Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Jude (English → Hebrew)

Scope Note on Full-Book Coverage

Jude is a single-chapter epistle of 25 verses. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-coverage mandate, “every chapter first to last” for this book means all 25 verses of the one chapter, not merely the core passage. This document therefore:

  1. Treats the core passage, Jude 1:3–23, verse-by-verse (the theological center of the letter: the appeal to contend for the faith, the three-fold OT/extra-biblical warning typology, and the closing exhortation to mercy and endurance).
  2. Treats the remaining verses, Jude 1:1–2 (salutation) and Jude 1:24–25 (doxology), with the same field structure, to complete full-book coverage of the single chapter.
  3. Notes recurring cross-verse theological threads (e.g., τηρέω “kept,” διακρίνω’s dual sense, the ἔλεος/rachamim thread) that bind the whole letter together, since Jude is highly compact and repetitive by design.

All terms already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly and flagged [REUSED — Romans TM]. New terms proposed here are candidates for addition to translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8/9.

PART A — Core Passage: Jude 1:3–23 (Verse-by-Verse)

Jude 1:3

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew RenderingRisk
ἀγαπητοί
agapētoi
”beloved ones”
term of pastoral endearment; marks structural transitions (also vv.17, 20)

σωτηρία
sōtēria
deliverance, rescue
salvation (theological); rescue (general)
salvation
Shared, common salvation of all believers — grounds the urgency of the appealישועה (yeshu’ah) [REUSED — Romans TM, Critical]Critical
ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι
epagōnizesthai
to struggle/contend as in an athletic contest (root: ἀγών, “contest/arena”)
to fight for, strive earnestly, contend
contend earnestly, fight for
The letter’s programmatic verb — believers must actively struggle to defend revealed truth, not merely hold it passivelyלְהֵאָבֵק (lehe’avek — “to wrestle/struggle”)High
ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ
hapax paradotheisē
”having been handed down once [for all]“
a single, completed, authoritative act of transmission
once for all delivered, once entrusted
Anchors the doctrine “Contending for the Faith Once Delivered” — the deposit of apostolic teaching is fixed, not evolvingשֶׁנִּמְסְרָה כְּבָר פַּעַם אַחַת (she-nimsera kvar pa’am achat), root מ־ס־רHigh
πίστις (objective sense)
pistis
”the faith” — here the body of revealed doctrine, not personal trust
(a) subjective trust/reliance; (b) the objective content of what is believed
the faith, the faith once delivered
A distinct sense from Romans’ dominant subjective-trust usage; here πίστις = the fixed deposit of apostolic doctrine to be defendedאֱמוּנָה (emunah) [REUSED — Romans TM], WITH added note distinguishing this objective “deposit of doctrine” sense from the subjective trust senseHigh
ἅγιοι
hagioi
”holy ones”
the whole community of believers
the saints
Recipients of the entrusted faith; corporate, not eliteקְדוֹשִׁים (kedoshim) [REUSED — Romans TM]Medium

Translator note: מ־ס־ר (masar, “to hand down/transmit”) is the very root of the Mishnaic transmission formula “Moshe kibel Torah mi-Sinai u-masrah” (Avot 1:1, “Moses received the Torah from Sinai and handed it down”). Rendering παραδοθείσῃ with this root is a genuine positive asset — it invites the reader to recognize Jude’s claim of a fixed, transmitted deposit of faith as structurally analogous to (and, theologically, in continuity with) the Sinai transmission chain, not a foreign concept. This resonance should be taught explicitly, not left implicit.

Jude 1:4

arnoumenoi

to deny, disavow, renounce
denying
The false teachers’ ultimate act: denial of Christ’s exclusive Master/Lord statusכּוֹפְרִים (kofrim)High

Translator note (Critical attention required): כפירה (kefirah) in Jewish tradition denotes denial of a foundational article of faith (e.g., denying God’s existence or Torah min HaShamayim) and functions as a serious, freighted label for a person, not a neutral description of an act. Using כופרים here is doctrinally apt — Jude is describing exactly this kind of foundational denial — but its weight must be handled deliberately in teaching materials, not introduced casually, given how serious an accusation “being a kofer” is within Jewish religious discourse.

Jude 1:5

apōlesen
destroyed

destroyed
Divine judgment on covenant-people who received grace and then failed to persevere in faith — direct precedent for the letter’s warning to Jude’s readersהִשְׁמִיד (hishmid)High

Textual note for reviewers: A well-known and significant textual variant reads Ἰησοῦς (“Jesus”) instead of [ὁ] κύριος in some early manuscripts, which would render this “Jesus, having saved a people out of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe” — a striking pre-existence/deity-of-Christ claim. The main text above follows the more conservative κύριος reading; flag any base text using the Ἰησοῦς variant for mandatory human theologian review given its direct bearing on the Deity of Christ doctrine.

the eschatological end-period
in the last times, in the last days

”soulish,” natural, unspiritual
merely natural/human as opposed to Spirit-indwelt (cf. 1 Cor 2:14’s ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος)
worldly, unspiritual, merely natural
Anthropological term contrasting natural human life with Spirit-indwelt life; requires care since Hebrew נֶפֶש (nefesh) is a foundational, positively-loaded term (Genesis 2:7’s “living soul”), not inherently negativeנַפְשִׁיִּים (nafshiyim) — meaning must be established by context (contrast with “not having the Spirit”), not assumed from the word aloneHigh
πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες
pneuma mē echontes
”not having [the] Spirit”
lacking the (Holy) Spirit; unregenerate

to waver, be uncertain, be internally divided (SENSE 2 of διακρίνω — distinct from the “dispute/argue” sense in v.9)
those who doubt, those who waver
Context-sensitive term requiring explicit disambiguation: the same root διακρίνω means “to dispute in argument” in v.9 but “to waver/doubt internally” here — a real risk of conflation if rendered identically without contextual notesהַמְפַקְפְּקִים (ha-mefakpekim) — distinct rendering from v.9’s הִתְעַמֵּת to preserve the sense-distinctionHigh

Recurring Cross-Verse Threads (Core Passage)

These threads bind the compact letter together and must be tracked for translation consistency across every occurrence:

  1. τηρέω / φυλάσσω — “kept” (vv.1, 6, 13, 21, 24): the letter’s structural spine — believers “kept” by God’s call (v.1), fallen angels who did NOT “keep” their place (v.6) and are themselves “kept” for judgment (v.13), believers commanded to “keep” themselves in God’s love (v.21), and finally God himself able to “keep”/“guard” believers blameless (v.24). Render consistently with ש־מ־ר throughout.
  2. διακρίνω — dual sense (v.9 “dispute/contend”; v.22 “waver/doubt”): requires two distinct Hebrew renderings with an explicit translator note flagging the shared Greek root but divergent sense, on the model of the baseline’s “called” entry.
  3. ἔλεος / רַחֲמִים — “mercy” (vv.21, 22, 23 ×2): the doctrinal core of “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering,” deliberately distinguished from חֶסֶד (grace/chesed, already reserved for χάρις).
  4. ἀσεβής/ἀσέβεια — “ungodly(ness)” (vv.4, 15 ×2, 18): the letter’s primary label for the false teachers, anchoring the “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” doctrine.
  5. αἰώνιος — “eternal” (v.7 fire; v.21 life): a deliberate positive/negative pairing that should use consistent Hebrew (עוֹלָם) in both directions to preserve the parallel.

PART B — Remaining Verses (Full-Book Coverage Completion): Jude 1:1–2 and 1:24–25

Jude has only one chapter. Full-book coverage of the entire epistle is completed by the salutation (vv.1–2) and closing doxology (vv.24–25), treated here with the same field structure.
