Semantic Analysis — Revelation (Full Book) for Russian
Method and Governing Constraints
- All terms already recorded in the baseline Romans
translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.jsonare reused exactly with their established Russian rendering, risk tier, and rationale (e.g. Бог, Господь, Иисус, Христос, Святой Дух, святые, церковь, вера, благодать, слава, спасение, Царство Божие, грех, завет, пророк/пророчество, воскресение, избрание, Отец, Авва, апостол). These are not re-litigated below except where Revelation’s usage adds a new nuance. - Revelation’s dominant new risk axis, layered on top of the Romans baseline’s East-West (synergism/theosis vs. forensic) axis, is: (1) genre-flattening — apocalyptic/symbolic language collapsing into either literalism or into secular “apocalypse” pop-culture tropes (zombie films, doomsday countdowns, Armageddon-as-cliché) that are extremely productive loanwords in contemporary Russian media; (2) specific lexical collisions with named, currently active Russian religious and legal categories — most importantly свидетель/свидетельство (“witness”/“testimony”) colliding with Свидетели Иеговы (Jehovah’s Witnesses, an organization banned as “extremist” in the Russian Federation since 2017), невеста Христова (“bride of Christ”) colliding with the Orthodox monastic-tonsure title reserved for nuns, and Новый Иерусалим colliding with a real, well-known Russian place-name (the Ново-Иерусалимский монастырь near Moscow); and (3) millennial/eschatological framework divergence, where the historic Orthodox amillennial/recapitulation reading of Revelation 20 sits in real tension with popular Western premillennial/dispensational readings this curriculum may assume.
- Every chapter of Revelation 1-22 is analyzed below. Chapters that introduce no new load-bearing vocabulary beyond terms already treated state this explicitly per PRD mandate.
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Revelation 21:1-8
Revelation 21:1
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| new καινός, kainos new in kind/quality, not merely recent | qualitatively new, fresh, unprecedented (contrast neos = new in time/age) “new,” “renewed” | Signals a new order of creation, not simply a repaired or repeated one; ties to 2 Cor 5:17, Isa 65:17 | новый (novyy). Risk: Medium. Standard Russian новый does not lexically distinguish kainos (qualitative) from neos (temporal); expository text must state explicitly that “new” here means a fundamentally renewed order of creation, not merely “another one” or “next in sequence,” to prevent readers hearing “the next heaven and earth” rather than “heaven and earth remade.” |
| heaven οὐρανός, ouranos sky, heaven(s) | physical sky; abode of God; the created heavens as a whole ”heaven,” “sky,” “the heavens” | The visible created cosmos, now passing away and replaced | небо (nebo). Risk: Low. Already stable in Bible Russian; no rival cosmology competes as in some non-creedal-heritage languages. |
| earth γῆ, gē ground, land, earth (planet) | soil; a specific land; the whole created earth ”earth,” “land,” “world” | The created physical earth, now passing away and replaced | земля (zemlya). Risk: Low. |
| the first πρῶτος, prōtos first, former | first in a sequence; former/previous state ”first,” “former,” “original” | The old created order under sin’s curse, now superseded | прежний / первый (prezhniy / pervyy). Risk: Low. |
| sea θάλασσα, thalassa sea, ocean | literal sea; in apocalyptic idiom, source of chaos and the beast (13:1) “sea" | "No more sea” is symbolic: removal of the chaotic, beast-generating abyss of the old order, not a literal claim about future hydrology | море (more). Risk: Medium. Risk that readers demand strict literalism (“will there really be no ocean?”) and miss the symbolic register tied to Rev 13:1’s sea-beast and Dan 7’s chaos-sea background; expository text must flag this as apocalyptic symbol, reinforcing the doctrine of Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation established at 1:1 (see below). |
Revelation 21:2
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| holy city πόλις ἁγία, polis hagia set-apart city | the corporate dwelling-place of God’s people, contrasted with Babylon (ch. 17-18) “holy city,” “the Holy City” | The consummated, sanctified community of God’s people, not merely a geographic capital | святой город (svyatoy gorod). Risk: Medium. святой inherits the same risk documented in the Romans baseline for “holy”/“saints” — an association with a formally canonized, venerated category rather than the whole redeemed community; here it must be read corporately as the church glorified, not a shrine city. |
| Jerusalem Ἰερουσαλήμ, Ierousalēm Jerusalem (proper name) | earthly historical city; heavenly/eschatological city (Gal 4:26, Heb 12:22) “Jerusalem,” “the New Jerusalem” | The consummated dwelling of God with his redeemed people; contrasted with the “Babylon” of the beast’s world-system | Иерусалим (Ierusalim), compound Новый Иерусалим (Novyy Ierusalim). Risk: High. Russian readers — including secular ones — will very likely associate “Новый Иерусалим” first with the actual, famous Ново-Иерусалимский монастырь (New Jerusalem Monastery) near Moscow, built by Patriarch Nikon in the 17th century as a symbolic replica of the Holy Land. Expository text must explicitly distinguish John’s eschatological, descending-from-heaven city from this well-known domestic monastic site, or readers will silently substitute a familiar concrete place for the text’s cosmic-eschatological referent. |
| descending καταβαίνουσαν, katabainousan coming down, descending | to move from a higher to lower place; of divine action, coming from heaven to earth ”coming down,” “descending” | God’s dwelling comes to creation; not humanity ascending to escape earth, but heaven coming down to renewed earth | сходящий/сходящую (skhodyashchiy). Risk: Medium. Must preserve the directionality (down, from God, to a renewed earth) against a popular “escape to heaven” misreading that would reverse Revelation’s actual eschatological direction — earth is renewed and heaven comes down, not humanity evacuated upward permanently. |
| bride νύμφη, nymphē bride, young wife | a woman betrothed/newly married; used figuratively for God’s people in relation to Christ ”bride,” “the bride” | The corporate church in her consummated, glorified relationship with Christ (doctrine: Church as Bride of Christ) | невеста (nevesta). Risk: High. In Russian Orthodox monastic practice, “невеста Христова” (“bride of Christ”) is a specific, well-known title given to a woman at her monastic tonsure (postrig) — i.e., it is culturally heard as referring to nuns, an ascetic minority, exactly parallel to the “saints” collision already documented in the Romans baseline. Expository text must state explicitly and repeatedly that in Revelation the Bride is the whole church corporately, not a consecrated subset. |
| adorned κεκοσμημένην, kekosmēmenēn adorned, decorated, made beautiful | ordered, arranged, beautified (root of kosmos, “order/world”) “adorned,” “beautifully dressed” | The church presented in the beauty and righteousness given her, not self-achieved (cf. 19:8, “the righteous deeds of the saints” as the fine linen granted her) | украшенная (ukrashennaya). Risk: Low. |
| husband ἀνήρ, anēr man, husband | adult male; specifically husband in marital context ”husband” | Christ as the bridegroom of the church | муж (muzh). Risk: Low. |
Revelation 21:3
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| throne θρόνος, thronos throne, seat of authority | royal/judicial seat; God’s/Christ’s sovereign seat throughout Revelation ”throne” | The seat of God’s sovereign rule over history (doctrine: Sovereignty of God over History), from which the consummation is announced | престол (prestol). Risk: Medium. престол is the standard, correct term, but is also the technical name for the altar table inside an Orthodox church sanctuary (the “холy table”); this liturgical-furniture sense is a mild asset (conveys sacred, central authority) but expository text should keep the referent clearly the cosmic/royal throne of God, not the parish altar. |
| tabernacle/dwelling σκηνή, skēnē (noun) / σκηνώσει, skēnōsei (verb) tent, tabernacle / “will pitch his tent,” “will dwell” | the OT tent of meeting; God’s dwelling presence; in John’s Gospel (1:14) used of the Word’s incarnate dwelling among humanity ”tabernacle,” “dwelling,” “he will dwell/tabernacle” | God’s own covenantal presence permanently and bodily among his people — the goal toward which the whole OT tabernacle/temple system pointed | скиния (skiniya, noun) / будет обитать (budet obitat’, verb). Risk: Low-Medium. скиния is a stable, established OT-continuity term already familiar from the Pentateuch in Synodal usage — a genuine asset bracketing the whole canon (tabernacle in Exodus, God dwelling with humanity here). Minor risk: обитать is fairly generic “to dwell/reside” and can lose the incarnational resonance of skēnoō (cf. John 1:14) unless a footnote ties the verb to Christ’s own “tabernacling” among us. |
| peoples λαοί, laoi (plural in the best texts) peoples, nations | ethnic groups/nations, plural — deliberately not singular “people" "peoples,” “his people” | The redeemed drawn from every nation (cf. 5:9; 7:9), not one ethnic group | народы (narody). Risk: Medium. Must render as plural “народы” where the text supports it, to preserve the multi-ethnic, multi-national scope of redemption (doctrine: Universal Scope, echoing the Romans baseline’s “gentiles/nations” note); a flattening to singular “народ” risks implying a single covenant-ethnic people rather than the ingathered nations. |
| God (with them) θεός, theos God | the one true God ”God” | The immediate, unmediated presence of God himself with his people, the final resolution of the covenant formula “I will be their God, they will be my people” | Бог (Bog) — baseline term, reused exactly. Risk: Medium (per baseline). |
Revelation 21:4
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| wipe away ἐξαλείψει, exaleipsei to wipe off, erase, obliterate | erase completely, blot out (also used of erasing debt/record) “wipe away,” “will wipe away” | God’s own tender, decisive personal action removing all sorrow — echoes Isa 25:8 | отрёт (otryot, from отереть). Risk: Low. Standard Synodal verb, tender and personal register preserved. |
| tear δάκρυον, dakryon tear (from weeping) | literal tears; figuratively, grief ”tear,” “tears” | Every sorrow of the old order personally and finally removed by God | слеза (sleza). Risk: Low. |
| death θάνατος, thanatos death | physical death; personified “Death” (as in 6:8, 20:14); spiritual/eternal death ”death” | The final abolition of death itself as an enemy (cf. 1 Cor 15:26), distinct from the “second death” of v.8 | смерть (smert’). Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished carefully in surrounding exposition from the “second death” (смерть вторая, v.8) and from ад/Hades (the intermediate state, 20:13-14) — Russian смерть alone does not signal which of these three related-but-distinct Revelation concepts is meant; context must disambiguate. |
| mourning πένθος, penthos mourning, grief | ritual or personal mourning, grief for loss ”mourning,” “grief” | Communal and personal grief abolished in the consummated kingdom | плач (plach). Risk: Low. |
| crying κραυγή, kraugē crying out, outcry | a loud cry (of distress, anguish, or alarm) “crying,” “outcry,” “wailing” | Anguished outcry under the old order’s suffering, now silenced by comfort | вопль/крик (vopl’/krik). Risk: Low. |
| pain πόνος, ponos pain, labor, toil | physical or emotional pain, laborious suffering ”pain,” “suffering” | All suffering rooted in the old, fallen order removed | боль (bol’). Risk: Low. |
| the former things τὰ πρῶτα, ta prōta the first/former things | the old created order, in contrast to the “new” of v.1, v.5 ”the former things,” “the old order” | The entire fallen created order that has now passed away, making room for the “new” | прежнее (prezhneye). Risk: Low. |
Revelation 21:5
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| the one seated on the throne ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ, ho kathēmenos epi tō thronō the one sitting upon the throne | a recurring Revelation title for God himself (4:2,9; 5:1,7,13; 21:5) “he who was seated on the throne,” “the one who sits on the throne” | God’s continuous, active sovereign rule; the speaker of the consummation-announcement is God himself, not an intermediary | Сидящий на престоле (Sidyashchiy na prestole). Risk: Medium. Established participial title through Revelation; must be rendered identically at every occurrence (4:2, 4:9, 5:1, 5:7, 5:13, 20:11, 21:5) for literary/liturgical consistency, per the baseline’s “same rendering across all documents” consistency rule. |
| I am making ποιῶ, poiō (present tense) I make, I do | to make, create, do, perform ”I am making,” “I make” | Present-tense, ongoing/climactic divine creative act — God himself, not a cosmic process, remakes all things | творю (tvoryu). Risk: Low-Medium. творю carries strong creation-theology register (root shared with “Творец,” Creator) — an asset, reinforcing that this is an act of the Creator, not impersonal cosmic evolution or fate. |
| write Γράψον, Grapson (imperative) Write! | command to record in writing ”Write,” “Write this down” | Divine commissioning of John as an authoritative scribe of revelation, reinforcing the book’s status as inspired Scripture (doctrine: Inspiration, cf. Romans baseline) | напиши (napishi). Risk: Low. |
| faithful and true πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί, pistoi kai alēthinoi trustworthy and true/genuine | reliable, dependable (πιστός) + real, genuine, not false (ἀληθινός) “faithful and true,” “trustworthy and true” | The absolute reliability of God’s own promissory word — this description is elsewhere applied to Christ himself (19:11, “Faithful and True”) | верны и истинны (verny i istinny). Risk: Medium. πιστός here reuses the root of “вера/faith” (baseline term) — must be rendered so readers hear the connection between trusting God’s character (faithful) and trusting his words (these words are faithful); do not let ἀληθινός collapse into a bare “correct” (правильны) which would lose the ontological “real/genuine” sense (as opposed to illusory or counterfeit — a key Revelation contrast with the counterfeit beast/dragon system). |
Revelation 21:6
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| It is done Γέγοναν, Gegonan (perfect tense) “They have happened / it is accomplished” | completed, settled, finished action with ongoing results (perfect tense) “It is done,” “It has come to pass,” “It is finished” | The consummation is not merely predicted but accomplished — parallel to Christ’s “it is finished” (τετέλεσται) at the cross (John 19:30), the same certainty now extended to final consummation | Совершилось (Sovershilos’). Risk: Medium. Synodal renders this with the same verbal root as John 19:30’s “Совершилось!”, which is a strong asset — Russian readers should be guided to hear the deliberate echo: the same divine “it is accomplished” that secured the cross now secures the new creation. If translated with a different, unrelated verb, this cross-book echo (Assurance of God’s Final Victory) is lost. |
| Alpha and Omega Ἄλφα καὶ Ὦ, Alpha kai Ō first and last letters of the Greek alphabet | idiom for total comprehensiveness, “A to Z" "Alpha and Omega,” “the First and the Last” | God’s absolute sovereignty over the entirety of history from beginning to end (doctrine: Sovereignty of God over History) | Альфа и Омега (Al’fa i Omega). Risk: Low-Medium. Transliteration is fully established Synodal usage. Minor explanatory risk: the Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet’s own first/last letters (А…Я) are not being invoked, so the idiom’s “edge-of-the-alphabet = totality” logic requires a one-time gloss for readers unfamiliar with the Greek alphabet, rather than assuming the image is self-evident. |
| beginning and end ἀρχὴ καὶ τέλος, archē kai telos origin/source and goal/completion | ἀρχή = beginning, origin, ruling principle; τέλος = end, goal, completion, purpose ”the beginning and the end” | Restates Alpha/Omega in transparent Russian terms — God as both source and consummating goal of history | начало и конец (nachalo i konets). Risk: Low. |
| thirsty διψῶντι, dipsōnti one who thirsts | literal or figurative desire/longing, need ”the one who thirsts,” “whoever is thirsty” | Spiritual longing/need that only God himself satisfies (echoes John 4, 7:37) | жаждущему (zhazhdushchemu). Risk: Low. |
| spring of the water of life πηγὴ τοῦ ὕδατος τῆς ζωῆς, pēgē tou hydatos tēs zōēs fountain/spring of the water of life | source of life-giving water, echoing Eden’s rivers (Gen 2) and Ezekiel 47 ”spring/fountain of the water of life” | The consummated, eternal, freely-given life of God himself, available without price | источник воды жизни (istochnik vody zhizni). Risk: Low. Strong OT bracket-continuity asset (Eden, Ezekiel, John 4 and 7). |
| freely / as a gift δωρεάν, dōrean freely, without cost, as a gift | gratuitously, without payment or merit — shares the root of dōrea/charis-family vocabulary ”freely,” “as a gift,” “without cost” | Direct echo of the grace-not-works pattern central to salvation doctrine (Romans baseline: благодать); the final gift of eternal life is unmerited, exactly as its beginning was | даром (darom). Risk: High. Because this shares the semantic root of “дар/gift” with благодать (grace, Critical risk in the Romans baseline), this is a prime location to reinforce — not silently assume — the “apart from works” pattern: exposition should explicitly connect this verse’s даром to the grace-not-merit teaching already flagged Critical in Romans, preventing readers from reading final consummation as a reward earned through sacramental participation or ascetic achievement rather than as gift. |
Revelation 21:7
Greek: ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός.
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| the one who overcomes ὁ νικῶν, ho nikōn the one conquering/prevailing | victor, one who wins/prevails in conflict; the recurring refrain-title of the seven letters (ch. 2-3) and of 12:11, 15:2 ”the one who overcomes,” “the victor,” “the conqueror” | Believers who persevere in faithful witness under persecution to the end (doctrine: Perseverance and Faithful Witness) — not moral perfection but persevering allegiance to Christ despite the cost | побеждающий (pobezhdayushchiy). Risk: High. This is the single most theologically load-bearing recurring term outside the core passage (occurs 7x as refrain in ch. 2-3, plus 12:11, 15:2, 21:7). Must be rendered with the identical participial form throughout the whole book for literary/catechetical consistency (per baseline cross-document consistency rules). Risk of being misheard as moral self-achievement (winning by one’s own strength) rather than Christ-empowered perseverance in testimony (cf. 12:11, “they conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony”) — exposition must state explicitly that victory is Christ’s, appropriated through persevering faith, not human heroism. |
| will inherit κληρονομήσει, klēronomēsei will inherit, receive as an heir | to receive an allotted inheritance/portion ”will inherit,” “will receive as inheritance” | Full inheritance status, echoing adoption/heir language already Critical/High in the Romans baseline (усыновление) | наследует (nasleduyet). Risk: Medium. Should be read alongside the Romans baseline’s adoption note: this is full inheritance, not provisional or partial reward, countering any post-Soviet institutional-charity undertone that might otherwise attach to “family incorporation” language. |
| son υἱός, huios son | legal/familial son, with inheritance rights (distinct from τέκνον, mere “child”) “son,” “child” (inclusive sense intended for all believers, male and female) | Full filial standing with God as Father, echoing Romans 8’s adoption theology | сын (syn) — baseline-consistent usage (cf. Сын Божий, Отец). Risk: Medium. As in the Romans baseline’s adoption note, exposition should clarify this is a corporate, inclusive filial status (all overcomers, not literal male children only), avoiding any reading that would exclude women believers from the promise. |
Revelation 21:8
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| cowardly δειλοί, deiloi fearful, cowardly | timid, fearful, lacking courage — here specifically fear that leads to denial/apostasy under pressure ”cowardly,” “the fearful” | Failure of persevering witness under persecution (the negative counterpart to ὁ νικῶν, v.7), not mere personality timidity | боязливые (boyazlivyye). Risk: Medium. Must be read as denial of Christ under pressure, not a psychological trait; risk of moralizing this into ordinary shyness rather than apostasy-under-persecution, the doctrine directly at stake. |
| unbelieving ἄπιστοι, apistoi faithless, unbelieving | lacking πίστις/faith; here, those who refuse to trust Christ ”unbelieving,” “faithless” | The direct negative of вера (faith), a baseline High-risk term; final judgment falls on refusal of Christ-directed trust | неверные (nevernyye). Risk: High (shares the baseline’s вера risk profile in reverse). |
| detestable / abominable ἐβδελυγμένοι, ebdelygmenoi those who are abhorrent/detestable | morally repulsive, defiled (often used of idolatrous practice in LXX) “the vile,” “the detestable,” “the abominable” | Moral corruption bound up with idolatry and the beast’s system | скверные (skvernyye) / отвратительные. Risk: Low. |
| murderers φονεῖς, phoneis murderers | those who commit unlawful killing ”murderers” | Serious moral evil excluded from the new creation | убийцы (ubiytsy). Risk: Low. |
| sexually immoral πόρνοι, pornoi those who engage in sexual immorality | fornicators, the sexually immoral (also used figuratively of idolatrous “spiritual adultery,” cf. πόρνη/Babylon ch. 17) “the sexually immoral,” “fornicators” | Both literal immorality and, in Revelation’s wider argument, complicity with Babylon’s idolatrous seduction | блудники (bludniki). Risk: Medium. Shares the root of блудница (harlot/Babylon, ch. 17) — a deliberate literary link worth preserving so readers connect personal sin with systemic idolatrous allegiance to the beast’s world-order. |
| sorcerers φαρμακοί, pharmakoi sorcerers, those who practice magic/poisoning (root of “pharmacy”) | practitioners of magic arts, potions, sorcery ”sorcerers,” “those who practice magic arts” | Occult practice as a form of idolatrous rebellion against God’s sole sovereignty | чародеи/волхвы (charodei / volkhvy). Risk: High. Directly intersects live, prominent post-Soviet folk-occult culture already flagged in the Romans baseline for “spiritual gifts” (экстрасенсы, folk healers, television psychics) — this verse gives Revelation’s own explicit negative judgment on that entire practice-category, which should be made pastorally explicit rather than left as an archaic-sounding word. |
| idolaters εἰδωλολάτραι, eidōlolatrai idol-worshippers | those who worship images/idols instead of God ”idolaters” | Ultimate allegiance given to the beast/image rather than to God — connects directly to ch.13’s “image of the beast” (εἰκών τοῦ θηρίου) | идолослужители (idoloslzhiteli). Risk: Medium. See ch. 13 note below on the “образ зверя” collision with Orthodox icon-theology vocabulary; this term itself is low-risk, but its conceptual pairing with “image of the beast” elsewhere in the book requires careful handling. |
| liars ψευδεῖς, pseudeis liars, the false | those characterized by falsehood; opposite of ἀληθινός (“true,” v.5) “liars,” “all who are false/false-speaking” | The direct antithesis of God’s own “faithful and true” (v.5) character — a deliberate literary contrast | лжецы (lzhetsy). Risk: Low. |
| lake of fire and sulfur λίμνη καιομένη πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ, limnē kaiomenē pyri kai theiō lake burning with fire and sulfur (brimstone) | place of final, conscious judgment (also 19:20, 20:10,14-15) “lake of fire,” “lake of fire and brimstone” | Final, eschatological judgment of the wicked, distinct from ᾅδης/Hades (the intermediate holding place, 20:13) — the final destiny, not an intermediate one | озеро огненное (ozero ognennoye), with “горящее огнём и серою” (goryashcheye ognyom i seroyu) as the fuller established Synodal phrase. Risk: High. Must be kept terminologically distinct from ад (Hades, the intermediate state, 1:18, 6:8, 20:13-14) in exposition, since ordinary Russian “ад” flattens both into a single generic “hell,” obscuring Revelation’s careful two-stage judgment sequence (doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked). |
| second death ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος, ho thanatos ho deuteros the second death | final, eternal separation from God, following bodily death and the resurrection-judgment of ch. 20 ”the second death” | The ultimate, final judgment outcome for the unrepentant, contrasted with the “first resurrection” reserved for the redeemed (20:5-6) | смерть вторая (smert’ vtoraya). Risk: High. Established Synodal phrase (used identically at 2:11, 20:6, 20:14, 21:8) — consistency across all four occurrences is essential; must not be confused with, or substituted by, ordinary смерть (physical death, v.4) in exposition, since the entire logic of chapters 20-21 depends on the reader distinguishing the two. |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 — Prologue, Vision of the Glorified Christ
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| revelation/apocalypse ἀποκάλυψις, apokalypsis unveiling, uncovering, disclosure | ”revelation,” “apocalypse” | The book’s own genre-title: an authoritative disclosure of hidden divine realities, given by Christ (1:1), not a human speculative text | откровение (otkroveniye). Risk: Critical. The Synodal book title itself is “Откровение Иоанна Богослова,” but the transliterated loanword “апокалипсис” is extremely productive in secular Russian media (disaster films, “зомби-апокалипсис,” casual doomsday talk) and risks priming readers toward a pop-cultural catastrophe-genre expectation rather than a Christ-given disclosure of God’s sovereign purposes. Exposition must state plainly that откровение means an unveiling by Christ, not a doomsday screenplay, right from ch. 1. |
| signified / made known by signs ἐσήμανεν, esēmanen (root σημαίνω) to signify, indicate by symbol/sign | ”made it known,” “signified,” “communicated in signs” | Establishes from v.1 that the whole book communicates through symbol, not flat narrative report — the interpretive key for the entire book (doctrine: Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation) | показал (Synodal) / more precisely дал знать знамениями (gave to know through signs). Risk: High. The Synodal “показал” (showed) flattens σημαίνω’s distinctive “communicated through signs/symbols” nuance; if this nuance is lost at 1:1, readers default to over-literalizing the visions that follow (dragons, bowls, numbers) rather than reading them as a coherent symbolic idiom, undermining the book’s own stated interpretive method. |
| Almighty παντοκράτωρ, pantokratōr ruler of all, all-powerful one | ”Almighty,” “the All-Ruling One” | God’s/Christ’s total sovereign rule over history and creation (doctrine: Sovereignty of God over History) | Вседержитель (Vsederzhitel’). Risk: Medium. Strong existing asset: this is the standard Russian Orthodox iconographic and liturgical title (Спас Вседержитель, “Christ Pantocrator”) — cultural resonance here works for the text rather than against it, but exposition should still connect the title to its Revelation-specific argument (God’s rule over the very persecution and chaos the readers are experiencing), not leave it as a purely devotional-artistic reference. |
| who is, who was, who is to come ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος the Being-One and the Was-One and the Coming-One | ”who is and who was and who is to come” | Echoes the divine name revealed to Moses (Exod 3:14 LXX ὁ ὤν) — God’s eternal self-existence and lordship over all time | Который есть и был и грядёт (Kotoryy yest’ i byl i gryadyot). Risk: High. Requires exposition connecting this triple formula explicitly to the Exodus divine-name tradition, since the connection is not self-evident from the Russian phrase alone; this is foundational to the doctrine of God’s sovereignty over history that frames the entire book. |
| firstborn of the dead πρωτότοκος τῶν νεκρῶν first-born from among the dead | ”firstborn from the dead,” “first to rise from the dead” | Christ’s resurrection as the pattern and guarantee of believers’ own future resurrection | первенец из мёртвых (pervenets iz myortvykh). Risk: Medium. Reuses/extends the baseline’s воскресение (resurrection, Medium risk) framework; should connect explicitly to Romans 6’s resurrection theology already established in the Language Package. |
| lampstand λυχνία, lychnia lampstand | ”lampstand” | The seven churches as light-bearing witnesses (cf. Zech 4) | светильник (svetil’nik). Risk: Low. |
| key of Death and Hades κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾅδου key of Death and Hades | ”the keys of Death and Hades” | Christ’s absolute sovereign authority even over death and the realm of the dead | ключи смерти и ада (klyuchi smerti i ada). Risk: Medium. See ad/Hades note under 21:8 above — ад here denotes the intermediate state Christ has conquered, not the final lake of fire; keep distinct in exposition. |
Chapters 2-3 — Letters to the Seven Churches
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| the one who overcomes ὁ νικῶν see 21:7 above — first occurrences here (2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,12,21) | “the one who conquers/overcomes” | The refrain-title rewarding persevering, faithful witness in each of the seven letters | побеждающий — see full note at 21:7. Risk: High. Consistency across all nine occurrences (2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,12,21; plus 12:11, 15:2, 21:7) is mandatory. |
| tribulation θλῖψις, thlipsis pressure, affliction, tribulation | ”tribulation,” “affliction,” “suffering” | Present, ongoing persecution suffered by believers for their witness (doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution) | скорбь (skorb’). Risk: Medium. Standard Bible-Russian term; register risk is the same folk-flattening the Romans baseline notes for грех — “скорбь” can sound like ordinary sadness in casual usage; exposition should anchor it to actual persecution context (imprisonment, martyrdom, economic exclusion, cf. 2:9-10). |
| second death ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος first occurrence at 2:11 | see full note at 21:8 | Consistency required from first occurrence onward | смерть вторая — see note at 21:8. |
| tree of life ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς tree of life | ”tree of life” | Restoration of Edenic access (Gen 2-3), lost through sin, now regained through Christ’s victory | древо жизни (drevo zhizni). Risk: Low. Strong Genesis-to-Revelation canonical bracket; an asset, not a risk. |
| hidden manna μάννα κεκρυμμένον hidden manna | ”hidden manna” | Christ himself as the true, sustaining bread of life kept for the overcomer | сокровенная манна (sokrovennaya manna). Risk: Low. |
| morning star ἀστὴρ ὁ πρωϊνός the morning star | ”morning star” | A messianic title (cf. 22:16), promised to the overcomer as participation in Christ’s own authority | звезда утренняя (zvezda utrennyaya). Risk: Medium. Should be distinguished in exposition from any astrological reading of “stars” given the live post-Soviet horoscope culture already flagged in the Romans baseline (prophecy vs. horoscope note). |
| synagogue of Satan συναγωγὴ τοῦ Σατανᾶ assembly/synagogue of Satan | ”synagogue of Satan” | A polemical description of specific opponents in Smyrna/Philadelphia, not a blanket statement about Judaism as such | сборище сатанинское (sborishche sataninskoye, Synodal). Risk: High. Given the Romans baseline’s explicit flag on antisemitism sensitivity in the Russian historical context (unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine), this phrase requires careful pastoral framing so it is not read as generalized anti-Jewish polemic; it refers to specific local hostile opponents of the gospel in a first-century context, not to Jewish people as such. |
| Jezebel / Balaam Ἰεζάβελ, Βαλαάμ proper names (OT false-teacher figures) | “Jezebel,” “Balaam” | Typological names for false teaching/compromise within the church | Иезавель / Валаам (Iyezavel’ / Valaam). Risk: Low. Established Synodal OT proper-name forms. |
| I am he who searches hearts and minds ὁ ἐρευνῶν νεφροὺς καὶ καρδίας searcher of kidneys/inward parts and hearts | ”he who searches hearts and minds” | God’s/Christ’s omniscient knowledge of inward motive, grounding his just judgment | испытующий сердца и внутренности (ispytuyushchiy serdtsa i vnutrennosti). Risk: Low. |
| crown of life στέφανος τῆς ζωῆς wreath/victor’s crown of life | ”crown of life” | The reward of persevering faithfulness — see full διάδημα/στέφανος distinction at ch. 12-19 below | венец жизни (venets zhizni). Risk: Medium. See fuller note on венец vs. диадима under ch. 12 and 19. |
| key of David κλείς Δαυίδ key of David | ”key of David” | Christ’s messianic authority to open/close access to God’s kingdom (cf. Isa 22:22) | ключ Давидов (klyuch Davidov). Risk: Low. Reuses baseline “David” (Давид) proper-name form. |
Chapter 4 — The Throne Room Vision
No entirely new theological doctrines beyond what chs. 1-3 established, but several new load-bearing worship-vocabulary terms appear:
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holy, Holy, Holy Ἅγιος ἅγιος ἅγιος thrice-repeated “holy" | "Holy, Holy, Holy” | The Trisagion-form angelic worship declaring God’s total, triune holiness (Isa 6:3) | Свят, Свят, Свят (Svyat, Svyat, Svyat). Risk: Low-Medium. Strong existing asset: this exact triple form is already deeply embedded in Orthodox liturgy (the “Трисвятое”/Trisagion hymn), giving Russian readers an immediate, resonant point of contact; minor risk is over-familiarity flattening it into rote liturgical recitation rather than the living, awe-struck worship depicted in the text. |
| twenty-four elders εἴκοσι τέσσαρες πρεσβύτεροι twenty-four elders | ”twenty-four elders” | Representative heavenly worship-leaders (variously understood as representing the redeemed people of both covenants) | двадцать четыре старца (dvadtsat’ chetyre startsa). Risk: Low. Note: старец also carries a specific and highly venerated meaning in Russian Orthodox spirituality (a monastic spiritual elder/starets, e.g. the Optina elders) — a mild asset of dignity, but exposition should clarify these are the twenty-four heavenly elders of Revelation’s vision, not an allusion to the historical Orthodox eldership tradition. |
| four living creatures τέσσαρα ζῷα four living beings/creatures | ”four living creatures” | Cherubim-like heavenly worship-beings (echoing Ezekiel 1, Isaiah 6) | четыре животных (chetyre zhivotnykh, Synodal). Risk: Low. |
| glory and honor δόξα καὶ τιμή glory and honor | ”glory and honor” | Worship-vocabulary directed to God as Creator | слава и честь (slava i chest’). Risk: Medium. слава reuses baseline term (Medium risk per Romans baseline’s note on registerial flattening into casual exclamation); here in a sustained worship-liturgy context, exposition should restore full theological weight (doctrine: Worship of the Lamb/God). |
Chapter 5 — The Scroll and the Lamb
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lamb ἀρνίον, arnion little lamb (diminutive form, used ~28x in Revelation) | “Lamb,” “the Lamb” | Christ as the once-slain, now-triumphant sacrificial king — Revelation’s central Christological title (doctrine: Worship of the Lamb) | Агнец (Agnets). Risk: High. Deeply established across both Orthodox liturgy (the Eucharistic bread portion is itself called “Агнец” in the proskomedia) and Protestant hymnody (“Агнец Божий”) — a strong shared asset, but this dual liturgical embedding creates real risk that “Агнец” is heard as referring narrowly to the Eucharistic elements/ritual rather than to Revelation’s cosmic, reigning, wrath-and-worthy-to-judge Christological title; exposition must consistently pair “Агнец” with Revelation’s own triumphant register (worthy to open the scroll, wrath of the Lamb, marriage of the Lamb, throne of the Lamb) so the title is not domesticated into sacramental-object status alone. |
| worthy ἄξιος, axios worthy, deserving | ”worthy” | The Lamb’s unique qualification, by virtue of his sacrificial death, to execute God’s redemptive-judicial plan | достоин (dostoin). Risk: Low. Already familiar from shared hymnody (“Достоин Агнец…”). |
| Lion of the tribe of Judah λέων ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰούδα lion from the tribe of Judah | ”the Lion of the tribe of Judah” | Messianic Davidic kingship title (Gen 49:9-10) | Лев от колена Иудина (Lev ot kolena Iudina). Risk: Low. Established Synodal OT-continuity phrasing. |
| root of David ῥίζα Δαυίδ root of David | ”Root of David” | Messianic descent-and-source title (Isa 11:1,10) — the Lamb is simultaneously David’s descendant and David’s source, a deliberate paradox of Christ’s full humanity and full deity | корень Давидов (koren’ Davidov). Risk: Medium. Reinforces the Romans baseline’s “seed of David”/incarnation doctrine notes; exposition should draw out the human/divine paradox explicitly. |
| slain ἐσφαγμένον, esphagmenon slaughtered, sacrificially slain | ”as though slain,” “who was slain” | The permanent marks of Christ’s sacrificial death remain visible even in his risen, glorified, reigning state | как бы закланный (kak by zaklannyy). Risk: Medium. Should be connected explicitly to atonement/sacrifice categories (cf. Romans 3:25’s propitiation, flagged for theologian review in the baseline) rather than left as a purely visual/artistic detail. |
| new song ᾆσμα καινόν new song | ”a new song” | Worship uniquely fitting the Lamb’s unprecedented redemptive act | новая песнь (novaya pesn’). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 6 — The Four Horsemen and the Fifth/Sixth Seals
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| seal σφραγίς, sphragis seal (wax/signet seal) | “seal” | Both a literal scroll-seal and, elsewhere (ch. 7), God’s protective mark on his people — must be distinguished from the beast’s χάραγμα (“mark,” ch. 13) | печать (pechat’). Risk: High. See full note under ch. 7 and ch. 13 below: печать (God’s seal, protective/ownership) vs. начертание (the beast’s mark, ch. 13) must never be confused or rendered with overlapping vocabulary, since the two are the book’s central positive/negative symbolic contrast. |
| Hades ᾅδης, hadēs Hades, realm of the dead | ”Hades,” “the grave” | The intermediate holding-place of the dead, personified alongside Death in 6:8 | ад (ad). Risk: Medium. See note at 21:8/ch.1 above — distinguish from the final “lake of fire.” |
| souls of those slain ψυχαὶ τῶν ἐσφαγμένων souls of the slaughtered | ”souls of those who had been slain” | Martyrs’ cry for divine justice, grounding the doctrine of Vindication of the Saints | души убиенных (dushi ubiyennykh). Risk: Medium. убиенный is a somewhat liturgical/elevated register word in Russian (used of martyrs commemorated in Orthodox prayers) — a mild asset conveying appropriate gravity. |
| how long? ἕως πότε until when? how long? | “how long?” | The martyrs’ cry for God to vindicate and judge — direct doctrinal link to Judgment of the Wicked/Vindication of the Saints | доколе? (dokole?). Risk: Low. Established archaic-register Synodal interrogative. |
| avenge ἐκδικεῖς, ekdikeis (root ἐκδικέω) to avenge, execute justice for, vindicate | ”avenge,” “judge and avenge” | Not personal vengeance but God’s own righteous, judicial vindication of the innocent | мстишь (mstish’, from мстить) / better rendered with judicial nuance as взыщешь or воздашь по справедливости. Risk: Medium. Plain “мстить” (to take revenge) risks framing this as personal vendetta rather than righteous judicial vindication; exposition should clarify this is God’s judicial vindication of martyrs, not endorsement of personal vengeance-seeking by believers (cf. Rom 12:19’s baseline-adjacent teaching against personal vengeance). |
Chapter 7 — The 144,000 and the Great Multitude
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| sealed σφραγίζω / ἐσφραγισμένοι to seal / sealed ones | ”sealed,” “those who were sealed” | God’s own protective ownership-mark placed on his servants — positive counterpart to the beast’s mark (ch. 13) | запечатлённые (zapechatlyonnyye). Risk: High. See ch. 6/ch. 13 note: preserve strict lexical separation from начертание (mark of the beast). |
| great multitude ὄχλος πολύς a great/large crowd | ”a great multitude” | The full number of the redeemed “from every nation, tribe, people, and language” — universal scope of salvation (doctrine: Universal Scope of the Gospel, per Romans baseline) | великое множество (velikoye mnozhestvo). Risk: Medium. As with the Romans baseline’s universal-scope caution, must not be read as limited to, or as validating, any single national-ethnic-religious identity (again relevant to the “Third Rome”/Holy Rus’ sensitivity already flagged there). |
| white robes στολαὶ λευκαί white robes | ”white robes” | Purity and vindicated righteous standing granted to the redeemed, not self-achieved | белые одежды (belyye odezhdy). Risk: Low. |
| great tribulation θλῖψις μεγάλη great tribulation/affliction | ”the great tribulation” | Intensified persecution/suffering preceding final vindication | великая скорбь (velikaya skorb’). Risk: Medium. See ch. 2-3 note on скорбь; here intensified — must not be read as a purely future political-crisis label divorced from the pastoral call to endurance. |
Chapter 8 — The Seven Trumpets Begin
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| trumpet σάλπιγξ, salpinx trumpet | ”trumpet” | Divine announcement/warning-judgment, echoing OT covenant-trumpet and battle-signal usage | труба (truba). Risk: Low. |
| incense / prayers of the saints θυμιάματα … προσευχαὶ τῶν ἁγίων incense … prayers of the saints | ”incense,” “the prayers of the saints” | Believers’ prayers presented before God’s throne as part of his sovereign unfolding of judgment (doctrine: Sovereignty of God over History; Prayer, per Romans baseline) | фимиам … молитвы святых (fimiam … molitvy svyatykh). Risk: Medium. святые reuses the Romans baseline High-risk “saints” term — again must be read as all believers’ prayers, not the intercessory prayers to a canonized saintly elite (a distinction directly relevant here, since Orthodox devotional practice does in fact pray to the saints for their intercession — the text instead depicts the prayers of ordinary believers being carried to God). |
| wormwood ἄψινθος, apsinthos wormwood (a bitter plant) | “wormwood” | Bitter judgment poisoning the water supply — a plague-symbol, not a literal botanical claim | полынь (polyn’). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 9 — Fifth and Sixth Trumpets
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| abyss ἄβυσσος, abyssos the bottomless pit, abyss | ”the abyss,” “the bottomless pit” | The confined realm/prison of demonic forces, under God’s sovereign control even in its release (doctrine: Sovereignty of God over History) | бездна (bezdna). Risk: Medium. Standard, transparent Russian word for “abyss/chasm” — main risk is under-recognition of it as a specific apocalyptic-technical term (a confinement place for evil spirits) rather than a generic poetic metaphor for “depths.” |
| Abaddon/Apollyon Ἀβαδδών / Ἀπολλύων Hebrew “Destruction” / Greek “Destroyer" | "Abaddon,” “Apollyon” | The personified destroyer-angel/demon ruling the abyss’s locusts | Аваддон … Аполлион (Avaddon … Apollion). Risk: Low. Synodal preserves both the Hebrew and Greek forms exactly as the text itself does (“по-еврейски… по-гречески”); retain both. |
| torment βασανισμός, basanismos torment, torture | ”torment” | Limited, God-permitted judgment-torment (not the final lake of fire) | мучение (mucheniye). Risk: Medium. Shares a root with мученик (“martyr,” a heavily loaded Orthodox hagiographic category — see ch. 17/20 note below on μάρτυς); minimal risk here since the referent (torment inflicted on the wicked) is clearly distinct, but translators should be alert to root-level resonance across the book. |
Chapter 10 — The Angel and the Little Scroll
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| mystery of God μυστήριον τοῦ θεοῦ mystery of God | ”the mystery of God” | God’s hidden redemptive-historical plan, now being brought to completion (echoes Pauline μυστήριον usage) | тайна Божия (tayna Bozhiya). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from ordinary secular “тайна” (secret/mystery in a generic sense, e.g. detective-novel “mystery”); this is a specific, revealed-in-due-time redemptive plan, not an unsolved puzzle nor an Orthodox liturgical “Тайны” (a term also used for the sacraments/“Mysteries,” Св. Тайны = Holy Communion) — note this secondary collision explicitly, since “тайна” in Orthodox usage can specifically denote the sacraments. |
| little scroll βιβλαρίδιον little scroll/book | ”little scroll” | The prophetic word that is both sweet (privilege of revelation) and bitter (cost of proclaiming it) | книжка (knizhka, diminutive). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 11 — The Two Witnesses and the Seventh Trumpet
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| witnesses μάρτυρες, martyres witnesses | ”witnesses” | Two prophetic figures who testify faithfully unto death, embodying the whole church’s calling to faithful witness under persecution (doctrine: Perseverance and Faithful Witness) | свидетели (svideteli). Risk: Critical. This is the single most Russia-specific lexical collision in the entire book: “Свидетели Иеговы” (Jehovah’s Witnesses) is the official Russian name of an organization the Russian Federation’s Supreme Court declared “extremist” and formally banned in 2017 (its literature and assemblies remain criminally actionable). Any curriculum teaching about biblical “свидетели” and faithful “свидетельство” under persecution must, from its very first use of the term, distinguish the New Testament category (all believers called to testify to Christ, sometimes at the cost of their lives) from this specific, legally sensitive, named contemporary organization — both to avoid doctrinal confusion and to avoid inadvertently exposing users or the curriculum itself to unwanted legal or social scrutiny. This must be flagged for human theologian AND legal/cultural review at every occurrence throughout the book (2:13; 6:9; 11:3,7; 12:11,17; 17:6; 19:10; 20:4). |
| beast θηρίον, thērion wild beast, wild animal | ”beast” | First occurrence (11:7) of Revelation’s central antagonist-symbol for organized, persecuting anti-God political/religious power (fully developed in ch. 13, 17) | зверь (zver’). Risk: High. See full note at ch. 13 below. |
| temple of God ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ temple/sanctuary of God | ”the temple of God” | The heavenly sanctuary and/or symbol of God’s protected true worshippers | храм Божий (khram Bozhiy). Risk: Medium. храм also reuses the baseline’s church-building-association risk (Romans “церковь” note) — clarify this is not a physical parish building but the heavenly sanctuary/symbol of God’s presence and protected people. |
| kingdom of our Lord βασιλεία τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν kingdom of our Lord | ”the kingdom of our Lord [and of his Christ]“ | The final, decisive establishment of God’s/Christ’s sovereign reign over history at the seventh trumpet — a climactic doctrinal statement (Sovereignty of God over History; Return and Reign of Christ) | Царство Господа нашего (Tsarstvo Gospoda nashego), reusing baseline Царство Божие register. Risk: Medium. Per the Romans baseline’s kingdom_of_god note, must be kept clearly distinguished from any this-worldly political order, nostalgia for Russian imperial “tsardom,” or contemporary nationalist “Third Rome” framing — especially resonant here given царство’s history-laden political register in Russian. |
Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| dragon δράκων, drakōn dragon, serpent-monster | ”dragon” | Symbolic identification of Satan as the great cosmic adversary (explicitly identified in 12:9) | дракон (drakon). Risk: Medium. Established transliteration/loanword; Russian folklore does have its own rich dragon/serpent imagery (Змей Горыныч and similar figures), but since the text itself explicitly identifies the referent (v.9), ambiguity risk is low — main task is not defense against a rival concept but keeping the folkloric-fantastical register from trivializing the very real spiritual adversary depicted. |
| ancient serpent ὁ ὄφις ὁ ἀρχαῖος the ancient/original serpent | ”the ancient serpent” | Direct identification with the Genesis 3 serpent, tying Revelation’s climax back to the Fall | древний змий (drevniy zmiy). Risk: Low. Strong Genesis-Revelation canonical-bracket asset; змий (archaic Synodal form) already ties directly to Genesis 3’s serpent. |
| devil διάβολος, diabolos slanderer, accuser | ”devil,” “the Devil” | Satan’s role as accuser/slanderer, defeated by the blood of the Lamb and the word of testimony | диавол (diavol, Synodal spelling). Risk: Low. |
| Satan Σατανᾶς, Satanas adversary | ”Satan” | Proper-name title for the great cosmic adversary | сатана (satana). Risk: Low. |
| accuser κατήγορος, katēgoros accuser (legal term) | “accuser” | Satan’s legal-accusatory role before God, now overthrown | обвинитель (obvinitel’). Risk: Low. |
| they conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony ἐνίκησαν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀρνίου καὶ διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν they overcame him through the Lamb’s blood and the word of their testimony | ”they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” | The theological core of the whole book’s doctrine of Perseverance and Faithful Witness: victory is Christ’s atoning work appropriated through costly, persevering testimony, not human heroic strength | они победили его Кровию Агнца и словом свидетельства своего (oni pobedili yego Kroviyu Agntsa i slovom svidetel’stva svoyego). Risk: Critical. Combines three Critical/High terms at once (побеждающий, Агнец, свидетельство) in a single climactic doctrinal statement; requires human theologian review as the interpretive key for how “witness/testimony” (свидетельство, see ch. 11 note above on the Jehovah’s Witnesses collision) functions throughout the book — testimony to Christ, empowered by his atoning blood, not autonomous human courage nor any particular religious organization’s institutional identity. |
| diadem διάδημα, diadēma royal diadem/crown | ”diadem,” “crown” (royal, ruling) | The dragon’s usurped, false claim to royal authority — contrasted with Christ’s true “many diadems” (19:12) and the elders’/overcomers’ victor’s-wreath στέφανος | диадима (diadima). Risk: Medium. Must be kept lexically distinct from венец (στέφανος, victor’s wreath/crown, worn by the 24 elders and promised to overcomers) — Revelation deliberately uses two different Greek crown-words to contrast the dragon’s/beast’s usurped royal diadems (also later, ironically, Christ’s own true diadems at 19:12) against the martyrs’/overcomers’ victory wreaths; conflating the two into a single Russian word for “crown” erases this deliberate contrast. |
Chapter 13 — The Two Beasts and the Number 666
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| beast θηρίον, thērion wild beast | ”beast” | The full development of Revelation’s symbol for oppressive, blasphemous, persecuting political-religious power in opposition to God (doctrine: Sovereignty of God over History; Judgment of the Wicked) | зверь (zver’). Risk: High. зверь is ordinary Russian for “wild animal/beast,” and has also acquired a common colloquial positive slang use (e.g. “он зверь!” = “he’s a beast/amazing,” used admiringly of strength or skill) — this register risk could unintentionally soften or even invert the term’s deeply sinister apocalyptic force if surrounding exposition does not consistently reinforce the negative, anti-God connotation established by the text itself. |
| image of the beast εἰκὼν τοῦ θηρίου image/statue of the beast | ”the image of the beast” | An idolatrous object of worship demanding total allegiance, contrasted with the true worship due to God/the Lamb (doctrine: Worship of the Lamb) | образ зверя (obraz zverya). Risk: High. “Образ” is not merely a generic word for “image” in Russian religious usage — it is the classical/liturgical term for a sacred icon (e.g. “Образ Спасителя,” “Спас в силах” is described using “образ”), theologically central to Orthodox veneration practice (icons are venerated because they are “образ,” made in “образ и подобие” of God). Using “образ” for this idolatrous counterfeit-worship object creates an unintended lexical proximity to Orthodox icon-theology vocabulary; exposition must explicitly state that this “образ” is a demonic counterfeit demanding false worship, wholly unlike the Orthodox theological category of the sacred icon, to prevent any (even unconscious) polemical or confusing crossover reading. |
| mark χάραγμα, charagma mark, brand, engraved/stamped sign | ”mark” | The beast’s counterfeit ownership-mark, demanded for participation in its economic/social system — direct negative counterpart to God’s own protective seal (ch. 7) | начертание (nachertaniye, Synodal archaic term). Risk: High. Must never be confused with, or rendered using vocabulary overlapping, печать (God’s seal, ch. 7) — the two form the book’s central positive/negative contrast (whose mark do you bear?) and any lexical bleed between them destroys the theological point. |
| number of the beast, 666 ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ the number of the beast, six hundred sixty-six | ”the number of the beast,” “666” | A specific symbolic/numerological identification (likely gematria-based) of a particular historical embodiment of the beast, not a free-floating omen-number | число зверя, шестьсот шестьдесят шесть (chislo zverya, shestsot shest’desyat shest’). Risk: Medium. “666” is an extremely productive secular pop-culture cliché in Russian media as in most of the world (horror-film numerology, superstition); exposition must resist both over-literal numerological speculation about contemporary figures and pop-cultural trivialization, returning to the text’s own symbolic-interpretive method established at 1:1 (doctrine: Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation). |
Chapter 14 — The Lamb’s 144,000, the Eternal Gospel, the Harvest
No entirely new doctrine categories; reuses Агнец, 144,000, and introduces:
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| eternal gospel εὐαγγέλιον αἰώνιον eternal/everlasting gospel | ”eternal gospel,” “the everlasting gospel” | The one true gospel proclaimed with final, universal urgency — not a second or different gospel | вечное Евангелие (vechnoye Yevangeliye), reusing baseline Евангелие. Risk: Medium. Exposition should clarify this is the same single gospel of Romans, described here as “eternal” for its unchanging finality, not a distinct or supplementary revelation — guards against any reading admitting a rival “new” gospel content. |
| Babylon the great Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη Babylon the great | ”Babylon the Great” | First occurrence of Revelation’s central symbol for the world’s anti-God civilizational/economic/religious system in opposition to God’s kingdom | Вавилон великий (Vavilon velikiy). Risk: High. See fuller note at ch. 17-18 below. |
| winepress of God’s wrath ληνὸς τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ winepress of God’s wrath | ”the winepress of the wrath of God” | Vivid judgment imagery for God’s righteous judicial anger against persistent evil | точило гнева Божия (tochilo gneva Bozhiya). Risk: Medium. гнев (wrath) — see fuller note under ch. 15-16 below. |
Chapter 15 — Preparation for the Seven Bowls
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| song of Moses and of the Lamb ᾨδὴ τοῦ Μωϋσέως καὶ ᾨδὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου song of Moses and song of the Lamb | ”the song of Moses…and the song of the Lamb” | Deliberate OT-NT canonical bracket: the Exodus deliverance-song and the Lamb’s redemption-song sung as one unified act of worship | песнь Моисея… и песнь Агнца (pesn’ Moiseya… i pesn’ Agntsa). Risk: Low. Strong canonical-continuity asset. |
| bowls φιάλαι, phialai bowls, shallow cups | ”bowls” | Vessels of God’s final judgment-wrath, poured out on the beast’s world-system | чаши (chashi). Risk: Medium. чаша is also the standard Russian word for the Eucharistic chalice used in Orthodox (and many Protestant) communion services — a potential unintended resonance between “the chalice of blessing” and “the bowls/chalices of God’s wrath”; exposition should make the contrast between these two very different “cups” explicit rather than leaving readers to notice (or not notice) the lexical overlap unassisted. |
Chapter 16 — The Seven Bowls of Wrath
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| wrath θυμός/ὀργή, thymos/orgē passionate anger / settled, righteous anger | ”wrath,” “fury,” “anger” | God’s righteous, judicial response to persistent, unrepentant evil — not capricious rage (doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked) | гнев (gnev). Risk: Medium. Russian гнев covers both Greek terms without distinction (a minor nuance-loss, Low-Medium in itself), but the larger pastoral risk is presenting God’s wrath as arbitrary or emotionally unstable rather than as righteous judicial response, particularly important given the doctrine of God’s sovereignty and justice being taught alongside his love. |
| Armageddon Ἁρμαγεδών, Harmagedōn Hebrew place-name, likely “Mount Megiddo" | "Armageddon” | The symbolic gathering-place/name for the final decisive confrontation between God and the forces of evil | Армагеддон (Armageddon). Risk: Medium. Like “апокалипсис,” this transliterated proper name has become a fully secularized pop-culture cliché in Russian (disaster-film titles, casual hyperbole for “total catastrophe”) — exposition should recover its specific, sovereign-God-governed theological meaning against the flattened secular-doomsday connotation. |
Chapter 17 — The Great Harlot and the Beast
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| harlot πόρνη, pornē prostitute, harlot | ”the great harlot,” “the prostitute” | Symbolic personification of the corrupt, idolatrous, seductive world-system in political-economic alliance with the beast | блудница (bludnitsa). Risk: Medium. Established Synodal term; primary risk is readers moralizing the symbol into a purely sexual-ethics lesson rather than seeing its systemic, political-economic idolatry referent (alliance between commerce, empire, and false religion). |
| Babylon Βαβυλών, Babylōn Babylon (proper name, symbolic) | “Babylon,” “Babylon the Great” | The symbolic name for the world’s anti-God civilizational system, historically evoking the literal empire that destroyed Jerusalem’s temple and exiled God’s people | Вавилон (Vavilon). Risk: High. In Russian Orthodox nationalist and some geopolitical rhetoric, “decadent Babylon” imagery is occasionally applied polemically to “the West” (Europe/USA) as morally corrupt — precisely the same political-rhetorical move the Romans baseline already flags under “Third Rome”/kingdom_mission sensitivity. This curriculum must present Babylon strictly as the text’s own symbol for any and every anti-God, self-glorifying human power system across history, explicitly refusing identification with any single contemporary nation, bloc, or political actor, to avoid the material being read as (or being used as) contemporary political polemic. |
| mystery μυστήριον, mystērion mystery, hidden meaning requiring revealed interpretation | ”mystery” | Signals the symbolic name/figure requires angelic interpretation, reinforcing the book’s own symbolic-interpretive method | тайна (tayna). Risk: Medium. See ch. 10 note on тайна’s Orthodox sacramental-usage overlap (“Святые Тайны” = the Sacraments); here the referent is purely revelatory/interpretive, not sacramental, and should be kept distinct in exposition. |
Chapter 18 — The Fall of Babylon
Reuses Вавилон and блудница from ch. 17; new load-bearing term:
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| lament θρῆνος, thrēnos dirge, funeral lament | ”lament,” “dirge” | The kings/merchants’ self-interested mourning over Babylon’s fall, contrasted with heaven’s rejoicing (ch. 19:1-5) — a study in true vs. false grief/values | плач (plach). Risk: Low. Shares root with плач at 21:4 (mourning abolished); a deliberate ironic literary contrast worth noting in exposition (worldly lament over lost commerce vs. the final abolition of all godly grief). |
| merchandise/trade ἐμπόριον/ἐμπορία trade, merchandise, commerce | ”merchandise,” “cargo,” “trade” | The world’s economic system entangled with and complicit in Babylon’s idolatrous corruption | товар/торговля (tovar/torgovlya). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 19 — The Marriage of the Lamb and the Rider on the White Horse
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hallelujah Ἁλληλουϊά ”Praise the LORD” (Hebrew) | “Hallelujah” | Climactic heavenly worship-shout celebrating Babylon’s fall and God’s reign (doctrine: Worship; Assurance of Final Victory) | Аллилуия (Alliluiya). Risk: Low. Deeply embedded liturgical loanword in both Orthodox and Protestant Russian worship — a strong asset. |
| marriage of the Lamb γάμος τοῦ ἀρνίου wedding/marriage of the Lamb | ”the marriage of the Lamb” | The consummation of Christ’s covenant union with his redeemed people, the Church (doctrine: Church as Bride of Christ) | брак Агнца (brak Agntsa). Risk: High. See the невеста (bride) note at 21:2 above regarding the Orthodox monastic-nun collision; here additionally note that “брак” (marriage/wedding) itself is a term with strong sacramental status in Orthodox theology (Таинство Брака, the Sacrament of Marriage) — exposition should clarify this is not a literal future wedding ceremony to be modeled on human sacramental marriage rites, but the symbolic consummation of Christ’s covenant union with the whole redeemed church. |
| righteous deeds of the saints δικαιώματα τῶν ἁγίων righteous acts/requirements of the saints | ”the righteous deeds of the saints” | The fine linen of the bride is explicitly identified as given, granted righteousness — not self-achieved merit (directly reinforces the Romans baseline’s Critical “imputed righteousness” doctrine) | праведность святых (pravednost’ svyatykh), more precisely “праведные дела святых.” Risk: Critical. This verse is a crucial point of contact with the Romans baseline’s Critical grace/imputed-righteousness doctrine: exposition must clarify that this bridal “righteousness” is granted/credited (cf. вменённая праведность) rather than autonomously earned through ascetic achievement, preventing the whole verse from being absorbed into a synergistic merit-framework foreign to Romans’ forensic argument. |
| Faithful and True ὁ πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινός the Faithful and True One | ”Faithful and True” | A title for Christ himself (echoing 21:5’s description of God’s words) | Верный и Истинный (Verny i Istinnyy). Risk: Medium. See full note at 21:5 above; consistency required between the two occurrences. |
| Word of God ὁ Λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ the Word of God | ”the Word of God” | A Christological title identifying the rider with the eternal Word (cf. John 1:1), reinforcing shared, settled Nicene Christology (low risk per Romans baseline’s Christology notes) | Слово Божие (Slovo Bozhiye). Risk: Low-Medium. Shared, settled ground with Orthodox Trinitarian theology, per the Romans baseline’s general note on Christological terms. |
| King of kings and Lord of lords βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίων king of kings and lord of lords | ”King of kings and Lord of lords” | The absolute, supreme, universal sovereignty of Christ over every earthly and cosmic power (doctrine: Return and Reign of Christ; Sovereignty of God) | Царь царей и Господь господствующих (Tsar’ tsarey i Gospod’ gospodstvuyushchikh). Risk: Medium. Established, majestic Synodal phrase — an asset; reuses baseline Господь (Lord, High risk per baseline) — exposition should restore the personal, decisive force noted in the baseline’s lordship_of_christ doctrine, not let it flatten into ceremonial liturgical titulature alone. |
Chapter 20 — The Thousand Years, the Final Rebellion, and the Great White Throne
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| thousand years χίλια ἔτη, chilia etē a thousand years | ”a thousand years,” “the millennium” | The precise nature (literal future earthly reign vs. symbolic present-age reign) is a genuinely disputed point among faithful interpreters | тысяча лет (tysyacha let) / as noun тысячелетие (tysyacheletiye), “тысячелетнее царство” (millennial kingdom). Risk: Critical. This is a direct structural parallel to the Romans baseline’s East-West justification/theosis divergence: mainstream historic Orthodox eschatology (following Augustine’s amillennial, recapitulation-style reading, shared broadly across Eastern and Western patristic/conciliar tradition) reads Revelation 20 symbolically as describing the present church age, and has historically treated literal chiliasm (a future literal 1000-year earthly reign) with suspicion as an ancient heterodox tendency. A curriculum written from a Western (often implicitly premillennial/dispensational) framework must state its own interpretive position explicitly rather than assuming a literal future-millennium reading is neutral, shared common ground — this requires the same “state the position explicitly, do not let the term default silently” handling the baseline mandates for grace and salvation. |
| first resurrection ἡ ἀνάστασις ἡ πρώτη the first resurrection | ”the first resurrection” | Closely tied to the millennium interpretive question above; variously read as the martyrs’ souls’ heavenly vindication or as a future bodily resurrection preceding the general resurrection | первое воскресение (pervoye voskreseniye). Risk: High. Reuses baseline воскресение (resurrection, Medium risk generally) but here specifically entangled with the Critical millennium interpretive question above; requires the same explicit, non-silent theological framing. |
| book of life βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς book/scroll of life | ”book of life” | The record of those who belong to God, determining final destiny at the judgment (doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints) | книга жизни (kniga zhizni). Risk: Medium. Reinforces the Romans baseline’s assurance_of_salvation doctrine note; should be presented pastorally as assurance for believers, not fear-inducing uncertainty. |
| great white throne ὁ θρόνος ὁ μέγας ὁ λευκός the great white throne | ”the great white throne” | The final, universal judgment-seat of God, from which no one escapes accountability (doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked) | престол великий белый (prestol velikiy belyy). Risk: Low. |
| Gog and Magog Γὼγ καὶ Μαγώγ proper names (from Ezekiel 38-39) | “Gog and Magog” | Symbolic names for the final, doomed rebellion of the nations against God, echoing but reapplying Ezekiel’s prophecy | Гог и Магог (Gog i Magog). Risk: Low. Established proper-name forms. |
Chapter 21 (verses 9-27) — The New Jerusalem Described (beyond the core passage vv.1-8)
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| foundations θεμέλιοι, themelioi foundations | ”foundations” | The apostolic foundation of the church, inscribed with the twelve apostles’ names (echoes Eph 2:20) | основания (osnovaniya). Risk: Low. |
| twelve apostles of the Lamb οἱ δώδεκα ἀπόστολοι τοῦ ἀρνίου the twelve apostles of the Lamb | ”the twelve apostles of the Lamb” | Reuses baseline апостол (Medium risk per Romans baseline); here explicitly extended to the Lamb’s authority, tying the foundational apostolic office directly to Christ | двенадцать апостолов Агнца (dvenadtsat’ apostolov Agntsa). Risk: Medium. See Romans baseline’s apostleship doctrine note on the “closed, unrepeatable historical office” association; here that closed-and-foundational sense is actually doctrinally correct and should be affirmed, not softened. |
| precious stone λίθος τίμιος precious stone | ”precious stone” | Symbolic imagery of the city’s surpassing glory and value (echoes OT temple/high-priestly stone imagery, Exod 28) | драгоценный камень (dragotsennyy kamen’). Risk: Low. |
| no temple ναὸν οὐκ εἶδον ἐν αὐτῇ I saw no temple in it | ”I did not see a temple in the city” | God’s own direct, unmediated presence replaces the need for any mediating temple structure — a climactic fulfillment statement | храма я не видел в нём (khrama ya ne videl v nyom). Risk: Medium. Important pairing with the ch. 11 note on ναός/храм: here the text explicitly removes the temple/храм category, which should be highlighted as a deliberate, climactic statement about direct divine presence replacing all mediating structures — not overlooked as incidental detail. |
Chapter 22 — The River of Life and the Epilogue
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Russian Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| river of the water of life ποταμὸς ὕδατος ζωῆς river of the water of life | ”the river of the water of life” | Final Edenic restoration and expansion (cf. Ezek 47, Gen 2) — the consummated new creation | река воды жизни (reka vody zhizni). Risk: Low. Strong canonical-bracket asset, continuing 21:6/21:1’s themes. |
| no more curse οὐκ ἔσται ἔτι κατάρα there will no longer be any curse | ”there will no longer be any curse” | The final undoing of Genesis 3’s curse — direct Genesis-Revelation bracket for the doctrine of the New Heaven and New Earth | не будет уже никакого проклятия (ne budet uzhe nikakogo proklyatiya). Risk: Low. |
| his servants will worship him δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ λατρεύσουσιν αὐτῷ his slaves/servants will serve/worship him | ”his servants will worship him” | λατρεύω denotes cultic, priestly worship-service — the redeemed as a worshipping priesthood in the consummated kingdom (doctrine: Worship of the Lamb) | рабы Его будут служить Ему (raby Yego budut sluzhit’ Yemu). Risk: Low-Medium. служить is somewhat generic (“serve”); exposition may wish to note the specifically cultic/priestly, worship-service register of λατρεύω, connecting to the whole book’s sustained worship-liturgy scenes (ch. 4-5, 7, 15, 19). |
| they will reign βασιλεύσουσιν they will reign/rule as kings | ”they will reign” | The redeemed sharing in Christ’s own reigning authority forever (doctrine: Return and Reign of Christ, extended to the saints) | будут царствовать (budut tsarstvovat’). Risk: Medium. See ch. 11/kingdom_of_god baseline note — must be read as participation in God’s own righteous, eternal reign, not a political-nationalist “kingdom” framing. |
| I am coming soon ἔρχομαι ταχύ I am coming quickly/soon | ”I am coming soon,” “I am coming quickly” | Christ’s own promised, imminent, personal return — the doctrinal anchor of “The Return and Reign of Christ” | гряду скоро (gryadu skoro, Synodal archaic form). Risk: Medium. Established Synodal phrasing; the archaic “гряду” (rather than the plain “иду,” I am coming/going) preserves appropriate solemn register and should not be modernized away, per the baseline’s general register guidance (formal register consistent with established Bible-translation tradition). |
| Come, Lord Jesus Ἀμήν, ἔρχου κύριε Ἰησοῦ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus | ”Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” | The church’s own answering prayer of longing for Christ’s return — echoes the Aramaic “Maranatha” tradition (1 Cor 16:22) | Аминь. Гряди, Господи Иисусе! (Amin’. Gryadi, Gospodi Iisuse!). Risk: Low-Medium. Exact, established Synodal wording; must be preserved verbatim per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rules, given its high devotional/liturgical reuse across lessons. |
| the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετὰ πάντων the grace of the Lord Jesus [be] with all | ”the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all” | The book’s closing benediction, reusing баseline благодать (grace, Critical risk) — must not lose the “apart from works, freely given” force in this final send-off blessing | благодать Господа Иисуса со всеми (blagodat’ Gospoda Iisusa so vsemi), reusing baseline term exactly. Risk: Critical (per baseline благодать entry). |
