Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — James (Cantonese Destination Language)
Purpose
This document provides the full-book doctrine matrix for James 1–5, mapping every chapter and load-bearing section to the doctrines, risk tiers, and review routing recorded in doctrine_risk_registry.json. Doctrine names, risk levels, and review routing in this document are identical to that registry; this file adds chapter-by-chapter passage mapping and translation-risk commentary that the registry does not itself carry. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate, every verse span in James 1–5 is accounted for below — including sections that introduce no new doctrinal term, which are marked “Reviewed — no new terms” rather than silently omitted.
Risk tiers, as defined in the baseline Romans package and carried forward unchanged: Critical = human theologian review every occurrence; High = human theologian review; Medium = native speaker review; Low = automated review.
Chapter 1
| Passage | Doctrine(s) | Risk Level | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | (Salutation — “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ”) | Low | Reviewed — no new terms; reuses baseline 神, 主, 耶穌基督 exactly. | Automated review |
| 1:2–4 | Trials and the Testing of Faith | High | 試煉 must not collapse into 報應 (karmic retribution) or a punitive reading; endurance (忍耐) and maturity (成熟完全) language sits adjacent to the forbidden self-cultivation substitution 修成正果. | Human theologian |
| 1:5–8 | Wisdom from Above | High | Asking God “without doubting” (心懷二意) names practical syncretism — hedging Christian prayer with fortune-telling/feng shui consultation — not mere psychological indecision; must not be softened. | Human theologian |
| 1:9–11 | Favoritism and the Poor (thematic seed; full treatment at 2:1–7) | High | Rich/poor reversal language must retain paradox (poor exalted, rich humbled) without softening toward status-deference reflexes common in Hong Kong commercial culture. | Human theologian |
| 1:12 | Patience and the Lord’s Return (crown-of-life “blessed” language; also feeds Trials doctrine) | Medium | 有福 (μακάριος) shares gospel’s 福-root risk with New Year prosperity-greeting culture (恭喜發財); must read as God’s approval on the steadfast sufferer, not worldly luck. | Native speaker review |
| 1:13–17 | Divine Impartiality and the Source of Temptation | High | 試探 (sin-enticement) must be categorically separated from 試煉 (Fatherly testing) and from 報應; God is never the source of temptation to sin. | Human theologian |
| 1:18 | (Firstfruits / word of truth — gospel seed) | Low | Reviewed — reuses baseline 福音/道 vocabulary; no new syncretism risk beyond what baseline already documents for 福. | Automated review |
| 1:19–21 | True Religion Defined (build-up); general ethical seed | Medium | ”Slow to anger,” “implanted word” (種在心裡嘅道) must stay distinct from divinatory/almanac guidance texts consulted in Hong Kong daily life. | Native speaker review |
| 1:22–25 | Faith and Works (core doctrine seed) | Critical | 遵行道嘅人 / 淨係聽道嘅人 contrast is the structural seed of the 2:14–26 core passage; must be translated to anticipate, not contradict, the fuller treatment there. | Human theologian |
| 1:26–27 | True Religion Defined (Ethical, Not Ritual) | High | 宗教 defaults to ritual/temple association in Hong Kong (incense, fortune-stick drawing, festival observance); James’s ethical redefinition (tongue-control, care of orphans/widows) requires an explicit contrast note. | Human theologian |
Chapter 1 summary: Fully reviewed, verse 1 through verse 27. No section silently omitted.
Chapter 2
| Passage | Doctrine(s) | Risk Level | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:1–7 | Favoritism and the Poor | High | Live, present-day social reflex in Hong Kong’s status-/wealth-conscious culture, not a merely historical problem; 榮耀 must never be rendered with 面子/威水. | Human theologian |
| 2:8–13 | The Royal Law of Love; Mercy and Judgment | Medium (royal law) / High (mercy) | 至尊嘅律法 risks flattening into generic 規矩 if unqualified. 憐憫 risks echoing Guanyin’s popular epithet (“大慈大悲救苦救難”); must be grounded in God’s own character, demonstrated at the cross. | Native speaker review (royal law) / Human theologian (mercy) |
| 2:14–26 | Faith and Works (core passage); Justification Harmony (James and Paul); Monotheism and the Insufficiency of Bare Orthodoxy (2:19 specifically) | Critical / Critical / High | Highest-priority passage in the entire curriculum. 行為 must never echo 功德 or 修成正果. 稱義 requires a mandatory harmonizing note with Paul’s 算為義 at every occurrence (both quote Genesis 15:6). 獨一嘅神 must carry unmistakable exclusive-numerical force against Hong Kong’s functionally polytheistic devotional landscape; 鬼魔 (never bare 鬼) for the demons who “believe and shudder.” | Human theologian (every occurrence, no exceptions) |
Chapter 2 summary: Fully reviewed, verse 1 through verse 26. This chapter contains the curriculum’s core passage (2:14–26) and carries the highest concentration of Critical-tier risk in the book.
Chapter 3
| Passage | Doctrine(s) | Risk Level | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:1–2 | (Teacher accountability — greater judgment for teachers) | Low | Reviewed — reuses baseline register vocabulary for teaching/accountability; no new syncretism risk. | Automated review |
| 3:1–12 | Taming the Tongue; The Image of God and Human Dignity (3:9 specifically) | High / High | 地獄 (γέεννα) collides with the Ten Courts of Hell folk cosmology (十殿閻羅) and Hungry Ghost Festival hell-money rites (燒街衣) — must be taught as a single, final, divinely-appointed judgment, not a graduated ritually negotiable underworld. 神嘅形象 must not flatten into Confucian innate-goodness (性善) or Buddhist Buddha-nature (佛性). | Human theologian |
| 3:13–18 | Wisdom from Above (earthly, unspiritual, demonic wisdom contrasted with heavenly wisdom) | High | δαιμονιώδης must consistently use 鬼魔 (matching 2:19) so the demonic-source warning is not softened; risk of positive collision with feng shui/divination (術數), popularly regarded as neutral practical skill in Hong Kong. | Human theologian |
Chapter 3 summary: Fully reviewed, verse 1 through verse 18.
Chapter 4
| Passage | Doctrine(s) | Risk Level | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:1–6 | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | High | Must echo 2:23’s 朋友/φίλος vocabulary to preserve the deliberate rhetorical antithesis; “grace to the humble” (4:6) reuses baseline Critical-tier 恩典 with its anti-Wong-Tai-Sin transactional framing fully in force. | Human theologian |
| 4:7–10 | Submission to God and Resistance to the Devil | High | 魔鬼 (singular cosmic adversary) must stay distinct from 鬼魔 (2:19’s plural lesser demonic beings) and from folk fox-spirits (狐仙)/wandering-ghost categories engaged through avoidance or appeasement rites rather than direct faith-based resistance. | Human theologian |
| 4:11–12 | (Judging/speaking evil against a brother — royal law echo) | Medium | 論斷 must retain the Royal Law of Love’s (2:8) neighbor-love logic; risk of flattening into generic social-etiquette advice. | Native speaker review |
| 4:13–17 | Providence and Human Plans | High | ”若係主嘅意思” (if the Lord wills) must be read as submission to a personal, relational Lord, not a fatalistic hedge-phrase functionally equivalent to almanac/fortune-cycle consultation (運程, 天意). | Human theologian |
Chapter 4 summary: Fully reviewed, verse 1 through verse 17.
Chapter 5
| Passage | Doctrine(s) | Risk Level | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5:1–6 | Wealth and Judgment on the Oppressive Rich | Medium | Withheld wages (工錢) resonates with Hong Kong’s commercial/labor context; core vocabulary already well-established with limited syncretism exposure. | Native speaker review |
| 5:7–11 | Patience and the Lord’s Return | Medium | 主降臨 avoided in favor of 主再來 to prevent collision with forbidden 顯靈 (repeatable shrine-manifestation) framing; 有福 shares gospel’s 福-root risk, illustrated by Job’s steadfastness rather than worldly luck. | Native speaker review |
| 5:12 | Oaths and Truthful Speech | Low | 起誓 is a standard, unambiguous established term; minimal syncretism risk beyond ordinary register care. | Automated review |
| 5:13–18 | Prayer and Healing | High | 用油抹佈 must never read as an independently potent ritual substance (colliding with temple blessed-oil/Daoist exorcism-oil practice); healing attributed to “the prayer of faith” and the Lord. 醫治 (physical healing) must stay distinct from 救恩 (eternal salvation) despite both translating aspects of Greek σῴζω. | Human theologian |
| 5:19–20 | Confession and Restoration | High | 彼此認罪 collides with three distinct frameworks requiring differentiation: Catholic sacramental confession (辦告解), Buddhist ritual repentance (懺悔), and the Cantonese face-preservation reflex (唔衰得). “Cover a multitude of sins” (遮蓋咗好多罪) must be distinguished from social cover-up (大事化小). | Human theologian |
Chapter 5 summary: Fully reviewed, verse 1 through verse 20. This chapter closes the curriculum’s doctrinal arc from judgment (5:1–6) through hope (5:7–12) to restored community (5:13–20).

Full-Book Coverage Attestation
All five chapters of James have been reviewed verse-span by verse-span above. No chapter, and no verse span within a chapter, was silently omitted. Sections contributing no new doctrinal term (1:1, 1:18, 3:1–2, 5:12) are explicitly marked “Reviewed — no new terms” / Low / Automated review rather than skipped, per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate.
This document extends but does not contradict the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions. See 08_core_glossary.md for the underlying term-level analysis and 12_ai_translation_requirements.md for enforcement instructions to be extended in Phase 2.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Faith and Works
Cantonese name: 信心與行為
Key terms: faith, works, dead_faith, save_eternal, perfected_completed, doer_of_the_word_vs_hearer
Review routing: Human theologian
行為 (works) sits directly adjacent to two forbidden-substitution zones already fenced off in the baseline: Buddhist merit-accumulation (功德, e.g. temple donations, releasing captive animals 放生 to accrue merit) and the Confucian loyalty-and-honor performance code (義氣). A Hong Kong reader raised on 功德 logic can easily misread ‘justified by works’ as merit-earning salvation. Every occurrence requires a translator note that works are the fruit and evidence of already-given faith, never merit that earns grace.
Justification Harmony (James and Paul)
Cantonese name: 雅各同保羅論稱義嘅協調
Key terms: justification, imputed_righteousness, righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
James 2:24’s ‘not by faith alone’ is the single verse most vulnerable to being quoted to claim James contradicts Paul’s 唯獨因信稱義 (Romans 3:28). Hong Kong readers may also be exposed to Roman Catholic 因信及善工 catechesis or Buddhist merit frameworks, heightening the stakes of harmonizing 稱義 (James’s demonstrative vindication) with 算為義 (Paul’s forensic crediting, quoting the same Genesis 15:6 event). No segment may be approved without this harmonizing note attached.
High Risk Doctrines
Divine Impartiality and the Source of Temptation
Cantonese name: 神唔試探人、只賜美善嘅恩賜
Key terms: trial_testing, temptation_to_sin, desire_lust
Review routing: Human theologian
試煉 (Fatherly, faith-strengthening testing) must be sharply distinguished from 試探 (sin-enticement, never from God) and from 報應 (karmic retribution, a dominant Cantonese/Chinese folk-cosmology explanation for suffering). Collapsing these categories would contradict 1:17’s declaration that every good and perfect gift, and God tempts no one.
Trials and the Testing of Faith
Cantonese name: 試煉煉淨信心
Key terms: trial_testing, testing_genuineness, endurance, maturity_perfect
Review routing: Human theologian
試煉 risks collapsing into karmic-retribution framing (報應/因果) prevalent in Cantonese folk belief, making trials look like punishment rather than Fatherly refining. 成熟完全 (τέλειος) additionally sits adjacent to the baseline’s forbidden 修成正果 self-cultivation substitution and must be flagged as Spirit-produced, not self-attained.
Monotheism and the Insufficiency of Bare Orthodoxy
Cantonese name: 獨一嘅神同鬼魔嘅正統信念
Key terms: one_god, demons, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
Hong Kong’s functionally polytheistic devotional landscape (Wong Tai Sin, Guanyin, Tin Hau, ancestral spirits) means ‘one God’ must carry unmistakable exclusive-numerical force. 鬼魔 (never bare 鬼) must be used so that demons who correctly believe and shudder are not conflated with the actively venerated ancestral-spirit/問米-mediumship category common in Cantonese folk practice.
Wisdom from Above
Cantonese name: 從天上嚟嘅智慧
Key terms: wisdom, wisdom_from_above, earthly_demonic_wisdom
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Earthly wisdom’ risks positive collision with feng shui consultation and divination practice (術數), popularly regarded in Hong Kong as practical life-skill rather than a spiritually dangerous category. δαιμονιώδης must consistently use 鬼魔 (matching James 2:19) so the demonic-source warning is not softened into a vaguer ‘unspiritual’ label.
Favoritism and the Poor
Cantonese name: 偏待人同貧窮人
Key terms: favoritism, poor_and_rich, heir, glory
Review routing: Human theologian
Deferential treatment of the visibly wealthy is a live, present-day social reflex in Hong Kong’s status- and wealth-conscious commercial culture (already flagged under 面子/威水 in the baseline’s ‘glory’ entry), not merely a historical first-century problem, making this doctrine directly confrontational to common church behavior today.
Mercy and Judgment
Cantonese name: 憐憫勝過審判
Key terms: mercy, royal_law
Review routing: Human theologian
憐憫 risks echoing Guanyin devotion’s popular epithet (‘大慈大悲救苦救難’), extremely common in Hong Kong households. ‘Mercy triumphs over judgment’ must be taught as flowing from God’s own character, demonstrated supremely at the cross, not as an invocation of a folk-devotional compassion figure.
Taming the Tongue
Cantonese name: 馴服舌頭
Key terms: tongue, gehenna_hell, blessing_and_cursing, poison
Review routing: Human theologian
γέεννα rendered 地獄 collides with the elaborate folk-Buddhist/Daoist Ten Courts of Hell cosmology (十殿閻羅) and ancestor-appeasement hell-money rites (燒街衣) observed during the Hungry Ghost Festival. Must be taught as a single, final, divinely-appointed judgment, not a graduated, ritually negotiable underworld court system.
True Religion Defined (Ethical, Not Ritual)
Cantonese name: 純潔嘅宗教
Key terms: religion, orphans_and_widows
Review routing: Human theologian
宗教 carries a default Hong Kong association with ritual/temple practice (incense-offering, festival observance, fortune-stick drawing). James’s deliberately subversive ethical redefinition — true religion is tongue-control and care for orphans and widows, not ritual correctness — risks being flattened without an explicit contrast note.
The Image of God and Human Dignity
Cantonese name: 人係按神嘅形象所造
Key terms: image_of_god, tongue
Review routing: Human theologian
神嘅形象 risks flattening into Confucian innate-goodness (性善) or Buddhist inherent Buddha-nature (佛性), both immanent, self-developing views of human worth. Biblical usage names a conferred, relational dignity given once by a distinct personal Creator, which grounds James’s argument that cursing a human made in God’s likeness is self-contradictory.
Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Cantonese name: 世界嘅朋友同神嘅朋友
Key terms: friendship_with_world, spiritual_adultery, envy, friend_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Must echo James 2:23’s 朋友/φίλος vocabulary to preserve the deliberate rhetorical contrast between the two exclusive ‘friendships’ James sets against each other; losing the verbal echo weakens the chapter’s structure and risks softening the antithesis into two compatible loyalties rather than mutually exclusive ones.
Submission to God and Resistance to the Devil
Cantonese name: 順服神、抵擋魔鬼
Key terms: submit_and_resist_devil, demons
Review routing: Human theologian
魔鬼 must be reserved for the singular, personal, cosmic adversary, kept distinct from 鬼魔 (plural lesser demonic beings, per 2:19) and from the broad Cantonese folk category of fox-spirits (狐仙) and wandering ghosts, which are engaged very differently (avoidance, appeasement rites) than the direct, faith-based resistance James commands.
Providence and Human Plans
Cantonese name: 神嘅護理同人嘅計劃
Key terms: if_the_lord_wills, vapor_mist
Review routing: Human theologian
Shares the baseline’s providence-doctrine risk of collision with impersonal fate (天意) or annual fortune-forecast almanac culture (運程); ‘if the Lord wills’ must be read as submission to a personal, relational Lord’s will, not a fatalistic hedge-phrase functionally equivalent to consulting a lucky-day almanac before major decisions.
Prayer and Healing
Cantonese name: 禱告同醫治
Key terms: prayer, elders, anoint_with_oil, heal_the_sick, prayer_of_righteous
Review routing: Human theologian
用油抹佈 risks collision with folk-ritual healing/blessing practices (temple blessed oil/water, Daoist exorcism-oil rites); healing must be attributed to ‘the prayer of faith’ and the Lord who raises up, not to the oil as an independently potent ritual agent. 醫治 (physical-healing sense of σῴζω) must also be kept distinct from 救恩 (eternal salvation), since Cantonese lacks a single root verb covering both senses as Greek does.
Confession and Restoration
Cantonese name: 認罪同挽回
Key terms: confess_sins, wander_and_turn_back, cover_multitude_of_sins, save_soul_from_death
Review routing: Human theologian
彼此認罪 collides with three distinct cultural frameworks requiring careful differentiation: Roman Catholic sacramental confession (辦告解, well-known given Hong Kong’s historic Catholic population), Buddhist ritual repentance (懺悔), and the strong Cantonese face-preservation reflex against public admission of failure (唔衰得). ‘Cover a multitude of sins’ must likewise be distinguished from social cover-up (大事化小) rather than God’s gracious removal of guilt through restoration.
Medium Risk Doctrines
The Royal Law of Love
Cantonese name: 至尊嘅律法
Key terms: royal_law, law
Review routing: Native speaker review
律法 is a well-anchored baseline term, but the ‘royal/supreme’ qualifier could be flattened into generic 規矩 (rules/customs) if translators are not attentive; risk is Medium since the underlying vocabulary is already established.
Wealth and Judgment on the Oppressive Rich
Cantonese name: 財富同對富人嘅審判
Key terms: wages, lord_of_sabaoth
Review routing: Native speaker review
Withheld wages and exploitation of laborers is a socially resonant theme in Hong Kong’s commercial/labor context; risk is Medium because the core vocabulary (工錢, 萬軍之主) is already well-established with limited syncretism exposure.
Patience and the Lord’s Return
Cantonese name: 耐心等候主再來
Key terms: patience_longsuffering, parousia_return_of_lord, judge_kritēs, blessed_makarios
Review routing: Native speaker review
主降臨 should be avoided in favor of 主再來 to prevent collision with the baseline’s forbidden 顯靈 (a deity’s repeatable shrine-manifestation) framing. 有福 (μακάριος) shares the gospel’s 福-root risk of collision with New Year prosperity-greeting culture (恭喜發財) and must be clarified as God’s approval on the steadfast sufferer, exemplified by Job, not worldly luck.
Low Risk Doctrines
Oaths and Truthful Speech
Cantonese name: 起誓同真誠嘅言語
Key terms: oath_swear
Review routing: Automated review
起誓 is a standard, unambiguous established term; minimal syncretism risk beyond ordinary register care.
