Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Colossians (English → Hebrew)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering Colossians chapters 1–4 in full. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked (Reused) and their Hebrew rendering is copied exactly, with no deviation permitted. Terms newly introduced by Colossians are marked (New) and are proposed here for addition to translation memory in subsequent Phase 1/Phase 2 steps.
Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).

B. New Terms Introduced by Colossians
Supremacy of Christ over Creation / Fullness of Deity
| English Term | Hebrew | Transliteration | Risk | Reference(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Image (of God) | צלם | tselem | High | 1:15, 3:10 | Echoes Genesis 1:27’s corporate צלם אלוהים; here applied uniquely to Christ as God’s own exact essential image, not a derivative image-bearer. |
| Invisible | בלתי נראה | bilti nir’eh | Low | 1:15, 1:16 | Standard, uncontroversial. |
| Firstborn | בכור | bekhor | Critical | 1:15, 1:18 | Rank/status term (cf. Exodus 4:22, Ps 89:27), NOT indicating Christ is a created being; must be taught alongside v.16-17. |
| Creation / created | בריאה / נברא | beri’ah / nivra | Medium | 1:15, 1:16, 1:23 | Standard. |
| Thrones | כסאות | kis’ot | Medium | 1:16 | One of four ranked-powers terms. |
| Dominions | ממשלות | memshalot | Medium | 1:16 | As above. |
| Rulers/Principalities | שרים | sarim | High | 1:16, 2:15 | Resonates with Daniel’s “sar” of nations; must affirm Christ’s absolute supremacy over, not negotiation with, these powers. |
| Authorities/Powers | שלטונות | shiltonot | Medium | 1:16, 2:15 | As above. |
| Hold together / cohere | מתקיים בו | mitkayem bo | Medium | 1:17 | Christ’s ongoing sustaining causality; cf. Proverbs 8 Wisdom resource. |
| Head (of the body) | ראש | rosh | Medium | 1:18 | Organic, vital headship — not merely administrative leadership; must be paired with 2:19’s growth-from-the-head imagery. |
| Body | גוף | guf | Medium | 1:18, 1:22, 2:11, 2:17, 2:19, 3:15 | Multiple senses: literal body, church-as-body, “body of flesh,” and the “substance” sense in 2:17 — context-sensitive. |
| Beginning (source) | ראשית | reshit | High | 1:18 | Echoes Genesis 1:1 and Proverbs 8:22; must convey source/preeminence, not mere temporal firstness. |
| Preeminent | ראשון בכל | rishon ba-kol | Medium | 1:18 | Absolute supremacy “in everything.” |
| Fullness | מלאות | melei’ut | Critical | 1:19, 2:9-10 | Anti-Gnostic/anti-emanationist force; must not be read as one divine emanation among many (risk sharpened for readers with Kabbalistic background). |
| Deity / Godhead | אלוהות | Elohut | Critical | 2:9 | Full divine essence bodily present in Christ; must be framed as compatible with Shema-unity, and as full/undivided rather than a diffuse panentheistic presence. |
| Bodily | בגופו / במַמָּשׁוּת גופנית | be-gufo / be-mamashut gufanit | Critical | 2:9 | Anti-docetic emphasis; actual, not merely apparent or symbolic, incarnate presence. |
| Dwell | לשכון | lishkon | High | 1:19, 2:9 | Root שכן shared with שכינה (Shekhinah); positive resource requiring the conceptual leap from dwelling-in-a-place to dwelling-in-a-person to be taught explicitly. |
Reconciliation through the Cross
| English Term | Hebrew | Transliteration | Risk | Reference(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reconcile / Reconciliation | השלמה (verb: השלים) | hashlamah (hishlim) | High | 1:20, 1:21-22 | Must be taught as God’s unilateral, asymmetrical initiative, not a negotiated settlement between equals (the everyday Modern Hebrew sense). |
| Making peace | עושה שלום | oseh shalom | Medium | 1:20 | Shares root with baseline “peace” (שלום); dilution-through-familiarity risk applies equally here. |
| Blood | דם | dam | Medium | 1:20 | Sacrificial/atoning resonance from OT sacrificial system. |
| Cross | צלב | tzlav | High | 1:20, 2:14 | Carries painful historical weight (instrumentalization of the cross symbol against Jewish communities); theological meaning must be taught with explicit historical sensitivity. |
| Hostile / Enmity | אויבים / איבה | oyvim / eivah | Medium | 1:21 | Positive OT resonance (Genesis 3:15); low doctrinal collision. |
| Redemption | גאולה | ge’ulah | Critical | 1:14 | Reserved term per baseline “salvation” entry guidance; must be distinguished from corporate/future ge’ulah expectation — here, a present, individual possession. |
| Forgiveness of sins | סליחת החטאים | slichat ha-chata’im | High | 1:14 | Positive resonance with Yom Kippur liturgy (סליחה, מחילה, כפרה); must be taught as final/once-for-all, not an annual repeated cycle. |
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
| English Term | Hebrew | Transliteration | Risk | Reference(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mystery | סוד | sod | High | 1:26-27, 2:2 | Risk of Kabbalistic “esoteric elite secret” connotation (the sod level of PaRDeS); Paul’s point is the opposite — now openly revealed to all saints. |
| Philosophy | פילוסופיה | filosofya | Medium | 2:8 | Not a blanket condemnation of reasoned thought; qualified by “empty deceit… human tradition.” |
| Empty deceit | הונאה ריקה | hona’ah reikah | Low | 2:8 | Descriptive; low risk. |
| Tradition (of men) | מסורת בני אדם | masoret b’nei adam | Critical | 2:8 | מסורת is deeply cherished in Jewish self-understanding (Pirkei Avot 1:1); must never be taught as a blanket critique of masorah/Oral Torah — refers to a specific local syncretistic teaching. |
| Elemental spirits / elements of the world | יסודות העולם | yesodot ha-olam | High | 2:8, 2:20 | Ambiguous between cosmic spiritual powers and elementary religious rudiments; context must disambiguate. |
| Circumcision | מילה / ברית מילה | milah / brit milah | Critical | 2:11 | Central to Jewish covenantal identity (Genesis 17); spiritualized application must not denigrate physical circumcision’s ongoing significance for Jewish believers. |
| Baptism | טבילה | tevilah | High | 2:12 | Positive resource (mikveh immersion) but must be distinguished from repeatable ritual purification — this is a once-for-all identification with Christ’s death/resurrection. |
| Record of debt | שטר חוב | shtar chov | Medium | 2:14 | Legal-debt metaphor; low-medium risk once explained. |
| Decrees | תקנות / גזרות | takanot / gzerot | Critical | 2:14, 2:20-21 | Same sensitivity as baseline “law” entry; refers to the legal indictment against us, not a blanket abolition of Torah. |
| Shadow | צל | tzel | Critical | 2:17 | Refers to festival/new moon/Sabbath; must be taught via fulfillment-not-termination hermeneutic (cf. Romans 10:4), never as denigrating the Jewish liturgical calendar. |
| Substance / Reality | ממשות | mamashut | Critical | 2:17 | The fulfilling reality found in Christ; paired directly with “shadow” above. |
| Worship of angels | עבודת מלאכים | avodat mal’akhim | Medium-High | 2:18 | Aligns with mainstream Jewish anti-intermediary monotheism (a positive point of contact); nuance needed regarding later mystical angelic speculation. |
| False humility / self-abasement (ascetic) | סיגופים | sigufim | Medium | 2:18, 2:23 | Context-sensitive: negative ascetic sense here vs. positive virtue sense (see anavah, below) in 3:12 — same Greek root, two different Hebrew words required. |
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
| English Term | Hebrew | Transliteration | Risk | Reference(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Put to death | המיתו | hamitu | Medium | 3:5 | Decisive, active mortification. |
| Old self | האדם הישן | ha-adam ha-yashan | Medium | 3:9 | Pre-conversion identity, decisively put off. |
| New self | האדם החדש (המתחדש) | ha-adam ha-chadash (ha-mitchadesh) | Medium-High | 3:10 | Echoes ברית חדשה (Jeremiah 31:31); ties personal renewal to covenant-renewal theology. |
| Image of the Creator | כצלם הבורא | ke-tselem ha-bore | High | 3:10 | Ties directly back to 1:15’s צלם; internal-consistency requirement across the letter. |
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New (Virtue List)
| English Term | Hebrew | Transliteration | Risk | Reference(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compassionate hearts | רחמים | rachamim | Low | 3:12 | Strong positive resonance (רחם, womb; divine רחמים). |
| Kindness | טוב לב | tuv lev | Medium | 3:12 | Deliberately not חסד, to preserve that term’s doctrinal reservation for “grace.” |
| Humility (virtue) | ענווה | anavah | Medium | 3:12 | Positive sense; contrast with סיגופים (2:18/2:23’s negative ascetic sense) — same Greek root, context-sensitive Hebrew choice. |
| Meekness | ענוות רוח | anavat ruach | Low | 3:12 | — |
| Patience/longsuffering | אורך אפיים | erekh apayim | Low | 3:12 | Divine-attribute resonance, Exodus 34:6 (same verse source as baseline “grace”). |
| Love (bond of perfection) | אהבה / קשר השלמות | ahavah / kesher ha-shlemut | Low | 3:14 | Foundational, uncontroversial. |
| Word of Christ | דבר המשיח | dvar ha-mashiach | Low | 3:16 | — |
| Psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | תהילים, הימנונים, שירים רוחניים | tehilim, himnonim, shirim ruchaniyim | Low | 3:16 | Strong positive resonance with the biblical Psalter itself. |
Household Codes
| English Term | Hebrew | Transliteration | Risk | Reference(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Submission (wives) | השמעות (verb: השמעו) | hisham’ut (hisham’u) | High | 3:18 | Root שמע (shema) connects to responsive covenantal “hearing,” but requires paired teaching with husbands’ love-command (3:19) to avoid a coercive reading; gender-language sensitivity applies. |
| Slaves/bondservants | עבדים | avadim | High | 3:22-25 | Dual resonance: Exodus/Passover memory and honorific עבד ה’ title; must not be read as divine endorsement of the institution of slavery — highlight the passage’s dignifying, eschatological-equality thrust (3:11). |
| Masters | אדונים | adonim | Medium | 3:22, 4:1 | Shares root with אדון (baseline “Lord”); Paul’s own wordplay (human master / heavenly Master) is preserved in Hebrew but requires clear disambiguation of sacred vs. mundane register. |
| Minister/servant (ministry role) | משרת | mesharet | Medium | 4:7, 4:17 | Must be kept terminologically distinct from עבד (slave) and שליח (apostle). |
| Fellow servant | עבד־חבר | eved-chaver | Low | 4:7 | — |
| Fellow prisoner | אסיר יחד עמו | asir yachad imo | Low | 4:10 | — |
Supporting Terms (Chapter 1 continued)
| English Term | Hebrew | Transliteration | Risk | Reference(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hope | תקווה | tikvah | High | 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 | Double resonance with הַתִּקְוָה (Israeli national anthem); must distinguish Paul’s individual, heavenly, Christ-centered hope from national-political register. |
| Love | אהבה | ahavah | Low | 1:4, 1:8, 3:14 | Foundational, uncontroversial. |
| Knowledge | דעת | da’at | Medium | 1:9-10, 2:2-3 | Relational/experiential, not merely cognitive-informational. |
| Wisdom | חכמה | chokhmah | Low | 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 3:16 | Strong positive OT resonance (Wisdom literature). |
| Afflictions (Christ’s, filling up) | יסורים | yesurim | High | 1:24 | Must not imply insufficiency in Christ’s atoning work; refers to the church’s own appointed measure of missionary suffering. |
| Mature/complete | תמים / שלם | tamim / shalem | Medium | 1:28, 4:12 | Moral/spiritual maturity, not sinless perfection; positive resonance with sacrificial “without blemish” (tamim) language. |
| Holy, blameless, above reproach | קדושים ותמימים ובלא דופי | kedoshim u-temimim u-vlo dofi | Medium | 1:22 | Sacrificial-purity vocabulary applied to believers’ final presentation. |

Critical Risk Terms
Resurrection
Approved rendering: תחיית המתים / קם
Transliteration: techiyat hametim / kam
Doctrine: Preeminence and Firstborn from the Dead / Union with Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις / συνηγέρθητε / πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Covers Christ’s own resurrection as firstborn from the dead (1:18) and believers’ being raised with him (2:12, 3:1); must never be rendered as reincarnation or a repeatable cycle.
Lord
Approved rendering: אדון
Transliteration: Adon
Doctrine: Household Codes: Slaves and Masters
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In Colossians 3:22-4:1 the same root is deliberately reused for both mundane masters (אדונים, plural) and ‘your Master in heaven’ (singular, sacred register); disambiguate by number/definiteness without erasing Paul’s own wordplay.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: בן האלוהים
Transliteration: ben ha-Elohim
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. See also the new compound term ‘beloved_son’ (בְּנוֹ הָאָהוּב) for Colossians 1:13’s Christologically-centered extension.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: התגלמות
Transliteration: hitgalmut
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: הגשמה
Original: σωματικῶς / κατοικῆσαι
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The theological frame-name relevant to 1:19, 1:22, and 2:9’s ‘fullness of deity dwelling bodily.’ No settled native Hebrew Christian precedent; requires deliberate scaffolded phrasing per baseline guidance.
Church
Approved rendering: קהילה
Transliteration: kehilah
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: עדה
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER עדה. Applies to Christ’s body (1:18, 1:24) and to named local house-fellowships (4:15-16, e.g. ‘the church in her house’).
Messiah
Approved rendering: משיח
Transliteration: mashiach
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The subject of the entire letter’s Christological argument.
Jesus
Approved rendering: ישוע
Transliteration: Yeshua
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ישו
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Always ישוע with the final ayin; never the truncated ישו under any circumstance.
God
Approved rendering: אלוהים
Transliteration: Elohim
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The one true God, whose image Christ is (1:15) and in whom all fullness dwells (1:19, 2:9).
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: רוח הקודש
Transliteration: Ruach HaKodesh
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The Spirit through whom love is experienced among believers (1:8); must be taught as a distinct, personal divine Person.
Law
Approved rendering: תורה
Transliteration: Torah
Doctrine: Law, Shadow, and Substance
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Background category for 2:14’s decrees and 2:16-17’s shadow/substance; risk is entirely in framing (never teach as abolition of Torah), consistent with baseline guidance.
Salvation
Approved rendering: ישועה
Transliteration: yeshu’ah
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: גאולה
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. גאולה remains reserved and distinct (see new term ‘redemption’ below); the baseline’s separation of the two terms is the load-bearing decision activated by Colossians 1:14.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: צלם
Transliteration: tselem
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
New term. Echoes Genesis 1:27’s צֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים, applied there to humanity corporately as derivative image-bearers. Here applied uniquely to Christ (1:15) as God’s own exact, essential Image, not a copy. This distinction must be taught explicitly, and the same word’s second referent at 3:10 (believers renewed ‘according to the image of the Creator’) must be kept terminologically linked but conceptually distinguished.
Firstborn
Approved rendering: בכור
Transliteration: bekhor
Doctrine: Firstborn of All Creation (Rank, Not Origin)
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
New term. Carries OT rank/precedence resonance (Exodus 4:22; Psalm 89:27) rather than exclusively chronological birth order. If isolated from 1:16-17 (‘in him all things were created’), risks recreating the historical Arian misreading that Christ is the first created being. Must always appear paired with the surrounding creation-agency claim. Applies also at 1:18 (‘firstborn from the dead’).
Fullness
Approved rendering: מלאות
Transliteration: melei’ut
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
New term. The entire fullness of God’s nature dwelling in Christ (1:19), clarified as ‘the fullness of deity’ bodily (2:9). Direct polemic against fragmenting divine fullness across intermediary powers. A Kabbalistically-informed reader could map this onto one sefirah/emanation among the עֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת proceeding from the hidden אֵין סוֹף, rather than the undivided fullness of deity bodily present in Christ alone. Must be taught explicitly against both the ancient and the Kabbalistic emanationist frameworks. Never abbreviate the fixed compound מְלֹאוּת הָאֱלוֹהוּת בְּגוּפוֹ to fewer than its three constituent elements at 2:9.
Deity
Approved rendering: אלוהות
Transliteration: Elohut
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
New term. The essential divine nature, the full fullness of which dwells in Christ bodily (2:9). Stands directly against the Shema’s absolute divine unity and must be framed as compatible with, not a departure from, that unity. In Kabbalistic usage can denote a diffuse divine presence pervading all reality; must not be softened into a panentheistic flattening of this verse’s specific claim. Mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence.
Bodily
Approved rendering: בגופו / במַמָּשׁוּת גופנית
Transliteration: be-gufo / be-mamashut gufanit
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: בצורה רוחנית בלבד
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
New term. The manner in which the fullness of deity dwells in Christ (2:9): actually and physically, not merely apparently. Anti-docetic emphasis; must never be softened toward ‘in human form’ or any language implying mere appearance.
Redemption
Approved rendering: גאולה
Transliteration: ge’ulah
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
New term activating the Romans baseline’s reserved-but-unused ge’ulah, kept separate there from יְשׁוּעָה. In Jewish thought denotes the great national/eschatological redemption, generally corporate and future-oriented. Colossians 1:14 claims believers already, presently, individually ‘have’ (present tense) this redemption in Christ - a significant collapsing of a future corporate category into a present individual possession that must be taught explicitly.
Tradition Of Men
Approved rendering: מסורת בני אדם
Transliteration: masoret b’nei adam
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: מסורת (bare, absolutely forbidden)
Original: παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων
Category: False Teaching
New term. מָסוֹרֶת alone is one of the most cherished words in Jewish self-understanding (Pirkei Avot 1:1’s Sinai-to-present transmission chain, basis of the Oral Torah). Paul’s phrase targets one specific local syncretistic teaching at Colossae, never masorah, Oral Torah, or Jewish tradition generally. The qualifying ‘of men’ must survive intact in every rendering; bare מסורת is never permitted as a stand-alone translation. Mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: מילה / ברית מילה
Transliteration: milah / brit milah
Doctrine: Circumcision and Covenant Identity in Christ
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
New term. Physical circumcision and its spiritualized fulfillment in Christ (‘circumcision made without hands,’ 2:11). Central to Jewish male identity from the eighth day of life (Genesis 17). Must never be taught as denigrating physical circumcision’s ongoing covenantal significance for Jewish believers’ identity. Mandatory human theologian review.
Decrees
Approved rendering: תקנות / גזרות
Transliteration: takanot / gzerot
Doctrine: Law, Shadow, and Substance
Original: δόγματα
Category: Covenant
New term. The legal requirements recorded against believers and cancelled at the cross (2:14), and the ascetic prohibitions the false teachers impose (2:20-21). Requires the same care as the baseline ‘law’ entry; refers to the indictment against us and to specific ascetic rules, never a blanket abolition of Torah itself. Framing risk, not vocabulary risk.
Shadow
Approved rendering: צל
Transliteration: tzel
Doctrine: Law, Shadow, and Substance
Original: σκιά
Category: Covenant
New term. Festival, new moon, and Sabbath named as anticipatory foreshadowings of Christ (2:17) - the Jewish liturgical calendar itself. Sits in exactly the same territory as the baseline’s Critical ‘law’ entry and Romans 10:4’s fulfillment-not-termination framing. Must never be taught as ‘the Sabbath and festivals are empty, worthless shadows to be discarded with contempt.’ Must always appear paired with substance_reality (ממשות) in the same translation unit; never rendered alone. Mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence.
Substance Reality
Approved rendering: ממשות
Transliteration: mamashut
Doctrine: Law, Shadow, and Substance
Original: σῶμα (metaphorical)
Category: Covenant
New term. The substantial reality, found in Christ, anticipated by the shadow of festival/new moon/Sabbath (2:17). Directly paired with shadow (צל) above; same fulfillment-not-termination hermeneutic and same mandatory theologian review requirement applies.
Unity Of Jews And Gentiles
Approved rendering: לא יווני ולא יהודי, לא מילה ולא עורלה
Transliteration: lo yavani ve-lo yehudi, lo milah ve-lo orlah
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία
Category: Church
Baseline-adjacent Critical doctrine (Romans ‘unity_of_jews_and_gentiles’) applied to Colossians 3:11’s dissolution of ethnic/status distinctions in the new self. Must be read through the Romans 11 grafting-in framework, never implying Israel’s replacement or erasure of ongoing distinct Jewish covenantal identity.
Beloved Son
Approved rendering: בנו האהוב
Transliteration: beno ha-ahuv
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
New compound term extending the baseline’s son_of_god (בן האלוהים) for Colossians 1:13’s specific title, ‘the Son of his love.’ Must not read as merely honorary or adoptive sonship; always used alongside, never instead of, the baseline son_of_god rendering elsewhere in the curriculum.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: חסד
Transliteration: chesed
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: חן
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reserved exclusively for the theological doctrine of grace (1:2, 1:6); never used for the ethical virtue ‘kindness’ in 3:12 (see kindness, טוב לב).
Faith
Approved rendering: אמונה
Transliteration: emunah
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ביטחון
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Trust in Christ Jesus specifically (1:4) and the ground of being raised with him (2:12).
Called
Approved rendering: קרוא
Transliteration: karu
Doctrine: The Peace of Christ Ruling the Body
Original: ἐκλήθητε
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In Colossians 3:15, the sense active is God’s summons to peace within the one body.
Calling
Approved rendering: קריאה
Transliteration: keri’ah
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Apostleship
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Retained for curriculum-wide consistency though not independently attested in Colossians itself.
Saints
Approved rendering: קדושים
Transliteration: kedoshim
Doctrine: The Mystery Now Revealed to the Saints
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Addressed directly at 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, and as the recipients of the now-revealed mystery at 1:26.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: התקדשות
Transliteration: hitkadshut
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Rejected alternatives: קידוש
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER קידוש (the Shabbat/holiday wine-blessing ritual). Reserved for the Spirit’s ongoing moral-transformation doctrine, kept distinct from סיגופים (false ascetic self-abasement, 2:18/2:23) and ענווה (the positive virtue, 3:12).
Sin
Approved rendering: חטא
Transliteration: chet
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτήματα
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The debt cancelled and forgiven in Christ (1:14, 2:13-14).
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: מלכות האלוהים
Transliteration: malchut ha-Elohim
Doctrine: Kingdom of the Beloved Son
Original: ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged base form. See the new compound term ‘kingdom_of_the_beloved_son’ (מַלְכוּת בְּנוֹ הָאָהוּב) for Colossians 1:13’s explicitly Christological extension, which must never replace this base rendering elsewhere.
Covenant
Approved rendering: ברית
Transliteration: brit
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Relevant background for ‘new self’ (3:10, resonant with Jeremiah 31:31’s ברית חדשה) and for circumcision (2:11).
Rulers Principalities
Approved rendering: שרים
Transliteration: sarim
Doctrine: Cosmic Powers Subordinate to Christ
Original: ἀρχαί
Category: Creation
New term. Third of the fixed four-term set (1:16, 2:15). Resonates with Daniel 10’s guardian ‘sar’ of nations and later Jewish national-guardian-angel angelology - a genuine teaching asset, but risks suggesting rival powers requiring negotiation or reverence, exactly what 2:18’s warning against angel-worship refutes. Christ’s absolute, unrivaled supremacy over every such rank must be unmistakable.
Beginning
Approved rendering: ראשית
Transliteration: reshit
Doctrine: Preeminence and Firstborn from the Dead
Original: ἀρχή
Category: Christology
New term. Echoes Genesis 1:1’s opening word and Proverbs 8:22’s Wisdom-as-beginning, tying Christ’s headship over the new creation (1:18) to his headship over the first creation (1:15-17) even more visibly in Hebrew than in Greek. Risk: read as mere temporal firstness rather than source/preeminence unless the Genesis/Proverbs resonance is made explicit.
Dwell
Approved rendering: לשכון
Transliteration: lishkon
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: κατοικῆσαι / κατοικεῖ
Category: Christology
New term. God’s own presence permanently residing in Christ (1:19, 2:9). Root שכן shared with שְׁכִינָה (Shekhinah) - a genuine positive resource, but Shekhinah traditionally rests in a place (Tabernacle, Temple) or ‘in the midst of’ a community, never incarnate within a single human body. This category leap from dwelling-in-a-place to dwelling-in-a-person must be taught explicitly, never assumed.
Reconcile
Approved rendering: השלמה
Transliteration: hashlamah
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἀποκαταλλάξαι / ἀποκατηλλάγητε
Category: Salvation
New term (not present in Romans baseline). Built on the root ש-ל-ם, pairing naturally with עושה שלום later in the same verse (1:20). In ordinary Modern Hebrew denotes a negotiated settlement between roughly equal parties; Paul’s usage is unilateral and asymmetrical - God reconciling hostile creation to himself while creation contributes nothing. Must appear with an explicit marker of God as sole initiating agent at every occurrence (1:20, 1:21-22).
Cross
Approved rendering: צלב
Transliteration: tzlav
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: σταυρός
Category: Salvation
New term. The specific instrument and site of cosmic reconciliation (1:20) and where the record of debt was nailed (2:14). Carries documented historical weight for Hebrew-speaking and Jewish readers (Crusades, pogroms under crucifix banners, forced conversions); theological meaning must be taught with explicit acknowledgment of, and clear distinction from, this painful history, at first occurrence in every teaching unit.
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: סליחת החטאים
Transliteration: slichat ha-chata’im
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation
New term. Full cancellation of the record of sin, presently possessed in Christ (1:14). Strong positive resonance with the Yom Kippur Al Chet liturgy’s סליחה/מחילה/כפרה formula; must be taught as final and once-for-all, not an annual repeated cycle.
Mystery
Approved rendering: סוד
Transliteration: sod
Doctrine: The Mystery Now Revealed to the Saints
Rejected alternatives: מיסטריון (transliteration - rejected as doctrinally inert)
Original: μυστήριον
Category: False Teaching
New term. A truth hidden for ages, now openly disclosed to all the saints (1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3). Later Jewish mystical tradition uses סוד as the most esoteric level of interpretation (the sod of PaRDeS), reserved for spiritual elites - the near-opposite of Paul’s point. Must always appear paired with the same verse’s ‘revealed / made known’ language so the openness, not the esotericism, is foregrounded.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: יסודות העולם
Transliteration: yesodot ha-olam
Doctrine: Warning against Worship of Angels and Elemental Spirits
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: False Teaching
New term. Ambiguous between cosmic/spiritual powers and elementary religious rudiments (2:8, 2:20) - a live scholarly debate inherited from the Greek itself, not created by translation. Require per-occurrence disambiguation notes specifying which sense is intended.
Baptism
Approved rendering: טבילה
Transliteration: tevilah
Doctrine: Baptism as Union with Christ’s Death and Resurrection
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Sanctification
New term. Ritual immersion symbolizing union with Christ’s death and resurrection (2:12). טְבִילָה is the established term for מִקְוֶה immersion (conversion, monthly purity, festival preparation) - repeatable and purity-restorative; Christian baptism here is a once-for-all identification with Christ’s own historical death/resurrection. This distinction must be taught explicitly.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: עבודת מלאכים
Transliteration: avodat mal’akhim
Doctrine: Warning against Worship of Angels and Elemental Spirits
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
New term. Cultic veneration of angelic beings, warned against as disqualifying from the prize (2:18). Mainstream Jewish theology itself sharply prohibits worship of angelic intermediaries - a genuine point of agreement worth highlighting. Residual risk: later Jewish mystical speculation (Metatron, sar ha-panim) should be acknowledged with nuance, not ignored.
New Self
Approved rendering: האדם החדש (המתחדש)
Transliteration: ha-adam ha-chadash (ha-mitchadesh)
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: τὸν νέον (τὸν ἀνακαινούμενον)
Category: Union with Christ
New term. The new, Christ-conformed identity, in a continual process of renewal (3:10). Positive resonance with בְּרִית חֲדָשָׁה (Jeremiah 31:31), tying personal renewal to covenant-renewal theology - must be taught with this connection made explicit, not assumed.
Image Of The Creator
Approved rendering: כצלם הבורא
Transliteration: ke-tselem ha-bore
Doctrine: Renewal in the Image of the Creator
Original: κατ’ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος αὐτόν
Category: Union with Christ
New term. The new self’s renewal patterned after, and restoring, the Creator’s own image (3:10). Directly ties back to 1:15’s צלם and Genesis 1:27’s צֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים; internal-consistency requirement across the whole letter’s use of tselem - must never drift phrasing independently across chapters 1 and 3.
Submission Wives
Approved rendering: השמעות (verb: השמעו)
Transliteration: hisham’ut (hisham’u)
Doctrine: Household Codes: Wives and Husbands
Original: ὑποτάσσεσθε
Category: Household
New term. The wife’s ordered relational submission within the household (3:18). Root שׁ-מ-ע (shema, ‘hear/heed’), the same root as שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל - a positive resonance connecting this posture to responsive covenantal hearing rather than coercion, but this framing collapses unless taught paired with the immediately following command to husbands (3:19, to love and not be harsh). Flag for both native speaker and theologian review given contemporary gender-language sensitivities.
Slaves
Approved rendering: עבדים
Transliteration: avadim
Doctrine: Household Codes: Slaves and Masters
Original: δοῦλοι
Category: Household
New term. Household slaves/bondservants addressed directly regarding service and inheritance-reward (3:22-25). Rich double resonance (‘עֲבָדִים הָיִינוּ,’ the Passover Haggadah’s central refrain; the honorific ‘עֶבֶד ה” of Moses/prophets) - a genuine asset, but requires careful handling of the real history of chattel slavery the passage describes without divinely endorsing; must highlight the passage’s subversive, dignifying, eschatological-equality thrust (3:11).
Hope
Approved rendering: תקווה
Transliteration: tikvah
Doctrine: Hope of Glory
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Eschatology
New term. Eschatological certainty grounded in Christ, laid up in heaven (1:5) and Christ himself as ‘the hope of glory’ (1:27, 3:4). Carries a double resonance specific to Hebrew: title/central word of ‘הַתִּקְוָה,’ the Israeli national anthem’s national-restoration theme. Must distinguish Paul’s individual, heavenly, Christ-centered hope from that national-political register, without dismissing the word’s positive emotional resonance.
Afflictions
Approved rendering: יסורים
Transliteration: yesurim
Doctrine: Paul’s Sufferings for the Church
Original: θλίψεις
Category: Eschatology
New term. Paul’s sufferings, ‘filling up what is lacking’ in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of the church (1:24). Must never imply insufficiency in Christ’s atoning work (contradicted by 1:19-20, 2:9-10); refers to the church’s own appointed measure of missionary suffering.
Kingdom Of The Beloved Son
Approved rendering: מלכות בנו האהוב
Transliteration: malchut beno ha-ahuv
Doctrine: Kingdom of the Beloved Son
New compound term extending the baseline’s kingdom_of_god with an explicit Christological center (1:13, ‘the kingdom of the Son of his love’). Must be distinguished from Jewish national/territorial kingdom expectation tied to the Land, while affirming this is a real, present transfer of allegiance and citizenship, not merely a future hope.
Medium Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: הבשורה
Transliteration: ha-besorah
Doctrine: Gospel Proclaimed and Growing
Rejected alternatives: חדשות טובות
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Must be qualified as the specific proclamation growing and bearing fruit among the Colossians (1:5-6, 1:23, 1:28), never generic good news.
Peace
Approved rendering: שלום
Transliteration: shalom
Doctrine: The Peace of Christ Ruling the Body
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Applies at 1:2, 1:20 (compound עושה שלום), and 3:15; dilution-through-everyday-greeting-ubiquity risk applies with equal force in every occurrence.
Apostle
Approved rendering: שליח
Transliteration: shaliach
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Apostleship
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Must be kept terminologically distinct from מְשָׁרֵת (minister) and עֶבֶד (slave) in Colossians 3-4’s household/ministry vocabulary.
Holy
Approved rendering: קדוש
Transliteration: kadosh
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Applies to believers’ future presentation (1:22, in the compound קדושים ותמימים ובלא דופי) and the virtue to be clothed with (3:12).
Gentiles
Approved rendering: גויים
Transliteration: goyim
Doctrine: The Mystery Now Revealed to the Saints
Rejected alternatives: עמים
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The nations among whom the mystery of Christ is proclaimed (1:27).
Glory
Approved rendering: כבוד
Transliteration: kavod
Doctrine: Hope of Glory
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Applies to ‘the riches of the glory of this mystery’ (1:27) and believers’ future glory with Christ (3:4); avoid the colloquial ‘kol hakavod’ register.
Father
Approved rendering: אבינו
Transliteration: Avinu
Doctrine: Thanksgiving and Prayer
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. God addressed in thanksgiving (1:2, 1:12, 3:17).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: כוח האלוהים
Transliteration: koach ha-Elohim
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Rejected alternatives: גבורת האל
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER גבורה (Kabbalistic sefirah). Applies to God’s power at work in Paul’s ministry and believers’ endurance (1:11, 1:29).
Mission
Approved rendering: שליחות
Transliteration: shlichut
Doctrine: Gospel Ministry and Mission
Original: ἀποστολή / διακονία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Distinguish from the secular Jewish-Agency-emissary sense; this is Paul’s gospel proclamation ministry (1:23-29).
Creation
Approved rendering: בריאה / נברא
Transliteration: beri’ah / nivra
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίσις / ἐκτίσθη
Category: Creation
New term. The totality of everything that exists, created in, through, and for Christ (1:15-16, 1:23).
Thrones
Approved rendering: כסאות
Transliteration: kis’ot
Doctrine: Cosmic Powers Subordinate to Christ
Original: θρόνοι
Category: Creation
New term. First of a fixed four-term set of ranked spiritual powers (1:16), created by and subordinate to Christ; do not treat as interchangeable near-synonyms with the other three.
Dominions
Approved rendering: ממשלות
Transliteration: memshalot
Doctrine: Cosmic Powers Subordinate to Christ
Original: κυριότητες
Category: Creation
New term. Second of the fixed four-term ranked-powers set (1:16).
Authorities Powers
Approved rendering: שלטונות
Transliteration: shiltonot
Doctrine: Cosmic Powers Subordinate to Christ
Original: ἐξουσίαι
Category: Creation
New term. Fourth of the fixed set (1:16, 2:15, disarmed at the cross).
Hold Together
Approved rendering: מתקיים בו
Transliteration: mitkayem bo
Doctrine: Christ Sustains All Creation
Original: συνέστηκεν
Category: Creation
New term. Christ’s ongoing sustaining causality over creation’s coherence (1:17). Proverbs 8:22-31’s personified Wisdom is a strong positive teaching resource, provided the Christological identification is made explicit rather than left as mere personification.
Head
Approved rendering: ראש
Transliteration: rosh
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
New term. Christ’s organic, life-giving, governing headship of the church (1:18). Ordinary Hebrew idiom (rosh ha-am, rosh yeshivah) defaults to administrative/hierarchical chief; must never be taught in isolation from 2:19’s growth-from-the-head imagery.
Body
Approved rendering: גוף
Transliteration: guf
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church
New term. Context-sensitive across at least four distinct technical senses: church-as-body (1:18, 1:24), body of flesh (2:11), the ruling reality of 3:15, and the ‘substance’ sense contrasted with shadow at 2:17 (see substance_reality). Require a sense-tag in translator notes at each occurrence rather than lexical substitution, since Greek itself reuses σῶμα deliberately.
Preeminent
Approved rendering: ראשון בכל
Transliteration: rishon ba-kol
Doctrine: Preeminence and Firstborn from the Dead
Original: πρωτεύων
Category: Christology
New term. Christ’s absolute supremacy ‘in everything’ (1:18), cosmic and redemptive-historical.
Making Peace

Transliteration: oseh shalom
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιήσας
Category: Salvation
New term. The means by which reconciliation is accomplished through the blood of the cross (1:20). Shares the root of, and the dilution-through-ubiquity risk of, the baseline ‘peace’ entry.
Blood
Approved rendering: דם
Transliteration: dam
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: αἷμα
Category: Salvation
New term. Christ’s sacrificial, atoning death (1:20), drawing on the OT sacrificial system.
Hostile Enmity
Approved rendering: אויבים / איבה
Transliteration: oyvim / eivah
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἐχθρούς
Category: Salvation
New term. The readers’ former state of active opposition to God prior to reconciliation (1:21). Positive OT resonance with Genesis 3:15’s אֵיבָה; low doctrinal collision.
Philosophy
Approved rendering: פילוסופיה
Transliteration: filosofya
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: φιλοσοφία
Category: False Teaching
New term, transliterated loanword (fully naturalized in Modern Hebrew secular academic use). The specific local syncretistic teaching system warned against (2:8), not reasoned inquiry generally; the qualifiers ‘empty deceit… human tradition’ do the doctrinal fencing.
Record Of Debt
Approved rendering: שטר חוב
Transliteration: shtar chov
Doctrine: Law, Shadow, and Substance
Original: χειρόγραφον
Category: Salvation
New term. The legal indictment of debt against believers, cancelled and nailed to the cross (2:14). Nearest functional equivalent to the specific ANE handwritten-IOU legal genre; accept with an explanatory note on the Roman/ANE practice of publicly cancelling and displaying a nullified debt document.
False Humility
Approved rendering: סיגופים
Transliteration: sigufim
Doctrine: Warning against Worship of Angels and Elemental Spirits
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη (negative sense)
Category: False Teaching
New term. Performative ascetic self-abasement practiced for spiritual status, condemned in the false teaching (2:18, 2:23). Same Greek root (ταπεινοφροσύνη) as the positive virtue at 3:12, which requires the distinct Hebrew word ענווה (see humility_virtue) - this split must be locked in translation memory, never collapsed to one word for both senses.
Put To Death
Approved rendering: המיתו
Transliteration: hamitu
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: νεκρώσατε
Category: Union with Christ
New term. Decisive, active mortification of earthly sinful practices (3:5); preserve the decisive aspect of the Greek aorist imperative with an equally decisive Hebrew verb form, not a durative/progressive gloss.
Old Self
Approved rendering: האדם הישן
Transliteration: ha-adam ha-yashan
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Union with Christ
New term. The pre-conversion identity, decisively put off (3:9); risk of being read as gradual self-improvement rather than a decisive, completed putting-off.
Kindness
Approved rendering: טוב לב
Transliteration: tuv lev
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Rejected alternatives: חסד (deliberately rejected)
Original: χρηστότης
Category: Sanctification
New term. Benevolent disposition in action, to be put on (3:12). Deliberately NOT rendered with חסד, to preserve that term’s doctrinal reservation for grace and avoid conflating an ethical virtue with the reserved theological term.
Humility Virtue
Approved rendering: ענווה
Transliteration: anavah
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη (positive sense)
Category: Sanctification
New term. Genuine humility as a virtue to be put on (3:12), contrasted with the negative ascetic sense at 2:18/2:23 (see false_humility, סיגופים) - same Greek root, a genuinely different Hebrew word required. Positive OT resonance (Moses, ‘very anav,’ Numbers 12:3).
Masters
Approved rendering: אדונים
Transliteration: adonim
Doctrine: Household Codes: Slaves and Masters
Original: κύριοι
Category: Household
New term. Human household masters, addressed alongside their heavenly Master (3:22, 4:1). Shares its root directly with אָדוֹן, the baseline’s Critical-tier ‘Lord’ rendering; Paul’s own text plays on exactly this ambiguity, preserved naturally in Hebrew, but requires clear number/article disambiguation so the sacred Name’s register is never blurred with ordinary household authority.
Minister Servant
Approved rendering: משרת
Transliteration: mesharet
Doctrine: Gospel Ministry and Mission
Original: διάκονος
Category: Church
New term. A ministry role distinct from apostle or slave, applied to Tychicus, Epaphras, and Archippus (1:7, 1:23, 4:7, 4:17). Must be kept terminologically distinct from both עֶבֶד (slave) and שָׁלִיחַ (apostle).
Knowledge
Approved rendering: דעת
Transliteration: da’at
Doctrine: Knowledge and Wisdom Hidden in Christ
Original: ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Sanctification
New term. Deeper, experiential knowledge of God’s will (1:9-10) and of the mystery of Christ (2:2-3). Echoes Proverbs’ דַּעַת אֱלֹהִים; risk of collapsing into abstract cognitive information rather than relational, experiential knowing.
Mature Complete
Approved rendering: תמים / שלם
Transliteration: tamim / shalem
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Original: τέλειος
Category: Sanctification
New term. Spiritual maturity/completeness in Christ, the goal of Paul’s teaching (1:28) and Epaphras’ prayer (4:12). Moral/spiritual maturity, not sinless perfection; positive resonance with sacrificial ‘without blemish’ (tamim) language.
Holy Blameless Above Reproach
Approved rendering: קדושים ותמימים ובלא דופי
Transliteration: kedoshim u-temimim u-vlo dofi
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Original: ἁγίους καὶ ἀμώμους καὶ ἀνεγκλήτους
Category: Sanctification

Low Risk Terms

Transliteration: bilti nir’eh
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation

Transliteration: erekh apayim
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Original: μακροθυμία

Love
Approved rendering: אהבה
Transliteration: ahavah
Doctrine: Christian Virtue and Community Life
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Sanctification

Doctrine: Knowledge and Wisdom Hidden in Christ
Original: ψαλμοῖς, ὕμνοις, ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς
