Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: Gospel of John — English → Cantonese
Purpose
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the Gospel of John, covering every chapter (1–21) and every major doctrinal section identified for the curriculum. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (John): same doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. This file exists to give reviewers a chapter-anchored, book-spanning view of doctrinal load, in addition to the doctrine-keyed view already encoded in the JSON registry. The core passage, John 3:1–21, is the theological anchor of the curriculum (housing four of the nine named curriculum doctrines: New Birth and Regeneration, Eternal Life through Faith, God’s Love for the World, and Judgment and Belief/Unbelief) but is never treated as the boundary of analysis — every chapter of John is represented below.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline definitions exactly:
- Critical — mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.
Part A — Full Doctrine Matrix (34 Doctrines)
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (John) | Translation Risk / Collision Note | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word) | Critical | 1:1-3; 1:14; 1:18; 8:58; 10:30; 20:28 | 道 (Logos) collides with the Daoist Dao, an impersonal cosmic principle central to Hong Kong’s active Daoist temple culture (Wong Tai Sin). Must be taught as a personal, self-conscious, eternal divine Being, never left as bare, unexplained 道. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Incarnation | Critical | 1:14; 1:1-18 | Reused from baseline (道成肉身). Never 化身 (Guanyin-style repeatable manifestation) or 顯靈 (shrine “power manifestation”); permanent, unique assumption of human nature. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Sonship of Christ | Critical | 1:12-14,18; 3:16-18; 3:35-36; 5:19-23; 10:36; 11:4,27; 19:7; 20:31 | 獨生子 (unique eternal Sonship) must stay sharply distinct from 神嘅兒女 (believers’ new-birth sonship) and 兒子嘅名分 (adoption); collapsing these three destroys the Gospel’s uniqueness claim (20:31). | Human theologian |
| 4 | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Critical | 3:3-8; 1:12-13 | 重生 must never be read through Buddhist rebirth/reincarnation (投胎轉世); one-time, Spirit-wrought, non-cyclical new beginning. The πνεῦμα/wind wordplay (3:8) is lost in Cantonese and needs a teaching-note compensation. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | Critical | 3:15-16,36; 4:14; 5:24; 6:47,54; 10:28; 11:25-26; 17:3; 20:31 | 永生 must not be conflated with Daoist immortality-cultivation (長生不老) or Wong Tai Sin-style immortal (神仙) devotion; relational, present-beginning life (John’s own definition, 17:3), not extended physical duration. | Human theologian |
| 6 | God’s Love for the World | Critical | 3:16-17; 15:13; 17:23-26 | Unilateral, self-initiating, sacrificial love given apart from merit — parallels the baseline’s grace/Wong Tai Sin caution (“whatever you ask, you shall receive”). Must never read as love that must be petitioned or purchased through offerings. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | High | 3:18-21,36; 5:24,29; 8:24; 9:39-41; 12:46-48; 16:8-11 | 審判/定罪 must stay personal and forensic, distinct from impersonal karmic retribution (報應, already flagged under baseline “sin”). Belief/unbelief has present, settled consequences (3:18’s perfect tense), not merely delayed future ones. | Human theologian |
| 8 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Critical | 6:35,48; 8:12; 8:58; 10:7,9,11,14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1,5; 18:5-6 | Every predicated statement requires the emphatic 我就是; the absolute form (8:58; 18:5-6) must unmistakably echo Exodus 3:14’s divine self-designation, not read as a casual self-description or priority-in-age claim. | Human theologian |
| 9 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Critical | 1:32-33; 3:5-8,34; 4:24; 7:37-39; 14:16-17,26; 15:26; 16:7-15; 20:22 | 保惠師/聖靈 must be firmly distinguished from 問米 spirit-medium practice and ancestral “helper spirit” concepts actively engaged in Hong Kong folk religion; a personal, permanently indwelling Person, not a spirit summoned for consultation. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | Critical | 1:29,36; 3:14; 6:51-58; 10:11,15,17-18; 11:25; 12:24,32-33; 19:16-30; 20:1-29 | 捨命/成了 must remain voluntary, substitutionary, once-for-all FOR sinners — never externally-imposed martyrdom, never a “self-attainment through practice” framing (修成正果, forbidden under baseline justification). | Human theologian |
| 11 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Critical | 5:17-23; 10:30,33,38; 14:9-11; 17:11,21-22 | 我與父原為一 must preserve unity of essence (not mere agreement) while retaining distinction of Persons — guarding against modalism and subordinationism, and against Daoist monistic “all returns to the One” (萬物歸一) readings when extended to believers’ unity (17:11,21-22). | Human theologian |
| 12 | Deity of Christ | Critical | 1:1,18; 5:18; 8:58; 10:33; 20:28 | Reused from baseline. Co-equal, eternal divine nature, not an especially powerful or wish-granting local deity; hostile hearers in John correctly perceive (and reject) exactly this claim — must not be softened. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Lordship of Christ | Critical | 4:1; 6:68; 9:38; 11:27; 13:13-14; 20:28; 21:7,12 | Reused from baseline. Exclusive, supreme Lordship, not an employer title (事頭) or feudal honorific (老爺). John 20:28 is the Gospel’s climactic confession and must be rendered without qualification. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Resurrection of Christ | Critical | 2:19-22; 11:23-26,43-44; 20:1-29 | Reused from baseline. 復活, never 投胎轉世 or a 問米 mediumship framing. John 20’s bodily, historical event is the fulfillment of every earlier resurrection reference in the book. | Human theologian |
| 15 | True Worship in Spirit and Truth | High | 4:20-24; 9:38 | 敬拜 must be sharply distinguished from the common Hong Kong gestures 拜神/拜佛/拜祖先, all place-and-ritual-bound. “God is spirit” (4:24) must never use bare 靈, which would place God within the folk-religious spirit world. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Inspiration of Scripture | High | 5:39,46-47; 10:35; 17:17 | Reused from baseline. 17:17’s “your word is truth” shares the Greek λόγος root with the Logos-title of 1:1 but a different referent; if 道 is used for both, an explanatory note is essential to prevent conflation. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Sanctification | High | 10:36; 17:17,19 | Reused from baseline. Here applied Christologically (Father’s consecration of the Son for mission) and to disciples (“sanctified in truth”); distinguish from self-cultivation regimens (修煉) or habit-reform. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Universal Human Accountability and Sin | High | 1:29; 3:19-20; 8:21,24,34,44; 9:2-3,41; 15:22-24; 16:8-9 | Reused from baseline (罪). John 9:2-3 explicitly rejects a simplistic sin-causes-suffering link, which must not reinforce the folk-religious 報應 (karmic retribution) reading. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Mission and the Father’s Sending of the Son | Medium | 3:17; 17:3,8,18,21,23,25; 20:21 | 差遣 should echo but stay distinct from baseline’s 宣教/使徒; names the Father’s sending of the Son, the archetype of all later gospel sending — care needed given Hong Kong’s political/social climate around public religious expression. | Native speaker review |
| 20 | The New Commandment of Christlike Love | High | 13:34-35; 15:12-17 | Distinguish from Confucian filial/social duty ethics (孝順, flagged under baseline “obedience of faith”) and ritual propriety (禮, flagged under baseline “law”); the standard is specifically Christ’s own self-sacrificial love. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Assurance of Salvation | High | 6:37,39; 10:27-29; 16:33; 17:12 | Reused from baseline. Rests on Christ’s sovereign keeping power (“no one can snatch them out of my hand”) and accomplished victory, not an ongoing vow-and-favor exchange that could lapse. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Kingdom of God and Political Neutrality | Medium | 3:3,5; 18:33-38; 19:15,19-22 | John 18:36 (“my kingdom is not of this world”) is itself the scriptural warrant for the baseline’s caution to keep kingdom/kingship language doctrinal, not a contemporary political claim, given Hong Kong’s sovereignty sensitivities. | Native speaker review |
| 23 | Authority to Proclaim Forgiveness of Sins | High | 20:22-23 | 赦罪 must not be framed as a vow-fulfillment exchange (還神還願, forbidden under baseline justification/covenant); proclaimed on Christ’s finished work and the indwelling Spirit, not negotiated through ritual petition. | Human theologian |
| 24 | Wrath of God | Critical | 3:36 | 神嘅忿怒 must be distinguished from impersonal karmic retribution (報應) and from capricious folk-deity anger requiring ritual appeasement; God’s wrath is his settled, personal, righteous response to persistent unbelief, balancing 3:16’s declaration of love. | Human theologian |
| 25 | Testimony and Witness to Christ | Medium | 1:7-8,15,19-34; 3:11,26-30; 5:31-39; 8:14,18; 15:26-27; 18:37; 19:35; 21:24 | Keystone recurring motif (John the Baptist, Scripture, works, Spirit, disciples all testify); maintain courtroom/eyewitness weight consistently, not diffused into vague “sharing.” | Native speaker review |
| 26 | Light and Darkness Dualism | Medium | 1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5,39-41; 12:35-36,46 | 光/黑暗 must stay tied to Christ’s person, not diffused into generic Buddhist “enlightenment” imagery (開悟/覺悟) attained through practice; “loving darkness” (3:19) names a moral choice, not mere ignorance. | Native speaker review |
| 27 | The Good Shepherd and Pastoral Ministry | Medium | 10:1-18,27-29; 21:15-17 | Pastoral ministry (Peter’s commissioning) is grounded in and modeled after Christ’s own self-sacrificial shepherding (ch.10), not an independent leadership role or generic management task. | Native speaker review |
| 28 | Faith and Belief | High | 1:12; 3:12,15-16,18; 5:24; 6:29,35,47; 8:24; 10:37-38; 11:25-27; 20:29-31 | Reused from baseline. 信 must consistently mean personal, trusting reliance on Christ specifically, never generic piety, and never the confidence placed in fortune-telling/palm-reading (睇相算命). | Human theologian |
| 29 | Glory of Christ | High | 1:14; 2:11; 7:39; 11:4,40; 12:23,28,41,43; 17:1-5,22,24 | Reused from baseline. John 12:43’s explicit contrast of “the glory of man” with “the glory of God” directly warrants the baseline’s caution against 面子/威水 framing; the cross is presented as Christ’s glorification (“lifted up” double meaning), which must not be flattened to only literal humiliation. | Human theologian |
| 30 | Adoption and Sonship of Believers as Children of God | High | 1:12-13; 11:52 | 神嘅兒女 (believers’ status by new birth) must stay theologically distinct from both 兒子嘅名分 (adoption/inheritance framing) and 神嘅兒子/獨生子 (Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship). Conflating any of these three collapses a distinction central to John’s Christology. | Human theologian |
| 31 | Passover and Lamb of God Typology | High | 1:29,36; 2:13,23; 6:4; 11:55; 12:1; 13:1; 18:28,39; 19:14,36 | Requires OT background (Exodus 12) given assumed low OT narrative literacy; must be distinguished from transactional burnt/food offerings presented to temple deities — the direction of the gift is reversed (God provides the Lamb; worshippers do not offer one to gain favor). | Human theologian |
| 32 | Eating Christ’s Flesh and Drinking His Blood | Critical | 6:51-58 | Deliberately shocking figurative language for total reliance on Christ’s sacrificial death; must not be read literally, and must not be confused with folk-religious blood-offering/ancestor-food-offering practice, which moves in the opposite direction. | Human theologian |
| 33 | The Temple and Christ’s Resurrected Body | High | 2:13-22 | Christ’s own body, not the physical sanctuary, is the true meeting-place of God and humanity; 聖殿 must be distinguished from the generic folk temple (廟, forbidden under baseline “church”), and the shift explained with a teaching note. | Human theologian |
| 34 | Church Fellowship and Unity | Medium | 13:34-35; 15:12-17; 17:11,20-23 | Relational unity/mutual love grounded in union with Christ and patterned on Father-Son unity, not organizational uniformity, clan/native-place association (同鄉會), or sworn-brotherhood pact (結拜), both already flagged under baseline “fellowship.” | Native speaker review |
Risk summary (must match assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical: 15 · High: 13 · Medium: 6 · Low: 0 · Total requiring theologian review: 28 · Total requiring native speaker review: 6 · Total automated-only: 0
Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage (John 1–21)
Every chapter of John is represented below with its active doctrines from Part A. No chapter is silently omitted; chapters with lighter doctrinal density are explicitly marked “reviewed — supporting/narrative role” rather than left unlisted.
| Ch. | Active Doctrines (# from Part A) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 2, 3, 6 (implicit via 1:14-18 lead-in), 15 (light/darkness), 25, 29, 30, 31 | Prologue chapter; highest doctrinal density in the book alongside ch.3. Introduces Logos, Incarnation, Sonship, Lamb of God, testimony, and the distinct children-of-God vs. only-Son categories in a single chapter — flagged in the glossary as requiring dedicated theologian attention as a set. |
| 2 | 10, 14, 29, 33 | Cana sign and Temple-cleansing pericope; introduces the resurrection-as-temple-replacement claim (33), foundational for ch.11 and ch.20. |
| 3 | 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (kingdom reference), 9, 10 (lifted up, 3:14), 15, 22, 25, 28 | Core passage of the curriculum (3:1-21). Highest concentration of Critical-risk doctrine in the book: New Birth, Eternal Life, God’s Love, Judgment, Wrath of God all converge here. Treated as theological anchor, not scope boundary — chapters 1-2 and 4-21 receive equally full treatment above and below. |
| 4 | 5 (4:14), 9 (4:24), 15 | Samaritan woman narrative; introduces “God is spirit” (special-case Critical per glossary) and true worship in spirit/truth. |
| 5 | 3, 11, 12, 7, 16 | Bethesda healing and Sabbath controversy; Son’s equality with the Father and judicial authority (“the Son gives life,” “the Father judges through the Son”) introduced here ahead of ch.10 and ch.17. |
| 6 | 8 (bread of life), 10 (lay down life foreshadowed), 21, 28, 32, 5 | Bread of Life discourse; contains the first “I Am” predicate statement and the Critical eating-flesh/drinking-blood teaching (32), requiring the heaviest explanatory apparatus in the chapter. |
| 7 | 9 | ”Rivers of living water” — narrator-glossed Spirit reference; reviewed, contributes primarily to doctrine 9 rather than introducing a new doctrine. |
| 8 | 1, 8 (light of world; absolute I AM), 15, 18, 25 | Contains 8:58, one of the two highest-water-mark deity claims in the Gospel (with 20:28); mandatory theologian review. |
| 9 | 7, 15, 18, 26 | Man born blind; explicitly rejects sin-causes-suffering framework (18), a key anti-報應 teaching passage. |
| 10 | 8 (door, good shepherd), 10, 11, 12, 17, 21, 27, 28 | Good Shepherd discourse; second-highest doctrinal density after chs. 1 and 3, converging Christ’s substitutionary death, Sonship, deity, and assurance in one chapter. |
| 11 | 5, 8 (resurrection and life), 10, 14, 29, 30 (11:52), 28 | Lazarus narrative; Christ’s fifth “I Am” statement and the narrative preview/type of his own resurrection. |
| 12 | 10 (grain of wheat, lifted up), 7, 26, 29 | Triumphal entry and Greeks’ request; glory-of-man-vs-glory-of-God contrast (29) is the direct scriptural warrant for the baseline’s 面子/威水 caution. |
| 13 | 20, 34, 13 | Footwashing and new commandment; foot-washing itself is a supporting narrative detail, not a separately tracked doctrine, but frames doctrine 20 and 13. |
| 14 | 9, 8 (way, truth, life), 11 | Upper Room discourse begins; Paraclete promised, fourth-from-last “I Am” statement, Father-Son unity restated. |
| 15 | 9, 8 (true vine), 20, 34, 18 | Vine discourse and world’s hatred; final predicated “I Am” statement. |
| 16 | 9, 7, 18, 21 | Spirit’s convicting/teaching ministry (9) is the fullest single-chapter Paraclete treatment in the book. |
| 17 | 5, 6, 11, 17, 16, 19, 34, 21 | High Priestly Prayer; contains John’s own definition of eternal life (5, at 17:3) and the extension of Father-Son unity to believers (11), a passage requiring the sharpest anti-monism safeguarding in the whole book. |
| 18 | 22, 8 (absolute I AM, 18:5-6), 25, 31 | Arrest and Pilate’s first hearing; kingdom/political-neutrality doctrine (22) has its clearest scriptural warrant here (18:36, addressed fully in ch.19 continuation). |
| 19 | 10, 31, 22, 25 | Crucifixion narrative; “it is finished” (10) and Pilate’s “King of the Jews” inscription (22) are both concentrated here. |
| 20 | 14, 13, 12, 23, 9, 28, 3 | Resurrection appearances; contains the Gospel’s climactic confession (“my Lord and my God,” 20:28) and the Spirit-reception/forgiveness-authority commissioning (9, 23). |
| 21 | 27, 13, 25 | Epilogue; Peter’s restoration and shepherd-commissioning (27) modeled directly on ch.10’s Good Shepherd doctrine. |
Coverage confirmation: All 21 chapters of John are accounted for above. No chapter was found to contribute zero doctrinal content; chapters with narrower doctrinal footprints (ch.4, ch.7, ch.13, ch.21) are explicitly noted as reviewed and are shown to draw on and extend doctrines introduced in denser chapters rather than standing doctrinally empty.
Part C — Consistency Statement
This document uses exactly the 34 doctrine names, risk tiers, and review routings recorded in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json for John. No doctrine, risk tier, or routing assignment introduced here contradicts that registry or the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json. Where a doctrine is reused from the Romans baseline (Incarnation, Deity of Christ, Sonship of Christ, Resurrection of Christ, Lordship of Christ, Sanctification, Faith and Belief, Assurance of Salvation, Universal Human Accountability and Sin, Inspiration of Scripture), the risk tier carried over here is identical to the tier assigned in the Romans baseline registry, satisfying the “never contradicts the baseline” requirement.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Cantonese name: 基督嘅神性同先存性(道)
Key terms: logos, the word, before Abraham was I AM, equal with God, my Lord and my God
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 道 (Logos) is the central concept of Daoism, one of Hong Kong’s Three Teachings, and Wong Tai Sin Temple is itself a Daoist site; Hong Kong readers will hear 道 first as an impersonal cosmic principle. John’s 道 is a personal, self-conscious, eternal divine Being who ‘was with God’ and ‘became flesh.’ Teaching materials must actively distinguish this from Daoist usage at every occurrence, not merely translate and leave unexplained.
Incarnation
Cantonese name: 道成肉身
Key terms: incarnation, word became flesh, dwelt/tabernacled, flesh_natural
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, reused from baseline. NEVER 化身 (a deity’s repeatable manifestation, popularly attributed to Guanyin) or 顯靈 (a deity ‘manifesting power’ at a shrine); the incarnation is a permanent, unique taking of human nature, directly stated in John’s Prologue.
Sonship of Christ
Cantonese name: 基督嘅兒子名分
Key terms: son of God, only begotten Son, children of God
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, reused from baseline. Christ’s unique, eternal 獨生子 Sonship must remain sharply distinct from believers’ 神嘅兒女 (children of God by new birth, 1:12-13) and from 兒子嘅名分 (adoption); collapsing these three related-but-distinct Johannine categories destroys the uniqueness claim central to the Gospel’s purpose (20:31).
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Cantonese name: 重生同聖靈嘅再生工作
Key terms: born again, born of water and Spirit, flesh_natural, wind/Spirit pun
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 重生 must never be conflated with Buddhist rebirth/reincarnation (投胎轉世, already forbidden under the baseline’s resurrection doctrine); regeneration is a one-time, Spirit-wrought new beginning into permanent new life, not entry into another life-cycle. The Greek πνεῦμα/wind wordplay (3:8) is unavoidably lost in Cantonese and requires explicit teaching-note compensation.
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Cantonese name: 藉住信基督得永生
Key terms: eternal life, believe, perish, eternal_life_defined, life
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 永生 must not be conflated with Daoist immortality-cultivation (長生不老) associated with Wong Tai Sin devotion to immortals (神仙); biblical eternal life is relational (John 17:3’s own definition: knowing God through Christ) and begins now, not a technique for extending physical life indefinitely.
God’s Love for the World
Cantonese name: 神愛世人
Key terms: god so loved, the world, gave, only begotten Son
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: God’s love in 3:16 is unilateral, self-initiating, sacrificial love, given before and apart from any human merit or ritual devotion — paralleling the baseline’s grace/Wong Tai Sin caution (‘whatever you ask, you shall receive’). Must never be rendered in a way suggesting God’s love must be petitioned or earned through offerings.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Cantonese name: 七個「我就是」嘅宣告
Key terms: i_am_bread_of_life, i_am_light_of_world, i_am_door, i_am_good_shepherd, i_am_resurrection_and_life, i_am_way_truth_life, i_am_true_vine, absolute_i_am
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: every predicated statement must use the emphatic 我就是 consistently, and the absolute form (8:58; 18:5-6) must be rendered so as to unmistakably echo the divine self-designation of Exodus 3:14, not read merely as a casual self-description or priority-in-age claim. These are formal self-revelatory claims to deity requiring mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Cantonese name: 聖靈作為保惠師
Key terms: holy_spirit, paraclete, spirit_of_truth, rivers_of_living_water, spirit_convicts, receive_holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 保惠師/聖靈 must be firmly distinguished from the 問米 spirit-medium practice (already Critical in the baseline under holy_spirit) and from ancestral-spirit ‘helper’ concepts actively engaged in Hong Kong folk religion; the Paraclete is the personal, permanently indwelling third Person of the Trinity, not a spirit summoned for temporary consultation.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Cantonese name: 基督嘅代死同復活
Key terms: lamb_of_god, lay_down_life, eat_flesh_drink_blood, lifted_up, crucify, it_is_finished, resurrection, grain_of_wheat
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 捨命 and 成了 must both be preserved as voluntary, substitutionary, once-for-all accomplishments FOR sinners — never as martyrdom imposed from outside, nor as a Buddhist ‘attaining completion through practice’ framing (修成正果, already forbidden under baseline justification). 復活 reused exactly per baseline; never 投胎轉世 or 問米 mediumship imagery.
Unity of the Father and the Son
Cantonese name: 父與子嘅合一
Key terms: father_son_unity, equal_with_god, that_they_may_be_one, my_lord_my_god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 我與父原為一 must preserve unity of being/essence, not merely unity of purpose or agreement, while not denying the distinction of Persons — guarding simultaneously against modalism and subordinationism. The extension of this unity to believers (17:11,21-22) must not be softened into a generic religious-syncretism ‘all is one’ reading, a real risk given Daoist monistic concepts of cosmic oneness (萬物歸一) present in Hong Kong’s religiously plural context.
Deity of Christ
Cantonese name: 基督嘅神性
Key terms: equal_with_god, absolute_i_am, my_lord_my_god, logos
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, reused from baseline. Co-equal, eternal divine nature, not a spiritually powerful or wish-granting local deity of the kind found at Hong Kong temples; John repeatedly has hostile hearers correctly perceive (and reject) exactly this claim, which must not be softened toward ‘an especially powerful spirit.‘
Lordship of Christ
Cantonese name: 基督嘅主權
Key terms: lord, my_lord_my_god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, reused from baseline. Exclusive, supreme Lordship, not an employer-employee title (事頭) or feudal honorific (老爺); John 20:28’s ‘my Lord and my God’ is the Gospel’s climactic personal confession and must be rendered without qualification.
Resurrection of Christ
Cantonese name: 基督嘅復活
Key terms: resurrection, i_am_resurrection_and_life, receive_holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, reused from baseline. 復活, never 投胎轉世 (rebirth cycle) and never framed like a 問米 spirit-medium briefly summoning a deceased person’s spirit. John 20’s bodily, historical, once-for-all event is the narrative fulfillment of every earlier resurrection reference (chs.2,5,6,11).
Wrath of God
Cantonese name: 神嘅忿怒
Key terms: wrath_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 神嘅忿怒 must be distinguished from impersonal karmic retribution (報應, flagged in the baseline under ‘sin’) and from the capricious anger of folk deities requiring ritual appeasement; God’s wrath is his settled, righteous, personal response to persistent unbelief, balancing 3:16’s declaration of God’s love.
Eating Christ’s Flesh and Drinking His Blood
Cantonese name: 食基督嘅肉、飲基督嘅血嘅象徵意義
Key terms: eat_flesh_drink_blood, blood
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: this deliberately shocking figurative language for total reliance on Christ’s sacrificial death requires substantial explanatory teaching; must not be understood literally, and must not be confused with folk-religious blood-offering or ancestor-food-offering practice, which moves in the opposite direction (humans offering to spirits, rather than receiving Christ’s once-for-all offering).
High Risk Doctrines
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Cantonese name: 審判同信與不信
Key terms: judgment, condemned already, wrath of God, light, darkness, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH: 審判/定罪 must be kept personal and forensic, distinct from impersonal karmic retribution (報應, already flagged in the baseline under ‘sin’); belief/unbelief has present, settled consequences (3:18’s perfect tense), not merely delayed future ones, and this must not be softened.
True Worship in Spirit and Truth
Cantonese name: 用心靈同誠實敬拜神
Key terms: worship, god_is_spirit, truth
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH: 敬拜 must be sharply distinguished from the extremely common Hong Kong folk-religious gesture vocabulary of 拜神, 拜佛, and 拜祖先 — all place-and-ritual-bound practices. ‘God is spirit’ (4:24) must never be rendered with bare 靈, which would suggest God is one spirit-being among Hong Kong’s actively engaged folk-religious spirit world.
Inspiration of Scripture
Cantonese name: 聖經嘅默示
Key terms: truth, your word is truth, logos
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH, reused from baseline. ‘Your word is truth’ (17:17) uses the same Greek λόγος as the Logos-title of 1:1 but with a different referent (God’s spoken message/Scripture); if 道 is used for both, an explanatory note distinguishing the two senses is essential to avoid a Cantonese reader conflating them under the shared character.
Sanctification
Cantonese name: 成聖
Key terms: sanctification
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH, reused from baseline. Here applied Christologically to the Father’s consecration of the Son for mission and to the disciples being sanctified ‘in truth’; distinguish from self-directed cultivation regimens (修煉) or simple habit-reform.
Universal Human Accountability and Sin
Cantonese name: 全人類都當向神負責同罪嘅本質
Key terms: sin, spirit_convicts, devil
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH, reused from baseline (罪). John 9:2-3 explicitly rejects a simplistic sin-causes-suffering framework, which must not be rendered in a way that reinforces the folk-religious 報應 (karmic retribution) reading; sin is a moral offense against a personal God, exposed by the Light and the Spirit, not an automatic cosmic consequence.
The New Commandment of Christlike Love
Cantonese name: 彼此相愛嘅新命令
Key terms: new_commandment, friends_not_servants
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH: must be distinguished from Confucian filial/social duty ethics (孝順, flagged under the baseline’s ‘obedience of faith’) and from ritual propriety (禮, flagged under baseline’s ‘law’); the standard set is specifically Christ’s own self-sacrificial love, a distinctively christological ethic, not an inherited social duty code.
Assurance of Salvation
Cantonese name: 得救嘅確據
Key terms: eternal life, i_am_good_shepherd, overcome the world
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH, reused from baseline. Assurance rests on Christ’s sovereign keeping power (‘no one can snatch them out of my hand,’ 10:28-29) and his accomplished victory, not on an ongoing vow-and-favor exchange that could lapse if a ritual obligation is neglected.
Authority to Proclaim Forgiveness of Sins
Cantonese name: 宣講赦罪嘅權柄
Key terms: forgiveness_of_sins, receive_holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH: 赦罪 must not be framed as a vow-fulfillment exchange (還神還願, already forbidden in the baseline for justification/covenant); forgiveness is proclaimed on the authority of Christ’s finished work and the indwelling Spirit, not negotiated through ritual petition.
Faith and Belief
Cantonese name: 信心同相信
Key terms: believe, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH, reused from baseline. 信 must consistently mean personal, trusting reliance on Christ specifically, never generic religious piety, and never the confidence Hong Kong culture commonly places in fortune-telling/palm-reading (睇相算命).
Glory of Christ
Cantonese name: 基督嘅榮耀
Key terms: glory, glory_of_man_vs_god, lifted_up
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH, reused from baseline. John 12:43’s explicit contrast of ‘the glory of man’ with ‘the glory of God’ is direct scriptural warrant for the baseline’s caution against reducing 榮耀 to 面子 (face) or 威水 (flashy success); the cross itself is presented as Christ’s glorification (12:23; ‘lifted up’ double meaning), which must not be flattened to only literal humiliation.
Adoption and Sonship of Believers as Children of God
Cantonese name: 信徒作為神嘅兒女
Key terms: children_of_god, adoption
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH: 神嘅兒女 (believers’ status by new birth) must be kept theologically distinct from both the baseline’s 兒子嘅名分 (adoption, legal inheritance framing) and from 神嘅兒子/獨生子 (Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship); conflating any of these three collapses a distinction central to John’s Christology.
Passover and Lamb of God Typology
Cantonese name: 逾越節同神嘅羔羊嘅預表
Key terms: lamb_of_god, passover
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH: requires OT background (Exodus 12) given assumed low OT narrative literacy; the Lamb of God must be distinguished from the transactional burnt/food offerings presented to temple deities in Hong Kong folk practice — the direction of the gift is reversed, God provides the Lamb, worshippers do not offer one to gain favor.
The Temple and Christ’s Resurrected Body
Cantonese name: 聖殿同基督復活嘅身體
Key terms: temple_body, resurrection
Review routing: Human theologian
HIGH: Christ’s claim that his own body, not the physical Jerusalem sanctuary, is the true meeting-place of God and humanity is a distinctively Johannine and doctrinally loaded claim; 聖殿 must be distinguished from the generic folk temple (廟, already forbidden in the baseline for ‘church’) and the shift explained with a teaching note.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Mission and the Father’s Sending of the Son
Cantonese name: 神差遣嘅使命
Key terms: sent, logos
Review routing: Native speaker review
MEDIUM: 差遣 should echo, but be distinguished from, the baseline’s 宣教 (mission) and 使徒 (apostle, ‘one sent’); here it names the Father’s sending of the Son, the archetype of all subsequent gospel sending, requiring care given Hong Kong’s political and social climate around public religious expression.
Kingdom of God and Political Neutrality
Cantonese name: 神嘅國同政治中立
Key terms: kingdom_of_god, king_of_the_jews
Review routing: Native speaker review
MEDIUM: John 18:36 (‘my kingdom is not of this world’) is itself the clearest scriptural warrant for the baseline’s caution to keep kingdom-of-God and kingship language doctrinal rather than a contemporary political claim, given Hong Kong’s sovereignty sensitivities.
Testimony and Witness to Christ
Cantonese name: 為基督作見證
Key terms: testify
Review routing: Native speaker review
MEDIUM: 見證/作證 is a keystone recurring Johannine motif (John the Baptist, Scripture, works, Spirit, disciples all testify); consistency across all occurrences must be maintained, retaining courtroom/eyewitness weight rather than softening to vague ‘sharing.‘
Light and Darkness Dualism
Cantonese name: 光同黑暗嘅對比
Key terms: light, darkness, i_am_light_of_world
Review routing: Native speaker review
MEDIUM: 光/黑暗 must be kept tied to Christ’s person, not diffused into generic Buddhist ‘enlightenment’ imagery (開悟/覺悟) attained through practice; loving darkness (3:19) names a moral choice, not mere ignorance.
The Good Shepherd and Pastoral Ministry
Cantonese name: 好牧人同牧養事工
Key terms: i_am_good_shepherd, lay_down_life, feed_my_sheep
Review routing: Native speaker review
MEDIUM: pastoral ministry (Peter’s commissioning, 21:15-17) is grounded in and modeled after Christ’s own self-sacrificial shepherding (ch.10), not an independent leadership role; care should be taken that the delegated ‘feed/tend’ language is not read as a generic management task.
Church Fellowship and Unity
Cantonese name: 教會嘅團契同合一
Key terms: that_they_may_be_one, disciple, friends_not_servants
Review routing: Native speaker review
MEDIUM: believers’ relational unity and mutual love are grounded in union with Christ and patterned on the Father-Son relationship, not organizational uniformity, clan/native-place association (同鄉會), or sworn-brotherhood pact (結拜), both already flagged in the baseline under ‘fellowship.’
