Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: Gospel of John (Full Book) — English → Cantonese
Methodology
This document maps every Old Testament quotation, allusion, and typological pattern in the Gospel of John, chapter by chapter, and cross-references each to (a) the messianic promise it fulfills, (b) related biblical characters, (c) parallel New Testament usage — with priority given to the baseline Romans curriculum already translated for this language pair — and (d) the specific Cantonese translation sensitivity created by that connection, drawing on the risk classes already established in 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md.
Citation normalization convention: All Scripture references in this document use the normalized English form Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Romans 1:17, John 3:16) so that citations remain machine-checkable and consistent across every TRI curriculum document, regardless of destination language. When these citations appear in the final Cantonese-facing translated materials, they must be rendered per the book-name conventions already fixed in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md (e.g., Romans = 羅馬書, Genesis = 創世記, Psalms = 詩篇, Isaiah = 以賽亞書, Habakkuk = 哈巴谷書, Joel = 約珥書; John = 約翰福音, Exodus = 出埃及記, Numbers = 民數記, Deuteronomy = 申命記, Ezekiel = 以西結書, Zechariah = 撒迦利亞書, Daniel = 但以理書, Genesis = 創世記) with Arabic verse numerals retained throughout.
Risk inheritance rule: Where a cross-referenced term already carries a Critical/High/Medium/Low risk tier from the baseline Language Package or from 07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md, that tier is carried forward unchanged here; this document does not re-litigate established risk tiers, only identifies where OT/NT connections create additional translation sensitivity (e.g., need for an explanatory footnote given the baseline’s documented low OT-narrative-literacy assumption for the Hong Kong/Guangdong/Macau audience).
Every chapter of John (1–21) is represented below. Chapters with comparatively fewer direct OT quotations (13, 16, 18, 21) are still fully reviewed and their typological/thematic connections are recorded explicitly rather than omitted.
PART 1 — Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix
John 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 1:1 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Creation | (narrator); Moses (as traditional author of Genesis) | Allusion: Genesis 1:1 (opening formula “in the beginning”) | 道 (Logos) is Critical per baseline/07; must footnote the deliberate echo of Genesis 1:1 for an audience with low assumed OT-narrative literacy, so the creation-opening parallel is not lost. |
| John 1:3 | Deity of Christ; agency in creation | — | Allusion: Genesis 1:1-3; Psalm 33:6,9 (creation by God’s spoken word); conceptual background: Proverbs 8:22-31 (wisdom present at creation) | Reinforces 道 as a personal creative agent; must not echo the Daoist claim that “the Dao produces all things” (道生萬物) as an impersonal generative principle — agency must read as personal and volitional. |
| John 1:4-5 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Light motif | — | Allusion: Genesis 1:3-4 (light at creation); Isaiah 9:2 (people in darkness see a great light — messianic) | 光/黑暗 Medium per glossary; consistent rendering required across all light/darkness occurrences (chs. 1,3,8,9,12). |
| John 1:14 | Incarnation; Deity of Christ | Moses | Genesis background: Exodus 25:8-9; 40:34-35 (tabernacle, glory filling it); Exodus 33:18-23 (Moses requests to see God’s glory); Exodus 34:6 (steadfast love and faithfulness — source of “grace and truth”) | 道成肉身 Critical (reused exactly per baseline); 恩典 Critical (reused). Mandatory footnote explaining the Exodus 34:6/tabernacle background, since “grace and truth” is otherwise opaque without it. |
| John 1:17 | Law and Grace | Moses | Exodus 20:1-17 (giving of the Law at Sinai) | 律法 High (reused per baseline); direct thematic parallel to Romans 6:14 (“not under law but under grace”) and Romans 10:4 (“Christ is the end of the law”) — see Part 4 rendering rule. |
| John 1:23 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | John the Baptist; Isaiah | Direct quotation: Isaiah 40:3 | Quotation-formula consistency; must preserve linear, historical fulfillment framing (not cyclical fortune-forecast framing per baseline’s prophecy note). |
| John 1:29 | Substitutionary Death; Messianic Promise | John the Baptist | Typology: Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (lamb led to slaughter); Genesis 22:8,13 (God provides the lamb/ram in Isaac’s place) | 神嘅羔羊 High per glossary; requires OT background footnotes (Exodus 12, Isaiah 53, Genesis 22) given low OT-narrative literacy. |
| John 1:32-33 | Holy Spirit; Christ’s anointing | John the Baptist | Allusion: Genesis 1:2 (Spirit hovering over the waters); Isaiah 11:2 (Spirit of the LORD resting on him); Isaiah 42:1 (my Spirit upon him) | 聖靈 Critical (reused); must clarify the dove is a sign of the Spirit’s peaceful abiding presence, not a folk omen-bird to be divined. |
| John 1:45,49 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | Philip; Nathanael; Moses | Allusion: 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic kingship promise); general Pentateuchal/prophetic messianic expectation | 以色列嘅王 Medium per glossary; political-sensitivity caution per baseline’s kingdom_of_god note. |
| John 1:51 | Son of Man; Deity/Pre-existence | Jacob | Direct typology: Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder) | 人子 High per glossary; requires OT background footnote (Jacob’s ladder narrative largely unknown without it). |
John 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| John 2:1-11 | Sign; new-covenant abundance | Mary; the disciples | Typology: Isaiah 25:6 (rich food and wine at the eschatological feast); Amos 9:13-14; Joel 3:18 | 神蹟 Medium (reused); recommend a teaching note tying wine-abundance to the eschatological banquet, explicitly distinguishing it from Chinese banquet-toasting/prosperity-wish culture. |
| John 2:13-17 | Temple; purity of worship | — | Direct quotation: Psalm 69:9; background: Malachi 3:1-3 | 熱心 Low; quotation-formula consistency. |
| John 2:19-21 | Resurrection; Temple typology | — | Typology: 1 Kings 8:10-11; Exodus 25:8 (God’s dwelling with his people, now relocated to Christ’s body) | 聖殿 High per glossary; must be distinguished from folk temple 廟 (forbidden per baseline “church” note). |
| John 2:23 | Passover typology (structural marker) | — | Exodus 12 (Passover institution) | 逾越節 Medium (reused); recurs at John 6:4; 11:55; 12:1; 13:1; 18:28,39; 19:14 — must render identically at every occurrence to preserve John’s chronological structure. |

| John 3:8 | Sovereignty of the Spirit | — | Allusion: Ecclesiastes 11:5 (the way of the wind unknown); Ezekiel 37:9 (breath from the four winds) | High (wordplay loss already noted); footnote must clarify no connection to feng shui (風水, “wind-water”) despite the shared character 風 — a genuine proximate lexical collision risk unique to Cantonese. |
| John 3:13 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | — | Allusion: Proverbs 30:4 (“who has ascended to heaven and come down”); Deuteronomy 30:12 | Critical per 07/08. |
| John 3:14 | Substitutionary Death; typology | Moses | Direct typology: Numbers 21:4-9 (bronze serpent) | Critical; mandatory OT narrative footnote; must avoid any confusion with Chinese folk serpent/dragon symbolism (auspicious 龍/蛇 imagery) — clarify the bronze serpent is a one-time judgment-and-healing sign, not an emblem of luck or power. |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World; Substitutionary Death | Abraham (typological parallel) | Typology: Genesis 22:2,12,16 (Abraham did not withhold his only son); direct NT parallel: Romans 5:8; Romans 8:32 | Critical; see Part 4 rendering rule (shared “God so loved / did not spare his own Son” motif with Romans). |
| John 3:19-21 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | — | Conceptual background: Proverbs 4:18-19 (light/darkness paths); no direct quotation | Medium per glossary. |
| John 3:36 | Judgment; Wrath of God | — | Conceptual background: general prophetic wrath-and-mercy pairing (e.g., Nahum 1:2-3) | Critical per 07/08 (神嘅忿怒); no direct OT quotation but shares the baseline’s caution against karmic-retribution (報應) framing. |

| John 10:34-36 | Deity of Christ; Scripture’s authority | — | Direct quotation: Psalm 82:6 | High; must be carefully footnoted as a lesser-to-greater argument, not a claim of derivative god-status — significant collision risk with Hong Kong’s polytheistic folk-deity framework (眾神) if left unexplained. |

| Bronze serpent lifted up | Christ lifted up on the cross | John 3:14 (cf. Numbers 21:4-9) | Critical; avoid dragon/serpent luck-symbolism collision. |
| Manna from heaven | Bread of Life | John 6:31-51 (cf. Exodus 16) | Critical (I AM statement); manna background footnote mandatory. |
| Tabernacle/Temple, God’s dwelling | The Word made flesh; Christ’s body as the true temple | John 1:14; 2:19-21 (cf. Exodus 25; 40) | High/Critical; must distinguish from folk temple 廟. |
| Israel as vine/vineyard | Christ the True Vine | John 15:1,5 (cf. Psalm 80; Isaiah 5; Ezekiel 15,19; Hosea 10) | Critical (I AM statement); direct Romans 11 olive-tree parallel. |
| Shepherds of Israel (God/David) | Christ the Good Shepherd | John 10:1-18; 21:15-17 (cf. Ezekiel 34) | Critical; richest single OT-typology cluster in the book. |
| Jacob’s ladder | Son of Man as heaven-earth mediator | John 1:51 (cf. Genesis 28:12) | High. |
| Water from the rock | Blood and water from Christ’s side | John 19:34 (cf. Exodus 17:6; 1 Corinthians 10:4) | High; cross-NT (not Romans) typological note for future curricula. |
| Dry bones receiving breath/Spirit | Resurrection life given by Christ/the Spirit | John 11:25; 20:22 (cf. Ezekiel 37) | Critical; central to both Resurrection and Holy Spirit doctrines. |
| David fleeing across the Kidron | Christ crossing the Kidron to his arrest | John 18:1 (cf. 2 Samuel 15:23) | Medium; optional but enriching. |
PART 4 — Cross-Curriculum Parallels to Romans: Rendering-Consistency Rules
Because Romans is the baseline curriculum already translated for this language pair, every point of doctrinal or lexical overlap between John and Romans requires identical rendering of the shared component terms, even where the two books do not share a verbatim quotation. The following rules govern Phase 2 translation whenever these parallel passages are processed.
| Shared Theme / Motif | Romans Passage(s) | John Passage(s) | Cantonese Rendering Rule |
|---|
| Thesis-statement pairing: faith → (eternal) life | Romans 1:16-17 (quoting Habakkuk 2:4) | John 20:30-31 | Both are curriculum “anchor verses.” 信/信心 (faith/believe), 救恩 (salvation), and 永生 (eternal life) must be rendered with the exact component terms already fixed in translation memory in both documents; treat as twin thesis statements requiring cross-document harmonization once each is finalized. |
| God’s self-giving, sacrificial love in the Son’s death | Romans 5:8; Romans 8:32 | John 3:16 | 愛 (love), 賜/賜下 (gave), and 獨生子 (only Son) must render identically; both passages ground God’s love as unilateral and self-initiating, never a response to merit — reinforcing the baseline’s grace-vs-Wong-Tai-Sin caution. |
| Christ’s ontological equality/unity with God the Father | Romans 9:5 | John 5:17-18; John 10:30; John 17:11 | 同神平等 (equal with God) and 我與父原為一 (I and the Father are one) must be kept terminologically distinct from, yet doctrinally coherent with, Romans 9:5’s “God over all” — both affirm full deity; mandatory theologian review for all occurrences in both curricula. |
| Abraham’s faith as the pattern of justifying faith | Romans 4:1-3,16-17 (quoting Genesis 15:6) | John 8:56 | 亞伯拉罕 (Abraham) and 信 (believed) must be rendered identically; John’s “Abraham rejoiced to see my day” and Romans’s “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” both anchor on the same patriarch and the same faith-vocabulary. |
| Confession of Christ’s exclusive Lordship/Deity | Romans 10:9-10 (“Jesus is Lord,” 耶穌是主) | John 20:28 (“My Lord and my God,” 我嘅主,我嘅神) | 主 and 神 must be the exact baseline Critical terms in both; John 20:28 should be treated with the same “must remain identical across all documents” status the baseline already assigns to Romans 10:9-10. |
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles / one people of God | Romans 3:29-30; Romans 11:17-24 (olive tree) | John 10:16 (one flock, one shepherd); John 4 (Samaritan narrative) | Maintain the baseline’s caution against reinforcing any local insider/outsider or clan-based hierarchy in both; 一個群/一個牧人 (one flock, one shepherd) and 橄欖樹 (olive tree, when introduced) describe the same reality — organic unity in Christ — using different plant/flock imagery; teaching notes should draw the connection explicitly. |
| Adoption/sonship of believers vs. Christ’s unique Sonship | Romans 8:15-17 (Abba, Father; adoption, 兒子嘅名分) | John 1:12 (children of God, 神嘅兒女); John 20:17 (“my Father and your Father”) | The three-way distinction already fixed in 08_core_glossary.md (獨生子/神嘅兒子 for Christ; 兒子嘅名分 for Romans’s legal-adoption framing; 神嘅兒女 for John’s birth-framing) must be preserved without collapsing any of the three into another, even when Romans and John vocabulary appear in the same lesson. |
| Assurance of salvation / victory over hostile powers | Romans 8:31-39 (“more than conquerors”) | John 16:33 (“I have overcome the world”) | 得勝/戰勝 (overcome/conquer) vocabulary should be harmonized where both passages are taught together; assurance in both rests on Christ’s finished work, not an ongoing vow-and-favor exchange. |
| Love as the fulfillment of the law/new commandment | Romans 13:8-10 | John 13:34-35 | 彼此相愛 (love one another) and 律法 (law) must be rendered consistently; both passages ground Christian ethics in love rather than ritual/social duty (avoid 孝順, 禮 framings per baseline). |
| Kingdom of God as spiritual, not political, reign | Romans 14:17 | John 18:36-37 (“my kingdom is not of this world”) | 神嘅國 (kingdom of God, reused exactly) must remain framed as spiritual reign in both, consistent with the baseline’s Hong Kong political-sensitivity caution; John 18:36-37 is the clearest scriptural warrant for that caution and should be cross-referenced in teaching notes. |
| Universal call to believe without ethnic/social qualification | Romans 10:11-13 (quoting Isaiah 28:16; Joel 2:32) | John 3:15-16; John 3:18 (“name”) | 信 (believe) and 名 (name, Christ’s revealed identity) must retain unqualified universality in both; no local/outsider or clan-based softening permitted, per the baseline’s Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine. |
General rule: Wherever a Romans-established Critical or High risk term (恩典, 義, 稱義, 救恩, 主, 神嘅兒子, 道成肉身, 聖靈, 神, 基督, 復活, 揀選, 呼召, 律法, 罪) recurs in John under a new title or discourse (e.g., I AM statements, Paraclete teaching, the Logos prologue), the baseline rendering is reused exactly; only the new John-specific terms catalogued in 08_core_glossary.md require fresh risk assignment.
Coverage Confirmation
Every chapter of the Gospel of John (1 through 21) has been reviewed above for Old Testament quotations, allusions, typological patterns, messianic references, and parallels to the Romans baseline curriculum. No chapter was found to be free of load-bearing cross-reference material; chapters with sparser direct OT citation (13, 16, 18, 21) are explicitly documented with their typological and thematic connections rather than omitted.
This document extends, and does not contradict, 07_semantic_analysis.md, 08_core_glossary.md, and the baseline Romans Language Package. All citation forms above follow the normalized Book Chapter:Verse convention required for cross-curriculum machine consistency; Cantonese book-name rendering for final translated materials follows 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
