Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Revelation (English → Hebrew)

This glossary extends the baseline Romans translation_memory.json for the Revelation curriculum. Terms marked REUSE must be rendered identically to the baseline entry in all Revelation materials; no deviation is permitted. Terms marked NEW are proposed additions requiring entry into translation memory before Phase 2 processing begins, with version increment and (for Critical/High terms) theologian sign-off per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.

C. Structural Disambiguation Requirements (Translation Memory Enforcement)

The following pairs MUST be kept lexically distinct throughout all Revelation materials, with a standing translator note wherever ambiguity is possible:

PairTerm ATerm BEnforcement Rule
Worship-creatures vs. opponent-beastחיות (ζῷα, chs. 4-5)החיה + qualifier (θηρίον, ch. 13)Never render both with the bare, unqualified singular/plural of the same root without a distinguishing article/qualifier
God’s seal vs. beast’s markחותם (σφραγίς, chs. 5,7)תו (χάραγμα, ch. 13)Never use חותם for the beast’s mark (collides with brit milah’s “chotam kodesh”)
Image of God vs. image of the beastצלם אלוהים (Genesis 1:27, background)צלם החיה (εἰκὼν τοῦ θηρίου, ch. 13)Preserve as deliberate ironic parody; do not soften with a different root that loses the echo
Sheol/Death (defeated, ch. 20) vs. general Sheol elsewhere in Tanakhהשאול (personified, destroyed)שאול (ordinary OT sense)Context and modifiers must make clear Revelation’s personified/destroyed sense is distinct from ordinary usage
Synagogue (real, contemporary institution) vs. “synagogue of Satan”בית כנסתקהלת השטןNever use בית כנסת for the Revelation phrase under any circumstance

This glossary must be merged into translation_memory.json before Phase 2 processing of any Revelation segment. All Critical and High risk NEW terms require theologian sign-off before first use, per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.

Critical Risk Terms

Salvation

Approved rendering: ישועה
Transliteration: yeshu’ah
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: גאולה
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

CRITICAL: shares its root with Yeshua’s own name. Jewish thought defaults yeshu’ah toward corporate/national deliverance. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation’s liturgical acclamations (‘salvation belongs to our God,’ 7:10; 19:1) reinforce the individual, eternal, present sense of this term against the corporate default.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: תחיית המתים
Transliteration: techiyat hametim
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

CRITICAL: Judaism affirms a future general resurrection but expects one unbroken Messianic reign, not a death-and-return pattern. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation 20:4-6 stages a ‘first resurrection’ preceding a later general resurrection and judgment — a novel structural move relative to the unified Rabbinic expectation, requiring explicit teaching at every occurrence.

Lord

Approved rendering: אדון
Transliteration: Adon
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: Adonai is the traditional spoken substitute for the Tetragrammaton. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation intensifies this to the superlative ‘Lord of lords’ (19:16) and the closing invocation ‘Come, Lord Yeshua’ (22:20), which must remain verbatim-consistent with the Romans 10:9 confession across all materials.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: בן האלוהים
Transliteration: ben ha-Elohim
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: Tanakh’s own ‘sons of God’ usage (angelic beings, Israel corporately) never denotes an individual sharing God’s own essence. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation pairs this with the ‘Son of Man’ title (1:13) — together asserting full deity and full humanity as complementary, not competing, categories, and distinct from the individual believer’s sonship of 21:7.

Incarnation

Approved rendering: התגלמות
Transliteration: hitgalmut
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: הגשמה

CRITICAL: no continuous native-Hebrew Christian theological vocabulary exists. Inherited from Romans package. Underlies Revelation’s ‘Word of God’ title (19:13) and John 1:14’s Delitzsch-tradition phrasing, which must inform how this concept is carried through Revelation’s own Christological titles.

Church

Approved rendering: קהילה
Transliteration: kehilah
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: עדה
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

CRITICAL: never עדה, the Torah’s term for the assembled congregation of Israel. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation’s seven congregations (chs. 2-3) are pictured as menorahs (lampstand_menorah) — this imagery must be taught via the grafting-in framework, never as appropriating an Israelite symbol away from Israel.

Law

Approved rendering: תורה
Transliteration: Torah
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy

CRITICAL: Torah is the beloved central gift of covenant relationship, not a burden. Inherited from Romans package. Directly relevant to Revelation’s tree-of-life typology (22:2,14,19; see tree_of_life): Proverbs 3:18 and liturgy already identify Torah itself as ‘עץ חיים’ — Revelation’s tree must be taught as complementary fulfillment, never as Torah’s replacement.

Messiah

Approved rendering: משיח
Transliteration: mashiach
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: Rambam’s Laws of Kings 11-12 expects one unbroken reign. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation’s Key of David (3:7) and Root of David (5:5, 22:16) titles intensify the need to teach the two-comings framework explicitly at every occurrence.

Israel

Approved rendering: ישראל
Transliteration: Yisra’el
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Covenant

CRITICAL: names the reader’s own nation and central ethnic-religious-national identity. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation names Israel explicitly through the sealed 144,000 (ch. 7) and the twelve tribes at the New Jerusalem’s gates (21:12) — must not be read as a merely symbolic cipher for the church without addressing that tension explicitly.

Jesus

Approved rendering: ישוע
Transliteration: Yeshua
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ישו, יהושע (Sacred Name movement variant)
Original: Ἰησοῦς / יֵשׁוּעַ
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: must always be spelled ישוע with the final ayin; never the truncated ישו. Inherited from Romans package, with an added forbidden-substitution extension: fringe ‘Sacred Name’/Hebrew Roots materials circulate ‘Yahushua’/יהושע-style variants, which must also never be used. Zero tolerance given Revelation’s uniquely high concentration of direct divine-identity claims (1:1; 22:16; 22:20).

God

Approved rendering: אלוהים
Transliteration: Elohim
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός / אֱלֹהִים / יהוה
Category: God

CRITICAL: no viable alternative word; risk is entirely in content. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation intensifies the deity question by pairing Almighty/El Shaddai and Alpha-and-Omega language directly with Christ (1:8,17; 21:6; 22:13); Trinitarian implications must be framed as compatible with, not a departure from, the Shema’s absolute divine unity.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: רוח הקודש
Transliteration: Ruach HaKodesh
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον / τὰ ἑπτὰ πνεύματα
Category: God

CRITICAL: mainstream Rabbinic tradition holds the Ruach HaKodesh as an impersonal influence that ‘departed’ after the prophets (Yoma 9b). Inherited from Romans package. Revelation’s ‘seven Spirits’ before God’s throne (1:4; 4:5; 5:6) risks being read as seven separate spirit-entities rather than the fullness/perfection of the one Spirit; teach against both this and the departed-Spirit default.

Lamb

Approved rendering: השה
Transliteration: ha-seh
Doctrine: Worship of the Lamb
Rejected alternatives: כבש
Original: ἀρνίον
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: distinct from כבש (ordinary lamb) to retain the Isaiah 53:7 sacrificial resonance. Used 28 times, uniquely concentrated in Revelation. Must always be taught holding together both the slain (weakness, sacrifice) and worthy/conquering (power, kingship) poles at every occurrence; losing either pole distorts both Worship of the Lamb and Return and Reign of Christ.

Beast

Approved rendering: החיה (+ qualifier)
Transliteration: ha-chayah
Doctrine: The Beast and Antichrist Opposition
Original: θηρίον
Category: Judgment

CRITICAL — single highest structural translation risk in the entire book. Shares its Hebrew root with living_creatures (חיות). Must always appear with a qualifying phrase (‘החיה מן הים,’ ‘החיה מן הארץ’) and a standing translator note at every occurrence. Echoes Daniel 7’s beast-visions.

Mark Of The Beast

Approved rendering: תו החיה
Transliteration: tav ha-chayah
Doctrine: The Beast and Antichrist Opposition
Rejected alternatives: חותם
Original: χάραγμα
Category: Judgment

CRITICAL: deliberately avoids חותם (reserved exclusively for God’s own sealing, see seal_sealing) to prevent collision with the positive covenantal phrase ‘chotam kodesh’ tied to brit milah. תו preserves the Ezekiel 9:4 echo and a clean lexical contrast with God’s seal.

Worship Proskyneo

Approved rendering: להשתחוות
Transliteration: lehishtachavot
Doctrine: Worship of the Lamb
Original: προσκυνέω
Category: Worship

CRITICAL whenever directed at the Lamb (a direct deity claim) or at the beast (idolatry, violating the first commandment); low risk when directed deferentially at humans in non-idolatrous contexts. Requires theologian review at every Christologically significant occurrence.

Word Of God Title

Approved rendering: דבר האלוהים
Transliteration: devar ha-Elohim
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: a personal divine title of the returning Christ (19:13), distinct from ‘word of God’ as Scripture elsewhere. Ties directly to the baseline’s incarnation entry’s citation of John 1:14 (‘והדבר נהיה בשר’); requires theologian review at every occurrence. Never rendered as a created being’s title (see Escalation Rules re: NWT renderings).

King Of Kings Lord Of Lords

Approved rendering: מלך המלכים ואדון האדונים
Transliteration: melekh ha-melachim va-Adon ha-adonim
Doctrine: The Return and Reign of Christ
Original: βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίων
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: builds on the baseline’s lord/Adonai entry intensified to superlative form, echoing Deuteronomy 10:17 and Daniel 2:47 (19:16). Requires theologian review at every occurrence.

Holy City New Jerusalem

Approved rendering: העיר הקדושה / ירושלים החדשה
Transliteration: ha-ir ha-kedoshah / Yerushalayim ha-chadashah
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth
Original: πόλις ἁγία / Ἰερουσαλὴμ καινή
Category: New Creation

CRITICAL: Jerusalem is the reader’s own nation’s holiest city and central identity-marker (21:2, 9-27). Must be taught as a heavenly, descending fulfillment that does not delegitimize or replace hope for the earthly city, but transcends and completes it, paralleling the grafting-in framework for church.

Alpha And Omega

Approved rendering: אלפא ואומגה; הראשון והאחרון
Transliteration: Alfa ve-Omega; ha-rishon ve-ha-acharon
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Aleph-Tav substitution as primary rendering
Original: Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ / ἀρχὴ καὶ τέλος
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: directly echoes YHWH’s own self-designation in Isaiah 44:6/48:12 (1:8,17; 2:8; 21:6; 22:13). Transliterate the Greek letter-names, always paired with the Hebrew phrase ha-rishon ve-ha-acharon, which carries the doctrinal weight. The Aleph-Tav wordplay may be taught as supplementary devotional resonance but must never substitute for the primary rendering. Requires theologian review at every occurrence.

Almighty Pantokrator

Approved rendering: אל שדי
Transliteration: El Shaddai
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: שליט הכל
Original: παντοκράτωρ
Category: God

CRITICAL: the LXX’s own rendering of El Shaddai and YHWH Tzva’ot (1:8; 4:8; 21:22). A literal calque (shalit ha-kol) would be linguistically correct but liturgically inert. Applied to God the Father in immediate proximity to Alpha/Omega language shared with Christ, deliberately blurring referents to reinforce shared deity; requires theologian review wherever so paired.

Synagogue Of Satan

Approved rendering: קהלת השטן
Transliteration: kehillat ha-Satan
Doctrine: The ‘Synagogue of Satan’ Polemic
Rejected alternatives: בית כנסת השטן
Original: συναγωγὴ τοῦ Σατανᾶ
Category: Perseverance

CRITICAL: בית כנסת is the ordinary Modern Hebrew word for an actual synagogue and must NEVER be used here under any circumstance. A literal rendering risks being read as, or weaponized as, a blanket condemnation of Jewish worship rather than critique of a specific first-century hostile faction (2:9; 3:9). Requires theologian review with explicit historical-context framing at every occurrence.

Tree Of Life

Approved rendering: עץ החיים
Transliteration: etz ha-chayim
Doctrine: Tree of Life and Torah Typology
Original: ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς
Category: New Creation

CRITICAL: a major, beloved existing Jewish category — Proverbs 3:18 and traditional liturgy already identify Torah itself as ‘עץ חיים’ (recited when the Torah scroll is returned to the ark). Revelation’s use (22:2,14,19; cf. 2:7) must be taught as a distinct, positive, complementary image of restored Edenic life through Christ, not a claim that Torah is replaced by or identical with this tree.

No Temple

Approved rendering: לא ראיתי מקדש בעיר
Transliteration: lo ra’iti mikdash ba-ir
Doctrine: The Temple and God’s Presence
Original: ναός (absence stated, 21:22)
Category: New Creation

CRITICAL: the New Jerusalem’s lack of a physical temple, because God and the Lamb are themselves its temple (21:22). Directly engages the future-rebuilt-Temple expectation central to much Jewish and some Christian eschatology; must be taught as the Temple’s fulfillment/transcendence, not dismissal, paralleling the law/Torah fulfillment-not-termination framing.

High Risk Terms

Faith

Approved rendering: אמונה
Transliteration: emunah
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ביטחון
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Emunah is generally understood as faithfulness demonstrated through mitzvot observance, praxis-oriented rather than propositional. Must be anchored as trust in the Messiah specifically. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation 2:13, 14:12 (‘those who keep the faith of Yeshua’) and its direct antonym in the vice list of 21:8 (see faithless).

Sanctification

Approved rendering: התקדשות
Transliteration: hitkadshut
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: קידוש

Kiddush is recognized specifically as the Shabbat/holiday wine-blessing ritual; hitkadshut (process-noun) avoids that narrow ritual reading. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to the seven letters’ calls to purity and to the lampstand/menorah imagery of chs. 1-3.

Adoption

Approved rendering: אימוץ
Transliteration: imutz
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: υἱοθεσία (conceptually, cf. υἱός in 21:7)
Category: Salvation

Israel’s sonship is by birth-covenant, not adoption. Inherited from Romans package. Directly relevant to Revelation 21:7’s ‘he will be my son,’ which individualizes this promise at the book’s climax; teach alongside, not replacing, Israel’s corporate covenant sonship.

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: מלכות האלוהים
Transliteration: malchut ha-Elohim
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom

Distinguish from Jewish national/political sovereignty expectations tied to the Land. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation 11:15’s declaration that the kingdoms of this world have become ‘the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ’ is the fullest realization-claim in the corpus and must retain full declarative force.

Sin

Approved rendering: חטא
Transliteration: chet
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability

Correct and well-established (root ח-ט-א). Risk is doctrinal framework, not vocabulary. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to the vice lists of Revelation 21:8 and 22:15, which culminate in exclusion from the New Jerusalem.

Gentiles

Approved rendering: גויים
Transliteration: goyim
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: עמים
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church

Biblically neutral but mildly pejorative in colloquial Modern Hebrew/Yiddish-inflected usage. Inherited from Romans package. Kept lexically distinct from λαοί/עמים (peoples_laoi) as the Greek itself distinguishes the two; relevant to Revelation 21:24,26 where the nations bring their glory into the New Jerusalem alongside the twelve-tribes gate structure.

Covenant

Approved rendering: ברית
Transliteration: brit
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant

Extremely present and specific in Jewish self-understanding, tightly bound to Torah-observance and circumcision. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation 21:3’s covenant formula (‘I will be their God, they will be my people’) is applied at the book’s climax and must be taught as climactic inclusion, not displacement — see people_covenant_formula.

Seed Of David

Approved rendering: זרע דוד
Transliteration: zera David
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant

Resonates with Jeremiah 23:5’s promised righteous Branch. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation prefers ‘Root of David’ (5:5; 22:16, ῥίζα Δαυίδ) over this exact phrase, but the underlying typological framing is identical — see david and messiah entries.

Seal Sealing

Approved rendering: חותם / לחתום
Transliteration: chotam / lachtom
Doctrine: Sealing and Divine Protection
Original: σφραγίζω
Category: Sovereignty

Reserved exclusively for God’s own sealing action (ch. 5 scroll seals; ch. 7 the 144,000). Never used for the beast’s mark (ch. 13, see mark_of_the_beast), to avoid collision with the positive covenantal phrase ‘chotam kodesh’ associated with brit milah and to preserve the deliberate God-vs-beast contrast.

Wrath Of The Lamb

Approved rendering: חרון השה
Transliteration: charon ha-seh
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: ὀργὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου
Category: Judgment

The paradoxical pairing of ‘Lamb’ (sacrificial gentleness) with ‘wrath’ (judicial anger, 6:16) is deliberate and must not be softened toward capricious rage nor understated as mere disappointment.

Great Tribulation

Approved rendering: צרה / הצרה הגדולה
Transliteration: tzarah / ha-tzarah ha-gedolah
Doctrine: Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Perseverance

Positive resonance with Jeremiah 30:7’s ‘Jacob’s trouble’ risks narrowing the term to an exclusively ethnic-Israel referent, when Revelation 7:14 applies it broadly to the suffering church as well; scope must be taught per-passage.

Sealed 144000

Approved rendering: חתומים
Transliteration: chatumim
Doctrine: Israel’s Distinct Role and the Sealed 144,000
Original: σφραγίζω (τῶν 144,000)
Category: Covenant

Directly engages Israel’s ongoing distinct role (7:3-8); must not be read as a merely symbolic cipher for the church in general without addressing that tension explicitly. Contrasts lexically with the beast’s mark (ch. 13).

Trumpets Seven

Approved rendering: שופרות
Transliteration: shofarot
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of God over History
Rejected alternatives: חצוצרות
Original: σάλπιγξ
Category: Judgment

Preferred over chatzotzrot for its Rosh Hashanah Day-of-Judgment/kingship resonance, but must not be reduced merely to a familiar liturgical instrument; the escalating judgment context (chs. 8-9) must be taught explicitly.

Witnesses Two

Approved rendering: עדים
Transliteration: edim
Doctrine: Martyrdom and the Two Witnesses
Original: μάρτυρες
Category: Perseverance

Hebrew ed/edim lacks the Greek martys-family’s built-in ‘witness unto death’ connotation. Must always be paired with context reinforcing that witness may cost life (11:3-12; cf. 2:10, 12:11).

Woman Clothed With Sun

Approved rendering: האישה
Transliteration: ha-ishah
Doctrine: Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation
Original: γυνή
Category: Symbolic Interpretation

An interpretive identity question (Israel, Mary, or the believing community variously proposed, ch. 12) requiring theologian review; must hold open Israel’s central role without foreclosing other legitimate readings. Never resolve this identity inside the translation itself.

Dragon

Approved rendering: תנין
Transliteration: tanin
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: δράκων
Category: Judgment

Existing OT chaos-monster usage (Isaiah 27:1; 51:9; Ezekiel 29:3) is a genuine positive asset, but must not obscure that Revelation identifies this figure personally as Satan (12:9), not merely a symbolic force.

Image Of The Beast

Approved rendering: צלם החיה
Transliteration: tzelem ha-chayah
Doctrine: The Beast and Antichrist Opposition
Original: εἰκὼν τοῦ θηρίου
Category: Judgment

Deliberately echoes ‘צלם אלוהים’ (image of God, Genesis 1:27) as an ironic parody (13:14-15); must be preserved as parody, not softened with a different root that loses the echo.

Number Of The Beast

Approved rendering: מספר החיה
Transliteration: mispar ha-chayah
Doctrine: Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation
Original: ἀριθμὸς αὐτοῦ (666)
Category: Symbolic Interpretation

Hebrew gematria is a well-established, highly developed Jewish interpretive tradition, creating strong temptation toward speculative Hebrew-letter numerological identification of the beast (13:18). Curriculum materials must include an explicit caution against this; the number is a fixed textual datum (Greek-letter-based in its original context), not an invitation to independent Hebrew numerological calculation.

Song Of Moses And Lamb

Approved rendering: שירת משה ושירת השה
Transliteration: shirat Moshe ve-shirat ha-seh
Doctrine: Song of Moses and the Lamb Typology
Original: ᾨδὴ Μωϋσέως καὶ τὴν ᾨδὴν τοῦ ἀρνίου
Category: Sovereignty

Directly names and reuses Exodus 15’s Shirat HaYam (15:3). The exodus-deliverance pattern and the final salvation pattern are explicitly linked; teach this typological continuity plainly rather than letting it pass unremarked.

Armageddon

Approved rendering: הר מגידו
Transliteration: Har Megiddo
Doctrine: Armageddon and Symbolic Geography
Original: Ἁρμαγεδών
Category: Symbolic Interpretation

Names a real, contemporary place within the reader’s own country (16:16), carrying enormous popular eschatological and political-military association. Must be taught distinguishing the text’s symbolic-typological use from speculative real-world military prediction.

Marriage Supper Of The Lamb

Approved rendering: סעודת חתונת השה
Transliteration: se’udat chatunat ha-seh
Doctrine: The Church as Bride of Christ
Original: γάμος τοῦ ἀρνίου
Category: Church

Builds directly on lamb and bride entries (19:6-9); consummation imagery must be handled with dignity and formal register appropriate to the source text’s own restraint.

Millennium

Approved rendering: אלף השנים
Transliteration: elef ha-shanim
Doctrine: Interpretation of the Millennial Reign
Original: χίλια ἔτη
Category: Eschatology

Collides with disputed Rabbinic speculation on the Messianic Age’s length (Sanhedrin 97a) AND with intra-Christian pre/a/postmillennial disagreement (20:2-7). Requires explicit interpretive-framework teaching at every occurrence, not a single assumed reading.

Gog And Magog

Approved rendering: גוג ומגוג
Transliteration: Gog u-Magog
Doctrine: Gog and Magog’s Eschatological Battle
Original: Γὼγ καὶ Μαγώγ
Category: Judgment

Reuses Ezekiel 38-39’s proper names for a distinct, later event (20:8). The double usage across two biblical books at two different eschatological points must be taught explicitly so readers do not conflate the two battles as identical.

Death And Hades

Approved rendering: המוות והשאול
Transliteration: ha-mavet ve-ha-she’ol
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: θάνατος καὶ ᾅδης
Category: Eschatology

Sheol in OT/Jewish thought is generally the shadowy realm of all the dead awaiting resurrection/judgment, not itself an evil entity to be personified and destroyed (20:13-14). This move is distinctly novel and must be explained, never allowed to bleed into ordinary Tanakh Sheol references elsewhere.

Book Of Life

Approved rendering: ספר החיים
Transliteration: sefer ha-chayim
Doctrine: Vindication of the Saints
Original: βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς
Category: Judgment

Collides with the High Holy Day liturgy’s own phrase (‘וכתבנו בספר החיים’), where inscription is annual and renewable. Revelation’s usage (13:8; 17:8; 20:12; 21:27) is a single, eternal, once-for-all register fixed from creation — must be taught explicitly against the annual-renewal default.

Second Death

Approved rendering: המוות השני
Transliteration: ha-mavet ha-sheni
Doctrine: The Second Death and Eternal Judgment
Original: ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος
Category: Judgment

No direct OT precedent; contrasts with Rabbinic Gehinnom, generally taught as temporary/purgative even at its most severe (commonly capped at twelve months, m. Eduyot 2:10 tradition). This eternal-not-temporary distinction (2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8) must be taught explicitly, not assumed.

Lake Of Fire

Approved rendering: אגם האש והגופרית
Transliteration: agam ha-esh ve-ha-gofrit
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: λίμνη τοῦ πυρὸς καὶ θείου
Category: Judgment

Echoes Sodom and Gomorrah’s judgment (Genesis 19:24) and Isaiah 30:33’s Topheth imagery (19:20; 20:10,14-15; 21:8); must be distinguished from Rabbinic Gehinnom as eternal rather than purgative/temporary.

Bride

Approved rendering: כלה
Transliteration: kallah
Doctrine: The Church as Bride of Christ
Original: νύμφη
Category: Church

Already carries deep OT resonance as Israel’s own covenant self-image (Hosea 2; Isaiah 62:5; Jeremiah 2:2) — the risk is not absence but competition. Must be taught through the grafting-in framework, never as supersession of Israel’s own bridal identity (19:7; 21:2,9; 22:17).

Overcomer

Approved rendering: המתגבר / המנצח
Transliteration: ha-mitgaber / ha-menatzeach
Doctrine: Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution
Original: ὁ νικῶν
Category: Perseverance

The seven letters’ refrain (2:7-3:21) and 21:7. Must be taught as sustained faithfulness to the point of death if necessary (cf. 2:10; 12:11), not a single decisive spiritual ‘win’ — real risk of triumphalist, one-time-event misreading if the seven-letters persecution context is not carried forward.

Son Of Man

Approved rendering: בן אדם
Transliteration: ben adam
Doctrine: The Return and Reign of Christ
Original: υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology

Daniel 7:13’s figure is a long-debated identity question in Jewish exegesis (angelic vs. messianic vs. corporate-Israel readings); the direct identification with Jesus (1:13; 14:14) must be taught explicitly against this background, not assumed self-evident.

Lampstand Menorah

Approved rendering: מנורה
Transliteration: menorah
Doctrine: Holiness and Sanctification of the Church
Original: λυχνία
Category: Church

Israel’s own national/religious symbol applied to local congregations (1:12-13,20; chs. 2-3). Genuine positive teaching opportunity but must not read as appropriating a specifically Israelite symbol away from Israel — teach via the same grafting-in principle as church.

Repentance

Approved rendering: תשובה / לשוב
Transliteration: teshuvah / lashuv
Doctrine: Repentance and the Call to Turn
Original: μετάνοια / μετανοέω
Category: Perseverance

A genuine positive asset overlapping richly with Jewish teshuvah, but must be anchored specifically to turning toward Christ, not merely renewed Torah-observance as Judaism’s teshuvah customarily frames it (2:5,16,21-22; 3:3,19).

Key Of David

Approved rendering: מפתח דוד
Transliteration: mafteach David
Doctrine: The Return and Reign of Christ
Original: κλεῖς Δαυίδ
Category: Christology

Echoes Isaiah 22:22’s messianic authority formula (3:7). Ties to the david/messiah entries; the authority-to-open-and-shut imagery must be taught as messianic authority specifically, not generic royal power.

Morning Star

Approved rendering: כוכב השחר
Transliteration: kokhav ha-shachar
Doctrine: The Return and Reign of Christ
Original: ἀστὴρ ὁ πρωϊνός
Category: Christology

Christ’s self-designation fulfilling Numbers 24:17’s messianic star prophecy (22:16; cf. 2:28). Must not be confused with ‘the day star, son of the dawn’ (הילל בן שחר, Isaiah 14:12) applied in later Christian tradition to Satan’s fall — an internal-to-Christian-tradition collision requiring an explicit translator’s note at every occurrence.

Faithless

Approved rendering: חסרי אמונה
Transliteration: chasrei emunah
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: ἄπιστος
Category: Judgment

The direct antonym of the baseline’s faith/emunah entry, inheriting its High risk tier. Named first in the vice list of 21:8, ahead of murderers and sorcerers — a deliberate, load-bearing placement making explicit that the list’s organizing principle is unbelief, not merely bad behavior.

Medium Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: הבשורה
Transliteration: ha-besorah
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: חדשות טובות

Besorah is generic Hebrew for ‘good news’ of any kind. Must be qualified as the specific proclamation of salvation through the Messiah. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation 14:6’s ‘eternal gospel’ (בשורת עולם) proclaimed to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people — the qualifier ‘eternal’ should be retained to distinguish this from any this-worldly announcement.

Grace

Approved rendering: חסד
Transliteration: chesed
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: חן
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Chen has drifted toward ‘charm/cuteness’ in Modern Hebrew. Chesed carries fuller OT covenant-loyalty sense but must be sharpened for favor apart from Torah observance. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation 21:6’s water of life given ‘without payment’ (חנם) — echo Isaiah 55:1 for maximal resonance and teach grace apart from merit at the book’s climax.

Apostle

Approved rendering: שליח
Transliteration: shaliach
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church

Shlichut captures delegated authority well; must be distinguished from the everyday Jewish Agency emissary sense. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation 21:14, where the twelve apostles are named on the New Jerusalem’s foundations alongside the twelve tribes of Israel.

Holy

Approved rendering: קדוש
Transliteration: kadosh
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification

Deeply shared vocabulary (Kadosh Baruch Hu). Risk is scope: NT holiness is Spirit-wrought, not reducible to ritual observance. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation 4:8’s ‘Holy, holy, holy’ is a direct, exact quotation of Isaiah 6:3’s Masoretic wording and must never be paraphrased.

Saints

Approved rendering: קדושים
Transliteration: kedoshim
Doctrine: Sainthood
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

Echoes Leviticus 19’s Kedoshim portion; must not imply a Torah-observant elite. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation’s persecuted saints whose prayers and blood cry for justice (6:9-11; 18:24) must be taught as answered justice, not personal vengeance.

Peace

Approved rendering: שלום
Transliteration: shalom
Doctrine: Peace with God

Rich OT resource, but risk of dilution through everyday-greeting ubiquity. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation 1:4’s opening greeting (‘grace and peace to you’), directly parallel to Pauline epistolary openings.

Glory

Approved rendering: כבוד
Transliteration: kavod
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God

Strong existing resource (the kavod YHWH filling the Tabernacle/Temple). Must retain weighty manifest-presence sense over colloquial ‘kol hakavod.’ Inherited from Romans package. Revelation 21:23-26’s intensified light-imagery makes this presence-sense the New Jerusalem’s very light source, replacing sun and moon.

Power Of God

Approved rendering: כוח האלוהים
Transliteration: koach ha-Elohim
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: גבורת האל

Gevurah is a Kabbalistic sefirah; koach is the plain, non-mystical term and is preferred throughout. Inherited from Romans package. This forbidden-substitution rule applies book-wide in Revelation wherever God’s or the Lamb’s power is discussed.

Prophet

Approved rendering: נביא
Transliteration: navi
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: προφήτης
Category: Covenant

Deuteronomy 18:15’s ‘prophet like Moses’ is a long-disputed messianic prooftext. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation’s two witnesses (11:3-12) and the false prophet’s counterfeit (13:11), both of which use this category — see witnesses_two and false_prophet.

Providence

Approved rendering: השגחה פרטית
Transliteration: hashgachah pratit
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: השגחה

Bare hashgachah is most commonly encountered as kosher supervision certification. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation’s overarching Sovereignty of God over History doctrine, especially the throne-room visions (chs. 4-5) and the sealed scroll.

David

Approved rendering: דוד
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant

Beloved and entirely shared figure. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation applies both ‘Root of David’ and ‘Key of David’ titles to Christ (3:7; 5:5; 22:16); the typological link must be argued, not assumed, per the baseline’s davidic_covenant doctrine.

Father

Approved rendering: אבינו
Transliteration: Avinu
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Avinu Malkeinu is a cherished High Holy Day liturgical address, corporate in scope. Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation 21:7’s ‘I will be his God, and he will be my son,’ the book’s own capstone statement of individualized sonship.

Revelation Apocalypse

Approved rendering: התגלות
Transliteration: hitgalut
Doctrine: Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation
Original: ἀποκάλυψις
Category: Symbolic Interpretation

The book’s own self-designation (1:1). Must not be taught as generic Kabbalistic mystical-disclosure experience; anchor firmly to apostolic, Christ-centered prophecy. Recommended standing Hebrew book title for this curriculum: התגלות / התגלות יוחנן.

Throne

Approved rendering: כיסא
Transliteration: kisse
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of God over History
Original: θρόνος
Category: Sovereignty

Must be distinguished with modifiers (כיסא האלוהים, כיסא השה) from the beast’s counterfeit throne (13:2; 16:10) so the true-versus-usurped-authority contrast is preserved.

Living Creatures

Approved rendering: חיות
Transliteration: chayot
Doctrine: Worship of the Lamb
Original: ζῷα
Category: Worship

STRUCTURAL DISAMBIGUATION (highest priority in the book): shares its Hebrew root with ‘beast’ (see beast). Translation memory enforces חיות exclusively for the four worship-leading creatures of chs. 4-5, combining Ezekiel 1’s chayot and Isaiah 6’s seraphim, and never for the beast. A standing translator note is required at every occurrence of either term.

Elders 24

Approved rendering: זקנים
Transliteration: zekenim
Doctrine: Worship of the Lamb
Original: πρεσβύτεροι
Category: Worship

Must be read in a heavenly-worship-assembly sense rather than importing a specifically judicial/legislative Sanhedrin connotation from ordinary Hebrew usage.

Scroll Sealed

Approved rendering: ספר
Transliteration: sefer
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of God over History
Rejected alternatives: מגילה
Original: βιβλίον / σφραγίς
Category: Sovereignty

Prefer ספר over מגילה for the sealed scroll of ch. 5, to avoid the specific Purim/Esther festal association ‘megillah’ carries in ordinary Israeli usage.

Incense Prayers Of Saints

Approved rendering: קטורת
Transliteration: ketoret
Doctrine: The Temple and God’s Presence
Original: θυμίαμα
Category: Worship

The prayers of God’s people pictured as an accepted Temple incense-offering rising to God (8:3-4); strong positive Temple continuity, must not imply an ongoing literal incense-offering requirement, but a spiritualized fulfillment.

Abyss

Approved rendering: התהום
Transliteration: ha-tehom
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of God over History
Original: ἄβυσσος
Category: Judgment

Echoes Genesis 1:2’s tehom; a place of imprisonment for demonic forces under God’s sovereign control (9:1; 20:1). Must specify the imprisonment-of-evil-forces sense in context.

Abaddon

Approved rendering: אבדון
Transliteration: Avaddon
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: Ἀβαδδών
Category: Judgment

Already native Hebrew (Job 26:6; 28:22), directly supplied by the text itself (9:11). Low linguistic risk but high doctrinal weight as a personal destroying power; should not be softened into an abstraction. The Greek gloss ‘Apollyon’ (Destroyer) should be rendered as an explanatory footnote (המשחית), not a second proper name in the running text.

Mystery Of God

Approved rendering: רז
Transliteration: raz
Doctrine: Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation
Rejected alternatives: סוד
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Symbolic Interpretation

Preferred over sod specifically to avoid importing the Kabbalistic PaRDeS mystical-layer scheme; raz keeps the Danielic, prophetic-apocalyptic register (10:7).

Accuser

Approved rendering: המקטרג
Transliteration: ha-mekatreg
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: ὁ κατήγορος
Category: Assurance

Existing Rabbinic category for Satan’s heavenly-prosecutor role — a genuine positive asset — but must be connected to the specific victory ‘by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony’ (12:11), taught as final and complete, not the ongoing prosecutorial role Satan retains in some Rabbinic frameworks.

False Prophet

Approved rendering: נביא שקר
Transliteration: navi sheker
Doctrine: The Beast and Antichrist Opposition
Original: ψευδοπροφήτης
Category: Judgment

Built on baseline navi; an existing OT category (Deuteronomy 13, 18; Jeremiah 23) with low collision risk. The beast’s second ally who performs deceptive signs (13:11-15; 16:13; 19:20; 20:10).

Harvest Winepress

Approved rendering: קציר / גת
Transliteration: katzir / gat
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: θερισμός / ληνός
Category: Judgment

Strong positive OT resonance (Isaiah 63:2-3); must retain the judicial-wrath sense rather than a purely agrarian one (14:14-20).

Babylon Harlot

Approved rendering: הזונה הגדולה / בבל
Transliteration: ha-zonah ha-gedolah / Bavel
Doctrine: Babylon and Idolatrous World Systems
Original: πόρνη / Βαβυλών
Category: Judgment

Babylon as archetypal enemy of Jewish memory (destroyer of the First Temple) is a genuine positive existing category. Chief risk is maintaining prophetic-judgment register and clarifying the symbolic, not literal-modern-Iraq, referent (chs. 17-18).

Peoples Laoi

Approved rendering: עמים
Transliteration: amim
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in the New Jerusalem
Original: λαοί
Category: Church

‘Peoples’ distinguished from ἔθνη (‘nations,’ see gentiles). Must be kept lexically distinct from גויים, as the Greek itself distinguishes the two terms (17:15).

Great White Throne

Approved rendering: הכיסא הלבן הגדול
Transliteration: ha-kisse ha-lavan ha-gadol
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: θρόνος λευκὸς μέγας
Category: Judgment

The final judgment-seat scene (20:11-15); ties to Judgment-of-the-Wicked and Vindication-of-the-Saints doctrines.

New Heaven And New Earth

Approved rendering: שמים חדשים וארץ חדשה
Transliteration: shamayim chadashim va-aretz chadashah
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth
Original: καινὸς οὐρανὸς καὶ καινὴ γῆ
Category: New Creation

Direct quotation of Isaiah 65:17/66:22’s own wording (21:1). Hebrew חדש does not lexically distinguish kainos (renewed) from neos (new-in-time) as Greek does; the renewal-not-annihilation nuance must be carried by teaching, not word choice alone.

Sea No More

Approved rendering: הים
Transliteration: ha-yam
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth
Original: θάλασσα (οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι)
Category: New Creation

The sea’s final disappearance (21:1) symbolizes the removal of chaos and the beast’s origin-point. Must be taught with its symbolic chaos-resonance (chs. 12-13’s dragon/beast-from-sea imagery), not as a strange geographical detail.

Dwelling Place Tabernacle

Approved rendering: משכן / לשכון
Transliteration: mishkan / lishkon
Doctrine: The Temple and God’s Presence
Original: σκηνή / σκηνώσει
Category: New Creation

Shares root ש-כ-ן with שכינה (Shechinah) — the strongest positive Hebrew asset in the core passage (21:3). Connect explicitly to the incarnation entry; risk is under-teaching, not mistranslating.

People Covenant Formula

Approved rendering: עם
Transliteration: am
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles in the New Jerusalem
Original: λαός
Category: Covenant

Am and am HaShem are default self-references for the Jewish people specifically. Revelation 21:3’s universal scope must be taught as the covenant formula’s climactic inclusive fulfillment, never displacement.

Death Personified End

Approved rendering: מוות
Transliteration: mavet
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth
Original: θάνατος
Category: Eschatology

Death’s final abolition as a personified end-time enemy (21:4; cf. 20:14). Must connect to the resurrection entry so readers see this as resurrection’s endpoint, not a separate promise.

Making All Things New

Approved rendering: מחדש הכל
Transliteration: mechadesh ha-kol
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth
Original: καινός (ποιῶ πάντα καινά)
Category: New Creation

Same kainos/neos nuance issue as new_heaven_and_new_earth (21:5); Hebrew חדש alone does not carry the renewal-vs-novelty distinction.

Water Of Life

Approved rendering: מעין מי החיים
Transliteration: ma’yan mei ha-chayim
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: ὕδωρ/ὕδατος ζωῆς
Category: Assurance

Echoes Isaiah 55:1’s free invitation (‘chinam’) at 21:6; 22:1,17. Should be taught alongside river_of_life and the grace entry.

Heritage Inherit

Approved rendering: ירש / נחלה
Transliteration: yirash / nachalah
Doctrine: Sonship and Inheritance
Original: κληρονομέω
Category: Assurance

Nachalah is itself the OT’s own term for Israel’s inherited Land (Deuteronomy 4:21). Must be taught as this promise’s ultimate eschatological horizon (21:7), not a competing claim to the territorial nachalah.

Sorcerers Idolaters

Approved rendering: מכשפים / עובדי אלילים
Transliteration: mechashfim / ovdei elilim
Doctrine: Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Original: φαρμακοῖς / εἰδωλολάτραις
Category: Judgment

Strong existing Torah vocabulary (Deuteronomy 18:10-12; the Decalogue) — continuity with familiar covenant violations now applied at final judgment (21:8; 22:15); low collision risk.

Keys Of Death And Hades

Approved rendering: מפתחות המוות והשאול
Transliteration: mafte’chot ha-mavet ve-ha-she’ol
Doctrine: The Return and Reign of Christ
Original: κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾅδου
Category: Christology

Christ’s authority over death and the grave, granted through his resurrection (1:18). Ties directly to the resurrection entry and ch. 20’s Death-and-Hades personification.

River Of Life

Approved rendering: נהר מים חיים
Transliteration: nehar mayim chayim
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth
Original: ποταμὸς ὕδατος ζωῆς
Category: New Creation

The life-giving river flowing from God’s throne (22:1), echoing Ezekiel 47’s Temple river. Strong positive OT resonance.

No More Curse

Approved rendering: קללה
Transliteration: klalah
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth

Low Risk Terms

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: הודיה

Strong positive overlap with Jewish liturgy (the Hallel psalms). Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Revelation’s doxological refrains (4:9; 7:12; 11:17).

Prophecy

Approved rendering: נבואה

Shares root with navi; low independent risk. Inherited from Romans package. Revelation’s own self-designation as prophecy (1:3; 22:18-19) sits entirely outside the Jewish canon and must be anchored to apostolic, Christ-centered prophecy, not a generic mystical-disclosure reading (see revelation_apocalypse).

Original: ἄξιος

Transliteration: evel / ze’akah / ke’ev
Doctrine: The New Heaven and New Earth
Original: πένθος / κραυγή / πόνος
Category: New Creation

Direct, non-technical Biblical Hebrew vocabulary (21:4); teach alongside no_more_curse (22:3) as the Genesis-3-reversal set.

Trustworthy And True

Approved rendering: נאמנים ואמיתיים
Transliteration: ne’emanim ve-amitiyim
Doctrine: Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Original: πιστός καὶ ἀληθινός

Shares root א-מ-ן with the baseline’s אמונה/אמן word-family (21:5) — a genuine positive asset worth teaching explicitly.
