Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — Matthew 1–28 (Russian)

Purpose

This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the Matthew curriculum, covering every chapter of the book from first to last, and is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (same 32 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing). Matthew 5:1-12 (the Beatitudes) is the curriculum’s theological anchor, not its scope boundary: every other chapter is analyzed below and, where a chapter contributes no new load-bearing doctrine or term, that fact is stated explicitly rather than silently omitted. This document extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans Language Package.

Russian’s doctrinal risk profile for Matthew inherits the baseline’s two axes — (1) East-West divergence between Orthodox synergism/theosis/sacramentalism and Reformation forensic/congregational categories, and (2) post-Soviet secularization flattening religious vocabulary into folk-idiom or cultural-heritage registers — and adds a third axis specific to this book: direct collision between ordinary New Testament vocabulary and Russian Orthodoxy’s own technical devotional/liturgical vocabulary (Пасха, Новый Завет, предание, разрешать, “царствие небесное” as a funeral idiom). This third axis drives most of Matthew’s Critical-tier assignments.

Part A — Doctrine Matrix

#DoctrineRiskKey Matthew PassagesTranslation Risk SummaryReview Routing
1The Kingdom of HeavenCritical3:2; 4:17; 5:3,10; 13:1-52; 18:1-4; 19:14; 25:1-46Царство Небесное must be taught as synonymous with, not competing against, Царство Божие (baseline reuse, 12:28; 19:24; 21:31,43) used elsewhere in the same book. The funeral idiom “царствие ему небесное” primes readers toward an exclusively future, otherworldly reading rather than God’s present, in-breaking reign.Human theologian
2Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of DavidHigh1:1-17; 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 16:16; 20:30-31; 21:9,15; 22:41-46Христос functions as Jesus’ effective surname in casual Russian usage; Сын Давидов is archaic-register and easily heard as decorative rather than covenant-substantive. The genealogy (1:2-17) needs explicit unpacking for readers with limited OT narrative literacy.Human theologian
3Fulfillment of Old Testament ProphecyMedium1:22-23; 2:15,17,23; 4:14; 8:17; 12:17,39-40; 13:35; 21:4-5; 24:15; 27:9Ten recurrences of the fulfillment formula risk being heard as generic religious-literary allusion rather than a specific, historically anchored promise, absent sustained OT background teaching.Native speaker review
4The Authority of Jesus’ TeachingHigh7:28-29; 8:9; 17:5; 21:23-27; 28:18власть carries heavy imperial/Soviet institutional-power connotations, generally suspicious in popular usage; Jesus’ personal, moral, divine authority must be actively distinguished from state power at every occurrence, not only 7:28-29.Human theologian
5Righteousness Exceeding the PhariseesCritical5:6,10,20,48; 6:1-18; 15:1-20; 23:1-36The Synodal text renders identical Greek δικαιοσύνη as правда (5:6, 5:10) but праведность (5:20 — the doctrine’s own naming verse), forking the baseline’s single-term policy. Must be taught explicitly as one Greek concept split across two Russian words; правда also carries its own “mere truth/fairness” false-friend risk.Human theologian
6The Church and Church DisciplineCritical16:18-19; 18:6-10,15-2016:18 is the historic proof-text for competing papal, sacramental-clergy, and congregational readings of церковь; “разрешать” (16:19; 18:18) collides directly with the Orthodox technical term for priestly sacramental absolution (разрешительная молитва). Curriculum must state its own position on both церковь and the keys explicitly.Human theologian
7The Great CommissionHigh28:16-20Established Synodal “научите все народы” under-translates the causative “make disciples of” sense of μαθητεύσατε, risking a mere information-transfer reading. The accompanying Trinitarian baptismal formula collides with the Critical baptism doctrine and must be rendered verbatim-consistently across all documents.Human theologian
8Judgment and the End of the AgeHigh13:36-43,47-50; 24:1-51; 25:1-46Сын Человеческий risks flattening into “a human being,” losing its exalted Danielic apocalyptic-judge sense. 25:46’s strict grammatical parallel (identical вечный/вечная for both punishment and life) must be preserved exactly with no asymmetric softening.Human theologian
9Discipleship and the Cost of Following JesusHigh4:18-22; 8:18-22; 10:34-39; 16:24-26; 19:16-30The cross’s cultural ubiquity in ordinary Russian religious/cultural life (jewelry, crossing oneself, gravesites) risks flattening “taking up one’s cross” into symbol-wearing rather than costly, potentially life-threatening self-denial.Human theologian
10The Blessedness of Kingdom Citizens (Beatitudes) — core passageHigh5:1-12блаженны carries genuine positive liturgical resonance but risks a colloquial “simple-minded” reading or narrow association with the canonized юродивый (“holy fool”) rather than Jesus’ authoritative pronouncement of God-given flourishing on every follower.Human theologian
11RepentanceHigh3:2,8; 4:17; 11:20-21; 12:41покаяние’s primary lived meaning for most Russians with Orthodox exposure is the sacrament of auricular Confession with priestly absolution. Matthew’s direct, unmediated inward turning to God must be stated explicitly as distinct, not assumed compatible by default.Human theologian
12BaptismCritical3:1-17; 28:19Live confessional divergence: Orthodox baptismal regeneration (ordinarily infant baptism) vs. believer’s-baptism traditions common among Evangelical/Baptist readers this curriculum also serves. Matthew’s text does not resolve this; curriculum must state its own position plainly.Human theologian
13The Incarnation and Virgin BirthMedium1:18-25Дева carries strong, largely positive Marian resonance (Дева Мария) — a genuine asset for intuitiveness — but risks importing additional Marian doctrine (perpetual virginity, veneration) not asserted by the plain text unless kept narrowly focused on the conception itself.Native speaker review
14The Deity of Christ (Confessional Statements)Critical14:33; 16:16; 17:1-8; 27:54; 28:9,17Combines the baseline’s Critical Сын Божий entry with the Мессия/Христос title across the Gospel’s structural pivots. Risk is that the deity claim and the messianic-office claim are separated or softened individually rather than held together at Peter’s confession (16:16), the Gospel’s turning point.Human theologian
15Sonship of Believers (distinct from Christ’s unique Sonship)High5:9,45; 6:9Believers’ plural, derivative сыны/дети Божьи must never be conflated with the singular Сын Божий reserved exclusively for Christ; Russian grammar’s easy plural/singular slippage on the same root heightens this risk.Human theologian
16Scripture’s Authority over Corrupting Human TraditionCritical15:1-9предание is the identical word for Orthodoxy’s own Священное Предание (Holy Tradition, held jointly authoritative with Scripture). Jesus’ critique targets a specific corrupting Pharisaic tradition, not “предание” as a category; an unqualified reading risks being heard as a blanket assault on Holy Tradition itself.Human theologian
17Blasphemy Against the Holy SpiritHigh12:22-32хула на Духа Святого is doctrinally correct but pastorally hazardous: anxious readers may fear ordinary doubt or intrusive thoughts qualify. Must state plainly that a specific, hardened, final rejection is in view.Human theologian
18The Lord’s SupperCritical26:26-29тело/кровь wording is uncontested; the interpretive divide (Real Presence/transformation in Orthodox Eucharistic theology vs. memorial/spiritual-presence views common among Protestant/Evangelical readers) is live and must be addressed explicitly, not assumed neutral.Human theologian
19Passover Fulfilled in ChristCritical26:2,17-19Пасха is the identical word for Christian Easter, the paramount Orthodox liturgical feast. Matthew 26 refers to the OT Jewish Passover meal, a distinct referent from the Resurrection feast that derives its name from this very event; explicit disambiguation (Ветхозаветная Пасха) is required.Human theologian
20The New Covenant in Christ’s BloodCritical26:28”Новый Завет” is the identical phrase used as the title of the New Testament book collection. At the Last Supper the phrase names the covenant reality Christ’s blood inaugurates, not the book readers hold; must be explicitly distinguished at this specific verse.Human theologian
21Servant LeadershipMedium20:20-28; 23:11раб carries heavy negative historical resonance (serfdom, Soviet forced labor); the existing positive devotional phrase “раб Божий” provides a useful bridge and should be leveraged rather than the negative social association alone.Native speaker review
22The Mysteries of the Kingdom (Parables)Medium13:1-52тайна in secular usage commonly denotes a puzzle, secret, or occult mystery; the doctrine requires a previously hidden divine truth now disclosed to responsive hearers, not an unsolved riddle — a distinction sharpened by post-Soviet interest in esoteric spirituality.Native speaker review
23The Transfiguration as Confirmation of Divine SonshipMedium17:1-8преображение is a strong positive liturgical asset (a major fixed Orthodox feast), but the narrative’s specific Christological argument (authority over Moses and Elijah, Law and Prophets) must be distinguished from the feast-day association alone.Native speaker review
24Jesus’ Fulfillment and Authoritative Reinterpretation of the LawHigh5:17-48исполнить (закон) risks two opposite errors: “abolish/replace,” severing OT continuity; or mere legal completion divorced from the authoritative reinterpretation in the antitheses that follow. Both must be guarded against explicitly.Human theologian
25Mercy and Compassion over Ritual SacrificeMedium9:13,36; 12:7; 14:14; 15:32; 20:34милость/милостивый/милосердие are the correct primary terms for this distinct concept, not weak substitutes for благодать; risk is over-applying the baseline’s grace caution and treating милость itself as suspect.Native speaker review
26Warning Against Hypocrisy and Externalized ReligionMedium6:1-18; 15:1-9; 23:1-36лицемер is well understood and “фарисей” is a standing Russian idiom for hypocrisy (a genuine asset); risk is flattening the historical Pharisees into caricature rather than preserving the text’s targeted critique of performance-based religion.Native speaker review
27The Cry of Dereliction and Substitutionary SufferingHigh27:45-50The Synodal “для чего Ты Меня оставил” raises a genuine trinitarian question — how the Son can be forsaken without division in the Godhead — that different traditions resolve differently; must be addressed directly in teaching text, not left unguided.Human theologian
28Christ’s Atoning Death as RansomHigh20:28; 26:28выкуп is a vivid, helpful commercial/hostage-ransom term but risks implying the price was paid to Satan (an old patristic-era theory with lingering informal currency); clarify the ransom secures freedom from sin’s bondage through Christ’s substitutionary death.Human theologian
29The Rejected Stone Become the CornerstoneMedium21:33-46The imagery translates cleanly, but 21:43’s “kingdom given to another nation” requires the same care as the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine, given the historical weight of antisemitism in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union.Native speaker review
30Universal Scope of the Mission to the NationsMedium8:5-13; 15:21-28; 24:14; 28:19Gentile-faith examples and the Great Commission’s universal scope must retain unqualified breadth; prefer народы over язычники so “all peoples” is not narrowed to “pagans,” and must not be read as Russian Orthodoxy’s exclusive national possession.Native speaker review
31Watchfulness and Readiness for Christ’s ReturnLow24:36-44; 25:1-13бодрствовать/бдите connects positively to the all-night vigil (всенощное бдение); minimal risk beyond ensuring eschatological urgency is not lost in liturgical familiarity.Automated review
32The Triumphal Entry and Messianic AcclamationLow21:1-11,14-16Осанна is a well-recognized retained transliteration with no significant collision; minimal risk beyond connecting the acclamation to the Son of David/Messiah doctrine rather than a standalone exclamation.Automated review

Risk summary (matches doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical 9 · High 12 · Medium 9 · Low 2 · Theologian review required: 21 · Native speaker review: 9 · Automated only: 2.

Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage (Matthew 1–28)

Matthew 1

Doctrines: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David (#2); The Incarnation and Virgin Birth (#13). Key terms: Сын Давидов, Христос, Дева/девственница, Эммануил (“с нами Бог”), от семени Давидова. Notes: The genealogy (1:2-17) is largely invisible in force to readers without sustained OT narrative literacy; it must be explicitly unpacked as covenant-historical argument, not decorative background. Дева’s positive Marian resonance is an asset but must be scoped narrowly to the miraculous conception itself. Review routing: Human theologian (Messiah/Son of David, Incarnation both flagged High/Medium).

Matthew 2

Doctrines: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy (#3, first three of ten occurrences: 2:15,17,23); Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David (#2, “King of the Jews,” 2:2). Key terms: Царь Иудейский, поклониться (Magi’s worship), да сбудется/чтобы исполнилось. Notes: “Иудейский” must be read covenant-historically, not as a modern political referent, per the baseline’s Israel caution. Review routing: Native speaker review.

Matthew 3

Doctrines: The Kingdom of Heaven (#1, “at hand,” 3:2); Repentance (#11); Baptism (#12); the Trinity is implicitly present at Jesus’ baptism, feeding forward into Deity of Christ (#14). Key terms: Царство Небесное, покаяние/покаяться, крестить/крещение, гнев (Божий). Notes: First occurrence of the Critical baptism doctrine; the Father’s voice and Spirit’s descent (3:16-17) should be flagged alongside 17:1-8 and 28:19 for Trinitarian consistency. Review routing: Human theologian (Kingdom, Repentance, Baptism all Critical/High).

Matthew 4

Doctrines: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus (#9, calling of the first disciples, 4:18-22); The Kingdom of Heaven (#1, proclamation begins, 4:17); the temptation narrative touches Fulfillment of Prophecy (#3) via Jesus’ OT citations. Key terms: искушение, диавол/сатана, ученик. Notes: No new Critical terms beyond those already flagged; establishes the discipleship-call pattern developed further at 8:18-22, 10:34-39, 16:24-26. Review routing: Human theologian (discipleship cost).

Matthew 5 (Core Passage 5:1-12)

Doctrines: The Blessedness of Kingdom Citizens/Beatitudes (#10, core passage); The Kingdom of Heaven (#1, 5:3,10); Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees (#5, 5:6,10,20,48); Jesus’ Fulfillment and Reinterpretation of the Law (#24, 5:17-48); Sonship of Believers (#15, 5:9,45). Key terms: блаженны, нищие духом, кроткие, милостивые, чистые сердцем, миротворцы, правда/праведность (dual rendering), сыны/дети Божьи, исполнить (закон). Notes: The single most doctrinally dense chapter in the analysis. The правда/праведность fork within the same chapter (5:6,10 vs. 5:20) must be taught explicitly, since it directly affects the core passage. Review routing: Human theologian (Beatitudes, Kingdom, Righteousness, Law/antitheses, Sonship all Critical/High).

Matthew 6

Doctrines: Warning Against Hypocrisy and Externalized Religion (#26, 6:1-18); The Kingdom of Heaven (#1, righteousness sought first, 6:33); Thanksgiving/Fatherhood language reuses baseline terms. Key terms: лицемер, сокровище/маммона, Отец (baseline reuse), Царство Небесное. Notes: маммона is a well-settled Synodal loanword requiring no new caution beyond the registry entry. Review routing: Native speaker review.

Matthew 7

Doctrines: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching (#4, 7:28-29); secondary touch on Warning Against Hypocrisy (#26, false prophets). Key terms: власть, не судите, беззаконие (7:23). Notes: 7:28-29 is the chapter’s structural climax and the doctrine’s first proof-text; “не судите” is frequently misquoted in secular idiom as a blanket relativistic maxim and must be restored to its narrower original target. Review routing: Human theologian (Authority).

Matthew 8

Doctrines: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching (#4, 8:9); Universal Scope of the Mission to the Nations (#30, centurion, 8:5-13); Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus (#9, 8:18-22); introduces Сын Человеческий (8:20). Key terms: власть, Сын Человеческий, ученик. Notes: The centurion’s faith is the first Gentile-faith example developed further at 15:21-28; establishes the universal-scope doctrine’s pattern. Review routing: Native speaker review (mission scope); Human theologian for authority overlap.

Matthew 9

Doctrines: Mercy and Compassion over Ritual Sacrifice (#25, 9:13,36). Key terms: милостивые/милость, мытари и грешники, сжалился. Notes: Establishes милость as the correct primary term for a distinct concept from благодать; no doctrinal risk beyond the registry’s caution against over-applying the grace caution here. Review routing: Native speaker review.

Matthew 10

Doctrines: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus (#9, 10:34-39); apostleship (baseline reuse, апостол, 10:1-4); persecution anticipates Judgment/End of Age (#8, 10:23). Key terms: апостол (baseline reuse), гнать/изгнанные. Notes: “Not peace but a sword” (10:34) requires careful framing against the baseline’s мир caution to avoid a political-peace misreading. Review routing: Human theologian (discipleship cost).

Matthew 11

Doctrines: Repentance (#11, 11:20-21); The Kingdom of Heaven (#1, yoke/rest imagery, 11:28-30, adjacent). Key terms: Грядущий (the Coming One, 11:3), ярмо/иго, покой. Notes: покой here is the correct primary term for “rest,” distinct from the baseline’s мир (peace) caution — no substitution risk, but the two must not be blended. Review routing: Human theologian (repentance); native speaker for rest imagery.

Matthew 12

Doctrines: Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit (#17, 12:22-32); Mercy and Compassion over Ritual Sacrifice (#25, 12:7); The Kingdom of Heaven/Kingdom of God (#1, 12:28, baseline term Царство Божие used here). Key terms: хула на Духа Святого, знамение Ионы (sign of Jonah, typological register). Notes: Pastoral risk is highest here: anxious readers must be told plainly that ordinary doubt does not qualify as the unforgivable sin. Review routing: Human theologian.

Matthew 13

Doctrines: The Mysteries of the Kingdom/Parables (#22); Judgment and the End of the Age (#8, 13:39-40,49, first “end of the age” occurrences). Key terms: притча, тайны (Царства), кончина/скончание века, плач и скрежет зубов (first of six occurrences, must render identically throughout). Notes: тайна’s secular “puzzle/occult secret” connotation must be actively guarded against, especially given post-Soviet esoteric-spirituality interest. Review routing: Native speaker review (parables); human theologian for end-of-age content.

Matthew 14

Doctrines: The Deity of Christ Confessional Statements (#14, 14:33, “Truly you are the Son of God”); secondary discipleship theme (little faith, 14:31). Key terms: Сын Божий (baseline reuse, singular Christ-referent), маловерный. Notes: Must be held together with the fuller confession at 16:16 as part of a single developing doctrinal argument, not treated as an isolated exclamation. Review routing: Human theologian.

Matthew 15

Doctrines: Scripture’s Authority over Corrupting Human Tradition (#16, 15:1-9); Universal Scope of the Mission to the Nations (#30, Canaanite woman, 15:21-28); Warning Against Hypocrisy (#26). Key terms: предание (старцев), осквернять. Notes: The single highest-stakes term-collision chapter after 16 and 26: предание is identical to Orthodoxy’s own Священное Предание. The critique’s narrow target (a specific corrupting tradition) must be stated explicitly to avoid appearing to reject Holy Tradition wholesale. Review routing: Human theologian.

Matthew 16

Doctrines: The Deity of Christ Confessional Statements (#14, 16:16, Peter’s confession — the Gospel’s structural pivot); The Church and Church Discipline (#6, 16:18-19); Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus (#9, 16:24-26). Key terms: Христос, Сын Бога живого, церковь, ключи (Царства), связывать/разрешать, взять крест свой. Notes: The single most doctrinally concentrated chapter after 5 and 26. “Разрешать” must be handled with extreme care given its collision with Orthodox sacramental-absolution vocabulary; the curriculum’s own position on church authority must be stated plainly here. Review routing: Human theologian (all three doctrines Critical/High).

Matthew 17

Doctrines: The Transfiguration as Confirmation of Divine Sonship (#23). Key terms: преображение. Notes: Must be distinguished from the fixed liturgical feast-day association (Преображение Господне) so the specific Christological argument (authority over Moses and Elijah) is not lost in cultural familiarity. 17:20 continues маловерный from ch.14. Review routing: Native speaker review.

Matthew 18

Doctrines: The Church and Church Discipline (#6, 18:15-20); secondary “little ones” and stumbling-block material. Key terms: малые сии, соблазн, связывать/разрешать (parallel to 16:19). Notes: 18:15-20 is the congregational-process counterpart to 16:18-19 and must be read together with it for a consistent ecclesiology. Review routing: Human theologian.

Matthew 19

Doctrines: No new Critical/High doctrine beyond those already flagged; touches Discipleship (#9, rich young man, 19:16-30) and reuses Kingdom of God (#1, baseline term, 19:24). Key terms: жизнь вечная (eternal life, first occurrence), Царство Божие (baseline reuse). Notes: Reviewed — chapter contributes eternal-life terminology (жизнь вечная) that recurs at 25:46 but introduces no new doctrine beyond the matrix above. Review routing: Native speaker review.

Matthew 20

Doctrines: Christ’s Atoning Death as Ransom (#28, 20:28); Servant Leadership (#21, 20:20-28); Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David (#2, 20:30-31). Key terms: выкуп, слуга/раб, Сын Давидов, награда (reward, parable of the laborers). Notes: раб’s negative serfdom/forced-labor resonance should be bridged via the existing positive devotional phrase “раб Божий.” Review routing: Human theologian (ransom); native speaker (servant leadership).

Matthew 21

Doctrines: The Triumphal Entry and Messianic Acclamation (#32); The Rejected Stone Become the Cornerstone (#29, 21:33-46); Kingdom of God (#1, baseline term, 21:31,43). Key terms: Осанна, Сын Давидов, камень… главою угла. Notes: 21:43’s “kingdom given to another nation” requires the same antisupersessionist care as the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine. Review routing: Automated review (Hosanna/entry); native speaker review (cornerstone).

Matthew 22

Doctrines: Effectual Calling/Election (baseline reuse, “called/chosen,” 22:14); greatest-commandment material (love, ἀγαπάω) touches Righteousness doctrine indirectly. Key terms: призваны/избранны (baseline reuse — no судьба/рок/карма substitution), любить/любовь. Notes: Reviewed — 22:14 is the primary Matthew proof-text tying directly into the baseline’s Critical election doctrine; no new doctrine beyond the matrix. Review routing: Human theologian (baseline election doctrine reused).

Matthew 23

Doctrines: Warning Against Hypocrisy and Externalized Religion (#26); secondary tradition/lawlessness themes. Key terms: лицемер, горе (вам), беззаконие. Notes: “Фарисей” as a standing Russian idiom for hypocrisy is a genuine cultural asset here but risks flattening the historical Pharisees into caricature. Review routing: Native speaker review.

Matthew 24

Doctrines: Judgment and the End of the Age (#8); Watchfulness and Readiness (#31, 24:36-44). Key terms: Сын Человеческий, кончина века, мерзость запустения, род сей, бодрствовать/бдите. Notes: “This generation” (24:34) carries an underlying interpretive ambiguity that is exegetical rather than lexical and should be flagged for content review, not resolved by translation choice alone. Review routing: Human theologian (judgment/end of age); automated review (watchfulness).

Matthew 25

Doctrines: Watchfulness and Readiness (#31, wise/foolish virgins); Judgment and the End of the Age (#8, sheep and goats, eternal punishment/life parallel, 25:46). Key terms: таланты, плач и скрежет зубов (final of six occurrences), мука вечная/жизнь вечная, меньшие братья Мои. Notes: 25:46’s grammatical parallel (identical вечный/вечная for both clauses) must be preserved exactly with no asymmetric softening — the single highest-stakes lexical-consistency point in the judgment doctrine. Review routing: Human theologian.

Matthew 26

Doctrines: The Lord’s Supper (#18, 26:26-29); Passover Fulfilled in Christ (#19, 26:2,17-19); The New Covenant in Christ’s Blood (#20, 26:28); secondary discipleship-cost/betrayal material. Key terms: Пасха, тело/кровь, Новый Завет, предать/предавать, отрекся (Peter’s denial predicted). Notes: The single densest concentration of Critical-tier term-collisions in the entire book (three Critical doctrines in one chapter: Пасха=Easter, Новый Завет=book title, тело/кровь=contested Eucharistic interpretation). Each requires explicit disambiguation at the point of occurrence. Review routing: Human theologian (all three doctrines Critical).

Matthew 27

Doctrines: The Cry of Dereliction and Substitutionary Suffering (#27, 27:45-50); secondary temple-veil imagery. Key terms: оставил (Меня), завеса (храма) раздралась. Notes: The trinitarian question raised by the cry of dereliction must be addressed directly in teaching text rather than left as an apparent unresolved contradiction. Review routing: Human theologian.

Matthew 28

Doctrines: The Great Commission (#7, 28:16-20); resurrection (baseline reuse, воскресение); Deity of Christ Confessional Statements (#14, worship at 28:9,17). Key terms: научите (make disciples), во имя Отца и Сына и Святого Духа (Trinitarian baptismal formula, must be verbatim-consistent across all documents), воскресение (baseline reuse). Notes: Closes the Gospel by returning to and completing the baptism doctrine opened at ch. 3 and the authority doctrine anchored at 28:18; requires cross-referencing both. Review routing: Human theologian.

Coverage Statement

All 28 chapters of Matthew have been reviewed for load-bearing doctrinal and terminological content. Chapters not carrying new Critical/High-tier material (6, 9, 11, 17, 19, 21, 22, 23) are explicitly noted above with their actual (Medium/Low-tier or baseline-reused) content rather than omitted. This matrix is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json: identical doctrine set (32), identical risk tiers, identical review routing.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Kingdom of Heaven

Russian name: Царство Небесное
Key terms: kingdom of heaven, kingdom of God, at hand, repent
Review routing: Human theologian

Царство Небесное must be taught as synonymous with, not competing against, the equally-present Царство Божие within the same book (12:28; 19:24; 21:31,43). The graver risk is the common Russian funeral/memorial idiom ‘царствие ему небесное’ (rest his soul), which primes readers to hear ‘Небесное’ as an exclusively future, otherworldly afterlife destination rather than God’s present, in-breaking reign — this idiom must be explicitly named and set aside in teaching.

Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees

Russian name: праведность, превосходящая праведность фарисеев
Key terms: righteousness, hunger and thirst for righteousness, unless your righteousness exceeds, pure in heart, tradition of the elders, hypocrite
Review routing: Human theologian

The established Synodal text renders the identical Greek δικαιοσύνη as правда at 5:6 and 5:10 but as праведность at 5:20 — the very verse stating this named doctrine — creating a real fork against the baseline’s single-term Critical-risk policy. This must be taught explicitly as one Greek concept split across two Russian words; правда additionally carries its own false-friend risk of meaning merely ‘truth/fairness’ in secular Russian, distinct from but parallel to the baseline’s rejection of справедливость.

The Church and Church Discipline

Russian name: церковь и церковное наставление
Key terms: church, keys of the kingdom, bind and loose, if two or three are gathered, little ones
Review routing: Human theologian

16:18 is the single most consequential NT occurrence of церковь, the historic proof-text for competing papal (Catholic), sacramental-clergy (Orthodox), and congregational (Protestant) readings of church authority; and ‘разрешать’ (‘loose,’ 16:19; 18:18) resonates directly with the technical Orthodox term for a priest’s sacramental absolution (‘разрешительная молитва’), risking importation of a clergy-mediated framework onto text the curriculum likely intends as the whole church’s collective authority. The curriculum must state its own position on both церковь and the keys explicitly.

Baptism

Russian name: крещение
Key terms: baptize, baptism, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian

A live and significant confessional divergence specific to the Russian context: Orthodox theology holds to baptismal regeneration (ordinarily infant baptism sacramentally effecting new birth and church incorporation), while the many Evangelical, Baptist, and other Protestant traditions this curriculum also serves typically hold to believer’s baptism as a subsequent public declaration of a prior conversion. Matthew’s text does not resolve this debate explicitly; the curriculum must state its own position plainly rather than let readers assume either resolution by default.

The Deity of Christ (Confessional Statements)

Russian name: исповедание божества Христа
Key terms: Son of God, Christ, the Son of the living God, worship, Son of Man coming in glory
Review routing: Human theologian

These confessions combine the baseline’s Critical Сын Божий entry with the Christological title Мессия/Христос across the Gospel’s structural pivots; the risk is that the deity claim and the messianic-office claim are separated or softened individually rather than preserved together at their full combined doctrinal weight, particularly at Peter’s confession (16:16), the Gospel’s turning point.

Scripture’s Authority over Corrupting Human Tradition

Russian name: авторитет Писания над искажающим человеческим преданием
Key terms: tradition of the elders, you have made void the word of God, commandments of men
Review routing: Human theologian

предание is the identical Russian word used for Orthodoxy’s own Священное Предание (Holy/Sacred Tradition, held jointly authoritative with Scripture in Orthodox theology, and already flagged in the baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine). Jesus’ critique targets a specific, identified Pharisaic tradition that nullified God’s actual command, not a blanket condemnation of ‘предание’ as a category; an unqualified reading would be heard by Orthodox readers as a direct assault on Holy Tradition itself and risks generating defensiveness rather than genuine engagement.

The Lord’s Supper

Russian name: Вечеря Господня
Key terms: this is my body, this is my blood, do this in remembrance, new covenant
Review routing: Human theologian

The Russian wording itself (тело/кровь) is uncontested across traditions; the risk is purely theological-interpretive. Given the weight Orthodox tradition places on the Eucharist (Евхаристия/Причастие) as the central sacramental act with Real Presence/transformation, versus the memorial or spiritual-presence views common among many Protestant/Evangelical traditions this curriculum also serves, the curriculum must state its own position explicitly rather than assume neutral shared ground exists.

Passover Fulfilled in Christ

Russian name: исполнение Пасхи во Христе
Key terms: Passover, Lamb, the Passover meal, my time is at hand
Review routing: Human theologian

Пасха is the identical Russian word used for Christian Easter, the single most important feast of the Orthodox liturgical year. Matthew 26 refers to the Old Testament Jewish Passover meal on the night before the crucifixion, a wholly distinct referent from the Christian Resurrection feast that derives its name from this very event; readers must be given explicit clarification (Ветхозаветная Пасха) to prevent conflating the Passover-meal-to-resurrection timeline with a single undifferentiated ‘Easter’ event.

The New Covenant in Christ’s Blood

Russian name: Новый Завет в Крови Христа
Key terms: new covenant, my blood of the covenant, for the forgiveness of sins
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Новый Завет’ is the identical Russian phrase used as the title of the New Testament (the biblical book collection). At the Last Supper this phrase names the relational covenant reality Christ’s blood inaugurates, not the book readers hold in their hands; the curriculum must explicitly distinguish these two senses at this specific verse, extending the baseline’s general caution about завет’s centrality to the Testament names.

High Risk Doctrines

Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David

Russian name: Иисус как обещанный Мессия и Сын Давидов
Key terms: Christ, Son of David, Messiah, seed of David
Review routing: Human theologian

Христос functions as Jesus’ effective surname in everyday Russian, and Сын Давидов is an archaic phrase; both risk having their original title-force worn smooth through overuse. The genealogical argument (1:2-17) substantiating the title is largely invisible to readers with limited sustained OT narrative literacy and must be explicitly unpacked, not assumed.

The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching

Russian name: власть учения Иисуса
Key terms: authority, not as their scribes, all authority in heaven and on earth
Review routing: Human theologian

власть, the only viable Russian term, carries very heavy political/institutional-power connotations in Russian from both imperial (‘царская власть’) and Soviet/post-Soviet (‘органы власти’, ‘советская власть’) usage, generally with a suspicious popular connotation. Jesus’ inherent, personal, moral, divine authority must be actively distinguished from state or institutional power throughout, not merely at 7:28-29.

The Great Commission

Russian name: Великое поручение
Key terms: make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I am with you always
Review routing: Human theologian

The established Synodal ‘научите все народы’ under-translates the fuller causative ‘make disciples of’ sense of μαθητεύσατε, risking a mere information-transfer reading rather than the total-life apprenticeship modeled throughout the Gospel; the accompanying Trinitarian baptismal formula also collides with the Critical-risk baptism doctrine (Orthodox baptismal regeneration vs. believer’s-baptism traditions) and must receive verbatim-consistent rendering across all curriculum documents.

Judgment and the End of the Age

Russian name: суд и кончина века
Key terms: Son of Man coming in glory, end of the age, weeping and gnashing of teeth, eternal punishment, eternal life, sheep and goats
Review routing: Human theologian

Сын Человеческий risks being flattened into a generic ‘human being’ reference, losing the exalted Danielic apocalyptic-judge sense essential to this doctrine; separately, Matthew 25:46’s strict grammatical parallel (identical вечный/вечная modifying both punishment and life) must be preserved exactly, with no asymmetric softening of eternal punishment relative to eternal life.

Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus

Russian name: ученичество и цена следования за Иисусом
Key terms: take up his cross, lose his life for my sake, leave everything and follow, not peace but a sword
Review routing: Human theologian

The cross (крест) is ubiquitous in ordinary Russian religious and cultural life — worn as jewelry, made in the sign of the cross, displayed on churches and gravesites — and this omnipresence risks flattening ‘taking up one’s cross’ into mere religious-cultural symbol-wearing or identity-marking rather than the text’s actual demand for costly, potentially life-threatening self-denial.

The Blessedness of Kingdom Citizens (Beatitudes)

Russian name: блаженство граждан Царства
Key terms: blessed, poor in spirit, meek, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, persecuted
Review routing: Human theologian

блаженны carries genuine positive liturgical resonance (chanted at the Divine Liturgy) but also a colloquial risk of being heard as ‘simple-minded’ or narrowly as the technical Orthodox category of the canonized юродивый (‘holy fool’), rather than Jesus’ authoritative pronouncement of God-given flourishing on every follower.

Repentance

Russian name: покаяние
Key terms: repent, repentance, kingdom of heaven is at hand, bear fruit
Review routing: Human theologian

For most Russians with any exposure to Orthodox practice, покаяние’s primary lived meaning is the sacrament of auricular Confession (Таинство Покаяния) with priestly absolution. Matthew’s call to repentance is a decisive inward turning to God available to and required of every person directly, not necessarily mediated through sacramental confession — this distinction must be stated explicitly rather than assumed compatible by default.

Sonship of Believers (Distinct from Christ’s Unique Sonship)

Russian name: сыновство верующих (в отличие от единственного Сыновства Христа)
Key terms: sons of God, shall be called sons of God, your Father in heaven
Review routing: Human theologian

Believers’ plural, derivative sonship (сыны/дети Божьи) must never be rendered with the singular Сын Божий reserved exclusively for Christ’s unique, eternal deity per the baseline; the risk is a translator or reader collapsing the two categories into one title, especially given how easily Russian grammar allows plural/singular forms of the same root to be conflated in casual reading.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

Russian name: хула на Духа Святого
Key terms: blasphemy against the Spirit, unforgivable, never be forgiven
Review routing: Human theologian

хула на Духа Святого is doctrinally correct and gravely registered, but the primary risk is pastoral: anxious readers (a documented cross-tradition pattern) may fear that ordinary doubt, intrusive blasphemous thoughts, or emotional distress qualify as this sin. Teaching text must state plainly that a specific, hardened, final rejection of the Spirit’s manifest work is in view, not momentary doubt.

Jesus’ Fulfillment and Authoritative Reinterpretation of the Law

Russian name: исполнение и авторитетное истолкование закона Иисусом
Key terms: fulfill the Law, you have heard… but I say to you, not one iota
Review routing: Human theologian

исполнить (закон) risks two opposite errors in Russian: being heard as ‘abolish/replace,’ severing continuity with the Old Testament; or being heard as mere legal completion divorced from Jesus’ authoritative reinterpretation in the antitheses that follow. Both errors must be guarded against explicitly, since закон’s civil-law register in ordinary Russian usage does not by itself convey either risk.

The Cry of Dereliction and Substitutionary Suffering

Russian name: крик оставленности и заместительное страдание
Key terms: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me, it is finished (implied by narrative context)
Review routing: Human theologian

The established Synodal phrasing ‘для чего Ты Меня оставил’ raises a genuinely difficult trinitarian question — how the Son could be forsaken by the Father without division within the Godhead — that different theological traditions resolve differently; the curriculum must address this directly in teaching text rather than leave readers to puzzle over an apparent contradiction in Trinitarian doctrine without guidance.

Christ’s Atoning Death as Ransom

Russian name: искупительная смерть Христа как выкуп
Key terms: ransom for many, give his life, his blood… for the forgiveness of sins
Review routing: Human theologian

выкуп (ransom) is a vivid commercial/hostage-ransom term with a helpful concrete modern Russian association, but risks an unintended implication that the ransom price was paid to Satan (an old patristic-era theory with some lingering informal currency); the curriculum should clarify the ransom secures freedom from sin’s bondage through Christ’s substitutionary death, consistent with standard evangelical atonement theology.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy

Russian name: исполнение пророчества
Key terms: that it might be fulfilled, as the prophet said, sign of Jonah, abomination of desolation
Review routing: Native speaker review

Linear historical fulfillment is not in tension with any competing native Russian cosmology, unlike in some cultures; the risk is amplified in Matthew specifically by the sheer frequency (ten occurrences) of the fulfillment formula, which without sustained OT background teaching invites readers to hear each citation as generic religious literature rather than a specific, historically anchored promise.

The Incarnation and Virgin Birth

Russian name: воплощение и рождение от Девы
Key terms: virgin, Emmanuel, God with us, conceived by the Holy Spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review

Дева carries strong, largely positive Orthodox Marian resonance (Дева Мария, Приснодева); this is a genuine cultural asset for intuitiveness of the miraculous-conception claim, but risks importing additional Marian doctrine (perpetual virginity, veneration) not asserted by the plain text unless the term’s use here is kept narrowly focused on the conception itself.

Servant Leadership

Russian name: служение как основа лидерства
Key terms: servant, slave, not to be served but to serve, the greatest among you shall be your servant
Review routing: Native speaker review

раб carries heavy negative historical resonance in Russian (крепостное право, serfdom; Soviet-era forced labor) that could obscure the positive theological sense of willing self-giving service Christ models; the existing positive Orthodox devotional phrase ‘раб Божий’ provides a useful bridge and should be leveraged rather than the more negative historical-social association alone.

The Mysteries of the Kingdom (Parables)

Russian name: тайны Царства (притчи)
Key terms: parable, mystery, to you it has been given to know
Review routing: Native speaker review

тайна in secular Russian usage commonly denotes a puzzle, secret, or occult mystery; the doctrine requires this to be read as a previously hidden divine truth now disclosed to responsive hearers, not an unsolved riddle or esoteric secret, a distinction worth making explicit given post-Soviet interest in esoteric spirituality.

The Transfiguration as Confirmation of Divine Sonship

Russian name: Преображение как подтверждение Божественного Сыновства
Key terms: transfigured, this is my beloved Son, listen to him
Review routing: Native speaker review

преображение is a strong positive liturgical asset (a major fixed Orthodox feast, Преображение Господне), but the specific narrative event and its Christological argument (Jesus’ authority over Moses and Elijah, Law and Prophets) must be distinguished from the feast-day association alone so the doctrinal point is not lost in cultural familiarity.

Mercy and Compassion over Ritual Sacrifice

Russian name: милость и сострадание превыше жертвы
Key terms: I desire mercy, not sacrifice, merciful, compassion on the crowds
Review routing: Native speaker review

милость/милостивый/милосердие are the correct primary Russian terms for this distinct concept, not weak substitutes for благодать (grace) as the baseline cautions elsewhere; the risk here is under-applying the baseline’s caution and treating милость itself as suspect rather than simply the right word for a different theological category.

Warning Against Hypocrisy and Externalized Religion

Russian name: предостережение против лицемерия и внешней религиозности
Key terms: hypocrite, whitewashed tombs, for a pretense make long prayers, woe to you
Review routing: Native speaker review

лицемер is well understood, and ‘фарисей’ has become a standing Russian idiom for hypocrisy, a genuine cultural asset; the risk is flattening the historical Pharisees into an uncomplicated caricature rather than preserving the text’s specific, targeted critique of externalized, performance-based religious practice.

The Rejected Stone Become the Cornerstone

Russian name: отвергнутый камень, соделавшийся главою угла
Key terms: cornerstone, the stone the builders rejected, kingdom given to another people
Review routing: Native speaker review

The rejected-become-foundational imagery translates cleanly, but 21:43’s ‘kingdom given to another nation’ must be handled with the same care as the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine to avoid any supersessionist or ethnically-triumphalist misreading, particularly given the historical weight of antisemitism in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union already flagged in the baseline.

Universal Scope of the Mission to the Nations

Russian name: всеобщий охват миссии к народам
Key terms: all nations, gospel of the kingdom preached… to all nations, Gentile faith
Review routing: Native speaker review

Repeated Gentile faith examples (the centurion, ch. 8; the Canaanite woman, ch. 15) and the Great Commission’s universal scope must retain unqualified breadth; follow the baseline’s mission-scope guidance and prefer народы over язычники so the universal ‘all peoples’ sense is not narrowed to a ‘pagans’ connotation, and must not be read as Russian Orthodox national identity’s exclusive possession, per the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel caution.

Low Risk Doctrines

Watchfulness and Readiness for Christ’s Return

Russian name: бодрствование и готовность ко Второму пришествию
Key terms: watch, be ready, no one knows the day or hour, wise and foolish virgins
Review routing: Automated review

бодрствовать/бдите connects positively to the Orthodox practice of the all-night vigil (всенощное бдение), making watchful spiritual alertness culturally intuitive; minimal risk beyond ensuring the eschatological urgency is not lost in the term’s liturgical familiarity.

The Triumphal Entry and Messianic Acclamation

Russian name: торжественный вход и мессианское признание
Key terms: Hosanna, Son of David, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
Review routing: Automated review

Осанна is a well-recognized retained transliteration with no significant collision; minimal risk beyond ensuring the acclamation is connected to the Son of David/Messiah doctrine rather than read as a standalone liturgical exclamation.
