Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 John (Koine Greek → Cantonese)

Curriculum: 2 John Core passage: 2 John 1:4–11 Destination language: Cantonese (Traditional script, Hong Kong Protestant church register) Baseline authority: Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json) — all terms already recorded there MUST be reused exactly, unchanged.

0. Book Overview

2 John is a single-chapter, 13-verse letter, traditionally attributed to the Apostle John writing as ὁ πρεσβύτερος (“the Elder”), addressed to ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ (“the elect lady”) and her τέκνα (“children”) — most likely a coded designation for a local house-church and its members, though a literal reading (a Christian woman and her family) is also held historically. The occasion is urgent and narrow in scope: itinerant teachers denying that Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί (“Jesus Christ coming in the flesh”) — an early proto-Gnostic/docetic denial of the Incarnation — are circulating and seeking material support and legitimacy through the hospitality customs of the house-churches. John commends the recipients for περιπατοῦντας ἐν ἀληθείᾳ (“walking in truth”), reiterates the command to love one another, warns that failure to abide in Christ’s teaching forfeits fellowship with God, and gives the concrete pastoral instruction: do not receive such teachers into the house or extend the formal greeting that would signal endorsement.

Because the book has only one chapter, this analysis treats the core passage (vv. 4–11) verse-by-verse, and then treats the remainder of the chapter — the salutation (vv. 1–3) and the closing (vv. 12–13) — as the “chapter-by-chapter” coverage required for full-book scope. No verse in 2 John is theologically inert; every verse outside the core passage still contributes load-bearing vocabulary (χάρις, εἰρήνη, ἔλεος, υἱός, ἐκλεκτή, πρεσβύτερος, χαρά) that must be fixed for consistency with Phase 2 translation.

Four curriculum doctrines anchor the term tagging below:

  • WTL = Walking in Truth and Love
  • WAD = Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
  • HDD = Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
  • PTC = Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ

1. Core Passage — Verse-by-Verse Analysis (2 John 1:4–11)

2 John 1:4

Greek: Ἐχάρην λίαν ὅτι εὕρηκα ἐκ τῶν τέκνων σου περιπατοῦντας ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, καθὼς ἐλάβομεν ἐντολὴν παρὰ τοῦ πατρός. “I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we received commandment from the Father.”

περιπατέω (περιπατοῦντας) — peripateō

  • Literal meaning: “to walk about, to walk around”
  • Semantic range: physical walking → metaphorical “conduct one’s life, live, behave”
  • English variants: “walking” (KJV/ESV), “living” (some paraphrases)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the whole manner of a believer’s ongoing daily conduct, here specifically conduct characterized by ἀλήθεια. Doctrine: WTL.
  • Cantonese rendering: 行 (haang4), used in the phrase 行在真理中 (haang4 zoi6 zan1 lei5 zung1)
  • Risk: High — 行 alone is a semantically thin, everyday verb; combined with 道 (the Way), Hong Kong readers steeped in Daoist and folk-religious idiom (行道, “walking the Way/path of virtue”) or in Confucian conduct-ethics (echoing the 義/義氣 collision already flagged in the Romans baseline for righteousness) may hear self-cultivated moral practice rather than Spirit-enabled fidelity to revealed truth. Must always appear in the fixed phrase 行在真理中/行在愛裡, never bare 行.

ἀλήθεια (ἀληθείᾳ) — alētheia

  • Literal meaning: “truth, that which is not concealed, reality”
  • Semantic range: correspondence-truth (factual accuracy) → the gospel message itself → a relational/moral quality (truthfulness, fidelity)
  • English variants: “truth” (all major versions)
  • Contextual theological meaning: in 2 John, ἀλήθεια is nearly a title for the apostolic gospel message and the community that holds it (cf. vv. 1–4); to “walk in truth” is to live out fidelity to the revealed teaching about Christ. Doctrine: WTL, and underlies WAD/PTC.
  • Cantonese rendering: 真理 (zan1 lei5)
  • Risk: High — 真理 is the standard, unavoidable Christian rendering, shared with Chinese philosophical and Buddhist usage of “ultimate truth/reality” (真如, 真理) and with generic secular usage (“scientific truth”). Teaching materials must anchor 真理 explicitly to the apostolic testimony about Jesus Christ (cf. v. 7), not an abstract or self-discovered ultimate reality.

ἐντολή (ἐντολήν) — entolē

  • Literal meaning: “a commandment, injunction, charge”
  • Semantic range: a specific directive → the whole body of God’s/Christ’s commands, esp. in Johannine literature “the commandment to love”
  • English variants: “commandment” (KJV/ESV), “command” (NIV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: not Mosaic Law civil/ceremonial commands, but the Father’s charge — climaxing in v. 5’s love command — received “from the beginning” of the apostolic proclamation. Doctrine: WTL, PTC.
  • Cantonese rendering: 命令 (ming6 ling6), following the established Chinese Union Version Johannine convention (distinct from 誡命, which is reserved for the Decalogue/Mosaic law contexts)
  • Risk: Medium — must not be read as bureaucratic/legalistic “orders” divorced from relationship; note distinguishing this command as flowing from and returning to love, not merit-earning rule-keeping.

πατήρ (πατρός) — patēr [BASELINE TM — reuse 父 (fu6) exactly]

  • Contextual theological meaning: God as personal Father, the source and giver of the commandment. Doctrine: WTL; connects to baseline’s Adoption doctrine.
  • Risk: High (as recorded in baseline; no change).

2 John 1:5

Greek: Καὶ νῦν ἐρωτῶ σε, κυρία, οὐχ ὡς ἐντολὴν καινὴν γράφων σοι, ἀλλὰ ἣν εἴχομεν ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς, ἵνα ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους. “And now I ask you, lady, not as though writing a new commandment to you, but the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.”

κυρία — kyria

  • Literal meaning: “lady, mistress” (feminine of κύριος, “lord/master”)
  • Semantic range: a polite honorific address to a woman of standing → possibly a proper name (“Kyria”) → a symbolic address to a church
  • English variants: “lady” (KJV/ESV/NIV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: respectful address to the recipient (individual or corporate). Doctrine: HDD (addressee of the whole letter’s instructions).
  • Cantonese rendering: 夫人 (fu1 jan4)
  • Risk: Medium — CRITICAL COLLISION AVOIDANCE NOTE: κυρία shares its root with κύριος, the baseline’s Critical-risk term for Christ’s exclusive Lordship (主, zyu2). Translators must never render κυρία with any form built on 主, which would visually/aurally suggest a title of lordship. 夫人 is a purely social honorific and carries no such risk.

ἀγαπάω (ἀγαπῶμεν) — agapaō

  • Literal meaning: “to love, to have selfless regard/affection for”
  • Semantic range: self-giving, willed love (distinct from ἔρως romantic desire or φιλία friendship-affection) → in NT usage, the love that originates in God’s own character and is commanded of believers
  • English variants: “love” (all versions)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the reiterated apostolic command that believers love one another — the twin of walking in truth (v. 4) and the standard by which false teachers are exposed (they do not walk in this love). Doctrine: WTL — the central doctrine of the book alongside truth.
  • Cantonese rendering: 愛 (oi3), in the fixed phrase 彼此相愛 (bei2 ci5 soeng1 oi3, “love one another”)
  • Risk: High — 愛 is ubiquitous in Cantopop, romance media, and everyday speech (愛情, romantic love) and risks being heard as sentiment/feeling rather than a willed, others-directed, command-obeying love. There is also a softer echo of the same collision already flagged for 義/義氣 in the Romans baseline: Cantonese triad/brotherhood loyalty-culture prizes a fierce in-group loyalty-love (兄弟情) that is conditional on group membership, whereas ἀγάπη in 2 John is unconditional obedience to Christ’s command, not clan/gang loyalty.

ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς (“from the beginning”) — not a single term but a load-bearing phrase

  • Contextual theological meaning: grounds the love-command in the fixed apostolic tradition, not an innovation — directly setting up v. 9’s warning against those who “go beyond” (προάγων) that received teaching. Doctrine: PTC.
  • Cantonese rendering: 從起初 (cung4 hei2 co1)
  • Risk: Low — standard phrase, low ambiguity.

2 John 1:6

Greek: καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἀγάπη, ἵνα περιπατῶμεν κατὰ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ. αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἐντολή, καθὼς ἠκούσατε ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς, ἵνα ἐν αὐτῇ περιπατῆτε. “And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, just as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.”

This verse recycles ἀγάπη, περιπατέω, and ἐντολή (see vv. 4–5 above; no semantic shift, but note the deliberate circularity: love IS obedient walking, and the commandment IS to walk in love — Johannine style binds the two doctrines (WTL) into a single reality, which must be preserved in Cantonese syntax rather than flattened into two separate, sequential ideas).

  • Cantonese rendering consistency check: 呢個就係愛:我們要遵行佢嘅命令。呢個就係命令:正如你哋從起初所聽嘅,你哋要行在愛裡面.
  • Risk: High (inherits both terms’ risk; the circular literary structure itself is a translation risk — a flattened or reordered Cantonese rendering could obscure that love and obedience are mutually defining, not sequential).

2 John 1:7

Greek: ὅτι πολλοὶ πλάνοι ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸν κόσμον, οἱ μὴ ὁμολογοῦντες Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ πλάνος καὶ ὁ ἀντίχριστος. “For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those not confessing Jesus Christ coming in the flesh; this is the deceiver and the antichrist.”

πλάνος — planos

  • Literal meaning: “wandering, roving”; substantive: “a wanderer, impostor, deceiver”
  • Semantic range: literal vagrancy → a deliberate misleader of others, one who leads astray
  • English variants: “deceiver” (ESV/NIV), “deceiver”/“seducer” (KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: itinerant false teachers actively propagating denial of the Incarnation, not merely mistaken believers. Doctrine: WAD.
  • Cantonese rendering: 迷惑人嘅 (mai4 waak6 jan4 ge3), following the baseline’s established nominalized-adjective pattern (cf. 蒙召嘅, 蒙揀選嘅)
  • Risk: High — Hong Kong’s very active vocabulary for financial/phone scam artists (騙徒, 科款) risks the term being heard as ordinary fraud-warning rather than a warning about doctrinal corruption of the message of Christ. A clarifying note that this is specifically about false teaching concerning Christ’s person, not financial deception, is required in teaching material.

ὁμολογέω (ὁμολογοῦντες) — homologeō

  • Literal meaning: “to say the same thing, to agree, to acknowledge/confess”
  • Semantic range: legal/formal admission → public, formal confession of belief
  • English variants: “confessing” (ESV/NIV/KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the positive counterpart to Romans 10:9’s “Jesus is Lord” confession pattern (baseline doctrine: Lordship of Christ) — here the confession is specifically that Jesus Christ has come ἐν σαρκί. Doctrine: WAD, tightly linked to baseline’s Incarnation and Deity/Sonship of Christ doctrines.
  • Cantonese rendering: 承認 (sing4 jing6)
  • Risk: Critical — must retain the sense of a formal, public doctrinal confession (not private opinion); denial of this confession is the defining mark of ὁ πλάνος καὶ ὁ ἀντίχριστος. Any softening (e.g., rendering as mere “believe” 信) would blur the forensic, public-declaration character shared with the baseline’s 耶穌是主 confession pattern.

Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί (“Jesus Christ coming in the flesh”) — the Incarnation confession

  • σάρξ (σαρκί) — sarx: literal “flesh,” semantic range physical body/human nature (vs. spirit) → sinful human nature (Pauline usage) — here the neutral/positive sense: full, genuine human physicality.
  • Contextual theological meaning: this is 2 John’s direct restatement of the doctrine the baseline names Incarnation (道成肉身, John 1:14 echo) — the eternal Son’s real, permanent assumption of human nature, denied by proto-Gnostic/docetic teachers who held Christ only “seemed” to have a body.
  • Cantonese rendering: retain baseline’s 道成肉身 (dou6 sing4 juk6 san1) [BASELINE TM — reuse exactly] as the doctrine name; render the verse’s own wording as 耶穌基督成為肉身臨到 (je4 sou1 gei1 duk1 sing4 wai4 juk6 san1 lam4 dou3) to preserve ἐρχόμενον’s “coming” sense alongside the incarnation reality.
  • Risk: Critical — NEVER use 化身 (a deity’s repeatable manifestation, popularly attributed to Guanyin) or 顯靈 (a deity “manifesting power” at a shrine) for ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί, per baseline’s forbidden-substitution list. This is the single highest-stakes rendering decision in the whole book.

ἀντίχριστος — antichristos

  • Literal meaning: “against Christ” (ἀντί + Χριστός); “antichrist,” “opposed-to-Christ one”
  • Semantic range: a specific eschatological adversary figure (cf. 1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3) → in 2 John, any teacher embodying this denial in the present
  • English variants: “antichrist” (all versions, established loanword/calque across Chinese Bible translations)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the theological climax of v. 7 — denial of the Incarnation is not a minor doctrinal variant but is definitionally antichrist. Doctrine: WAD (Critical anchor term).
  • Cantonese rendering: 敵基督 (dik6 gei1 duk1) — established across Chinese Bible traditions
  • Risk: Critical — must not be softened into a generic “evil spirit” or conflated with Chinese folk-Buddhist demon-king figures (e.g., 魔王); 敵基督 names a specific, historically-active christological error, not a mythic cosmic villain independent of doctrine.

κόσμος — kosmos (“world”)

  • Contextual theological meaning: the sphere of human society outside/opposed to the believing community, into which the deceivers have gone out. Doctrine: WAD (background term).
  • Cantonese rendering: 世界 (sai3 gaai3)
  • Risk: Low — standard term, no significant collision.

2 John 1:8

Greek: βλέπετε ἑαυτούς, ἵνα μὴ ἀπολέσητε ἃ εἰργασάμεθα, ἀλλὰ μισθὸν πλήρη ἀπολάβητε. “Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward.”

βλέπετε ἑαυτούς (“watch yourselves”) — blepete heautous

  • Literal meaning: “see/look at yourselves”; idiomatic imperative: “be on guard, take heed to yourselves”
  • Contextual theological meaning: a call to vigilant self-examination against the deceivers just described, not passive optimism about one’s own stability. Doctrine: HDD, WAD.
  • Cantonese rendering: 提防自己 (tai4 fong4 zi6 gei2)
  • Risk: Medium — must not be flattened into generic self-care advice; the object of vigilance is specifically doctrinal fidelity under external threat from false teachers.

μισθός (μισθὸν πλήρη) — misthos (“reward, wages”)

  • Literal meaning: “wages, pay, reward” (from ordinary labor-payment vocabulary)
  • Semantic range: commercial wages → eschatological reward for faithful ministry/labor
  • English variants: “reward” (all versions), “wages” (more literal renderings)
  • Contextual theological meaning: not personal salvation earned by merit, but the eschatological fruit of persevering, faithful gospel labor (ἃ εἰργασάμεθα, “what we have worked for” — the apostolic missionary labor invested in this community) which can be forfeited if the community capitulates to false teaching. Doctrine: PTC, HDD.
  • Cantonese rendering: 賞賜 (soeng2 ci3)
  • Risk: High — must be carefully distinguished from the transactional, merit-earning framework already flagged Critical in the baseline under Grace (功德, Buddhist earned merit; the Wong Tai Sin vow-and-offering exchange model). 賞賜 here names the Father’s gracious commendation of persevering faith and ministry, not a payment purchased by religious performance; a clarifying note is required wherever this term appears in teaching material.

2 John 1:9

Greek: πᾶς ὁ προάγων καὶ μὴ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει· ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ, οὗτος καὶ τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει. “Everyone who goes ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”

προάγω (προάγων) — proagō

  • Literal meaning: “to go before, to lead forward, to go ahead of”
  • Semantic range: neutral spatial “go ahead” → here, negatively, “to go beyond/overstep” the received apostolic teaching, i.e., doctrinal innovation that abandons rather than develops the deposit of faith
  • English variants: “goes on ahead” (ESV), “runs ahead” (NIV), “transgresseth” (KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the false teachers style their denial of the Incarnation as spiritual advancement/progress, but John frames it as departure, forfeiting relationship with God entirely. Doctrine: WAD, PTC (Critical hinge verse — this is the doctrinal core of “perseverance in the teaching of Christ”).
  • Cantonese rendering: 越過基督嘅教導 (jyut6 gwo3 gei1 duk1 ge3 gaau3 dou6, “goes beyond the teaching of Christ”)
  • Risk: High — CULTURAL CAUTION: 進步/越過-type language in modern Hong Kong discourse is almost uniformly positive (“progress,” “moving forward”); teaching material must make explicit that this “going ahead” is a negative departure from fixed apostolic truth, not commendable spiritual growth or open-minded development.

μένω (μένων) — menō (“abide, remain, continue”)

  • Literal meaning: “to stay, remain, dwell, continue”
  • Semantic range: physical remaining in a place → relational/spiritual continuing in a state of union or fidelity (strong Johannine theological usage, cf. John 15)
  • English variants: “abides” (ESV), “continues” (NIV), “abideth” (KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: persevering, ongoing fidelity to Christ’s teaching as the condition of possessing (ἔχει) both the Father and the Son — this is the doctrinal center of PTC.
  • Cantonese rendering: 常在 (soeng4 zoi6), in the fixed phrase 常在基督嘅教導裡面 (soeng4 zoi6 gei1 duk1 ge3 gaau3 dou6 leoi5 min6)
  • Risk: High — must not be rendered as mere passive “staying put”; also guard against collision with Buddhist philosophical use of 常 (permanence/eternality as a metaphysical category contrasted with impermanence/anicca) — here 常在 names relational, persevering fidelity to a specific body of teaching about Christ, not a metaphysical state.

διδαχή (τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ) — didachē (“teaching, doctrine”)

  • Literal meaning: “that which is taught; teaching, instruction, doctrine”
  • Semantic range: the act of teaching → the content taught (a body of doctrine)
  • English variants: “teaching” (ESV/NIV), “doctrine” (KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the fixed apostolic body of teaching about who Christ is (including the Incarnation confession of v. 7) and what he commands (the love-command of vv. 5–6) — the standard by which fellowship with God is measured. Doctrine: PTC (title doctrine term).
  • Cantonese rendering: 教導 (gaau3 dou6) — NOT 教訓
  • Risk: High — TRANSLATION CAUTION: colloquial Hong Kong Cantonese uses 教訓 chiefly to mean “to scold/reprimand” or “teach someone a lesson” (教訓佢一下), a punitive connotation entirely absent from διδαχή. 教導 must be used consistently instead to avoid readers hearing “the scolding of Christ” rather than “the teaching of Christ.”

θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει / τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει (“does not have God” / “has the Father and the Son”)

  • Contextual theological meaning: possessing right relationship with God the Father and God the Son is contingent on, not separate from, doctrinal fidelity — a direct rebuttal of any “all paths/all teachings lead to the same God” framing. Doctrine: WAD, deity/sonship of Christ (baseline Critical terms 神/父/神嘅兒子 — reuse exactly).
  • Risk: Critical — the logical structure (fidelity to teaching ⟺ possession of God) must not be softened into a mere consequence (“you’ll be spiritually poorer”) — it is an absolute statement of exclusion from relationship with God.

2 John 1:10

Greek: εἴ τις ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει, μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν, καὶ χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε· “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into the house, and do not say to him, ‘Greetings.’”

λαμβάνετε … εἰς οἰκίαν (“receive … into the house”) — hospitality-reception formula

  • Literal meaning: “to take/receive [someone] into a house”
  • Semantic range: literal domestic hospitality → in the ancient itinerant-teacher context, formal sponsorship/endorsement of a traveling teacher’s ministry (lodging, provision, introduction to the community)
  • Contextual theological meaning: withholding this reception is not personal rudeness but withholding institutional/doctrinal endorsement from a teacher who denies the Incarnation. Doctrine: HDD (title doctrine).
  • Cantonese rendering: 接待入屋 (jip3 doi6 jap6 uk1), core verb 接待 (jip3 doi6, “to receive/host”)
  • Risk: Medium — Hong Kong’s dense-housing, stranger-caution urban culture already discourages admitting unknown visitors into one’s home for unrelated practical reasons; teaching material must clarify this verse is about withholding formal ministry-endorsement of a known false teacher, not a general rule about domestic hospitality or politeness to strangers.

χαίρειν … λέγετε (“say to him, ‘Greetings’”) — chairein legein

  • Literal meaning: χαίρειν is the infinitive of χαίρω (“to rejoice”), used idiomatically as a fixed epistolary/oral greeting formula equivalent to “Hail!” or “Good day to you” — a technical salutation, not an invitation to literal rejoicing
  • Semantic range: formal greeting/blessing of welcome and goodwill extended especially to guests and correspondents
  • English variants: “greeting” (ESV/NIV), “God speed” (KJV, archaic idiom for a blessing of safe journey)
  • Contextual theological meaning: withholding this greeting formula = withholding public, social legitimization of the false teacher’s ministry within the community. Doctrine: HDD.
  • Cantonese rendering: 問安 (man6 on1)
  • Risk: Medium — RISK: in Hong Kong’s face-conscious social culture (面子), a directive to withhold a customary greeting risks being read as sanctioned rudeness or shaming; teaching material must clarify the scope is narrowly doctrinal (withholding endorsement of false teaching about Christ), not a license for general social coldness or discourtesy toward non-Christians or strangers generally.

2 John 1:11

Greek: ὁ γὰρ λέγων αὐτῷ χαίρειν κοινωνεῖ τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ τοῖς πονηροῖς. “For the one who says to him, ‘Greetings,’ shares in his evil works.”

κοινωνεῖ — koinōneō (“to share, participate, become a partner in”)

  • Literal meaning: “to have a share/part in something in common with another”
  • Semantic range: positive sense — shared participation in Christ and the church (the noun κοινωνία underlies the baseline’s Christian Fellowship doctrine, 團契) → here, a negative sense — becoming complicit/a partner in another’s wrongdoing
  • English variants: “shares in” (ESV/NIV), “is partaker of” (KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: extending the greeting formula to a teacher who denies the Incarnation is not neutral hospitality but active moral participation in that false teaching’s harm. Doctrine: HDD, WAD.
  • Cantonese rendering: 有份於 (jau5 fan6 jyu1), e.g. 就係有份於佢嘅惡行
  • Risk: High — MUST BE DISTINGUISHED FROM 團契 (baseline’s established rendering of κοινωνία, “fellowship,” Low risk): the same Greek root here names culpable complicity in evil, the theological opposite of blessed fellowship in Christ. Never render this verb with 團契 or any term that could be confused with positive Christian fellowship language. (Rejected alternative: 同流合污 — a vivid, idiomatically natural Chinese expression for “join in wrongdoing,” but rejected here as too colloquial/derogatory in register for the letter’s formal pastoral tone; retained only as a teaching-note gloss for meaning, not as the fixed rendering.)

ἔργα … τὰ πονηρά (“evil works”)

  • Contextual theological meaning: the concrete outworking of the false teacher’s doctrinal error. Doctrine: WAD.
  • Cantonese rendering: 邪惡嘅行為 (ce4 ok3 ge3 hang4 wai4)
  • Risk: Low — straightforward moral-evil vocabulary, no significant collision beyond generic caution against reducing “evil works” to social/legal wrongdoing rather than doctrinally-rooted sin.

2. Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage of the Whole Book

2 John consists of a single chapter (13 verses). The core passage above covers vv. 4–11. This section covers the remaining verses — the salutation (vv. 1–3) and the closing (vv. 12–13) — completing full-book coverage as mandated.

Chapter 1, vv. 1–3 (Salutation)

πρεσβύτερος — presbyteros (“elder, older man”)

  • Literal meaning: comparative of πρέσβυς, “elder”; substantive: “an elder” (in age or office)
  • Semantic range: literal old age → the recognized office of church elder/overseer → self-designation of apostolic authority (as likely here)
  • English variants: “the elder” (all major versions)
  • Contextual theological meaning: John’s self-designation, asserting pastoral authority to command the instructions that follow (vv. 5, 10). Not one of the four core doctrines directly, but load-bearing for the letter’s authority-structure.
  • Cantonese rendering: 長老 (zoeng2 lou5)
  • Risk: Medium — Pearl River Delta clan culture carries a strong parallel concept of the village/clan elder (族老) whose authority derives from lineage seniority; teaching material should clarify this is a recognized church-office/apostolic-authority designation, not a clan-elder social-seniority role.

ἐκλεκτή (ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ / τῆς ἀδελφῆς … τῆς ἐκλεκτῆς v13) — eklektē (“elect, chosen”)

  • Literal meaning: “picked out, chosen, select”
  • Semantic range: ordinary selection (“chosen item”) → theological election, God’s sovereign gracious choice (cf. baseline’s Election doctrine)
  • English variants: “elect” (ESV/KJV), “chosen” (NIV, sometimes left untranslated as a possible proper name “Electa”)
  • Contextual theological meaning: describes the addressee (and, in v. 13, her sister) as belonging to God’s chosen people — connects 2 John’s addressees to the same doctrine of sovereign, gracious election documented Critical/High in the Romans baseline.
  • Cantonese rendering: 蒙揀選嘅 (mung4 gaan2 syun2 ge3), following the established baseline morphological pattern for 蒙召嘅/揀選 (gaan2 syun2)
  • Risk: High — must retain the baseline’s distinction: this is God’s personal, gracious choice, NEVER rendered with fate/destiny language (命運, 八字注定) as the baseline explicitly forbids for “election.”

τέκνον (τέκνοις) — teknon (“child”)

  • Literal meaning: “child” (by birth or, metaphorically, spiritual descent)
  • Contextual theological meaning: either the lady’s literal children or, if κυρία is a symbolic church-designation, the members of that congregation as her spiritual “children.” Doctrine: background to HDD/WTL (the letter’s audience).
  • Cantonese rendering: 兒女 (ji4 neoi5)
  • Risk: Low — standard kinship term; minor ambiguity in whether literal or figurative should be flagged for translator note but not doctrinally loaded.

ἀγαπάω (ἀγαπῶ) — see core passage v. 5 entry above; same rendering 愛/彼此相愛 applies. No new risk.

γινώσκω (ἐγνωκότες) — ginōskō (“to know”)

  • Literal meaning: “to know, come to know, recognize”
  • Semantic range: factual/intellectual knowing → relational, experiential knowing (strong Johannine usage: knowing truth as knowing a Person/reality, not merely possessing information)
  • English variants: “known” (ESV/NIV/KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: “all who have known the truth” describes the whole believing community bound together by shared relational recognition of the gospel, not merely those who hold correct information. Doctrine: WTL.
  • Cantonese rendering: 認識 (jing6 sik1) — NOT the thinner 知道 (“know [a fact]”)
  • Risk: Medium — 知道 would flatten this into merely propositional knowledge; 認識 preserves the relational, experiential dimension proper to Johannine usage.

μένω (μένουσαν, v2) — menō, same root as core passage v.9 μένων; here of truth “abiding/remaining in us.” Reinforces PTC theme even in the salutation.

  • Cantonese rendering: 常在 (soeng4 zoi6), consistent with core passage entry.
  • Risk: High (inherits core-passage rating; establishes the abiding motif before the core passage’s climactic use in v. 9).

αἰών (εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα) — aiōn (“age, eternity, forever”)

  • Literal meaning: “an age, a long duration of time”; idiomatic εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα = “forever”
  • Semantic range: a specific era/age → unending eternity
  • English variants: “forever” (ESV/NIV), “for ever” (KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the permanence of truth’s abiding presence with believers, contrasted implicitly with the transience of the deceivers’ teaching (v. 7). Doctrine: background to WTL/PTC.
  • Cantonese rendering: 永遠 (wing5 jyun5)
  • Risk: Medium — standard rendering, but should be kept distinct in teaching notes from cyclical/rebirth notions of time found in popular Buddhist eschatology (already flagged under the baseline’s Resurrection entry regarding 投胎轉世); 永遠 here denotes unending linear continuance, not a cycle.

χάρις — charis [BASELINE TM — reuse 恩典 (jan1 din2) exactly, Critical]

  • Contextual theological meaning: unmerited favor from the Father and the Son, in the letter’s opening greeting-triad with mercy and peace. No new note beyond baseline; the baseline’s Wong Tai Sin/temple-vow forbidden-substitution warning applies unchanged.

ἔλεος — eleos (“mercy”)

  • Literal meaning: “mercy, compassion, pity” shown toward one in need or distress
  • Semantic range: general compassion → covenantal mercy shown by God to his people despite their unworthiness
  • English variants: “mercy” (all versions)
  • Contextual theological meaning: alongside grace and peace, part of the triadic apostolic greeting formula (also found in 1–2 Timothy). Doctrine: background to WTL/PTC.
  • Cantonese rendering: 憐憫 (lin4 man5) — NOT 慈悲
  • Risk: High — CRITICAL COLLISION AVOIDANCE: 慈悲 is the standard Chinese Buddhist term for compassion and is the root of Guanyin’s popular epithet 大慈大悲救苦救難 (“greatly compassionate, saving from suffering and hardship”), which the Romans baseline explicitly forbids quoting in connection with salvation-adjacent doctrine due to syncretism risk in Hong Kong’s Guanyin-devotion-saturated households. 憐憫 must be used instead for ἔλεος throughout the 2 John curriculum to avoid the same collision.

εἰρήνη — eirēnē [BASELINE TM — reuse 平安 (ping4 on1) exactly, Medium]

  • Contextual theological meaning: relational peace with God, part of the same greeting-triad; the baseline’s protective-charm/almanac forbidden-substitution warning applies unchanged.

θεὸς πατήρ / Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ πατρός — reuse baseline 神 (san4) [Critical], 父 (fu6) [High], 耶穌 (je4 sou1), 基督 (gei1 duk1) exactly.

  • New note for 2 John 1:3’s specific phrase τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός (“the Son of the Father,” rather than the baseline’s more usual “Son of God” υἱὸς θεοῦ): this is a variant formulation of the same Critical doctrine the baseline names Sonship of Christ (神嘅兒子). Cantonese rendering should read 父嘅兒子 (fu6 ge3 ji4 zi2) or fold into the established 神嘅兒子 phrasing for consistency; either way, the eternal, unique, co-equal sonship sense from the baseline note must be preserved, never softened toward an honorary or adoptive sonship.
  • Risk: Critical (inherits baseline rating for Sonship of Christ / Deity of Christ).

Chapter 1, vv. 12–13 (Closing)

  • Literal meaning: “joy, gladness” (noun form of the same root as χαίρω/χαίρειν seen in v. 10’s greeting formula, but here in its ordinary emotional sense, not the technical greeting idiom)
  • Semantic range: circumstantial happiness → deep, often God-given gladness, especially joy shared in Christian community
  • English variants: “joy” (all versions); “complete/full” (πεπληρωμένη) modifies it
  • Contextual theological meaning: the Elder’s hoped-for face-to-face fellowship, completing (not merely adding to) the community’s shared joy. Doctrine: background to HDD (relational, embodied fellowship valued over written correspondence alone).
  • Cantonese rendering: 喜樂 (hei2 lok6)
  • Risk: Low-Medium — should be distinguished from secular, circumstance-based happiness (開心) and from fortune/luck-based happiness already flagged under the baseline’s Grace entry (福氣); 喜樂 here is relational joy rooted in Christian fellowship, not luck or favorable circumstance.

στόμα πρὸς στόμα (“mouth to mouth”)

  • Literal meaning: idiomatic Greek for face-to-face, direct oral communication (cf. Hebrew idiom “mouth to mouth,” Numbers 12:8 LXX)
  • Contextual theological meaning: the Elder prefers embodied, direct fellowship over written correspondence — reinforces that doctrinal instruction and hospitality decisions are meant to be worked out in real relationship, not merely at a distance. Doctrine: background to HDD.
  • Cantonese rendering: 面對面 (min6 deoi3 min6)
  • Risk: Low — natural idiomatic equivalent exists in Cantonese; no significant doctrinal risk.

ἀσπάζομαι (ἀσπάζεται) — aspazomai (“to greet, salute”)

  • Literal meaning: “to greet, welcome, send greetings to”
  • Semantic range: standard epistolary closing convention (distinct from the technical χαίρειν hospitality-endorsement formula of v. 10 — this is an ordinary letter-closing greeting, carrying no doctrinal endorsement weight)
  • English variants: “greets” (ESV/NIV), “greet” (KJV)
  • Contextual theological meaning: a warm, ordinary closing greeting from the sister congregation’s members. Doctrine: none directly; low-risk structural/epistolary vocabulary.
  • Cantonese rendering: 問候 (man6 hau6)
  • Risk: Low — TRANSLATOR NOTE FOR CONSISTENCY: must be kept distinct in register from 問安 (used for the technical, doctrinally-loaded greeting-formula of v. 10–11); using the same Cantonese word for both would blur the doctrinal weight of withholding v. 10’s greeting.

ἀδελφή (τῆς ἀδελφῆς) — adelphē (“sister”)

  • Literal meaning: “sister” (by blood or, metaphorically, in the faith community)
  • Contextual theological meaning: parallels κυρία/τέκνα structure — likely another church designated as a “sister” community, echoing the corporate reading of the letter’s addressees. Doctrine: background to HDD/WTL.
  • Cantonese rendering: 姊妹 (zi2 mui6)
  • Risk: Low — standard kinship/fellowship term, well established in Hong Kong church usage for “sisters in Christ.”

3. Summary of Full-Book Coverage

Every verse of 2 John (1:1–13) has been analyzed above: the core passage (vv. 4–11) verse-by-verse, and the remaining framing verses (vv. 1–3, 12–13) by term. No verse contributes zero load-bearing vocabulary; 2 John, though brief, is doctrinally dense throughout. All baseline Romans terms reused here (χάρις/恩典, εἰρήνη/平安, πατήρ/父, θεός/神, Ἰησοῦς/耶穌, Χριστός/基督, υἱὸς θεοῦ/神嘅兒子, ἐκλογή/揀選, σάρξ within 道成肉身) are unchanged from the baseline translation_memory.json.
