Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Ephesians 1–6 (English → Hebrew)

Scope and Method

This analysis extends the Romans Language Package to the Ephesians curriculum. Every term already recorded in translation_memory.json (from Romans) must be reused exactly — it is not re-derived here, only cross-referenced. Only terms new to Ephesians, or Romans terms appearing in a materially new theological configuration, receive full new-term treatment. The core passage (Ephesians 2:1-10) receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter (1, 2:11-22, 3, 4, 5, 6) receives full chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing terms. No chapter is silently skipped.

Baseline terms reused without modification in this document: grace (חסד), faith (אמונה), salvation (ישועה), gospel (הבשורה), church (קהילה), gentiles (גויים), holy (קדוש), saints (קדושים), sanctification (התקדשות), glory (כבוד), peace (שלום), called/calling (קרוא/קריאה), election (בחירה), adoption (אימוץ), sin (חטא), righteousness (צדק), law (תורה), covenant (ברית), god (אלוהים), holy spirit (רוח הקודש), jesus (ישוע), messiah (משיח), lord (אדון), father (אבינו), resurrection (תחיית המתים), spiritual gifts (מתנות רוחניות), fellowship (שותפות), power of God (כוח האלוהים), providence (השגחה פרטית), thanksgiving (הודיה), exhort (לעודד), apostle (שליח), prophet (נביא), israel (ישראל), son of God (בן האלוהים).

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: EPHESIANS 2:1-10 (Verse by Verse)

Ephesians 2:1 — “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
dead
νεκρούς
nekrous
corpse-like, lifeless
physical death; metaphorical spiritual deadness
”dead,” “deadness”
Total spiritual incapacity apart from Christ — not merely sick or weakened, but without life toward God. Sets up the “made alive” (v.5) contrast.Critical. Proposed: מֵתִים (metim). Mainstream Jewish anthropology (yetzer hatov/yetzer hara in real tension, genuine capacity to choose good, Deut 30:19 “choose life”) does not default to total spiritual deadness prior to any divine act. This is a sharper claim than Romans 5’s federal-headship argument and must be flagged for theologian review every occurrence.
trespasses
παραπτώμασιν
paraptōmasin
a false step, a fall aside
willful deviation, transgression
”trespasses,” “transgressions”
Active, culpable wrongdoing, paired with sins for rhetorical fullness.Medium. Proposed: פְּשָׁעִים (pesha’im) — strong OT term for rebellion (cf. Isaiah 53:5). Paired with חטא (sin, already in TM) as פשעים וחטאים.
sins
ἁμαρτίαις
hamartiais
missing the mark
see baseline “sin” entry
”sins”
Same doctrine as Romans’ universal_human_accountability.Reuse TM: חטא/חטאים. No new risk beyond baseline High rating.

Ephesians 2:2 — “in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
walked
περιεπατήσατε
periepatēsate
to walk about
conduct one’s life, live in a manner
”walked,” “lived,” “conducted yourselves”
The ethical-lifestyle sense that becomes a signature Ephesians motif (see ch. 4-5, doctrine “Walking in Newness of Life”).Medium. Proposed: הִתְהַלֵּכְתֶּם (hithalechtem) — echoes Genesis 17:1 “walk before me,” Enoch “walked with God” (Gen 5:24). Positive OT resonance; risk is under-registering the ethical weight since hit’halech can sound merely literal in casual use.
course/age of this world
αἰῶνα τοῦ κόσμου τούτου
aiōna tou kosmou toutou
the age of this world
present temporal-spiritual order dominated by rebellion
”the ways of this world,” “the present age”
Not neutral chronology — a morally corrupted spiritual system under a hostile ruler.High. Proposed: עוֹלָם הַזֶּה (ha-olam ha-zeh). Existing Rabbinic category (olam ha-zeh vs. olam ha-ba) is an asset, but risk is flattening Paul’s point about an actively hostile ruling power into a neutral temporal category.
prince of the power of the air
ἄρχοντα τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ ἀέρος
archonta tēs exousias tou aeros
ruler of the authority of the air
Satan as a cosmic ruling authority
”the prince of the power of the air,” “the ruler of this world’s air”
Identifies Satan (see 6:11-12) as presently exercising real, God-permitted but temporary dominion over unregenerate humanity.High. Proposed: שַׂר כֹּחַ הָאֲוִיר (sar koach ha-avir). שַׂר (“prince/celestial ruler”) is a genuine Jewish angelological category (Daniel’s national sarim); applying it to Satan specifically must be unambiguous, since the term alone could read as a neutral angelic office. Cross-reference with ch.6 spiritual warfare vocabulary.
sons of disobedience
υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας
huious tēs apeitheias
sons of non-persuasion/rebellion
idiom: those characterized by disobedience
”sons of disobedience,” “the disobedient”
Hebraic idiom (benei + abstract noun), should translate naturally.Low-Medium. Proposed: בְּנֵי הַמֶּרִי (benei ha-meri) — “meri” is a genuine OT rebellion term (Num 20:24).

Ephesians 2:3 — “…among whom we all once lived… and were by nature children of wrath”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
flesh / desires
σαρκός… ἐπιθυμίας
sarkos… epithymias
flesh, fleshly cravings
disordered appetite, self-oriented desire
”flesh,” “desires,” “cravings”
The unregenerate self’s default orientation.Medium. Standard: בָּשָׂר (basar) / תַּאֲווֹת (ta’avot) — established vocabulary, low independent collision.
by nature
φύσει
physei
by birth-condition, inherently
inborn/essential characteristic vs. acquired one
”by nature,” “by birth,” “naturally”
Claims an inherited, not merely chosen or acquired, condition of guilt.High. Proposed: מִטִּבְעֵנוּ (mi-tiv’einu). This is the sharpest single phrase in the passage for a Jewish reader: it asserts an inherited condition prior to any individual act, directly against the mainstream view that moral condition is a matter of ongoing choice between yetzer hatov and yetzer hara, not an inborn verdict. Flag for theologian review every occurrence, alongside Romans 5:12-19 material already in the doctrine registry.
children of wrath
τέκνα ὀργῆς
tekna orgēs
children characterized by wrath
idiom: objects/heirs of divine wrath
”children of wrath,” “deserving of wrath”
Not merely “angry people” but those under God’s righteous judicial anger prior to grace.High. Proposed: בְּנֵי חֲרוֹן אַף (benei charon af). חֲרוֹן אַף is a strong, authentic OT phrase for God’s kindled anger (Exodus 32:12, Deut 9:19) — an asset for weight, but must be clearly read as God’s holy judicial response, not capricious rage, and must be held together with v.4’s “but God” pivot.

Ephesians 2:4 — “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
mercy
ἔλεος
eleos
compassion, pity
covenant compassion toward the undeserving
”mercy,” “compassion”
The ground of the reversal that follows; echoes God’s self-revealed character.Low. Proposed: רַחֲמִים (rachamim) — root ר-ח-ם (womb), one of God’s core revealed attributes (Exodus 34:6). Strong positive resonance, minimal risk.
loved
ἠγάπησεν
ēgapēsen
loved (self-giving)
committed, self-giving love, not mere affection
”loved”
God’s initiating love precedes and causes the rescue described in vv.5-6.Low. Standard: אָהַב (ahav) / אַהֲבָה (ahavah). No independent collision.

Ephesians 2:5 — “even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
made alive together (with Christ)
συνεζωοποίησεν
synezōopoiēsen
co-made-alive
union with Christ’s own life-giving/resurrection
”made us alive together with,” “quickened together with”
A believer’s spiritual co-resurrection with Christ, positionally accomplished now (cf. Romans 6:4-5, already Critical in baseline for Christ’s own resurrection).Critical. Proposed: הֶחְיָה אוֹתָנוּ יַחַד עִם הַמָּשִׁיחַ (hechyah otanu yachad im ha-Mashiach). Must not be confused with the future bodily resurrection (Romans 8, already covered) — this is present spiritual union. Reuse תחיית המתים root (ח-י-ה) but do not use the identical compound noun, to avoid implying the future bodily resurrection has already fully occurred.
grace… saved
χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι
chariti este sesōsmenoi
you are/have been saved by grace
perfect-tense: completed action, present abiding result
”you have been saved,” “you are saved”
THE thesis statement anticipating v.8. Must render both grace and salvation using the exact baseline TM terms, and preserve the completed-with-lasting-effect force despite Hebrew’s more limited perfect-tense marking.Critical. Reuse TM exactly: חֶסֶד (grace) and יְשׁוּעָה (salvation), e.g. בַּחֶסֶד נוֹשַׁעְתֶּם. Per baseline consistency rules, this clause type must render identically wherever it recurs in Ephesians.

Ephesians 2:6 — “and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
raised up with
συνήγειρεν
synēgeiren
co-raised
union with Christ’s resurrection, positional
”raised us up with him”
Parallel to v.5’s “made alive together”; positional/spiritual, not yet bodily.Critical. Same handling as v.5’s made-alive-together term; keep distinct from תחיית המתים proper.
seated with him
συνεκάθισεν
synekathisen
co-seated
shared enthronement/authority status
”seated us with him”
Believers share, positionally, in Christ’s exalted authority — a striking, easily under-taught claim.High. Proposed: הוֹשִׁיבָנוּ עִמּוֹ (hoshivanu imo).
heavenly places
ἐπουρανίοις
epouraniois
the heavenly [realms]
Ephesians’ signature spatial term for the unseen spiritual realm of authority and conflict (1:3,20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12)
“heavenly places,” “the heavenlies”
Not simply “heaven” as final destination, but the present unseen realm where Christ’s authority and cosmic conflict (ch.6) both operate.High. Proposed: בַּמְּרוֹמִים (ba-meromim) — poetic OT term for the heights where God dwells (Job 25:2, Isaiah 33:5). This is a new signature term requiring one consistent rendering throughout Ephesians (see glossary). Risk: possible over-literalization into a spatial/cosmological claim (echoing Talmudic seven-heavens speculation, Chagigah 12b) rather than Paul’s meaning of present spiritual status and authority.

Ephesians 2:7 — “so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
riches (of grace)
πλοῦτος
ploutos
wealth, abundance
lavish, superabundant sufficiency
”riches,” “wealth”
Modifies grace (חסד, TM term) — the abundance is the point, not a new doctrine.Low-Medium. Proposed: עֹשֶׁר (osher) — עֹשֶׁר חַסְדּוֹ (the riches of his grace).
kindness
χρηστότης
chrēstotēs
goodness, benevolence
God’s disposition of favor
”kindness”
Reinforces the unmerited character of grace.Low. Proposed: טוּב (tuv) / נְדִיבוּת (nedivut).

Ephesians 2:8 — “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
grace / saved / faith
χάριτι… σεσωσμένοι… διὰ πίστεως
chariti… sesōsmenoi… dia pisteōs
by grace… having been saved… through faith
the Reformation-anchor formula
”by grace… saved… through faith”
THE thesis verse of the “Salvation by Grace through Faith” doctrine; must be verbatim-consistent every time it is cited across Ephesians curriculum documents, exactly as Romans 1:16-17 and 10:9-10 are locked in the baseline.Critical. Lock this exact clause for consistency across all Ephesians lesson documents.
not your own doing
οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν
ouk ex hymōn
not from you
source-denial: salvation does not originate in the person
”not your own doing,” “not from yourselves”
Denies human origination of salvation, without yet denying the value of works (that comes in v.10).Medium. Standard Hebrew negation construction; no independent term risk, but must be translated so the negation clearly modifies “source” not “value.”
gift
δῶρον
dōron
a gift, present
a freely given, unearned bestowal
”gift,” “present”
Distinct sense from “spiritual gifts” (χαρίσματα/matanot ruchaniyot, already in TM) — here it is the gift of salvation itself.Medium. Proposed: מַתְּנַת הָאֱלֹהִים (matnat ha-Elohim). Do not require the “ruchaniyot” (spiritual) qualifier used for spiritual_gifts — different referent, would create false equivalence if conflated.

Ephesians 2:9 — “not a result of works, so that no one may boast”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
works
ἔργων
ergōn
deeds, actions
human effort/achievement as a basis for standing
”works,” “deeds”
Excluded specifically as the BASIS of salvation (contrast with v.10, where good works are its RESULT). This is the sharpest NT statement of the grace/works distinction and must be handled with the same care as Romans 4:4-5 and 11:5-6.Critical. Proposed: מַעֲשִׂים (ma’asim). מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים (good deeds/mitzvot) is a deeply positive Jewish category; “not of works” (לא מִמַּעֲשִׂים) must be explicitly taught as excluding works-as-ground, not devaluing the entire mitzvot-observant ethical life, echoing baseline’s grace-doctrine framing that this is not an attack on Torah itself.
boast
καυχήσηται
kauchēsētai
to boast, glory in
self-exaltation based on one’s own achievement
”boast,” “take credit”
The purpose-clause: grace excludes self-glorification specifically.Low-Medium. Proposed: יִתְהַלֵּל (yit’halel) — root ה-ל-ל (praise), an ironic contrast: boasting-in-self vs. praising-God (cf. Jeremiah 9:23-24, a natural cross-reference).

Ephesians 2:10 — “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningHebrew Rendering Risk
workmanship
ποίημα
poiēma
that which is made, a work of art
a crafted product; only other NT use is Romans 1:20 (creation)
“workmanship,” “handiwork,” “creation”
Reverses vv.8-9: works are excluded as ground, but the believer is God’s own product recreated FOR good works.Medium. Proposed: יְצִירָתוֹ (yetzirato, “his handiwork/creation”). Note: root י-צ-ר also underlies יֵצֶר (yetzer, “inclination,” as in yetzer hatov/yetzer hara) — a potentially fruitful, not merely risky, teaching resonance: believers are a new “yetzirah” whose fruit is good, in implicit contrast to the yetzer hara.
created
κτισθέντες
ktisthentes
having been created
divine creative act, echoes Genesis
”created,” “made”
New-creation theology (cf. 2 Cor 5:17, not in Romans TM but consistent doctrine).Low. Proposed: נִבְרָאנוּ (nivra’nu) — direct root-link to בְּרֵאשִׁית/בְּרִיאָה (Genesis creation). Strong positive resonance.
good works
ἔργοις ἀγαθοῖς
ergois agathois
good deeds
the proper FRUIT (not root) of salvation
”good works,” “good deeds”
Resolves the works-tension of vv.8-9: works are excluded as basis, restored as purpose.High. Proposed: מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים (ma’asim tovim) — deliberately reuses the ordinary Jewish ethical term for good deeds/mitzvot-adjacent conduct, since Paul’s own point is continuity of ethical expectation, discontinuity only of the ground of standing. Must be taught together with v.9 as a single unit, not in isolation.
prepared beforehand
προητοίμασεν
proētoimasen
prepared in advance
sovereign, prior divine planning
”prepared beforehand,” “planned in advance”
Ties good works into the same sovereign-planning register as election/predestination in ch.1.Medium-High. Proposed: הֵכִין מֵרֹאשׁ (hechin me-rosh). Connects to the predestination vocabulary of Ephesians 1 (see below) — cross-reference required.
walk
περιπατήσωμεν
peripatēsōmen
walk about
conduct of life (same root as 2:2 and the ch.4-5 ethical motif)
“walk in them,” “live them out”
Closes the passage’s circle: from a “walk” of death (v.2) to a “walk” of good works (v.10) — a deliberate literary inclusio.Medium. Reuse הִתְהַלֵּךְ (hit’halech) established in v.2 for consistency; flag the inclusio for translators/teachers so it is not lost.

PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER ANALYSIS OF THE WHOLE BOOK

Chapter 1 (Ephesians 1:1-23)

TermsVariantsTheological MeaningHebrew Rendering & Risk
blessed / blessing
εὐλογητός / εὐλογία
eulogētos / eulogia
well-spoken-of; benefit bestowed
”blessed,” “blessing”God as source of every spiritual benefit “in the heavenly places” (see 2:6 entry).Low. Standard: בָּרוּךְ / בְּרָכָה (baruch/berachah) — deeply established liturgical vocabulary (Baruch Hashem). Minimal risk.
chose / election
ἐξελέξατο
exelexato
selected out
”chose,” “elected”God’s sovereign choice “before the foundation of the world” (1:4).Reuse TM: בְּחִירָה/בָּחַר. Same High risk profile as baseline election entry, now sharpened by explicit pre-creation timing — flag for theologian review.
predestined
προορίσας
proorisas
determined/marked out beforehand
”predestined,” “foreordained”Sovereign prior determination of adoption, distinct from (though related to) election.High. Proposed: יִעֵד/יִעוּד מֵרֹאשׁ (ye’ud me-rosh, “designation beforehand”). Directly collides with the strong Jewish emphasis on moral free will (Pirkei Avot 3:15, “all is foreseen, yet freedom of choice is given”; Rambam, Hilchot Teshuvah 5). Must be taught as compatible with human responsibility (as Ephesians itself immediately moves to ethical exhortation), not as fatalism.
redemption
ἀπολύτρωσις
apolytrōsis
ransoming, buying back
”redemption”Deliverance secured through Christ’s blood (1:7).High. Proposed: גְּאוּלָה (ge’ulah) — the baseline explicitly reserved this word (kept distinct from ישועה) for exactly this purpose. Risk: ge’ulah carries strong national/messianic-age connotations in Jewish thought (redemption of Israel from exile); must be taught as already accomplished in Christ’s blood for individuals, without erasing its future corporate/cosmic dimension (Rom 8, already covered).
forgiveness
ἄφεσις
aphesis
release, remission
”forgiveness”Forgiveness of trespasses “according to the riches of his grace.”Medium. Proposed: סְלִיחָה (selichah) — resonates with the Selichot liturgy of the Days of Awe. Risk: liturgical selichah is tied to a process of repentance/prayer/charity around Yom Kippur; must clarify basis is Christ’s blood, not the annual atonement cycle.
mystery
μυστήριον
mystērion
a hidden thing now disclosed
”mystery,” “secret”A previously hidden divine plan, now revealed — God’s unifying purpose in Christ (see also ch.3, ch.5).Critical. Proposed: סוֹד (sod). Risk: in Kabbalistic tradition, סוֹד is the fourth (innermost, mystical) layer of the PaRDeS interpretive scheme, inviting an esoteric-mystical reading rather than Paul’s sense of a real, historical, now-publicly-proclaimed plan. Alternative רָז (raz, Daniel’s Aramaic term for a God-revealed royal-court secret) carries less Kabbalistic freight and should be considered in translator notes as a lower-risk substitute where context allows.
inheritance
κληρονομία
klēronomia
allotted portion, heritage
”inheritance”Believers’ guaranteed future possession in Christ.High. Proposed: נַחֲלָה (nachalah) — the OT’s own term for Israel’s tribal land-allotment. Risk: nachalah is deeply bound to the Land; the NT’s heavenly/spiritual inheritance shared by Jew and Gentile must be taught as an expansion, not an erasure, of the land promises.
seal (of the Spirit)
ἐσφραγίσθητε
esphragisthēte
marked with a seal
”sealed”The Spirit as the mark of ownership and security.Medium. Proposed: נֶחְתַּמְנוּ (nechtamnu), noun חוֹתָם (chotam) — good OT resonance (Song of Songs 8:6). Low-medium risk.
guarantee/down payment
ἀρραβών
arrabōn
pledge, deposit
”guarantee,” “down payment,” “pledge”The Spirit as first installment guaranteeing the full inheritance.Medium. Proposed: עֵרָבוֹן (eravon) — used in Genesis 38:17-18 (Judah’s pledge to Tamar), a genuine OT precedent; also common Modern Hebrew for a commercial deposit, risking trivialization into a rental-deposit register.
power (resurrection power toward believers)
δύναμις
dynamis
might, capability
”power,” “might”God’s resurrection-power now at work in believers (1:19-20), an extension of the baseline power_of_god entry.Reuse TM: כּוֹחַ הָאֱלֹהִים. Same Medium risk (avoid גבורה/sefirot association).
head (of the church)
κεφαλή
kephalē
physical head; source/chief
”head”Christ’s supreme headship over all things and specifically over the church (1:22).High. Proposed: רֹאשׁ (rosh). Recurs in ch.5 in the household-code sense (husband as head of wife) — the SAME Hebrew word must serve both registers; teaching must distinguish Christ’s absolute cosmic headship from the relational headship of 5:23 to avoid collapsing the two.
body (of Christ)
σῶμα
sōma
physical body
”body”The church as Christ’s body, with him as head — foundational ecclesiology term for this curriculum.Medium. Proposed: גוּף (guf). Must be clearly taught as corporate/metaphorical, not merely anatomical; pairs with church (קהילה, already Critical in baseline for supersessionism risk) — reinforce the grafting-in, not-replacement framing.
fullness
πλήρωμα
plērōma
that which fills, completeness
”fullness”Christ fills the church, and the church is called his “fullness” (1:23) — a dense, recurring Ephesians term (also 3:19, 4:13).Medium. Proposed: מְלוֹא (melo) — echoes Psalm 24:1 “the earth and its fullness” (melo’ah). Requires one consistent rendering across all occurrences (see glossary).

Chapter 2:11-22 (remainder of Chapter 2, beyond the core passage)

TermsVariantsTheological MeaningHebrew Rendering & Risk
circumcision / uncircumcision
περιτομή / ἀκροβυστία
peritomē / akrobystia
the cut; the foreskin
”circumcision”/“uncircumcision”Marks the Jew-Gentile distinction Paul says is now transcended in Christ, without being erased as history.High. Proposed: מִילָה (milah) / עֹרְלָה (orlah) — standard, unavoidable, and doctrinally central terms (brit milah). Risk is entirely in framing: must not read as devaluing milah itself, only its role as a boundary-marker for covenant access to God through Christ.
far off / near
μακράν / ἐγγύς
makran / engys
distant / close
”far off”/“near”Spatial metaphor for Gentile exclusion, now removed, and Jewish nearness, both now shared in Christ.Medium. Proposed: רְחוֹקִים / קְרוֹבִים (rechokim/kerovim). Low collision, but must retain Isaiah 57:19’s own “peace to the far and the near” echo (a direct OT quotation Paul is likely drawing on) — a genuine asset.
hostility / enmity
ἔχθρα
echthra
enmity, hatred
”hostility,” “enmity”The Jew-Gentile hostility (and the God-humanity hostility) that Christ’s cross abolished.Medium. Proposed: אֵיבָה (eivah) — strong OT term (Genesis 3:15).
dividing wall
μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ
mesotoichon tou phragmou
the middle wall of the fence/partition
”dividing wall,” “barrier”Likely alludes to the Temple’s soreg, the balustrade barring Gentiles from the inner courts — a historically concrete image.Critical. Proposed: מְחִצָּה (mechitzah), NOT כּוֹתֶל (kotel — reserved exclusively for the Western Wall; using it here would be doctrinally explosive and deeply insensitive). Risk: מְחִצָּה is also the ordinary word for the synagogue’s gender-separation partition; teaching must make unmistakably clear that the specific barrier abolished is the Temple’s Gentile-exclusion barrier, not a general critique of mechitzah practice.
abolish/nullify
καταργήσας
katargēsas
render inoperative
”abolished,” “set aside,” “broke down”What Christ did to the hostility/wall, not to Torah itself (cf. baseline “law” entry — framing risk, not vocabulary).High. Proposed: בִּטֵּל (bittel) — a term with real halachic weight (bittul, nullification of a legal status); must be scoped precisely to the wall/enmity, not extended by implication to Torah as a whole.
reconcile
ἀποκαταλλάξῃ / καταλλαγή
apokatallaxē / katallagē
restore to favor
”reconcile,” “reconciliation”Double reconciliation: humanity to God, and Jew to Gentile, both through the cross.High. Proposed: לְפַיֵּס / פִּיּוּס (le-fayes / piyus) — resonates with the reconciliation theme of the Days of Awe (interpersonal piyus before Yom Kippur), a genuine positive asset if scoped correctly to both the vertical and horizontal dimensions Paul intends.
cross
σταυρός
stauros
execution stake
”cross”The specific historical instrument and event accomplishing reconciliation.High. Proposed: הַצְּלָב (ha-tzlav). Risk unique to this audience: the cross as a symbol carries painful historical freight (Crusades, forced conversions under the cross) alongside its doctrinal necessity; contextual sensitivity in surrounding teaching material is required, though the term itself has no viable substitute.
access
προσαγωγή
prosagōgē
a bringing near, admission
”access”Both Jew and Gentile now have access to the Father through Christ.Medium. Proposed: קִרְבָה (kirvah) — root ק-ר-ב shared with קָרְבָּן (korban, sacrificial offering, itself meaning “that which draws near”), a fruitful positive resonance.
household of God
οἰκεῖοι τοῦ θεοῦ
oikeioi tou theou
members of God’s household
”household of God,” “members of God’s family”Corporate belonging language, complementing “body” and anticipating “temple.”Low-Medium. Proposed: בְּנֵי בֵּיתוֹ שֶׁל הָאֱלֹהִים (benei beito shel ha-Elohim).
cornerstone/foundation
ἀκρογωνιαῖος
akrogōniaios
topmost/chief corner[stone]
“cornerstone,” “foundation stone”Christ as the foundation of the new temple-community, apostles/prophets as the foundation courses.Medium. Proposed: אֶבֶן הַפִּנָּה (even ha-pinah) — direct echo of Psalm 118:22 and Isaiah 28:16, both long-disputed messianic prooftexts in Jewish-Christian polemics (parallel risk to baseline’s “intercession”/Isaiah 53 note).
temple
ναός
naos
inner sanctuary, holy place
”temple,” “sanctuary”The corporate church as God’s dwelling-place, a metaphorical extension of Temple imagery.High. Proposed: הֵיכָל (heichal) — the inner-sanctuary term, distinguished from the whole Temple complex. Risk: applying sanctuary language to the (non-physical, corporate) church intersects with the still-active Jewish hope for a rebuilt physical Third Temple; must be taught as a genuine but non-competing metaphorical/spiritual extension, not a spiritualizing-away of that hope.
dwelling place
κατοικητήριον
katoikētērion
a place of habitation
”dwelling place,” “habitation”God’s Spirit dwelling in the church, echoing the wilderness Tabernacle.Medium. Proposed: מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan) — the Torah’s own Tabernacle term (Exodus 25-40). Strong positive resonance; risk is low, provided it is taught as continuity (God dwelling among his people) rather than displacement.

Chapter 3 (Ephesians 3:1-21)

TermsVariantsTheological MeaningHebrew Rendering & Risk
mystery
μυστήριον
mystērion
see ch.1 entry
”mystery”Specifically: Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members, fellow partakers of the promise in Christ (3:6).Reuse ch.1 rendering: סוֹד. Same Critical risk (Kabbalah PaRDeS collision); reinforced here by its explicit content (Jew-Gentile unity), doubling the stakes of a mystical-esoteric misreading.
stewardship
οἰκονομία
oikonomia
household management, administration
”stewardship,” “administration,” “commission”Paul’s entrusted commission to make the mystery known.Low-Medium. Proposed: נְאֶמָנוּת (ne’emanut, “trusteeship/faithfulness-in-charge”) — root shared with אֱמוּנָה (faith/faithfulness, already in TM), a positive resonance.
fellow heirs / fellow members / fellow partakers
συγκληρονόμα / σύσσωμα / συμμέτοχα
synklēronoma / syssōma / symmetocha
co-heirs / co-body-members / co-partakers
”fellow heirs,” “fellow members of the body,” “fellow partakers”The precise content of the mystery: full, equal Gentile inclusion, not second-tier status.High. Proposed: ש׻תָּפִים בַּנַּחֲלָה / בַּגּוּף / בַּהַבְטָחָה (partners in the inheritance/body/promise). Compounds the risk profile of “inheritance” (נחלה) already flagged in ch.1: this is the sharpest statement that Gentiles fully share Israel’s promised nachalah, requiring the most careful theological framing in the entire book for the Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine.
principalities and authorities
ἀρχαί καὶ ἐξουσίαι
archai kai exousiai
rulers and authorities
”rulers and authorities,” “principalities and powers”Cosmic spiritual powers who now observe God’s wisdom displayed through the church (3:10) — introduces the spiritual-warfare vocabulary developed fully in ch.6.High. Proposed: שָׂרִים וְשִׁלְטוֹנוֹת (sarim ve-shiltonot). See ch.6 for full treatment; cross-reference required.
boldness/access
παρρησία
parrēsia
freedom of speech, confidence
”boldness,” “confident access”Confident approach to God made possible through Christ, echoing 2:18’s “access.”Medium. Proposed: בִּטָּחוֹן (bitachon — noted in baseline as a rejected alternative for “faith,” but appropriate and available here for a different term/concept: confident boldness, not saving trust) or פְּתִיחוּת/עֹז (freedom/boldness). Recommend עֹז (oz, boldness) to avoid reusing the faith-adjacent bitachon in a different sense.
fullness of God
πλήρωμα τοῦ θεοῦ
plērōma tou theou
God’s own fullness
”fullness of God”The goal of Christian maturity — being filled with all God is/gives.Reuse ch.1 rendering: מְלוֹא. Same Medium risk; ensure consistent phrase construction: מְלוֹא הָאֱלֹהִים.

Chapter 4 (Ephesians 4:1-32)

TermsVariantsTheological MeaningHebrew Rendering & Risk
walk (ethical)
περιπατέω
peripateō
walk about
”walk,” “live,” “conduct oneself”The overarching ethical-exhortation motif of chs. 4-5 (see core-passage v.2/v.10 entries); “Walking in Newness of Life” doctrine’s central vocabulary.Reuse core-passage rendering: הִתְהַלֵּךְ. Consistent Medium risk; ensure the SAME Hebrew verb form is used across chs. 2, 4, and 5 for pedagogical continuity.
unity
ἑνότης
henotēs
oneness
”unity”Unity of the Spirit, expressed through the sevenfold “one body, one Spirit… one God and Father” (4:4-6).Medium. Proposed: אַחְדוּת (achdut) — reuses the root already established in the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine name (אחדות היהודים והגויים). Must be taught as Spirit-given unity to be maintained, not achieved uniformity.
baptism
βάπτισμα
baptisma
immersion
”baptism""One baptism” — union with Christ, part of the sevenfold unity list.High. Proposed: טְבִילָה (tevilah) — the existing Jewish ritual-immersion term (mikveh, conversion immersion, niddah purification). Risk: strong existing associations with ritual purity/conversion immersion may obscure the NT sense of union with Christ’s death and resurrection (already covered under Romans 6, though not in the baseline TM as a standalone entry); must be taught as distinct in meaning though not entirely unrelated in form.
gifts (offices): apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers
δόματα… ἀποστόλους, προφήτας, εὐαγγελιστάς, ποιμένας καὶ διδασκάλους
domata… apostolous, prophētas, euangelistas, poimenas kai didaskalous
gifts given… apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers
”gifts,” “apostles/prophets/evangelists/pastors/teachers”Christ’s ascension gifts to equip the church — the “Gifts for Building Up the Church” doctrine’s core term-cluster.Apostle/prophet: reuse TM (שליח/נביא). New: evangelist — Medium, proposed מְבַשֵּׂר (mevaser), sharing the root with “gospel” (besorah, already in TM) — a strong, positive etymological asset. Pastor/shepherd — Medium, proposed רוֹעֶה (ro’eh) — rich OT resonance (Psalm 23, Ezekiel 34); risk is low collision but must be elevated beyond literal shepherding. Teacher — Medium, proposed מוֹרֶה (moreh) — the ordinary word for any teacher (including a school teacher); context must mark this as a Spirit-given church office.
building up
οἰκοδομή
oikodomē
building, edifice
”building up,” “edification”The purpose of all the gifts above — growth of the whole body toward maturity, aligns with baseline’s mutual_edification doctrine (Low risk there).Low. Proposed: בְּנִיָּן (binyan) — consistent with baseline’s existing “build up” vocabulary (לבנות).
put off / put on
ἀποθέσθαι / ἐνδύσασθαι
apothesthai / endysasthai
to take off (clothing) / to put on (clothing)
“put off… put on”Ethical imagery of changing clothes — decisively renouncing the old self, decisively donning the new.Medium. Proposed: לְהַשְׁלִיךְ / לְהִתְלַבֵּשׁ (le-hashlich / le-hitlabesh). Sets up ch.6’s armor-of-God “clothing” imagery — cross-reference required for consistency.
old self / new self
παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον / νέον (καινὸν) ἄνθρωπον
palaion anthrōpon / kainon anthrōpon
old man / new man
”old self,” “old man,” “new self,” “new man”The INDIVIDUAL counterpart to the CORPORATE “one new man” of 2:15 — must be carefully distinguished from that earlier, different-scope use.High. Proposed: הָאָדָם הַיָּשָׁן / הָאָדָם הֶחָדָש (ha-adam ha-yashan / ha-adam ha-chadash). Risk: identical Hebrew phrase-pattern to 2:15’s “one new man” (אָדָם חָדָש אֶחָד) risks conflating the individual-renewal doctrine here with the corporate Jew-Gentile-unity doctrine there; teaching notes must flag the scope difference explicitly.
renewed (in mind/spirit)
ἀνανεοῦσθαι
ananeousthai
to be made new again
”renewed”Ongoing Spirit-wrought inner transformation, distinct from once-for-all regeneration.Low-Medium. Proposed: לְהִתְחַדֵּשׁ (le-hitchadesh) — resonates with Rosh Chodesh (monthly renewal) and the Days-of-Awe liturgical line “חַדֵּשׁ יָמֵינוּ כְּקֶדֶם” (“renew our days as of old”). Strong positive resonance.
grieve (the Spirit)
λυπεῖτε
lypeite
to cause sorrow
”grieve,” “sadden”Assumes the Spirit is a Person capable of relational sorrow — reinforces the personhood emphasis already Critical in the baseline’s holy_spirit entry.Medium. Proposed: לְהַעֲצִיב (le-ha’atziv). Cross-reference the baseline’s Holy Spirit personhood note.

Chapter 5 (Ephesians 5:1-33)

TermsVariantsTheological MeaningHebrew Rendering & Risk
imitators (of God)
μιμηταί
mimētai
copiers, followers of an example
”imitators”A bold call to imitate God’s own character, grounded in Christ’s self-giving love.Medium. Proposed: מְחַקִּים (mechakim). Positive Jewish parallel exists (imitatio Dei, Sotah 14a: “just as God clothes the naked, so should you”); asset more than risk.
offering and sacrifice
προσφορὰν καὶ θυσίαν
prosphoran kai thysian
offering and sacrifice
”offering and sacrifice”Christ’s self-giving described in sacrificial-cultic terms.High. Proposed: קָרְבָּן וּמִנְחָה (korban u-minchah) — direct Temple sacrificial vocabulary. Risk: applying Temple categories to Christ’s death requires the same “fulfillment not abolition” framing already established for Torah in the baseline; must be taught with reference to the Temple system’s typological fulfillment, not its dismissal.
fragrant offering
ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας
osmēn euōdias
aroma of sweet smell
”fragrant offering,” “pleasing aroma”Echoes Genesis 8:21’s post-flood “pleasing aroma” (רֵיח נִיחוֹחַ) of Noah’s offering.Low-Medium. Proposed: רֵיח נִיחוֹחַ (re’ach nichoach) — direct OT quotation, strong positive resonance.
children of light
τέκνα φωτός
tekna phōtos
children of light
”children of light”Believers’ new identity, contrasted with “darkness.”Low-Medium. Proposed: בְּנֵי אוֹר (benei or) — notably parallels the Dead Sea Scrolls’ “Sons of Light” sectarian self-designation (1QS, the War Scroll), an interesting and largely positive historical resonance worth noting in teaching materials, not a doctrinal collision.
filled with the Spirit
πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι
plērousthe en Pneumati
be being filled in/by the Spirit
”be filled with the Spirit”Ongoing, repeated Spirit-filling as the alternative to drunkenness — shares the πλήρωμα root already flagged in chs.1 and 3.Medium. Proposed: הִתְמַלְּאוּ בָּרוּחַ (hitmal’u ba-Ruach). Reuse the מלוא root for consistency with the fullness entries above.
submit
ὑποτάσσω
hypotassō
arrange under, subordinate
”submit,” “be subject to”5:21’s mutual submission “to one another” frames 5:22-33’s wife-husband instruction; the household-codes doctrine’s most sensitive single term.High. Proposed: לְהִכָּנַע (le-hikana). Risk: כניעה can carry a defeat/surrender-in-battle register in Hebrew (military/national capitulation), which risks reading as domination-submission rather than voluntary, Christ-patterned self-giving order; teaching must foreground 5:21’s mutuality and 5:25’s parallel call to husbands to sacrificial love before any wife-specific instruction is presented.
head (of the wife)
κεφαλή
kephalē
see ch.1 entry
”head”Christ-patterned headship in marriage, explicitly modeled on self-sacrificial love (5:25), not authority for its own sake.Reuse ch.1 rendering: רֹאשׁ. Same High risk, now in the household-code register — must be explicitly distinguished from Christ’s absolute cosmic headship over the church (ch.1) even while using it as the pattern.
one flesh
μία σάρξ
mia sarx
one flesh
”one flesh”Direct quotation of Genesis 2:24, applied typologically to Christ and the church.Low. Direct OT quotation: בָּשָׂר אֶחָד (basar echad) — no independent risk; strong positive resonance.
mystery (of marriage/Christ and the church)
μυστήριον
mystērion
see ch.1/ch.3 entries
”mystery”The marriage-typology culminates the Ephesians mystery-motif: Christ and the church, imaged in human marriage.Reuse rendering: סוֹד. Same Critical risk profile; here compounded by the marriage typology’s own sensitivity (see “submit” above).

Chapter 6 (Ephesians 6:1-24)

TermsVariantsTheological MeaningHebrew Rendering & Risk
obey
ὑπακούετε
hypakouete
to hear under, obey
”obey”Children’s obedience to parents “in the Lord.”Low. Proposed: לְהִשָּׁמַע (le-hishama) — OT idiom “to hearken to the voice of.”
honor father and mother
τίμα τὸν πατέρα…
tima ton patera
honor your father…
“honor your father and mother”Direct citation of the Fifth Commandment (Exodus 20:12/Deut 5:16) — Paul explicitly grounds household ethics in Torah, not against it.Low. Direct OT quotation: כַּבֵּד אֶת אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ. Genuine asset — flag as a positive teaching point that household codes are Torah-continuous.
bondservants / masters
δοῦλοι / κύριοι
douloi / kyrioi
slaves / lords-masters
”slaves,” “bondservants” / “masters”Household-code instruction assuming the ancient institution of slavery, redirected by shared accountability to a heavenly Master.High. Proposed: עֲבָדִים (avadim) / אֲדוֹנִים (adonim). Risk: (1) עבדים carries both OT legal-slavery resonance (Exodus 21, Jubilee release) and painful modern historical echoes; (2) אֲדוֹנִים (plural of אָדוֹן) is the SAME root used for the divine title Adon/Adonai applied to Christ’s Lordship (Critical in the baseline) — Paul deliberately puns on this in 6:9 (“you also have a Master [same word] in heaven”); this wordplay should be preserved and explicitly taught, not smoothed away.
respect of persons / partiality
προσωπολημψία
prosōpolēmpsia
face-taking, favoritism
”partiality,” “respect of persons”God shows no partiality between master and slave — grounds equal accountability.Low. Proposed: מַשּׂוֹא פָנִים (masso panim) — direct Torah legal term (Deut 1:17, Lev 19:15). Strong positive resonance.
armor of God
πανοπλία τοῦ Θεοῦ
panoplia tou Theou
full armor/equipment of God
”armor of God,” “full armor”The controlling metaphor for the “Spiritual Warfare” doctrine, drawing on Isaiah’s Divine Warrior imagery (Isaiah 11:5; 59:17).High. Proposed: כְּלֵי נֶשֶׂק הָאֱלֹהִים (kelei nesheq ha-Elohim) or נִשְׁקוֹ הַשָּׁלֵם שֶׁל הָאֱלֹהִים. Note the OT source (Isaiah’s armor of righteousness/salvation) as a genuine asset reducing collision risk; still High because the full doctrine (real cosmic conflict, not merely metaphorical self-improvement) must be clearly taught.
individual armor pieces: belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit/word of God
zōnēn tēs alētheias, thōraka tēs dikaiosynēs, hetoimasian tou euangeliou, thyreon tēs pisteōs, perikephalaian tou sōtēriou, machairan tou Pneumatos, rhēma Theou
belt/breastplate/shoes/shield/helmet/sword
see individual glossEach piece pairs an item of Roman armor with an already-established doctrine (truth, righteousness/צדק, gospel/הבשורה, faith/אמונה, salvation/ישועה, the Spirit/Word).Medium overall; each individual noun reuses baseline TM terms exactly (צדק, אמונה, ישועה, הבשורה, שלום) attached to new “equipment” nouns: חֲגוֹרָה (belt), שִׁרְיוֹן (breastplate), נַעֲלַיִם (shoes/sandals), מָגֵן (shield), כּוֹבַע (helmet), חֶרֶב (sword). Because the theological nouns are already Critical/High risk terms in the baseline, translators must not substitute alternative renderings for any of them even inside this military-metaphor context.
rulers, authorities, cosmic powers, spiritual forces of evil
ἀρχάς, ἐξουσίας, κοσμοκράτορας, πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας
archas, exousias, kosmokratoras, pneumatika tēs ponērias
rulers, authorities, world-rulers [of this darkness], spiritual [things] of wickedness
”principalities and powers,” “rulers of this world’s darkness,” “spiritual forces of evil”Real, personal, organized spiritual opposition — the doctrinal core of “Spiritual Warfare.”Critical. Risk: Jewish tradition has real angelology/demonology categories (Talmudic sarim, mazikin, shedim), which is a partial asset, but modern secular Israeli readers may dismiss this as superstition, while readers familiar with Kabbalistic or folk-practice frameworks (amulets, ayin ha-ra/“evil eye”) may import a magical, semi-dualistic frame that compromises God’s sovereignty. Must be taught as real but entirely subordinate to God’s supreme authority (already established via ch.1’s cosmic headship of Christ).
wrestle/struggle
πάλη
palē
wrestling-match
”struggle,” “wrestle""We wrestle not against flesh and blood” — frames the conflict as spiritual, not interpersonal.Low-Medium. Proposed: הֵאָבְקוּת (he’avkut) — echoes Jacob’s wrestling with the angel (Genesis 32:25, וַיֵּאָבֵק), a strong positive OT resonance.
devil
διάβολος
diabolos
slanderer, accuser
”devil”The personal source of the wiles/schemes to be resisted.Medium-High. Proposed: הַשָּׂטָן (ha-satan) — direct OT term (Job, Zechariah 3). Risk: the OT Satan functions as a subordinate prosecuting/accusing figure operating only within God’s permission (Job 1-2), whereas some readings of NT spiritual-warfare material can drift toward an independent cosmic-rival framing; must be taught consistently with the OT’s subordination motif, reinforced by Christ’s supreme headship (ch.1).
wiles/schemes
μεθοδεία
methodeia
scheming methods
”wiles,” “schemes,” “strategies”The devil’s crafty strategies to be resisted through the armor.Medium. Proposed: תַּחְבּוּלוֹת (tachbulot) — note the semantic flip: Proverbs uses תַחְבּוּלוֹת positively for wise strategy (Prov 1:5, 20:18); here applied negatively to the devil’s schemes, an instructive irony worth flagging in teaching notes.
ambassador (in chains)
πρεσβεύω
presbeuō
to act as an elder/ambassador
”ambassador”Paul’s self-description while imprisoned, proclaiming the mystery boldly.Low-Medium. Reuse the apostle-term family: שָׁלִיח (shaliach, already in TM) fits naturally as “delegated representative” — context (in chains) supplies the specific ambassadorial nuance without requiring a separate lexical entry.
incorruptible (love)
ἀφθαρσία
aphtharsia
undecaying, imperishable
”incorruptible,” “undying”The closing benediction’s description of proper love for Christ.Low. Proposed: אַהֲבָה שֶׁאֵינָהּ כָּלָה (ahavah she-einah kalah, “a love that does not fade/perish”).
