Executive Summary
Executive Summary — Revelation (English → Cantonese)
Why it matters
Revelation is the highest doctrinal-risk curriculum this pipeline has processed for Cantonese to date. It combines apocalyptic-symbolic genre demands with the single most severe named cultural collision identified anywhere in this project — the dragon (龍) — plus a worship-exclusivity claim (敬拜) that lands directly on the lived religious practice of many Hong Kong believers’ own extended families. Get this Language Package wrong and Phase 2 output risks either flattening Revelation’s genre into literalism/numerology, or softening its doctrinal edges (worship, judgment, cosmic victory) into syncretism with Wong Tai Sin, Guanyin devotion, ancestor veneration, feng shui numerology, and folk underworld bureaucracy. Get it right, and this curriculum becomes one of the strongest available bridges for teaching grace, assurance, and Christ’s exclusive Lordship against genuinely well-understood folk-religious counter-models.
Key findings
- 141 total glossary terms now govern Phase 2 translation: 37 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (never re-derived) + 104 newly introduced for Revelation’s apocalyptic vocabulary.
- 90 of 141 terms (64%) are Critical or High risk — 34 Critical, 56 High, 35 Medium, 16 Low — a far steeper risk profile than Romans’ baseline glossary.
- 30 doctrines tracked; 26 require human theologian review (16 Critical + 10 High), 4 require native-speaker review, 0 are automated-only — every single doctrine in this curriculum requires at least native-speaker human review; none can be batch-approved by automation.
- The core passage (Revelation 21:1-8) alone touches at least 9 Critical-tier doctrines: New Heaven and New Earth, Grace and the Free Gift in the New Creation, Death and Hades Defeated, Judgment of the Wicked, Church as Bride of Christ, Deity and Eternality of Christ, Assurance of God’s Final Victory, Book of Life and Final Judgment, and Occult Practice/Idolatry (v.8’s vice list) — every segment in it is routed to mandatory theologian review.
- 龍 (dragon) is the single highest-risk term in the entire project to date: uniquely positive, identity-level Chinese cultural association (imperial authority, “descendants of the dragon,” dragon dance/boat festivals) collides head-on with the text’s flat identification of this figure as Satan, wholly evil and doomed.
Risks
- 龍 (dragon), chs. 12/13/16/20 — highest-severity collision in the project; requires repeated, explicit teaching-note fencing at every occurrence, never a softened substitute term.
- 敬拜/拜偶像嘅人 (worship/idolaters) — the book’s central worship-allegiance test must be taught to readers whose own relatives may currently practice household-altar, temple, or ancestral worship; requires joint theologian/native-speaker pastoral framing, not purely linguistic correction.
- 生命冊 vs. 生死簿 (book of life vs. folk register of life and death) — near-exact structural parallel with an opposite operating logic (unbribable grace vs. negotiable underworld bureaucracy); the sharpest available teaching contrast for grace, but also the sharpest risk of syncretistic misreading if left unglossed.
- 火湖/第二次死 (lake of fire/second death) vs. 十八層地獄 — risk of being read as a temporary, purgatorial stage rather than final and eternal.
- 陰間 (Hades) and ancestor-realm collision — touches active Ghost Festival (盂蘭節) and grave-sweeping obligations most Cantonese families, including Christian ones, still navigate.
- Political-sovereignty language (11:15; 17:14; 19:16; 寶座) — Hong Kong’s sovereignty-sensitive climate means triumphalist cosmic-reign language risks being heard as contemporary political commentary regardless of translator intent.
- 666 and other symbolic numbers — inversion of the culturally auspicious “lucky 6” (六六大順) is highly counter-intuitive without explicit teaching-note correction.
Opportunities
- Revelation’s own vivid contrasts (unbribable book of life vs. 生死簿; free water of life vs. 仙丹 elixirs sought through cultivation; once-secured victory vs. Wong Tai Sin’s renewable vow-exchange) give this curriculum unusually strong, concrete bridges for teaching grace-not-merit — arguably stronger illustrative material than Romans itself.
- Jewish Kiddush Hashem, Islamic Yawm al-Qiyamah, and Jewish book-of-life (Sefer HaChaim) traditions offer genuine cross-tradition contact points (documented in
04_comparative_theology.md) that can be used pastorally without blurring the Cantonese terminology itself. - The full 37-term inheritance from the Romans baseline means learners moving between curricula encounter fully consistent vocabulary for God, Christ, grace, faith, resurrection, and salvation — reinforcing rather than fragmenting prior study.
Recommended actions
- Load both
translation_memory.json(Revelation) and the Romans baseline TM before any Phase 2 segment processing; never re-derive any of the 37 inherited terms. - Route all 26 theologian-review doctrines, and every segment of the core passage (21:1-8), to mandatory human theologian review before batch approval — no automated-only or native-speaker-only shortcut for these.
- Attach the mandatory dragon/idolatry/sorcery/book-of-life teaching-note triggers specified in
12_ai_translation_requirements.mdto every occurrence, not just the first, given how frequently and positively the competing cultural associations recur in ordinary Hong Kong life. - Prioritize reviewer time using the ranked risk list in
06_linguistic_gap_analysis.md§4 (dragon; idolaters/worship; book of life; political-sovereignty language; lake of fire/second death; Hades — in that order) rather than treating all Critical-tier items as equally urgent. - Never let Phase 2 output resolve genuinely open interpretive questions (millennium scheme, identity of Babylon, timing of the beast) into the translation itself; confine interpretation to teaching notes, consistent with this package’s Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine.
