Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — 3 John
This document is the full doctrine matrix for 3 John, covering every verse of the book’s single chapter (1:1–14), consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (same five doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing) and with analysis/08_core_glossary.md. 3 John has no chapter divisions beyond its 14 verses; the core passage (1:1–14) is therefore identical to the full book. Per the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate, every verse is accounted for below, including verses that primarily carry epistolary convention rather than new doctrinal content.
1. Doctrine Matrix
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages (3 John) | Risk Level | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | 1:5, 1:6, 1:7, 1:8 | High | Central command to materially support (資助送行) itinerant gospel workers collides with living Hong Kong Buddhist/Daoist alms-to-monks merit culture (功德). Anchor term 接待 (“receive/welcome”) is used positively (implied of Gaius) and negatively (twice, of Diotrephes’s refusal, vv.9–10); flattening this contrast erases the letter’s central point. | Human theologian |
| Imitating Good rather than Evil | 1:11 | Critical | v.11’s logic — “whoever does good is of God … whoever does evil has not seen God” — is a diagnostic test of an existing relationship with God, not a cause of gaining one. This runs directly opposite to Hong Kong folk-religious/Buddhist merit-karma causality (行善/積善/積德 generating better fortune or rebirth). Mistranslation risks converting apostolic ethical exhortation into works-righteousness, destroying the letter’s grace logic. | Human theologian (every occurrence) |
| Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) | 1:9, 1:10 | High | φιλοπρωτεύω (“loves to be first,” v.9) has no single-word Cantonese equivalent, requiring the descriptive phrase 貪慕虛位. Illustrative parallel to Hong Kong triad “big brother” (大佬) status culture is tempting but hazardous — risks either trivializing the doctrine or wrongly criminalizing ordinary leadership ambition. 趕出教會 (expulsion, v.10) must retain forceful sense without softening into bureaucratic “membership removal,” given contemporary sensitivity to pastoral-authority abuse. | Human theologian |
| Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) | 1:12 | High | The verse’s escalating triple-witness structure (everyone / the truth itself / the elder personally) risks flattening into a single generic compliment. 見證 is also standard Hong Kong advertising vocabulary for customer testimonials (用戶見證), inviting a marketing-endorsement reading. “The truth itself bears witness” must not personify 真理 into an independent deity-like witness. | Human theologian |
| Truth and Christian Fellowship | 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:6, 1:14 | High | Dense cluster of collision-prone supporting terms: 真理 (risk of generic/Daoist 道 reading), 靈魂 (risk of folk-spirit/問米 associations outside its fixed compound), 凡事順利 (prosperity-gospel risk, cf. 恭喜發財 culture), and 弟兄 (must stay sharply distinct from 兄弟/結拜兄弟 triad sworn-brotherhood connotations). Doctrine is High overall even though constituent terms individually range Medium–High. | Human theologian |
Risk tier totals (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical = 1, High = 4, Medium = 0, Low = 0. Confirmed consistent.
2. Verse-by-Verse Coverage
Every verse of the book is listed. Verses contributing no new terms or doctrines beyond what is already captured are explicitly marked “reviewed — no new doctrinal content.”
| Verse | Content Summary | Doctrine(s) Active | Key Terms (see 08_core_glossary.md) | Coverage Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Address: “The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth” | Truth and Christian Fellowship | 長老, 該猶, 親愛嘅, 真理 | Sets the “elder” office term (long-term collision risk with clan-elder authority, see §1 Church Leadership doctrine for contrast) and the letter’s controlling term 真理. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:2 | Prayer that Gaius “may prosper in all things and be in health, as your soul prospers” | Truth and Christian Fellowship | 凡事順利, 身體健康, 靈魂 | Highest-risk verse for prosperity-gospel misreading; must subordinate physical/material 凡事順利 to spiritual 靈魂 flourishing, not equate them. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:3 | Joy at reports of Gaius’s truth, “how you walk in the truth” | Truth and Christian Fellowship | 喜樂, 行在真理中, 真理 | ”Walk” is Hebraic conduct-idiom; must not render as literal ambulation. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:4 | ”I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth” | Truth and Christian Fellowship | 喜樂, 兒女, 真理 | 兒女 here is spiritual, pastoral parentage — must not be conflated with 認契仔 folk temple-godson custom. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:5 | Address “beloved,” exhortation for faithful conduct toward “the brothers, especially strangers” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | 親愛嘅, 忠心, 弟兄, 客旅 | Introduces the hospitality command; 弟兄 vs 客旅 distinction (insider fellow-believer vs. traveling outsider) is the doctrine’s setup. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:6 | The brothers testified to Gaius’s love before the church; exhortation to send them on their way “in a manner worthy of God” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Truth and Christian Fellowship | 見證 (implicit witness sense), 愛心, 教會, 合乎神心意 | 合乎神心意 must avoid an earned-merit “worthy/deserving” construction. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:7 | They went out “for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | 主嘅名, 外邦人 | 外邦人 here carries a narrower, negatively-marked “unbelieving outsider” sense distinct from Romans’ inclusive redemptive-historical usage — flagged per 08_core_glossary.md item 4. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:8 | ”We ought to support such people, that we may be fellow workers for the truth” | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | 應該, 資助送行, 同工, 真理 | 資助送行 is the doctrine’s highest-collision term (functional almsgiving parallel to 功德); 應該 must not read as vow-debt (還神還願). Reviewed in full. |
| 1:9 | Diotrephes “who likes to put himself first” does not acknowledge John’s authority | Church Leadership and Pride | 貪慕虛位/好占首位, 教會 | Anchor verse for the Critical-adjacent High-risk Diotrephes doctrine; sole NT occurrence of the underlying Greek compound. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:10 | John’s intent to expose Diotrephes: evil talk, refusal to welcome brothers, hindering others, expelling them from the church | Church Leadership and Pride | 惡毒, 毀謗, 接待 (negative), 阻止, 趕出教會 | Contains the negative pole of 接待 (twice) that must contrast sharply with its positive use elsewhere in the letter. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:11 | ”Do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Whoever does good is of God; whoever does evil has not seen God” | Imitating Good rather than Evil | 效法, 作惡, 行善, 見過, 神 | The book’s single Critical-risk verse; causal direction (evidence-of-relationship, not cause-of-relationship) must be preserved absolutely. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:12 | Demetrius has “a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also testify, and you know that our testimony is true” | Commendation of Faithful Witness | 見證, 真理, 底米丟 | Triple-witness escalation structure must not be flattened; 見證 must not read as commercial testimonial. Reviewed in full. |
| 1:13 | ”I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink” | (Epistolary convention) | — | No new doctrinal or theological term introduced; standard ancient letter-closing convention. Reviewed — no new doctrinal content. |
| 1:14 | Hope to see Gaius soon and speak “face to face”; peace; greetings from/to friends by name | Truth and Christian Fellowship | 面對面, 平安, 朋友 | 面對面 is idiom (never literal “mouth to mouth”); 朋友 must stay visibly distinct from 弟兄 so the latter’s theological weight is not diluted. Reviewed in full. |
Coverage confirmation: All 14 verses of 3 John are accounted for above. Verse 1:13 is the only verse carrying no load-bearing theological or doctrinal term; it is explicitly noted as reviewed rather than silently omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
3. Cross-Doctrine Interactions
- Hospitality ↔ Church Leadership and Pride: Gaius’s welcoming practice (implied throughout, esp. vv.5–8) is the positive foil to Diotrephes’s refusal (vv.9–10). Any translation choice for 接待 must be able to bear both the positive and negative charge within the same short letter without requiring different Cantonese verbs — consistency here is essential to preserving the letter’s rhetorical structure.
- Imitating Good rather than Evil ↔ Commendation of Faithful Witness: Demetrius (v.12) functions as the concrete positive exemplar that v.11’s abstract exhortation (“imitate what is good”) points toward, with Diotrephes as the implicit negative exemplar. Translators must render vv.9–12 as a connected unit; a Cantonese rendering that loses the Diotrephes/Demetrius contrast will weaken the entire chapter’s argument.
- Truth and Christian Fellowship ↔ all other doctrines: 真理 is the letter’s controlling term, occurring at the opening (1:1, 1:3, 1:4), the hospitality command (1:8), and the Demetrius commendation (1:12). Translation memory must lock a single Cantonese rendering (真理) across all these occurrences per the Theological Consistency Rules established in the baseline package.
4. Consistency Statement
This doctrine matrix uses exactly the five doctrines, exactly the risk tiers, and exactly the review routing recorded in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (version 1, generated 2026-07-03). No new doctrine has been introduced and no tier has been altered. This document supplies the full-book, verse-level substantiation for that registry’s summary-level entries.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Imitating Good rather than Evil
Cantonese name: 效法良善,唔好效法邪惡
Key terms: imitate, do_good, do_evil, has_seen, god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: v.11’s logic — ‘whoever does good is of God … whoever does evil has not seen God’ — functions as a diagnostic test of already belonging to God, not a cause of becoming right with him. This runs in the opposite causal direction from Hong Kong’s living Buddhist/folk-religious merit culture, where 行善/積善/積德 (‘doing good/accumulating merit or virtue’) is understood to generate better karma or fortune — a direct collision with the same 功德/報應 concepts the baseline flags as Critical under grace, justification, and sin. Mistranslation here risks converting apostolic ethical exhortation into a de facto works-righteousness gospel, destroying the letter’s (and the whole NT’s) grace-based logic.
High Risk Doctrines
Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Cantonese name: 接待傳道嘅弟兄
Key terms: stranger, brothers, receive_welcome, send_on_journey, worthy_of_god, the_name, faithful_conduct, fellow_worker, gentiles, ought
Review routing: Human theologian
The letter’s central command to materially support (資助送行) traveling gospel workers collides directly with Hong Kong’s living Buddhist/Daoist tradition of alms-giving to monks or temple causes as 功德 (merit-generating almsgiving) — the same concept already flagged Critical in the baseline under grace/justification. Teaching must keep this hospitality a grateful, love-motivated response to grace already received, never a merit-transaction improving the giver’s spiritual standing or fortune. The anchor term 接待 (receive/welcome) is used both positively (of Gaius, implied) and negatively (twice, of Diotrephes’s refusal, vv.9-10); flattening this positive/negative contrast in translation would erase the letter’s central point.
Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Cantonese name: 教會領導人嘅驕傲(丟特腓)
Key terms: elder, love_of_preeminence, church, wicked_words, slander, hinder, cast_out, remind, content, diotrephes
Review routing: Human theologian
φιλοπρωτεύω (‘loves to be first,’ v.9) is the sole NT occurrence of this compound and has no single-word Cantonese equivalent, requiring a descriptive phrase (貪慕虛位). The vivid Hong Kong triad/gangster-film image of a forcibly-controlling status-seeker (大佬, ‘big brother’/gang boss) is a tempting but hazardous illustrative parallel: used carelessly it either trivializes the doctrine into gangster-drama entertainment or wrongly suggests ordinary church leadership ambition is criminal. Likewise 趕出教會 (forceful expulsion, v.10) must retain its violent-force sense and not be softened into bureaucratic ‘membership removal,’ given contemporary Hong Kong church-governance disputes’ sensitivity to pastoral-authority abuse.
Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
Cantonese name: 稱許底米丟嘅忠信見證
Key terms: testify, truth, demetrius
Review routing: Human theologian
The verse’s escalating triple-witness structure (testified by everyone, by the truth itself, and by the elder personally) risks being flattened into a single generic commendation if translated loosely. The anchor term 見證 is also standard Hong Kong commercial vocabulary for product testimonials/advertising endorsements (‘用戶見證’), risking a marketing-style reading rather than truthful, communal moral testimony. Additionally, ‘the truth itself bears witness’ must not be rendered so as to personify 真理 into an independent deity-like witness-figure.
Truth and Christian Fellowship
Cantonese name: 真理與基督徒團契
Key terms: truth, beloved, soul, prosper, health, joy, walk, children, love, brothers, friend, face_to_face, peace
Review routing: Human theologian
Multiple simultaneous collision risks converge in this doctrine’s supporting vocabulary: 真理 risks a generic philosophical/scientific-truth reading or conflation with the impersonal Daoist 道; 靈魂 (soul) risks activating folk-spirit/問米-mediumship associations if used carelessly outside its fixed compound form; 凡事順利 (prosper, v.2) risks a prosperity-gospel reading given Hong Kong’s commercial-luck greeting culture (恭喜發財); and 弟兄 (brothers, the church-family term) must be kept sharply distinct from colloquial 兄弟 or 結拜兄弟, given the latter’s strong triad/gangster sworn-brotherhood connotations in Hong Kong popular culture. Because these terms cluster densely across the letter’s opening, body, and closing, the doctrine as a whole carries High risk even though individual constituent terms range from Medium to High.
