Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 Peter (Koine Greek) → Cantonese

Scope and Method

This document analyzes every chapter of 2 Peter (1–3) in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, 2 Peter 1:16-21, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-section treatment of its load-bearing theological terms using the same seven fields: Original word | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Destination-language (Cantonese) rendering risk.

Baseline enforcement notice: Any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json is reused exactly as recorded there (rendering, transliteration, risk tier as a floor — risk may be elevated for this curriculum where 2 Peter’s context sharpens the collision, but the Cantonese rendering itself never changes). These are marked [Baseline TM]. New terms required for 2 Peter are marked [New] and are proposed here for entry into an extended translation memory.

Hong Kong Cantonese cultural reference points recur throughout: Taoist/Buddhist folk cosmology (十八層地獄 eighteen hells, Yama King 閻羅王, hell money burned at the Hungry Ghost Festival), Taoist internal-alchemy immortality cultivation (煉丹/內丹, 成仙/得道), Buddhist Buddha-nature teaching (佛性), spirit-writing divination (扶乩), spirit-medium consultation (問米), astrology/almanac culture (占星, 睇天象, 老黃曆), and the temple-vow transactional model (還神還願, Wong Tai Sin’s 「有求必應」). 2 Peter’s core doctrines — inspiration of Scripture, divine nature, the Lord’s return, final judgment — intersect several of these more directly than most of Romans did, so risk tiers here are frequently elevated relative to the baseline’s general treatment of cognate concepts.

PART 1 — Core Passage: 2 Peter 1:16-21 (Verse-by-Verse)

2 Peter 1:16

“For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
μῦθος (mythos) — σεσοφισμένοις μύθοις”cleverly-contrived tale/legend”Fable, legend, invented story (contrasted with historical fact); used of Greco-Roman religious/mythological narrative”myths,” “fables,” “cleverly devised tales”Peter denies the apostolic message is an invented religious legend (like Greco-Roman myth) — it rests on verified, witnessed history[New] 神話 (san4 waa2). Low. Standard word for “myth/legend” in Cantonese (e.g. 希臘神話, Greek mythology); no significant folk-religion collision, but should be paired with a clarifying gloss (“捏造嘅故仔” / “捏造嘅傳說”) so readers register that Peter is making an evidentiary contrast, not merely a genre label.
δύναμις (dynamis)“power, might, ability”Power/authority — here Christ’s messianic power, displayed proleptically at the Transfiguration and consummated at his return”power,” “might”The same power that will be displayed at the Parousia was already glimpsed at the Transfiguration — continuity between present confession and future certainty[Baseline TM — related] Baseline records δύναμις θεοῦ (Rom 1:16) as 神嘅大能, High. Here the referent is τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν… δύναμις (“the power of our Lord”); render consistently as 主耶穌基督嘅大能. High — must not be softened toward a generic “ability.”
παρουσία (parousia)“presence, arrival, coming”Technical NT term for Christ’s future visible, bodily return; can also denote a dignitary’s ceremonial state-arrival in secular Greek”coming,” “advent,” “arrival,” “presence”Anchors the doctrine of “The Certainty of Christ’s Return” — the Transfiguration was a preview-guarantee of this future event, not a myth[New] 降臨 (gong3 lam4). Critical. 降臨 is the standard Chinese Christian rendering (matches CUV) but the same word is used in Hong Kong/Cantonese folk religion for a deity “descending” during ritual invocation or spirit-medium séance (神明降臨). MANDATORY distinguishing note: Christ’s παρουσία is a single, personal, bodily, visible, historically final event witnessed by all — not a temporary ritual manifestation or a spirit’s momentary descent into a medium.
ἐπόπτης (epoptēs)“eyewitness, one who has personally observed”Term for a firsthand observer; in wider Greek usage could denote an initiate who has “seen” a mystery-cult revelation, but Peter uses it of plain historical eyewitness”eyewitnesses,” “witnesses,” “spectators”Grounds the doctrine of Scripture’s reliability in verifiable apostolic eyewitness testimony, not private mystical insight[New] 目擊者 (muk6 gik1 ze2). Medium. Must not be rendered with any term suggesting initiatory/esoteric “seeing” (e.g. avoid 得道/開悟 vocabulary); this is ordinary courtroom-style eyewitness testimony.
μεγαλειότης (megaleiotēs)“greatness, magnificence, majesty”Splendor/majesty befitting deity or supreme rank”majesty,” “greatness,” “grandeur”Describes the divine glory Peter, James, and John saw revealed in Christ at the Transfiguration[New] 威嚴 (wai1 jim4). Medium. Distinguish from 威水 (wai1 seoi2, “flashy/impressive success” — already flagged under baseline “glory” 榮耀), a status-conscious Hong Kong commercial-culture term; 威嚴 must convey dignified divine grandeur, not showy achievement.

2 Peter 1:17

“For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,‘“

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
τιμή (timē)“honor, value, price paid”Honor/worth ascribed to a person; also “price” in commercial contexts”honor,” “esteem”The Father publicly conferred honor on the Son at the Transfiguration, confirming his identity[New] 尊榮 (zyun1 wing4). Medium. Standard pairing with 榮耀; low collision but should not be reduced to 面子 (face/reputation), already flagged as forbidden under baseline “glory.”
δόξα (doxa)“glory, radiance, splendor”God’s visible radiant presence/honor”glory,” “splendor”Reuse baseline term exactly.[Baseline TM] 榮耀 (wing4 jiu6). Medium baseline tier; elevated to High in this verse given its direct pairing with the Transfiguration’s revelation of Christ’s deity.
θεὸς πατήρ (theos patēr)“God Father”God’s Fatherhood specifically toward the Son here (distinct from, but doctrinally continuous with, his Fatherhood toward adopted believers)“God the Father”Confirms the Trinitarian relationship: the Father speaks, honoring the Son[Baseline TM] 神 (san4) + 父 (fu6) → 神父 as a compound risks Roman Catholic clerical-title collision (神父 = “priest/Father” title in Cantonese Catholic usage); render as separate words: 父神 or 神,即父 to avoid the compound. High — flag explicitly: do NOT compress to 神父, which Hong Kong readers will read as the Catholic priestly title, not “God the Father.”
μεγαλοπρεπὴς δόξα (megaloprepēs doxa)“fittingly-great glory” — i.e. “the Majestic Glory”A reverential circumlocution for God himself, avoiding direct utterance of the divine Name/presence”the Majestic Glory,” “the Excellent Glory”A title for God the Father as the source of the heavenly voice at the Transfiguration[New] 極大榮光 (gik6 daai6 wing4 gwong1) — matches CUV’s established rendering. High. Must be clearly understood as a reverent title for God himself, not an impersonal radiant force.
υἱός ἀγαπητός (huios agapētos)“son, beloved”Term of unique filial intimacy and divine favor”beloved Son,” “my Son, whom I love”Confirms Christ’s unique divine Sonship, spoken audibly by the Father[Baseline TM — extended] son_of_god = 神嘅兒子 (Critical, never abbreviate). Add modifier 心愛嘅 (sam1 oi3 ge3) for ἀγαπητός: render “我心愛嘅兒子.” Critical — never drop the full phrase 神嘅兒子 in favor of a shortened “神人”-style term (per baseline prohibition).
εὐδοκέω (eudokeō) — εὐδόκησα”I was well-pleased, I delighted in”Settled divine approval/delight”I am well pleased,” “in whom I delight”The Father’s approval rests eternally on the Son — no probationary or provisional sonship[New] 喜悅 (hei2 jyut6). Medium. Standard term; low collision risk.

2 Peter 1:18

“we ourselves heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.”

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
φωνή (phōnē)“voice, sound”An audible utterance, here divine speech”voice,” “sound”Direct auditory confirmation of the Father’s testimony to the Son — historical, sensory, corroborated by multiple witnesses[New] 聲音 (sing1 jam1). Low.
οὐρανός (ouranos)“heaven, sky”The dwelling-place of God; also the physical sky”heaven,” “the heavens”The voice’s heavenly origin marks it as divine speech, not earthly opinion[New] 天 / 天上 (tin1 seong6). Low-Medium. Distinguish from impersonal fate-language 天意 already flagged under baseline “providence.”
ἅγιον ὄρος (hagion oros)“holy mountain”A site set apart because of God’s manifest presence (echoing Sinai)“holy mountain,” “sacred mountain”The Mount of Transfiguration is holy because God manifested his glory there — not because of any inherent geomantic/feng shui property of the site[New] 聖山 (sing3 saan1), building on [Baseline TM] 聖潔 (holy). Medium. Distinguish explicitly from feng shui “sacred mountain” veneration (mountains as sites of geomantic power, prominent in Hong Kong property/burial-site culture) — this mountain is holy solely because of God’s manifest presence, not innate terrestrial energy.

2 Peter 1:19

“And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,“

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
βεβαιότερον (bebaioteron)“more firm/sure/confirmed”Comparative of certainty/reliability”more fully confirmed,” “more certain,” “made more sure”The eyewitness Transfiguration event corroborates and strengthens confidence in OT prophecy — Scripture’s reliability rests on convergent, verified testimony[New] 更確定 (gang3 kok3 ding6). Medium.
προφητικὸς λόγος (prophētikos logos)“prophetic word/message”The body of OT prophetic Scripture, considered collectively”the prophetic word,” “the message of the prophets,” “prophecy”Central to “The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture” doctrine — OT prophecy is trustworthy, verified by fulfillment and eyewitness testimony[New, extends Baseline TM 預言] 預言嘅話 (jyu6 jin4 ge3 waa2). High — elevated above baseline’s Medium/Low tier for “prophecy,” since this curriculum’s core doctrine centers on Scripture’s inspired reliability; must not be reduced to a generic “prediction” comparable to fortune-telling.
λύχνος (lychnos)“lamp”A household oil lamp”lamp,” “light”Scripture illuminates a dark world until Christ’s return[New] 燈 (dang1). Low.
φωσφόρος (phōsphoros)“light-bearer, morning star”The planet Venus as seen at dawn; a herald of daybreak”morning star,” “day star”Symbol of the certain dawning of Christ’s return and full revelation[New] 晨星 (san4 sing1). Medium. Do NOT render as 明星 (modern Cantonese for “celebrity”), which would trivialize the image. Also distinguish from astrological star-sign consultation (星座運程 forecasting), common in Hong Kong pop-culture almanac practice — this is a symbol of certain future glory, not an omen to be read for guidance.

2 Peter 1:20

“knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.”

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
προφητεία γραφῆς (prophēteia graphēs)“prophecy of Scripture”Scripture’s prophetic content as a category”Scripture prophecy,” “prophecy of Scripture”Foundational claim for the inspiration doctrine: prophecy’s ultimate source is not the human prophet[Baseline TM — elevated] 預言 (jyu6 jin4). Baseline tier Medium; elevated to High here as this is the curriculum’s core-passage doctrinal claim.
ἴδιος ἐπίλυσις (idios epilysis)“one’s own release/interpretation/solving”ἐπίλυσις literally “a loosing, a solving” — here the prophet’s own private origination or interpretive invention of the message”someone’s own interpretation,” “the prophet’s own origination”Denies that OT prophecy originated from a human prophet’s private religious imagination or independent interpretive scheme[New] 個人解釋 (go3 jan4 gaai2 sik1). High. Requires a translator note: the verse is most plausibly about the prophet’s origin of the message (not a reader’s later interpretation) — a frequent misreading risk in English too. Must not be rendered in a way suggesting ordinary personal Bible interpretation by believers is forbidden.

2 Peter 1:21

“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
θέλημα ἀνθρώπου (thelēma anthrōpou)“will/wish of man”Human intention/volition as the causal source of an act”the will of man,” “human will,” “human initiative”Prophecy’s origin is explicitly NOT human will — it is divinely initiated[New] 人嘅意思 (jan4 ge3 ji3 si1). High.
φέρομαι ὑπὸ πνεύματος ἁγίου (pheromai hypo pneumatos hagiou)“being carried/borne along by the Holy Spirit”φέρω = to carry, bear, bring; passive here denotes being moved/impelled by an outside agent while retaining one’s own faculties (nautical image: a ship “borne along” by wind)“carried along by the Holy Spirit,” “moved by the Holy Spirit,” “impelled by the Holy Spirit”THE key inspiration-of-Scripture verse: the Spirit superintended human authors so that what they wrote is God’s own word, while their own personalities and language remained active (not a trance or dictation)[New] 被聖靈感動 (bei6 sing3 ling4 gam2 dung6) — matches CUV. CRITICAL. This phrase sits extremely close to 扶乩 (fu4 gei1, “spirit writing”/planchette divination), a real and historically documented Hong Kong/Cantonese folk-Taoist practice in which a deity is believed to seize and move a medium’s hand to produce written revelation, and to 問米 (spirit-medium consultation), already flagged as forbidden in the baseline for “Holy Spirit.” MANDATORY distinguishing note in all teaching materials: the Spirit’s inspiration of Scripture is not a trance-channeling or automatic-writing event in which the human author’s mind is bypassed or possessed; it is the sovereign superintendence of the Spirit working through the prophets’ own minds, personalities, and historical circumstances to produce a fully divine and fully human text, once-for-all closed in the canon — not an ongoing or repeatable revelatory technique available to any practitioner today.
ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ θεοῦ ἄνθρωποι (elalēsan apo theou anthrōpoi)“men spoke from God”Human speech with divine origin/source”men spoke from God,” “spoke as they were moved by God”The dual authorship of Scripture: genuinely human speech, genuinely divine in source and authority[New] (人)從神講出話來. High. Companion clause to the entry above; same distinguishing note applies.

PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 (Remainder: 1:1-15; core passage 1:16-21 treated above)

2 Peter 1:1-15 introduces the letter’s greeting, the doctrine of divine provision for godly living, the virtue list, and Peter’s approaching death — establishing vocabulary for “Growing in Christian Virtue” and “Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption” ahead of the core passage.

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
δοῦλος (doulos)“slave, bondservant”One wholly owned by and devoted to a master”servant,” “slave,” “bondservant”Peter’s self-identification of total devotion to Christ[New] 僕人 (buk6 jan4). Low.
ἀπόστολος (apostolos)“one sent, delegate”Delegated authoritative representative”apostle”Reuse baseline exactly.[Baseline TM] 使徒 (si2 tou4). Low.
ἰσότιμος πίστις (isotimos pistis)“faith of equal value/honor”Faith equally precious regardless of when or how one received it”a faith of equal standing,” “a faith as precious as ours”All believers share identically precious faith — no spiritually elite tier[New] 同樣寶貴嘅信心 (tung4 joeng6 bou2 gwai3 ge3 seon3 sam1), built on [Baseline TM] 信心. Medium.
δικαιοσύνη (dikaiosynē)“righteousness”Right standing/character before God”righteousness”Here: God’s own righteousness which impartially grants equally precious faith to all believers[Baseline TM] 義 (ji6). Critical. Retain baseline distinguishing note against Confucian loyalty-honor 義氣.
σωτήρ (sōtēr)“savior, deliverer”One who rescues/delivers from danger or death”Savior”Recurring title (1:1, 1:11, 2:20, 3:2, 3:18) pairing “Lord and Savior” — Christ as the exclusive agent of deliverance[New] 救主 (gau3 zyu2), built on [Baseline TM] 救恩 root. Critical. Must not be conflated with the popular Guanyin epithet “大慈大悲救苦救難” (already forbidden under baseline “salvation”) nor with any wish-granting temple deity (Wong Tai Sin).
χάρις (charis)“grace”Unmerited favor”grace”Reuse baseline exactly.[Baseline TM] 恩典 (jan1 din2). Critical.
εἰρήνη (eirēnē)“peace”Relational wellbeing/reconciliation”peace”Reuse baseline exactly.[Baseline TM] 平安 (ping4 on1). Medium.
ἐπίγνωσις (epignōsis)“full/exact knowledge”Deep, personal, relational knowing (contrasted with mere γνῶσις)“knowledge,” “full knowledge”Salvation and growth flow from a relational, personal knowing of God/Christ, not intellectual mastery or self-attained enlightenment[New] 認識 (jing6 sik1). High. 2 Peter repeatedly contrasts true ἐπίγνωσις with false teachers’ claims; must be distinguished from Buddhist self-attained “enlightenment/awakening” (開悟) — this knowing is relational and received, centered on Christ, not an inward realization achieved through practice.
θεία δύναμις (theia dynamis)“divine power”God’s own inherent, life-giving power (adjectival “divine,” θεῖος)“divine power,” “God’s power”The source of “all things pertaining to life and godliness” — a gift, not a cultivated attainment[New] 神聖嘅大能 (san4 sing3 ge3 daai6 nang4), related to [Baseline TM] 神嘅大能 (power_of_god). High. Distinguish explicitly from self-cultivated power sought through qigong/internal-alchemy practice (氣功/內丹修煉) — this power is granted through knowledge of Christ, never attained by human technique.
εὐσέβεια (eusebeia)“godliness, piety”Reverent, God-oriented life and conduct”godliness,” “piety”A key virtue-list term and repeated theme (1:3, 1:6-7, 3:11)[New] 敬虔 (ging3 kin4). Medium. Distinguish from Confucian filial piety 孝 and from ritual ancestor/temple devotion 敬拜祖先/敬神.
ἀρετή (aretē)“excellence, virtue”Moral excellence; used both of God’s own excellence (1:3) and a virtue believers are to add (1:5)“excellence,” “virtue,” “moral excellence”Context-sensitive: divine excellence (1:3) vs. a cultivated Christian virtue (1:5)[New] 美德 (mei5 dak1). Medium.
ἐπάγγελμα (epaggelma)“promise”A pledged divine commitment”promise”God’s “precious and very great promises” are the means of escaping corruption[New] 應許 (jing3 heoi2). Medium. Distinguish from a temple vow-and-fulfillment exchange (還神還願) — God’s promise is unconditionally given, not a reciprocal bargain.
κοινωνός (koinōnos)“partaker, sharer, partner”One who shares jointly in something with another”partakers,” “sharers,” “partners”Believers come to share in God’s own nature through Christ[New] 同享者 (tung4 hoeng2 ze2). High.
θεία φύσις (theia physis)“divine nature”God’s own essential character/being”divine nature,” “God’s nature”Believers become “partakers of the divine nature” — a Spirit-given, grace-based sharing in God’s moral character and immortal life through union with Christ[New] 神嘅性情 (san4 ge3 sing3 cing4) — matches CUV’s rendering of 1:4. CRITICAL. This is the single highest syncretism-risk phrase in the entire book for a Hong Kong audience: (1) Taoist internal-alchemy tradition (內丹/煉丹) teaches practitioners can cultivate their way to immortal/divine nature (得道成仙); (2) Buddhist teaching holds all beings already possess latent Buddha-nature (佛性) awaiting realization through enlightenment. CUV’s 性情 (“nature/disposition”) is markedly safer than a bare 神性 rendering (which would echo 佛性’s grammatical pattern too closely) but STILL requires an explicit, mandatory teaching note in every occurrence: this “sharing in the divine nature” is (a) granted by grace through Christ’s promises, not attained by self-cultivation technique; (b) not a pre-existing latent nature within all humanity awaiting self-realization; (c) inseparable from moral transformation and escape from corruption, not a metaphysical status achievable apart from union with Christ.
φθορά (phthora)“corruption, decay, ruin”Moral/spiritual decay and ultimate ruin, distinct from mere impermanence”corruption,” “decay”The corrupting effect of sinful desire “in the world,” from which believers escape[New] 敗壞 (baai6 waai6). High. Distinguish from the Buddhist doctrine of impermanence (無常) as a neutral cosmic law — this corruption is morally culpable decay caused by sinful desire, not an impersonal metaphysical fact to be transcended through detachment.
ἐπιθυμία (epithymia)“desire, craving, lust”Strong desire, contextually negative (sinful craving)“sinful desire,” “lust,” “corrupt desire”The agent of corruption in the world[New] 私慾 (si1 juk6). Medium.
ἀποφεύγω (apopheugō)“to flee from, escape”Decisive escape from danger”escape,” “having escaped”Believers have already escaped (past participle) the world’s corruption through God’s promises[New] 逃脫 (tou4 tyut3). Low.
ἐγκράτεια (egkrateia)“self-control, self-mastery”Mastery over one’s own impulses/desires”self-control”A virtue-list term (1:6)[New] 節制 (zit3 zai3). Low.
ὑπομονή (hypomonē)“steadfastness, endurance, perseverance”Patient endurance under trial or pressure”steadfastness,” “perseverance,” “endurance”A virtue-list term (1:6); distinct from μακροθυμία (God’s forbearance, ch.3)[New] 忍耐 (jan2 noi6) — matches CUV’s rendering at 1:6. Medium.
φιλαδελφία (philadelphia)“brotherly love/affection”Affection between fellow believers as family”brotherly affection,” “brotherly kindness”A virtue-list term (1:7), community-oriented[New] 弟兄之愛 (dai6 hing1 zi1 oi3). Low.
ἀγάπη (agapē)“love”Self-giving, covenantal love, the crowning virtue”love”The culminating virtue of the list (1:7)[New] 愛 (oi3). Medium. No baseline entry exists for “love” in Romans TM; this should be added to the shared translation memory.
ἄκαρπος (akarpos)“unfruitful, barren”Lacking productive spiritual fruit”unfruitful,” “barren”The consequence of neglecting the virtue list (1:8)[New] 唔結果子 (m4 git3 gwo2 zi2). Low.
κλῆσις / ἐκλογή (klēsis / eklogē)“calling / election”Divine summons and sovereign choice”calling,” “election""Make your calling and election sure” (1:10) — reuse baseline exactly[Baseline TM] 呼召 (fu1 siu6), 揀選 (gaan2 syun2). High.
αἰώνιος βασιλεία (aiōnios basileia)“eternal kingdom”God’s/Christ’s everlasting reign, entered at final salvation”eternal kingdom”The believer’s ultimate destination (1:11)[Baseline TM — extended] 神嘅國 (kingdom_of_god) + 永遠 modifier → 永遠嘅國 (wing5 jyun5 ge3 gwok3). Medium. Retain baseline caution against political/dynastic framing (avoid 王朝/天下).
σκήνωμα (skēnōma)“tent, tabernacle”Metaphor for the mortal body as a temporary dwelling”body” (lit. “tent”)Peter’s approaching death, described as leaving his bodily “tent” (1:13-14)[New] 帳幕 (zoeng3 mok6). Medium. Distinguish from any reincarnation-adjacent notion of the body as a vessel awaiting rebirth (投胎轉世, already forbidden under baseline “resurrection”) — this simply names mortality, not a cycle.
ἔξοδος (exodos)“departure, way out”A going-out; here euphemism for death, echoing the Exodus”departure,” “decease”Peter’s impending martyrdom, described with dignity[New] 離世 (lei4 sai3). Low.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2 is dominated by the doctrine of “False Teachers and Their Judgment,” drawing heavily on OT judgment narratives (the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, Balaam) as types establishing the certainty of eschatological judgment.

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
ψευδοπροφήτης (pseudoprophētēs)“false prophet”One who falsely claims to speak for God”false prophets”OT type for the false teachers now arising (2:1)[New, extends Baseline TM 先知] 假先知 (gaa2 sin1 zi1). High. Distinguish from a mere fortune-teller/charlatan (算命佬) — a false prophet falsely claims divine authority, a serious spiritual danger, not entertainment fraud.
ψευδοδιδάσκαλος (pseudodidaskalos)“false teacher”One who teaches false doctrine within the church”false teachers”The NT-era danger parallel to OT false prophets (2:1)[New] 假教師 (gaa2 gaau3 si1), built on [Baseline TM] 教會 root. High.
αἵρεσις (hairesis)“faction, destructive opinion”A chosen/sectarian teaching; NT usage skews toward destructive doctrinal deviation”heresies,” “destructive opinions”The false teachers secretly introduce doctrines that lead to destruction[New] 異端 (ji6 dyun1). High. Clarify this denotes doctrine that leads to destruction (ἀπωλείας), not merely “a different viewpoint” in a loose modern sense.
δεσπότης (despotēs)“master, absolute owner”Sovereign ownership-authority, stronger than κύριος in emphasizing outright possession”Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “Owner”Christ as absolute Owner-Master of those he purchased — false teachers deny this ownership (2:1)[New] 主宰 (zyu2 zoi2), distinct from [Baseline TM] 主 (lord). Critical. Distinguish from the employer/feudal-title collisions already forbidden under baseline “lord” (事頭, 老爺), and from folk-pantheon “Heavenly Sovereign” epithets (e.g. 玉皇大帝, the Jade Emperor) — 主宰 here names Christ’s unique, purchased ownership of believers, not one ruler among a folk-pantheon hierarchy.
ἀγοράζω (agorazō)“to buy, purchase”Commercial purchase; NT metaphor for redemption”bought,” “purchased,” “redeemed”Christ’s redemptive purchase of believers, which false teachers effectively deny by their conduct[New] 買贖 (maai5 suk6). Medium. Should be taught alongside 恩典 (grace) so the purchase is not misread as a cold market transaction devoid of covenant love.
ἀπώλεια (apōleia)“destruction, ruin, perdition”Final, ruinous destruction — the opposite destiny to salvation”destruction,” “perdition,” “ruin”The certain fate awaiting false teachers and those who follow them (2:1, 2:3, 3:16)[New] 滅亡 (mit6 mong4). High. Distinguish from impersonal karmic retribution (報應, already flagged under baseline “sin”) — this is a personal, judicial sentence from God, not automatic cosmic consequence.
ἀσέλγεια (aselgeia)“sensuality, debauchery”Unrestrained immoral indulgence, especially sexual”sensuality,” “debauchery,” “licentiousness”The immoral lifestyle the false teachers promote and by which they discredit “the way of truth” (2:2)[New] 淫蕩 (jam4 dong6). Medium.
πλεονεξία (pleonexia)“greed, covetousness”Insatiable desire for more, especially material gain”greed,” “covetousness”The false teachers’ financial motive for exploiting people (2:3)[New] 貪心 (taam1 sam1). Medium.
κρίσις (krisis)“judgment, judicial decision”A formal decision/verdict, often judicial”judgment,” “condemnation”God’s certain, personal judicial verdict against the wicked, held in reserve until “the day of judgment” (2:4, 2:9)[New] 審判 (sam2 pun3). Critical. Anchors “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment” doctrine — distinguish sharply from impersonal karmic retribution (報應) or fortune/misfortune framing; this is a personal moral tribunal presided over by God, with a fixed future date.
ταρταρόω (tartaroō)“to cast into Tartarus”A unique NT verb (only here), borrowing the Greek mythological term Tartarus (the abyss of divine imprisonment) for the place fallen angels are confined”cast [them] into hell,” “cast down to Tartarus”Fallen angels are already held in a place of custody awaiting final judgment — establishes the certainty of the pattern for human false teachers too[New] 落地獄 (lok6 dei6 juk6). CRITICAL. 地獄 is the standard Chinese Buddhist/folk term for the underworld hell-realm system vividly present in Hong Kong culture — the eighteen hells (十八層地獄) depicted in temple art and Chinese opera, presided over by Yama King (閻羅王), with hell-money (地獄錢) burned at the Hungry Ghost Festival (盂蘭節) to aid the dead, and rites (超度, already forbidden under baseline “salvation”) believed able to release souls from it. MANDATORY distinguishing note: this “Tartarus” is a place of custody for fallen angels awaiting a certain, final divine judgment with a fixed date — it has no multi-level karmic-ledger structure, no presiding folk-deity judge, and crucially no possibility of ritual intervention, paper-money offering, or intercessory rite to alter its outcome.
κατακλυσμός (kataklysmos)“flood, deluge”The Genesis flood”flood,” “deluge”Historical type of God’s judgment on a corrupt world (2:5)[New] 洪水 (hung4 seoi2). Low.
κῆρυξ δικαιοσύνης (kēryx dikaiosynēs)“herald of righteousness”A public proclaimer/announcer”preacher/herald of righteousness”Noah’s role: proclaiming righteousness before the flood (2:5)[New] 義嘅使者 (ji6 ge3 si3 ze2), built on [Baseline TM] 義. Low-Medium.
ὑπόδειγμα (hypodeigma)“example, pattern”A model held up for imitation or, as here, for warning”example,” “warning example”Sodom and Gomorrah stand as a warning-example of certain judgment (2:6)[New] 警戒嘅例子 (ging2 gaai3 ge3 lai6 zi2). Medium.
κυριότης (kyriotēs)“lordship, dominion, authority”Rank/order of authority (here, glorious beings/angelic authorities the false teachers blaspheme)“authority,” “dominion,” “the glorious ones”The false teachers arrogantly despise legitimate authority structures (2:10)[New] 主權 (zyu2 kyun4), related to [Baseline TM] 主 root. High. Per baseline caution on kingdom/authority language, keep this doctrinal, not framed as political-authority commentary, given Hong Kong’s political sensitivities.
βλασφημέω / βλάσφημος (blasphēmeō / blasphēmos)“to blaspheme, revile” / “blasphemer”Contemptuous, reviling speech against what is sacred or exalted”blaspheme,” “revile,” “slander”The false teachers’ arrogant, reviling speech (2:10, 2:12)[New] 褻瀆 (sit3 duk6). Medium.
ἄλογα ζῷα (aloga zōa)“irrational animals”Beasts lacking reason, driven by instinct”irrational/unreasoning animals,” “brute beasts”Metaphor for the false teachers’ instinct-driven, corrupt behavior (2:12)[New] 無理性嘅動物 (mou4 lei5 sing3 ge3 dung6 mat6). Low.

Chapter 3

Chapter 3 develops “The Certainty of Christ’s Return,” “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment,” and “Patience of God’s Timing” against scoffers who deny the Parousia by appeal to apparent cosmic uniformity.

Greek (Transliteration)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningCantonese rendering & risk
ὑπόμνησις (hypomnēsis)“reminder”The act of recalling something already known”reminder,” “remembrance”Peter’s stated purpose for both letters (3:1)[New] 提醒 (tai4 sing2). Low.
εἰλικρινὴς διάνοια (eilikrinēs dianoia)“sincere/pure mind”Unmixed, undivided understanding”sincere mind,” “wholesome understanding”The clear-thinking Peter wants to stir up in his readers (3:1)[New] 真誠嘅心 (zan1 sing4 ge3 sam1). Low.
ἐμπαίκτης (empaiktēs)“mocker, scoffer”One who derides or ridicules”scoffers,” “mockers”Those in the last days who deny the Parousia out of moral rebellion, not honest doubt (3:3)[New] 戲笑者 (hei3 siu3 ze2). High. Distinguish scoffing (a moral rejection “following their own sinful desires”) from ordinary intellectual skepticism — anchors “The Certainty of Christ’s Return” doctrine.
παρουσία (parousia)“coming, arrival”See 1:16 above”coming”The scoffers’ target of denial: “Where is the promise of his coming?” (3:4)[New] 降臨 (gong3 lam4). Critical. Same rendering and cautions as 1:16.
κατακλυσμός (kataklysmos)“flood”See ch.2 above”flood”The past flood-judgment as proof God does intervene in history, against uniformitarian scoffing (3:6)[New] 洪水 (hung4 seoi2). Low. (reused)
κρίσις (krisis)“judgment”See ch.2 above”day of judgment”The present heavens and earth are reserved for judgment and destruction of the ungodly by fire (3:7)[New] 審判 (sam2 pun3). Critical. (reused)
ἡμέρα Κυρίου (hēmera Kyriou)“the Day of the Lord”Fixed OT/NT eschatological term for God’s decisive day of judgment/salvation”the Day of the Lord,” “the day of God”The certain, fixed future day of cosmic judgment and renewal (3:10, 3:12)[New] 主嘅日子 (zyu2 ge3 jat6 zi2), built on [Baseline TM] 主. CRITICAL. Must be explicitly distinguished from an astrologically auspicious/inauspicious day determined by almanac consultation (老黃曆, already flagged under baseline “peace”/“providence”) — this is a single, fixed, certain day of God’s personal intervention in history, not a calendrical forecast.
μακροθυμέω / μακροθυμία (makrothymeō / makrothymia)“to be patient/longsuffering” / “patience, forbearance”Extended forbearance despite provocation or delay”patience,” “longsuffering,” “slow to anger”God delays judgment purposefully to give opportunity for repentance (3:9, 3:15) — distinct Greek root from ὑπομονή (ch.1)[New] 寬容 (fun1 jung4) — matches CUV’s rendering at 3:9. High. Anchors “Patience of God’s Timing” doctrine. Distinguish from a temple deity’s or ancestor’s tolerance that can simply run out within an impersonal karmic ledger — God’s patience is purposeful, aimed at repentance, not a depleting reservoir of luck or favor.
μετάνοια (metanoia)“repentance, change of mind”A genuine, God-given change of heart and direction”repentance”The purpose of God’s patience — that all reach repentance (3:9)[New] 悔改 (fui3 goi2). High. No baseline Romans entry exists for this; should be added to shared translation memory. Distinguish from ritual atonement acts (功德, 還神, already forbidden under baseline “grace”/“justification”) — it is a genuine inward change enabled by grace, not a ritual discharge of obligation.
ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi)“to perish, be destroyed”Verb form cognate with ἀπώλεια”perish”The negative outcome God’s patience aims to prevent (3:9)[New] 滅亡 (mit6 mong4). High. (same rendering as ἀπώλεια, ch.2, for consistency)
στοιχεῖα (stoicheia)“elements, basic components”Here, the heavenly bodies/elemental substances of the created order”the elements,” “the heavenly bodies”Will be dissolved/burned up at the Day of the Lord (3:10, 3:12)[New] 天象 (tin1 zoeng6) — matches CUV. Medium. 天象 also carries classical Chinese astrological usage (reading omens in the heavens for governance or fortune, echoed in feng shui/almanac culture); clarify this refers to the literal physical unmaking of the created order at Christ’s return, not a portent to be divined.
καινοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ καινὴν γῆν (kainous ouranous kai kainēn gēn)“new heavens and new earth”The renewed created order following the Day of the Lord”new heavens and new earth”The final, permanent state “in which righteousness dwells” (3:13)[New] 新天新地 (san1 tin1 san1 dei6). Medium. Distinguish from Buddhist cyclical cosmic-age doctrine (劫, kalpa cycles of destruction and recreation) or any Daoist notion of endlessly repeating cosmic renewal — this is a final, one-time, permanent renewal, not one turn of an endless wheel.
ἄσπιλος καὶ ἀμώμητος (aspilos kai amōmētos)“spotless and blameless”Ritually/morally unblemished”without spot or blemish,” “spotless and blameless”The moral goal of believers awaiting the Day of the Lord (3:14)[New] 無玷污無瑕疵 (mou4 dim3 wu1 mou4 haa4 zi3). Low-Medium.
σωτηρία (sōtēria)“salvation”See baseline”salvation""The patience of our Lord [leads to/is] salvation” (3:15)[Baseline TM] 救恩 (gau3 jan1). Critical.
ἄθεσμος (athesmos)“lawless, without restraint”Living outside moral/legal restraint”lawless people,” “unprincipled people”Those whose error believers must guard against (3:17)[New] 無法無天嘅人 (mou4 faat3 mou4 tin1 ge3 jan4). Low. Standard Cantonese idiom; appropriate here.
στηριγμός (stērigmos)“firmness, stability”Steadfast, settled condition”stability,” “steadfastness”What believers must not lose through false teachers’ error (3:17)[New] 堅固 (gin3 gu3). Low.
χάρις καὶ γνῶσις (charis kai gnōsis)“grace and knowledge”Growth categories for the closing exhortation”grace and knowledge”The letter’s final charge: “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (3:18)[Baseline TM] 恩典 (jan1 din2); [New] 知識 (zi1 sik1). Critical / Medium.

Chapter 3 reused terms (no new rendering needed, reuse exactly as above): 主 (Lord), 神 (God), 主嘅日子 (Day of the Lord), 降臨 (parousia), 審判 (judgment), 滅亡 (perish/destruction), 救恩 (salvation), 榮耀 (glory), 使徒 (apostles, 3:2), 先知 (prophets, 3:2), 聖潔 (holy, of the prophets/commandment, 3:2, 3:11).
