings | 19:11-16 | Psalm 2:6-9; Isaiah 63:1-6; Daniel 7:13-14 | Divine warrior-king, judge and ruler | CRITICAL per baseline Κύριος. |
| The Bridegroom | 19:7-9; 21:2,9; 22:17 (implicit) | Isaiah 62:5; Hosea 2:19-20; Song of Songs (background) | Covenant marriage between God and his people, fulfilled in Christ and the Church | Corporate framing required — see Rule 21. |
| Alpha and Omega / First and Last | 1:8,17; 21:6; 22:13 | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 | Comprehensive divine sovereignty over history, applied to both God and Christ | Zero-gap Greek asset; foreground for teaching Sovereignty of God over History and Deity of Christ together. |
| New Adam / restored Eden | 22:1-5 (implicit) | Genesis 1-3 | The whole canon’s protological-eschatological bracket | Direct inclusio; see Section A, Revelation 22:1-2 note. |
SECTION C — Parallels to Other Curricula in this Language (Romans, Galatians)
| Shared Term/Theme | Romans/Galatians Locus | Revelation Locus | Nature of the Parallel | Rendering-Consistency Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| χάρις (grace) | Romans 3:24; 5:2,15-17,20-21; 11:5-6; Galatians throughout | Revelation 1:4; 22:21 | Both curricula open/close with the same epistolary grace-benediction convention. | Reuse baseline χάρη exactly; anchor against secular “charm/pardon” senses in both books identically. |
| πίστις/πιστός (faith/faithful) | Romans 1:17; 3:22-28; 4; 5:1-2; 10:9-10,17 | Revelation 2:10,13; 14:12; 17:14; 21:5,8; 19:11 | Revelation extends “faith” into “faithful witness unto death” and “faithful” as a descriptor of the message’s/Christ’s own reliability. | Reuse baseline πίστη exactly; explicitly distinguish adjectival “reliable/true” sense (21:5; 19:11) from personal-trust sense (21:8) — see 08 #17. |
| δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) | Romans 1:17; 3:21-26; 4; 10:3-10 | Revelation 19:11; 22:11 | Christ’s righteous judgment (19:11) is the consummation of the righteousness the believer already possesses by faith (Romans). | Reuse baseline δικαιοσύνη exactly; do not let Revelation’s judicial context collapse the forensic-imputation sense established in Romans 4. |
| κλῆσις/κλητός (calling) | Romans 1:1,6-7; 8:28-30; 9:11-12 | Revelation 17:14 (κλητοὶ καὶ ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ πιστοί) | Direct verbal overlap — the identical triad vocabulary (called/chosen/faithful) used in Romans for God’s sovereign call appears intact in Revelation. | CRITICAL — reuse baseline κλήση/κλητός exactly; this is the strongest direct terminological bridge between the two curricula and should be taught as such. |
| ἐκλογή (election) | Romans 9-11 | Revelation 17:14 | See above; also conceptually present in the 144,000/sealed-servants motif (chs. 7, 14) and “written in the book of life” (13:8; 17:8; 20:15; 21:27). | Reuse baseline εκλογή exactly; anchor against the political “election/voting” sense in both curricula. |
| υιοθεσία (adoption)/sonship | Romans 8:15-17,23; 9:4 | Revelation 21:7 (“he will be my son”) | Direct extension of the Davidic-covenant sonship formula (2 Samuel 7:14, also behind Romans 1:3-4) to every overcomer. | Reuse baseline υιοθεσία conceptually; keep clearly distinct from Christ’s unique eternal Sonship (baseline “Υιός του Θεού,” Critical) — reinforced at both loci. |
| σωτηρία (salvation) | Romans 1:16; 10:1,10; 11:11; 13:11 | Revelation 7:10; 12:10; 19:1 | Both curricula use the identical NT/Modern Greek word; Revelation supplies the consummating heavenly-worship scenes celebrating what Romans argues doctrinally. | Reuse baseline σωτηρία exactly; guard against theosis-only reading in both curricula per the baseline note. |
| ἀνάστασις (resurrection) | Romans 6:4-5; 8:11 | Revelation 20:5-6 (“the first resurrection”) | Romans grounds resurrection in union with Christ’s own resurrection; Revelation extends it into the eschatological sequence of ch. 20. | Reuse baseline ανάσταση exactly; preserve bodily/historical/non-cyclical sense in both; treat the “first/second” language as sequence, not reincarnation. |
| διαθήκη (covenant) | Romans 9:4; 11:27 | Revelation 11:19 (ark of the covenant) | Both curricula must resist the dominant Modern Greek “last will” sense. | Reuse baseline διαθήκη exactly. |
| ελευθερία (freedom) | Galatians 5:1,13 | Revelation 21:7; 22:3 (freedom from the curse, full inheritance) | Galatians argues freedom from law-as-justification; Revelation pictures its final, cosmic completion (no more curse, full sonship/inheritance). | Reuse baseline ελευθερία exactly; both curricula must fence against the Greek national-political “liberation” default reading. |
| κατάρα (curse) | Galatians 3:10-13 | Revelation 22:3 | Direct thematic resolution: the curse Christ became (Galatians 3:13) is here finally and permanently lifted for the redeemed cosmos. | Reuse baseline κατάρα exactly — this is one of the clearest doctrinal completions across the two curricula and should be taught as such. |
| καινή κτίσις (new creation) | Galatians 6:15 | Revelation 21:1,5 | Galatians 6:15 states the principle (“neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters, but new creation”); Revelation 21 shows its full, cosmic-scale enactment. | Reuse baseline καινή δημιουργία/καινή κτίσις approach exactly; same καινός-vs-νέος qualitative gloss required in both. |
| κληρονόμος/κληρονομέω (heir/inherit) | Galatians 3:29; 4:1,7 | Revelation 21:7 | Galatians establishes believers as Abraham’s heirs by faith; Revelation names the inheritance received (21:1-8’s whole promised reality). | Reuse baseline κληρονόμος root exactly. |
| δωρεάν (freely / in vain) | Galatians 2:21 (FORBIDDEN — “in vain”) | Revelation 21:6; 22:17 (REQUIRED — “freely, without cost”) | The identical Greek word carries opposite required renderings depending on curriculum and verse. | See Rule 18 below — this is the single most important cross-curriculum disambiguation rule in the whole Language Package. |
| φαρμακεία (sorcery) | Galatians 5:20 (FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: never “pharmacy”) | Revelation 9:21; 18:23; 21:8; 22:15 | Identical forbidden-substitution risk recurs four times across Revelation alone, in addition to its one Galatians occurrence. | Reuse baseline μαγεία/μαγγανεία rendering exactly at all five total occurrences across both curricula — see Rule 13. |
| σάρξ/ἔργα τῆς σαρκός (works of the flesh) vice-list | Galatians 5:19-21 | Revelation 21:8; 22:15 | Structurally parallel vice-catalogues (though Revelation’s list emphasizes covenant-breaking/idolatry categories more than Galatians’ relational-sin emphasis). | No shared single term to enforce, but teach the two lists side-by-side as complementary NT vice-catalogue conventions. |
| Ισραήλ (Israel) | Romans 9-11 | Revelation 7:4; 21:12 (twelve tribes on the gates) | Romans 9-11 argues for God’s ongoing faithfulness to Israel within a Jew-Gentile unified people; Revelation pictures the twelve tribes structurally integrated into the New Jerusalem alongside the twelve apostles. | Reuse baseline Ισραήλ exactly; guard against modern-nation-state readings in both curricula. |
| ἔθνη (nations/Gentiles) | Romans 9-11; 15:8-12 | Revelation 5:9; 7:9; 21:24-26; 22:2 | Romans argues doctrinally for Jew-Gentile unity in Christ; Revelation shows its consummated, worshiping, healed reality. | Reuse baseline έθνη exactly. |
| ἀγοράζω/λύτρωσις (redeem/purchase) | Galatians 3:13; 4:5 (baseline λυτρώνω/απολύτρωση, avoiding εξαγοράζω’s “bribery” drift) | Revelation 5:9 (“you purchased them for God”) | Direct conceptual overlap — Christ’s blood as the price of redemption. | Use the same λύτρωση/απολύτρωση-family vocabulary established in the baseline for Galatians 3:13; 4:5, avoiding any “bribery/buyout” association. |
| Epistolary grace-and-peace framing | Romans 1:7; 16:20; Galatians 1:3; 6:18 | Revelation 1:4-5; 22:21 | Revelation is formally structured as a circular letter (1:4-5) and closes with the same grace-benediction convention used throughout Paul’s letters. | Keep the salutation/benediction register and vocabulary consistent with the established Romans/Galatians epistolary opening/closing conventions. |
SECTION D — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Cross-Curriculum Terms
The following numbered rules must be loaded into Phase 2 tooling alongside the baseline translation_memory.json and this book’s own term entries. They govern cases where a single Greek word or phrase recurs across multiple passages (within Revelation, or across Revelation/Romans/Galatians) and must be rendered identically, or — in one deliberately flagged exception — with context-dependent opposite readings.
- καινός (new-in-kind) — Every occurrence (2:17; 3:12; 5:9; 21:1,2,5) must carry the qualitative “new-in-kind” gloss distinguished from νέος (“new-in-time”), per the baseline καινή δημιουργία entry. Apply identically whether the referent is a song, a name, a city, or the cosmos itself.
- θρόνος (throne) — Render identically at every occurrence across chs. 1, 4-5, 20-22; do not vary the word even where English translations might use “seat” or “dais.”
- New Jerusalem motif — Keep 3:12 and 21:2 lexically linked (both “Ιερουσαλήμ καινή”); do not introduce a synonym at either location.
- (reserved — merged into Rule 1 and Rule 3 above.)
- (reserved.)
- ἔρχομαι/ἐρχόμενος (the “coming” of Christ) — Render consistently across 1:7; 3:11; 16:15; 22:7,12,17,20 using the same Greek verb family; do not substitute a synonym for variety, and do not import the baseline’s separate παρουσία vocabulary (not used in Revelation itself).
- ῥάβδος σιδηρᾶ (rod of iron) — Identical rendering required at 2:27; 12:5; 19:15 (all quoting Psalm 2:9).
- βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς (book of life) — Identical rendering required at 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12,15; 21:27.
- πιστός καὶ ἀληθινός (faithful and true) — Identical rendering required at 3:14; 19:11; 21:5, all describing Christ, God, or God’s own words with the same pairing.
- (merged into Rule 2.)
- Lion/Lamb juxtaposition (5:5-6) — Preserve the deliberate paradox intact; do not smooth, explain away, or reorder the sequence in translation.
- “Wipe away every tear” (Isaiah 25:8 quotation) — Identical rendering required at 7:17 and 21:4.
- φαρμακεία (sorcery) — FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION — Never render with any “pharmacy” association at any of the five total occurrences across both curricula (Galatians 5:20; Revelation 9:21; 18:23; 21:8; 22:15). Always μαγεία/μαγγανεία.
- ὁ νικῶν (the overcomer) — Every occurrence (2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,12,21; 21:7) must be read through the book’s own definition given at 12:11 (“by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony”), not worldly-conquest connotations.
- Γέγονεν/Γέγοναν (“it is done”) — Preserve the perfect-tense settled-completion force identically at 16:17 (judgment’s completion) and 21:6 (renewal’s completion); the same grammatical form carries opposite emotional valence by context, which the translation’s aspect-preservation (not word-choice) must communicate.
- κλητοὶ καὶ ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ πιστοί (called, chosen, and faithful, 17:14) — Render using the exact baseline-established terms for κλήση (calling) and εκλογή (election); flag every occurrence for the same human-theologian review routing the baseline requires for those two Critical/High terms in Romans.
- ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος (the second death) — Identical rendering required at 2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8.
- δωρεάν — CONTEXT-REVERSED RULE — FORBIDDEN at Galatians 2:21 (“in vain”; must render μάταια/χωρίς λόγο). REQUIRED/CORRECT at Revelation 21:6 and 22:17 (“freely, without cost” — the ordinary Modern Greek sense is exactly intended here). Phase 2 tooling must flag this term with its governing verse reference every time, since the correct rule inverts depending on location.
- Vice-catalogue parallel (Galatians 5:19-21 / Revelation 21:8; 22:15) — No single shared Greek term requires forced identical rendering, but φαρμακεία (Rule 13) and πόρνος-family terms should be rendered consistently with their baseline Galatians equivalents where the same underlying Greek word recurs.
- Epistolary grace-benediction convention (1:4-5; 22:21, paralleling Romans 16:20; Galatians 6:18) — Maintain the same formal register and χάρη-anchoring established in the baseline for the opening/closing grace formulas.
- νύμφη (bride) — corporate-referent rule — At every occurrence (19:7; 21:2,9; 22:17) render with a note anchoring the image to the whole Church corporately, never to an individual believer’s private union with Christ.
