Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — James 1–5 (English → Russian)
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the Epistle of James, covering every chapter and major section from 1:1 to 5:20. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same nine doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing. Sections of the text that do not introduce a new load-bearing doctrinal term are explicitly marked “reviewed — no new doctrine” per the full-book-coverage mandate; they are never silently omitted.
Core passage: James 2:14–26 (Faith and Works) is the theological anchor of the curriculum and receives the highest concentration of Critical-risk terminology, but the matrix below spans the entire book.
Doctrine Matrix
| Ch. | Passage(s) | Section / Content | Doctrine | Risk Level | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1:1 | Greeting: James as “servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,” to “the twelve tribes in the Dispersion” | — | Low | Reviewed — no new load-bearing doctrine. “Servant” (раб/слуга) and “Dispersion” (рассеяние) are standard, low-ambiguity Synodal terms; no collision risk identified. Noted for completeness only. | Automated review |
| 1 | 1:2–4 | ”Count it all joy” when facing trials; testing produces steadfastness | Trials and the Testing of Faith | High | искушение defaults in ordinary Russian to “temptation to sin,” risking an inverted reading of a command to rejoice in temptation itself rather than external trial; испытание (testing/proof) must be kept distinct from the trial-event. терпение (endurance) must read as active, fruit-bearing perseverance, not passive resignation. | Human theologian |
| 1 | 1:5–8 | Asking God for wisdom in faith, without doubting; the “double-minded” man | Wisdom from Above | High | Synodal itself alternates премудрость (1:5)/мудрость (3:13–17) for the same Greek word, risking the impression of two separate concepts. двоедушный (“double-souled”) is vivid literary register requiring a plain-language gloss. Overlaps with Prayer doctrine (просить) — cross-reference intentionally, do not silently merge the two doctrines. | Human theologian |
| 1 | 1:9–11 | The “lowly” boasting in exaltation; the rich fading like grass | Favoritism and the Poor | High | ταπεινός (смиренный/униженный) here names low social station, distinct from πτωχός (“poor” proper) in ch. 2; keep both senses distinguishable across the book. | Human theologian |
| 1 | 1:12–18 | Blessing of the one who endures trial; God does not tempt; every good gift comes from the unchanging “Father of lights” | Trials and the Testing of Faith | High | Continues 1:2–4’s doctrine; adds the critical clarification that trials are not divinely authored temptations to sin — искушение’s dual sense (trial/temptation) must be disambiguated explicitly here or the passage can read as self-contradictory. God’s changeless goodness (“no variation or shadow due to change”) reinforces but does not replace the baseline Romans entry for Бог; no separate glossary entry required. | Human theologian |
| 1 | 1:19–21 | ”Slow to speak,” receiving the “implanted word” | Taming the Tongue | Medium | Early preview of ch. 3’s fuller doctrine; слово, насаждённое (implanted word) is positively-valenced and low-risk. | Native speaker review |
| 1 | 1:22–25 | Hearers vs. doers of the word; the “perfect law of liberty” | Faith and Works | Critical | This is the direct literary preview of 2:14–26 and shares the дело root with ἔργα; исполнитель (doer) must not be softened into a merely cognitive “one who understands.” закон совершенный/закон свободы is a positively-valenced use of закон unlike most of Romans and must not appear to contradict the Romans law/grace argument — requires explicit harmonizing note in expository text. | Human theologian |
| 1 | 1:26–27 | Bridling the tongue; pure religion: caring for orphans and widows, keeping oneself unstained from the world | Taming the Tongue / Favoritism and the Poor / Worldliness versus Friendship with God | Medium–High | Triple-doctrine verse. благочестие (religion/piety) is an asset term avoiding secular-institutional “религия.” Care for orphans/widows carries unusual weight given post-Soviet детский дом associations. “Unstained from the world” previews ch. 4’s мир doctrine — do not resolve its ambiguity here; flag forward. | Human theologian (for favoritism/worldliness strands); Native speaker (tongue strand) |
| 2 | 2:1–13 | Prohibition of favoritism toward the rich in the assembly; the royal law of neighbor-love; mercy without partiality | Favoritism and the Poor | High | лицеприятие is literary/biblical register absent from colloquial speech; requires a plain-language gloss to land with force. избрал (God’s choosing of the poor, 2:5) reuses избрание and must never be rendered with судьба/рок/карма per the Romans baseline forbidden-substitution list. Distinguish милость (ἔλεος, mercy) here from благодать (χάρις, grace) — different Greek words, different risk profiles. | Human theologian |
| 2 | 2:14–26 | CORE PASSAGE. “Faith without works is dead”; Abraham justified by works; “faith apart from works is dead”; Rahab | Faith and Works | Critical | Highest-density Critical-risk passage in the book. дела, содействовать, оправдание, только, χωρίς/без all converge here. James’s evidential/vindicating sense of δικαιόω must be explicitly distinguished from Paul’s forensic/initial sense in Romans without silently harmonizing or silently leaving apparent contradiction. See doctrine_risk_registry.json “faith_and_works” entry for full resolution language required in expository text. | Human theologian |
| 3 | 3:1–12 | The tongue as fire, poison, untamable member; blessing and cursing from the same mouth | Taming the Tongue | Medium | Main residual risk is registerial — preserving the vivid nature-imagery’s rhetorical force in modern literary Russian rather than flattening it into a moral maxim. язык’s dual sense (“tongue”/“language”) is disambiguated easily by context. | Native speaker review |
| 3 | 3:13–18 | Two kinds of wisdom: earthly/soulish/demonic vs. wisdom from above | Wisdom from Above | High | ψυχική → душевная is a genuine false friend: in everyday Russian душевный is a warm compliment (a soulful, sincere person), while James names a deficient, unspiritual wisdom one rung above demonic. Mandatory clarifying gloss at first use or the verse’s polarity is inverted for a Russian reader. мудрость свыше is the curriculum’s own doctrinal anchor phrase. | Human theologian |
| 4 | 4:1–10 | Quarrels from desire; friendship with the world as enmity with God; “adulteresses”; grace to the humble | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | High | мир’s world/peace double-sense (flagged in the Romans baseline) becomes acute at 4:4’s stark antithesis; must not be softened toward literal peace-making. “Adulteresses” is OT covenant-unfaithfulness idiom and risks being read narrowly as sexual-sin language by a literal-minded or secular reader. благодать (χάρις, 4:6) is one of James’s rare uses of this Critical Romans-baseline term — reinforce cross-curricular consistency, not a new sense. | Human theologian |
| 4 | 4:11–12 | Prohibition of judging a brother; “one lawgiver and judge” | — | Low–Medium | Reviewed — no major new doctrine. Reuses закон/суд roots already carried by Favoritism (ch. 2) and Faith and Works (royal law) doctrines; no new term coined. Noted for completeness. | Native speaker review |
| 4 | 4:13–17 | Presumptuous planning without regard for God; “if the Lord wills” | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | High | ”если угодно будет Господу” must be guarded against flattening into the fatalistic folk cliché “как Бог даст,” which would import an impersonal-fate register the text does not intend (cf. Romans providence entry). Continues the ch. 4 doctrine rather than introducing a separate one. | Human theologian |
| 5 | 5:1–6 | Judgment oracle against oppressive rich landowners; withheld wages; self-indulgence | Favoritism and the Poor | High | Shares дело/работа semantic field with ἔργα (works) — economic dimension of the Faith and Works doctrine cluster; risk is primarily one of register (богатство/сгнило/изоржавело needs to retain prophetic-oracle force, not read as generic social commentary). | Human theologian |
| 5 | 5:7–11 | Patience until the Lord’s coming; the farmer waiting for rain; the prophets and Job as examples of endurance | Patience and the Lord’s Return | High | долготерпеть (μακροθυμέω) and терпение (ὑπομονή, reused from ch. 1) name related but lexically distinct concepts that must remain distinguishable even though Synodal itself alternates between them within 5:10–11. пришествие Господне without an explicit “second” qualifier risks ambiguity with Christ’s first coming/incarnation. | Human theologian |
| 5 | 5:12 | Prohibition of oaths; “let your yes be yes” | Taming the Tongue | Medium | Low-risk continuation of ch. 3’s doctrine; клясться (to swear) is standard, unambiguous. | Native speaker review |
| 5 | 5:13–18 | Prayer in suffering and joy; elders anointing the sick with oil in the Lord’s name; the prayer of faith; Elijah | Prayer and Healing | Critical | Direct, unmistakable correspondence to the Orthodox sacrament of Елеосвящение/Соборование (Holy Unction). пресвитеры intensifies церковь’s existing High-risk default toward an Orthodox-institution reading. исцелить (heal) must be kept distinct from спасти (soteriological save) per Synodal precedent. Requires explicit, respectful distinguishing note — not denial of common ground, not flattening into generic “pray for the sick.” | Human theologian |
| 5 | 5:19–20 | Confessing sins to one another; turning back a wanderer; covering a multitude of sins; saving a soul from death | Confession and Restoration | Critical | Direct correspondence to the Orthodox sacrament of Исповедь (Confession), normatively priest-mediated with formal absolution. James describes mutual, peer-level, non-sacramental confession with no priestly mediator named — must be explicitly distinguished, honoring sacramental confession’s real value in Orthodox tradition while clarifying James’s distinct practice. Secondary textus-receptus variant (проступки vs. грехи) flagged but not treated as an error. спасет душу от смерти restores full soteriological weight at the book’s close, contrasting with 5:15’s healing sense. | Human theologian |
Risk Summary (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly)
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 3 | Human theologian (every occurrence) |
| High | 5 | Human theologian |
| Medium | 1 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 0 | Automated review |
| Total doctrines | 9 | — |
Note on non-doctrine-bearing sections: James 1:1 and 4:11–12 were reviewed in full and explicitly found to introduce no new load-bearing doctrinal term beyond material already carried by the nine registered doctrines. They are documented above rather than silently omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate. All other verses in James 1–5 are accounted for under one or more of the nine doctrines listed.
Total requiring human theologian review: 8 doctrines (all Critical + all High) Total requiring native speaker review: 1 doctrine (Taming the Tongue) plus the two non-doctrine-bearing sections noted above Total automated-only: the 1:1 greeting section only
This matrix extends, and must never contradict, the Romans baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json risk tiers for reused terms (вера, спасение, благодать, праведность, оправдание, грех, закон, мир, избрание, Царство Божие, Дух).

Critical Risk Doctrines
Faith and Works
Russian name: Вера и дела
Key terms: faith (вера), works (дела), justification (оправдание), dead faith (мёртвая вера), work together (содействовать), only/alone (только)
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: James 2:14-26 is the curriculum’s core passage and the single most direct textual collision with the Romans baseline’s East-West risk axis. дела/оправдание/содействовать (works/justify/cooperate) are precisely the Russian words used to name and defend Orthodox synergistic soteriology; συνεργέω is the etymological root of синергия, Orthodox theology’s own technical term. Read in isolation, this passage risks being received as scriptural proof of synergism against ‘faith alone,’ or, if over-corrected, having дела softened into mere ‘evidence’ language not present in James’s blunter grammar (ἐξ ἔργων δικαιοῦται, v.24). The curriculum must state its resolution explicitly: James addresses a bare, unproductive faith-claim already assumed to include genuine faith (v.23); Paul addresses works attempted as the ground of a sinner’s initial acceptance before God (Romans 3-4). These answer different questions and must not be silently harmonized or silently left in apparent contradiction.
Prayer and Healing
Russian name: Молитва и исцеление
Key terms: prayer of faith (молитва веры), elders of the church (пресвитеры Церкви), anoint with oil (помазать елеем), heal (исцелить), ask (просить)
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: James 5:14’s practice of elders praying over the sick and anointing with oil in the Lord’s name corresponds directly and unmistakably to the Russian Orthodox sacrament of Елеосвящение/Соборование (Holy Unction), one of the seven mysteries, formally administered only by ordained priests with a fixed liturgical rite. пресвитеры intensifies церковь’s existing High-risk default toward an Orthodox-institution reading (per the Romans baseline church entry), since ‘presbyter’ is itself an Orthodox clerical-hierarchy term. The curriculum must name this Orthodox parallel explicitly and respectfully, distinguishing James’s repeatable, any-elder, non-sacramental practice from the Orthodox sacrament, without denying real common ground in an ancient shared Christian practice or flattening the text into generic ‘just pray for the sick’ language that loses its specific, embodied instruction.
Confession and Restoration
Russian name: Исповедание и восстановление
Key terms: confess sins (исповедовать/признаваться в проступках), turn back/restore (обратить), cover a multitude of sins (покроет множество грехов), save a soul from death (спасет душу от смерти)
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: James 5:16’s ‘confess your sins to one another’ uses the same root as the literal name of the Russian Orthodox sacrament of Исповедь (Confession/Penance), normatively administered by an ordained priest who pronounces formal absolution. A Russian reader will very naturally default to hearing ‘исповедуйте’ as a reference to that sacrament. James, by contrast, describes a mutual, peer-level, non-sacramental practice with no priestly mediator named. The curriculum must explicitly distinguish the two, honoring the real value of sacramental confession in Orthodox tradition while clarifying that James describes something every believer does with any trusted brother or sister. A secondary textual-variant note (проступки vs. грехи, Textus Receptus vs. modern critical text) should be flagged but not treated as a translation error.
High Risk Doctrines
Trials and the Testing of Faith
Russian name: Испытания и проверка веры
Key terms: trial/temptation (искушение), testing (испытание), endurance (терпение), perfect/mature (совершенный)
Review routing: Human theologian
искушение primarily means ‘temptation to sin’ in ordinary Russian usage, risking a jarring or inverted reading of 1:2’s command to ‘count it all joy’ in trials, as if commanding joy at temptation itself. совершенный (1:4) strongly connotes flawless, sinless perfection in ordinary Russian, risking a perfectionist misreading of James’s actual sense (maturity/completeness) that could discourage rather than encourage readers undergoing trials.
Wisdom from Above
Russian name: Премудрость свыше
Key terms: wisdom (мудрость/премудрость), wisdom from above (мудрость свыше), soulish (душевная)
Review routing: Human theologian
Synodal’s own inconsistency between премудрость (1:5) and мудрость (3:13-17) for the identical Greek word risks readers perceiving two different concepts rather than one doctrine. More seriously, ψυχική’s established Synodal rendering душевная is a genuine false friend: in everyday modern Russian душевный is a warm compliment (a sincere, soulful person), while James uses it to name a deficient, unspiritual wisdom one step above demonic. Without a mandatory clarifying gloss at first use, the verse’s meaning is inverted for a Russian reader.
Favoritism and the Poor
Russian name: Пристрастие и бедные
Key terms: favoritism (лицеприятие), rich (богатый), lowly/poor (смиренный/бедный), election (избрал), orphans and widows (сироты и вдовы)
Review routing: Human theologian
лицеприятие is a literary/biblical-register word absent from everyday colloquial speech and needs a plain-language gloss to land with full force. God’s ‘choosing the poor’ (2:5) reuses избрание/избрал, requiring the same forbidden-substitution guard against судьба/рок/карма mandated in the Romans election entry. Care for orphans (1:27) carries unusual cultural weight in post-Soviet Russia given the prominence and negative associations of institutional orphanages (детский дом), requiring pastoral rather than purely lexical handling.
Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Russian name: Дружба с миром против дружбы с Богом
Key terms: world (мир), friendship with the world (дружба с миром), enmity with God (вражда против Бога), humble yourselves (смиритесь), if the Lord wills (если угодно будет Господу)
Review routing: Human theologian
мир’s double sense (the fallen world-system vs. ordinary ‘peace,’ already flagged in the Romans baseline) becomes especially acute at 4:4’s stark antithesis, which must not be softened into a statement about literal peace-making. James’s charge of being ‘adulteresses’ (covenant-unfaithfulness idiom from OT prophetic marriage imagery) risks being read by a literal-minded modern or secular reader as a narrow claim about sexual sin rather than James’s intended charge of disloyalty to God. 4:15’s ‘if the Lord wills’ also risks flattening into the fatalistic folk cliché ‘как Бог даст’ if not handled with the same care as the Romans providence entry.
Patience and the Lord’s Return
Russian name: Терпение и пришествие Господа
Key terms: patience/long-suffering (долготерпеть), coming of the Lord (пришествие Господне), judge at the door (судия у дверей), patience of Job (терпение Иова)
Review routing: Human theologian
долготерпение (μακροθυμία) and терпение (ὑπομονή, reused from ch.1) name related but lexically distinct concepts that must remain distinguishable in Russian while the curriculum teaches them as facets of one doctrine — even Synodal itself alternates between the two terms within 5:10-11. пришествие Господне without an explicit qualifier such as второе (‘second’) risks ambiguity with Christ’s first coming/incarnation, since пришествие alone is used in some traditions for the incarnation as well.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Taming the Tongue
Russian name: Укрощение языка
Key terms: tongue (язык), tame (укротить), oaths (клясться)
Review routing: Native speaker review
язык’s dual meaning (‘tongue’/‘language’) is disambiguated easily by context throughout ch.3. Main residual risk is registerial: ensuring the vivid nature-imagery (bit, rudder, spring, fig tree, fire) retains its full rhetorical force in modern literary Russian rather than reading as a flattened moral maxim.
