Ephesians — russian

TRI knowledge bundle for Ephesians (russian).

Executive Summary

Executive Summary — Ephesians (English → Russian)

Why it matters

Ephesians extends the Romans Language Package into new, higher-collision territory. Where Romans’ risk concentrated on a small cluster of soteriological terms (благодать, оправдание, спасение), Ephesians spreads comparable risk across election/predestination vocabulary, ecclesial-body vocabulary, and — critically — a set of terms that directly collide with Russian Orthodox sacramental and mystical vocabulary in ways Romans never required: тайна/Таинство (mystery/Sacrament), запечатление/Chrismation (sealing), тело/Тело Христово (body/Eucharist), and энергия (the forbidden Palamite-theology cognate for ἐνέργεια). Getting this curriculum wrong risks either quietly resolving Ephesians’ sharpest claims into Orthodox theological categories the source text does not intend, or landing as an unintended polemic against Orthodoxy. Getting it right lets the curriculum speak clearly to Evangelical/Protestant congregations, culturally Orthodox but non-practicing readers, and secular readers alike.

Key findings

  • 27 total doctrines identified across all 6 chapters (full-book coverage confirmed; no chapter contributes zero load-bearing vocabulary) — 7 Critical, 13 High, 6 Medium, 1 Low.
  • 20 doctrines (all Critical + all High) require mandatory human theologian review; 6 Medium doctrines require native speaker review; 1 Low doctrine (Thanksgiving and Prayer) is automated-review only.
  • At the term level, the Ephesians-specific term registry adds 44 Critical/High-risk terms (11 Critical, 33 High) to the translation memory, on top of every relevant baseline Romans term reused exactly.
  • The single highest-priority new risk class, absent from the Romans baseline entirely, is direct lexical collision with named Orthodox sacramental/mystical vocabulary: тайна (mystery) vs. Таинство (the seven Sacraments, especially acute at Еф. 5:32 where marriage itself is a Sacrament); запечатление (sealed) vs. Chrismation’s own liturgical “seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit” language; тело (body) vs. Тело Христово (the Eucharist); and the absolute forbidden substitution of энергия for ἐνέργεια (Palamite uncreated divine energies).
  • The core passage (Еф. 2:1-10) contains the letter’s single sharpest East-West doctrinal fault line: дела (works) at 2:9, where the ground-vs-fruit distinction (excluded as ground, v.9; affirmed as fruit, v.10) must be stated explicitly every time to avoid silently resolving Reformation/Orthodox synergism tension in either direction.
  • предопределение (predestination, Еф. 1:5,11) is a genuine conceptual-category gap, not a vocabulary gap: the Russian word exists, but Orthodox soteriology has no developed doctrinal slot to receive it, requiring explicit pastoral framing at every occurrence.
  • Historically weighted doctrines carry sensitivity beyond lexical accuracy: Unity of Jews and Gentiles (Еф. 2:11-22, antisemitism history) and Household Codes: Masters and Bondservants (Еф. 6:5-9, serfdom/Gulag history) both require explicit historical-distancing exposition, not just correct vocabulary.

Risks

  • Critical: Silently resolving благодать/дела/спасение into an unqualified synergistic-theosis reading, or the reverse (an unqualified polemic against synergism), in the core passage.
  • Critical: тайна defaulting to Таинство without correction, especially at 5:32 (marriage as Sacrament in Orthodoxy).
  • Critical: ἐνέργεια rendered энергия anywhere in the letter (1:19; 3:7,16,20; 4:16), importing Palamite theology into a plain statement about God’s power.
  • High: единство read as advocacy for institutional ecumenism (a live, officially suspect category in Russian Orthodox discourse) rather than Spirit-given unity to be maintained.
  • High: повиноваться/глава (household code) taught with wifely submission emphasized and the husband’s self-sacrificial-love standard (5:25) under-taught, reinforcing existing patriarchal cultural defaults rather than correcting them.
  • High: раб (6:5-9) read as either endorsing ancient slavery or as an embarrassing irrelevance, absent explicit serfdom/Gulag historical framing.
  • Medium: премудрость inviting an unintended Софиология association; евангелист and пастор/пастырь causing institutional-signal confusion in ministry-gifts teaching.

Opportunities

  • Ephesians can draw on genuine Orthodox devotional assets the Romans baseline could not: дерзновение (boldness in prayer) is an established shared devotional term; “Невидимая брань” (Unseen Warfare, the Philokalic tradition) gives the armor-of-God metaphor unusually strong positive cultural resonance in Russian spirituality; домостроительство (stewardship) overlaps positively with Orthodox “Divine Economy” language.
  • The letter’s dense predestination and adoption/inheritance vocabulary is an opportunity to pastorally reframe судьба-driven Russian fatalism with a personal, loving, sovereign God — provided the framing is explicit rather than assumed.
  • The household-code and spiritual-warfare sections offer a chance to model measured cultural engagement: neither dismissing Russian historical memory (WWII, serfdom) nor being captured by it, but naming it directly and moving through it to the text’s own point.
  1. Load assets/translation_memory.json (Ephesians) and assets/bible_term_registry.json (Ephesians) alongside the Romans baseline for every Phase 2 segment; never translate Ephesians against the Romans files alone.
  2. Route all 20 Critical/High doctrines and all 44 Critical/High terms to mandatory human theologian review before Phase 2 output is accepted, per analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md’s escalation rules.
  3. Attach the five Ephesians-specific forbidden-substitution checks (энергия, unglossed тайна, unglossed запечатление, unglossed тело, диакон-for-3:7) to automated Phase 2 validation before any segment is marked approved.
  4. Require explicit ground-vs-fruit exposition wherever дела (2:9-10) occurs, and explicit historical-distancing exposition wherever раб (6:5-9) occurs, as a non-negotiable pairing with the term itself, not an optional teaching-text enhancement.
  5. Confirm cross-curriculum consistency checks are running for every term shared with Romans (благодать, спасение, воскресение, усыновление, вера, праведность) so learners moving between the two curricula encounter identical vocabulary.
